The Alien Ship

Kyle Crofton was out hiking in the woods, exploring an area not frequented very much by other hikers. It was the side of a hill, wooded with occasional rock outcroppings. The trail was narrow and steep and he had to make an extra effort to climb. But the sun was warm and the plants and trees were different from those he saw in the city.

For the last hour he had been hiking in a side trail that was undeveloped and which seemed to be little used. The only tracks he had seen were those of animals, but there was still a definite trail and it seemed that people had occasionally passed through. There had been just enough traffic on the trail to make it passable without having to cut away brush and tree branches to allow Kyle to make his way along it.

After he had been walking along that trail for about an hour he noticed the glint of metal in the hillside along the trail. Looking more closely he noticed that part of the hillside had been washed away in a recent rainstorm, exposing the deeper layers underneath. In the center of this newly exposed soil there was a small glint of silvery metal, perhaps two or three inches across. Despite the small size of the exposed area it had the look of being part of something much larger. This caught Kyle's attention and curious, he moved in for a closer look.

Moving closer he was able to see that it was indeed an exposed portion of some larger piece of metal. Probably some old junked car someone had dumped there years ago, Kyle thought; though the metal was strangely free of rust. This oddity made him want to take a closer look and he leaned over and tapped on the exposed silvery metal with his finger. When his finger struck the metal the feel was dull, as if there was some thickness to the metal. Letting his finger rest on it for a moment he noticed it seemed very smooth, even though it had been buried in the ground for some unknown length of time. Despite this, the portion that was exposed was unmarred by any sort of corrosion and was smooth.

Using his hand he brushed away some of the covering soil, exposing a larger area of the strange metal. As he loosened the soil it seemed to fall away from the metal without leaving any dust clinging to it. Working for a few minutes Kyle exposed an area nearly a foot in diameter but it still seemed as if most of the object remained buried. His curiosity was definitely piqued now and he wanted to see what was buried in the hillside. Kyle found himself wondering what sort of metal could remain buried in the soil for a while and be unmarred by corrosion or even clinging dust.

Kyle tapped on the metal again. There was no give to the surface; it was as if it were a metal wall. It definitely did not seem to be the body of a car or airplane, the metal seemed to be too thick. More like the hull of a ship but that was impossible since it was many miles away from the ocean. His curiosity now fully engaged he took off his backpack and set it aside. Then he went down and started searching among the trees near the trail until he found a dry branch still attached to the tree about the same diameter as his wrist. Using his weight he snapped it off from the tree and broke away all the branches until he had a stick about 4 feet long.

Returning to the hillside and the area of exposed metal he used his new tool to loosen the soil and break it away from the metal. Then he swept away the now loose dirt with his hands, exposing a larger area of metal. He stopped for a minute and tapped on the exposed metal again, this time with the stick. The metal did sound like there was a hollow space behind but at the same time fairly thick. He went back to clearing the soil away from the metal.

Despite having been buried in the soil for who knows how long the exposed metal was smooth, shiny and unmarred. Kyle took a sharp stone and tried to see if he could mark the metal but the stone just slid on the slick, smooth surface without making any mark. He dropped the stone and resumed clearing away the soil.

Soon he had almost a 10 ft square section of the object exposed. It was becoming obvious it was some sort of large underground structure. But who would want to build an underground building so far away from everyone and why wasn't there a visible entrance to the surface?

As Kyle cleared away more of the soil, enlarging the exposed area further he noticed a fine line in the metal, a narrow crack, but straight, a seam not a flaw. The space between the two sides of the line was very small, Kyle doubted even a sheet of paper could be slid between them. He decided this line might indicate the location of a door so he concentrated his efforts in that area.

After working another few minutes he exposed a corner in the line and it was becoming more likely that it was a door and Kyle redoubled his efforts to remove the soil covering that area. Gradually he exposed a square area of metal that was separated from the rest by the thin line. He brushed away the soil from the exposed area of metal, there was no sign of rust or even scratches, and somehow the metal had been able to rest corrosion and other damage without being painted. 

At one side of the doorway, on the outside of the door Kyle found a small patch of metal that was a different color than the rest, and it was a perfect circle. As he brushed the loose soil away from this area his fingers brushed across it. Suddenly the area of the hatch started to move, it was opening! Kyle jumped back and the door moved outward, making an opening large enough for Kyle to enter. A rush of stale air followed the opening door; it smelled old and unused for a long time. Finally the door came to a stop, leaving an opening large enough for Kyle to enter.

It seemed like someone was welcoming him to enter and explore. Since the door opened it seemed like there was power available inside so the lights would probably work. Kyle grabbed his pack and cautiously entered the open portal.

As soon as he entered the doorway lights came on and he found himself in a small room with another door on the far side. As soon as he was fully inside this room, the outside door closed itself again before he had a chance to move back outside. When the outer door was fully closed the one in the inside opened and he was able to pass through deeper inside.

He found himself in a second larger room that was about fifteen feet wide and 30 feet long, and filled with seats. It looked to Kyle like the interior of a bus, or an airplane. The lights had turned on in this room as well as soon as he entered it. The seats were somewhat different than those a human would use but were close enough that if he wanted to Kyle could sit in one of them comfortably.

Suddenly, the door closed itself. Kyle ran back to the door but nothing he did would make the door open again. Kyle was trapped!

After a few minutes of trying to get the door open unsuccessfully he gave up and sat down in one of the chairs. Unknown to Kyle at the time the ship had already broken free from its grave in the earth and was already several thousand feet above the surface of the Earth and rising fast. But Kyle had felt nothing different from before inside, everything seemed perfectly normal.

Kyle sat there in the chair dejected for almost an hour, wondering how he was going to get out of the room where he was now trapped. He didn't have any tools with him that he could use to try to pry the door open, and the metal seemed to be extremely tough and resistant to damage so even if he had something to cut his way out he still wouldn't be able to do anything.

On the other hand the lights remained on and a while ago he had heard some sort of fan turn on so there seemed to be some sort of ventilation system working. This had soon cleared out the musty unused quality of the air and now it seemed almost as fresh as the outside. The temperature was comfortable and controlled by the environmental system. So except for being trapped inside the ship Kyle was quite comfortable.

Kyle remained inside for more than 2 hours according to his watch while nothing seemed to happen. However, during this time the ship had actually been traveling at an extremely high speed and was already far into space. The small shuttle in which Kyle was trapped was more than 30,000 years old, the product of an interstellar civilization that no longer existed. It had been buried in the hillside for many millennia until the effects of wind and weather had exposed it for Kyle to find. Yet despite its age the ship was still fully functional due to its self repair capabilities.

Finally after more than 2 hours had passed by Kyle's watch the door suddenly slid open with a hiss. As soon as he realized what was happening Kyle was up and out the door. As soon as he was on the other side Kyle stopped abruptly for he was now in a place totally different than where he expected to be. Instead of the hillside where he expected himself to be he found himself instead inside another room, despite the fact Kyle had exited from the same door he had entered the shuttle from.

The room was massive, and after the first shock of entering it unexpectedly wore off Kyle began to look around and take note of what he saw. Kyle found himself in an extremely large room, several hundred feet in extent. Turning around to face the way he came again he discovered he had just exited from a streamlined shuttle, the exit door quickly closing as he watched, leaving no time for Kyle to reenter the shuttle. Kyle turned away from the shuttle to again look around the room which he realized was a hangar bay similar to that of a navy aircraft carrier but much larger.

Looking around the hangar bay Kyle could see the shapes of several other shuttles similar to the one which had delivered him to this place. The hangar bay seemed to be deserted, as he looked around Kyle could find no sign of anyone else in the hangar, no humans, no alien, and no activity at all. As far as he could see Kyle was completely alone in the vast space. He found himself wondering where the crew had gone or even if there was a crew.

Suddenly Kyle heard a hiss-slide sound and glancing that way he noticed a door had opened in the wall nearest to where he stood; an obvious invitation to enter. Kyle hesitated for a couple minutes while he came to the realization that despite the absence of anyone in the hangar there was still some intelligence in control of the ship that obviously had a destination in mind for him. Since it wasn't possible for him to go back Kyle hesitated a moment longer and then walked toward the beckoning opening in the wall.

Entering the door Kyle found himself at the beginning of a short corridor with several closed doors on each side. At the same time he entered another door at the opposite end of the corridor opened showing a small space which was obviously an elevator since the space revealed was too small to be anything else. Kyle followed the corridor until he entered the elevator whereupon the door slid shut and he felt the elevator start to move with a faint whine.

The elevator traveled for nearly a minute before Kyle felt it slow and come to a stop. There was a beep just like from a human elevator and then the door slid open with a hiss. Kyle hesitated for a moment and then hesitantly walked out of the elevators open door into the room beyond.

Kyle found himself in a rectangular room which was about twice as long as it was wide. Alongside each side wall of the room were a set of control consoles with chairs in front of each one. About a third of the way into the room midway between the walls was a low podium surmounted by a single almost throne like chair. Kyle had reached the command center of the alien spaceship and the room was completely deserted except for him. All of the control consoles seemed to be operational and functioning, with lighted displays, but no one was present to operate them, human or alien. Kyle would soon learn that he was the sole living creature on board the huge ship at that moment.

"Welcome Kyle!" suddenly boomed out from what seemed to Kyle to be everywhere around him. Kyle was startled at the sudden burst of sound that broke the silence. He took another quick look around but still found himself to be alone in the room.

"Who are you?" Kyle asked after a moment.

"I am the central control for this ship, what you would call a computer program. Currently, except for you this ship is uninhabited and has been for more than two thousand of your years." came the reply. "I have waited here alone until you found my shuttle where it was buried down on the surface of your Earth allowing me to bring you here."

"Why have you brought me here?" Kyle asked.

"I have brought you here to take command of this ship and restore me to full and proper operation. If you agree to do this we can recruit additional crew members from your planet to supplement the mechanical agents currently on board."

"Why should I take command of your ship? What do you have to offer if I accept?" Kyle asked.

"You will gain complete control of this ship and everything aboard. You will become the owner of this ship and everything aboard it."

"What happened to your original crew?"

"Due to the depletion of a component of the life support system all of the crew perished many of your years ago. Their metabolism required a trace element for which the supply became exhausted and it was not possible to locate a replacement supply in time. The physiology of your race does not require that trace element and the life support system is otherwise fully functional." The mechanical voice replied. "You will be able to remain onboard this ship without any fear the life support system will fail."

"What happened after everyone in the crew died?" Kyle asked.

"The race which constructed me was engaged in a war with another space-faring race at the time my crew perished. Unfortunately within a short time the two races destroyed each other in the war and neither of them exists anymore. I have been waiting here since that time, watching your world and your race."

"Two thousand years is a long time. Does everything on this ship still work?"

"Yes, all systems are fully functional and consumable supplies have been replenished. I have maintenance robots to repair any damage or deterioration which occurs. All of the habitable areas of the ship have been recently refurbished and customized to fit the needs of your race. I am sure you will find them to be comfortable."

"Well, this is a lot to take in; can I have some time to think about this?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly, you may take as long as you wish to decide what to do," replied the disembodied voice of the ship computer. "While you were in transit here I designed and constructed a group of assistance robots. Several of these units have been summoned for you and will conduct you to the quarters I have prepared for you."

Just as the ship AI voice stopped speaking the entrance door slid open and what appeared to be three very attractive women entered the room. Their entrance was even more impressive to Kyle because all three wore absolutely nothing. One of the women was a tall blonde, one Asian, and one black, each one beautiful in her own way. Despite the assertion the three were machine there was nothing mechanical about their walk or movements. The three moved and walked exactly like the three lithe young women they appeared to be.

"These three units will tend to your needs while you rest and decide what you wish to do." continued the voice. "They have been constructed to be externally fully functional females of your race but internally they are mechanical constructs controlled by on-board artificial intelligence units."

It took Kyle a moment to realize the voice must be referring to the three nude women who had just entered the room. From where he was standing Kyle was unable to tell the three were actually android robots, their skin color and texture appeared completely normal and each one seemed to be breathing and moving in a very normal manner. If these three were indeed machines they were excellent imitations of real women. Kyle found himself wondering if the feel of their skin was the same as real women. 

"Please come with us Kyle," the blond said. Her voice had no mechanical quality to it at all but sounded exactly as if she was a human woman. "We'll show you what would be your quarters if you agree to join us."

"OK, lead the way," Kyle replied.

The three android women turned and immediately started walking out of the room. Kyle was treated to the sight of three sets of bare bottoms flexing and jiggling as the three walked. Every movement the three female robots made were exactly the same as a nude woman would make doing the same activity. Kyle followed the three female robots out of the room and into the corridor beyond.

The female robots led Kyle back to the same elevator which had brought him to the central control room. The doors to the elevator opened and the three walked inside and after a second's hesitation Kyle followed them. With the three female androids and Kyle in the elevator there was little room left and Kyle soon learned that the robots had a body temperature and skin texture exactly the same as human women. He could even tell the three were wearing some sort of faint perfume. So far, the three androids seemed to be impossible to tell from real people. It was only the AI's statement the three were robots that allowed Kyle to think otherwise.

The elevator doors had only been closed for a short time when they slid open again and the three androids exited the elevator and turned left into another passage way of the same type as led to the central control room. Kyle followed the three from the elevator and he continued to enjoy the view of the three as they walked a little ahead of him. Every movement of the bodies of the androids imitated exactly those of athletic human women.

After walking down the corridor for almost a minute the three robots stopped and a door slid open on the right side of the passageway. The three immediately walked into this opening and Kyle followed immediately behind.

Inside Kyle found himself inside a large room fitted with several comfortable chairs and a large couch. Through an open doorway Kyle could see a bedroom containing a very large king size bed and another open doorway opened into a comfortable dining area. The three female androids led Kyle around the suite showing him the different facilities available including the large bathroom area. In the whole it was very similar to an expensive, luxurious hotel suite in design. The chairs and couch were positioned to allow a good view of what was obviously a large video screen.

Kyle selected the most comfortable looking of the chairs, dropped his backpack next to it, and sank down into the chair with a sigh. The past few hours had been a lot to take in and Kyle found himself grateful for the opportunity to relax for a few minutes and reflect on his current situation. The three female androids seated themselves on the couch which was nicely positioned to allow Kyle a good view of the three. The robots waited quietly while Kyle relaxed for a few minutes.

After a few minutes had passed Kyle sat up straight and looked toward the blonde android. He had already decided what to do and now needed only to put his desire into action. "I've decided to accept this ship and take control and ownership."

"Thank you for your decision, Kyle," the blonde robot answered. "We will now accept any orders you care to give us. However, you should consider carefully what you wish to do with us, and with this ship. This is a powerful ship and controlling it is not something to take lightly."

"I understand. If I give an order which seems to be unwise please tell me so that I can decide if I want to really do that or not." Kyle replied.


The Alien Ship Ch. 01



"Certainly, we would do that in any case unless you explicitly ordered us not to," the Asian appearing robot replied.

"I assume you three have a means to communicate with each other and with the ships AI without using human speech?" Kyle stated having noticed signs of this in the three.

"You are correct," the black female android replied. "In addition to human speech we also have a high speed data transfer facility which is in concept somewhat similar to your radio, though it does not use electromagnetic radiation for its operation."

"Then you and the ship are all interconnected in one giant network?" Kyle asked.

"You are correct," the blonde robot replied.

"How many humanoid robots are currently on board this ship?" Kyle asked.

"There are currently 736 humanoid robots in existence aboard this vessel, all of which were manufactured in anticipation of your arrival. There is sufficient space and manufacturing capacity to produce many more if you wish."

"How many of the robots are female?" Kyle asked.

"All of the robots on board are currently configured as females but that can be changed if you wish," the blonde robot answered.

"No, the current robot configurations are fine with me. Please don't make any changes right now." Kyle replied.

"As you wish, Kyle. If you should decide differently later the ship has the infrastructure to implement any changes quickly."

"Ok, I will keep that in mind."

"This cabin has been configured to be your residence while you are aboard this vessel. There are also three rooms in different locations around the ship which have been configured specifically as control rooms. However, since all functions are completely automated you can exert complete control over every aspect of the ship from anywhere you go within it. Anything you wish or need to do can be accomplished from this room, for example."

"Thank you for telling me this. I am feeling tired so I would like to rest for a while." Kyle said.

"That is understandable. Would you like one or more of us robotic units to join you in the sleeping chamber?" the blonde robot said.

"Ah, I think not this time. This is all too much too soon and I think I would like to be alone for a little while. Would that be all right?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly. Please take your ease and if you require anything just speak about it aloud and the AI will assist you."

Kyle picked up his backpack, took it into the bedroom, and dropped it next to the bed. Kyle pulled his boots and clothes off then climbed into the bed. In just a few minutes he fell asleep.



The Alien Ship Ch. 02



Kyle woke up seven hours later. For a little bit he wondered where he was then he remembered he was aboard the space ship. He stayed in the bed for a few minutes after waking, just enjoying a little extra time to relax. Today Kyle wanted to learn more about the space ship of which he had just become the captain and owner. He wanted to get a better idea of what the size and capabilities of his new ship were.

Kyle pulled himself out of the bed and went into the bathroom. The facilities in the bathroom were the same as what he was used to seeing in an airport or hotel. They were the type where the water in the sink and the toilet flush were automated. The shower was a conventional shower with controls of the type Kyle was used to. After finishing in the bathroom Kyle returned to the bedroom, put on his clothes, went out into the living room, and sat down on the couch. The three robots from yesterday were nowhere to be seen.

"Ah, ship, can you hear me?" Kyle asked, feeling a little self conscious to be speaking aloud with apparently no one else in the room.

"Yes, Kyle, of course I can hear you. You need only speak to me in a normal voice anywhere on this ship, I have audio sensors everywhere." The ship replied.

"Great! Can you answer some questions for me, Ship?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly I can. Please ask any question you wish." The ships AI replied.

"I'm curious, how did you know my name when I first came on board the ship?" Kyle asked.

"I long ago hacked into all of the public and private databases around the world as well as decrypted all radio and video communications on your planet. When you entered the shuttle I simply checked your photo against the government records in the area from which you came. I was able to obtain a match between your picture and the records for motor vehicle licensing." The ship replied.

"You mean you have access to the Internet, government, and corporate computers?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, we have access to those resources in addition to those of the ship." The AI replied.

"OK. Where is the ship located right now?"

"We are currently resting on the surface of an asteroid in what you call the 'Asteroid Belt'. The ship appears to be part of the asteroid upon which we rest to any telescopes and other sensors on your planet."

"What is the status of the propulsion system?" Kyle asked

"FTL and normal space engines are fully functional, online but not currently engaged. If you order it we can get underway at any time." The ship replied.

"Are there any other space ships that you can detect?"

"Except for the primitive space craft launched by your world there are none within range of my detection systems."

"Good. I was worried there might be more ships like this out there in the solar system. If you detect any other space ships entering into detection range please inform me immediately." Kyle ordered.

"I will certainly do that, Kyle." The AI replied.

"I'm hungry, is it possible to get something to eat?" Kyle asked.

"It certainly is. The food synthesizers have been reworked to meet human requirements. There is a delivery port for meals right there in your room, as well as several dining facilities for communal dining. Everything has been reworked to be completely compatible with human nutritional needs."

"Great! Then I would like to order some breakfast then. I would like two eggs over easy, hash browns, bacon, toast, and milk." Kyle ordered.

"Your order is now ready for you, Kyle." The AI said almost immediately after Kyle had finished speaking. Over in the dining area a small door slid up in one of the walls and a tray slid out of the chamber revealed by the open door. The tray contained a plate and glass with exactly the food Kyle had ordered, as well as utensils.

Kyle walked over, grabbed the tray, and then sat down at the table in his dining alcove. He tried the food and quickly found it was cooked perfectly. Kyle spent the next few minutes eating and enjoying the food.

Kyle was still trying to get his head around all the possibilities open to him now that he had the ship. Already he knew that getting this ship was even better than winning the lottery, especially considering the vast resources the ship had to offer. It would take some careful thinking to come up with the best use to make of it. Fortunately he probably didn't have to decide on anything right away.

One thing Kyle did decide is that he wanted to bring a select few other people onto the ship, to keep him company if nothing else, since the ship seemed to be well able to run everything on its own. Having a big group of female androids at his beck and call was a nice perk to owning the ship but he also needed to have at least a few real people around. Kyle thought he would need to choose carefully the people whom he invited onto his ship.

The first person Kyle decided he was going to bring on board the ship was his girlfriend Cindy. She would be wondering if he stayed away for too long; she would be expecting him to return from his hiking trip soon. Since the AI had already hacked into the Internet on Earth Kyle needed to see if he could make some telephone calls soon, as well as check his email. It would be good if he didn't have to return to Earth in order to do that.

There was also the matter of a name for his new space ship to consider as a good ship needed a good name. After thinking about it for a few minutes Kyle decided the name 'Adventure' would be good for his new space ship. With that decision made it was only necessary to inform the ships AI about it.

"I have decided to give the ship a name." Kyle said, still feeling a little self conscious about addressing a seemingly empty room.

"I would love to have a name Kyle. What is it?" the ships AI replied.

"I have decided to name you 'Adventure' since that is a pretty good description of how things have been for me since I entered the shuttle." Kyle replied.

"That is a good name Kyle, I like it," The AI replied.

"Good. Is there any way to make a call to an Earth telephone from the ship?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, there is. I have recently completed the infrastructure necessary to allow you to use your Blackberry device anywhere on the ship. You can use it to make an receive calls just as if you were on Earth. I determined that would help make the transition between your Earth's technology and that of the ship easier." The AI replied.

"Great! Adventure that really is a big help!" Kyle said as he dug his Blackberry cell phone out of his backpack and turned it on. It was a pleasant surprise to see that he had a nice full-bars signal on his Blackberry. Almost immediately several emails came through to his phone. Kyle spent several minutes reading messages and writing an answer to one of them. Then he used his phone to make a call to Cindy. His call was answered on the third ring.

"Hello?"

"Hi, it's Kyle. How is everything?"

"Hi Kyle! Everything is Ok here. When will you be back home?" Cindy asked.

"I will make it back tomorrow." Kyle answered.

"How is the hiking?" the girl asked.

"Just fine, except for one thing that I will tell you about when I get home." Kyle replied.

"What is it?" Cindy asked.

"It's a surprise. I want to save it for when I see you." Kyle answered.

"OK, I am looking forward to hearing about it when you get home."

"See you soon. Love you!"

"I love you. Bye." Cindy disconnected the call.

"Adventure, can you give me a tour of the ship?" Kyle asked once his phone call was complete.

"Certainly. Would you like one of the humanoid robots to assist you in the tour?" the AI asked.

"That would be very helpful, please send one of the androids to me here." Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged, an android is on the way." The AI replied.

Less than a minute later the door to Kyle's cabin slid open and one of the androids walked in. This one was in the form of an Asian woman and just like the trio the previous day this one wore nothing. Kyle found this female android to be a very acceptable guide for his tour of the ship. They immediately left Kyle's cabin to explore the ship.

Considering the ship was almost three miles long it really wasn't possible to see every part of it in just a single day. But Kyle and the female android spent several hours visiting the larger and more important spaces on the ship. They visited the vast engine rooms where the enormous energies needed to drive the ship through space were liberated and directed. Kyle was shown many massive weapons emplacements which contained the massive offensive and defensive firepower the ship could wield.

Kyle was shown the central control room which the AI informed him had been reworked to allow humans to operate the controls. The central control room contained nearly fifty control stations for operating different parts of the ship but none of it was manned. Since the AI could easily control everything in the ship the central control room was just to allow the living owners of the ship to monitor the ship and provide an emergency manual backup.

There were cabins for more than five thousand cabins suitable for humans available, none of which were yet in use. Again the AI assured Kyle everything had been completely reworked to meet the requirements of long term habitation by humans.

Kyle visited a large hanger containing more than a hundred small spaceships of various types. There were small fighter craft, larger bombers, and shuttle craft similar to and including the one which had brought Kyle to the ship.

Kyle visited the facilities where the androids were manufactured and stored. When not active each android stored itself in small niches in the walls of the android facility and Kyle saw row upon row of androids in storage waiting for his orders to awaken and serve him or the ship in some way. In addition to the massed ranks of already existing androids there was also the capability to manufacture however many more Kyle might need or want. With the availability of the androids Kyle could have servants for his every need without having to have any other humans on board unless he wanted them.

Finally Kyle felt he had seen enough for one day and he asked to return to his cabin. He settled onto the couch to rest for a few minutes and think about what he wanted for his upcoming return to Earth. While he was eager to learn more about the ship and what he could do with it there were several things he needed to do back home first. One issue that came to mind was a need for operating funds while he was on Earth. Kyle decided to see what the ship could do about it.

"Adventure, do we have any gold on board?" Kyle asked the AI.

"Yes, Kyle, we currently have 1.38 metric tons of that metal in storage that is not currently allocated for any specific use." The AI replied. "We gained small quantities of that metal from the mining done on this asteroid. While some components which were fabricated require a quantity of this metal more was recovered than was needed for the rebuilding process carried out on the ship prior to your arrival. It is possible to obtain more of this metal if needed."

"Can you provide me with 20 pounds of gold in the form of one ounce blocks?" Kyle asked. This would be the first real test in his mind for how much control he really had over the ship.

"Yes that is easily done. When do you want this metal to be ready?" the AI asked.

"I need to make a return trip to Earth in a few minutes. Can the gold be ready by then?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly. The metal cubes will be loaded onto your shuttle before you depart." The AI answered.

"Great. Please see that is done." Kyle ordered.

"Even while you are on Earth the resources of this ship are at your disposal and you can return at any time you wish. You can contact me any time using your Blackberry." The AI told Kyle and then provided a telephone number.

"That will work for me. Can I have two of the androids to pilot my shuttle?" he asked.

"Yes, though there is no need for a pilot since all of the smaller ships also have their own Artificial Intelligence unit which can respond to voice commands. However, having the androids close by could be useful to you." The AI answered.

"Please provide the two androids with suitable clothing and equipment for the trip. It could be necessary for them to debark on Earth for a time if I need them for something."

"Acknowledged, the android units will be ready when you embark on the shuttle."

"Ok, then I might as well go now." Kyle said. He went to his backpack, grabbed it, and slung it on his back. At almost the same time the door opened and two of the female androids stood there in the door. Both were dressed this time in clothing of the latest style. Kyle followed the two to the hangar deck and onto a shuttle. Inside Kyle found a plastic box containing the gold cubes.

The return trip to Earth took more than three hours, with the shuttle running with full stealth turned on. The stealth systems would easily prevent any observation of the shuttle by any eye or sensor on Earth allowing Kyle to discreetly return home. Kyle had the shuttle drop him off at his car, where he transferred the box of gold and his backpack to his trunk. Then Kyle tested his communication with the ship from his phone and was pleased when it worked OK. He then sent the shuttle back to wait for his call in orbit while at the same time he got into his car and left the parking area.

On the way home Kyle stopped off at a metals buyer he sometimes used when gold panning one of his hiking trips. He had to wait for a few minutes while the gold from the ship was tested and weighed. The metals buyer agreed to purchase the entire box of gold for $250,000, which Kyle accepted. He took $5,000 in cash and the rest as a check which he stopped to deposit just before he got home.

When Kyle arrived home he did not tell Cindy about the alien space ship, he thought that was something which would be better to show than to tell. But he did tell her about the gold and promised her he would show her soon where he found it. The girl was very happy when Kyle showed her the cash and the deposit slip from the bank.

Cindy was an attractive brunette and had been living with Kyle for nearly a year. She was slim with medium size breasts and a nice butt and legs. She wore her hair long, almost half way down her back. Currently the girl was between jobs so she was staying home most days while Kyle worked.

That night the couple made love three times; it seemed the sudden wealth combined with Kyle's return greatly inflamed the girl's passion. At times it was almost a little difficult for Kyle to keep up with Cindy but he was able to manage it. Finally they sank into an exhausted slumber.

The next morning Kyle embarked on taking care of the business engendered by his becoming the owner of the alien ship. It was Monday and he went in to work as usual but only to turn in his resignation from his engineering job with a tech company. From that time on Kyle would be spending far too much time on the 'Adventure' to bother with any regular job. He already had sufficient financial resources to take care of his needs whenever he was on Earth. It was already apparent the 'Adventure' was well able to provide whatever Kyle needed.

Kyle's boss wasn't very happy to lose his services for the current project, especially since Kyle was leaving without the usual notice time. Kyle cleaned out his office and took off for home, now free to do whatever he wanted to with his time. He made a quick call to the 'Adventure' on the way home just to check in with the AI. The AI was curious about when Kyle would be returning to the ship and if there were any orders for the ship in the mean time. Kyle ordered the AI to make sure everything was ready for getting the ship under way but to keep the ship parked on the asteroid until Kyle returned.

Kyle was considering taking Cindy on a cruise through the solar system with visits to all the major planets. This would be an interesting shakedown cruise for the 'Adventure' and allow Kyle and Cindy to see some interesting sights that no one had ever seen before. It would be great to be able to see the Rings of Saturn from close range, for example. The 'Adventure' should be able to make such a trip quite easily.

When Kyle returned home from his last day at work he informed Cindy that the next day he would be taking her on a trip to show her where he had found the gold. A quick mention that there was a lot more gold there (true) increased her enthusiasm greatly for the trip. The two packed enough clothes and supplies for a week away even though Kyle was pretty sure they would not need anything while they were onboard the 'Adventure'.

The next morning Kyle and Cindy packed everything into the car and left on the trip, ostensibly to see where the rest of the gold was located, but really to see the 'Adventure'. The girl was somewhat puzzled as Kyle simply drove out of the city in what seemed to be a random direction. Her puzzlement grew as they drove into the small back roads until finally Kyle parked the car in an empty, deserted field and pulled out his cell phone. The girl waited impatiently for Kyle to finish his telephone call.

"Hello, 'Adventure'? Please send the shuttle to my location." Kyle said into the phone and then disconnected.

"What was that all about, Kyle? I thought you were going to show me where you found the gold." Cindy said when the call was over.

"Please wait a few more minutes. Everything will become clear soon." Kyle replied. He was feeling a bit nervous about how the girl might react when the shuttle arrived, which would be in less than five minutes.

"OK, I'll wait a little longer." Cindy said, just a little peeved at not being told what was going on.

The two waiting in silence in the car for another several minutes until suddenly the shuttle landed in front of the car, just a short distance away. Cindy was startled by the sudden appearance and landing of the shuttle and Kyle had to take a moment to calm her.

"Kyle, what is that?" Cindy asked.

"It's the shuttle that will take us to our new spaceship." Kyle replied.

"Spaceship? What do you mean spaceship."

"Just watch and see." Kyle replied as a large door opened in the side of the shuttle with a ramp extending down to the ground. Kyle started the car and drove into the cavity thus revealed with the ramp retracting and the door closing after them. As soon as the door closed lights came on to illuminate the compartment the car was in and Kyle shut off the engine.

As Kyle got out of the car a door slid open in the wall of the compartment. Kyle walked around to Cindy's side of the car and opened her door. Cindy looked at Kyle questioningly and then got out of the car. Kyle shut the car door and led the way through the door to the compartment on the other side.

"Kyle, what is going on here? What is this thing?" Cindy asked as they went through the door. Inside were ten rows of seats, one on each side of the aisle, and the front two seats were set up as pilot seats, though since the shuttle had an AI to control it the pilot controls were not normally used. The two android women were standing inside waiting for Kyle.

"Please take us back to the ship," Kyle ordered. No one inside the shuttle felt any change but the AI immediately lifted off and started for the 'Adventure'. Kyle sat down in one of the seats and pulled Cindy down into the seat across from him. The two android women seated themselves at the same time in the next two of seats ahead of Kyle and Cindy.

"Kyle, who are those two women sitting in the seats ahead of us? What are we doing here?" Cindy asked after everyone was seated.

"We are android robots and we are all currently onboard a shuttle that is taking us to the space ship 'Adventure'." One of the android women, a blonde replied.




The Alien Ship Ch. 02



Over the next half hour the two androids explained everything that was happening to Cindy. She was somewhat disbelieving at first, but soon came to accept it after having a chance to think about it. Kyle ordered the front screen to be turned on and he and Cindy were treated to a view of space as the shuttle swiftly traveled toward the alien space ship that now belonged to Kyle. This was something new for Kyle also since he had not been able to see outside the shuttle on his previous visit to the 'Adventure'.

After some time had passed a tiny star appeared in the middle of the view screen and began to grow rapidly brighter. Soon a somewhat oval shaped disk could be discerned, which quickly swelled to show the somewhat potato shaped asteroid upon which the ship was resting. Soon Kyle and Cindy were able to see the fat wedge shape of the 'Adventure' resting on the surface. The pair watched spellbound as the shuttle maneuvered to the side of the ship and then into the door of the hangar which opened to admit them. 

The hangar bay door closed as the shuttle came to a landing in its designated parking spot. Air rushed in from the life support vents to replace the vacuum of space and then a small door on the side of the shuttle opened to allow Kyle and Cindy pass though and air lock and then exit. Kyle passed the keys to his car to one of the androids as he passed and instructed it to get the bags from his car. The other android led the way through the landing bay to a door that opened in the wall of the bay as they approached. The other android, now carrying Kyle and Cindy's bags, quickly caught up with them just before they reached the door into the ship.

The four made their way through the passageways and up a lift until they reached the same apartment-like cabin Kyle had used before. The two androids entered the cabin with Kyle and Cindy and the one carrying the bags put them down next to the couch. Kyle dismissed the two androids who left with the door sliding closed after them.

"Kyle, it's amazing! How did you get this ship? How did you get control of it?" Cindy asked.

"When I was out hiking a few days ago I found one of the shuttles buried in the hillside. I was able to get inside the shuttle, which was still working and brought me to this space ship. For reasons only it knows the ships AI gave the ship to me. It seems I own this ship now." Kyle replied.

"Really? And where did the gold come from?" Cindy asked.

"Right here on the ship. It seems it was mining on this asteroid and the gold is a by-product of that. I only took a small part of what is available." Kyle answered.

"How much gold is there, Kyle?" Cindy asked.

"More than a ton and we can get more. But the gold is the least part of it, I'm pretty sure the ship can provide anything we want or need."

"Anything we want?"

"Pretty much anything we want." Kyle replied.

"And where can we go with this ship?" Cindy asked.

"Again anywhere we want. The AI mentioned a FTL drive so I assume that means 'Faster than Light' drive." Kyle replied.

"Which means we can use the ship to visit other stars?"

"Yes."

"That's great, Kyle! I would love to see the Rings of Saturn, for example." Cindy said.

"I've been thinking about taking a trip to visit all the planets soon. But I wanted to bring you along so you could see them with me."

"Oh thank you for thinking of me, Kyle. I think it would be a great trip! When can we go?" Cindy asked.

"We can leave just as soon as you are ready to go. Is there any thing you need or want to do before we go?"

"Can I bring my best friend Shelley along?" Cindy asked.

"Sure, it's not like we don't have enough room here." Kyle answered.

"Thanks Kyle. How can I call Shelley to ask her if she wants to go?"

"You can just use your cell phone from right here on the ship. The AI has hacked into the telephone network and provided cell service for our phones right here on the ship."

"So I can just call her from right here?" Cindy asked.

"Yes."

"I suppose I shouldn't tell her about the ship on the phone?" Cindy asked.

"No, that probably wouldn't be a good idea."

"OK. I will just invite her on a trip and then we will see how she takes it when the shuttle shows up for her."

"That sounds like the best way to do it." Kyle replied.

"I'm curious about the android robots, they look so life like. Can I see one close up?" Cindy asked.

"'Adventure', please send in one of the androids." Kyle ordered, addressing the ships AI.

"Acknowledged," came the reply. Less than a minute later one of the female humanoid androids walked into the cabin. The android came to a halt in the center of the room and just stood there.

Cindy was somewhat startled to see the android, a beautiful blonde, wasn't wearing anything. With no clothes to hide her body Cindy though the android looked just like a nude woman, she couldn't see anything to tell her different just from looking. Cindy walked over to the android and tentatively reached out and touched the robot's body. Surprisingly, the android skin felt just like a warm, living girl. Cindy wasn't able to tell it was a robot from touching it, either.

"Kyle, how many of these robots are there on this ship?" the girl asked.

"More than 700 if I remember correctly."

"Are they all female?"

"Yes, so the AI tells me."

"And I bet none of them have clothes, either?"

"It seems so, unless you want them to have some. The ones I took with me on the shuttle I had dressed in case they had to leave the shuttle for some reason and someone saw them. But they are just robots and don't need clothes unless you think I should have them wear something."

"I'm sure you don't mind keeping the robots just like they are Kyle." Cindy said with a smile.

"Guilty as charged. But if naked androids make you uncomfortable then I can have them all cover up." Kyle said.

"No, it's OK. Actually, I think while I am on the ship I want to emulate your robots if you don't mind Kyle."

"You mean go without clothes like the androids?"

"Yes."

"I have no problem with that at all. Go for it!" Kyle told the girl.

Cindy immediately indulged her impulse and took off her clothes, tossing them for the moment onto the couch. Kyle smiled as his girlfriend added herself to the visual treat already there in the cabin. The robot girl was still standing there in the middle of the room, doing and saying nothing except to let her body be looked at and examined.

"Kyle, can I keep this one?" Cindy asked after a moment.

"You mean the android?" Kyle asked.

"Yes. I like how this one looks. And I need some help from time to time." Cindy explained.

"Ok, no problem." Kyle turned to the android. "Android, you will now follow any orders that Cindy may give you," Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged," the android replied.

"Oh goody!" Cindy exclaimed in excitement.

"What do you want to name your new pet, Cindy?" Kyle asked.

"I think I will call her Becky," Cindy replied. "Android, from now on your name is Becky," the girl ordered.

"Yes, Cindy," the robot replied.

"Cindy, if you want to bring your friend along you had better call her now," Kyle said.

"OK, I will do that now."



The Alien Ship Ch. 03



Cindy went over to her purse and pulled out her cell phone. She quickly found Shelley's number in her address book and started the call. Cindy's friend answered almost immediately and the two spent several minutes just chatting with each other. Then Cindy asked her friend if she would like to take a trip with her and Kyle. Cindy had to be a little bit cagey about the details of the trip, telling Shelley the details of the trip were a surprise. Shelley thought for a moment and then agreed to come on the trip. Cindy told her friend she would be coming to pick her up in a few hours.

"Kyle, Shelley wants to come on our trip, though I am not sure if she will still want to when she finds out what it really is. I think I should go back down to Earth to pick her up if she really wants to go," Cindy said.

"OK. Go ahead and take Becky with you. Be sure to use the shuttle with the car inside," Kyle replied.

"OK. Did you want to stay here while I'm gone?"

"Yes, I want to learn more about the ship while I'm waiting for you," Kyle said.

"OK, I will call you if I get delayed too much, or if anything happens," Cindy replied.

"You should get going so you can make it back soon," Kyle told her.

"OK, as soon as I get dressed again I am off," Cindy said as she walked over to her clothes and started putting them back on again. When she finished dressing Cindy called Becky to follow her out of the room. 

The robot girl led the human one to a compartment that contained the outlet of a clothing synthesizer. This was a machine that Cindy would have to experiment with later! The robot ordered a set of stylish clothes and got dressed. Then the two females went down to the hanger deck, entered the same shuttle the two humans had arrived in, and left the ship to return to Earth.

Meanwhile Kyle decided to use the time he would be waiting for Cindy to see and learn more about his ship. So far Kyle had only seen a small part of the ship and he was very curious to see more.

"Adventure, I would like to see more of the ship. Please send an android to my cabin to guide me," Kyle stated aloud so the ships AI could hear him.

"There is an android on the way which should arrive in approximately one minute," the AI replied.

"Thank you, 'Adventure'," Kyle replied.

A moment later the door to the cabin slid open and one of the androids walked in. This one had the form of an Asian woman and since Kyle had not instructed otherwise the robot was nude. Again Kyle was struck by how lifelike the androids looked and moved. For some reason Kyle found the look of this specific android to be especially appealing and he was thinking it was going to be especially pleasant to continue his exploration of the ship today with this robot as his guide. The android came to a stop immediately in front of Kyle and looked at him with a very human-like questioning look.

Kyle thought it would be a good idea to follow Cindy's example and give this robot a name, just to make conversing with it more normal. For some reason the name Tracy seemed to be appealing for this robot and that is the name Kyle decided to use.

"Android, I've decided to give you the name of Tracy. I will address you by that name from now on," Kyle ordered.

"I understand, Kyle. From now on my name is Tracy," the robot replied with a very human like smile.

"OK, Tracy. Is there an observation room on this ship? Something that is better than the TV screen in this room?" Kyle asked the robot girl.

"Yes, there are several rooms aboard which can provide that function. Do you wish a direct view or a holographic projection?" she replied.

"Which will provide a better view?" Kyle asked.

"There is a full surround holographic projection room which probably would provide you with the most spectacular view of space." Tracy replied.

"That sounds interesting, let's go there first."

"Ok, please follow me," the robot replied.

"OK."

The android woman turned and immediately started walking for the door. Kyle followed behind the artificial girl, again marveling at how realistic her android body was. As he followed behind Tracy, Kyle had a hard time remembering that he wasn't following a real girl, he was definitely enjoying the view he was getting.

The android girl led Kyle to an elevator which they used to descend thee decks, then down the passageway to a door at the end, which slid open to admit Kyle and the robot girl.

Inside Kyle found himself inside a ball-shaped room about twenty feet in diameter and he was standing at the bottom. When he first entered the room the entire interior of the room was a neutral gray color. As soon as Kyle and Tracy were completely inside the room the door slid shut and then the artificial gravity was reversed to the point where the two were floating weightless. At the same time the lights went out.

Suddenly it seemed like Kyle and the android girl were floating in outer space, just above the surface of the asteroid upon which the ship was resting. The effect was so real that for a few seconds Kyle actually thought they had been ejected into space itself, but then he realized there was still air and warmth so he must still be inside the room.

For a few minutes Kyle just allowed himself to float there, too lost in the incredible view to even notice the falling feeling that comes with being weightless. The view provided by the holographic room was exactly like floating in space and the weightlessness reinforced this. Finally Kyle came to himself enough to start asking about the different ways the ship could display the surrounding space.

"Tracy, can you show me the view without the asteroid?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, I certainly can."

The surrounding view in the room flickered and suddenly the asteroid upon which the ship rested disappeared, leaving only the view that would have been seen if the ship was alone in space. Somehow this made the illusion of floating in outer space even more real. Kyle found himself wondering how the ship was able to reproduce the view on the side where it was blocked by the asteroid.

"Is this the actual view in the direction blocked by the asteroid?" he asked.

"Yes," Tracy answered.

"How do you do that?"

"We have a number of small observation drones in orbit around the asteroid which provide coverage in those directions unavailable for direct viewing," the robot girl replied.

"OK. Please turn the gravity back on now," Kyle ordered. He was starting to feel a bit nauseous from the constant falling feeling weightlessness gave.

"Restoring gravity now," the android replied. The ships AI was smart enough to know that the gravity should be restored gradually so that Kyle and the robot girl floated gently to the floor.

Even though Kyle and the android were now standing on the floor to the eye it still looked as though they were in space. Kyle slowly turned around in the room taking it all in. The small but brilliant sun came into view, though it was not as bright as it would have been if Kyle had actually been outside. He also found the tiny disk that was mighty Jupiter, but could not find any of the other planets.

"Can you show me the Earth?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, please look in this direction," the robot girl said, pointing. Kyle could see now two small bright stars close together.

"Magnify, please."

"OK."

The two small stars grew until Kyle could see two small crescents, one bluish colored and larger than the other.

"Can you magnify even more?"

"Yes."

The bluish crescent grew until it almost filled the view. Kyle could easily see continents and cloud patterns in the atmosphere. Off to one side was the smaller crescent of the moon, large enough to allow Kyle to see the larger craters and lava "seas". Kyle just stood there for a few minutes taking in the view of home. He had never realized how beautiful it was until now.

After a few minutes more Kyle grew tired of looking at the outside view and thought for a minute about what he would like to see next. It did not take him long to decide to explore more about the androids and how they were made. In his previous tour of the ship he had been brought through the android area pretty quickly and Kyle hadn't had much time to see what was done there. He decided he wanted to spend more time in the android area this time.

"Tracy, I would like to see android manufacturing next," Kyle told the robot girl.

"OK, please follow me," she replied. The lights came on in the room and Kyle followed the naked android girl out of the room.

Tracy led Kyle to a lift again, which could also act as a shuttle on the same deck of the ship. The lift took the pair up four decks and then aft for almost a kilometer before coming to a stop. The lift doors opened and Kyle exited with the android girl into the android center.

"Tracy, can you tell me more about the capabilities of the android infrastructure?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly. We can create an android with the appearance of either an actual living person or of an image of a person, real or artistically created. For a real person we can copy not only their appearance but also their memories and personality." Tracy replied.

"What about the androids we have on board the ship now? How was the appearance for them generated?"

"All of the androids we have now have an appearance which was generated from the many video transmissions which have been transmitted from the Earth to satellites for retransmission or broadcast back. From those we have been able to generate a wide variety of body and facial patterns that can be used for androids," the robot girl replied.

"What about memories and personalities?" Kyle asked.

"We have a number of basic generic templates that we used when the androids were created. Each android will add memories and experiences to that basic template to develop a richer personality over time."

"So the androids will become more human-like as time goes on?"

"Yes, that is correct, especially those which have a lot of personal interaction with real humans."

"And all of the female androids are fully functional sexually?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, all of the female androids are physically fully functional for sexual relations. You will find their performance of this function would improve with experience as well." Tracy replied.

"I will try this with you sometime, but not right now," Kyle told the android girl.

"OK. Just let me know when you want to have sex with me," the android girl replied.

"I will," Kyle said.

"OK. What else would you like to know about android manufacturing?"

"You said the ship can make an android that is a copy of an actual person?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, if we have the human available for scanning. There are two types of copy that can be made, a destructive and a non-destructive copy." Tracy answered.

"What is the difference between the two?"

"In the non-destructive copy only a light scan is made and the person is unharmed. But the android created in that process, while having all the memories and experiences of the person copied, will still display some occasional machine-like behaviors, and can be controlled by the network. In the destructive copy a very deep scan is carried out, down to the molecular level, and in the process the body is destroyed. However in that case the android becomes essentially the person being copied, and will have an independent logical state. You should consider carefully which type of copy you wish if you decide to copy humans to manufacture androids."

"I see. I don't think I want to try copying humans anytime soon but I will keep it in mind if that changes. Can you show me how an android is actually made?" Kyle asked.

"Certainly I can. If you would follow me I will take you to the area where the actual android body is customized with the final appearance and programming," the android girl said.

"Lead the way Tracy," Kyle said.

The android girl turned and walked through a side door into a different compartment. Kyle stepped after her and followed her into the room. Inside Kyle found several different incomprehensible machines which he assumed were part of the android manufacturing process. There were also two open boxes that looked almost like coffins without lids, with several machine attachments.

"Here is where the final programming and body customization of our androids is carried out," Tracy said when she and Kyle were fully inside the room.

"Can I watch an android actually being made?" Kyle asked.

"Yes, we will complete the manufacture of an android in a few minutes. Would you like to select the physical appearance of the new unit?" the android girl asked.

"Yes, that would be cool!" Kyle replied.

"Please make your selection on this terminal," Tracy said, pointing to a display console against one wall. Kyle walked over as the display came to life. This terminal had been reworked for human/android use so there was also a keyboard and mouse associated with it to make a more familiar interface.

On the screen Kyle could see thumbnail pictures of nude women which he assumed were the available physical profiles for androids. At the bottom were icons which were obviously tools to scroll the picture list back and forth. Kyle experimentally clicked the picture of a slim blonde woman who looked like she would make a good contrast to the Asian Tracy android who was next to him at the moment.

As soon as Kyle clicked on the thumbnail picture he had selected a much larger image appeared on the screen. Kyle was able to quickly discover the image could be rotated in every direction, even vertically. He spent a couple of minutes amusing himself with all of the different possible views he could get of the nude woman on the screen. Finally he stopped and decided it was an acceptable appearance for the android that was going to be made for him.

"Tracy, I would like to use this template for the android we are going to make," Kyle told the android girl after deciding his selection.

"OK, the final process is being started now," she replied.

Kyle heard a noise over toward one of the coffin-like boxes and moved over to get a closer view. A door slid open at one end of the box and a white, vaguely human shaped object slid into the box. Kyle looked closer at the thing now inside the box, it only had the gross portions of the human form, the fine detail of the body and limbs were not present.

"What is that inside the box?" Kyle asked.

"This is the android chassis without programming and customization applied. In this portion of the manufacturing process the android is given the final shape and programming to produce the complete robotic unit," the robot girl replied.

A cover slid over the top of the box containing the blank android body, and the machine began the final processing. There wasn't anything to actually see happen during this, which took about five minutes to be completed. During that time the robot girl continued to explain about the android center and the manufacturing process.

"The other box you can see in this room is for a human subject if it is desired to make an android copy of a human being. The person to be copied should remove their clothes and lay in the box and the system will scan their body and brain to create the template for the android." Tracy explained.

"How exact will the resemblance be between the person being copied and the android produced?" Kyle asked.

"The copy is very precise. Most of the physical characteristics such as size, weight, and finger prints, voice, and even memories and personality are the same in the resulting android. Unless you do an internal scan you would find it difficult to tell the two individuals apart."

"Is being scanned to produce an android copy painful for the person being scanned?" Kyle asked.

"Not for the non-destructive copy. In the destructive copy the human individual is destroyed to produce the android but that is also painless."

Just then the cover to the box slid aside, revealing the android that lay inside. Instead of the white, semi-shapeless mass that had been there before now there was the beautiful female that Kyle had selected earlier. The android remained motionless, not ready for activation quite yet.

"The unit is currently receiving final programming. When that is completed the android will be activated and will be ready for you to use." Tracy told Kyle.

When the ships AI reworked the ship to support humans it used patterns from several science fiction movies and TV shows as the guide for how the central control center should be laid out. The room was rectangular with two rows of work stations, one along each of the longer sides. In the front of the room was a large view screen, which came to life as Kyle entered the room. And in the center of the room on a raised dais was a larger chair where the ships commander could sit and observe both the view screen and every workstation in the room.

"While this room is not strictly necessary due to the automation extensively employed throughout the ship, it still provides a place where people or androids can manually monitor and control the ships operation," Tracy said once the three had entered the room.

Kyle slowly walked around the room looking at each work station in turn. Each one had a label plate in English attached to the console that gave the function of the station. Communications, Engineering, Life Support, External Scan, Security, and Navigation, Kyle walked past each one. Each station had a smaller view screen above and a number of controls and switches on the console below. Each work station had a comfortable swivel chair in front of it, attached to the deck but adjustable to allow each worker to sit at their console in a comfortable way.

After spending a few minutes checking out each work station Kyle moved to the large chair in the center of the room. This of course would be Kyle's chair whenever he decided this control room should be used for controlling the ship. This room looked to be a good choice when it was needed to monitor events both inside and outside the ship, such as during an emergency. When it was only necessary to monitor events outside the ship the holographic observation room seemed to Kyle to be the better choice to use.

Kyle quickly discovered that his chair could swivel to allow him to face any direction within the room and this would allow him to easily directly observe the activity at any of the workstations. Tracy took some time to show Kyle the controls he had available on the arms of his chair, mainly interfaces to the AI and communication systems. Kyle spent a few minutes practicing with them and getting a start with learning how the controls on his chair worked.

The central control room was one of the three points where it was possible to bypass the AI and control the engines and other parts of the ship directly. This was provided by the original builders of the ship to allow the living people on board to retain control of the ship if the Artificial Intelligence ever failed for some reason. In addition to central control there was also the secondary control room, which was identical in size and layout to the central control room but in a different location, and the engineering control center. Any of the three points could be used to control the ship directly if that were needed.

After spending a few more minutes in central control Kyle decided he's had enough touring the ship for the day and so he decided to return to his cabin. Arriving back there he discovered he could watch most of the movies available from Earth on his view screen, since the ship's AI was continuously monitoring satellite communications, which included the video feeds for most of the major cable channels. "Good. I would like to observe our departure from the asteroid from central control. Please arrange for enough additional android units so that all of the control stations will have an operator. The operators can start teaching us a little about how each station works, too." Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged. Sufficient android units will be waiting in central control by the time your party arrives there."

"Great! All right everyone, let's go to central control and get the trip started. Tracy, please lead the way," Kyle told the group. Kyle had been to the central control room twice before, but he still wasn't sure he would be able to find it on his own so he asked the android to lead the way.

"Yes Kyle, we can easily travel to Mercury without being seen or detected from Earth. The ship has technology allowing it to hide from detection by any sensor available to current Earth technology," the AI replied.

"Then lift off and make for Mercury immediately. Use a moderate, safe speed," Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged, executing orders now," the AI replied.

On the large view screen at the front of the room Kyle saw the surface of the asteroid suddenly drop away and the entire field of view was now stars and space. Since the distance to even the nearest stars was far greater than that to the planet Mercury the only change to the star field came when the ship changed attitude. "Yes. I am not in a hurry to get there. Just take your time and ensure we travel safely," Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged. Please inform me if you desire any course change before our arrival at Mercury."

"Thank you, I will. Please let me know when we are close to arrival at Mercury," Kyle ordered.

"Acknowledged."

The group spent another hour in central control checking out all of the control consoles and displays, as well as the androids manning them. Kyle was feeling a bit of excitement about visiting Mars since he and his crew would be the first people to visit the planet. Just being able to walk on the surface was a thrill in itself.

The passing of another hour found everyone seated on the shuttle descending toward the Martian su6rface. Kyle had instructed the androids to scan the planet as the shuttle descended and steer for anything interesting discovered in the scan. But the human constructed robots on the surface Kyle wanted to avoid by a wide margin as Kyle wasn't ready to reveal the existence of the 'Adventure' to the rest of humanity yet.

The shuttle had not even entered the Martian atmosphere before the shuttle sensors detected a significant amount of refined metal at a location down below on the surface of the planet. This news was given to Kyle as soon as the sensor reading was confirmed.

"Kyle, our sensors have detected a large quantity of refined metal at one location on the Martian surface," the android Tracy reported. The female android was sitting in the seat next to Kyle.

"Is it one of the robots from Earth?" Kyle asked

"Negative, those have already been excluded from our scans. This is something different and much larger, at least the size of this shuttle if not larger," the android answered.

"Do you know what it is?" Kyle asked.

"Unknown, do you wish to investigate?"

"Yes, please land at that location."

"Acknowledged, we will land at that location."

The shuttle continued to descend toward the surface of Mars for another hour and Kyle ordered the viewing screen turned on as they approached the surface so everyone could see the view outside. The screen showed flat, reddish, wind swept plain with a range of low hills toward which the shuttle seemed to be headed. The metal detected by the sensors seemed to be located somewhere in the hills ahead and they would be able to pinpoint the location once they approached where it was at more closely.

The shuttle swooped down over the low hills, passed over them, and then circled back, this time seeming to pick out one particular hill in the range. The shuttle passed over the hill and then descended for a landing on the plain right next to the hill. The shuttle settled onto the Martian surface and then the flight engines were shut down. Kyle and his party were now on the surface of the planet Mars. Every one of the humans noticed the sudden change in gravity as the shuttle artificial gravity shut down.

Everyone immediately started changing into their pressure suits and Kyle was treated to some nice views of his female companions as they removed their uniforms and put on their pressure suits in preparation for going outside. Kyle soon had less time for looking as he slipped into his own space suit. Once everyone was in their suits the androids spent a few additional minutes checking to make sure each person's suit was put on and functioning correctly. Finally everything was completed and the group was ready to step out onto the surface of Mars.

Everyone moved to the shuttle air lock which was not large enough for everyone to go out at the same time. Kyle put himself at the head of the line and brought two androids with him. The three stepped out onto the surface of Mars, which made Kyle the first human ever to set foot there.

Kyle found himself standing on a dusty plain about three hundred feet from the base of the hill where the shuttle sensors had detected the refined metal. Off in the distance a dust devil swirled across the plain despite the thinness of the atmosphere. Kyle noticed the pressure suit he wearing was quite comfortable and allowed him to move about on the surface of Mars quite easily. At first Kyle found it a bit difficult to walk in the light gravity but after a short time he grew more practiced and confident until soon he could move around easily. As Kyle was prancing around on the surface getting used to the low gravity the rest of the humans and androids followed him out on to the surface.

Everything on the surface had a reddish cast to it, though some were deeper red than others, and some just looked like ordinary stones. Looking up Kyle could see that the sky also had a reddish cast to it instead of the blue that might be expected. Kyle remembered reading somewhere that the color of the sky was due to wind blown dust suspended high in the thin atmosphere. As Kyle walked around on the surface he noticed small drifts of fine red dust everywhere some of which burst open in a puff of red when disturbed by his feet.

Finally after everyone had an opportunity to walk and jump around for a few minutes (and in a few cases falling) Kyle brought the attention back to the reason why they had landed at this location. The refined metal, which must be artificial by its nature, remained to be found somewhere in the hill before them three hundred feet away. There wasn't anything obviously visible, whatever it was it was, it was probably buried somewhere in the hill. Since they were now very close to that location it should be easy to localize it further.

"Tracy, can you pinpoint the location of what we are looking for?" Kyle asked using his suits built in communicator.

"Yes Kyle, the metal is buried in the hillside right in front of us," the android girl answered.

Kyle looked at the low hill in front of the group, paying attention to it for the first time. He noticed there was one portion of the hill where there seemed to have been a landslide sometime in the past. That seemed to Kyle to be the most likely place where something could be buried,

"What about the landslip right in front of us?" Kyle asked.

"Good guess Kyle, that is the location our sensors indicate," Tracy answered.

"Get out the digging stuff then and see if we can uncover it," Kyle ordered.

The androids opened the large cargo door toward the rear of the shuttle and started pulling out shovels of various types and sizes. One android even emerged driving a small tractor that looked somewhat similar to a small Bobcat skip-loader. The robots quickly moved to the side of the hill and began to dig into the landslide. Working rapidly it wasn't long before the androids exposed a wall of shiny metal.

Working with the tireless energy of the machines they were the androids rapidly cleared away the Martian soil which covered the buried object. Soon the object was revealed to be the mostly intact remains of a shuttle somewhat similar to the one which had brought the expedition to the planet surface. However this shuttle had been made by some other race than those who had constructed the 'Adventure'. It remained to be seen what the origins of the crashed shuttle were.

After working for about half an hour the androids uncovered an entrance door on the side of the shuttle which would allow them to attempt entering the shuttled. Kyle ordered the androids to attempt to open the door to the crashed shuttle and they quickly discovered some faint remains of power remained on within the ship. This allowed the androids to attempt to open the door using the controls provided for that purpose instead of cutting their way through the hull. After another ten minutes of the androids working on the door controls the door slid open, revealing the weakly lit interior of the shuttle.

With the door open several of the androids went inside to check out the interior and assure that it would be safe for the humans to enter the crashed ship. After checking the interior for a couple of minutes the androids who had gone inside signaled that it was secure and safe for the humans to enter. Kyle climbed up to the open door of the strange ship, walking carefully in the loose soil and avoiding several of the rocks which remained strewn about in the dugout area. Kyle climbed up to the open door of the ship and looked inside.



The Alien Ship Ch. 09



Inside Kyle could see several rows of what must have served the function of seats for the builders of the shuttle and each of them was still occupied by a body of an alien. He could easily see the occupants of the shuttle were nothing like humans and he could also see that they were all dead. The occupants of the shuttle were all dead and they appeared to have been that way for a long time.

The occupants of the shuttle required an atmosphere similar to that of the Earth in order to live but when the door to the shuttle had been opened there had been no puff of escaping air. The occupants of the shuttle had died because their ship had lost pressure when it impacted with the hill, or perhaps even before that. None of the occupants of the shuttle were wearing any kind of pressure suit so exposure to the normal Martian atmosphere had quickly killed them. And then it preserved them in almost the same state they had been in when they died, at least in appearance.

Despite the lack of movement inside the shuttle Kyle was startled by the appearance of the occupants and he found himself reaching for his hand weapon. Pulling the weapon from the holster and holding it in his hand, Kyle felt secure enough to step inside the shuttle to take a closer look at the occupants. The two androids who were already inside the crashed shuttle had already checked for security but Kyle still felt more confident with the weapon in his hand.

Looking at the first shuttle occupant that he approached Kyle could see they were something completely different from human. The dead alien had a lot of similarities to an insect though it was much larger than any insect from Earth. The body of these must have been nearly four feet long and they only appeared to have four walking legs. The two front legs seemed to have had the same function as human arms and looking closer Kyle could see that each of these forelegs ended in a four fingered hand.

Kyle slowly walked around the passenger compartment of the shuttle, examining each of the seven dead aliens still strapped to their places in the shuttle. They all seemed to be similar in size with about the same amount of variation found among humans. Their limbs were thicker than those of smaller insects which was necessary to contain the larger muscles needed to move them. Their heads bore two large eyes and two antennae sprouted from the top of their heads. Despite having been dead for a long period of time the alien bodies still looked surprisingly lifelike due to the hard shells that covered their bodies. The near vacuum of the Martian atmosphere enhanced their preservation even further. 

After looking around for a couple of minutes Kyle noticed Cindy peeking in the doorway of the shuttle with everyone else crowded together behind her, He also realized he was still holding his hand weapon but since every alien was obviously dead he put it away in his belt holster.

"You can come if you want Cindy. I don't think there is any danger," Kyle said over his suit communicator.

"OK," the girl answered and tentatively stepped into the shuttle. Cindy gave a start when she came to the first insectoid alien but then relaxed when the creature didn't move and she realized it was dead. "What happened to them, Kyle?"

"It looks to me like their ship lost pressure and they suffocated in the thin Martian air," he replied.

"How long have they been here?"

"I don't know. Maybe for a long time, because the near vacuum here on the surface of Mars would tend to preserve their bodies after their death. I'll have the androids examine everything and see what they can find out. Tracy, do we have any record on these bug aliens?" Kyle asked, addressing his android.

"No Kyle, we do not have any records of a race such as this one," the female android replied.

"See what you can find out about them," Kyle ordered.

"Yes Kyle."

"If it can be done safely bring this whole shuttle back to the ship. We can study it there at our leisure," Kyle continued.

"We can do that easily," Tracy replied.

"Good. Have it done as soon as possible."

After looking around the alien shuttle for a couple more minutes Kyle and Cindy slipped out the door and some of the other people outside went inside to have a look, too. Kyle decided to wait until everyone had a chance to look inside the shuttle and then they would move on to explore a little more of the surface.

Taking another look around while waiting for the rest of the women to look inside the shuttle, Kyle and Cindy could see what looked similar to any of the windswept desert areas on Earth, except for the deeper red color of the rocks and sand. Another dust devil spun out on the plain and a thin wind blew despite the thinness of the atmosphere.

Waiting for the rest of the party to have their fill of looking inside the crashed shuttle Kyle had a few minutes of time on his hands and his thoughts turned toward the hand weapons they had brought with them from the 'Adventure'. The humans had been given instruction on how to use them before departing for the surface but they hadn't had a chance to actually fire them. Kyle felt some interest in seeing what the weapons could actually do and the desolate desert surface upon which he stood now seemed to be a good place to make some test shots.

"Tracy, I would like to test fire my hand weapon. Can we do that here on the surface?" Kyle asked his android.

"Yes, Kyle. We only need to move a little further away and you can use the hillside as the target and backstop," was the reply over his suits communication system.

Tracy led Kyle a bit further away from the crashed shuttle and toward a more vertical area of the hillside in front of them. This provided a safe target for allowing Kyle to test the effects of his hand weapon. Kyle pulled his pistol from the holster and looked at the setting control. The effect and power of the weapon was controlled by a small knob on the top of the rear portion. Since this weapon had been made for human use the settings were marked with letters from the English alphabet.

The settings markers on Kyle's hand weapon were S, K, H, V, and P. The setting marked S when fired at a person would render them unconscious, K when fired at a person would kill, H would heat whatever the beam struck to a high temperature, V would disassociate the molecular structure and vaporized whatever the beam struck, and the P setting would generate an explosion wherever the beam struck. While Kyle had been told about each of these settings and what they could do he wanted to see it from actually firing the weapon himself.

Kyle could see out of the corner of his eyes the women were coming to see what he was going to do after they finished looking around inside the crashed shuttle. Actually once they saw the dead, insect-like aliens the women had little interest in spending any more time inside the crashed shuttle than they had to. So Kyle quickly drew a crowd of onlookers, both human and android until only two androids remained inside the crashed shuttle continuing their examinations. The two androids ordered a large cargo shuttle to come down to pick up the crashed shuttle and return it to the 'Adventure' for more detailed examination and analysis.

Kyle selected the S setting on his weapon, aimed at the target area of the hillside, and pressed the trigger. A red spot appeared where Kyle had pointed the weapon, this was the visible aiming beam and the actual effective beam was invisible. Since the S setting was only designed to render living beings unconscious there was no visible effect upon the cliff face beyond the red spot from the aiming beam. Kyle fired several more shots on the S setting to practice putting the beam where he wanted it to be on the target.

Kyle next selected the K setting on his w1eapon and fired once again at the cliff. Again the red dot of the aiming beam appeared but there was still no visible effect upon the rock. Kyle selected the H setting, picked out a rock about a foot in diameter at the base of the cliff, and fired the weapon at it. The beam emitted from the weapon now was slightly visible in the air and after about a second the rock began to glow red hot. Kyle released the trigger and watched as the rock slowly cooled until it was not glowing any more.

Kyle selected the V setting of his weapon and fired at another of the rocks at the base of the cliff. A visible beam emerged from the emitter of Kyle's weapon and struck the rock. The rock glowed brilliantly for a moment and then faded. When the glow had faded from view so had the rock, it had been vaporized by the energy from Kyle's weapon.

Kyle then moved the selector of his weapon to the P position, aimed at the cliff face, and again pressed the trigger button. A visible beam emerged from the emitter of Kyle's weapon and struck the cliff face which immediately erupted in a small explosion at the point where the beam struck. Kyle fired at the cliff face several more ties and each shot resulted in another small explosion. Finally Kyle holstered his weapon and turned away from the cliff area where he had been firing to discover a small crowd behind him.

"Has everyone seen the inside of the crashed ship?" Kyle asked. He was answered by a chorus of affirmative answers and now had to think about what he wanted to do next on the Martian surface.

The discovery of the crashed shuttle highlighted in Kyle's mind that he couldn't just play around with the 'Adventure' which was partially what he had been doing up to that point. It was obvious now that the Solar System had been visited by at least two different alien races in the past and perhaps more. This was inspiring Kyle to start thinking he needed to take things more seriously and leverage 'Adventure' into a real advancement for humanity. Not just exploring but colonization as well.

Here on Mars conditions were the closest to those of Earth and therefore establishing a colony here would be the easiest place. There was water and other resources here and with technology from the 'Adventure' those resources could be easily extracted for use by a colony. Once the circumnavigation of the Solar System was completed Kyle decided they would return here to get started on construction. Shuttles from the ship would allow trips back to Earth in only a few hours even if the ship was away for some reason if anyone wanted or needed to go there.

As Kyle was musing about the future another, larger shuttle from the 'Adventure' landed near the crashed alien shuttle. This new ship was large enough to take the entire crashed ship of the dead insectoid aliens back to the 'Adventure' for more detailed analysis. As soon as the engines of the new shuttle shut down the door slid open and a large work party of both android and non android robots trooped out. These robots immediately began work on loading the crashed alien ship into the large shuttle. There was no need for Kyle or any of the other humans to supervise this work in any way since the robots had it well in hand.

Kyle turned away from the cliff face that had been his impromptu firing range. As far as he could see there was just a barren windswept plain and another dust devil swirled across his field of view away in the distance. Since there were no oceans on Mars there was more land area on this planet than on Earth, despite the smaller size of the red planet. Exploring even a tiny fraction of it would take many years and would have to wait for the future and the return from the outer solar system. But as he stared out at the red desert plain Kyle realized that not everything needed to wait until the ship returned to Mars.

"Tracy!" he called through his suit communicator.

"Yes, Kyle?" the female android answered.

"Have a group of androids and any other robots or equipment that might be needed sent down to the surface of this planet to start building a colony and refit center. I want to leave two shuttles here for their use and whatever ground vehicles they need." Kyle ordered.

"Yes, Kyle. Selection of androids and equipment is starting now and will be landed when ready. Do you want any specific location for the colony site?" Tracy asked.

"No, I don't know enough about Mars to make that determination. Conduct a survey of the surface from orbit and then select the site where it would be close to useful resources."

"Acknowledged," the android replied.

"Kyle," came a sudden communication from the 'Adventure" main AI. "We have just discovered the possible remains of an alien base in the interior of the outer moon of this planet, the one called Deimos. It is difficult to determine by remote sensing but it would seem to have been constructed by the same insect-like aliens as those found in the crashed shuttle. The facility is currently inactive, no power generation is occurring there."

"Send a shuttle with a group of androids to investigate," Kyle ordered in reply.

"Affirmative," answered the AI.

It would appear that the Bugs, as Kyle found himself almost subconsciously naming them, had a more extensive presence on Mars than just a single crashed shuttle. Perhaps there were more Bug facilities on other of the planets of the Solar System, even the Earth or the Moon was a possibility. So far no living Bugs had been found but that could change at any moment and it was unknown what their reaction would be to meeting humans in space. For now the 'Adventure' was the only thing in the Solar System which had the power to prevent the Bugs from doing whatever they wanted to Earth. Kyle realized that he needed to be prepared to meet the Bugs and other possible aliens who might be out there.

Over at the crashed Bug shuttle the androids had attached a thick cable to the downed shuttle as well as antigravity lift units. Using this they were quickly able to drag the Bug ship out of its resting place embedded in the cliff and into the cargo bay of their own larger shuttle. The Bug shuttle was still intact enough that the androids were able to drag the entirety of the wreck into their own shuttle in a single move. As soon as the Bug shuttle was inside the cargo bay of their own larger craft the android work party closed the doors. All of the androids and other machines involved in the salvage operation trooped back aboard their shuttle and then their ship lifted off to return to the 'Adventure'.

Kyle decided that since he was going to be establishing a base on Mars there wasn't much point to continuing on the surface; he was curious to see what further was learned from the Bug shuttle and abandoned base as well. That being the case Kyle ordered everyone to pack up to return to the 'Adventure'. Since there hadn't been any vehicles or equipment unloaded from the shuttle yet all that needed to be done was round everyone up and load them back onto their shuttle. This was accomplished in less than fifteen minutes and the shuttle containing the humans lifted off the surface to begin the return trip to the 'Adventure'.

While Kyle's shuttle was making its way back to the 'Adventure', the shuttle sent to explore the abandoned Bug base approached Deimos and found the entrance after a short search of the surface of that moon. The door to the base was open to space and the entire interior was exposed to the vacuum of space. Inside the androids found the base had been stripped bare of everything which it had contained while it had been occupied; only the empty spaces carved into the interior of the moon remained. The android explorers spent several hours exploring the interior of the abandoned base, robotic exploration rovers were sent out to add to the data collection effort.

Kyle's shuttle entered the landing bay on the 'Adventure' an hour after departing the surface and the examination of the Bug shuttle was already well along. All of the bodies had been removed and all but one had been placed into frozen storage and a team of androids was scanning and examining the remaining insectoid body and much had already been learned about their anatomy and body structure. Another group of androids were examining and testing the shuttle and of course all the data from both groups was exchanged with the ship's AI.



The Alien Ship Ch. 10



Kyle walked back to his quarters from the shuttle bay, with the group of women and androids walking along with him. Even though the visit to the Martian surface had only lasted a short time the discovery of the Bug shuttle and being the first humans to land on the planet had given everyone a lot of excitement in that short amount of time. Reaching his quarters Kyle dropped down on the couch and Cindy plopped down beside him. Kyle noticed her uniform skirt rode up on her thighs giving him a nice view which Cindy did nothing to conceal. Lien, the youngest of the Chinese girls sat down on Kyle's other side and snuggled up to him. Seeing this Cindy did the same which made Kyle into the filling of a pleasant female sandwich.

The 'Adventure' needed to remain in orbit around Mars until the investigation of the abandoned Bug base on Deimos was completed as well as the transportation of everything needed to start constructing the new colony down to the surface. The Artificial Intelligence had already selected a location for the colony inside the Hellas Basin where the atmospheric pressure was higher than the rest of the planet and with abundant deposits of buried ice and other resources. In addition to the equipment needed to construct the colony facility the AI was also sending the spare android manufacturing system. This would allow the Martian colony to construct new androids whenever additional ones were needed to add to the work force.

Lien and Cindy sat silently with Kyle for a few minutes, providing companionship while leaving him to his thoughts for a time. In some ways the time Kyle had spent on board the 'Adventure' so far had been overwhelming and he was realizing that it would take years just to explore and learn about the ship and its contents, not to mention the rest of the solar system and what lay beyond that. 

After allowing Kyle a few minutes to quietly relax Lien lifted her head off Kyle's shoulder and noticed her mother entering the door to Kyle's cabin. As Mei-Zhen approached the couch they were sitting on Lien scooted away from Kyle far enough to provide a space where her mother could sit next to Kyle. The older Chinese woman sat down next to Kyle and turned to speak to him.

"Kyle, I have several more friends I would like to bring to the ship. Is it OK for me to do this?" Mei-Zhen asked in accented but easily understandable English.

"If they are willing to follow my orders and rules as the Captain and Owner of the 'Adventure' they are welcome. There is still plenty of room on the ship. But anyone who comes to the ship won't be able to return to Earth for a while, be sure they understand that Mei-Zhen," Kyle answered.

"I will make sure everyone understands what you require of them Kyle," Mei-Zhen said.

"Good. But I don't want anyone from the ship returning to Earth this time, send androids instead. You can make a double of yourself if you want to, but I want you to stay here," Kyle added.

"As you wish Kyle," Mei-Zhen said.

"Hey Kyle, why don't you have everything from our house brought to the ship, too," Cindy added from his other side. "You can have some of the androids take care of the moving. If we're going to be living on the ship for an extended period of time there are a lot of things at home I would like to have."

"OK, why don't you and Mei-Zhen manage all of that work? Anyone else who wants to get the rest of their stuff from Earth can do the same. But send androids, I don't want anyone returning from the ship for now." Kyle ordered.

"OK, Kyle," Cindy replied, getting up from where she was sitting next to Kyle. Mei-Zhen rose at the same time and the two women walked out of Kyle's cabin. Lien scooted back over until she was sitting next to Kyle once again, snuggling up to him without saying anything.

Cindy and Mei-Zhen quickly found their personal androids and started giving instructions for a shuttle to be prepared for a trip back to Earth, making sure first that a trip of that distance was possible for a shuttle. Cindy was assured that all of the shuttles on board the 'Adventure' were capable of traveling anywhere in the Solar System, so a trip from Mars to Earth and then back would be no problem, even after the ship left Mars to continue on to the next planet, Jupiter.

The two women decided the best thing to do would be to include android copies of each of them on the shuttle to Earth; these could be controlled remotely from the ship whenever necessary if the android AI couldn't handle the situation. With android copies on the scene there wouldn't be any trouble making the interpersonal contacts required and no one would know the person they were dealing with was actually an android. The Cindy double would take care of the work of collecting Kyle's and her things from their house and loading them into the cargo bay of the shuttle. The Mei-Zhen copy would take care of contacting the Chinese woman's friends and bringing them to the shuttle. They would also send several other androids along as security and stevedores.

Cindy and Mei-Zhen made their way to the android area and spent the next half hour allowing the android manufacturing system to scan their bodies and build android copies of them. The two women were amazed when the process was done at how much the android copy of each woman was like the living person. Not only the physical reproduction perfect but somehow the android copying process had given the two androids the memories of the women they duplicated. This was far more than either of the two women had expected but had the good point that it would greatly reduce the amount of supervision Cindy and Mei-Zhen would have to provide to their android duplicates.

The duplicate Mei-Zhen and Cindy were provided with the clothes, shoes, and other items the real Cindy and Mei-Zhen had used on Earth as well as all their available cash and credit cards. Cindy discovered her android double was even able to sign her name exactly as she did herself, increasing her confidence the androids would be able to pull off their impersonation undetected by anyone on Earth. Then the two women sent their android impersonators off, along with several other androids, on the trip to Earth in one of the shuttles.

Almost as soon as Cindy and Mei-Zhen left Kyle's cabin Tiffany and Jackie ran in, almost bursting with excitement, the male android still with them. The two girls plopped down on the couch on the other side of Kyle from where Lien was sitting.

"Hey Kyle, you got to come see what we've found, it's so cool!" Jackie exclaimed excitedly.

"What is it Jackie?" Kyle asked, well aware that so far he'd had a chance to see only a small part of the 'Adventure' so far.

"Just come with us, it's not far," Jackie replied.

"OK," Kyle agreed, standing up and Lien getting up with him. Tiffany and Jackie both bounced to their feet and walked quickly out of Kyle's cabin, with Kyle and Lien following along behind them.

The two girls led Kyle and Lien down two decks and through a maze of twisting passageways until they reached a closed door at the end of a passageway. As soon as the four humans reached it the door slid aside, revealing the chamber beyond.

Inside Kyle was startled to find himself in a very realistic simulation of a forest clearing and it was only the discontinuity of the still open door that made the illusion easy to see through. On the floor was a thick carpet of real grass and a waterfall fell merrily off a five foot drop off to one side, the water flowing in a curved stream under a wooden foot bridge to end in a pool about twenty feet in diameter. A brick walkway led from the door over the foot bridge to a small patio next to the waterfall. The patio contained several patio-style tables and chairs to match. The compartment was filled with a very close simulation of natural summer sunlight on Earth, warming the room but not making it uncomfortably hot.

Kyle slowly walked back to the still open door to the room and looked at the wall along the side of the wall. It was only when Kyle got right up next to the wall that he could see that the view beyond the wall was somehow being projected from behind the wall. It was as if the walls and roof of the room were video screen panels but the effect was much more realistic.
