The Consequences and Rewards of Playing Hookey

Chapter 16

Coming to Terms

“Derek, I’m still not completely clear what went on with Sandy,” said Veronica Carson, before taking a sip of her breakfast coffee.

“Neither am I, Mom,” said Derek, telling some truth. “All I know is that Mr. Fitzwater acted mighty strange when I told him that Sandy wanted to switch guidance counselors and then insisted against the change, even if the Turners wanted it. That made me suspicious and finally really angry.”

“Still, son that doesn’t excuse what you said to him.”

“I know, Mom, but you should have seen how smug and manipulative he was acting. I was curious to see how he would respond and his response was too over the top to be Innocent. Mom, I think he might have done something to Sandy. More importantly, if he did, I’m not going to let him touch her again!”

“OK, Derek. Don’t worry. I’ve suggested that Maggie and Paul have a sit down with Principal Hanson. She’s has the reputation of being a fair person and I’m sure that even for the sake of appearances, Sandy should be able to switch to Nancy Seales. In the meantime, I’ve also advised them to have Sandy avoid Roscoe Fitzwater at all costs.”

Derek frowned “But what if he insists on seeing her?”

“Her parents have given her permission to ignore his requests. Instead of seeing him, she would report to the office for discipline. Maggie and Paul would clear up any issues with Principal Hanson when they meet.”

“So, what about my punishment?”

“Under the circumstances it is too severe. I hate throwing my weight around, but it really irks me that I am busting my hump trying to get the schools more money and how do they thank me? They unfairly punish my son for sticking up for his girlfriend when it is likely that she is being abused. Pete Seales is on my side. As the Chairman of the Board of Ed, he will lobby the Superintendent if Principal Hanson doesn’t deal with this appropriately. I’d hate to see her stuck in the middle, but if she were doing her job effectively, none of this would have happened.”

“Thanks Mom.”

“Derek, you’re still not blameless in this. You need to act more responsibly in the future, or we’ll have to find a way to get you to see that. Do you understand?”

“Yes Mom.”

“Now go to school. I don’t want you to get into trouble for making you and the others late.”

Derek hugged his mother goodbye, grabbed his backpack and headed for the door. He knew he had dodged a bullet. If his Mom had known all the facts about he and the others cutting school, there would have been a strong possibility that he would have really been in trouble. Still, he reasoned that it was Fitzwater who was really between a rock and hard place. He had a lot more to lose than Derek and Sandy. They would have to wait and see how the man would react to Sandy switching guidance counselors.

At the school, Rana and Rogesh were talking in the hallway.

“Rana, what is this double date thing all about,” asked Rogesh.

“Hey, I don’t like this anymore than you do. Sandra Turner insisted that you and I go out with her and Derek over the weekend. She also insisted on me being ‘really good to you’.”

“What does that mean?”

“Second base,” she said glumly.

“What?”

“It means I have to make out with you and you get to touch these,” she said pointing her lovely B cup breasts.

“Why is she doing this,” asked Rogesh nervously.

“I suspect that Rachel or Devin ratted us out.”

“Crap!”

“I tried to get my parents to pull the plug on the date, but since they’ve already decided that you should be their son, they insisted that I go.”

“I could see if I could get my parents to stop it,” suggested Rogesh.

“No, I saw how happy they were when they saw us together. Besides, Sandra will be even more suspicious if we try to back out now.”

“OK. Rana?”

“Yes.” She said quietly.

“I’m sorry you are stuck with this. You really are a nice girl.”

“Thanks. You’re a nice guy yourself Rogesh. I know you don’t want this any more than I do. But we’re stuck, so I guess we’ll just have to trust each other. What pisses me off was that I had a date with Paul Prescott and I was going to ask you to cover for me.”

“Do you really like him?”

“He’s hot and he’s into me. Nothing personal, but I was hoping that it would be him sliding into second instead of you.”

“As I said, I’m sorry…”

Rana smiled wistfully. “It’s OK Rogesh. It’s not your fault.”

At the end of second period English, Sandy saw Connie get up from her seat. “Martin, hold up for a second.”

“Turner, haven’t you done enough to screw with me? You knew I liked Derek and you took him away. Then you told me Brett was available…”

“Yeah, I confess that I didn’t see that one coming either,” chuckled Sandy. “As far as Derek, ‘she who hesitates’…”

“But he’s not even your type.”

“Listen Connie. You don’t know about our history. He’s ‘The One’.”

Connie wore an expression that fell between shock and amusement. “What? You mean…”

“Yeah… I think I’ve always wanted him.”

Connie sneered. “While your confession is quite touching, it doesn’t help me.”

“Look Connie, I’m not going to make any apologies about Derek but I’m sorry about Brett. I want to make it up to you.”

“Don’t do me any favors.”

“Hear me out.”

Connie adopted an impatient expression. “OK, what?”

“Do you know Dean Flynn?”

“Yeah. Last year he went out with my friend Cindy Langdon.”

“Didn’t she move?”

“Yeah, to Ohio.”

“Well he’s available. Derek told me. He also thought that Dean might like you.”

“Well he is a cute guy and he’s a jock…”

“But he’s pretty smart too, right?”

“Yeah… he is. I never really thought of Dean romantically…”

“But…”

“Are you sure he’s available? Did he mention me?”

“Yes and no, but Connie?”

“What?”

“You’re a beautiful girl. He’d be crazy not to go for you.”

Connie laughed. “What’s up Turner? Going lesbo?”

“I said something nice. Don’t be such a bitch,” laughed Sandy, but giving Connie a look that said she better stop.

“OK, but Turner?”

“Yeah?”

“I hope you’re right about this one.”

“Just meet me after baseball practice. Derek and I will arrange everything.”

At the Nilsen home, Ilsa got the call from her husband that she had been dreading.

“So, it’s final?”

“John said that he would talk to his wife, but it did not seem likely that any of the rescue operations would be inclined to take Sadie’s case.

Ilsa Nilsen began to cry. She thought how hard her children and their friends were working to save Sadie. She realized how hard it would hit Suzanne in particular. She knew that the chances were that Sadie might not even survive the operation and it would be cruel to give them hope. Shadow had turned out to be a great dog, but getting him to that point had pushed Ilsa to the brink of a nervous breakdown, as her fairly high strung nature was pushed beyond her ability to cope.

Sven heard his wife’s tears. “Honey, we’ve tried everything we possibly could. I know this is sad, but it is just a part of life. It is important for Brett and Tom to learn that,” he said comfortingly.

“I know,” she choked, “I just wish that things could be different.”

Back at school in the Cafeteria, Sandy ran to Derek’s arms and hugged him. She looked scared.

“What’s wrong?” asked Derek.

“Fitzwater had me paged to go to the office. I told Mr. Dryden that my parents told me not to see him and that I should not miss any class time. Instead, after class I was to report to the office. I told Vice Principal Simmons that I refused to see Fitzwater with my parents blessing and I got a detention!”

“I figured that would happen. He’ll probably try again.”

“Yeah… do you think I should….”

“You will not be alone with that man under any circumstances!”

“Derek?”

‘What?”

“Is that an order?”

“Yes.”

“Then I guess I don’t have any choice,” she laughed, as a tear ran down her cheek. Despite this Sandy felt a sense of relief.

“No. You don’t,” he laughed too, as he tightened the hug.

“Devin, why did you have to open your big mouth?” complained Rogesh at lunch.

“We didn’t tell Sandra, Rogesh. She’s not dumb, you know,” replied Devin.

“Honestly, Rogesh, she figured it out on her own. All we did was confirm it,” stated Rachel.

Rogesh grimaced. “Couldn’t you have lied?”

“To Sandra Turner? Are you crazy!” spat Devin.

“Rogesh, there is no way we could have lied to her,” said Rachel.

“But can’t you see? This is making Rana miserable.”

Rachel looked at Rogesh and smiled. “You really care for her, don’t you?”

“I do. She’s a sweet girl.”

Devin laughed. “She’s pretty hot too.”

“Yeah, Rogesh. She’s a little hottie,” agreed Rachel, saying it to Rogesh, but giving Devin a smoldering look.

Devin’s eyes grew wide. “Damn Baby!”

“What, baby?” she asked innocently.

“You just looked like you wanted her more than I do.”

Rachel grinned at him. “Would you like that Dev? Would you like to watch me kissing her?”

“C’mon Rach…”

Rachel looked back at Rogesh and saw the young Indian man looking quite uncomfortable. “Sorry Rogesh. It’s a little game we play. The point is don’t you think Rana is pretty?”

“Of course I do. I just know that she’s not into me. Do you want to hear something funny,” he asked.

“What?” asked Devin.

“Her parents are practically already planning our wedding. They want her to marry an Indian man and they think I’m the most eligible guy on their radar. Rana doesn’t want to go with an Indian guy. My parents don’t care who I go with. But the thing is…”

“You really like her, don’t you?” observed Rachel.

Rogesh blushed even deeper than he did when Rachel and Devin were kidding. “I do. But she likes Paul Prescott. She wanted me to cover for her with her parents while she went on a date with him on Saturday. Now Sandra is making us double date with her and Derek.”

Rachel thought about the JV Quarterback and his blond hair and blue eyes. She had dated him for about a week, but she broke up with him when he pushed her for sex on their first date. “Rogesh, honey? Paul’s an asshole. He tried to fuck me on our first date. If you care about her, you don’t want Rana to go out with him.”

Rogesh frowned. He had no idea what to do. He didn’t want Rana to get hurt, but he knew that she was really hung up on Paul. He wasn’t sure what he could do.

* * *

“Mr. Carson, please have a seat,” said the big man from behind his desk.

“Mr. Fitzwater, I’m not sure why you would request to see me. After all, Mrs. Seales is my guidance counselor,” smirked Derek.

“Mr. Carson, let’s cut to the chase.”

“By all means, Mr. Fitzwater.”

“Your little friend has not come to see me.”

“And what little friend is this?”

“You know very well who I mean.”

“If you are talking about Miss Turner, isn’t it is quite obvious why?” frowned Derek.

“Well, son, I don’t think you realize how much trouble the two of you are in.”

“How am I in any trouble, other than the week of detention is concerned?”

“I was quite shocked to hear that several students I had arranged to attend a student leadership conference never showed up at it. You all skipped it.”

“We both know there was no ‘student leadership conference’. Sandra asked you for the afternoon off and you gave it to her for letting you maul her tits.”

“So she did tell you after all,” sneered Fitzwater.

“Yeah. So before you start talking about how much trouble we are in, you should think about your job and your pension, you old pervert!” glared Derek.

“Who do you think people will believe? A bitch slut and a truant or a respectable guidance counselor?”

“I know who my mother will believe.”

“So? Parents are always biased for their kids. In the end, ‘the respectable guidance’ counselor always wins.”

Derek knew that to a certain extent, Fitzwater’s smugness was somewhat warranted. Still, he decided to play along. “OK. For arguments sake, what do you want?”

“I want Miss Turner to see me and honor our deal. If she does, I’ll tell Vice Principal Simmons to cancel your detentions.”

“And if she doesn’t,” grimaced Derek, barely controlling his urge to hit the man.

“Your detentions will stand and I will tell the principal and your parents that you cut afternoon classes and never showed up at the leadership conference. This will include Miss Ramirez, Miss Harrellson and Miss Morris.”

Derek smiled. “So what leadership conference were we supposed to be attending?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m sure I can find one,” he grinned.

“What about permission slips signed by our parents?”

“I’m sure I can ‘find’ them too.”

“They will deny signing them.”

“What? Mr. Carson? I’m shocked that you would forge your parent’s signature on a permission slip,” he grinned.

Derek had to concede that Fitzwater had done a fairly good job of covering his bases, still he knew he could rattle the big man and the confidence he was exuding. Derek remembered how he had used Tim Clausen’s prevailing emotion of anxiety against him by increasing it. Likewise, he decided that he would inflate Fitzwater’s confidence to a ridiculous level. The big man’s arrogance made it easy. “You don’t get it do you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“My mother. Do you think she’ll believe a fat fuck like you or her honor student son?”

“I don’t care who she believes, she can’t do shit to me!” he laughed maniacally.

“My mother likes to dig. She’ll find a hole in your stupid little plot and you will go down in flames!”

“There is no hole. I’m too fucking smart for all of you!”

“You fucking pervert!”

“You can’t do shit to me!” he spat.

“I bet you just love to fuck your students.”

The guidance counselor continued to bluster. “I’m gonna love fucking that slut of a girlfriend of yours!”

“I won’t let you,” said Derek evenly.

“You can’t stop me! I’ll fuck anybody I want; even your mother!” he yelled.

Derek grinned as the phone rang and Fitzwater turned as white as a sheet.

* * *

“He didn’t!” laughed Sandy, as she was shushed by the librarian.

Derek nodded at the librarian and mouthed “Sorry” before continuing with Sandy with a whisper. “He did. I’m sure at least a half dozen people heard what he said. From what I understand, the rest of his afternoon appointments were canceled and he spent that time behind closed doors with the Principal.”

“Serves that bastard right.”

“You know we’re going to have to face the music about cutting school.”

“Yeah. I’m not so much worried about my folks as I am yours,” said Sandy.

“I’m hoping that they’ll understand the extenuating circumstances.”

Then a terrible thought came into Sandy’s mind. “What if they ground you? What if Maya, Mindy or Chantelle’s parents ground them… he… could take us away from you… our families,” she said as a tear came to her eye.

“I won’t let that happen,” said Derek resolutely.

* * *

On the field, Derek had a solid practice, managing to shake off a lot of the rust of the past couple of weeks. He got the timing of his swing a little better. He hit some solid line drives at batting practice. Derek also looked sharp in the field. He remembered last season playing short and worked a number of late inning double plays with Marco Ogelby, who played second. Marco and Flynny knew that Derek was needed to stabilize the team’s infield defense. Today was a good indication of how sharp the infield looked as the ball was really flying around the field. At one point, Derek made an impressive diving stab, deep in the hole and made a strong throw to nip a runner at first. Even Jon Sizemore nodded his head in approval.

After practice, Derek ran over to first. “Hey Flynny? Wait up.”

“Hey, looking sharp, Carson?”

“You made a nice pick on the play when Jenkins tried to take me out on that double play. I thought that I threw it too high.”

“At six-four not much goes over my head,” he laughed.

“To change the subject, I think I may have helped you with the problem we were discussing yesterday.”

“No shit. Who?”

“Do you see who’s sitting up in the stands next to my girlfriend?”

Dean look over at the direction Derek indicated. “Connie? Connie Martin?”

“Yeah. Apparently she’s into you.”

“No way! She was my ex, Cindy’s best friend. I guess she was kind of off limits for that reason… so I never thought of asking her out.”

“She’s pretty damn hot though, right?”

“She is,” smiled Dean. “And you say she’s interested?”

“See for yourself,” smiled Derek, as he led his friend over to the bleachers and his future girlfriend.

* * *

Brett and Suzanne were talking on their cell phones after school.

“Suzanne, are you sure you want to go?”

“I have to say goodbye,” she said with a faraway look in her eye that he could almost see from her tone.

“My mom isn’t home, so I’ll see if Derek can give us a lift to the shelter before it closes at 5:30.

“Thanks honey,” she said as she felt a tear come to her eye.

“I love her to,” said Brett somberly.

“I know.”

* * *

Veronica Carson was putting away some groceries when the phone rang.

“Hi Mom,”

“Hi Derek. How was practice?”

“It went well. Mom?”

“What honey?”

“Sandy and I need to sit down with her parents and you and Dad at her house later.”

“Does it have something to do with the phone call I received from Principal Hanson?”

“Probably. Sandy already spoke to her Mom.”

“OK. Are you coming home for dinner?”

“No. I have to stop by the shelter with Suzanne and Brett so they can say goodbye to Sadie.”

“Honey, I’m not sure that is a good idea…”

“Mom, Suzanne needs to see her one last time.”

Veronica sighed. “OK. What time do the Turners want us?”

“Seven-thirty.”

“OK, I’ll tell your Father. We’ll be there.”

* * *

“I’m sorry, they’ve already taken Sadie,” said Irma Endicott.

“But I thought that…” started Suzanne.

“They decided that her suffering was too great, so they took her early.”

Suzanne collapsed to her knees and started to cry. Brett and Mrs. Endicott tried to comfort her, but she was inconsolable.

As the two bereft children left the shelter, Irma shook her head sadly. She had not wanted it to be handled this way, but it would have been unfair to the children otherwise. She knew that this was the right course of action. The others had felt the same way. No matter what, Irma was proud of Suzanne. She had been such a stoic cold little thing when she had walked into the shelter last year asking to volunteer. She had become such a caring young woman over the past week. Brett and his family appeared to have had a profound effect on her. Hopefully this would continue regardless of Sadie.

The reaction to Sandy’s news about Fitzwater and the kids cutting school at the Turner’s house was a mixture of shock, concern and anger.

“First of all, I’m very concerned for Sandy and what she experienced, but you two certainly made a number of poor choices,” stated Veronica Carson flatly.

“I know, Mom. It was stupid,” agreed Derek.

“Mrs. Carson, it was really all my fault…” started Sandy.

“No honey, Derek could have said ‘no’. Son, I’m really kind of surprised and disappointed,” said Rick.

Paul cut in, “Rick and Ronnie, we really are sorry about this, I’m sure Sandy did manipulate Derek. Still, at the same time, Fitzwater manipulated my little girl and to me that is the bigger issue.”

“I can see why you feel that way Paul. I think you have a point. Sandy is a victim here, though she did exercise some bad judgment,” said Ronnie.

“I know,” agreed Maggie.

“Mom can I say something?” asked Sandy.

“Sure honey.”

“Mr. C. and Mrs. C., Derek tried to talk me out of skipping school. I think he went along with this just to make sure that I didn’t do something reckless. Something happened that day which changed me. I was already beginning to really hate myself and my life. When I think that I let the man put his hands on me I lost complete respect for who I was as a person. On that day, Derek showed me compassion. He was willing to risk getting into trouble to try to keep me out of trouble. It was then that he reminded me who I really was. I had been so lost for a long time. Derek found me and I will always love him for that,” she said squeezing Derek’s hand tightly, as some tears trickled down her face.

“Is this true, honey?” asked Ronnie.

“I was worried about Sandy and I did manage to save her from making a big mistake, but…” started Derek.

Sandy interrupted looking Derek in the eye. “Derek, I didn’t even tell you this but I think you saved my life that day. I was going to use the dress and lingerie I was going to buy at the mall to seduce some stranger at a sleazy bar.”

Everyone’s jaw dropped including Derek. Sandy continued. “I hated my life. I think I wanted to do something that would put my life in jeopardy. I hated myself and I guess I figured that this would be a way to end things.”

“Sandy!” started Derek before he was interrupted.

“Let me finish, honey…. Then Derek said something sweet when we were at the mall. I looked in his eyes and I saw my old friend. I saw that someone cared for me beyond what I looked like. Nobody had done that before. I made a choice at that moment. Mom and Dad, Derek saved my life that day. If he hadn’t cut school, I might not be here right now,” she said, as she leaned over and hugged him.

“Sandy…” he whispered.

“What I just said was true,” she whispered back.

* * *

“Honey, it was just a dog,” said Mrs. Rowan, prompting a glare from Suzanne.

“A dog I loved and could have saved if you didn’t let that sadist live here!” spat Suzanne.

“Show some respect. That is your older brother you are talking about.”

“How can you condone what he’s done?”

“Your brother is ill and needs our understanding, patience and love.”

“My brother is a psychopath who tortured and killed two dogs and four cats that we know of! I could have saved Sadie if she could have lived here. Because he lives here, I couldn’t because the court forbids us to keep pets. In my mind, he has just killed one more dog!” she screamed. She ran up to her room, slammed the door, flung herself onto her bed and began to cry.

* * *

In Sandy’s bedroom, Derek and Sandy began to undress.

“I still can’t believe our folks are letting us do this,” said Derek.

“You walk on water as far as my parents are concerned. They could tell that I needed you and I really do, baby,” murmured Sandy.

“You were really going to go to some bar?”

“Remember how I said I hated myself? I really did. After Jon tried to humiliate me by feeling me up at that assembly last month and I broke up with him, I really began to feel sorry for myself. I really did hate my life and began to act more outrageously. I think that led to the decision to let that bastard paw my breasts and pushed me to do something really dangerous. Whether he knows it or not, your powerful friend saved my life that day.”

“What about that part about looking at me?”

“I knew that you cared for me. I could see that you felt that way about all of us even after Mindy, Maya and I had been such bitches to you. You defended us against the man. You saved us. When I accused you of wanting to rape us after, it was that last tiny bitchy part of me trying to keep to my plan to hurt myself. When you said that you were stuck and that you didn’t want to hurt us, I knew you were telling the truth.”

“Well, I was. I tried to convince myself that I hated you, but I kept thinking back to the look you gave me when the stranger stopped you from speaking and when you begged me to accept you. I didn’t see ‘Sandra Turner, the bitch’.”

“You saw Sandy Turner, your old friend.”

“Yes.”

“See Derek Carson? On that day, you saved me in more ways than one,” she smiled, drew his head to hers and they passionately kissed. Soon there bodies became overheated and he was on her. Within minutes he had exploded into her. She hadn’t achieved her own orgasm, but she was both emotionally and physically exhausted and didn’t care. She was with the man she loved and that thought had taken away the fear and pain of the last couple of days. She cuddled in his arms and they fell fast asleep.
