Instead, my purpose is to identify and discuss some of the elements that are peculiar to a particular type of erotic story and that, as such, probably ought to be addressed by writers of such narratives. The type of narrative that I'm interested in discussing in this essay is the incest story, and the sibling incest story in particular. In the film version of The Wizard of Oz, protagonist Dorothy Gale discovers that "there's no place like home" and that, if she cannot find happiness in her own back yard, she probably won't find it anywhere else, either. This is also the basic theme of most incest stories that have happy endings: the main character finds love close at home (in fact, in the arms of his sister or her brother), rather than elsewhere. Of course, individual examples of sibling incest stories often have more specific themes that are peculiar to themselves as well. Sibling incest stories are about forbidden fruit, too, of course: most societies forbid sex between a brother and a sister. That which is forbidden is often, for no other reason but that it is forbidden, desirable, as Adam and Eve learned in the Garden of Eden and as men and women have been learning, again and again, ever since. Many incest stories involving a brother and a sister take place close to the characters' adolescence. By choice rather than by necessity, Literotica refuses to publish erotica that involves underage characters. However, especially in incest stories, the characters do tend to be as close as possible to their pubescent years. Many are still teenagers of eighteen or nineteen, and some are even high school seniors or college students. In sibling incest stories, the younger, the better is the rule, rather than the exception, concerning the characters' age, probably not only because younger people tend to be more attractive than older people, but also because sex is more a mystery to young people (especially if they are virgins) and, therefore, more enticing, both to the characters themselves and to readers. For many, sex with a brother or a sister (or, for that matter, both at once) is (or was, during childhood) a real temptation. Indeed, it may have been an attraction upon which siblings acted, albeit without penetrative sex. Maybe, besides ogling one another's bodies, youngsters exchanged a kiss or a caress. Maybe there was masturbation, mutual or reciprocal. Even if there was no physical explorations at all, the thought of such behavior, or even of penetrative sex, may have been an ongoing fantasy on the part of one or both siblings. In either case, sibling incest stories provide a release, as it were, for such fantasies, allowing readers to do, if only in their imaginations, what, in reality, they are forbidden by society to do and which they forbid themselves from doing. (In cases in which penetrative sex did occur between siblings, sibling incest stories are reminders of such fond times.) Many sibling incest stories are stories of seduction. In erotic fiction, seduction is the equivalent of the action-adventure story's chase scene. In its own right, as if it were a story within a story, the seduction of one sibling by the other, is a chase, a hunt, a conquest. Often, to soften the pursuit, it is the sister who seduces the brother, although the brother is certainly capable of the pursuit of his sister, too. In such plots, she uses her charms, naughty language, sweet talk, and whatever other weapons of seduction she has in her siren's arsenal to capture the heart of the young man of her dreams--her own brother! Since, in stories of seduction, it is often more exciting if the quarry shows some resistance, he may find the thought of incest revolting, shameful, and immoral--at first. If so, part of the story's pleasure lies in his sister's overcoming of these prejudices (often through sexual measures accompanied by lessons in psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history concerning the acceptability of sibling sex.) Her seduction is not only sexual but moral. In this regard, she is a femme fatale, and la belles sans merci are always intoxicating creatures. Sibling incest stories are apt to be comedies; that is, they are likely to end happily. The reluctant partner's reservations about having sex with his sister or with her brother are vanquished, both by enlightenment and by the act itself, and he or she is now as enthusiastic about making love to his or her sibling as his sister or her brother is excited at the prospect (and the continuation of the sexual relationship that almost invariably results from the initial experience). The proximity of the potential lovers; the forbidden quality of incestuous sex itself; the characters' youth, beauty, and relative innocence; the wish-fulfillment aspects of the incestuous act; the seduction (and corruption) of one character by another; the typically happy ending--all these are relatively fixed features of sibling incest stories which help to define the genre and to establish readers' expectations, and writers of sibling incest stories ignore such elements at their own peril. I have written several sibling incest stories (and a few chapters, in my novel, The Sarah Owens Story, are devoted to father-daughter incest): "Brotherly Love" (tagline: "'Married' siblings honeymoon at a nudist camp"); "Bukkake Brothers" (tagline: "Jenny's bothers satisfy their sister's love for bukkake"); "Cock Crazy" (tagline: "What's a cock crazy girl to do?"); "Dancing the Night Away" (tagline: "A dream girl and her date dance the night away"); "Good in Bed" (tagline: "For these siblings, it's only a matter of superlatives"); "Housewarming" (tagline: "Who'd have thought a caladium could be so hot?"); "My Brother's Keeper" (tagline: "His dominant sister won't take 'no' for an answer"); "My Brother, My Sister" (which is categorized as belonging to the "Transsexuals and Crossdressers" genre because the sister is also a brother; tagline: "Death makes us appreciate life--and one another--better"); "Pooling Around" (tagline: "They were just 'pooling around' at first"); "Sex on the Beach" (tagline: "A cock in the ass is better than Sex on the Beach"); "Sneak Peeks" (tagline: "She believes in setting obtainable goals"); "Stocking Stuffers" (tagline: "Like Bing, they were dreaming of a white Christmas"); "Sugar and Spice" (tagline: ". . . make everything nice"); "The Diary of Forbidden Fruit" (tagline: "Nothing tastes as sweet as forbidden fruit"); "The Key" (tagline: "A key unlocks a door between two sibling lovers"); "Unmanned" (tagline: "What is a man after he's been. . . unmanned?"). (Chapter 5 of my novel Buffy the Shemale Vampire Slayer may also be regarded as an instance of father-daughter incest, if Rupert Giles is accepted as a surrogate father figure to young Buffy.) Most of these stories have been well received by Literotica writers. "Brotherly Love," "Good in Bed," "My Brother, My Sister," "Sugar and Spice," and "The Key" are favorites among them. I am at something of a loss to understand why these four stories are "hotter" than the others I have written, but I have a few ideas which may be worth considering by other writers of sibling sex stories. In a couple of my stories, the parents either suspect that their son and daughter are having sex and then discover that their suspicions are correct or the parents know all along that hanky panky is taking place between their offspring. In either case, the parents either come to approve of their children's incestuous relationship or tolerate it. Personally, I find such approval or acceptance on the part of the parents to be both refreshing and sexy, but readers, in general, seem to be more put off than turned on by such a situation. Readers also seem to prefer sibling incest stories in which seduction, rather than trickery, is used to secure the consent of the seduced. I believe that readers find the deception and deceit that Jennifer's brother uses to enlist his other brothers as his sister's bukkake suppliers distasteful (pun intended) to some readers. They would have preferred, I think, to have had Jenny recruit her other brothers by the use of her feminine wiles rather than through her brother's more Machiavellian machinations. As odd as it may seem, readers of sibling incest stories want the love to be romantic, not forced or coerced. Finally, the shorter the story and the less detailed its sex scenes, the less well readers tend to respond to it, the favorites among my sibling incest stories suggest. Readers seem to prefer erotic action over stories that are more thematic in their orientation. Of course, these are just ideas, largely uniformed by reader opinion. For this reason, I invite readers--those who have actually read my sibling incest stories--to respond with their own support for (or refutation of) my conclusions. Please feel free to agree or disagree, but with a polite, courteous, and respectful tone. Genuine feedback is welcome; bullshit will be deleted. Thanks, and may you continue to enjoy sibling incest stories, both my own and those of other writers.
