Storms like the world has never scene floods snow fall where no snow ever fell. Freezing winters in Florida oranges and such soon were not in markets. Trucks couldn't get fuel to deliver goods the government did what it could but millions were dying everywhere. 

The government started putting people to sleep some sort of cryogenic state. Canada had to close its Borders people from the states were trying to cross it was like Mexico in the late 20th century. Leave it to the government instead of putting people to sleep from the cities they chose small villages. Ours was one and that is where our story begins.

We leave here 4 am will put us to the pave road by daylight then its 10 miles to town. No one travels without two other people with them. One says no, you don't go."

"No argument but we will try to stay together. I have got two keys for truck one is in the gas cap the other I have. If we run into a fire fight we get out of dodge so to speak." 

"If one or more of you get captured give up that you're living at Gladice place we will wait two weeks there with an ambush for them."

"Ok get some sleep and were off in the morning."

Chapter 18

Next morning at three we all had good breakfast at 4 we left our home and by 5 we were on the paved road. The road had burnt vehicles it was like and obstacle course. We were moving along at 50 mile and hour there was no smell of smoke and no sign of life. 

Just at the edge of town there was a truck blocking the road. We backup a block stopped looked around then took a side road around the truck brought us by a old burnt out farm and in behind the rink I had Janice climb the bleachers she had dads field glasses and after five minutes she said, "I see no smoke in the town and no movement."

We drove to the ford dealer ship we went to the parts department. There we found filters we took them by the case, one way or another make then work.

We found the keys in the showroom to the trucks there was a diesel cube van. In the shop we found bags of sulphuric acid and under a tarp a bunch of new batteries not yet filled with acid we loaded then on the truck we found the cube van put some fuel into it hand primed it topped it with oil and took our battery put it in the cube while we left ours run we put a new battery filled it with acid and it was charging we cranked the truck over without heating the glow plugs just to get the oil pumped around then fired up the glow plugs and the truck came to life.

We opened the back it had body metal and a few cutters etc. in it but was mainly empty. We found alternators took what we could find and put them in the cube van. We d took all kinds of fan belts and put them in the back.

It was now 10 am we went to Canadian tire store a block down the road it was deserted glass all broken out and a piece of the roof had collapsed. We went into automotive part got all the oil they had the girls found bolts of clothing kids sneakers tons of baby clothes pampers we had the cube van 3/4 full.

There were lots of oil fired lamps we took them. We got a few generators they had I gas two diesel ones we muscled them on the truck by noon we were loaded and we found some sheep there was about 10 of them they had not been sheered in years we put down a bit of grain ad they came running. We put them in the cube van with some grain we managed to get five and really wanted to get moving. 

Janice and I both smelled wood smoke the wind had come up but the smoke was behind us a ways off so we continued on our way as we came back out on the road we made tracks for home by 1:00pm we were on our road by 2 we reached Gladice old home half a dozen girls stayed there with the assault gear and food we continued to the house once there we quickly unloaded fuelled up and headed back we baby monitored ahead got the all clear with a yellow rag. We lay in ambush till dark all clear so we loaded up and went home.

The next two weeks we were all on pins and needles it was quite the risk but we needed it and got much more we sheered the sheep and Gladice and René' had I spinning wheel at their place and used to spin yarn as a hobby. We went back to her place and got it we were still cautious but we had quite the assault force ourselves all the girls practiced every day and all shot game and were picking their shots not only to kill the game but to hone their skills.

Rene taught Gina and Freda to spin yarn and at night the girls would have knitting sittings. Life was getting to be very enjoyable most of my girls were close to having more children and they did and not one boy all girls what was the matter with me there got to be some boys. 

I was getting concerned, I loved all my kids but we needed males or the family would eventfully dye out.

Our house after a couple of years was getting to small the kids were tripping over each other. I was blocked in all directions the garage one way the green house and septic behind the garden to the left. 

There wasn't enough room in front, so I looked at across the street we all talked and I said, "A log cabin is too primitive it wouldn't be fair for those living there." We talked about living there in two homes and how would I be shared.

Get together for us all was a hot topic and a hundred other things. I decided another trip to town maybe find a trailer from the trailer park.

Family was not happy but the situation here was getting in tolerable. Most of the girls were only a few months along we did the same way but had lots of fuel food batteries charged and took some grain and extra water maybe find the sheep again. The ones over 6 months stayed back to look after the kids there was now more kids than adults. I

n town it was even more of a ghost town cob webs all around showing it was safe we went to the trailer park it was burnt out and vandalized so we went to the building supply place and it was empty as far as people windows broke but in the yard was tractor trailers loaded with modular homes three trucks one piece on each truck and another truck with a boom crane and all the parts to put it together. What wasn't there was a foundation in the yard there were plenty of cinder blocks and two flat deck trucks the trucks had no fuel but we come prepared this time we had 50 Gerry cans full. 

I climbed up in the cab god the rig looked big but they were automatic transmission we put batteries in one tractor it turned over we checked the fluids they looked ok we did the same with the other truck then did the two flat bed they worked then we added the fuel and fired them to life we shut then off and used one crane to load pallets.

That was slow and awkward, one truck had a fork lifted fastened to it. I got it fired up and we used that. We loaded the bricks and then loaded roof shingles ours on the old farm were reaching their age. Janice seen metal roofing and we loaded that to; the life span of metal roofing was much longer. 

Betty said, "Maybe we could get some beds for the kids. There is a furniture store a few blocks from here." We left four girls there to secure the area while we went to the store. 

There was a cube van outside and from cob webs everywhere even over the broken windows. We opened the back of the tuck it was full of queen size box spring and mattress, 42 sets. 

The girls went inside and came back with boxes of bed sets comforters and all and there was a toy section so they loaded up boxes of the toys it was a bonanza for them the kids came first in their eyes.

I worked got the truck started needed battery and fuel surprise and surprise. I just smiled everything was drained of anything that could be used for power. Betty said, "There's a shoe store behind this store, so we went again all cob webs windows. 

We broke cobwebs and we went in they had boxes of shoes sneakers boots. It would of taken all day and I said, "Take them all," it filled our cube van 1000's of pairs of anything and everything all kinds of work boots. 

Next door was a sporting goods store, I was more careful no cob webs, we looked listened and I went in with Fran and Cindy and the store was empty. We got all kinds of lake fishing rods and in a locked display case was ammunition. We broke the glass and got all the ammo through it on the truck.

As I was about to leave I spotted hunting gear, range finders, compass, waterproof matches, and all kinds of accessories stuff in unopened boxes, that had ceiling tiles fell on them. 




The After Time Pt. 04



Then there were hand held citizen band radios and hand held antennas, coaxial cable, and also crank up atamans.

I knew it went together we spent an hour digging it out and I brought another five ton from the furniture store next door. It had couches and a couple fridges and freezers on it. 

It was well past noon but this was a treasure house in the back of my mind I knew it was important for our growing family. In behind the radios where the roof laid on display cases were chain saws so we crawled in and got all 15 of them and in the show cases was chains, chain bars and files we got them to then we loaded up and headed back to the lumber yard.

Janice said, "I found all kinds of led bulbs and wire it's on one of the trucks." We all took a truck Janice drove the big rig I sat on the roof with wire cutters the trucks all had CB's they were put on channel two Betty drove the second tractor the other girls all followed 9 trucks leaving the yard anybody around would definitely hear us.

As we come to pole wires, I cut them and we would moved on. We come up to the truck sideways blocking the road the tractor pushed it to the ditch like it was a toy. 

We were just about out of town when spotted the sheep in the field we stopped and I put some grain down and called and the sheep came a running. 

We caught all five sheep, picked them up and put them in the cabs. They stunk but we were full up. Just before we turned out of town there was a John Deere shop. 

I went in got a brand new backhoe with a pull along grain harvester and a corn shucking machine. We put the corn machine on a brand new trailer and hooked it to one of the supply trucks.

We put the grain harvester on the trailer hitches and I drove the back hoe. We had a hard time making the turn with the house we final use the crane truck to lift the back end over on the road. We did the same with the second part of the house. 

Then we were off we had 9 trucks and the back hoe with 3 spare persons to guard. About a mile in one of the trucks put on a CD on their pa system convoy the song it fit us well because that is what we were a convoy heading home. 

Going up what we called our mountain the tractors were labouring I hooked my back hoe to it and that give it just enough to keep it moving I had to watch my throttle because it made me do a wheelie pulling that weight.

The crane truck got behind and carefully pushed the second rig there was no room to pass it we made the top and I radioed with the baby monitor we were coming in.

As we started down the yellow flags were in the yard the tractors we pulled forward to the miller farm. We burnt a lot of precious fuel I hope we have enough for this year.

Along with the other chores it took the rest of the summer to build that house when it was done Betty, Rena and Fran moved over there with the five kids. There were four bedrooms in the basement and three up stairs. 

We had to make a trip back to town I needed tanks and pipes and picked up a drilling machine to put in well and a pump, also had to get more generators and wind mills for power. 

I also found a cat d6 dozer we brought back. We needed it to clear more land as our family grew so did the need for more and more food. We cleared out the lumber supply place and got all kinds of plastic for green houses. My months were filled with building something or other.

I even picked up a swing set for the kids.

Had to kill off a family of beavers they dammed of the stream killing our power made good pelts for hats. Over the years that followed I built a saw mill and was making lumber. 

I had to control myself I had almost 50 kids now and it was hard as we expanded the farm there was only so much we could do the girls got older.

Making trips into town became a regular thing. We got a rooster and a few more cows even got a bull. It was a baby when we got him, we now have a small herd of cows.

We kill a couple wild pigs a year and bear and a few dear. I practice anal a lot now only one or two kids a year and they have a lottery for that. I don't know if its winner or loser I don't get involved. 

Finally in our eleventh year we had a son by Fran. Scott Jim Wayne Jim was her father. 

All the 10 year old girls now could shoot, snare, clean small game, they were growing up. We had to wear name tags most of us run nude because cloth was still hard to come by. 

All the young girls noticed that daddy was different and as they got older they became more interested on their 18th birthday they would mate with me starting a third generation. 

Across the street was a bloody hotel now a five story building with bedrooms everywhere and a huge dining hall where we all ate my home was a little more quite it was Janice, and Mona and there 20 kids but they spent most of the time with their brothers and sisters. 

Mom was showing her age now and couldn't take the noise of the kids she loved them all but in small portions soon Betty and Gladice moved in and we became the seniors place. 

30 years has passed we grown into our own community. we had to make a trip into a bigger town young Scott now lead the excursion as he was growing up Fran and I taught him to read and write and do math plus we got all the books from the mobile library and that was brought in for all the kids to learn. 

They brought home gravel trucks excavators an full trailer of raw cement powder and a cement truck with foundation forms lots of re bar. I would supervise where I could but was getting to old to build. Scott studied hard with about 20 of my girls on building and architecture.

I had 3 other sons over the years and sex was still fun but not as often they learned to play amongst themselves allot. 

Mom was in her 95 now in her past her change of life but still cranky sometimes but all in all a good life being on a farm life is harder and healthier.

We lost a few of our children to child hood diseases one went blind with measles things that were not even given a thought in the before time once again raised its ugly head. The year was 2074. We accepted it and moved on we had to. 

Mona always needed special treatment from me but it was nowhere near as harsh. The loss of our daughter Faith being her first born left a hole that could never be filled. 

Our main house Betty, Gladice, mom, Brenda, Mona, Joyce, Fran and myself moved back their kids lived across the street and our older daughters raise them we would go see them daily but we all needed more quiet.

The year was 2075 when we seen a helicopter fly over with a loud speaker saying turn on a radio and the dropped a radio with batteries they had no way of knowing we had power. The younger generations were terrified they never seen such a device and we never told them as it was a before time device. 

We turned on our radio and there was a constant recorded message saying the volunteer government has been reformed and were trying to get a consensus on how many people and where and what was needed. 

Chapter 19

About a year later a chopper landed we were all set for war they came in unarmed white flag they said they were checking out the areas looks like we were the largest community that there was no one in the town and a few older people towards the valley 50 miles away. 

Janice sent out the all clear and the family came out cautiously. 

They figured there was a few weapons on them but the family came out with assault rifles hunting rifles shot guns and even a machine gun he seen 10 year olds with 270 22s and 9mm. 

We invited them in for tea and they said, "There is a new capital was Greenwood the old air force base they got a refinery working in Halifax and are producing limited amount of fuel we got a volunteer military to help police things but they were farmers to they need to farm in order to live." 

The guys name is Tom and as we were talking he said, "Really I am no threat my partner and I come in peace you can call your men out now."

The girls all laughed and said, "He is our man. I said I have a 32 and a 15 year old son and a two and eight year old boys the rest are all girls." "All these are your children?" "Yes I have 15 wives." He looked and smiled "busy man."

"Yes I was one of the sleep programs so I am 79 now." The girls were asking so is there many men and what is outside here" the man said, "You have more here than anyone outside your mothers and father has provided well."

Tom I said, "We have kept this place secret we can support our own and we expand yearly to meet our needs unfortunately if outsiders come we will fight.

Many years ago 5 men attacked and they are buried over there."

"What we have we worked for and we intend to keep it government be dammed they screwed up once we don't need them or want them."

He said, "We can make your life easier." I said, "How, we manufacture our own power and someone turned on the light we have our own movies to watch pointed to the TV."

"We make our own fuel have enough oil to last us a few hundred years got enough clothing although we don't wear it most times and we are able to have children that are one family that stand together the only thing we don't have is medicine we lost 2 children to measles 1 is blind these we could use."

"Sorry we don't have any if we get it I will send it out." 

Janice said, "You will stay for supper it's just done now." 

Without waiting venison roast potatoes greens and even tomatoes slice to go around fresh bread rolls and butter milk and orange juice was brought out Tom and his co-pilot Frank were amazed. "Where did you get orange juice?" The 15 year old said, Grand dad has got a bunch of orange, lemon, and banana trees in one of the green houses.

Janice was picking at her food she said, "I am not really hungry my husband I have not been well al day with then she slumped over holding her chest. I carried her to a bed.

She said, "It is my time my son, my husband, my life, you made my life a paradise please rejoice in my passing I love you all," and she was gone.

The crying whaling was deafening. I closed her eyes and laced her hands together and I said, "Everybody line up and kiss your mother and grandmother and your great grandmother goodbye.

We will lay her to rest in the morning." The family all passed by and kissed her. The pilots said their goodbyes and said, "They would stop by again if it were permissible."

I said, "Yes but keep our location secret we don't want to kill people." 

That night I dug a whole out by the fence where Georgina and Faith were buried. I carried mom back to our house Mona and Joyce dressed her in a nice blue dress.

Brenda and I and Scott made the coffin carried it to the house, we prepared the coffin with some hay and a white sheet for a bed.

I stayed up all night none of us could sleep we thought of our life together. My wife my mother it was so hard I knew the day would come we all did but it's here and we are not ready. 

We all talked about the early days and moms part in it we never realized how much we intertwine. My three sisters myself and Fran placed mom in the coffin Cindy was invited to the house to be Paul bearer I said, "We will bury her early morning," her lips were turning black the heat of the summer forced us to close the coffin and say good bye.

Morning came and I told Mona give three shots from your shotgun everybody came out and gathered on the roadside by the picket fence burying my daughters was hard but this was beyond even that. 

We all carried the coffin I was dressed in the suit I married her in with some alterations that Joyce did. We lowered her to the ground and I spoke, "This was my mother and my wife she was a mother, Grandmother and a great grandmother. She lived happily and a full life to the last minute. 

We can all be thankful for a peaceful passing on her 97th year."

"She has helped build our village from the start she was always there for all of us, as one of my wives I love her dearly as a mother of Joyce, Mona, Brenda, and myself there is another special love we carry with us forever."

"Now if you will all join in the Lord's Prayer; Our father who art in heaven, and it went on at the end we ask in Jesus name you take the heavenly soul of this women to your paradise."

"Janice ask with her dying breath for this to be a happy occasion so I beg you to sing, with all your strength, and all your heart, 'As we gather by the river, and we sang as we lowered her to her final resting spot all of my family came around and put a shove full of dirt in the grave Joyce, Brenda, Mona, and I finished as all watched.

"I asked can my children please make breakfast for us older folk. We will be over shortly."

Chapter 20

The day was long we all just sat and talked about the good events in our lives. I told Mona's children to stay close she needed them today. 

By evening we started to talk about the morning it was berry picking time and we all decide to go Mona didn't want to I slapped her ass and said, "Are you giving your husband a hard time?" 

She broke down crying like a banshee she howled I said, "Let it out let it all out my love." Mona said, "I don't want to go on I want to join momma and our Faith."

"Mona my wife our time will come in gods own time we got a life to live to the best we can, to look after our children and our grand children we have no right to quit on them we will get by this, now get your shotgun and protect the family." "Oh master my husband I love you," and she pulls herself up. And I said, "Let's go." 

Gladice said, "I will mind the fort with Betty we would prefer it master." "Tell you what I will drive you up, you can walk around and sit in the truck when you want to the fresh air well do us all good." 

Reluctantly they got up and came they were in there 90's to so I had to be careful.

The kids all got into the berries they had them picked clean in two hours I told them we need to find more for all of us. They scattered and came back with more. "There was another patch down by the stream." and I said who was protecting you?" she pointed to two girls with 308 rifles. "Very good ok put your buckets in the truck and grab your fishing poles were going to the lake." 

Yea they shouted. We took the berries back Gina, Gladice, and Betty stayed home while the rest hit the lake the older ones went fishing while my kids went swimming.

Mona was on guard for animals which no one would dare come near with this crowd and a few of us kept an eye on her. Britney came over and said, "Dad I am eighteen and I want your baby."

I said, "Young Scott is over there." 

She said, "I want you," I am sorry my granddaughter but it is not possible for me to do that anymore. My time has past.

Life continued on and another home was built on the Miller place it was a mansion in size as the family grew we were our own village. More trips were made to town by young Scott and bigger farm machinery and farm tools were found. 

All the boys were busy producing more girls the ratio was about 10 girls to 1 guy. We were in our eighty's now Betty passed last year and Gladice a month ago we were now the seniors.

My son Scott took over most things although he always consulted me but the final decisions were his now. Mona was not doing well she couldn't get around think it was arthritis. Joyce was still mobile as was I Brenda slowed somewhat. 

My Fran and I spend a lot of time together just taking walks holding hands and talking. Some of the other girls would join us but Fran and I were every night we enjoyed watching the seasons pass we had little to do now actually, there was little we could do. 

In 2095 Mona passed and Rene', Brenda a year later Judy, Cindy, Patricia, went in the spring of 2097 along with Gina and Freda in the fall.

The funerals were hard we were a close family and the children looked at them all as mothers and grandmothers. For me it kept tearing a piece of my heart piece by piece my love my wives were leaving. 

Fran and I held each other together right from the moment by the lake those many years ago I felt that special connections.

One day while we were walking we were talking about it and she said, "When we first met she was thankful I saved them but she thought I was the most arrogant thing on two feet."

Fran said, "The day you poured out your responsibilities on Bridget was the day she fell in love with me. It was then I realized the load you really carried and the love you had for all the family including me."

"From that day on my husband you owned my heart and mind. My very soul was now yours for the taking and yes I knew you loved me special even then."

We found the main hall too noisy most times a few of our daughters would bring our meals over and sit and eat with us so we could stay in touch. Even the big hall was not big enough anymore they would have two sitting for every meal to feed everybody.

Scott and his son Mike Scott Mike after my father would make almost daily visits just after the sun went down to fill me in and see if I had any suggestions. 

He grew up in my shadow and was so used to me making decisions he was timid of making his own although he did make them and 99% of the time I agreed. 

Each year more and more land was cleared more and more green house put up. There must have been 20 girls looking after them now I still played with some indoor window sill spices but was a hobby not a necessity like the early days. 

In 2099 spring came early, Joyce Fran Melody and I were strolling the road and our kids coming out to say hi. They would leave and more would show up we walked to the end of the road. There were house right to the end and then fields being furrowed this place was bigger than anything I had seen even in the before time.

Joyce said, "Look the tree I was up in where I killed that pig and those dogs attacked. I said, "I remember that must have been 50 years ago." 

Fran said that's when Janice came up firing that machine gun. Tears were coming to my eyes and I said, "This is a beautiful day but I am awfully tired." 

Fran got on her portable and within minutes to club type trucks showed up and took us back to the house. 

After that day our strolls together were shorter I kept finding it harder to keep my wind. Fran stood by and could tell I was losing the fight against time.

One day Tom came driving in our road with a yellow and white flag on his jeep.

Young Scott now close to 71 brought him in and said, "That they wanted to buy lumber and for us to be part of the town, it is a small community and Tom was mayor." 

Tom said hi to Joyce Melody Fran and me.

Tom said, "You're exempt from property taxes as long as we stay and only pay tax on what we sell or buy."

Tom said, "We are back to the early 1900s as far as living standards go most of the population is wiped out you are the largest community in the province as far as we know."

Young Scott said, "Father what do you think?" 

"Son I can give you the history of what was, but it looks like the human race is giving a second chance now, it is still young province there will be lots of opportunity but joining that community will be the end of our way of life."

Joyce and Melody nodded in agreement Fran needed some fresh air and Joyce and melody soon followed this was mans talk and she needed no part of it.

"Son that may not be a bad thing but outside world will look at things differently, like I had 15 wives I don't think Tom and his world would abide by that." Tom said, "Your right Scott most people still go one man one women."

Young Scott said, "I have 43 wives. What happens there?"

Tom said, "What is now is what they called grandfathered so it remains in other words what is now remains but you children would be one wife."

Scott said "Some of my children already have 10 or so wives."
