Kylie sighed as she applied her mascara. "Three more minutes and I'll be ready Paul," Kylie called back. "I have an important meeting Kylie," Paul reminded her before drinking the rest of his orange juice. "So go on without me, it isn't like I don't have a car of my own," Kylie told him as she turned on the water to wash her hands. "I'm meeting with important people that work on energy conservation and conservation of natural resources as a representative from the Governor's office, how would it look if my fiance and I took two different cars instead of carpooling?" Paul asked. "Like we have to different schedules and carpooling doesn't always work," Kylie said, sitting down on the couch and putting on her heels. "I'm leaving in thirty seconds," he threatened, walking out to the car. The door closed with a slam and Kylie let out a shriek of frustration. Kylie grabbed a carton of yogurt and small carton orange juice from the fridge, her bagel from the toaster and hurried out the door just as Paul started backing out of the driveway. He stopped, waited for her to lock the door and jog to the car. He smiled as she slammed the door behind her and buckled her seat belt before flying out of the driveway. "Holy shit girl, you look pissed," Carrie commented as Kylie sank into her chair. Kylie sighed and gave a small smile. The two girls were assistants to one of the senators and thankfully worked in the same office. "Paul is meeting with some important officials about that energy conservation plan and conservation of natural resources plan he was boring us with over dinner last week and didn't want us to take two cars," Kylie said, carefully setting her breakfast on her desk. "Oh brother. He got pissy this morning, didn't he?" Carrie asked. "Yeah, like he's having a menstrual," Kylie joked. Carrie laughed. "Why haven't you dumped him girl? He creeps me out," Carrie murmured. Kylie closed her eyes with a sigh as she pulled off the top of her yogurt. "He's not a creep Carrie, he just comes off as strong," Kylie defended her fiancee. She ate a spoonful of yogurt. "If you say so," Carrie said. "Ladies, you're paid to work, not to gossip," the senator warned. "Sorry Senator Bernstein," Kylie murmured. Carrie rolled her eyes and went back to her typing. "Looks like I'm eating alone tonight," Kylie sighed, looking at the note that had been placed on her desk while she and Carrie had been at lunch. "Come have dinner with Ty and I," Carrie suggested. "I don't want to be a third wheel," Kylie commented. "You won't be. We haven't spent any time with you lately and we miss you," Carrie murmured. "What time?" Kylie asked. "After work," Carrie answered with a triumphant grin. Kylie shook her head but grinned. "I'll have to ride with you," Kylie warned. "Good," Carrie said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Oh my God, what am I doing?" he wondered. His heart was pounding and his hands were sweaty. He hadn't been home in five years and was only home now because he was convinced that his love was in mortal danger. The same danger that had nearly killed her and had succeeded in killing their unborn child a half decade before. His hair was a little longer than it had been at graduation, and his eyes had lost their enthusiasm. He had succeeded in one of his dreams and had become a doctor. His professors compared him to Doogie Houser but what else could you expect of someone with an IQ of one hundred twenty-five? He came to a stop outside the bakery that he had worked at through high school; the job that had given him the means to take Kylie on dates and purchase the ring he had given her. Did she still wear it? Did she still love him or had she moved on? It was killing him that he hadn't been there, that he'd left when she needed him, when he needed her. Her life was more important to him than his need. He just prayed she understood. William sighed, shook his head and walked into the bakery. He was recognized instantly. "William, is that you?" the owner asked. His nod had a wide grin forming on the face of his former boss. "Where have you been and how have you been?" she asked, coming out from around the counter. "I've been in Chicago, going to college and medical school," he answered. "Why did you walk out on that girl of yours?" William sighed, he knew that question was going to come up ... a lot. "I left to protect Kylie," William answered. "Please Connie, not now," he pleaded as she opened her mouth to ask him another question. Connie studied him closely and sighed. "You look like you've lost some weight Will," Connie observed. "Fifty pounds," William admitted. "Too much." She walked back around the counter and pulled out a large cupcake and pulled a carton of milk from the cooler before walking back to the table William had sat down at. She placed the food in front of him. "Eat," she commanded, looking up as a customer walked in. William waited for the customer to leave before asking, "Is Kylie okay? Is she seeing anyone?" Connie sighed, sat down in front of him and took his hand in hers. "Will, she's engaged. Due to marry after the first of the year," Connie said gently. William closed the eyes and managed not to let his cry of pain leave his body; he felt like he had been struck by lightening. "She met him about two years ago. He's well off and treats her okay, I guess. She's never said anything about him mistreating her. I'm making the cake," Connie murmured. "I'm sorry Will," she added, patting his hand as another customer walked in. William nodded numbly, slapped a five on the table and walked out, his eyes gleaming with unshed tears. "So when are you guys finally tying the knot?" Kylie asked, dipping a piece of french bread in some flavored olive oil and popping it into her mouth. "When and if we ever hear from Will," Tyler answered. Carrie elbowed Tyler roughly and Kylie pushed her plate away. "Sorry," he murmured, shoving a huge forkful of salad into his mouth. "You shouldn't wait for him to get married if you love each other," Kylie said softly. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it again when Carrie shot him a dirty look. "Sorry Lee, but he's my best friend and I want him at my wedding," Tyler murmured. Kylie gave a small smile to soften the angry look that she knew Carrie was giving him. "It's okay Ty, I understand. Just don't expect me to be there," Kylie told him. "I won't get married without my best friend either," Carrie protested. "Guys, just go to Vegas," Kylie joked. Carrie and Tyler looked at each other and grinned. They finished their meal in between small talk and finally, Kylie stood up. "I have to get home, I have a ton of homework left to finish," she murmured. "Let me drive you," Tyler said. "No Ty, it's okay, I'd rather walk," Kylie said. He opened his mouth to protest, but Kylie was out the door. "Kylie?" She turned around, pulling her purse closer. She reached into the purse and felt for her pepper spray. She sighed in relief when she recognized William walking towards her before anger overtook her. "Where the fuck did you go?!" she shouted. He sighed and stepped up to her. "Answer me William!" she snapped. "Chicago then California," William admitted. "I missed you," he murmured, wrapping his arms around her. She allowed him a brief hug before pulling away, her eyes flashing angrily. "I needed you." "I know Lee and I'm sorry," William said softly. "I left to protect you," he added. "Protect me from what?" she snapped. He opened his mouth to answer but closed it again. "I love you," William said. "You love me? Do you even know what love means William?" Kylie asked. "Lee," William reached for her again but she pulled away. "Don't touch me William!" she shouted. "Lee," he moaned, his eyes filled with pain. "I mean it William!" she snapped. "Please forgive me," he whispered. She shook her head and hoped the tears in her eyes didn't show. "I can't," she said before turning and walking away. As he watched the love of his life walk away, he let his anger and frustration grow within him until his whole body was shaking with fury. Had anyone passed by him, they would have assumed he was ill; the power flowed from within him and the earth began to shake. A few miles away, a large tornado roared towards the unsuspecting town. He stood there in the raging winds, his arms spread wide, the wind whipped around him; lightening shot from his fingertips and his eyes flashed. As the tornado rumbled towards the town, eating everything in its path, William closed his eyes, remembered why he had left against and his fury intensified. Nothing could stop his rage, not now that Kylie was engaged to someone else. He knew she hated him, he didn't blame her for it, he blamed him. He opened his eyes as he heard young children screaming and crying for their mothers. He could feel the fear all around him and as he looked up, his eyes widened. A young girl, no more than three had been thrown from her mother's arms as she ran with her children to the storm cellar. The girl was screaming, frantic. She tried to stand up, to get back to her mother but the winds of the storm proved to be too much for her little frame. He willed himself to calm down and he watched, a sad smile on his face as the storm began to lose momentum and faded away into the night. He took a calming breath before running towards the little girl. "God help me," he thought, praying his anger hadn't injured the child too badly. "Are you okay?" he asked the girl gently. He crouched to her level and quickly ran his hands around the girl's head, arms and legs. "Get away from my daughter!" an angry woman exclaimed from behind him. "Ma'am, I'm a doctor," William told her, turning around. "Do you have proof? You're too young," the woman inquired, surprised at how young he appeared. "I'm like Doogie Houser," William said dryly, reaching into his backpack for the miniature diploma; he never went anywhere important without it. She studied it quickly and handed it back to him. "What's wrong with my girl?" she asked. "It looks like a concussion, a sprained wrist and maybe a sprained ankle. I'm not used to working with kids," he answered. He brushed away some tears on the toddler's face and gave her a kind smile. "You're going to be okay sweetie," he murmured. The girl sniffled and looked at him, unsure. William made a funny face and she giggled. He carefully lifted her off of the pavement and into the arms of the girl's father who had joined his wife while his older children waited in their yard, wide eyed. "Take her to the nearest emergency room and have her looked at, but she should be okay," he told the girl's father. He nodded and carried his little girl to the family mini van. "That storm was pretty weird. It isn't even tornado season anymore," the woman commented. William closed his eyes and held back a sigh; he knew that when he used this power that people couldn't really see him. They could see an outline that someone was there, but not enough to tell who. "Yeah, weird," William agreed as he watched the woman walk away. "What were you thinking?" he growled to himself as he walked down the street, hoping to clear his head. He hadn't lost that much control over his emotions since he had first discovered the power nearly three years ago. He moved around a lot once he had finished medical school, the words of his abductor still rang in his ears, even to this day. He had promised to be watching William to help him develop this new power and in exchange for William giving this masked man unfetted access to his power, the man wouldn't kill Kylie. Somehow, William had manged to give this guy the slip and hadn't been detected; if he had, he wouldn't have been back in town. CHAPTER FOUR "Why the hell did you leave her like that!?" William looked up to see Carrie and Tyler standing in front of him. "How'd you know I was back?" he asked. "Kylie called me when she got home last night and said you confronted her about a block away from where she lives," Carrie answered, crossing her arms over her chest. "Is she okay?" William asked. "Is she okay?! She risked her life to save you and when the two of you are freed, Kylie's at death's door! She needed you and you bailed on her! What, did you blame her for losing the baby?" Carrie snapped. "How can I blame someone for something that they didn't even know existed?" William snapped back. "Okay, everyone chill and take a step back," Tyler said, stepping between them. "Don't give me that look Care. You know I care about you and about Kylie, but Will is my friend too and I won't have you ripping him a new one until we get some answers," he added. Carrie smirked a little when William groaned. He wasn't surprised, but he was hoping his friend would go a little easy on him ... for old time's sake. Tyler turned to his friend. "You have thirty seconds to tell us why you left Kylie like that or I'll personally rip your dick off and shove it down your throat," Tyler threatened. William blanched and even Carrie looked put off by his threat, but it did the trick and everything William had been bottling up inside for the past five years came pouring out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I talked to Will this morning," Carrie said softly. Kylie slammed her book down on the table and rubbed her temples with the tips of her fingers. "Rough night?" Carrie asked. "Yeah. Paul didn't come home at all, he still wasn't there when I left this afternoon to go for my run," Kylie murmured. "Why'd you wait so late?" Carrie asked. "Because I was hung over," Kylie retorted with a groan. She lowered her head to the table and covered her head with her arms. "He told Ty and I why he left and it isn't for reasons you think," Carrie murmured. "Tell me," Kylie mumbled, turning her head to look at her friend. When Carrie finished telling her what William had told her, Kylie shook her head in disbelief then groaned and closed her eyes. "You probably shouldn't move your head with a hang over," Tyler advised from the doorway. Kylie's head shot up off of the table, causing her body to sway slightly. Tyler chuckled. "Your equilibrium will be playing catch up for awhile," he told her. Kylie's eyes widened as William walked in behind his friend, a look of concern mixed with pain distorted his features. Before anything could be said, he walked over and knelt down in front of Kylie, placed a hand on either side of her head and pulled the hangover headache from her. "Thanks," she murmured. He smiled, kissed her cheek and stood up. "Is it true?" she asked softly. Not knowing what else to say, he nodded. "Have you figured out your new power?" Tyler asked. "Yes," William answered. "What is it?" Kylie and Carrie asked together. William and Tyler began to chuckle. "What is this, high school?" Tyler joked. Before anything else could be said, someone knocked on the door before opening it and walking inside. "I thought I'd find you here," Paul said with a smile. "Hey," Kylie murmured. "Where were you all night?" she asked. Carrie and Tyler exchanged looks. "Our meeting ran very late; didn't end till almost midnight and I was too tired to drive so I just got a room at the hotel," he answered. "You could have called," Carrie said from her place against the wall. "Butt out," Paul snapped. "She's right Paul," Kylie murmured. "If I wanted a hall monitor or a mother, I would have pulled an Oedipus Rex," Paul snapped. "Speaking of ..." he turned towards Kylie and stared at her intently. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and simply shook her head. "I have to go into the office today for a bit and then I'll be golfing with the gov. I'll be home by seven," Paul told her before he walked out. "What was that all about?" Carrie asked. Kylie rolled her eyes and ran her fingers through her hair. "Paul wants to have kids right away," Kylie answered. "I thought you said that you would never ... oompfh!" Tyler was cut off as Carrie's elbow made contact with his abdomen. "What Paul doesn't know won't hurt him," Kylie said, holding up a packet of birth control pills. William willed himself to stay calm and not grow angry at the thought of the woman he loved having sex with another man. "So that's the fiancee that Connie told me about," William mused. "Yeah, Paul the creep," Carrie joked. "Stop," Kylie groaned. Tyler laughed. "He isn't that bad," he said diplomatically. "Ty, they aren't even married yet and he wants to knock her up? What's with that?" Carrie asked. "Carrie, just stop please! You can't compare every guy I've ever dated in the past five years to William, it just isn't fair to them," Kylie said. William shook his head. "I have to go guys, I still owe my body four miles," she groaned. William opened his mouth to speak. "Do not follow me," she warned before grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge and jogging out the door. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Who was that guy with you, Carrie and Ty?" Paul wanted to know. "Billy," Kylie answered hesitantly. "As in your old boyfriend?" Paul asked. Kylie nodded. "What did he want?" Paul wanted to know. "To talk," Kylie answered. "He's a loser if he couldn't see what a catch you are," Paul said. Kylie smiled and looked away. He reached for her, pulled her to him and kissed her hard on the mouth. "You're going to be late for work," Kylie murmured, moaning softly. "I have the morning off," he told her. He pushed his tongue into her mouth and frowned when she pulled away. "What's wrong?" "I have to use the bathroom," she murmured. Paul sighed but let her go. Kylie walked into the bathroom, closed and locked the door behind her. She opened her make up case and rummaged around in it, pulled out a small case, opened it and pulled out a small piece of latex. She jumped when Paul knocked on the door. "Just a second," she told him. She pulled her clothes off, used the toilet then slipped the diaphragm up inside her. "I love you Paul, but I don't want children," she thought. She washed her hands and walked into the bedroom. Paul smiled when he saw she had pulled her clothing off on her way in. "Lay down," Paul instructed. Kylie suppressed a sigh as she laid on the bed. "On your hands and knees Kylie," he reminded her. Kylie rolled her eyes and sighed a little as she did as she was told. Paul positioned himself behind her and thrust into her hard and fast. She winced as he thrust in and out of her; he reached a hand around to cup her breast and gave it a gentle squeeze. He seemed to be off in his own world as he thrust into her, grunting softly. Kylie sighed as his seed shot into her and Paul pulled away. "Thanks babe," Paul said, smacking her butt lightly before he headed for the bathroom to shower. Kylie dropped to the bed and lay there quietly until she heard him leave then she got up and took her own shower. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -2 weeks later- "It's about time those two get married," Paul said as he and Kylie walked into the hall. Kylie smiled, nodded but said nothing. As they walked up to Ty and Carrie, Kylie noticed William standing against the wall watching them. "Hey," William said to Kylie. "Hi," Kylie murmured. William and Paul eyed each other curiously. "Will, this is my fiance Paul, Paul, this is Will," Kylie introduced. "The Ex-boyfriend," Paul said with a nod. "Fiancee," William corrected. Paul looked at Kylie with slightly narrowed eyes. "For all of three months," Kylie reminded him. Paul smiled and reached for Kylie's hand. "Well, your loss is my gain," Paul told William. Kylie dropped her gaze to the floor when she saw the dark look in William's eyes. Fighting Back for Love Ch. 03-04 "They're ready," Ty's sister Emmaline said, walking over to give Kylie and William each a hug. Kylie and William glanced at each other and smiled, genuine smiles; both equally happy for their friends. The ceremony went off without a hitch and Kylie groaned inwardly when she realized Carrie had put William at the same table as her and Paul. Kylie laughed when she saw the food that Carrie had picked; four cheese lasagna with garlic bread and salad. "What am I supposed to eat?" Paul whined. "The salad," Kylie answered. Paul looked at the salad with a sneer as the waiter placed it in front of him. "Do you have any dressing without dairy products?" Paul asked him. "I'm sorry sir, we only have ranch, blue cheese and zesty Italian and the Italian has romano cheese in it," the waiter answered. "What's the big deal?" William asked, smothering his salad in ranch dressing. "I'm lactose intolerant," Paul snapped. William glanced at Kylie and noticed that she seemed more amused than angry at Carrie's thoughtlessness. "The little bitch," Paul mumbled. "Paul, Carrie is my best friend," Kylie admonished. "What's the problem?" Tyler asked, walking over to the table. "Do you have a non-dairy meal?" Paul asked Tyler. "We ordered you a chicken with broccoli," Tyler confirmed. He flagged down a waiter. "There should be a lemon chicken dish with broccoli in the back somewhere that is marked dairy free, would you get it please?" Tyler asked the waiter. The waiter nodded and walked away. "I'm sorry sir, I just checked and spoke with the caterer. That dish was dropped in the parking lot when the trays were carried in," he told Tyler. Tyler turned to Paul and gave him an apologetic smile. "Sorry man," he muttered, his eyes met Carrie's. "Excuse me," he added, hurrying over to his new wife. William and Kylie glanced at each other and grinned when Carrie shrieked. "Five bucks says he takes her into the coat closet and fucks her brains out," William told Kylie. "Make it fifty and that he takes her just behind that wall over there," Kylie said. William laughed loudly. "You're on," he agreed. "You shouldn't gamble, you work for a Senator," Paul chastised. "I'm not breaking the law," Kylie reminded him, rolling her eyes. William grinned and took a large bite of salad. "Hi Connie, what's going on?" Kylie asked as the woman approached the table carefully. "Have you seen Carrie or Tyler? I can't find them and it's time to bring out the cake," Connie said. Kylie and William both looked around before glancing at each other. "I'll check the coat room," William said. "I'll check behind the wall," Kylie added. They both got up and walked towards their intended targets. Kylie grinned. "They're over here Will," she called. "Damn it Kylie!" Tyler hissed. Kylie turned around and had to bite her lip to keep from laughing, her cheeks tinted with a pink. "Are you decent?" she asked after a minute. "Unfortunately," Tyler groaned. "Connie's looking for you, it's time for the cake," she told her friends before walking away. She walked up to William with a triumphant grin on her face. "You owe me fifty bucks," she told him, holding her hand out. He grinned and slapped a fifty dollar bill into her hand. "I'm ready to go," Paul told Kylie, twenty minutes later. Kylie sighed. "I'm not. Go on, I'll see you later," Kylie said. "You're coming home with me Kylie," Paul insisted. "Let her stay Paul, we'll make sure she gets home safely," Carrie said, joining her friend. "Fine. If you aren't home by morning, there will be hell to pay," he threatened. "Don't you even think about threatening her," Tyler growled. "Stop, it's fine, he won't do anything to me," Kylie said. She watched as Paul walked away from her, completely unsure of what was happening in her life. "Wanna dance?" William asked from behind her as one of her favorite songs blasted through the speakers. Kylie turned around and gave a small smile. "I'm still angry with you," she reminded him. "So? This is Carrie and Ty's day, let's call a truce for today," William murmured. Kylie smiled and nodded. "Dance with me?" "Sure," Kylie heard herself tell him as he led her to the dance floor. ~~~~~~~~~ "Kylie, you're drunk," William accused. "So are you," she tossed back. "C'mon, let me walk you home," William said. "Why don't we go somewhere and talk?" Kylie suggested. "Lee, now wouldn't be a good time," William protested. "Sure it would," Kylie said. He sighed as he recognized the look in her eyes. "All right. C'mon," William agreed. He led her to the efficiency apartment he had rented. Kylie looked around the room, surprised that he would choose such a small living space. He sat down on the only available comfortable surface; his bed. She sat down next to him. "Why did you really leave me?" Kylie asked. William sighed. "Do you remember the guy that kidnapped me?" William asked her. Kylie nodded, closed her eyes. How could she forget? He had made her feel so weak, drained her, killed their child and nearly killed her. "He told me that I had a power that I hadn't discovered yet, and that it would make an incredible weapon. He told me that if I did not agree to walk away from you forever, that he would kill you. He said that he would be watching me, when the power showed signs of surfacing, he would take me in and train me; teach me to use my power; to serve him," William answered. "I don't believe you," she whispered. William sighed. "I can't project my thoughts into your head, but I can show you my new power," William told her. Kylie sat on the bed, indian style and waited. William took a deep breath and concentrated. "I don't see ..." her words cut off with a gasp as she saw a dark gray cloud form in the middle of the room, rain and snow falling from it. "Oh my God!" William blinked and the cloud and snow disappeared. "I couldn't let him kill you. I didn't want to leave you Lee, please believe me," William whispered. She could hear the anguish in his voice, saw the pain in his eyes. "It nearly killed me to walk away from you like that," he added. Kylie reached for his hand and squeezed it gently. "I love you Lee." Kylie held her breath as he lowered his lips to her and kissed her gently. He maintained eye contact as he unzipped her dress, slid it down her and dropped it gently onto the floor beside the bed. She moaned when he closed his mouth around her nipple and sucked gently. She whimpered when he pulled away; he grinned and pulled his clothes off quickly, dropping his suit with her dress. Her hips lifted off the bed when he slid two fingers deep inside her. He grinned and kissed her hungrily. "Billy," she whispered. He nibbled her neck as he thrust into her, filling her with one stoke. She moaned loudly and met him thrust for thrust. He held her tightly, felt her tremble beneath him. He slowed the pace and stopped moving within her. She looked at him, breathing hard, her eyes wide and filled with passion. "Please," she whimpered. He grinned, thrust in her hard and deep, hitting her g-spot. Kylie screamed as her orgasm hit her, pleasure and pain mingled. William grinned, despite the sound of her scream hurting his ears. He groaned as he felt her clamp down on him and thrust once more before he lost it; his seed spewed deeply into her. Kylie tried to regulate her breathing as he wrapped his arms around her, rolling to his side. She closed her eyes, confused about what she felt and why. A troubled sleep claimed her. William pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead before he drifted off. "Where am I?" Kylie asked groggily. William groaned at sat up. "It's only midnight, go back to sleep," he told her. "I have to go!" Kylie exclaimed, jumping out of bed and pulling her clothes back on. "Stay," William pleaded. "I can't," Kylie insisted, grabbing her purse and running out the door. ~~~~~~~~ "Where were you? I called Carrie, much to Ty's displeasure, he said the party ended a few hours ago," Paul said as Kylie walked into their apartment. "I know, I'm sorry. A bunch of us got together after the reception for a few drinks," Kylie murmured. "It's okay, I'm just glad you're safe," Paul told her. "Let's go to bed."
