The Consequences and Rewards of Playing Hookey

Chapter 14

New School: Week 2

Derek woke up Monday morning feeling kind of disoriented. He had been sleeping with Sandy for the past three nights. This morning it was strange not to feel her limbs tangled with his. The Carsons and Turners had decided that school night cohabitation was definitely out as a rule. While he understood, it still made the feeling of her not being there strange.

* * *

“Carrie, wakey, wakey ” grinned Sandy.

“Did I oversleep?”

“Yeah, but I let you sleep in, I could tell you needed it.”

“Are your folks still here?”

“No, they had an early breakfast meeting with some prospective clients. Just grab a shower, get dressed and you can get something quick to eat. Derek should be here in about twenty-five minutes.”

“Thanks Sandy.”

Sandy watched Carrie run through the door to the bathroom and smiled. She had always wanted a little sister and now she had one.

* * *

“They’re here!” yelled Brett as he burst out the door with Tom on his heels. They ran to Derek’s car.

“Hey honey,” said Tom, as he settled in next to Carrie and gave her a peck on the lips.

“Hey baby,” she smiled, as she nestled into him after the kiss.

“So, what is the plan for the day?” asked Brett to Sandy.

Sandy laughed. “Today, we break up Maya and Carlos.”

“We also have to start making things hard on Rogesh and Rana,” said Derek.

“And, you are going to talk to Jon about baseball,” said Sandy.

“We had this talk…” he started.

Sandy faced him as he stopped at a red light. “We did. You are going to tell Jon not to do me any favors, but if the team wants you to play, you’ll play.”

“Yeah, I guess so, but I don’t think Jon will go for that and I’m not playing if this is a favor to you.”

“OK, I see your point… but I’m willing to if…”

“I’m not,” said Derek. The light turned green and they proceeded to school.

* * *

Jon saw an interesting sight. He not only saw Derek and Sandra walking arm and arm but also one of the dweeby Nilsen twins doing the same with that slutty little hottie Carie Osterling. “Been there, banged that,” he laughed, as he thought of both girls.

Carrie and Tom peeled off to talk privately.

Jon then saw Connie Martin approach the remaining three. “This should be interesting,” he thought.

“Hi Derek, Brett… Sandra,” said Connie, sweetly.

“Martin, what do you want?” asked “Sandra” in an exasperated tone.

“Nothing sweetie… at least from you,” she smiled. “Derek, I was hoping that we could set up a meeting tomorrow. I’ve already started looking for a DJ and am looking for feedback.”

Derek looked at Sandy who shrugged. “Connie, I don’t think that I’ll be able to do the committee after all.”

Connie looked grief stricken. “Sandra, I can’t believe that you would…”

“It’s not my choice. It’s Derek’s. He may be playing baseball after today.”

“Is that true, Derek?”

“There is a chance, though I’m not positive… so don’t schedule any meetings on my behalf because I might not be able to make them.”

“Otherwise, you can make it?” she asked hopefully

Derek instinctively turned to Sandy, but didn’t wait for a reaction. “I guess I should be able to make it.”

Connie turned to Brett. “Is tomorrow OK with you, Brett,” she said, batting her lovely dark eyelashes at him.

“I…. I think so,” he somewhat blurted.

“Good, well at least I’m assured that one of you won’t stand me up,” said Connie, as she flashed a toothy smile and wandered away.

“Hmmm..” grinned Sandy, staring at Brett.

“What?” he asked.

“That girl’s got some balls,” she laughed.

“What do you mean,” asked Derek.

Sandy laughed. “Not only was she trying to flirt with you right under my nose, but at the same time, she was flirting with Brett to make you jealous.”

“I don’t know… she smiled really brightly at Brett,” laughed Derek.

Brett shrugged. “Come on, Derek, she’s into you, not me.”

Sandy softened. “You know Brett… she’s not seeing anyone right now. I can put in a good word.”

“Yeah, like she’d ever go out with me.”

Derek put his hand on Brett’s shoulder. “She could do a lot worse, pal.”

Sandy grinned. She had an idea. “You know, Brett, I’m going to make your stock soar off the charts. Derek go over to talk to Tom and Carrie.”

“OK?” he said quizzically.

When Derek had turned his back to walk to Tom and Carrie, Sandy smiled at Brett, while making sure that Connie could see and hear her from where she was canvassing for committee members. “You know, Brett, you could do a lot better than her. If I weren’t seeing Derek, I think I could be interested,” she said as she leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the lips, a hug and then she glared at Connie, before whispering “You’re welcome” in his ear and walking over to Derek.

Brett blushed as he caught Connie’s eyes looking him up and down.

Jon Sizemore, who was still looking on in amazement, shook his head, as he saw Connie Martin giving one of the dweeby Nilsen twins a smoldering stare. “This is definitely not normal,” he thought.

* * *

Derek and Sandy were eating in the Cafeteria. “But weren’t you trying to set Brett up with Suzanne Rowan?” asked Derek.

“Well, you yourself said they weren’t having a romantic relationship. Knowing the way Suzanne looks at life, I’m sure she’ll be happy to get out of this arrangement with Brett.”

“First of all, Brett told me that there wasn’t anything romantic going on, but I’m not sure that Suzanne feels that way. She seemed to really open up to him.”

“I guess. I just feel kind of guilty for sticking Brett with Suzanne. Look how happy Tom and Carrie and Devin and Rachel are. Brett is a good guy. He deserves to get laid and now Connie Martin will be happy to oblige,” laughed Sandy.

Derek shook his head. “I know you are new to this being nice thing…”

“Not new, just out of practice,” she corrected.

“OK, ‘out of practice’. My point is that while Brett might not turn Connie down, he isn’t looking for that.”

“If you’re worried about Connie not being smart enough for him…”

“No, I know Connie is a smart girl. She’s in a couple of my classes…”

“And a few of mine,” she added.

“The problem is that Connie is a shallow girl.”

“So is Suzanne, isn’t that the point? Getting shallow girls to get beyond that and to help nice, smart guys like Brett… wasn’t that what we were trying to do?”

“Here’s the thing. I don’t think Suzanne is as shallow as you think. I think Brett really likes her and cares for her. I also sense she really likes him… maybe even more.”

“Shit! And I sicked Connie Martin on him.”

“That may not be a bad thing. He’ll just have to decide what he wants and then do the right thing.”

“Speaking of doing the right thing, I have to go handle that other matter we talked about.” she said.

“Are you sure you don’t want my help?” he asked.

“No. It’s my mess and I need to clean it up. But thanks…”

Sandra was interrupted by Jon Sizemore’s voice, as he walked over to the couple.

“Hey Sandra? Can I have a quick word with Carson?” he said with a leering wink at her.

“I don’t know. Can you?” she glared and Derek laughed.

“Easy tigress. Jon and I are old teammates. I’m guessing that he just wants to catch up,” grinned Derek.

“OK, baby. I’ll catch up with YOU at the library sixth period,” she smiled, as she leaned over and kissed Derek.

For a moment, Derek watch Sandy walk away. He was worried about where she was going, but she seemed confident she could handle her mission. “Hopefully she would be right,” he thought, before turning to his new companion. He anticipated what would come next, but had to play along. “OK, Jon, what can I do for you?”

“Carson, I was thinking…”

“A first for him,” thought Derek to himself.

“The team just hasn’t been the same since the star benchwarmer isn’t on it this year. I was wondering if you’d like for me to put in a good word for you with Coach?”

“Nothing personal Jon, but why would you want to do that?”

“As I said… the team hasn’t been the same. Just not as fun. Also, I wanted to do it as a favor to Sandra just to show I have no hard feelings.” He grinned cockily.

Derek was pissed, so he decided to have a little fun. He flooded Jon with feelings of anxiety. He had a brief headache, but using the “rocking motion” his “friend” had taught him, he was easily able to break through Jon’s subconscious resistance.

Jon felt a sudden headache come over him. Then he looked at Derek. The kid looked confident. “I guess who wouldn’t be confident if they tamed the hottest, meanest bitch in school?” ran through Jon’s mind. He thought he had, but in the end, all his effort all it did was to make her an even bigger bitch. He had to marvel that Carson could do what he couldn’t. Jon began to get nervous.

Derek looked at Jon to see tell tale signs of his handiwork. Jon was sweating. His cocky look had faded into a nervous one. Derek’s confident grin brightened. He knew he had the baseball star just where he wanted him. “Jon, you know what I think?”

“No,” Jon uttered cautiously.

“I think that while Ryan Costello is a good hitter, he can’t field a lick. He doesn’t belong at any infield position except perhaps at first… certainly not at shortstop, where I’ll guarantee he’ll lose more games with his glove than he’ll win with his bat. So give me a break. I come back and I’ll easily start two thirds of the games at short, maybe all of them if Flynny balks at playing short when he’s not pitching or playing first. So don’t waste my time with ‘favors’ for ex-girlfriends and team bench or locker room chemistry. You guys need me a hell of a lot more than I need you.”

“What happened, Carson? I thought you were a competitive guy.”

“I am. I just don’t like having smoke blown up my act by someone who I’m convinced was responsible for me not making the team in the first place.”

Jon was really concerned. He was hoping to manipulate the situation to his advantage to allow himself to save face with his coach, become a hero with his teammates, get Sandra owing him and manipulating Carson into trusting him, so he could find out what was happening. Now it was all spinning out of control. He had to do something.

“Look Carson, I’ve never liked you,” he admitted anxiously. “But you’re a nice little shortstop who can flash the leather. We don’t need any more lumber in the lineup. We just need someone who can anchor the infield.” He paused again. “I still like Turner… I’ll admit it and I want to do something to make her happy, but no strings… I promise.”

Derek smiled. He had everything he wanted. He had just earned his way back on the team on his own terms. Then he thought about the girls. This decision would affect them too. He would need to get their input and ultimately their blessing. He knew his power over them would hold sway, but he really cared for all four and knew that it had to be discussed among the five of them. “OK, Jon. You’ve given me something to think about. Sandra, my folks and I will talk about it.”

“Just to remind you, the season starts Thursday. Our last scrimmage is tomorrow against King of Prussia,” stated Jon.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” said Derek, as he walked off to his first afternoon class.

Jon Sizemore just stood there shaking his head, trying to figure out how he could have given away his advantage.

* * *

“I can’t say that I’m not disappointed, Miss Turner. Very disappointed!” spat Roscoe Fitzwater from behind his desk.

Sandy turned on “Sandra mode” as she faced her accuser. “I am too. I’m disappointed in how a grown man would allow himself to feel up a minor.”

“Listen Girly! You are a horny little slut. You liked it and you know it.”

“I hated every moment your slimy paws were on my breast. I let you do it so I could get what I wanted. Now I am terminating this arrangement and you have nothing to say about it.”

“Don’t be so sure, bitch” he spat.

“What are you getting at?”

“Does your new boyfriend know what kind of slut he’s going out with?”

“Sandra” laughed haughtily. “Derek knows everything about us.”

Fitzwater began to get uneasy. He knew the Carson boy’s mother was a powerful member of the Town Council. Still, he gambled that she would not risk the scrutiny her son’s girlfriend would bring on her political ambitions.

“Well, Miss Turner. I’m going to tell you something. You better change your attitude about me, or not only will I not write you a recommendation for college, I will send a negative letter to all of the Deans of Admission of all of the schools we talked about you applying to.”

Sandy was shocked. She thought Fitzwater would just back down. She had the muffled recording of her being felt up, but despite the awkward context, this wasn’t hard evidence. All it would do is reflect badly upon her. She tried to appeal to any shred of decency the man might have. “Look, I was a bitch. I’ll admit it. But, like you pointed out, I have a new guy in my life. I’m trying to change…”

“You can’t change. Once a bitch slut, always a bitch slut,” he leered.

Sandy got up and turned to walk to the door, fighting the urge to cry.

“You’ll be back, slut,” he laughed as her hand reached for the door knob.

* * *

After the bell, Brett got out of his chair. He was on his way to meet up with his brother at the media center, when he was awakened from his thoughts.

“Hey… Brett, right?” asked Connie,

“Yeah…”

“Well, I’m glad I guessed right. I think I can tell the difference between you and Tom now.”

He thought, “I’m sure it didn’t hurt Mr. Thayer calling my name in attendance.” as he smiled nervously, nodding his head.

“I just wanted to let you know that I heard through the grapevine that Derek will probably be playing baseball, so he won’t be able to be my co-chair, though I hope he can still help. I don’t know how much he told you about what I’m trying to do with the prom.”

“He mentioned that you were trying to get attendance up, that you were worried people won’t show.”

“Exactly. I was counting on working closely with Derek to try to come up with a way to be more inclusive. Can I be honest with you, Brett?” she asked, showing her lovely brown eyes.

“Sure...” he managed to get out, as he felt himself shudder. She leaned in closer to him.

“We’ve known each other since, what? The third grade?”

“Sounds about right.”

“Anyway, recently I’ve realized what an idiot I’ve been about friends… and guys in particular.”

Brett just stood there, speechless.

“I’ve been dating a lot of guys that have been really stupid. Sure, they’re attractive and popular, but I’m not a dumb girl, am I?”

“No… you are in three of my classes,” he managed to blurt out, causing her to laugh.

“Brett honey… you don’t have to be so nervous. I don’t bite…. At least on the first date,” she laughed again, flipping her lustrous brown hair back in the process.

The heady smell of her shampoo and perfume from their close quarters was beginning to make Brett’s head swim.

“I guess what I’m saying is I’d like to get to know you a little better. In a couple of years we will be in college. Guys I’ve been with like Kevin and Scott are OK, but they aren’t the kind of guys that you plan a future with. You are,” she paused before continuing. “I’m not saying that we’re going to get together for sure or anything. I just think that I need to start looking at prospective boyfriends differently. Do you see what I mean?”

“I guess… I’m really flattered, but I’m kind of seeing somebody lately.”

“Are you talking about that freshman Cheerleader? She’s a pretty girl but come on honey.”

“What?”

“She doesn’t really like you… at least not like that. Before lunch, I ran into Sandra and she told me that the field was open concerning you. Is she right?”

“I don’t know… I mean I guess so… I think I need to talk to Suzanne…”

Connie smiled. “You see, that is why you would make such a great boyfriend. You’re sweet and considerate to a fault. You’re also pretty damn cute for a bookworm. Do you want to know a secret?”

“What?”

“I like to read too. I bet we have more in common than you realize.”

“I guess…”

“Look, Brett… If Derek is out, I’ll need someone to co-chair the committee with me. Can I count on you to help me?”

“I guess…”

“Good. We need to really get together and talk about some things. Are you free tonight?”

“Actually, I have plans…”

“Can’t you break them… for me?” she said, as she leaned in even closer and kissed him on the cheek.

“Uhh…” he groaned.

“Good. I knew I could count on you,” she assumed with a smile and walked to her next class.

* * *

“What am I going to do, Derek? Connie seems like she really is into me, but I know Suzanne is counting on me.”

“Well I know what Sandy would say.”

“What?”

“She’d say, ‘go for it’ with Connie.”

“What would you say?”

“I’d say, you have to listen to your heart. It will tell you the right thing to do.”

“It’s telling me to talk to Suzanne.”

“Then do that,” smiled Derek.

* * *

“Well I’m not surprised,” said Suzanne’s voice over his cell, as Brett was sitting on the school bus.

“Why?”

“Because you’re a really sweet guy. She’d be an idiot if she didn’t notice that.”

“But I feel like I’m letting you down.”

“You’re not. You’re even helping me tonight instead of being with her.”

“Yeah, but I have a meeting with her after school tomorrow.”

“That’s OK, we can talk tomorrow night.”

“But what should I do? I mean…”

“Brett, you should go for it.”

“But what about you?”

“Are you saying that you have feelings for me?”

“Yes… No… I don’t know… I mean I care for you and I think you’re beautiful…”

“Brett… she’s beautiful too, your age and not fucked up.”

“You’re not fucked up.”

“Trust me. I’ve known myself a lot longer than you’ve known me and I can tell you that I’m really fucked up,” she laughed, as unseen to Brett, a couple of tears began to run down her face.

“Stop talking about my friend like that. You’re amazing! You have a big heart and you’re quite loving! Regardless of what happens, we’re going to be friends, I promise you that.”

“You mean it?” she sniffled.

“More than you could know,” he said earnestly.

Suzanne hung up her phone, as she sat at the very back of her school bus. She felt incredibly sad. When Sandra Turner had made her hang out with Brett, she had been so resentful towards him. Now she could see the truth. Brett was an amazing guy. He deserved to be dating the hot president of the junior class. Still, the thought made her cry. That coupled with the thought of losing Sadie was even worse. When she got home, she ran up to her room and cried her eyes out.

* * *

A few minutes before cheerleading practice, Derek met with his girls. “So, you see I still think we can make time for each other.”

“Derek, you know whatever you want, I’m behind you,” smiled Sandy.

“We all feel the same way,” said Chantelle.

“OK. Baseball it is,” he smiled. “Assuming the coach still wants me.”

“If he doesn’t he’s an idiot,” said Mindy giving him a hug.

“Hey, do you see what I see?” laughed Sandy as she looked down at the cheerleader practice field.

“I see Traci isn’t wasting any time,” said Mindy, as she looked at Traci Williams running her hands all over Carlos Ruiz, while he had his hand on her shoulder.”

“So, you ready to lose your boyfriend?” laughed Sandy.

“I’ve been ready for about a week,” responded Maya.

Derek laughed. “Well I wish I could stay and watch this little drama unfold, but I’m quite sure I’ll get the details later.”

“I’m sure you will,” replied Sandy.

As Derek walked over to talk to his coach, he looked back at Sandy. He was worried about her talk with “Old Man” Fitzwater. During their free period in the library, she claimed everything was OK, but he was worried. He sensed something was wrong. For now he had to clear that thought from his head, as he approached his coach.

“Coach, I heard you might be looking for a new shortstop,” he grinned, as he saw his coach break out in a smile.

* * *

“So, how is project ‘Save Sadie’ going?” asked Mrs. Nilsen.

“I don’t know Mom. I guess this is a long shot. I just feel terrible. You should see her mom, she’s such a sweet dog,” said Brett, before pausing “To complicate things, the president of the class asked me to co-chair the Prom Committee with her.”

“Her?” asked his mother sounding interested.

“Yes. Her name is Connie. Something even weirder happened.”

“What?”

“She strongly hinted she wanted to be my girlfriend.”

“What about Suzanne?”

“We’re really just friends… I guess. She told me I should go for it.”

“Do you like this other girl?”

“She’s beautiful and smart. She seems to really appreciate me and likes the fact that I’m smart…”

“But…”

“I don’t know, Mom. I guess I’m just confused. This is all happening so fast…”

“Do you have feelings for Suzanne?”

“I guess.”

“Then first of all, you need to think about what you want.”

“If I go out with Connie, I could be one of the most popular guys in school.”

“Is that what you want?”

“Not really, I guess.”

Ilsa Nilsen looked at her son with pride. She had always been proud of her sons for being nice kids who worked hard in school and got good grades. It was times like these that reminded her of how sensitive and caring both her boys were. Tom had proven his mettle defending Carrie. Now Brett was proving his capacity for kindness and caring by how he was trying to save a dog and how he was concerned for the girl who loved it; despite having a beautiful, popular girl interested in him. “I guess you’ll just have to figure out what you want,” she said softly.

Brett sighed “I know, Mom” and then he proceeded to his room.

Ilsa felt bad about this. Brett was such a sensitive soul, who had so little experience in the world of romantic intrigue. To top it off, she could tell that he was really worried about the dog. Part of her felt tempted right then and there to call Mrs. Endicott at the shelter and agree to take Sadie, but in a way this was another life lesson he would need to learn. She remembered how much of a handful Shadow had been when he first arrived at their home. She was the one stuck dealing with it. She couldn’t bear the thought of her seeing her home turned upside down again. Well, she had friends she could talk to about the Sadie. Maybe one of them would adopt her. Then she remembered what Brett said about the financial layout for uncertain operations and for the appearance of the dog. “Maybe it’s all for the best,” she sighed to herself wistfully.

* * *

Derek and Sandy lay on her bed studying and working on homework.

So… you almost done?” grinned Derek.

“Yep, but I can finish it later.” Sandy grinned back as she pulled Derek into her arms.

Soon they were kissing. Sandy felt his hands pulling down her sweats. “You know, I’m worried about you, right,” moaned Derek, as he felt her hand unbuttoning his fly and quickly finding his member.

“It’ll be OK, I promise.”

Derek pulled her hand from his cock. “Look at me.”

Sandy felt her eyes automatically lock onto his.

“No fair,” she complained.

“I could just simply order you to tell me what happened, but I won’t. I will tell you this. You will not let that man touch you again for any reason. If I find out that he is giving you trouble, I will destroy him in every sense of the word. That will probably mean me going to prison. So, I’m going to ask you again. What happened?”

Sandy told him.

Derek was pissed, but after a few moments he calmed down. “Thank you for saving me from the ‘big house’.”

“Derek, I don’t want you to get into trouble for something I did.”

“You were a different person then. Besides, he’s the adult. He should know better.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Leave that up to me,” he said, as he saw Sandy begin to cry. “Don’t worry, baby. Trust me. This will all work out,” he said before starting to kiss away her tears.

Soon their mouths and groins were connected to each respectively. Sandy’s sadness and worry disappeared as her lust rose. She felt confident in her boyfriend’s ability to handle the situation. Now she could enjoy the sensation of him penetrating her over and over again, as her mind faded into a rapturous bliss.

Likewise, once Derek’s anger morphed into resolve, he was able to enjoy the mind-melting desire he felt for the girl he loved. The thought that she was his and he would keep it that way turned him on as much as Sandy knowing that she was his. For the first time he had no doubt about what would happen in September concerning them. She had been telling him this all along, but his insecurity couldn’t accept the truth. As he had his epiphany, he kissed her deeply and fired into her with every ounce of energy in his being before Sandy’s body bucked underneath him like a mechanical bull gone haywire.

They did not talk for several minutes when it was over. Derek lay there on top of her. He felt her breathing heavily underneath him, before rolling off of her and onto his back. They lay together like that for a while. Finally she broke the silence. “I’m sorry, Babe. I’ll never keep anything from you again. I promise.”

“Me too. If we;re going to be together, we’ll need to trust and be able to count on each other.”

“I know. I love you, Derek”

“I love you too sweetheart,” he said as he gave her a kiss, got dressed and drove home for dinner.
