Enjoy!* * Elle had been lying in the warm sand for hours, enjoying the beginnings of the summer heat. She knew it wasn't good for her skin, especially at 27 years old but she had been restless all winter, and figured one day wouldn't kill anyone. She hated the biting cold of Toronto winters. Having grown up in California, where the sun always shines and the beaches were constantly packed, it was a hard move to make, but one she had no choice in making. She sighed, pushing those thoughts from her head. I'm here to relax, she thought, not dwell on the past. She readjusted her towel on the ground and flipped onto her stomach, resting her head on her arms. Just as she got comfortable again, she felt something smash into her thigh, leaving a distinct sting where it had made contact. "What the f-.." she began yelling, tearing her earphones from her ears, but stopped having seen the source of all the commotion. A tall silhouette stood before her, the sun behind him making it hard for her to distinguish his features. "I'm so sorry" he said quickly, clearly trying to suppress a laugh. "My friends and I were playing some footy, and Josh there has horrible aim." She looked down and saw the ball at his feet. Damn she thought realizing what made the impact with her thigh, that stings! But she'd be damned if she'd let him know how much it hurt. She'd seen them earlier when she arrived at the beach, a group of six men, all presumably in their early 30s . "Obviously." She said dryly. "The net is on the other side of the beach. It's fine, just make sure it doesn't happen again or --" Her words were cut off, this time because he had knelt and touched her thigh. She could see him properly now. He was tanned; his jet black hair tousled from the wind and eyes the colour of honey. He had a straight nose and wide smile, filled with perfectly even, white teeth. How the hell can someone have teeth so perfect she thought. He had a bit of stubble growing and she could tell from the white tank top he wore, that he kept fit. He looks like Adonis himself she thought, or one of those Greek gods. She was drawn back to earth when she felt his fingers brush against her skin again, leaving a trail of goosebumps. She'd been caught staring and she knew it. His mouth twitched slightly at the corners, hiding a knowing smile. "Well he has horrible aim, but I'll give it to him he can kick a ball pretty hard. Your leg is pretty red, does it sting?" "It's fine!" she exclaimed, brushing his fingers away "You might want to get back to your game though, I'm sure your buddy has a few more people he wants to injure!" "Hey, I'm sorry I --" "Look, I just want to sit here and enjoy the sun like everyone else. Just don't pass the ball to...Josh is it? And we'll all be happy." She turned onto her back again, shoving her sunglasses on and putting her earphones in, she watched him take one last glance at her, and return down the shore to his buddies. They clapped him on the back, clearly plying him with questions. Why was she being so rude to him, it's not like he was the one who kicked the ball so horribly. She was unsettled by how nice his hand felt on her skin, and that damn smug smile he had when he caught her staring. Fucking guys, she thought huffing out loud. She closed her eyes again and let herself relax into David Gray's voice, singing Sail Away. She'd always found his voice so soothing. Half way through the song though, she felt that sting again, as the ball hit her stomach then bounced on her head, leaving a trail of sand on her body and face. Son of a bitch she thought. She got up spitting sand from her mouth, threw off her sunglasses, took the ball and kicked it back, and smiled as it hit the man she assumed was Josh straight in the chest. "Hope that stings, you ass", she called. Having been an avid football fan and playing the game most of her life, she had pretty great aiming skills. They didn't have to know that though. His buddies were all laughing as she sat back down. The one she'd named Adonis even made his way over again, but she couldn't hear what he was saying, her music blaring into her ears. "What?" she snapped. "Hey!" He looked a little affronted. "Look I'm really sorry; he can't help his horrible aim. You, though, seem to have great aim. I'm assuming you hit your target?" She fixed him with a serious stare, but couldn't help but melt as he smiled at her. She found herself smiling back and let out a small laugh. "Yes, I hit exactly what I was aiming for." "Great. Then you can play with us." He said in a matter of fact tone. She laughed again, "Thanks but no thanks, as much as I enjoy being hit repeatedly by a football, I was actually just going to leave. I don't know how much more abuse my body can take from an inanimate object." "Hey c'mon now, don't let us ruin the day! You can get some payback" he said while cocking an eyebrow, giving a mischievous look. She laughed again. She liked the ease in which he joked with her, even if his friends did slam a ball into her twice. She was also never one to refuse a challenge. "Fine" she agreed, "God knows I can't resist a little revenge." -------------------------------------------------- Gabe caught a look of ferocity as she accepted his offer to play with the rest of the guys. It gave him a strange feeling, a tug somewhere in his gut. She looked like she could keep her own. He couldn't resist admiring her as she made her way ahead of him towards the group. She had amazing curves he thought, not like those stick thin girls he always saw. She was in a black one piece halter swimsuit, which plunged at the neckline. She had pulled on shorts for the game; even those left little to the imagination. He wondered why she wasn't in a bikini; she certainly had the body for it. Her legs weren't extremely long by any means, but she wasn't short either. They led to an amazing ass, full and round. As she turned around his gaze was drawn to her breasts. Damn he thought, mentally shaking himself, focus on the game! It was her turn to catch him in the act. "C'mon, you scared I'm gonna kick your ass?" she called over her shoulder, smiling. "You can try" he replied with a grin on his face. As they reached the group he gestured to each man in turn. "Josh, Aiden, Blaine, Seamus, Ian this is-" "Ellena" she extended her tanned arm to shake each of their hands. "You forgot one more person" she said turning to him. Her chocolate eyes gazing into his, an eyebrow cocked. He had to suppress a laugh. "Gabriel. Call me Gabe, please" he smiled. "Well Josh, I can't wait to return the gifts you gave me" she gestured to her leg, still red from the hit, smiling evilly. Josh gave her an "as if you could hit me" stare. Gabe laughed, while Ian announced "Ellena's on my team boys, let's get this game going!" Seamus, Elle, and Ian were on the first team, Gabe and the others the second. He was utterly surprised by the level of skill she possessed. After putting Josh in his place a few times, she got serious. He saw the competitiveness slowly form, the focus in her eyes. She was killing the other team. The more he watched and played with her, the more that tugging feeling in his gut grew. They played for about an hour, before the other team cried out in defeat to a final score of 6-3. He watched as she collapsed with the other guys into the sand; sweat trickling down her neck, her face flushed. Her long hair that had hung in a ponytail previously was now a little loose, small strands falling in her face. "We're done." Huffed Blaine "Ellena, you're a handful for someone so small." he said laughing "Little, pshh, easy to say when you're what, 6ft 11" she laughed, while punching him lightly, "Anything is little to you." Gabe was amazed how easily she joked with everyone, like they had all been friends for years. He watched as she rose, making her way to the water while half the guys were laughing at the others for losing to a girl. He stood and began following her path to the shore. She stopped just at the edge of the water, letting her toes test the temperature, before walking in deeper. "How's the water?" he called. He watched her start slightly, clearly not expecting anyone to have followed her. She turned around, now waist deep into the beach. Well technically lake, thought Gabe. Toronto called its lake The Beaches, but the lack of salt water and ocean never stopped anyone from using any other name. "It's perfectly warm" she called back. Gabe began making his way towards her, now up to her shoulders in the water. He didn't know what it was, but there was something about her that just drew him in, like a magnet. "Good game" he said as he reached her "Something tells me you've played before." She laughed loudly; it was infectious, he couldn't help but join in. "I used to play in high school and college. It's always been my favourite sport" "Obviously." She smiled at the use of her earlier words. He swam closer to her, his leg skimming against hers slightly, sending a tingle up his spine. Chocolate locked on honey for what seemed an eternity, unable to stand the distance anymore he moved even closer, almost chest to chest and his hand cupped her cheek, never breaking the gaze. He needed to kiss her. Her lips were so perfect, now that he looked at her closely. Full, each lip mirrored the other, perfectly heart shaped. He leaned in, his arm reaching under the water for her waist, to bring her closer. He saw a look of hesitation in her eyes, but he couldn't resist. Just as he brushed her lips lightly there was a massive splash of water from all sides causing them both to gasp. -------------------------------------------------- Elle was brought back to reality. She just noticed all the guys around them playfully splashing each other. The moment between her and Gabe lost, she pushed him away. Damn, she thought. That was too close. What was she thinking? How could she let him get that close? It felt so right, so deliciously good. No, she thought, this can't happen. She knew the cost of getting involved with anyone. She couldn't risk it. She had given up everything last time. If he found her here, or found Gabe even touching her...she pushed those thoughts aside. He won't find out, she thought, because I've been so careful all these years. She looked around and forced a laugh as the guys continued their play. Gabe gazed at her, a strange look in his eyes. She quickly looked away and joined in the play-fight. She had to avoid him. She grabbed Ian by the shoulders and pushed him into the water laughing, as he came up sputtering. In a return gesture, Ian and Seamus grabbed her arms and legs and swung her back and forth, while she yelled at them to put her down. "What do you think Ian, shall we oblige the young lady?" Seamus called to his friend "Certainly" agreed Ian "No!" she laughed, "NO!" She found herself flying through the air before she hit the water a few feet out from the group. She came up for breath sputtering, fire in her eyes. The guys were all laughing, as she made her way to Seamus, she climbed on his shoulders trying her hardest to push him back under the water. He easily tossed her back, laughing harder. "How about some help?" came Gabe's voice behind her "I'm doing fine on my own" she fumed. "Right, the last dunk in the water clearly shows you're more than capable" his voice dripping with sarcasm. She splashed him in the face with more water. She knew it was silly and childish, but her inability to get back at them frustrated her, even if it was all fun and games. She may have been better at football, but in the water, their longer legs and strong arms had easily put them at an advantage "I'm leaving" she called. "It's been a pleasure boys!" she replied to calls of disappointment. She mock bowed as she found her footing in the sand. Some called to meet the same time next weekend. She gave a non committal nod and made her way back to her belongings. She was packing her beach bag and rolling her towel up when a shadow loomed over her. "When can I see you again?" Gabe's voice came out in a low tone. "You can't. This was fun, really, thank you for inviting me to play" She forced a wide smile as she turned to face him. Why does he have to look like a Greek god, standing there dripping wet, topless and just utterly gorgeous she thought. It's not fair. She had never felt so unarmed by a man. Never felt such an instant connection. She had felt him watching her all day, while she played, and joked with his friends. She knew even in the few short hours they had interacted that there was more between them. She began walking down the boardwalk. He followed her, catching her arm at the elbow. "Elle I-" "Ellena. You don't know me well enough to call me Elle." She didn't know why she was being so formal. She just needed to get away. His touch and gaze were tearing down her walls. Walls she had spent years building to protect herself -- and those she loved. "Elle" he continued defiantly "I have to see you again. I WILL see you again. Why are you running away, just when all the fun has started? The sun hasn't even begun to go down!" She pulled free of his grasp. "I can't..." He saw something in her eyes. Fear? Before he could think more of it she turned and began fleeing again. He caught her by the waist this time, as he spun her around his lips came crashing down on hers. They were warm and soft and eager. Boy, was he a good kisser. He had her lips parted and his tongue tracing her lips lightly before darting into her mouth, teasing her tongue, drawing it into his. She couldn't help the small moan that escaped her throat. It was just...divine. Gasping, she pulled away instantly remembering everything that was on the line. Not knowing what to do she slapped him so hard her hand was stinging. It wasn't the first time she'd experienced that sensation that day. Gabe's face had a dazed and shocked look. She could really hit, he thought, rubbing his cheek to alleviate the stinging. She turned on her heel and ran before he could do anything else. Stupid, stupid stupid! She kept repeating to herself. He had told her. He told her that day so many years ago, that he would always be watching, everywhere she went. As careful as she had been, the move to Toronto, the name change, she could never be sure he hadn't tracked her down. She was hoping against hope that she had done a good enough job in leaving everything behind in California. For Gabe's sake, and hers. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 02 *Thank you all for your amazing comments and feedback on the first chapter. Big thanks to Pennlady for schooling my ass on punctuation; I was getting a little lazy. This story is building on its own and at its own pace, so it may be a bit slow and I apologize! Lots of characters are walking around in my head! This definitely isn't a "quickie" so if that's what you're hoping for I'm sorry. I promise more answers in the third! Enjoy* * Elle had just set her sandy feet through her apartment door, when the phone rang. She jumped, so deep into her thoughts; she hadn't expected the sudden assault on her ears. Flopping onto the sofa, she answered the phone with a sigh. "Hello," she said as calmly as she could. Without stopping for one breathe, a loud, excited voice rang into her ear, "Good! You're there! You know I seriously think it's time you got a cell phone. Elle honey you won't believe what just happened!" Jenna, she thought. She smiled at her friend's enthusiastic tone. She could just picture her jumping up and down on the other side of the line. She and Jenna had instantly become friends when Elle had moved to Toronto, seeking a place to stay. Jenna had been her first roommate in the city. Everyone said they were sisters for all intensive purposes, although they couldn't look more different. Where Elle was curvy and full, Jenna was thin and toned. Where Elle was bronze, Jenna was light, and blonde. Yet despite all their differences physically and otherwise, Jenna had been a rock she had so desperately needed. She was the only person who fully knew about Elle's past. It spoke volumes of Jenna's character that she had weeded out the details and loyally kept them a secret from everyone they knew. Much to Elle's disappointment, Jenna had moved out of their apartment to move in with her boyfriend Eric a year ago. It didn't change much though, they practically saw each other every day, and if not, it was almost certain one would call the other. Today, however, Elle wasn't much in the talking mood. "Hellooo? Elle, you still there?" "Yeah sorry hun, just spent a little too long in the sun I guess. So what's this amazing news you have for me?" forcing some excitement into her voice. "Eric. Just. Proposed!" she squealed, punctuating each word. "What?!" Both women began screaming into their phones like school girls. Elle unexpectedly began tearing up for her friend. She was beyond happy for her. Jenna and Eric were made for each other; they weren't complete until they met -- peas in a pod as they say. "So, will you be my maid of honour?" she asked when they both calmed down. "I -- ofcourse! Jen! I'm so happy for you! This is going to be the wedding of the century!" she said, truly excited now. If there was anything Elle loved, it was a happy ending, or in this case a beginning. They spoke of wedding details until Elle's ear almost fell off, before they planned a lunch date for later in the week. Although Jenna had distracted her for a few minutes, Elle found her mind refused to forget about Gabe. The minute she had hung up with Jenna, her thoughts were drawn back to him. He had a way of demanding her attention, but also that of his friends. He was a natural leader. She thought of what she had felt when he touched her. It was nothing short of electric. And that kiss. She would be lying if she said she didn't enjoy it. She'd met men over the years, but none had the effect he had on her. It didn't make sense, she didn't know a thing about the man other than he played soccer, yet she couldn't get him out of her mind. "Augh!" she blew out exasperated, plopping her head into the cushions. "He was perfection," she mumbled into the pillows, her voice muffled. "Great. I'm talking to pillows now. Perfect." Too bad they don't talk back, she thought. Sitting up and making her way to the shower, she thought about the past, how she came to be where she was now, the upcoming wedding, and most of all Gabe. ---------------------------------------------------------- "There you are! You know, I wasn't kidding when I said you should get a cell phone! You're twenty minutes late!" Elle did have a cell phone, but hadn't given out the number except to two people she would probably never see again. It hadn't rung in 7 years, thankfully, she thought. It was meant for strictly life or death circumstances. "Jenna, I'm so sorry," she huffed, brushing her hair out of her face "I was in a meeting and I really couldn't get out any sooner, you know how it is -" "Yeah yeah, big architect, big projects, got it. Let's eat, I'm starved!" They made their way into Centro, one of the city's best Italian places. The line ups usually wrapped around the corner, and they didn't take reservations. It was lunch, however, so it was not as crowded as it would have been with the dinner crowd. The owner, Toni, was always making his way around the tables, getting to know his customers. Elle had been no exception. They both became good friends over the years despite the 20 year age gap; he even brought her to the back of the kitchen a few times to cook for her personally and never anything off the menu. He constantly said, a beautiful woman always inspired him to create a beautiful meal. Of course, who better to cook it than the owner himself? Elle spotted him speaking to a couple in the back. She smiled at how naturally he could make people feel like they had known him forever. He had had the same effect on her when they met, his easy personality had been one of the reasons she confided in him her deepest secrets. Despite being in his late forties, he was a handsome man, and still single. Like a young Andy Garcia or Alec Baldwin. Of course he's sexy, he's Italian and has more charm than a hundred men combined, Elle thought. He looked up, as if feeling her gaze, smiling he winked at her. "Ellena, dear, so good to see you again! Ah and you've brought the lovely Jenna," he said with a hint of an accent, as he made his way over to their table. She smiled at his use of their full names. As much as she told him to call her Elle, he refused, saying it was almost blasphemous to shorten names so beautiful. Everything was bloody "beautiful" to Toni. "Toni, it's been too long!" she said as they kissed each other's cheeks. "It has, but no matter, I shall prepare something special for the occasion, yes?" "Even if I refused, I know there's no changing your mind. Plus, it truly is a special occasion, Jenna's engaged!" "Wonderful," he said clapping his hands together, "and about time! Jenna darling, congratulations! I expect an invitation you know." He flashed a dazzling smile, to which no woman could possibly refuse a request from. After all, it was Toni who introduced his best friend Eric to Jenna. Jenna laughed "Of course Toni, I could never leave you out of such an important day." "Bene, I shall start your lunch ladies, only the best for my two favourite women," he winked again and made his way to the kitchen. As they sat, waiting for Toni to return with something that would most definitely be heaven in a dish, they chatted about how Eric had proposed, in every minute detail. They had been on their daily jog, through the beautiful trails surrounding their suburban home. The trails lead to steep cliffs that had the most breathtaking views of Lake Ontario. Elle had been on these trails several times, and they never failed to amaze her every time. Eric had feigned a sprain at the specific spot where the trail opened and you could see for miles in every direction. The hundreds of tall trees surrounding them, before the trail took a dip into the shore below, where the beach was laid out for miles. The sun hitting the water, reflecting millions of little crystals back up at the world. He pulled the ring from his pocket and proposed to Jenna right there, all sweaty in their shorts and tank tops, but it was absolutely perfect. Elle sat across from her friend and smiled so wide while the story was being recounted. Jenna's eyes were distant reliving the moment; Elle trying to imagine it. They were broken out of their reverie when Toni returned with two servers at his side holding large plates in each hand. Elle caught different smells as they set down each plate. Basil, rosemary, thyme all floated into the air. It looked as good as it smelled. For starters he created a phyllo pastry filled with goat cheese, eggplant, sun dried tomatoes and red peppers on top of an arugula salad. Toni had prepared two pizzas, each with only the best ingredients. Next to those was a plate of gnocchi, which he no doubt knew Elle loved. There was also fresh pasta that was rolled in layers of mushrooms and ricotta and herbs with the most heavenly tomato cream sauce. "Shall we ladies? Don't want it to get too cold!" "Toni, this looks absolutely delicious! You really do spoil us!" Elle practically squealed. If she loved anything, it was a well cooked meal. They began eating all together, pausing at times to make small talk. Elle or Jenna would occasionally sigh contentedly and look at each other with a "is this the best thing you've ever had or what" look on their face. "So, Elle darling, when are we going to hear wedding bells chiming for you hmm?" Toni winked at her. Elle choked a little on the rose wine she was sipping. Setting down the glass, she let out a nervous laugh. Jenna and Toni had been on her ass for as long as she could remember. The subject of men was not one she enjoyed talking about often. It led to other questions, which she most definitely did not want to answer. She hadn't even mentioned Gabe to Jenna yet. "Whenever I meet someone as amazing as Eric. Or you," she added quickly as she caught the mock hurt expression on his face. He laughed, nudging her with his shoulder. "Well you have a problem there dear, there is no one as amazing as I," he announced in all grandeur, laughing as he dodged Ellena's hand as she made to smack the back of his head. "Really Ellena," he continued ducking his head again, "don't wait too long! You don't want to end up a wrinkly old maid with 10 cats and a vibrator to keep you company." "Why you old charmer, you. It's a miracle you can get women in bed, the way you speak to them!" she replied her hand finally finding its target. "Who are you calling old?" he asked rubbing his head where she had playfully hit him. She simply rolled her eyes. ---------------------------------------------------------- Jenna caught her eye, and she knew what Elle was thinking, despite all the joking. It was difficult for Elle to trust people, with good reason. It would take her so much longer to get involved with someone than most people. That was IF she ever did. Jenna felt sad for her friend. It was unfair the life she was dealt. The constant looking over your shoulder, the fear she hid so well. She wished she could see her truly relax, and enjoy life without worrying about consequences. As well as Ellena hid it from other people, Jenna noticed how she would glance around her all the time, searching faces. She noticed how she stiffened lightly when people touched her; she noticed how sometimes her smile never reached her eyes. There was too much sadness in them. Jenna had to give it to her though, Elle hid it pretty well. The only reason Jenna could see these things was because she knew about what happened, and she had lived with her for years. She had seen what that bastard Jared had done to her, mentally and physically. Jenna thought back to the first time she had met Ellena. She had shown up on her doorstep after putting out an ad for a roommate; Elle had looked so tired to Jenna, that some sort of instinct made her want to help out. After a brief conversation, Jenna had decided Elle was normal enough for a roommate; she hadn't realized how wrong she was -- at least about being normal. There was nothing normal about Ellena's life and Jenna had learned that by accidentally walking into the bathroom the girls both shared and seeing the scars on Ellena's body. Jenna had a feeling if that hadn't happened, she still wouldn't know Ellena's story. Jenna walked into her apartment, rushing to the bathroom to relieve herself after waiting on the insufferably long subway ride home. She didn't really think to stop and check if anyone was in the bathroom -- the draw backs of living alone for so long. She burst through the door her hands struggling to undo her zipper while hopping from one foot to the other, before she stopped at the sight in front of her. Elle had just stepped out of the shower and let out a small shriek as she saw Jenna standing there. Both women stood shocked before regaining some composure, as Ellena grabbed a towel and Jenna zipped her pants back up. It would have been hilarious if Jenna hadn't noticed something strange. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I just got home I didn't realize --" Jenna's voice caught and her eyes widened as she caught a glimpse of the scars along Elle's ribs and stomach, before she could cover up with her towel. "Its -- Its ok, I just finished my shower. The bathroom is all yours!" Elle replied brightly, not quite looking Jenna in the eyes as she brushed past her, towards her room. What the hell she thought. Those scars, they looked painful, and somewhat new. What happened to her? Would it be too pushy of her to ask Ellena this early in their friendship? She had to admit she was curious about her new roommate. She didn't know much about her, she never spoke of her family or her life before moving here. She had only been living with her for a few weeks now. What the hell, Jenna thought, I'm never one to be so shy. She turned from the bathroom and knocked on Elle's door. No answer. She opened the door and peeked in regardless. Elle didn't have much, just a suit case with some clothes, her new bed, a dresser and mirror someone had left on the sidewalk that she managed to refurbish. Jenna found her sitting on her bed, facing away from her. As she came around she realized Elle had tears running down her face. Shit. This can't be good, Jenna thought. What did this poor girl go through? "Elle, honey, are you ok?" "I'm fine," she glanced up finally with a watery smile. "Bullshit. Why are you crying in here, and what the hell did I see in there? What happened to you?" "Jenna...there's so much you don't know. You've been so nice to me and I feel so horrible for keeping something like this from you. It's not fair to you." "Elle, what are you on about?" "'I've been meaning to tell you, but it can't leave this room. Jenna I'm serious, no one can know." "Okay, I promise. No one will hear it from me." What the hell is going on, she thought. How serious is this? Jenna had figured an accident had been the reason for the scars and her obvious distress. She didn't know how wrong she was. "A few months ago, before I moved here, my fiancé and sister...I- I killed them. " ---------------------------------------------------------- "JENNA!" Jenna's head snapped up, and she was brought back to the present. Toni and Elle were staring at her with bemused looks on their faces. "Where have you been the past 5 minutes? Dreaming of Eric?" Toni teased. "Sorry guys, just a trip down memory lane," she said smiling quickly. "You've barely touched your food lady, want to share?" Elle wiggled her eyebrows and speared gnocchi with her fork without waiting for a reply. Jenna noticed Elle's plate was empty. She was always surprised by how Elle practically inhaled her food. The girl had to have a hollow leg or something. Sighing, she pushed her plate towards Elle so they could share. "So, how was the beach last week? You got a pretty good tan for this early in the year," Jenna asked, trying to steer the conversation away from her thoughts "That might have to do with the few hours under the sun I spent playing soccer with six other guys," she said casually. She regretted saying anything almost instantly as both Jenna and Toni bombarded her with questions. She couldn't blame them though; for Elle, any interaction with men was a big deal, they all knew why. She gave them a quick summary of what happened, leaving out the kiss between her and Gabriel. There was no way she was heading down that memory with these two right now. They would never let her rest until she somehow contacted him. "Please tell me you got one of their numbers Elle! You need to get out there, meet people again." "I didn't, and I don't plan on going back to find them either. You both know how it is and nothing's going to change, that's that, so drop it." Jenna glared at her friend. She could be so stubborn sometimes. If only she could get Elle to see that she didn't have to put her life on pause forever. Jenna's wish was about to come true. ---------------------------------------------------------- Gabe was walking down his favourite street. It was lined with the cities best restaurants and boutiques. Ever since last week, he couldn't seem to get Ellena off his mind. She was in his dreams (and not the PG kind) and thoughts constantly. He was hoping he would run into her at the beach again, but she was nowhere to be seen. Maybe this weekend, he thought with a smile on his face. He wanted a chance to talk to her, and if he was being honest with himself, to kiss her again...even if the cost was another slap in the face. He just couldn't help himself. Usually he was more careful with girls, especially after the fiasco with Keira. But there was something about Ellena he had instantly found intriguing. He'd noticed her even before Josh began taking horrible shots at her. Actually, a lot of men noticed her, there was an obvious line of them turning their heads as she walked past, but she seemed oblivious to it all. At first, it was simply her looks that caught his attention, but he'd been surprised when she kicked the ball back at Josh -- a woman who can play, that's my kind of girl! It made him wonder what other surprises she was hiding. He'd been glancing over every now and then, wondering how to approach her. Josh had provided the perfect opportunity. I'll have to thank him, he thought. She had looked so cute when she was angry, that he'd wanted to laugh. She was a feisty little thing. He puffed out a sigh, I need to stop this. She's just another girl I met. Despite himself, he was thinking about their brief kiss when he finally reached his destination. As he glanced up at the windows of Centro he couldn't quite believe his eyes. Sitting at one of the restaurants window tables was Ellena, and another blonde woman. In between them was his brother Toni laughing as Ellena smacked him upside the head. This has to be some cosmic joke right? He thought. How the hell does Toni know her and why haven't I seen her here before? He wondered if Toni had any past with her. His brother was popular with women; it seemed he was destined to be an eternal bachelor. The thought of him with Ellena sent a surge of jealousy through Gabriel. What is it about this woman that's gotten under my skin? Her long dark auburn hair was flowing down her back in loose waves. She was dressed in black pants that seemed to hug her body and a royal blue blazer fitted in all the right places. His breath caught as he continued staring at her, still unable to believe his eyes. As if sensing his gaze, she looked out the window and froze. Their eyes locked on each other and he flashed a smile and walked in, with a new bounce to his step. ---------------------------------------------------------- What the hell? What's he doing here?! Keep calm. He's probably meeting his friends for lunch, maybe he won't come over here. Oh please, please don't let him come over here! Her thoughts tumbled in her head one after the other. Next to her Toni jumped out of his seat and practically yelled, "Gabe! You're early!" while clapping him on the back. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 02 "I know, excuse me Toni if I interrupted your lunch with these two lovely ladies." He knows Toni?! Oh perfect, just bloody fabulous. The universe must be laughing at me right now. "Jenna, Ellena this is my brother Gabriel Di Sisto. Gabriel, this is the lovely Jenna Carlton, soon to be Jenna Williams, and this is the beautiful Ellena Cavalieri." "Toni, you never mentioned your brother was an Armani model!" Jenna joked, throwing her hand out to shake Gabe's. Barely able to meet Gabe's eyes, Ellena extended her arm and shook his hand. They were strong and soft, and held hers for a moment longer than necessary. Suddenly what Toni had just said caught her attention. "De Sisto? But Toni, your last name is Moretti." "Ah, always so astute my dear. Yes, Gabe is my step brother. His mother married my father and we have been one big happy Italian famiglia since!" "In all the years I've known you, never once have you mentioned your parents remarried!" "Small detail, I don't think of us in any other way but as one family." "Good to see you again Ellena," Gabe said while gazing so deep into her eyes, she felt he could see through her. It was Jenna's turn to point out the obvious. "Again? Am I missing something here Elle?" "Yes, how do you know dear Ellena? I've only been trying to set you two up for years now and you both managed to avoid it like the plague!" Toni asked, surprise clear in his voice. "This is him?" she asked at the same time Gabe said "This is her?" I can't believe my luck she thought. Amongst all the attempts of Jenna and Toni to bring her out of her shell, Toni had been trying for years to get Ellena to go out with his elusive brother, insisting they were perfect for each other. She had met all his family but never Gabe, as Toni always explained, he was working late at the office, always missing family dinners. She had always politely declined the offers to set up dates and Toni eventually ceased in his efforts, no doubt seeing she wasn't ready yet. After all who wanted to date someone who showed no interest whatsoever, and missed family nights? Realizing that they were still waiting for an answer to Toni's question, she quickly blurted out "We met briefly at the beach last weekend. Short game of soccer with a few guys, good fun." "Yeah, my jaw has never quite been the same since, thanks for that Ellena," He flashed a wicked smile. She blushed and looked away. Damn it, why did he have to kiss me? Why did my hands have a mind of their own when they slapped him? I wish he didn't look at me like that she thought. Why oh why did he have to be Toni's brother, of all people?! Jenna let out a small laugh, "One of the mystery men! He's gorgeous! Ellena was just telling us about her little encounter last week." Typical Jenna, can't keep her mouth shut, she thought. "Oh did she now?" he asked his eyes never leaving hers. "Well, I met six guys remember? Gabe was just one of them." Let him eat that, him and that smug look on his face, she thought. "Just the one you kissed. Twice." Gabe's smile was widening further. Damn, he doesn't play fair does he? "Elle, you left that bit out." Jenna and Toni said in unison. "I did not kiss you! You followed me, both times!" "I'm pretty sure you kissed me back." "I. Did. Not. Kiss. You. Maybe the slap in the face wasn't clear enough?" She fixed him with a stare most men would shy away from, but he just started laughing, angering her further. He seemed to be enjoying this. "Yes, they say anger is just another form of passion. I must say you are pretty passionate, both at the beach and now," he winked and gave her another smug smile. If Ellena had been standing she would have stomped her stiletto clad foot. One second he was all Fabio-esque, with his come hither gaze and "kiss me" lips, the next he was an arrogant prick. Jenna and Toni just sat staring back and forth between the two, an amused look on their faces. Jenna had never seen Elle so bothered and unarmed by someone, she was usually so collected and...well, nice. Toni was just as surprised, he hadn't seen Gabe smile this much in a long time, let alone joke around with another woman so openly. He stared at Ellena and Gabe and thought they were just what the other needed -- he liked being right. He and Jenna began laughing quietly at the bickering duo in front of them. "Jenna, you're done right? We're leaving." "But -- dessert-" "Another time, right Toni? I'm sure you have to talk to your brother and we don't want to impose anymore." "Oh it's really not a pro-" "I have another meeting to get to anyways, sorry guys, got to run!" She grabbed her bag, leaving Jenna behind and began making her way to the door. She usually wouldn't be quite so impolite, especially to Toni and Jenna, but Gabe just brought out a different side to her. I'm not quite sure I like it, she thought. He's like the annoying boy in the schoolyard who would pull on girls' pigtails, teasing them relentlessly. That was the only way to explain why she always ended up abruptly leaving when he was around. She wanted to kick herself. She barely knew the guy and she was acting like an insecure teenage girl around him. She was just about to cross the street when she heard her name being called. Against her better judgment she stopped to turn around, as he ran to catch up. Here they were again, standing in front of each other. "Look, I'm not sorry I kissed you. Twice," he smiled, "you should just admit, you did kiss me back and I think you enjoyed it as much as I did." Her eyes widened and she was just about to tell him exactly what she thought of him before he cut her off. "Maybe I shouldn't have been so...forward. I just- there's - I would like to get to know you better. So, would you care to join me for dinner tomorrow night? I promise I'll behave." She stared up into his face unable to answer. He was doing it again, charming the pants off her, despite his previous show of arrogance. It was the first time she'd really looked at him since he walked through the doors of the restaurant. He looked like he walked out of the pages of a magazine. What was it Jenna called him? An Armani model? He was dressed in black trousers and a black button up shirt, setting off his jet black hair, which fell naturally around his face in waves. Those damn eyes, they were boring into her soul and melting her very core. If truth be told, she wanted more than anything to say yes, but she'd come this far by being so careful and that was how she intended to keep it. It'd be so easy to just finally give in, but she wouldn't risk hurting anyone else ever again. If it wasn't for her, Jesse and Adam would still be alive. She couldn't bear the pain of causing harm to someone else, even if she hardly knew Gabe, who she thought was a seriously overconfident prick anyways right? The way he was looking at her now left her so unsure. "C'mooon. It seems crazy that Toni has been trying to set us up for years, and out of nowhere we meet on a beach? That has to count for something." She shook her head to clear her brain. Tearing her eyes away from him she took a deep breath and collected herself, putting her walls back up. "Gabe, I'm sorry. I'm in a hurry now. Can I ignore you some other time?" she said while backing away. She began crossing the street to head back to her office; she turned on the other side and looked back at him, still standing there. He had a slight look of hurt on his face but it was gone before she could make more of it. With a heavy sigh she headed back to work. ---------------------------------------------------------- Gabe watched her walk away yet again. He didn't understand, she looked like she was about to say yes and then surprised him with her answer. He was finding it exceedingly frustrating that she kept refusing him. Maybe he deserved that answer after the way he'd just acted, but he was hoping she'd say yes anyways. True, he had never wanted to play along with Toni's matchmaking before, but at the time he had just ended things with Keira and was throwing himself into work full force. Things were different now. Normally he wouldn't persist if a woman said no, but he could tell Ellena was conflicted. She had wanted to say yes, he could see it in her eyes, but she refused him. Why? He intended to piece that puzzle together. Maybe he'd talk to Toni. Before he could think further on it, he felt a hand on his arm. "She just needs time. She can be stubborn as hell you know," Jenna said. "I've noticed." He turned to face her. "I have an idea, but you have to promise me something before I help you." "Of course, anything." "Elle's been through a lot in her life, don't ask me to explain, she'll tell you when she's ready, assuming you get that far," Jenna smirked, "just assure me you're not in this just to get into her pants, or to fool around with her. If you are, just walk away now." "Jenna, you obviously don't know me very well. Despite my brash behavior in there, I'm not the one-night stand kind of guy. Toni, maybe, but not me," he said laughing. "I sure hope you survive this Gabe, I kind of like you already." Poor guy, she thought, Ellena's like a slumbering dragon once you wake her up, you'd better be ready to run or fight, either way your ass is going to get burned. "We better get busy. You've got a lot to learn, oh youngling," she said, with a mischievous grin that would make the Cheshire cat proud. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 03 *Apologies for the wait! Ellena and Gabe's story has been bothering me for a while now, so I took a break and started a new project. I'm back to these two stubborn mules though. There's no sex, again. I know some people may be annoyed by that, but the chapters are pretty short and the story has been writing itself and these two just don't want to go there yet! I promise, it will be well worth the wait. Please leave comments, vote and send me feedback. I spend hours writing, fretting over every little detail. I love hearing any critiques people have to improve the story or quality of writing!* Enjoy! * Ch. 03 The Art of Persuasion Jenna threw herself onto her bed with a huge puff. She was exhausted. Between beginning to plan the wedding, work and helping Gabriel try and woo over Ellena for the past month, she hadn't been sleeping, or eating much for that matter. All she wanted right now was to curl up with Eric, maybe even have a warm bath if she could muster the energy to move. "Am I dreaming or is my fiancé actually home before I've gone to bed!" Eric said, his voice teasing as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "Mmm baby, I missed you." "Oh yeah? How much? It seems you're spending more time with Gabe than me." "If I didn't know better I'd think you were a little jealous Mr. Williams." "I'm jealous of anyone who takes my woman away from me, even if he is after Ellena. You know, maybe you're working too hard with the wrong person. She's the one that needs convincing not Gabe." Jenna stared incredulously at him. He knew how stubborn Ellena could get. Once she dug her heels into the dirt it would take a miracle to move her! It seemed Ellena was resisting everyone at the moment. "Easier said than done, baby." "What, exactly, are you two up to? You know Ellena hates surprises." There was no way she was telling Eric anything. He'd spill everything to Ellena the first chance he got. He had become so protective of her over the years, like a big brother. "Enough work talk. I'm going to run a bath, care to join me?" she winked at him over her shoulder as she made her way to the en suite bathroom. Eric watched her walk slowly to the bathroom, her hips swaying in the most delicious way. He hopped off the bed like a cat tempted by a mouse. Jenna had the water running to fill up the tub and had begun stripping out of her clothes. Eric simply watched from the doorway admiring her toned body, as his fiancé gave him a little striptease. He had to be the luckiest man alive, he thought, as his eyes raked over her full breasts, her pink nipples hard against the cold air, then down to her flat stomach and round hips, which led to her beautiful long limbs. Eric walked over to her when she finally stood completely naked in front of him, and wrapped his arms around her waist. She tilted her head up towards him and he came down for a soft kiss. His hands trailed up her back as they explored each other's mouths. Jenna let out a low moan as he bit her lower lip lightly before tracing it with his tongue. She could feel his hardness pressed against her naked skin. His hand came up to the nape of her neck cradling her head as he deepened the kiss, his desire becoming more evident by the second. Maybe skip the bath, she thought, smiling slightly. Just then she heard her phone ringing. She stiffened a bit in Eric's arms. "Leave it," he practically growled, "you can call back later, whoever it is." She was about to take his advice before she realized no one would call her this late except for Elle. She broke their embrace, much to Eric's disappointment. She could hear him groan, as she made her way towards her purse. She felt Eric behind her, pressed against her back, as she pulled her phone out of her purse and pressed the answer button. "Jenna Marie Carlton, what the HELL do you think you're playing at?" Ellena's voice shrieked through the phone. Jenna had to pull it away from her ear slightly. "What exactly are you referring to Ellena?" she replied calmly, trying not to moan as Eric wrapped his arms around her and nibbled on her earlobe. Her obvious lack of concern only seemed to anger the other girl further. "You know bloody well what I'm referring to! You gave him my number and my work address!" her voice rising in octaves. "Who?" she asked sweetly, knowing full well who Ellena was referring to. "Don't play stupid with me Jenna! You gave Gabe my number and he won't stop calling! He's even called my office! He's been sending flowers there for the past two days! It looks like a fucking florist shop! What are you two planning, exactly? Or should I say three, I know Toni is involved somehow!" Jenna had to bite her lip to keep from laughing, her friend sounded hysterical, and all over a couple of phone calls. She knew Ellena wouldn't be pleased with her once she found out she'd given Gabe her number. He'd only been asking her for it the last month. However, Jenna knew the only way to get Ellena out of her little cocoon was to overwhelm her and take some decisions out of her hands. It seemed Gabe was taking that lesson and putting it to good use. It seemed Eric was applying a similar tactic at the moment, as his hands stroked her soft breasts, teasing her nipples to a painfully hard state from behind, causing her to bite her lip hard to keep from moaning. He wasn't taking no for an answer, either. She elbowed him lightly, turning to make a face at him. "Do you realize how annoying it is, hm Jenna?" she continued, not waiting for an answer, "to be at work and getting phone calls almost every hour! To have my superiors question the ridiculous amounts of flowers which keep showing up! Then to go home and find at LEAST twenty messages! THEN to try and relax only to hear the damn trilling of this fucking phone over and over! I was about to throw it at the wall before I realized I wouldn't be able to call and tell you THANK YOU! Thank you for making my day so fan-fucking-tastic!" She couldn't hold it in anymore and she burst into peals of laughter at her friend's ridiculous anger. "Damn it Jenna, this isn't funny!" she practically whined, but she could hear the slight smile in Ellena's voice. "You're welcome," she said in between giggles as her laughter died down a bit. "You know if you would just answer the poor guy, you wouldn't have to hear the – what was it? Damn trilling of the fucking phone over and over." She heard a heavy sigh on the other end, but nothing else. "You know Ellena, its ok for you to want to be happy. You can't go on living your life the way you are. Gabe is a good place to start, he really genuinely likes you." "Jen, I think that's been made abundantly clear already, but it's not the issue. I refuse to endanger –" "Ellena, stop right there. It's been seven years and nothing has happened. Not a word or sighting of him. I think it's safe to say he won't be bothering you anymore. So, please stop using it as an excuse! You're scared I get it, but just...live a little." There was a long silence, in which Jenna thought she may have gotten through before she heard a resounding "no" on the other end. Jenna groaned at her friend's stubbornness. She could give a bull a run for its money, she thought. Before she could say anymore, Eric grabbed the phone out of her hands. "Ellena, I love you but stop being so fucking stubborn and go out with the guy, please? I'm trying to make love to my beautiful fiancé here, and I can't do that when she's worrying about you the entire time." "Eric, I – sorry," she mumbled, clearly mortified she had interrupted such a private moment between them. "I shouldn't have called this late." Jenna grabbed the phone back, giving Eric another admonishing glare before turning her attention to her friend. "Ellena, don't listen to him, you know I'm here for you whenever you need me, so is Eric. " "I'm going to try and get to bed," she finally stated, "I'm unplugging my phone too. Please Jenna, no more matchmaking. Between you and Toni...it scares me to think of the things you'll concoct!" Jenna hung up, turning to tell off her future husband for being so rude, but before she could say anything he had her in an iron grip and was kissing her until she couldn't breathe. "Now, where were we before we were interrupted?" ---------------------------------------------------------- Ellena hung up with Jenna, slightly ashamed at her outburst. She knew Jenna meant well, but sometimes she meddled a bit too much! She briefly considered changing her number, but knowing Jenna she'd just give Gabe the new one. It was a moot point anyways, she couldn't change jobs, and he would just bombard her with more calls at work. She thought back to what her friend had just said. It had been seven years. Had she just become so comfortable in the lifestyle she had built for herself that she was too scared to venture outside of it? The amount of time that had gone by without so much as a word from Jared Whitmore seemed to be a good sign, but she had quelled the urge to feel any hope a long time ago. Trying to bring it back to the forefront of her emotions now was a more difficult task than she thought it would be. She used to be so carefree, the first to jump at the opportunity to try something new. She used to be the first on the dance floor, when she went out with friends and the last to leave. Now she barely made it to work and straight back to her apartment. When did she become so damn boring? When everyone you ever cared about ended up dead, a voice said in the back of her head. Her stomach twisted in pain at the thought. Did she dare break out of her cocoon? If she knew anything about Jared, it was that he was extremely patient. He would wait idly by until someone presented him the opportunity to take what was his, yet she found herself questioning if he would wait years for her to slip up. No one could be that dedicated or obsessed towards a cause, she thought, not even Jared. If Jared had known where she was, he would have come looking a long time ago. He'd been a huge mistake in her life, one he made sure she would never forget, but maybe Jenna was right. I should just throw caution to the wind and go out with Gabriel, she thought. Even if he had acted like an ass the last few times she saw him, it couldn't hurt to see what he really had to offer. He'd been at every damn social event she went to in the last month anyways, Toni and Jenna's doing of course. Each time he'd showed up, she found herself getting angry, wanting to hit him again, but keeping herself in check. It was like they were both a walking contradiction. He was charming and a perfect gentleman when he wanted, yet he had a teasing persona that always got under her skin. She found herself missing him when he wasn't around, yet wanting to hit him when they finally came face to face. They'd both be lucky if they didn't wring each other's necks in public. She was lost deep in her thoughts when the phone rang, startling her a bit. She sighed, suddenly making a decision. Jared had taken many things from her, but she wouldn't allow him to take away anymore from her life. It was time to move on, have a little fun. One date couldn't hurt, and it would end all of Gabe's ridiculous attempts to get her attention. She decided to at least give it a shot. Glad she hadn't actually thrown her phone at the wall, she picked it up on the third ring, knowing Gabe would be on the other end. "You know Gabe, you could make a hell of a career as a debt collector," she said in an annoyed voice, before he could say anything. She heard a deep husky laugh at the other end, "How did you know it was me?" "Oh, lucky guess I suppose, a woman's intuition," she joked, her irritation melting away as she heard his laugh. "So tell me, following me all over town isn't enough, you have to call me over fifty times in one day? I'm beginning to think you're stalking me Di Sisto." She heard a booming laugh at the other end, just as there was a knock at her door, startling her a bit. Who would be here so late? She made her way to the door, looking through the peephole and barely contained a groan. Damn it Jenna, I'm going to kill you, she thought. She unlocked her door and swung it open, glaring at Gabriel Di Sisto, standing in her doorway nonchalantly, leaning against the door frame, one leg crossed over the other with that smile she had gotten to know so well. "Am I that obvious?" he laughed his eyes twinkling, "You can thank Jenna for my 'stalking' as you call it." "Trust me, she got an earful already before you called," she grumbled, resignedly stepping aside to let him in. She couldn't be rude, after all and have him standing in the hallway. No, that wouldn't do. He stepped in and looked around her small apartment. It was nicely designed and laid out. He noticed the numerous amounts of flowers he had sent her spread around her apartment, filling it with their sweet floral scent. Her living room was a mixture of modern and classic pieces of furniture. She had a whole wall of shelves spilling over to the brim with books and baubles from antique markets. This woman obviously had great taste. She had various shades of warm earthy tones around the apartment, making it feel cozy. Just off the living room was a small, yet sleek kitchen. Across from it was a small hallway, which he guessed led to her bedroom. He found himself wondering what it looked like in there, fighting down a smile. He turned to find her staring at him, her hands at her hips, and eyebrow cocked questioningly. Did women have no other stance when they were pissed off? "I'd ask you what you're doing here, and how you even know where I live, but I'm guessing the answer is Jenna." "Actually, you're wrong," he grinned as her expression turned from annoyed to shock, "The correct answer is Toni." She snorted and rolled her eyes while making her way to the sofa, mumbling, "In my world, that's essentially the same thing." "Nice flowers," he said, fighting down his laughter. "Thank you," she replied curtly, "I suppose if you must stalk, you do it in style." She was a little apprehensive at having him in her home. This was her little hideout, an escape from the world, which not many people were privy to entering. The fact that Toni knew that angered her further. She'd definitely give her friend a few choice words on the subject. On top of all of that, she was a little worried about Gabriel's actions. He was pursuing her, in every sense of the word. The calls, the flowers, showing up everywhere she went, the absolute certainty in his eyes when he said he would see her again the first time they met. He wasn't giving her a chance to breathe, and it all reminded her of the one other man who did almost the same exact things to woo her over. Gabe is different, she thought. The fact he was related to Toni, whether by blood or not, spoke volumes, she would trust that man with her life. Well, maybe not her love life, she thought wryly. She sat at the far end of her sofa and gestured for him to sit as well. He sat on the opposite end and simply gazed at her pensively. He was silent for so long, she opened her mouth to finally say something but he spoke first. "To answer your previous question, no, it's not enough to call you and see you at the occasional function. The fact is that I can't get you off of my mind and I want to take you out to dinner." He slid further down the sofa, edging his way closer to her. "However, we seem to be at an impasse. I've asked you out twice now, called you endlessly, and all to no avail." He continued sliding down the sofa. "The only option left for me was to come see you in person, away from everyone else. You can't keep ignoring me Ellena," he said in a low husky voice, as he finally closed the distance between them, "give me the chance to change your frustratingly stubborn mind." Her breath hitched as she took in the sight of him. He was so close to her no w she could feel his body heat, his face mere inches from her. She was still a little shocked he was in her apartment looking absolutely delicious as always. How could this man affect her so? She didn't even care he was here anymore, although she would never let him know it. She hadn't been able to get him off her mind either, even if he had let her. She felt his hand trail along her cheek leaving a blazing trail on her skin, his eyes boring into hers as he leaned in closer. He smelled divine, a mixture of natural musk and spice notes. It was so purely male; it was assaulting all her senses, fogging up her brain. "So, Miss Cavalieri? Is that a yes or a no?" "Yes," she breathed before she could stop herself. He leaned in the last few inches; his lips meeting hers in what he had originally intended to be a light kiss. He couldn't help himself though, once he tasted her sweet soft mouth he wanted more. His tongue began tracing her lower lip, as she moaned lightly opening her mouth to allow him to delve deeper, to taste her sweet essence. Ellena was vaguely aware of the fact that she wasn't even putting up a fight, the man seemed to know how to get through to her with a simple touch. His arms wrapped around her back pressing her closer to him, as he trailed one hand lightly up and down her spine. He deepened the kiss, leaving no part of her mouth unexplored. His kiss was sending warm shocks through her body, straight to her core; their tongues dueled for what felt an eternity before he pulled back a bit, nibbling her the tender flesh of her lips again, ending it with a small peck on her now swollen, red mouth. His forehead was leaning against hers, both their breathing heavy. "I'm sorry, what was that? I couldn't quite hear you," he teased. He'd heard her perfectly well. "I said yes, you smug ass," she growled as she pushed against his chest to put some distance between them. She found herself standing, and mentally cursing herself for letting him kiss her again. It irked her that he was in her domain yet he seemed to be in complete control of the situation, knocking down brick after brick of her perfectly constructed walls with one small touch. Her body had taken pleasure in every sweet second of it, screaming for more. She was mad at Jenna and Toni for encouraging this entire situation, at Gabe for stumbling into her world and knocking her right off her feet, but mostly herself for actually liking it – for wanting more. "Pick me up Friday at eight thirty," she managed in a steady voice. She didn't feel as calm as she sounded. If one date would get him to leave her alone, she would gladly endure it. "Now, get out, before I change my mind." He suddenly burst into laughter at the sight of her. She looked so pissed and confused, yet determined. He knew she wasn't trying to be rude by kicking him out; he had definitely overstepped the boundaries. It seemed however, that was the only way through to this unbelievably hard headed minx in front of him. "Now, Ellena, is that any way to talk to your date?" He dodged the pillow that was now flying at his face. "OUT!" She stood pointing her finger at the door, glaring down at him. Yes he had definitely gone too far. He stood, making his way to the door, chuckling to himself. "You definitely kissed me back this time. See you Friday, sugar lips." He was vaguely aware of the sound of something heavy– a shoe? – hitting the door with a heavy thud as he closed it. ---------------------------------------------------------- Gabe was walking up to Ellena's apartment, a little early but he had been restless waiting at home for the clock to strike eight thirty. He couldn't quite believe she'd finally agreed to this date. After a month of endless attempts to get her to open up just a bit, he'd been just about ready to give up. Ellena had cast a spell on him, and he couldn't seem to think about anything else. If he was a superstitious man, he would have thought her a witch. A really sexy witch. His frustration had reached critical mass at her last rejection, when she had "accidently" spilled her drink all over his suit, after he had cornered her. He and Toni were sitting in the study at their parent's home only a week ago, one of the few times Gabriel had made it to their family night, discussing her, when Toni suggested going to visit her at her apartment. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 03 "I've tried everything Toni, she's slammed the door in my face at every attempt! " Gabe yelled while slamming his hand down on the desk in front of him. "The woman is absolutely immovable; it must be so tiring to live like that every bloody day!" "Gabriel," Toni sighed, looking over at his brother, his hands touching at the fingertips and lightly tapping his mouth, "just be patient, she has a lot of barriers put up, seven years of them, and you cannot just ask her to drop them like that," he said snapping his fingers. Gabriel was standing over the desk, pacing back and forth, clearly agitated, and letting out a groan at his brother's words. It took all of Toni's willpower not to tell his brother everything, to betray Ellena's trust, in order for her to be happy. A small bad deed for the greater good, he thought. However, he knew by doing so, he would lose his friend and she would never trust him with another word. He would have to let her open up to Gabriel on her own, as she had done with him so many years ago. He knew how frustrated Gabriel was, because he had been there. He wouldn't be a man if he hadn't tried to bed Ellena during their friendship, she was a beautiful woman. It was before he knew much about her, simply thinking with his cock rather than his head. He had used all his charm to get her where he wanted when she broke down and said she couldn't do what he was asking of her. She told him about Jared, what he had done, the guilt she suffered everyday and Toni immediately felt ashamed for putting her in that position. It was that night he went from pursuer to protector. He loved Ellena, but as a much younger sister. Once she opened up, there was an entirely different woman on the other side; one he knew would match his brother's character perfectly. If he couldn't tell his brother, he would have to at least give him a head start, so to speak. "Perhaps, if you go see her?" Toni suggested innocently. "You do realize that's what I've been doing for the past month?" Gabe replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "I don't mean at social events, I mean in her domain where you won't be interrupted by others. She feels the most comfortable at home." "Toni, if you're suggesting I just show up on her doorstep and –" "That's precisely what I'm suggesting, my dear brother. That is the only way, to get her alone just the two of you, and press her. I've seen how she looks at you Gabriel, she seems to like you, but she holds herself back. Trust me, go there, and talk to her." "Toni, its one thing to pretend to coincidentally be at all the same parties and galas as she is, it's quite another to just show up unannounced on her doorstep. I can't do that, it's almost creepy." "Suit yourself, brother," Toni stood to leave, pausing at the desk and scrawling out her address on a paper and tossing it innocently in front of Gabe. "In case you change your mind." He turned and left the room, smiling to himself. Gabe stopped pacing and stared at the paper for a long time. It would be wrong to barge into her home unannounced. It would also make him look like an obsessed, needy man. He laughed to himself, he already look desperate, how much worse could it get? He was practically stalking her. I won't use it, he thought, she will give in soon, there's no need for it. He began to walk out of the room, before pausing and turning back to the table and pocketing her address. It can't hurt to keep it in hand, he thought. After a week of continuous calls, and flowers, he gave in. He searched through his pants and found the small slip of paper and made his way to her apartment, not having a care in the world what she thought of him anymore. She was driving him mad, each refusal only making him more determined to change her mind. To his surprise, his brother had been right, and here he was picking her up for their first date. He made his way up the two flights of stairs to her door and took a deep breath before he knocked. He heard the light tapping of heels, the bolt on the door being unlocked and then the door swung open. His breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight of the woman who had denied him repeatedly for over a month. It took all his will power not to take her right then and there on the floor of her apartment. She had her hair styled in loose waves around her face, it shone like silk. Her beautiful chocolate eyes were highlighted by her perfectly applied makeup. Her lips looked deliciously plump and pink; he wanted to taste them again. Her body was draped in a silk forest green one shoulder, mid thigh length dress which hugged her curves in all the right places; the colour offset her skin beautifully. Her feet were clad in the sexiest black strappy stilettos. "Hey," she smiled shyly, clearly aware of his obvious appraisal of her body. Her smile almost knocked him off his feet. Dear God, this woman was gorgeous! He wanted to leap in the air with joy at finally having her to himself for the night. "You look absolutely stunning Ellena," he breathed. Her cheeks flushed slightly, "Thank you Gabriel, you don't look too bad yourself," she smiled. He had worn a grey suit, minus the tie, and a black button up shirt. He'd left the first few buttons undone, allowing his tanned skin to peak out. He leaned forward and gave her a light kiss on the cheek, her scent intoxicating him, a mix of jasmine and lilies filling his nostrils. "Shall we?" he asked, holding his arm out as she linked her arm around his. It was a quiet walk to the car, as he helped her in, trying to keep it together as his gaze fell on her gorgeous bronze legs as she maneuvered her way into the passenger seat. He had to mentally shake himself, he felt like a confused teenager. He was always so confident around women, and yet this one simply had to put on a nice dress and smile at him and he could barely think or move. He settled into the driver's seat and started the car, weaving his way through traffic. He glanced over at Ellena every now and then, wondering if he was dreaming. She seemed a little tense, and she wasn't speaking. It wasn't a heavy silence, but he wanted to hear her voice. He glanced over again and caught her looking at him, then looking away smiling shyly. He chuckled lightly. "So, I have to ask," he began, looking over at her briefly, "what exactly was it you threw at the door the other night?" Her cheeks flushed lightly as she mumbled, "A book." "It sounded like a heavy book," he said chuckling. "It was Gone with the Wind," she said with a sheepish grin. "Ouch. I feel sorry for the door." They both burst out laughing, Ellena's eyes tearing up a bit. It had been the closest book to her at the time, and also the thickest. Once their laughter died down again, they drove in silence for a while longer. "You haven't asked where we're going yet." She smiled, her face brightening, causing his heart to jump, "Where are we going?" He noticed her voice was a little shaky. She must be as nervous as me, he thought. "It's a surprise, although I have a feeling you'll love it." That seemed to pique her interest, as she turned to him a questioning look in her eyes. He simply grinned at her and focused on the road. They drove in silence until he heard a light gasp as he turned onto a side street and Mayana came into view. It was one of the best Salsa and Dance clubs in the city. Toni assured him that it would be perfect, that Ellena loved to dance, and that she had attended a dance academy when she was younger. "I was told that you're quite the dancer Miss Cavalieri, care to prove me right?" he had a wide grin on his face, and a playful look in his eyes. A loud laugh escaped her, a genuine laugh; her eyes were shining in amusement. She had not felt like this in a long time. She was excited and dare she say, looking forward to the night. "Let's just see if you can keep up," she teased. They parked and made their way inside the club. The large room was filled with dancers, moving to the rhythm of the music. The high ceilings gave the area a feeling of openness. Surrounding the main room were smaller areas separated by partitions, each area set with plush white couches and large pillows. Glass tables were placed in the center with flowers set in large vases. Bottles of liquor were placed in large tin containers filled with ice. The lights were dimmed, and set in warm colours of gold, dark purples and reds. The room looked rich and most definitely a place where people enjoyed themselves. He took off his blazer, grabbed her purse and set them behind the bar, exchanging a few words with the bartender, before making his way back. "Let's go twinkle toes," he grinned, holding out his hand. She let out a loud candid laugh and took his hand and they made their way through the crowd. He grasped her hands and began taking a few steps. She was a little nervous, and it took them both a while to get used to each other as partners, to trust each other. Gabe felt her resisting a little. He suddenly pulled her close so she was pressed up against the length of his body and whispered in her ear, "Stop resisting Ellena, just let go, enjoy yourself." Ellena's breath hitched in her throat as his hot breath whispered in her ear. He released her again and began leading them; all the while his eyes were locked on hers. She let the music fill her, let the beat of the drums reverberate through her body and the rhythm to wash over. She felt laughter bubble up from her, she felt like she had come home. His arms were strong as they held her; she could feel his power as they danced. She was astonished at how skilled he was. Soon they were dancing like one; she was surprised at how naturally they fell into it once she loosened up a bit. He had her twirling and sliding, moving swiftly across the dance floor. He raised her arm and she twisted in a double pirouette before he tugged her towards him, her back thumping against his chest as his hand fanned out to rest on her abdomen, as they swayed their hips to the rhythm, their bodies practically glued together. He twirled her again, before pulling her back towards him, this time she let her leg wrap around his waist as she tilted away from him in a backwards dip, as he turned them in a semi circle. Just as suddenly he shifted them so that she was almost lying horizontally in his arms, the only thing keeping her from hitting the floor were his arms. Her toes were barely holding her weight as her legs extended as far out as she could push them. He held her, one hand running up her back, sending shivers down her spine. Damn he's good, she thought. She felt her body react, moistening at his touch. "Did I mention you look ravishing tonight?" "You may have mentioned it once," she practically gasped, as his hand made its way down her hip to her leg, as he hooked it over his waist, bringing their bodies closer together. Ever nerve ending in her body seemed to wake up at that moment, tingling with anticipation. He was looking at her with such a passionate gaze; she thought he might take her there on the dance floor. A part of her almost wished he would. Before she could think further on what she wanted him to do however, another couple bumped into them and he lost his grip on her, both of them falling to the ground. He landed on top of her barely having enough time to keep his weight from crushing her. The passionate moment gone, yet they were both laughing boisterously at each other. He pulled her back up, both a little embarrassed at having fallen, but they were dancing again, with only their hands touching. She smiled to hide her confusion. One moment they were practically fucking on the dance floor, next they were back to normal. She needed a drink, their dance and look in his eyes were a little too passionate for her, after years of holding back. She told him she was going to the ladies room, and began making her way through the crowd. She located it and stood in front of the mirror, gripping at the sink with both hands, staring at herself, as flocks of women stumbled in. Her skin was glowing, flushed from the dancing. Her eyes were wide; as if her own body was shocked she was actually out dancing tonight. As much as she missed it, dancing with Gabe was a little overwhelming for her. She knew she should expect it, at a salsa club, but she wasn't prepared for the fact that she would want him so much. The second he touched her, she threw out every reason or excuse as to why he shouldn't. Was it just because she had been alone for so long, or did she genuinely see something in Gabe that she hadn't seen in other men? She puffed out a long sigh. "You need to loosen up Ellena," she told her reflection in the mirror. "Girl, ask Georgie at the bar for an Adios, that'll loosen you right up!" the girl next to her said. She blushed, realizing she had actually spoken out loud. She looked up at the girl next to her and smiled. She was fussing over herself but looked at Ellena through her reflection in the mirror. She was gorgeous. She had light brown hair with golden highlights expertly put in. It was long, wavy and cascaded down her flawless back, which was exposed in a backless dress. She had almond shaped green eyes and lips most women tried to achieve using Botox, or whatever it was women injected themselves with these days. She was dancing in her spot, the music penetrating through the walls. She looked like she was having a good time herself. "Thanks," she laughed, remembering the drink's name as she turned to leave. Before she left though, she paused at the door and blurted out, "I'm actually headed there now; can I buy you a drink?" she asked, surprised at herself. The woman seemed like fun, and she wanted to thank her for the suggestion. She didn't over think it; Jenna said to have fun, so she was going to do just that. Wasn't meeting new people a part of that process? She had recognized the wild streak in this woman immediately. "Well, I never say no to a free drink! I'm Keira by the way," she smiled, turning to face Ellena, extending her hand. "Ellena," she smiled back, shaking her hand. They made their way from the ladies room to the bar, Ellena ordering the drinks. They watched the bartender mixing their beverage. Whatever the Adios was, it definitely wasn't meant for lightweights. Ellena saw vodka, rum, tequila, gin, Curacao, some sort of mix and a splash of sweet soda go into two glasses. The bartender set the two glasses in front of them and Keira took hers holding it out, gesturing Ellena should do the same. "I said loosen up, not come apart Keira," she said eyeing the drink skeptically. "Trust me, you'll thank me once you've tasted it," she replied eyeing the drink eagerly before chugging it down. Not to be outdone, Ellena began drinking hers down. It burned her throat, but warmed her from the inside out as it made its way down. Definitely loosens you up, she thought. The both slapped their glasses down on the bar at the same time. "So what are you doing here? And what do you need loosening up for?" she asked conversationally, gesturing to the bartender for another round. "Oh, I'm on a date," she replied, remembering she had left Gabe out on the dance floor. "What are you doing here then?" "I just...needed a break. Got tired, too much dancing," she replied, gazing around the room for him. The look Keira gave her, told her she wasn't buying it. "Is he hot?" "Smoking," she replied with a wide smile, turning her attention back to the stunning woman before her. "Well what are you doing here buying me a drink girlie? Go seduce your man and get your freak on!" "I needed some liquid courage, before I get to that point," she replied drolly. Their drinks were served again and they held them up clinking glasses. "To getting laid tonight!" Keira practically yelled over the music. She snorted, before taking a long sip of her drink. She's definitely not boring, Ellena thought. She was about to thank Keira for the drinks as well as the company , so she could take her advice and excuse herself to go find Gabe, when she heard a shocked and angry voice to her right. "Keira?" Both women turned to find Gabe staring in surprise, looking back and forth between Ellena and his ex. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 04 Hello darlings! I have FINALLY gotten the chance to edit and tweak this chapter after a very, very, verrrrrry long hiatus. I apologize for that, as a reader I know how frustrating it can be when authors don't finish a story, or have long wait times between posts. I will try to be more frequent with posts, but life does come in the way sometimes! Anyways, I hope you enjoy this chapter of Adonis! Just a bit of a warning, it is a bit of a darker chapter, and a small violent scene takes place. I hope you all like this chapter, and please do continue to message, email and comment! It encourages me to write more, and frankly whoops my ass into shape when ya'll yell at me to finish the next chapter!  Enjoy! E Chapter 4: Ellena stared at Gabe, not quite recognizing the man standing before her. His eyes were burning a hole into Keira's head; his entire body was stiff with rage. The teasing, passionate man of a few minutes ago had completely vanished. "You know her?" she asked looking back and forth between him and Keira. He ignored her question. "What the fuck are you doing here Keira?" She began laughing hysterically, taking deep breaths to steady herself. "Oh this is just too good to be true!" she crooned, "You must be Ellena's date!" The friendly demeanor Keira had previously expressed with Ellena immediately slipped and in its place was a woman who looked cruelly back at her. What the hell was going on here? Why did Gabe have murder in his eyes and why was Keira all of a sudden hostile towards her? "Would one of you care to explain what exactly is going on?" "Shall I do the honours, or would you like the pleasure of telling her about our oh-so-tragic tale?" she asked Gabe cruelly. He simply glared at her, the fury in his eyes warning her not to open that bag of bones. He didn't want Ellena to be subjected to this, didn't want her tainted by Keira's malice. She of course ignored him completely and continued speaking. "Gabriel and I used to be engaged, that is until he caught me sleeping with his best friend," she laughed haughtily, as if announcing the proudest achievement of her life. "I'm a walking cliché, what I can say...Kyle was just too delicious to ignore, and let's face it I was never the domestic type. I'm surprised to see you out Gabby, I thought you were still pining over me," she said in a sickly sweet voice, her lips pouting. "I would rather have my balls cut off with a dull knife than even contemplate getting back with you Keira," he spat. "My, my, what a temper we've developed," she continued laughing, the sound beginning to grate on Ellena's nerves. "Ellena, grab your purse, we're leaving." She was about to protest, not wanting some ex of his ruin the night, but the look he gave her told her not to argue. She turned, asked the bartender to hand her bag and Gabe's jacket, downing the rest of her drink, because God knew she needed it, before hopping off the bar stool she had been sitting in. "Bye Ellena," Keira's voice sang, her fingers wiggling a goodbye gesture. Gabe grabbed Ellena by the arm and began dragging her out of the club, his face twisted with rage. She stumbled a few times in her heels, unable to keep up with his long, fast strides. He didn't notice. Once they were outside, she wrenched her arm free of his grasp. "I can walk on my own thank you," she said coldly, pissed that the night had turned so sour. Just my luck, she thought, the one fucking night I decide to test the waters, it gets ruined by a bitchy ex. Her cold demeanor seemed to snap him back to where he was. His face softened a bit as he looked at her. "I'm sorry Ellena, I was just caught off guard," he sighed running his hands through his hair, "She just...brings out the worst in me," his face held a tight smile, "Did I hurt you?" he asked, tenderly lifting her arm. "I'm fine," she shrugged him off, "can we just go?" she asked, continuing the walk to the car. This was such a big mistake. She had been excited at first, but the night had turned into a whirlwind of emotions she most definitely did not seem ready to face. Throw in a bitter ex and a doubly bitter date and the night had turned out just peachy. It was a bloody soap opera, she thought, almost laughing at the thought. It was too bad really, she had liked Keira, in the brief interaction she had with the woman. That was until she did a complete one eighty and adopted the title of Gabe's ex. She had reminded her of herself years ago, entertaining and uninhibited. She was walking fast, trying to reach the car, eager to get back to her apartment, when her heel caught in a small crack in the pavement and she went flying forwards. Gabe tried to catch her but he was just a fraction of a second too late, and she hit the pavement palms first, her knees dragging painfully against the rough ground. "Fuck," she huffed struggling to get up, when a pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist and lifted her. "Jesus Ellena, slow down. Are you okay?" he asked worriedly, letting her go and crouching down to check her knees. She felt like crying right there. She felt embarrassed and confused. What a fucking mess! Why did she even care? She didn't even want to go out on a date, all month she had been resisting. Sure, she had actually enjoyed herself briefly, and had felt an attraction to the man in front of her, but the incident with Keira had completely thrown her off course. Keira had cheated on Gabriel. The moment the other woman had said that, Ellena's heart dropped to her stomach. What would he say when he learned she had done the very thing that he despised about his ex, and that it had ultimately led to the death of her own fiancé. It shouldn't matter anyways, she thought, this whole night just proves I'm so not the girl for Gabe. There was no future for them, she was too fucked up, and he had his own demons to deal with, that much was obvious. So why was she so upset that it had been ruined? She should feel happy; it gave her the excuse she needed to curl back up into her cocoon and keep everyone at bay. She had been resisting Gabe so much, she hadn't really thought about how she could feel if she allowed him in. The small glimpse she had tonight had confused the hell out of her, but it had thrilled her all the same. It hit her then that maybe she didn't want that anymore. She realized then that this was what she feared the most. She knew she would feel something for Gabriel the moment she met him, and she had used her past as an excuse to stay away. She recognized now that although she did fear Jared's ominous promise, she feared Gabe's rejection even more. He was sure to reject her when he found out the truth. She winced and sucked in a sharp breath as Gabe touched her knee, bringing her out of her thoughts. She looked down and saw both her knees were raw and bleeding, the skin pulled off roughly, small bits of gravel embedded in places. The stinging in her palms told her they had received similar treatment. She fought the tears that were threatening to spill over. He had taken his blazer and began dabbing the blood trickling down her leg. "Gabe no, you'll ruin your jacket!" "You're bleeding Ellena, screw the jacket...It really is a shame – such beautiful legs," he looked up at her, adopting his usual suave charm, "Come on," he said rising, putting an arm around her and gently leading her to the car. Each step sent a sharp pain down her legs and she gasped, holding her breath. He stopped, noticing her pain and picked her up in his arms. She shrieked in surprise, but he ignored her and kept walking. "Put your arms around me, it'll make it easier," he said quietly. "I'll ruin your shirt, my hands are bl-" He let out a huff, "I could care less about the shirt Ellena," his eyes were boring into hers, and she found herself wrapping her arms around his neck. God he smelled amazing, she thought resting her head against his chest. What was wrong with her! She shouldn't be thinking like this, not after everything that happened. When they reached the car he set her down, and opened the door as she got in. She unhooked the clasp on her heels and took them off, not wanting to risk another fall when she walked up to her apartment. Gabe stepped in next to her and started the car. They sat in silence, both lost in their own thoughts, until she realized he wasn't headed towards her apartment. "Where are we going? This isn't the way home." "Yes it is, we're going to my place," he said matter-of-factly. "But-" "You're hurt Ellena, I have the necessary supplies at home to clean your wounds and bandage them. You're not going home until I'm satisfied you're ok." His tone brooked no argument. She grunted, "What are you a doctor or something?" "Actually, yes I am. I'm surprised Toni never mentioned it to you." She stared at him astounded. Will the wonders never cease? She thought. A doctor who could salsa, and looked like the human incarnation of Adonis himself. She realized she didn't know much about Gabriel Di Sisto. In everyone's effort to push them together they forgot to offer her any information on the man. She wondered what he knew about her. "He told me you're an architect," he said as if reading her mind, glancing over at her. She simply nodded her head. He was avoiding the topic of Keira by steering the conversation around to her. Before she could bring it up, they pulled into a drive way of a beautiful townhome, minutes away from the central core of downtown. She struggled to get out of the car, the blood on her knees having dried a bit, cracked open again. Gabe had her in his arms again before she knew what was happening. He strode up the stairs as if she weighed nothing, unlocked the door, rather awkwardly and pulled them into a dark hallway. He switched on a light and closed the front door with his foot. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the sudden brightness, but they came into focus just as he set her down on the kitchen counter. The kitchen was nicely sized, clean and modern with stainless steel appliances and dark granite counter tops. It opened into a sitting room, which was decorated in dark leather sofas, glass tables, black and white artwork along the walls. It screamed bachelor pad but as modern as it was, it still felt warm and inviting. He had a large exposed brick wall and wood beams throughout the apartment, which gave it the right amount of warmth and charm. She turned and watched Gabe pull a box from a drawer and set it down next to her. He opened it and began fiddling with various ointments, bandages and cotton swabs. He pulled out a pair of tweezers that looked far too pointy to be around an open wound. She hated anything to do with hospitals, even simple things like bandages; too many painful memories. The irony that Gabe was a doctor hit her then. He looked up at her and saw the slight panic in her eyes. "Not afraid of a pair of tweezers, are we?" he asked, teasing her again. "No," she said, barely convincing herself. He chuckled. "I would never hurt you Ellena," he said seriously, his honey eyes penetrating hers, "Now, sit back and relax while the doctor works his magic." "It seems every time I'm around you I end up hurt." "I had nothing to do with Josh's horrible aim, and definitely had no hand in your fall, that was all you." She rolled her eyes, but leaned back, so her arms were supporting her. She winced immediately, forgetting her palms were just as torn up. She began apologizing profusely for getting blood on his counters, but he simply rolled his eyes. He looked up from her knees, reaching for her hands and turned them gently in his. "Those heels were sexy as hell Ellena...but maybe learn how to walk in them first next time," he said while scrutinizing her hands, then beginning to work on them, pulling out small bits of gravel. "The ground was uneven," she snapped, his teasing beginning to annoy her. The corners of his mouth twitched slightly, but he didn't reply, merely focused on her hand. When he pulled the last bit of gravel, he soaked a cotton pad with an antiseptic and wiped her palms, she hissed as the fluid stung, causing her to pull her hands back. "Will you stop being such a baby," he said exasperated, pulling her hands back towards him. She glared back at him. He finished cleaning the cuts and spread some sticky ointment on them before wrapping them in a thin bandage. I look like a boxer, she thought, maybe I should throw a couple of punches; his ego could use some bruising. Quelling the urge to hit him, she contented herself with the thought that if she wanted to, she could cause considerable damage to his pretty face. He was bending over her knees and beginning the process over again. If she thought her palms were painful, her knees were a whole other ball park. The gravel had imbedded deeper into her skin with the force of the fall. She felt the coldness of the tweezers digging into her skin, pulling the bits out. She ground her teeth together to keep from groaning. "So why did you become an architect?" he asked, trying to take her mind off the pain. "Actually, it was your father that suggested it to me...I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life when I moved here. I didn't know much aside from dance, but realistically, the chances of making it big as a dancer were slim," she smiled wryly. "Oh I don't know about that Twinkle Toes...you danced beautifully," he practically whispered gazing up at her, his fingers trailing behind her knee. She sucked in a breath, his touch was so light but it sent tingles across her body. She bit her lip and looked away before she lost herself in those deep honey eyes. She heard him chuckle and then resume bandaging her knee. "I saw your parents home," she continued as if he hadn't just ignited a new fire within her, "it's a piece of art, and I learned he had designed it. He showed me all the drawings. I don't know why but it spoke to me, and I found myself drawing, designing my own 'dream home', he saw my sketches and suggested I try enrolling in an architecture program. The rest is history." "Knowing my father, he didn't just suggest, he probably enrolled you without your knowledge and told you the day before classes started." She laughed at his accurate guess, Dario Moretti usually got his way, and in her case, she was glad he had. "Is Keira the reason you never wanted to meet me?" she asked suddenly. He sighed, finishing up her leg and putting away everything into the tin box before turning to face her, "It doesn't matter why, we've met already, and I'm kicking myself for not listening to Toni sooner...Don't tell him I said that though," he added after a pause. "If I remember correctly, you did not want anything to do with me either," he joked "If it doesn't matter, why did you get so angry back there?" she pushed, not sure why, he obviously didn't want to talk about Keira. Maybe the alcohol she had was making her mouth move faster than her brain could think. "Just leave it Ellena. She is not someone I associate with any more, nor do I wish to." "She seems to want to 'associate' with you, though," she said before she could stop herself. What was wrong with her? Why was she all of a sudden worried he was still hung up on Keira. Why did it hurt to think of them together, when she herself did not want to meet Gabe when Toni suggested it? "Drop it Ellena!" he yelled, his anger sparking as he ran his hand through his hair and turned his back to her. She was taken aback slightly, his demeanor reminded her of Jared when he got angry. Oh stop it Ellena, she thought to herself, not everyman is comparable to that asshole. "Sorry..." she whispered. They sat in silence for a moment before she figured the night was probably over now and hopped off the counter; surprised she wasn't in pain anymore. Her wounds felt slightly numb. Must be the ointment he used, she thought. She grabbed her heels and began making her way to the door and managed to get it halfway open, before a hand came from behind her and slammed it shut. She felt him close behind her, trapping her in between him and the door. "Where do you think you're going?" he growled behind her ear. "Home," she stated, as if it should be obvious. "And how exactly were you planning on getting there?" he asked, a hint of annoyance creeping into his tone. "I was going to call a taxi, so if you'll excuse me..." she tried opening the door again, but he held it firmly shut. "Gabe, let me out. This night has already turned into enough of a disaster, there's no need to prolong it by spending another second together driving me home!" Her voice had grown slightly panicky, and he wondered why she looked so terrified. Perhaps he was acting foolish, but he didn't think he warranted the look on her face. "Ellena," he sighed, "I'm sorry. Like I said, she just doesn't bring out the best in me. I'm sorry I let it ruin the night, I'm also sorry I just lost my temper with you, you didn't deserve that. Let me drop you off at home, make sure you're ok." When she didn't answer, he wrapped an arm around her waist and turned her around to face him. She stared at his chest, not wanting to look into his face. He ran a finger along her jaw before tilting her head up so she would look him in the eyes. He looked sad, his eyes screaming an apology. "Please..." "Fine." She pulled out of his embrace and turned around, flung the door open and made her way towards the car. She could hear him sigh heavily, before quickly grabbing his keys and following her. She tried to calm her breathing before he caught up with her. That scenario was eerily close to one that had left her destroyed years ago, causing her to panic slightly. She shook her head, she was being stupid and she knew it. Gabriel was not Jared, she repeated to herself. He would never do what that pig had done to her. As much as she wanted to pursue anything with Gabe, she realized tonight that would be too painful for both of them. She had agreed to one date, and that date was now over. She would not be seeing Gabriel Di Sisto after tonight. He was in too much pain from Keira, it was obvious. She had too much baggage, baggage she did not want to drop on an already hurting man. No, it would be better this way. Besides, if he ever learned the truth, he'd leave without so much as a glance back at her, and that thought was more painful than her ending whatever it was they shared at the moment. As they drove towards her apartment, he attempted to open up several conversations, but Ellena kept shutting each one down with a short remark, and he eventually gave up. She stared ahead of her, every muscle in her body stiff. Once he parked in front of her building, she opened the door and started heading up the stairs to the main entrance. She heard his car door slam and his heavy footsteps behind her, but she didn't turn around. "What the fuck is your problem Ellena?" he said loudly, trying to reign in his temper. "Why won't you let anyone in? I've been practically groveling at your damn feet for a month; everyone is hell-bent on us being together, except you! You brush everything off like its nothing, like people's feelings aren't involved!" His voice was steadily getting louder as he yelled at her back. "So I didn't want to talk about my ex the first night we went out! Can you really blame me? I finally get you to say yes to me and the entire night goes to shit because of that woman, so forgive me for trying to keep her from further poisoning our night." She stood frozen in her spot as he vented at her, she could practically feel the waves of his rage hitting her back, but she didn't turn around. She knew he was right, she was acting foolish, and he had every right not to discuss his past relationships. She didn't want to look in his eyes and melt as she did every single time she looked into them. She didn't want to hurt him anymore. If this whole thing ended now, at the first bloom of their relationship, it would save both of them a lot of trouble down the line. She already felt strongly for him, and he seemed to reciprocate those feelings, and they hadn't even begun to explore them fully. If it was like this now, how would it feel a month from now? It all seemed too much for her, too soon. Her instincts were to shut down, put up her walls again, with double the mortar. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 04 She pulled herself up, drew her shoulders back and put on her mask, closing off all emotion from her face and turned around. He was angry, she could see that, but he also seemed defeated. His shoulders had slumped a bit when he saw her face. "Why won't you let me in Ellena? Why won't you let yourself feel? I've seen a glimpse of the woman you could be if you just opened up to the world. You were different tonight..." She didn't know what to say to him. She just stood there, as he spoke to her. How was she supposed to tell him that she was scared to feel anything for anyone because the last time she had done so, she almost died in the process. She had put her trust in a man she thought she loved, and he had abused that love in the most heinous way. How could she explain that 'feeling' made you stupid? It didn't allow you to see clearly, it clouded your judgment and led to unintelligent decisions. It had led her to where she was now. She had been foolish to love Jared Whitmore, when she had Adam, who had devoted himself to her. He had promised her the world, yet she wouldn't love him back, had grown bored of their relationship. She went searching for adventure and she found it all in Jared and she had fallen head over heels for him. She had been so blind, she didn't see him for what he was, a manipulator, someone after his own needs. He didn't love her, he lusted after her. She had been young and foolish, unable to distinguish between the two. She didn't realize she already had love, just not the kind she thought she wanted. It had been too late by then. Adam had died, and she had been damaged beyond a hope of ever recovering again. Her sister had died trying to stand up for her and protect her, when she couldn't protect herself. So how did she explain all this to Gabriel? Where did she even begin? She was too tired, too weary to open up such a deep wound out here on the street. So she opted for her next best option. "I'm incapable of feeling Gabriel, I'm not the woman you think I am..." she paused for a moment, "I'm used goods Gabe, I'm damaged beyond the hope of repair and you deserve someone...so much better. This was a huge mistake." He growled in frustration, what the hell was she talking about? He made to turn around and leave, but paused mid step before striding over to her in two long steps before he pushed her up against the wall, one arm wrapped around her waist, the other gripping at the nape of her neck, his body pressed up against her, leaving no part untouched. "You don't look damaged to me. I know you feel something for me Ellena, I've seen it. I will make you feel," he growled in her ear as she struggled against him. He tightened his grip on the back of her neck, curling his fingers in her hair and tilting her head up as his lips came crushing down hard on hers. He crushed himself against her. His kiss was furious, all his anger flowing into it, as he ground his lips against hers, his tongue seeking access to her mouth, relentlessly pushing into her. She tried her hardest to resist, but her body reacted to him instantly, betraying her. It was as if the flood gates opened, and she found herself kissing him back with equal vigour. All her instincts were telling her to stop this, to run, but her body refused to listen. Instead she wrapped her arms around his neck, her heels still dangling from her fingertips. She didn't understand how this man could break though her barriers, but he did. He felt her response and drew her tongue into his mouth and sucked on it hard, drawing a moan from her, all the while his body pushed into hers, showing her exactly how much he wanted her. He grabbed her legs and wrapped them around his waist, pushing her back into the wall, his hands running along her thighs, gripping her ass before trailing along her back. Her chest was rising and falling, rubbing against his chest, her nipples hard and pushing through the material of her dress. He brought his fingers to her hair as he clenched and unclenched in her long tresses, as her arms were holding onto him for dear life. They didn't seem to care they were on the street, in front of her building where anyone could see them. Both were lost in their emotions, pouring the last month of struggle and tension into this one kiss. He nibbled on her lips before running his tongue over the bite; He began kissing his way down her neck, finding sensitive spots she never knew she had. He worked his way back up to her ear, nipping it lightly, drawing a gasp from her, before returning to her luscious lips, slowing the kiss. He drew his tongue languidly along her lips, reveling in their softness. He gave her a small peck, leaning his forehead against hers, trying to control his heavy breathing, as she too fought to control hers. "I told you, you could feel," he breathed. "Let me down," she whispered, looking away from him. He stiffened for a moment, before releasing her legs and setting her down. She was a little unsteady on her feet, but managed to stay up. She wouldn't look at him. "Ellena," he said, a warning in his voice, trying to tell her not to run from him. "I'm sorry Gabe..." she turned away from him, walking into her building, leaving him staring at her back yet again. What he couldn't see were the tears streaming down her face. She didn't know how she ended up in her apartment, only that the minute she walked through the door she let out the breath she was holding. She was gasping for air, trying to gulp down as much as she could in short shallow gasps. He had quite literally taken her breath away. She closed her eyes and slid down to the floor, letting out a frustrated scream. She could just tell Gabriel everything. She could simply tell him the truth, that she had cheated on her fiancé, with a very powerful and charming man, only to find out he was a possessive asshole who put her in the hospital for months and in the process had taken away the two most important people in her life. He had promised her he would find her one day and finish the job he started. Telling Gabe that would be easy, she had done it after all with Jenna and Toni. It was his reaction she feared more. She knew he would turn her away. She was no better than Keira, and she had seen the look of disgust on his face when he had seen her in the club tonight. She couldn't bear him staring at her that way. Because as much as she denied it in the past few months, she had begun to care for Gabe slowly; secretly enjoying his pursuit. She had pulled on every last shred of willpower she had to tear herself away from him just now. It was for the best. She would not bring him down into this mess; he was too good for that. --- Gabe didn't know how long he stood there, he was livid. Keira hadn't been there by coincidence. The bitch had been following him around since he broke off the engagement almost two years ago. She was like a cockroach he couldn't crush, she kept popping up everywhere. It had taken all his energy to keep from throttling her as she sat there talking and drinking with Ellena, pretending to be so friendly. The night had gone from bad to worse. He had inadvertently pushed Ellena away without realizing what he was doing. He wanted to get away from Keira, but in the process he had given his anger control and Ellena had been on the receiving end of that rage. She practically ran from him, and hurt herself in the process. When she had questioned him about Keira he let his anger get in the way once again. The woman was poison, even when she wasn't around; her name was like a curse. He knew, initially, that he had to tread carefully with Ellena, that it would be difficult for her to relax on the date. He was right; she didn't really relax until they were dancing. He groaned, remembering how her body curved against his, igniting his arousal like a wild fire. That had been nothing compared to the kiss they just shared. He had wanted to take her upstairs and make her his in no uncertain terms. She had pulled away though, and it brought him back to his senses like a bucket of ice water. He figured he could salvage whatever was left of the night during the ride to her apartment, be she had shut down completely. He hated the cold look she had on her face when she turned to him; she looked like she was empty, devoid of any emotion. It was such a contradiction to the woman he had danced with mere hours ago. He could understand her being upset, but why did she completely close herself off? Surely it hadn't been that bad? Aside from Keira and her falling, they had enjoyed themselves. He had definitely felt their strange relationship plant a few more roots in the ground. Every time they grew a little bit closer, she would try and pull away instantly. He thought of the first time he met her on the beach, she had run away from him after he kissed her – twice. Granted, that was strange behavior even for him, but there was something about her, he just couldn't help himself. She kicked him out when he had kissed her again in her apartment. Tonight, she did the same. What the hell was she so afraid of? He knew she felt the same attraction, it was undeniable, yet still she held back. He turned and got in his car, determined to get answers. He was fed up, frustrated and fuming at the fact Keira had managed to ruin the one chance he had with Ellena. He hoped Toni was home, and if he wasn't, he would wait for him. He pulled up to Toni's home ten minutes later, noticing the lights were off. He sighed and made his way up the steps, sitting down to wait for his brother. He sat there in a daze, thinking of how he came to be here. He cursed the day Keira came into his life. She had wrapped herself around his heart, and then wrenched it out without a care in the world. How had he been so blind, to be so close to marrying someone, only to realize they were not the person you thought them to be? Keira, he learned, was a manipulator, an actress of the best kind, and was only after the family fortune. She had a perfectly constructed façade, but deep down she was a cruel and selfish woman. He remembered the day he had caught her in her lies; how he had felt seeing her making love to another man, someone he had considered his best friend. He had been away at a conference on the newest medical treatments for burn victims. Ironically, the venue the conference was to take place caught fire, and it was cut short into its second day, and rescheduled for later in the month. He packed his bags and flew back home. He wanted to surprise Keira with his early return, they hadn't been spending a lot of time together, both busy with work. Gabe unlocked the front door and set his small suitcase in the foyer. The house seemed quiet, but Keira's car was in the driveway. He looked around the small first floor of the townhouse, but she wasn't there. She must be upstairs, he thought. He made his way upstairs, a smile on his face, excited to surprise his beautiful fiancé. Once he reached the platform of the second floor however, he faltered. He heard a husky laugh followed by a loud moan. He knew that moan; he had caused it many times when he made love to Keira. He walked quietly to their room, and found the door slightly ajar, the view to the bed clear. What he saw there had him frozen in place, unable to take his eyes off of the scene in front of him. Keira lay spread eagled and naked, touching her own breasts, tweaking her nipples between her fingers. A man was buried in between her legs, his fingers thrusting in and out of his fiancé's pussy while he sucked on her clit. She was writhing in pleasure, before the man stopped suddenly and pulled her down the bed towards him, grabbing her legs from behind the knees, and throwing them over his shoulders, raising her hips off the bed before slamming his cock into her in one long hard stroke. The both moaned in pleasure. The moment his head had left Keira's pussy, Gabe recognized him. His heart dropped further down into his stomach. Kyle. Kyle was fucking his fiancé. He stood there shocked and continued to watch his best friend ram his cock into Keira repeatedly, drawing louder moans from her. Their bodies were glistening in sweat, both so deep in the heat of the moment; neither of them noticed Gabe standing behind the door, watching it all unfold in front of him. Kyle picked up the pace; sliding his cock into Keira's sopping wet pussy faster and harder, the sound of their skin meeting echoing in the room; His hand coming down between them massaging her clit in firm strokes. "Kyle, I'm gonna come, baby," Keira panted with each thrust. Just as she said it, her body stiffened and then began shuddering, her pussy quivering on his cock, throwing him over the edge, and he came inside her with a load groan, spurting his thick hot cum into her shuddering hole. They both collapsed onto the bed, breathing hard. Keira stretched her body underneath him, looking completely satiated. Her head rocked to the side, and she noticed a movement at the door, before her eyes locked onto Gabe's. She froze, as he pushed the door open all the way. "Gabe," she whispered. "I told you; don't say his name while you're with me Keira. You're mine when we're together," Kyle said beside her, his eyes closed. "Yours?" Gabe said, his voice coming out rough. Kyle sat up immediately, as if a puppeteer had pulled him by the strings. It was almost comical, had the situation not been so serious. "Gabe, man..." "How long?" he choked. Keira merely looked at him, no sign of remorse in her face and proudly stated, "A little over eight months." "Eight months..." He stared dazed back and forth between the two, no one moving, "Eight fucking months!" he suddenly bellowed. They both flinched. "I want you out. Both of you. Get the fuck out of here. Grab your shit Keira and don't ever let me see your face again. If you're still here when I get back I swear to God I will kill you both." Kyle got up, approaching Gabe his hands up in a gesture of those who are pacifying another person, "Gabe, I'm sorry, this isn't how –" He didn't get to finish his sentence; Gabe had swung hard and knocked Kyle down to the ground, his nose giving a resounding crack as his fist made contact with his face, blood spurting from his nose instantly. He heard Keira shriek in surprise before he turned and left the room. He had driven for hours, lost, unsure what to do with himself. He had severely misjudged the people he was supposed to trust the most. He and Kyle had often joked about who saw Keira first, but he never thought that he actually had feelings for her. He had never expressed them, and yet he had been fucking her brains out tonight. He drove aimlessly before coming across a park and pulled in by it. He was crushed. The woman he loved and had invested all his time and affection into for the past three years had spent almost one of them screwing his best friend. His anger had dissipated and in its place was a deep grief. In the span of half an hour his life had turned upside down, his body was shaking as a result. He went to see the only person who he knew could comfort him. He started the car again and wove through the city to see the man he looked up to at all times. He arrived quickly, with little traffic on the roads and knocked on the door. It swung open, and his brother stood shocked to see him on his steps. "Toni..." "Gabriel? What's happened? I thought you were at the conference?" "She's been sleeping with Kyle, Toni, all this time..." he trailed off, gasping for breath and dropping to his knees, his head hung low. "Gabriel? What are you doing here? I thought you were out with Ellena." Gabe started a bit, he had been lost in the past, and he hadn't realized Toni standing in front of him. He almost laughed at the fact he was seeking his brother's council yet again, only for a different girl and a completely different situation. "I doubt Ellena wants anything to do with me after tonight." Toni saw the look on Gabe's face and instantly knew something went wrong. He cursed under his breath. "Come on, come upstairs, we'll talk inside." Gabe followed Toni as he unlocked the door and stepped inside. They ended up in the kitchen, Toni pulling out two glasses and pouring out some scotch. "So, what happened?" "Keira happened." He saw his brother's eyes widen and cloud with a similar rage he felt. It hadn't been just Gabe that had felt betrayed, the entire family had. They invited her into their home, as one of them and she spat on that courtesy. "She followed you again?" "I assume so. She was at the club. Ellena went to the bathroom and didn't come back. I went looking for her and found her throwing back drinks with Keira." Gabe heard his brother curse again, this time in Italian and loudly. "How did Ellena react when she found out who Keira was?" "Well, after running away from me and falling and injuring herself, she closed down. The lights went off so to speak." Gabe sat staring at his brother, pacing back and forth, running his fingers through his hair. He looked pissed, but underneath all that was worry. He was worried about Ellena. Why? "Toni, what happened to her that was so bad she closes herself off from everyone?" His brother sighed and stopped pacing, turning to face him, his expression clearly showing he was torn between his loyalty to his family and loyalty to a very dear friend of his. Finally one of them won out. "Gabriel...she was hurt, badly. Hurt in ways a person should never be hurt, ways that are difficult to forget. It took her years to recover and even now she still bears the scars." Gabe stared at his brother, anger swelled through him at the thought of another person harming her. His mind was whirling. He thought of how shied away from him when things began to get intense. She shut down emotionally and she wouldn't let him in. How did meeting Keira tonight factor into this entire situation? He saw how upset she had been when she realized who Keira was, he saw it written on her face, but he had explained his absolute dislike for his ex. So what was it that caused her to run like there was a pack of wolves at her heels? "Toni – " "That is all I will say Gabriel. I have betrayed her trust by even saying anything, but I believe she will open up to you eventually. Just promise me this Gabriel. Listen to her completely before you judge her or come to any conclusions. I know you can be a bit impulsive at times." Gabe stared at his brother, wondering what the hell he was talking about but decided to agree even though he didn't quite understand at the moment. "That's assuming she speaks to me in the first place." "I see something between you two, which is why I've chosen to face her wrath when she realizes that I've even said anything." You are two broken souls, Toni thought to himself, meant to heal each other. I'm waiting for the day when you both see that. --- Ellena lay sprawled out on her extremely comfortable couch eating straight from a tub of her favourite chocolate cinnamon ice cream. She was in her bra and underwear, with a robe thrown over her as an afterthought. Her feet were clad in wool socks too big for her and her hair lay in a wild mess around her shoulders. Music was blasting from a set of speakers, and she was humming along out of tune, singing out random words of the song when she knew them, while her head and feet swayed back and forth to the rhythm. She had been sitting there since last night, getting up only to use the bathroom or to eat. Ellena always thought it cliché to sit home and wallow in food after a disaster such as the one she experienced the previous night, but now that she was in fact sitting at home, enjoying every last lick of her chocolate ice cream, she thanked God for clichés. The food filled her with joy, if only briefly, the music drowned out her thoughts, and she lay comfortable in the security of her own home, the way she should have done from the beginning. Adonis in the Flesh Ch. 04 Her music was so loud, she did not hear the banging on the door and the shout that followed. So, naturally she was quite startled when Jenna used her spare key to let herself in, to find her best friend lying half naked looking like a right mess. She jumped up in shock, and merely stared at Jenna as she took in the scene and walked over to the speakers and turned them down. "What the fuck Ellena? What's going on? I've been trying to call you but your phone is disconnected and I come over and you don't answer your door!" "I didn't hear you..."she answered lamely. Both girls looked at each other and burst out laughing. "Of course you didn't fucking hear me," she gasped between breaths, "I don't think you would have heard a war break out in front of your street!" When both girls calmed down a bit, Ellena asked, "What're you doing here Jenna?" Jenna grabbed the tub of ice cream out of Ellena's hands and dug in, "You've been neglecting your bride's maid duties, so I thought I would check up on you and see if you were ok...and to see if you wanted to go dress shopping with me tomorrow?" "You left out the part where you came to ask how the date went with Gabe." Jenna deflated, her lips pouting a bit, "Am I that predictable?" "Yes, and the date was great, except for the part where I bought his ex a drink and then found who she was after the fact." "That explains a lot," she said gesturing to her lack of clothes and unkempt hair, "What happened to your hands and knees?" she asked, taking in the bandages. "Fell, "she replied simply, not wanting to go into details. Before Jenna could ask anything more, Toni flew into the apartment as though he lived there causing both girls to look up in surprise as he strode over to them, looking as good as ever. He bent over each woman's hand, kissing it, before perching his perfectly chiseled ass in the love seat opposite them. "Buon giorno, belle donne!" he said, suavely. Ellena rolled her eyes at his little show. He wanted something, and he was charming her to get it. She would like to say it never worked, but Toni worked magic. "Do you two have some sort of mission to make my life hell?" she asked looking between the two, wondering if they had planned their visits together. They both shook their heads and shrugged. "What do you want Antonio?" Ellena asked, using his full name to show she was not in the mood for games. "Very well, I see you are not in the best of moods," he said taking in her disheveled appearance and the slight mess in her usually impeccable apartment, "I shall cut to the chase. I have just come from Casa Moretti and mother and father insist you join us tonight for dinner. They say it has been too long since you came to 'notte della famiglia'. They will not take no for an answer. So, I shall see you there, eight o'clock, don't be late. You know how father gets when a meal is served cold," he finished, rolling his eyes dramatically. He stood up from the couch and began making his way to the door. "Hold it!" she called out, and Toni stopped in his tracks, "What if I have plans?!" "But you don't," he said smiling as he turned around to face her. She began sputtering, angry that he was not giving her an option. Before she could stop herself she blurted out, "Is Gabe going to be there?" Toni laughed loudly, "Ellena, since when has Gabe ever joined us for a family dinner. I doubt he will start surprising us now." She looked at him suspiciously, "Why aren't you asking about last night?" "What on earth are you talking about my dear?" "Oh don't give me that crap Toni, you've never been one to keep quiet on anything." "It's none of my business," he said with a devious smile. "HA! You've made my love life your business since the day we met Antonio Moretti, the day it stops being your business is the day hell freezes over my persistent Italian friend." "Really, Ellena, you are becoming so paranoid. I have merely looked out for your best interests." "Oh is that what we're calling it now?" "Yes, now if you'll excuse me, I have to assist in making dinner tonight, ciao ladies," he said with a half bow. With that, he turned and strode out just as quickly as he had come in. Something told her he wasn't being completely forthright, but when Clara and Dario Moretti invited you over to dinner, you didn't say no. Ellena snorted and mumbled, "Best interest my ass," under her breath. "Is it really so bad Ellena? That we want you happy, and encourage you to step out a bit?" "You two don't 'encourage', you throw, push, manipulate and scheme until you get what you want. I'm the idiot who lets you do it all." "Exaggerating a little aren't we?" "No Jenna, I'm not!" she suddenly yelled. She felt like they were all cornering her, especially with their visits so close together, and Toni's insistence that she show up for dinner tonight. It was too much on top of her confused feelings from the night before. "You guys have been so lost in this fantasy that me and Gabe will fall in love and live happily ever after, because somewhere along the line you thought we are perfect for each other! But no one stopped to ASK me what it was that I wanted! All my life, everyone took decisions out of my hands! I never chose ONE fucking thing, except to get the hell out of L.A. and try and move on. You guys are taking away my decisions, trying to force me into this vision you've dreamed up for the both of us. Did you ever stop to think that maybe I don't want it? Or that Gabe might not want it? Or that he wouldn't want ME in particular if he found out about my past?" she was breathing hard, and found that she had stood up sometime during her rant. Jenna was looking up at her shocked. Ellena rarely lost her cool, and the fact that she had yelled in such frustration was new to Jenna. She, however, hadn't missed the last thing Ellena had said. She knew her friend well enough to know what was truly bothering her. "Ellena, he wants you, whatever your past was. I'm sure of it. It wasn't your fault, and if Gabe can't see that, then I'm sorry I pushed you so far. And this is me you're speaking to, I know you like him, you can't hide that from me." "Jenna," she sighed, plopping back down into the sofa, all the fight in her gone all of a sudden, "I don't deserve someone like Gabriel. I didn't deserve Adam. I may have left L.A. behind, but people don't change. I will inevitably hurt him and I can't do that. Not to him, to Toni, that entire family. They are all too good for me." Jenna groaned in exasperation, "People DO change Ellena, you are different! You're older now, wiser; you would never repeat the mistake, as you call it, again. When are you going to see that you were young and naive then, and manipulated by a man played on your weaknesses? You are so much stronger now. The fact that you are thinking of everyone before yourself shows what type of person you've become. And I'm sorry but not every man is Jared, Ellena. You can't let him ruin everything for you." "Jen, let me for once, since I've moved here, make my own choice. Please. You may not agree with it, but I can't take it anymore. With you and Toni and Gabe breathing down my neck I'm suffocating. I just need a break. I promise you I'll try, eventually, just please, no more schemes ok?" Jenna rolled her eyes, "Fiiiine, no more schemes, even if I think you're being a stubborn fucking idiot. Now come on, let's get you ready for dinner! Trust me hun, you need the help," she added when she saw her about to protest, eyeing her hair pointedly. Ellena admitted defeat. They both headed to her bedroom, Ellena to shower and Jenna to pick out some outfits. --- A few hours later found Ellena pulling into the Moretti drive way, clean and proper. She wore a pair of skinny jeans and a flowy gray silk top that gathered at her right hip, and heels. She didn't want to be too dressy, but the family was true Italian and was always dressed to impress. She was a little nervous as she walked up to the home. She felt like somehow her role in the family had changed, simply because she had gone out with Gabriel. She didn't want to disappoint the family, they seemed to have all been affected by his last relationship, who wouldn't? She just simply did not want them to read too much into this entire situation. It was just a simple date, right? She loved the family as her own and did not want it to affect her relationship with each member just because she could not cope with one. It was another reason to tack onto her list of why she wouldn't further involve herself with Gabriel. She knew it was silly, she had found a family in the Moretti home all those years ago, Dario and Clara Moretti were the parents she had lost. Toni and his brothers Davide and Matteo had all become brothers to her in turn. Of course, his sisters had become good friends along the way. Nicoletta, Savina, and Chiara were among the most powerful and beautiful women Ellena had come to know. She always felt at home with them, and yet here she was, entering their home as if she were a stranger about to meet them all for the first time. She shook her head and tried to push her feelings away. Nothing has changed, it was one night and it's not like he's asked you to marry him, she thought. The walk up the driveway was long, despite having parked as close to the house as possible. She glanced up at it and admired the house, set back between hundred year old oak trees. Casa Di Sisto, as she now termed it, never failed to impress her. Each time she found it more beautiful than the last. Dario had impeccable taste, he had designed the home from start to finish, and as an architect she found herself admiring his work constantly. He had mentored her and guided her to her calling – design. She loved creating things from scratch and watching as they grew from one simple idea to an actuality. Dario had been smart enough to see that, and she thanked God everyday for having such an amazing set of friends in her life. Just as she set foot onto the first step, the front door flew open and a big figure scooped her up in a tight bear hug. She shrieked in surprise before laughing loudly. He was hugging her so hard she had to fight to breathe, her legs swinging beneath her as the force of his embrace lifted her off the ground. "It's good to see you too Matty," she said still laughing, her voice a little hoarse from lack of breath. Realizing he was squeezing her to death he set her down and planted a light kiss on her cheek. "Ellena! You're finally here! Been too long, kiddo!" She rolled her eyes at his nickname for her; Matteo was only two years older than her. "It has! You look good, Matty," she smiled, her previous nervousness melting away. Matteo had that effect on people. "And yet you go out with the ugly duckling of this family," he joked "Hey, whenever you want a real man, let me know," he winked at her before giving her another huge bear hug as she laughed at his jibe at Gabe. Matteo was so obviously from Dario's side, that Ellena had been surprised she never stopped to question how different the family looked before. She had always assumed Clara and Dario had been together. Since Toni's little revelation, it all made sense now. They had both had children from previous marriages, with the exception of Gabriel and Savina, who they had together. It explained how Matteo's hair was such a light brown it bordered on being blonde, while his other brothers all had jet black hair. It was styled in the typical manner of the males in this family, long and wavy. His eyes were green with gold flecks, much like his father, which were framed by a strong brow bone. He had the face of a ruggedly handsome man, a strong jaw with a cleft in the center, and a smile that could light up the entire room. He was tall, standing at almost six and a half feet, and had broad shoulders and strong arms. Despite his entirely macho appearance, he was a teddy bear at heart. She felt herself immediately relaxing. "Matty, you should've told me you were into me earlier, maybe then I wouldn't have settled for the smug ass in the first place," she mock whispered. Gabriel's laugh boomed in the hallway, wiping the smile right off her face. Shit. Toni said he wasn't coming. She thought of all the ways Toni was going to pay for this, before Matteo wrapped an arm around her shoulder and steered her into the house, bending his head over into her ear. "Sorry, Kiddo, he surprised us all," he whispered. "Gabriel," she said, nodding at him. "Good to see you Ellena," he said, eyeing his brothers hand on her shoulder. She swore if looks could kill Matty would be dead right now, or at the very least missing an arm. She stifled down a laugh, causing both men to look at her strangely. Before she could say anything they were at the entrance to the kitchen and Clara pulled her into another bone crunching hug. The entire family was in there, each helping with something. It was most definitely the heart of the home, a place she loved to watch the family interact. Dario was standing over the stove, no doubt cooking something delicious from the smell of it, while the sisters sat at the massive island laughing at something, when they noticed Ellena. It was like a stampede, Ellena was immediately surrounded by the sisters, receiving a rather large group hug before Dario left his station and came to give her a strong hug and kiss on top of her head. "How are you, bella? We've missed you around here," he said in his deep voice, a hint of his accent slipping through. "Just great Dario, I've missed you all tremendously! Thanks for having me over...again, "she smiled warmly. "Can I help you with anything?" she glanced around the kitchen, noting Toni and Davide were missing. "Absolutely not!" Clara practically shouted as she shooed them into the living room yelling at Toni to bring them some wine. Ellena looked up immediately, she still hadn't seen Toni. He was hiding no doubt, knowing she would be pissed that he had set this entire evening up. Matty was already steering her into the family room. It was a large space, with windows on each wall, allowing natural light to filter into the massive room. There was a wood burning fireplace in the center, and floor to ceiling bookcases surrounding it on either side. There was a vaulted ceiling, with reclaimed wood beams that ran the length of the room. The walls were done in a light cream, bringing out the dark hardwood floors nicely. Large, plush dark cream sofas were set in the center with smaller love seats scattered around. It was clean, relaxed and homey, yet classy and luxurious. Clara had an eye for interiors, always fussing over the house. Ellena sat in her favourite sofa in the space, while Matty sat next to her, and Gabe followed behind them sitting opposite her, a large wooden coffee table between them. She thought of the last time they were together, the kiss they shared, and her cheeks flushed slightly. She averted her gaze, trying her hardest not to look at him straight in the eyes, focusing somewhere above his head. This really could not get any more awkward, she thought. There was a silence in the room, and she heard Matty chuckle under his breath and she turned to find him shaking his head. Just then Toni came in, a bottle of wine in one hand and four glasses in the other. She gave him an accusing look as he approached. In his typical style, he shrugged and smiled unashamedly. She sighed loudly, and he chuckled, leaned in and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "You can thank me later, bella, when you realize how silly you have been," he whispered quietly in her ear. "You're not getting off that easy, Antonio." Of course Toni brushed it off with a wave of his hand, a short loud laugh and headed back towards the kitchen, having forgotten the bottle opener. "So I hear you've been dating this schmuck," Matty stated loudly, gesturing to Gabe. She heard him groan. She laughed, hiding her absolute horror at having to discuss this at all, especially in front of Gabe. It was so typical of Matty, making light of any situation, however awkward. "You jealous Matty?" she teased, masking her emotions as best she could. "Hell yeah, I'm jealous. Lucky bastard got one of the best looking women in the city in my opinion," he winked at her. She rolled her eyes, "I see the Moretti charm doesn't stop with Toni." "It's ok, I may not have you but at least I know I'm the better looking one out of all my brothers." "HA! As if, you know the ladies are always flocking towards me bro," Davide's voice came from behind them, "Don't know why you're wasting your time with these idiots honey, but when you realize how boring he is, you're more than welcome to give me a call," David said, winking and pulling her out of her seat into what seemed her tenth bear hug of the night. "I don't know Davide, Matty's already propositioned me, you might have to get in line." "Davey, stop mackin' on my girl, and I know you didn't just say you were the best looking out of all of us," Matteo said standing as if to protect Ellena. "He's right, he's not, because it's obviously me," Gabe said matter-of-factly, as they all turned to him. He had been so quiet but he had a playful look on his face, "how else could I attract the attention of such a gorgeous and absolutely amazing woman as Ellena?" Her heart stuttered at his words. She looked away quickly, trying to push away the warm feeling that flooded within her at his words. She wasn't one to faint at every compliment, but coming from Gabe's mouth made them special to her. A thought she didn't quite like. A loud and rather boisterous argument began about which of the three of them was the better looking one, leaving Ellena laughing until her sides hurt, forgetting her previous worries. The three sisters joined them in the living room and began egging the brothers on, each one siding with a brother. "Enough, Ellena, you decide, which would you rather date based on looks," Davide asked while standing proud, mock modeling and flexing his muscles, then adding in a loud whisper, "It's ok, just be honest, we all know it's me." "Ma naturalmente, it is me!" Toni declared as he too finally rejoined the room. "Boys, boys, if I had to choose, it would be Dario, but he's happily married, so sadly it seems I'm left wanting." All four men deflated at that, looking dejected. Ellena giggled at the sight, just as Clara entered and announced dinner was ready. Instantly Gabe was at her side, his hand resting on her back as he led her to the dining room. He whispered in her ear before she sat down, "I know you secretly picked me..." Her heart stopped at his touch and the warmth of his breath on her ear and neck. He had no idea how true his words were, but she would never let him know it. She tried to crush her feelings once again, but it was difficult with his hand resting on her back, his body close to hers. Of course, they had set her place at the table next to Gabe, with Toni on her other side. She tried scooting her chair closer to Toni as best she could without making it obvious. Gabe realized what she was doing and chuckled under his breath, pulling her chair closer to him with one arm. She glared at him, then turned to Toni and made sure he knew in no uncertain terms that she would be having a few choice words with him after dinner. He pointedly ignored her and began serving everyone food. Of course, she couldn't help but relax a bit, after all food had to be her favourite thing in the world, especially when Dario and Toni cooked. She was beginning to enjoy herself, as Davide and Matteo shared stories of their recent visit to Rome. They had the entire table laughing, and she found herself forgetting that she was angry at Toni and trying to resist Gabe. She was just Ellena, enjoying a divine dinner with her family. It was when Toni began clearing the plates, to make room for dessert that the evening began to turn sour. Toni was turning to pick up Ellena's plate when by accident he knocked her wine glass over and it went spilling all over her chest and lap. The red liquid began spreading over her clothes, giving the effect that she was bleeding.
