She was replacing the last girl, who disappeared under suspicious circumstances. She was organizing fantasy books when this whole predicament started. She had her Walkman playing Justin Timberlake. She hummed to the music, stopping suddenly when she came across a red leather covered book. ‘This doesn’t belong in the stack. Does it?’ She checked the binding of the book for a code number. It wasn’t marked. She turned the heavy book over, opening it carefully. Its pages were old and thin. It had strange writing on it. She sat down the other books she had in her hands on the floor. Nia flipped through the pages, finally reaching something she actually understood She began to read the words on the page: ‘Ridley stood on the high hill, his eyes closed and his shoulder length black hair flowing in the wind. Marina walked up next to him, touching his shoulder. “I just need one more thing to cast the summoning spell, Ridley.” “What is it?” “That owl feather you’re carrying.” He handed her the feather, watching her walk away. He could hear her speaking the words.’ That’s when Nia was really beginning to be wierded out because the summoning spell that Marina was using, Nia had heard it before. In fact she knew it by heart: The four winds flow all to one direction, Bring nigh the one, The girl of the revolution, The girl with hair that shines the sun, With eyes that shine like a million blue diamonds, Let her be beside me, In the fight, The reason that I call her here, The reason that I call her near. Nia repeated the spell word for word, suddenly feeling dizzy. She blacked out just as the music ended. She heard voices around her, two female and one male. “Is she dead?” asked the male. “No, you idiot. She isn’t dead,” said one female. “I can’t believe the spell worked,” said the other female. Her eyes snapped open and she bolted up. She looked around her; she wasn’t at the library anymore. She slowly got to her feet, stumbling away from the three strangers. The man looked familiar. A little too familiar. “It can’t be. I can’t be here,” She said realizing that she was still holding the book. Now it was a book of spells, she felt something heavy on her shoulder. It was her pack. She quickly sat back down, dumping the contents on the ground. She separated everything, Marina sitting down next to her. “How can you be the one?” She asked. “I don’t know, Marina. I just don’t know. I don’t even know who you’re talking about. My hair’s brown and so are my eyes,” Nia answered. “Maybe your hair was like the spell said, and you eyes too, in a past life.”It seemed that Marina’s answer could have been right. Nia finally took a nice long look at the contents of her bag: 3 pink vials with the words: ‘Essence of D. Fawkes’ 3 red vials with the words: ‘Blood of M. Evans’ 3 blue vials with the words: ‘Tears of a Phoenix’ 1 large red leather spell book 1 large black leather book containing pictures and bios 1 pairs of tight black leather short shorts 1 tight silver & black leather mini skirt 1 necklace w/ a jeweled cross pendant 1 denim blue corset & 1 black dress. Suddenly a beautiful-but riderless-brown & white painted horse trotted up to them. Nia slowly made her way over to the horse. She reached out to it, letting it sniff her first, before petting it. “You’re a be-auty. Who do you belong to?” She cooed. Ridley pointed out a note tucked into the reins. Nia plucked the note from the reins, unrolling the little scroll. She read the note aloud: “Lady Nia, I knew that you would be coming so I sent Greenleaf to find Marina, because wherever she was; you were likely to be. Legolas sends his love, Arwen and Aragorn say hello, and Gimli says ‘I’ll beat you next time, kid.’ Sincerely, Lord Elrond.’ “How did he know that I would be here?” She asked herself, sudd-enly realizing who told him, “Of course. Galadriel. She must have seen that I would be here so she told him and he sent Greenleaf.” She stroked the horse’s neck, cooing and trilling as she spoke lightly to her. Ridley tapped her on the shoulder. “Not to be rude, but, who are you?” “My name is Nia. Nia Whitecastle. A sorceress…sorta.” “What are these little vials for?” Maria finally chimed in. “The pink ones have blood from a man named Darrien Fawkes, he has the power to turn himself invisible at will, without spells. The red ones have the blood from a young man named Maxwell Evans; he has the power to heal, to generate a force field, to do a lot of things that I can’t remember,” She answered, confusing the trio, “You still have told me who you three are.” Ridley stepped forward and introduced himself, then Marina, and the third person. The third person was Norda, Empress Savina’s personal tracker and close friend. Ridley went and got their horses while Marina helped Nia put the vials and books back into her pack. Nia loaded her pack onto Greenleaf’s back. Ridley returned with the horses. Norda, Ridley, Marina, and Nia mounted their horses and headed for Izmer. They headed for Empress Savina’s counsel. (To Be Continued in the next chapter: The Death Of Marina.) Nia's Jump Into D & D Ch. 02 Nia sat on the steps outside the counsel, waiting to be called. Suddenly she felt Norda tapping her on the shoulder. "They're ready for you now." Norda returned inside. Nia stood up, smoothing down the scarves in her skirt and adjusting her corset top. She put on her shoes, which happened to be her favorite because they were her thigh-high-black-leather-spiked-heel-platform boots. She felt a tall figure next to her. She looked at the figure, it was Legolas and on her other side was Aragorn. "We're not letting you go in there alone," Legolas whispered as they entered the counsel room. The other mages seemed outraged when they saw the two men with her. Empress Savina called for silence. "Who are these men?" Savina demanded. "They are my protectors and closest friends," Nia answered. "I mean their names, girl," Savina snapped. "Well, milady, the blonde, who happens to be an elf, is named Legolas. The other man, a human, is Aragorn," Nia answered calmly. The Empress nodded. "Now who are you?" "My name is Nia, milady. Nia Whitecastle." "Well, Nia, can you tell me why Marina brought you here?" "Milady, I must confess that I do not know why Marina has brought me here. You may know that the spell she used called for a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. Both of which, as you can see, I don't have. My hair used to be blonde as a child but my eyes were never blue." Savina nodded a second time. "Nia, what do these men mean to you?" "For truth, my lady, we are all very close. Aragorn and Legolas are like my brothers, if I had any. I only have sisters, milady. Too many by my count." "How many?" "11, Empress." "What are their names?" "Danica, Ursula, Natasha, Gina, Eve, Ophelia, Narcissa, Samantha, Dreama, Rain, & Ariadne." "Quite a few." "Yes, Empress." "Which one is the oldest?" "Danica is, Empress. She's 35. Ursula is her twin, but the younger of the two." "And?" "Then there's Natasha and Gina who are 28. Natasha was born early in the year and Gina in the last month of the year. Eve, Ophelia, and Narcissa are triplets, they're 26. Then Samantha's 25, Dreama's 24, Rain is 23, Ariadne is 22, and I am 21." "What can you tell me of your world?" "Well, Empress, It's nothing like this. It is much more…well, to put it bluntly, dangerous. Of course, we don't have dragons or any other creature like you have here." The counsel went on until dark. As soon as counsel was over, Rid-ley, Marina, and Nia were called away. Of course, Legolas and Aragorn wanted to go, but Nia told them to stay in Izmer with the Empress. En-emy forces had made it past Clearwater Pass. There was a battle, which Marina did not survive. She was run through the abdomen with a sword. She died in Ridley's arms, confessing her love for him. The next thing she knew she was back in the library, right where she left off. She finished putting away the books and then went home. She took the large red leather book with her. She opened it to the part where Marina died. Then she was back in that world. In that world she had been gone for 3 hours. Norda took her to Ridley, who was in his tent. His tent was far away from the others by at least 450 feet. Norda went back to her camp, leaving Nia outside Ridley's tent. She reached forward, gra-bbing the thick fabric door and opened it. She quietly stepped inside, Justin's 'Still On My Brain' playing in the background; Ridley obviously didn't notice it though. He did hear her enter though. "Where have you been, Nia?"His voice was broken, saddened with too many tears. "I was whisked back to my world, Ridley. I came back as soon as I could. I'm sorry that it took so long." She sat down on his bed next to him, and cradled him in her arms. "They killed her, Nia. They killed Marina." He nuzzled his head in her shoulder, taking in her scent. "I know, Ridley, and if I could have saved her, you know that I would have." She kissed his hair. "Nia?" "Yeah, Ridley?" "Why did Marina bring you here?" "I don't know, Ridley. To be honest, I don't know. She probably thought that I would be of some use to you, but so far not so good. I tried to stop her, Ridley. But she said she could take him. I could see it in her eyes. She knew that she was going to die, and she sent me a kind of mental message that she knew she was going to die, she wanted me to take care of you, blah blah. Well, the thing was that she didn't want me to stop her. There was nothing I could do." She could hear him quietly sobbing. He sat up, looking her in the eyes. She took the cold wet cloth sitting on the stool next to the bed, that's when Justin's 'Nothin' Else' started playing in the background. 'What am I doing?' He thought to himself as she used the cloth to wipe away the tears. She sat the cloth in the bowl of cold water sitting on the floor, bring it out of the water only to have him take it from her and sit it back in the water. He took her face into his hands, stroking her cheek with his thumb. She closed her eyes, giving in to his touch. He brought her the final distance closer, their faces practically touching. He touched her lips gently with his, giving in to the feeling he was feeling for the girl he dreamt about for weeks now. The kissed ended with both of them jumping apart. "What the hell was that about, Ridley?"She gently touched her lips with her fingertips. "I honestly don't know, Nia. It just happened." He was trying to cover up his feelings. She grabbed the red leather book and opened it to the page where the kiss just happened. It read, 'Ridley was lying though. He knew why he kissed her. He just didn't know how to tell her that she was the woman in his dreams.' "I know you're lying to me, Ridley. How come you never told me about your dreams?"She closed the book but not before she put a ribbon in the pages to mark her spot. He could tell that he was busted. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then opened his eyes again. "I lied to you because I didn't know what to say." This time he was telling the truth. "Ridley, can you at least tell me how you feel about me?"She was almost sitting on his lap, letting him lay his head on her shoulder. "I've been dreaming about you for so long, Nia. I could just never place a name with the face." Then he continued to 'spill the beans' to her. She sat there listening to him, stopping him for a second telling him to lie down. He put his head in her lap, with her casually stroking his hair. "Nia, who are you?"He caught her by surprise. "What kind of question is that?"She didn't know how to answer his question without upsetting him. "I mean, your name, your family, that kind of stuff." They both seemed to be relieved. "Well, my full name is…don't laugh…Niaconda Andromeda Whitecastle. My friends call me Castle. My co-workers at the library where I work call me Nia. I have 11 sisters. Danica Marie, Ursula Jane, Natasha Kendall, Gina Desdemona, Eve Ivy, Ophelia Annamaria, Narcissa Michaela, Sama-ntha Thimescura, Dreama Veronica, Rain Belinda, and Ariadne Michelle." "I have no brothers. I wish I did though. I'm kind of getting tired of being the youngest child, especially since it's of 12 girls. You try living in a house with 11 sisters and 3 bathrooms. It's not easy, believe me." They talked for hours. It was only 10 minutes until sunrise when they were ready to go to sleep. But he managed to talk her into staying up longer. They sat out on the hill. He sat against a tree, with Nia bet-ween his legs, her back against his chest, and her head on his shoulder. They sat together and watched the sun rise. She had never seen a sight as beautiful as that. The still sat together, then she fell asleep in his arms. He picked her up, cradling her in his arms, and took her inside the tent. She once said in his dreams that she liked hammocks. He never really understood what they were until a few days ago. He had one made for her. Marina thought it was sweet, even though it was highly doubtful that they would ever meet. That's when Z100 radio started playing in the background, not that they noticed. 'Time…time…time…don't let it get away' He laid her down in the hammock. 'I've been watching you' He held her head up so he could put a pillow under it. 'I've been wanting to see what you could do' He covered her up with a blanket. 'I'm lost without you' He moved a piece of hair out of her face. 'We were close friends' He brought a chair next to the hammock. 'That it's killin' me' Ridley was a little restless. 'It's been to long…is your heart still mine…I'm lost without you…I miss you' 'Gotta get thru this':He paced back and forth, not knowing that it woke her. "What's wrong with you?"She sat up carefully, so not to fall out of the hammock. "Nothing. I was just thinking." He didn't even look at her. She checked the book again. He was contemplating two things: 1st is whether to tell her that he felt something when they kissed and 2nd was whether to…have her. (You know…to make love to her.) When she read that in the book, her face turned red. She made a little 'eep' sound, and it got his attention. "Are you okay, Nia?"He got a little closer. "Yeah. I'm fine." Liar! She slammed the book shut. He sat down on the bed, eventually lying back against the pillows that he propped up behind him. She waited until he fell asleep before she changed her clothes. She stripped down, finding a black robe in her pa-ck. 'Empress Savina must have hid it in there when she brought it to me because I forgot it.' She thought to herself. Nia tied the belt loosely, making it easy to slip out of it. She sat down next to Ridley on the bed. She carefully got back up, snatching the blanket from her hammock bed. She sat back down next to Ridley, lying down next to him, covering them both up with the large fur blanket. She laid her head on his chest, putting one arm under herself and the other around Ridley. Her free hand was over his heart. She could feel his heart race under her touch. He may have been asleep but he was aware that she was touching him. She could feel his warm skin from underneath that thin shirt he was wearing. She could feel the way his muscles quivered under her touch, the way his head would toss from side to side in his sleep. Obviously the way she was touching him was affecting his dream state. He began calling out her name in his sleep. He began to say things in his sleep, so she decided to use this opportunity to find some answers. "Ridley?" "Yeah?" "Do you remember why Marina brought me here?" "She said something about a great woman warrior that influenced the kingdom…in a great revolution." "Which kingdom?" "Izmer. Sometime before it became an empire. The empress knew of this, but they didn't tell me until after you were brought here." She could believe a thing she was hearing. "Ridley, what else about it do you remember?" "I remember a beautiful woman, around your height and size, long flowing hair that was soft and felt like silk in my fingers." "What can you tell me about this woman?" "She was a great fighter." She continued her little conversation with him until deciding to leave him alone. The rest is to come… (Continued in Ch. 3:Nia's Return Home.) Nia's Jump Into D & D Ch. 03 Nia’s return home: The next morning, Ridley and Nia headed back to the castle. Empress Savina was curious as to why it took them so long. All Nia told her was that they needed some time alone to cope with Marina’s death. Savina bought it, even though she was still curious as to why they were acting so skittish around each other. Savina, Norda, and Nia sat alone by a small pond talking about the events that happened since Nia had gotten there. “Nia, I am curious.” Norda rubbed her sore neck. “About what, Norda?” Nia cocked her head to the side. “About why you and Ridley are so…what’s the word you used, Empress?” Norda closed her eyes, listening to the birds in the background. “Skittish?” Savina giggled. “Yes, skittish. About why you and Ridley are so skittish around each other.” Norda opened her eyes, looking Nia straight in the eye. “Well, something happened after you left, Norda.” She grinned sheepishly. Savina looked at Nia with disbelief. “You didn’t???” Savina gaped at Nia. “No, Empress. We only kissed.” She laughed to herself at the young Empress’ naiveté. “Oh. How was it?” Savina gathered closer to Nia, as Norda rose from her seat and left. “Well, it was sweet.” Nia felt a little embarrassed that the Empress was asking her such a question. Savina and Nia sat there for a few more hours just talking about Ridley and the kiss. Nia made Savina promise that she wouldn’t tell anybody that she knew, even Ridley. Savina promised. It was that afternoon at lunch when things started to change. Nia sat next to Empress Savina, on Savina’s right, with Norda on Savina’s left. The meal was quiet, which was strange to them. After lunch, Savina called for her seamstress to make Nia a beautiful gown. She also had Norda fetch Nia a beautiful tiara to wear. At that evening’s counsel, the young Empress had an announcement to make. She called for silence. “I know that the events of the last couple of days have been tragic, but hopefully this announcement of mine will raise some spirits. Enter Nia.” Nia entered the room, her dress flowing behind her. She looked beautiful, like nothing Ridley has ever seen. The counsel went suddenly quiet when Nia entered. “Stand before me.” Savina rose from her seat, “Nia Whitecastle, since you have come here, things have gotten a little better. Some would say that you have been a calming influence on me. No one but Norda would stay by my side and listen to my stories or talk to me about things that some girls my age would talk about. I have made a friend in you, and to that I give great thanks.” Savina nodded toward Nia. “I thank you, Empress.” She bowed to Savina. “I have found out some very interesting information about our guest recently. She is said to be the soul descendant and reincarnation of the great warrioress, Thimescura. What some did not know about Thimescura is that she was a Duchess. So, Nia, my friend, I bestow upon you her title of Duchess and Warrior.” Norda stepped up to Empress Savina with a velvet pillow carrying the tiara. Savina took the tiara off the pillow, Norda bowed then turned and walked away. Nia kneeled before the Empress. Savina carefully set the tiara upon Nia’s head. “Rise, my friend. Rise and tell us about the magicks that you brought with you.” Savina stepped back so Nia could stand up. Nia motioned to Ridley to come to her. He walked up to her, carrying her pack on his shoulder. Ridley handed her the pack then walked back to where he was standing. She motioned for Norda to bring the altar. “Empress, I must say that the things that I brought were not magical until I arrived in your world,” She said as she reached into her pack, splaying the items over the altar. She held up one of the pink vials, “This is the blood of a man. A man named Darrien Fawkes. He has an ability that many of you would only hope to acquire.” She held up one of the red vials, “This is the blood of another man. A young man by the name of Maxwell Evans, another man with abilities beyond a mage’s comprehension.” That’s when a strange music started playing through out the room. Legolas walked in hold a boombox. She smiled, took a deep breath, then used magic to change her clothes. When she came out of the magic whirlwind, she was wearing the outfit an Amazon. “Sorry for the interruption, Empress.” It was Eve and a few amazons. “Who are you?” Savina looked outraged. “My name is Eve, Empress. Eve of the Elijans.” This behavior was strange even for Eve. “What is the meaning of the interruption, Eve?” Nia wondered, walking over to the tall brunette. “Show them, Nia, show them what else you can do.” Eve and Nia did a kind of squaring off circle. “What is she talking about, Nia?” “I’m sorry, Empress. But there is a lot more to me than what I have already told you and shown you. My world is very different from yours. What Eve wants me to do, Empress, is prove it. I haven’t done this in years, but I shall try. I’m talking about dancing, that is.” Eve and the other warriors stepped back. Some Amazonian dancers entered and Ridley moved the altar. Nia motioned to Legolas to start the music. That’s when Justin’s ‘Like I love you’ started. She even sang to it. She danced like her and the Amazon extras on the set did when she would go there for lessons. She saw that Savina and Norda were nodding their heads to the music. She smiled when she saw Ridley talking to Legolas. No doubt Legolas was blabbing a lot of her secrets. She ran the event of the previous night in her head, and then the events that happened that morning. That’s also when the music changed. Eve stepped forward with two swords; she tossed one to Nia. Nia caught the sword, swung it around a few times and then commenced with her little demonstration. They fought; a thing that Nia didn’t know she could do. Every one of the moves that Eve used, the ones she used when she was Livia, Nia was able to avoid. The way she fought was amazing; just like the way that Thimescura fought. The song ended and so did Eve’s little test. That’s when everyone started clapping for her, a standing ovation. The Empress needed no more proof of her, but Nia did insist on finishing her little presentation of her magicks. She carefully picked up one of the blue vials; “This little vial contains one of the most undoubtedly powerful healing potions in existence. It can heal anything.” “But what does it contain?” Savina’s question brought a very interesting point. “It contains the tears of a phoenix. The most powerful healer of all.” That was all that the counsel of mages needed. They were all very impressed with her. The counsel ended; Legolas, Eve, and all the amazons that came with her left. Nia went to her room alone, all of her things packed. That’s when she felt weird; so she closed her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she was back in her apartment. She reached up and felt the top of her head. The tiara was still there. She heard light footsteps. Her roommate, Rhiannon, entered the room. “You’ve been sitting there like that for hours.” Nia had a questioning look on her face. “I have?” “Yeah. Nice tiara.” “Thanks. How long ago did you get back?” “A little bit after you did.” “Oh.” She rose from her seated position, wobbly. “Ree?” “Yeah, Nia?” “What would you say if I told you that I have met someone?” “Is it a man?” Nia could tell that Ree was joking. “Yes, silly. His name is Ridley. Like the D & D character.” “Oh. Is he hot?” “Oh, yeah.” (To be continued in the next chapter: Rhiannon returns to Izmer with Nia.) Nia's Jump into D & D Ch. 04 Nia sat down on the couch, with Rhiannon plopping herself down next to her. “So, Nia, tell me what happened in your little trance.” Rhiannon put her arm around Nia, resting Nia’s head on her shoulder. “Rhee, I think that I have finally found someone. But you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” Nia almost sobbed. “Nia, honey, who is it that has you so ripped up like this?” Rhee nudged her to sit up. “Rhee, it’s Ridley. If I go back, I want you to go with me. I think I may know of a way to get back there without the trance.” She sat back up so Rhee would stop elbowing her. “Honey, that job has you to stressed.” Rhee thought that Nia was nuts. “I’m not crazy. If you don’t believe me, then fine. I’ll just go back alone. I won’t need you to go with me. I just thought that you might like to get out of here for a while, possibly get some. But see if I help you get a guy anymore. I’m sick of it when you berate me like that.” Nia was pissed off; Rhee could tell. But Nia wasn’t about to take her roommate’s criticism like that. She just got off the couch, went to her room and slammed the door. Rhee came trotting after her, knocking on her door. “Nia, honey, it’s not that I think you’re crazy, because I don’t. It’s just that…well, it’s kinda hard to believe.” Rhee leaned against the wall by her door. “Rhee, I really love him.” “I can tell.” “Rhee, he’s so…” “He’s so what?” “Well, he’s a good kisser.” Oops! “Hah. You kissed him. Did you guys…you know?” Busted! “If you’re asking if we slept together, no we didn’t. You’d be able to tell if we did. I’d be acting a hell of a lot different than this.” “Honey, open the door.” Nia didn’t answer. Rhee turned the knob. ‘That’s funny. She never leaves her door unlocked.’ Rhee thought. She stepped inside Nia’s room, the scent of pizza and perfume tickling her nose. She called out Nia’s name, Nia answering back from the closet. Nia had a full-length body mirror in there. What the duo didn’t know is that it is the portal to Ridley’s world. Nia opened the closet, moving a lot of the clothes out of the way. Rhee stepped into the full closet, not believing what she was seeing in the mirror. In the mirror were Ridley, Norda, and Empress Savina. Savina pointed to Rhee. “Who is that, Nia?” “That is Rhiannon, Empress.” She looked over her shoulder at Rhee, then back at the mirror. “When are you coming back, Nia?” Ridley put his hand against the mirror. “I don’t know, Ridley.” Nia put her hand against the mirror where his hand was. That’s when a surprise hit. Ridley linked hands with Nia through the mirror. Nia could see the smile on Ridley’s face as he stepped through the mirror. He pulled her into his embrace. “Don’t ever disappear on me like that again.” He was scolding her. “I won’t, Ridley, not if I can help it.” She just hugged him. “Get a room, you two.” Rhee was being sarcastic again. “Rhee, shut up.” Nia snapped at Rhee. “Will you come back with me?” Ridley stepped back. “Yes, Ridley, I will go back.” “But what about me, Nia?” “You too, Rhee, you too.” Ridley stepped back through the mirror, and they waited for Nia and Rhiannon to pack. Nia and Rhiannon prepared themselves for stepping through the mirror. Then they stepped through. Rhiannon couldn’t believe what she was seeing, such a beautiful place. Ridley, Savina, and Norda were there to greet them. Nia dropped her pack on a bench, preparing herself for Ridley’s embrace. It was warm and gentle like before, but also filled with longing. Savina greeted Rhiannon with open arms, though Rhee was still a little shocked that she was actually there. They spent the rest of the day talking, but Ridley and Nia snuck away from the group. To be alone. He took her to the spot where they first kissed. “Do you remember?” He stood behind her with his arms around her waist. “Remember what?” She turned around in his embrace. “The kiss.” “How could I forget that?” They separated when she saw Norda, Savina, and Rhiannon riding up. “Empress?” She held Savina’s horse still as the Empress dismounted. “I just wanted to see the view from here.” Savina pointed to Izmer. The group stared at the castle in the distance. TO BE CONTINUED… (CH. 5: THE FIRST TIME.)
