The Slaver Chronicles — Book 1 — Sam
Chapter 21 — Hate
We got up early, four thirty. Julie’s flight was leaving at seven and we needed to get her to the airport early enough to get through security.
Her bags were mostly packed, actually she was leaving a lot of her things here since she was going to be home where she had a lot of other things to wear.
“Ready love?”
“Yes.” She picked up her travel bag and purse and we headed for the car. Kristen was coming with us to keep me company on the way back from the airport.
We walked out to the car and started to get in when Julie said “Oh shoot. I left my cell phone on the table by your bed.”
“I’ll get it.” I volunteered.
“Then give me the keys and I’ll start the car.” We were taking Kristen’s car.
“Ok. Here you go.” I tossed her the keys.
Back in the apartment I decided I needed to take a leak first. Then I grabbed Julie’s cell phone and headed for the door.
As I approached the front door there was a blinding flash of white/yellow light that penetrated the room around the curtains and then my world went black.
There were canyons. Endless canyons.
The canyons were not entirely quiet. Sound echoed from the canyon walls.
I came to realize that the sounds were voices but I couldn’t understand them. They just kept echoing among the canyons.
The canyons gave way to a huge warehouse. The voices were still there and still indistinct. I moved through the warehouse following the voices but saw no one.
The warehouse became a cavern. Deep underground with stalagmites and stalactites. I kept following the voices but could find no person. The voices were stronger here but I still couldn’t make out what they said.
I emerged into a tunnel under the mountain, with a freeway running down the middle, but no cars, no people, it was empty except for the voices.
Then I was in a concert hall, way up in the balcony. The voices were very loud here but the words were still unintelligible. I noticed someone on the stage. I was on the stairs walking slowly down to the front. On the stage I saw Steve. Then it was Adiva. Adiva changed to Chahna and Casey. They turned into Stefani then another woman, a faceless woman in a white dress. I listened carefully trying to make out what the voices were saying and I thought I could finally understand the words.
...blood pressure normal, respiration nominal, temperature good, heart rate perfect. Well Mr. Williams, why aren’t you waking up?
I opened my eye. The ceiling was light yellow. Where is this? I tried to speak but there was something in my throat.
“Hey! There you are. Well how about that! Welcome back to the world of the living Mr. Williams. Just relax a minute and I’ll get a doctor.”
Then she was gone. I didn’t want her to go. I needed to ask her something. It was something important. But I couldn’t remember what it was.
Then there was a man’s voice. “Well Mr. Williams I’m glad to have you back with us.”
“Aaaaaagh.” I said.
“Don’t try to talk yet. Just let me check your vitals and then we’ll get some of these tubes out of your face. Nurse, can you assist please.”
They checked me from head to foot. Then they began removing things that were connected to my body. All the while the doctor gave me a running commentary on each attached item and its purpose.
Finally they were finished.
“Ok. Can you tell me your name?”
I had to think about that. It was something.
“Sssaaaa.”
My mouth wasn’t working right.
“Good. Don’t worry about the mouth Sam, your ability to talk will return in a few hours. It’s partly the drugs and partly lack of use.”
“Waaaa haaaak?”
“I’m afraid your questions will have to wait until you can express yourself a little better. I’ll just tell you that you were in an accident and you’ve been in a coma for seventeen days.”
Seventeen days? What the hell happened? I couldn’t remember.
“Now why don’t you try to sleep. We’ll tell your friends you should be able to talk to them tomorrow morning.”
I knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep. Then I woke up and there was sunshine filtering through the window blinds.
I moved my left hand to my right eye. There was a patch over it.
I turned my head to look at my surroundings. I knew I was in a hospital room by now. It was a big room. There was a sofa under the window and someone was sleeping on it. Whoever it was chose that moment to turn over and look at me. I know her.
She sat up. “Master!” she gasped.
“Ssteffani.” I slurred.
“Oh thank god. We were all so worried about you.”
“Wherresh eryon?”
“They’re coming Master.”
“Whaa haapenn?”
She started crying and shook her head. Just then someone else came into the room. The man was... Steve. Behind him came... I knew her... she was a police woman... it finally came, Casey. Then the other two... they had different names... they weren’t from here, at least their families weren’t. A...diva and Chahna.
The girls were all crying and even Steve was barely holding back the tears.
“God Sam, we thought we’d lost you!”
“Whaad Haapennd!?” I was getting frustrated asking the same question over and over and getting no answer.
He looked around at the girls while the tears started flowing more freely and there were sobs. He took a deep breath.
“There was a bomb Sam. Several bombs actually. The police said that every car in the apartment complex including those of your neighbors in apartments four and five were wired with several pounds of plastic explosive each. When the first one went off it ignited the rest.”
“Bommb?”
“Yes Sam. The explosions were so powerful and the fires burned so hot that they didn’t find anything of the girls but a few pieces of clothing. I’m afraid Kristen and Julie are dead. I’m very sorry for your loss Sam.”
Kristen? Blond. I could see her smiling face. I could see her in her blue minidress holding a shopping bag full of fat suit. Julie. Black. Straight hair. So lovely. My love. I saw her running to me from across the airport. Julie? Dead?
“JUUUUUULLLIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!” I screamed “NOOOOOOOOoooooo! No no no no no.”
I heard no more. Saw no more. I was alone with my grief, in my own world. Inconsolable.
I don’t know how much time passed. I must have fallen asleep at some point. When I woke up I was finished grieving. Something inside me went cold. A switch was thrown. Something that had been off was now on, and it was at maximum power, or something that had existed disintegrated, vaporized.
I looked around the room again. Chahna was there in a chair. She had fallen asleep. Chahna, wake up, I need you.
Her eyes opened. “Master? Did you call?”
“Yes sweetheart. Get Steve for me, and call Larry. I want them both here.”
“Yes Master.”
She left the room.
Soon Steve came in.
“Have a seat Steve and tell me the rest of the story.”
“Well. The police apparently have no clue who did it. Someone with military experience is all they can say. They do say that because of the amount of explosive used it may be a hate crime. The experts said it was overkill and sloppy. Sorry. But yeah, it was way more than necessary. Someone wanted to make sure someone died.”
“The apartments are trashed. Your office is the only part of the building that wasn’t damaged.”
“What evidence do the police have?”
“None, if we can believe them, except for what I told you before. They’re looking for someone with a military history.”
Larry poked his head into the room.
“Come in Larry. I want to talk to both of you together.”
“Sure. Sam I’m real sorry for your loss. I mean that.”
“Thanks Larry, now sit down.” I didn’t have any more time for grief.
“Steve, this is Larry. He works with the intelligence branch of the government. Larry meet Steve Bartholomue, head attorney, Vice President of operations and all around right hand man of the CEO of Adamson Corp.”
They shook hands.
“Now. As of this moment I want you both to bend all of your resources to answer one question. Who killed Kristen and Julie? Steve, we have military people in our security firm, ask them about this, and find out if any of them have investigative skills. Get someone to go door to door in our neighborhood and ask the neighbors if they had any kind of surveillance equipment operating in the days leading up to the bombing. I want everything you can find within six blocks of the apartments.”
“That’s a big job Sam, and I’m sure the police...”
“The police are not motivated to solve this crime. I don’t care what they have already done. I want you to do what I ask.
“Larry. When we get any kind of lead I want you to use your resources inside the intelligence community to help us find answers, to help us find the people responsible for this. Pull every string you have to pull, take risks if you have to. And I want you to find a way for me to meet with Alberto.”
“Sam, I don’t know if that’s a good idea...” began Larry.
At the same moment Steve said “I’m not sure it’s a good idea to use the company...”
“LISTEN TO ME!”
They both stopped cold.
“Kristen is dead!” I drilled into Steve’s soul with a diamond hard stare.
I turned to Larry. “They killed Julie. She was my soul mate Larry, the love of my life! You know what that means to people like us.” Steve didn’t know what we were talking about but he was pretty sharp and knew there was a secret that Larry and I shared that he was not yet privy to. “You know how much it meant to my grandfather.”
“YOU WILL DO AS I SAY! BOTH OF YOU!” I felt flush and my face must have been red.
I was surprised when I didn’t get any more arguments.
“Ok Sam, whatever you want.” Steve lowered his head.
“I’ll do whatever you ask Sam.” Larry too adopted a posture of acquiescence.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
“We’re going to find this bastard, and we’re going to make him pay. I swear by everything I hold dear, I am going to make him wish he’d never gone to war with Sam Williams!”
