Ink Stained Reunion
Chapter 17: Reunited
The trip back to Sylvia and Aurora’s childhood home was quick. Aurora and Sylvia rode together on Aureus, and Zandra dissolved into the floor. Sylvia could have done the same, but instead she wrapped her arms tightly around Aurora and purred at the familiar warmth.
It was a quiet ride. Wind whipped past them and Aureus roared under them, but otherwise it was silent. Their lips held a smile, and shared a passing mewl with each sharp turn.
Aurora’s metal flesh reflected the starlight, and Sylvia’s warmth.
Once the sisters caught up with Zandra they were rewarded with the sight of Aniela, Pamela, Kelly, the camera crew, and Yana all tightly bound in straps of blue leather. Zandra walked out from their old room in the motion of puling on her cloak. “Sorry for worrying you, Aurora. Ancient Warden secret. Let’s just say I wasn’t really there until everyone left. And I hope the rod was helpful.”
“Well, I still fell off a building.” Aurora shed her metal guise with a grin. “Got better. Wasn’t too much of an inconvenience. Not even a headache. I think not being sure if I was going to survive the hit made me pass out, though.”
“It was an impressive sight, really. Just before you hit it wrapped you up.” Sylvia grinned as Aurora blushed. “Must be nice. Sorry about the whole trying to take you over thing, Zandra. I wasn’t exactly completely myself. Apparently I sort of have three mommies. And I thought two was weird enough.”
Zandra’s smile softened as she waved her hand dismissively. “All part of the job, Sylvia. But there are still two missing people. Know where they are?”
Sylvia and Aurora looked to each other’s eyes. The gaze lingered as their smiles grew together. Sylvia remembered herself first and quickly shook her head. Sarah and Valerie were still missing. Eliminating Yana as a woman who would want revenge on Sarah didn’t do much to shorten the list.
“Not a clue. Yana didn’t do it. We don’t even know if the same people kidnapped both of them. The police had a lead I was going to follow up on before I ran into Yana . . . They might know something more.” Sylvia’s smile dissolved as she slouched back into the couch. At the last moment her fingers twined with Aurora’s and tugged her down onto the couch. “I have a sinking suspicion that’s a dead end.”
Aurora mewled and fluttered her eyes. She tried to pull her hand from Sylvia’s grasp, but she held tight and pulled Aurora closer. Their eyes met, and Sylvia squeezed her sister’s hand tighter. A gentle flow of her power pulsed from the palm of her hand, and Aurora could feel her warmth through Sylvia’s bond as clearly as she could feel the apprehension.
“It probably is. Beside you two and Yana there aren’t any witch magics floating around Midas—at least not our kind of witch. I wouldn’t put it past this place to have something very similar, though. It has a nice atmosphere.” Zandra smiled down at the sisters with a sad sigh. “This means I have to get going. I only have jurisdiction over our people. I could intervene against Yana because she’s a Nesatealia. Your mother is hardly helpless. If the threat does not involve a witch, I can’t interfere. But . . .”
“But?” Sylvia’s and Aurora’s voices spoke in perfect sync. A powerful blush spread along their faces in just as perfect unison, Aurora’s making her cheeks a faint hue of silver.
Zandra laughed as she reached into her cloak. “That doesn’t mean you two shouldn’t try looking . . . or that I’m about to stop. The Light Bearer has to be found. I’ll need to make a quick trip home to bring Yana in to the proper authorities, but then I’ll be back on the hunt. There are some places I’d love to look, and if I find anything . . .” The Warden held out her hand. Resting in the valley of her palm were two small silver rings holding sapphires. “These will enable us to communicate across the worlds. Just pour a little power in, think about me, and if I can, I’ll respond. Just don’t abuse them, or I’ll sever the link.”
Both sisters took a ring.
“Thanks, really, for everything.” Sylvia smiled and slid her fingers through Aurora’s hair as she pulled her tighter. “I hope we do get to see you again. Is there any chance you might be able to take Aniela, too? Mom even blasted her with her light and missed some ink, it might be a good idea to be completely sure she was taken care of . . .”
The Warden gazed down at Aniela. Her pale body was at rest, but even unconscious her face lacked any peace. For an inner struggle, it was as external as it could be.
Zandra nodded, and gently moved the slumbering woman closer to Yana. The closer she was the more Aniela’s face smoothed. When their bodies almost touched she mewled and exhaled a loud sigh. None of them needed to say that even becoming completely free from Yana wouldn’t fix the damage.
“I’ll make sure she’s taken care of. It’s an unorthodox thing to do, but letting her free with a hole in her mind would hardly be doing her a favor. I’ve removed the ink from the others . . . What you do with them is up to you. I trust you’ll find something appropriate.” Zandra sighed, forcing herself to smile. “I shouldn’t draw this out. We’ll meet again. Take care of yourselves . . .”
Without another word Zandra drew a circle in the air with her rod, and in a flash of blue light she disappeared along with the scribe and her shadow.
Aurora curled closer to Sylvia as she started to slide on the ring. Sylvia grasped her hand before she could, and their eyes met again. Light shone from within Aurora’s, and sparking mist swirled within Sylvia’s. The gaze was intense, prompting tears in Aurora’s eyes that glistened with silver light.
They fell slowly along her cheeks, falling faster as Sylvia pulled her smaller sister into her lap. Aurora shook. Her arms wrapped tightly around Sylvia as she whimpered and tried not to shudder.
“I’m so so sor—”
“—shhh. No.” Sylvia pressed her finger to her sister’s lips, swirling her heat through them. “I hurt you too. I never should have tried to leave you behind. I should have done everything I could to take you with me. But I’m glad you didn’t come, with what happened to me . . . She was going to have me do it to you, and I would have done it.”
“And if Rebeca had told me to do the same to you . . .? We . . . in that mindscape, we shared something, an understanding, a connection . . . Something most people aren’t lucky enough to feel. I felt how much you love me, and you felt how much I love you, I . . . I don’t want to wreck your career, but . . . behind closed doors . . .” She kissed Sylvia, pressing herself against her sister with an almost dangerous passion. “I need you . . .”
Sylvia kissed her back, stroking her thumb slowly across Aurora’s cheek. “I need you too . . . Nikki is going to be so furious, but I need you. I love you. My music career can’t come before our moms. After we do that, I don’t know what we’ll do, but until then . . . I want to be us.”
Tears slid along Sylvia’s cheeks as their lips melted together, and Sylvia slid the ring onto Aurora’s finger.
