Tulips of every color imaginable bloomed in gardens, along with daffodils in hues of yellow. The crocus with their skirts of blue purple white and yellow were gone, hiding beneath the ground, waiting for the next year when they would pop their little heads through the remaining winter snow, assuring mankind that the life cycle is once again being renewed. Bob drove to town that day and went directly to the nursery to order plants to put into his gardens at his country home. He had a good idea what he wanted, but decided to look at the Nursery catalogs to see what was new. His objective was to fill his gardens with perennials that didn't need much care and use brightly colored annuals as border plants. He consulted with the nursery manager, placed his order and was on his way. His business at the nursery had taken the better part of the morning and his stomach was growling in protest, because he hadn't taken time to eat breakfast. He pulled his pickup into the parking lot of The Breakfast Nook, parked and went inside. The restaurant was between breakfast and lunch rush hours so he wasn't surprised to see empty seats. He sat down in his favorite booth just as the waitress walked into the dinning room from the kitchen. "Hey, Bob, good morning." "Hey yourself Rita, how are you this morning?" "I'm just fine and dandy. Woke up this morning and the birds were singing. Kind of nice to hear that after the long cold winter we had. "Yes it is." "I'll be cussing them out this summer though, when the little buggers wake me up at the crack of dawn. What will you have this morning Bob, the usual?" "The usual Rita, and a cup of that steaming hot coffee that just tuned off." "Coming right up." Bob leaned back and stretched his long legs making himself comfortable, then looked out the window while sipping the hot brew. His mind wandered to when his wife of two years had died in a traffic accident. Christy had been physically beautiful with a beautiful spirit and an equally beautiful heart. She had a bubbly personality that drew people to her and a smile that was infectious. They had just started trying to have a family when her life ended, and his world ended. He knew he would never be the same. After the funeral, he couldn't bear to live in their house without her. Every piece of furniture, every room, even the dishes reminded him of her. He put the house and its contents up for sale. Leaving the details in the hands of his business agent, he packed his few belongings, got in the car, and not knowing where he was going, started driving. He drove cross-country, not knowing what he was seeking, or when he would find it. Weary of his travels after several weeks on the road, he decided it was time to make a decision. He wanted to find a place to live away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Fortunately he could run his business from anywhere, by keeping in touch with his business manager. The sign at the side of the road read, Peaceful, Population 1000. He knew as soon as he entered the small town that this was the place he wanted to be. He couldn't quite put his finger on it; maybe it was the name Peaceful, whatever it was he had found the place he would call home. He drove through town on Main St. checking out the businesses, then up and down side streets looking at the old stately homes that had been there for who knew how long. The homes were well-maintained and landscaped with shrubs, flowers and trees. He caught sight of small vegetable gardens in back yards and heard the laughter of children enjoying their swing sets. The first place he stopped after checking out the town was The Breakfast Nook. He was soon to learn the locals referred to it as simply, The Nook. It was small, but not too small, and tastefully decorated, with white lacy curtains on the windows and table cloths to match. Thick plate glass covered the lacy tablecloths for easy clean up. He liked the homey atmosphere and especially the friendly people inside. He ordered breakfast from the waitress that had the name Rita on her name tag, right next to the lace trimmed dainty handkerchief pinned to the front of her spotless uniform. He often wondered why some waitresses did the handkerchief thing and decided someday he would ask her. He lingered in the cafe long after he finished eating. He sat and sipped on coffee watching people come and go, most of who said hello to him, a complete stranger, some stopping to talk a few minutes. Everyone seemed to be on a first name basis. He left the Nook and walked the two blocks to a real estate office he had spotted while driving through town. The man there answered questions he had about Peaceful and the surrounding area, and gave him a small brochure of homes for sale in and around Peaceful. He thanked the man, whom he found out later was the brother of Rita the waitress at the Breakfast Nook, shook his hand and left, brochure in his jacket pocket. Being an astute businessman, he wasn't about to jump into anything rashly. Since money was no object, he rented the only suite at the local hotel. It was small, but clean and comfortable with Internet access and a restaurant off the main lobby, all he needed while investigating his options. The hotel had left a complimentary pack of coffee in the cupboard of the small kitchenette, so he put on a pot and waited for it to brew while he unpacked and settled in. Later that evening he set up the laptop and emailed his business manager, telling him where he was, the phone number, and to contact him first thing in the morning. Several emails were sent to family and friends before he realized how tired he was. It had been a long drive and a long day. Stretching, he rose from the computer and decided it was time for a shower and bed. The phone woke him with a jolt. Somewhat disoriented he fumbled for the receiver, knocking it to the floor. Picking it up he said, "Hello." "Hello Bob, this is Jeff, did I wake you up? It sounds like it. "Hi Jeff, ah yes, I was sleeping. What time is it?" "It's 10 AM here, Bob. I got your email to call first thing in the morning, but I'm a little late." "Damn, I was dead to the world. I never sleep this late. Give me a few minutes and I'll call you back." He got up and dressed then put some coffee on while he gathered his thoughts. Drinking his morning cup, he called his business manager back and together they made some long overdue decisions. Business was good and getting better, his ducks were in a row, but his life felt empty. Bob filled his hours becoming familiar with the area and house hunting. Two months passed. The same families had owned most of the houses in and around Peaceful for years, some for generations. Few houses came up for sale and the ones that did, didn't suit him. He had made up his mind that he wasn't going to settle for just anything. There was a parcel of land he had been eyeing that sported a For Sale sign, and it was time to inquire about it. Gordon, the real estate broker told him he knew about that land. It was actually 15 acres and was now owned by the daughter of the previous owner who had willed it to her just before he died. She wanted to keep the house but was going to sell the five-acre parcel he had been looking at. "Only five acres? I was hoping it was more than that. Do you think she would consider selling more of the acreage?" "She might," Gordon replied. "I could talk to her for you." "I can talk to her myself. Is the house the little red the one that sits back off the road about one eight of a mile? I've seen it nestled among the grove of trees." "Yep, that's it, but she isn't there. She lives in Chicago. The house has been empty since her father died over a year ago. It's kind of run down and needs some fixing up. I don't know what she wants with it, but she won't sell." "May I have her phone number?" "Nope, she doesn't want folks bothering her. I'm sorry, you'll have to go through me, that's the way she wants it" "I see. How much does she want for the five acres?" Gordon looked it up and told him her asking price. Bob asked for a sheet of paper and began writing. When finished he handed it to Gordon and said, "Here, mail this to her or read it to her. I want to purchase nine acres and build a house on it. This is how much I'll pay for it. If she's interested, call me." Gordon looked the paper over. It was a letter of introduction with a more than generous amount offered for the land. "I sure will Bob and will get back with you after I talk to her." After leaving the real estate office he decided to ride out to the house and look it over, now that he knew it was empty. The house was fairly close to a dirt road that ran along one side. Since the For Sale sign was on the other end of the property, the land between this house and where he would build would remain empty. That's what he wanted, plenty of space, with his house right in the middle. Gordon was right, the house was run down, but not so much that it couldn't be fixed and made livable. If it was his he would tear it down and start over, but that was not his problem. It was a two story house, with newer dark red vinyl siding and black shingles on the roof. It made a bold statement. The windows were trimmed in white that had turned gray, probably dust from the dirt road, he thought. The doors were locked so he looked in the windows under the partially pulled shades. It was well kept and fully furnished with white sheets over everything. I don't know why a person would want to keep this when they don't live here, he thought, but that isn't my business. The longer he stayed in Peaceful the more he knew he belonged and was thankful he made the turn in the road that brought him there. He enjoyed the scenery, the people and the quiet. The slower pace was heaven compared to the rat race of the city. He would only need to fly to corporate headquarters three or four times a year. Even though he had excellent employees, he was very much the boss including making, minor and major decisions. The day to day business of taking care of business was easily handled wherever he was by phone or Internet. Living in a hotel was beginning to get him down and he longed for a place of his own. He wanted a big yard where he could experiment with plants and shrubs and landscaping. It was his passion. He would make his house a showplace. With that thought in mind he made daily trips to the property, taking measurements, sitting in his car staring at the empty space and seeing in his mind exactly what he wanted. In the evenings he drew up plans for the house, changing the plans over and over again until he knew exactly what he wanted. All he needed was the land. Two weeks passed and he had not heard a word from Gordon about the property, other than a phone call telling him he had given the information and the bid to the owner. He hadn't called Gordon, because he didn't want to appear overly anxious, but it was time to get this settled. Bob walked the short distance from the hotel to the office, walked through the front door and greeted Gordon. After shaking hands, Gordon said, "Have a seat Bob. I assume you're here about the property?" "Yes, I am. Have you had a reply from the owner?" "Miss Miller called this morning. She doesn't want to sell more than three acres, but has agreed to accept your offer, because she has no choice. To make a long story short, she needs the money. You're at the right place at the right time Bob." "That's wonderful news Gordon! How soon can this be finalized?" "As you know, inspectors have to inspect and surveyors have to survey, etc. etc. Papers need to be drawn up. What mortgage company or bank are you going with?" "Neither. Cash, always cash." "Well, that should simplify things. I'll get together with Miss Miller about the particulars and when the necessary papers are drawn up, you can show them to your attorney and all that's left for you and Miss Miller to do, is sign the dotted lines. I'll get right on it." "Deal. Thank you, Gordon." After shaking hands, Bob left the office a happy man. There was a spring in his step walking back to the hotel, the sun was shinning, the air was warm, the birds were singing. Life was good. Once in his suite he turned on the laptop and began a search for Architects in the area. After many days, and much research and many inquiries, he made an appointment to meet his choice of architects in person. He liked his choice and hired the man on the spot. He intended to get the show on the road immediately. Plans were drawn up, drawings made, with many visits to the property. Builders were contacted and hired. He spent hours a day at the site pitching in, using muscles he hadn't used in a very long time. Ten months later his house was completed and it was move in day. It had been a little over one year since arriving in Peaceful. A year of keeping his mind and body busy, and a year of healing. He still thought about his wife and his loss and missed her terribly. Another year passed and during that year he concentrated on the landscaping. He decided what he wanted and did all the work himself with suggestions from the local nursery. He put in a small vegetable garden a reasonable distance from the deck. The deck was large and contained pot after pot of flowers and ferns, one of his favorite plants being Viola tricolor, Johnny-Jump-Up. Wisteria Floribunda laced through the latticework covering the deck, it's Lilac like fragrance permeated the air when flowering. Variegated yellow and orange Marigolds bordered the garden, a natural insecticide against garden pests. To the right of the garden was a shed that housed the tractor and garden tools, on the roof perched a Blue Heron weather vane. The shed had a window on each side with window boxes. This year he had planted Lobelia erinus, Basket Lobelia, that trailed deep purple flowers with white eyes. Their rich color formed a vivid contrast against the white paint of the shed. Beyond the garden was a small grove of two dwarf apple trees and two dwarf peach trees that would produce succulent fruit in a few short years. His yard was sod covered, in perfect condition with shade trees dispersed in perfect balance. A shady area was created with a stone patio and comfortable seating. Hosta fortunei, Fortune's Plantain Lily, was picked for this area for it's striking foliage that was placed so it reflected in a water feature. The trickling water was relaxing on hot summer days, when he sat to rest while working in his rose garden that was close by. Roses were his passion. He belonged to a rose society that he supported financially. What he couldn't find in the Peaceful Nursery, he imported from around the world. His collection included, the Peace rose, Margaret Chase Smith, Dr. Brownell, Victory, Lily Pons, Curly Pink, Helen Hayes, Arctic Flame. Nastarana, also known as Persian Musk Rose, with it's pink buds and white flowers whose fragrance is earthy and intoxicating. Climbing roses included: Blue Moon, Everblooming Blaze, Joseph's Coat, and Show Garden. Rather than fences he used rose hedges, which are excellent habitat for song and game birds, among them, Eutin, Rosa Rugosa, Hansa and the very fragrant Nearly Wild Rose, which grows only three feet tall and makes a flowering ground cover for problem areas. He experimented with Hydranga macrophylla, alkaline soil for pink flowers and acid soil for blue flowers and kept the soil mulched with peat moss to maintain the blue color. His home had turned into the showplace he wanted it to be. CHAPTER 2 "Hello Adrian." It was Rita's voice that brought him back from daydreaming of the past two years. He turned in the direction of her voice and saw a stunning woman sit down on a stool across the counter from where Rita stood. She was tall, with a good figure, shorter blonde hair with soft curls, and stylishly dressed in blue jeans, heels and a short expensive looking pink brocade jacket. He could just barely smell her expensive perfume. What ever it was suited her. "My goodness, it's been a long time, you're as pretty as ever, how are you Dear?" "Hello Rita, thank you. I'm doing good, how have you been, still ornery as ever?" "Ha ha, you bet I am, too old to change now." "The town looks the same, I don't think Peaceful will ever change. Almost everything is as it was when I was a kid growing up here." "The towns the same," said Rita, "But there's been some changes outside of town, especially next door to you're Pops. Wait until you see what your new neighbor has done with those empty acres. Everyone here was sad when your Pop died, such a nice man." "Thank you, Rita." "Are you back here to do something about the house, Adrian?" "I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do with the house, Rita. Live in it for a while, until I decide what I'm going to do with my life. I've taken a leave of absence from work, in case I decide to go back, my job will still be there. I'm thinking about opening a Fabric Shop and Seamstress Service here in Peaceful." "That's a good idea, Honey! It will be nice having you back here for good." "I saw that Gordon is still in the Real Estate Business. As I drove into town, I saw a brand new sign in front and he's changed the color of the building." "Shoot, Gordon will always be in business! He loves what he does, and it's about time he spent some money fixing that place up. The tight wad! I'm sure he'll help you find a nice place for you're shop if you decide that's what you're going to do." "Well, when I decide for sure, I'll talk to him." So this is Miss Miller, Bob thought. I'm going to have a neighbor this summer. A pretty neighbor. Rita looked up and saw Bob looking at them. "I want you to meet someone, Adrian. Come on over here, Bob." He unwound his tall frame from the booth he was sitting in and walked over to the counter. "Bob, I want you to meet Adrian Miller, you bought the property from her. Adrian, this is Bob Ellis, your new neighbor. This is the man who has made a show place out of the land he bought from you." "How do you do Mr. Ellis? Nice to meet you." Her smile was brilliant. He took the hand Adrian held out to him and said, "My pleasure Miss Miller. I couldn't help but overhear you tell Rita that you're spending the summer here. I hope you don't mind my asking how long has it's been since you've been back to Peaceful?" "I don't mind at all, Mr. Ellis. It's been 3 years since I've been home." "I drive over to you're father's house once in a while just to check up on it. It needs some fixing up. If there's anything I can do for you, please let me know.' Thank you, Mr. Ellis for doing that, I appreciate it." "You're very welcome, Miss Miller and please call me Bob, after all we're neighbors." "Only if you will call me Adrian, Bob." "Deal," he replied. I better go, I have some things from the Nursery in my truck that need to be planted today. Once again, very nice meeting you, Adrian" He walked to his truck, got in and before driving away, took one last look at The Nook, and smiled. "Well, Adrian," Rita said, "What do you think of Bob?" "He appears to be a very nice man, Rita." "Yeah he is, and ain't he a hunk? A Widower too. Why if I wasn't so old he'd be in big trouble!" "Are you trying to tell me something, Rita?" "Well, Adrian you're a pretty woman, but you aren't getting any younger, young lady. How old are you now, pushing 30?" "Wow, you're good Rita! I'm 29 and will be 30 on June 24th." CHAPTER 3 Bob went home and planted his nursery stock and thought about his new neighbor. He hadn't been attracted to a woman since his wife died, but seeing Adrian's beautiful gentle smile and touching her when shaking hands had stirred something in him. Her face was distinctive and pretty, her skin milky white and flawless, and her unruly crop of curly blonde hair made her look impish in an endearing way. The tight fitting blue jeans didn't hurt either. A Sweet Tender Love Story for Bob That place of hers needs a lot of work, he thought, heavy work a woman might have a hard time doing. I'll give her a few days to settle in, then take some tools with me and go over and see what help she might need. Adrian turned onto the long driveway and when she saw the house, tears welled up in her eyes. Happy memories of childhood flooded back to her when she spotted the old swing still hanging from the big branch of the Elm tree. It was as if she could see the ghost of a happy little girl being pushed high by her daddy. Her daddy, the one man she could always count on, the one she turned to when the going got tough, the one man she missed terribly. She was in Europe when she got word that he had died suddenly. It broke her heart that she couldn't get back for his funeral, due to the weather no planes were flying when she needed one. She made a quick trip home when she could, and went directly to the cemetery, laid flowers on his grave and wept. She talked to him and told him how hard she tried to gethome for his funeral, she told him how much she loved him and how much she was going to miss him. Now she sat in her car looking at the house she was born in and raised. It was sad to see it is such disrepair. "This is going to need a lot of work and a lot of money," she said aloud. She noticed that the grass was sparse and the weeds had pretty much taken over, but it had been cut recently, by whom she didn't know, but she was grateful. Well I'd better get in there and see what's what, she thought. She pushed the trunk button on the door of her car before getting out, walked to the trunk and took out cleaning supplies. "I'll get my luggage later," she said to herself. She walked up the three steps to the porch and used her key to open the front door. A musty odor and semi-darkness greeted her. The furniture was still covered by the sheets her friend Betty had been kind enough to place there after her father's death. Except for the sheets everything looked the same as it had when she left Peaceful, the same furniture placement, the same pictures on the wall. She smiled when she recalled that her father didn't like change. Coming home was like coming back to the past. The first thing she did was walk from room to room raising the blinds and opening the windows. There was a soft breeze wafting in that ruffled the lace curtains in what used to be her bedroom. Looking out the bedroom window she saw for the first time the change Bob had brought to the property, his property now. She could hardly believe her eyes. It was beautiful! His house was almost a mansion, with several small outbuildings and stunning landscaping. Spring flowers bloomed everywhere and in every color. The sweet scent of hyacinth drifted in with the breeze. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply enjoying the aroma, and smiled. He's a magician, she thought. "Ok enough of this, I have to get to work. Where do I start?" Looking around her bedroom she said, "I might just as well start here, at least I'll have a clean place to sleep." She rolled up her sleeves and dug in. First she removed the linens from the bed and curtains from the windows along with the throw rug on the floor and took them to the laundry room. I won't be able to wash these until tomorrow when the utilities are turned on, she thought. Returning to the bedroom, she used the long handled dust mop to remove cob webs from the ceiling, walls and window sills, then went from room to room, up stairs and down doing the same thing. By the time she was finished it was dusk and the air coming in the windows was getting cool. Stretching her arms to the ceiling trying to get the kinks out of her back, she said out loud, "Looks like I won't be sleeping here tonight, I'll have to go to the hotel. Having said that she shut all the windows, found her purse, locked the door and was on her way to Peaceful. Adrian was back at the house early the next morning. Wandering through the house she decided that every room needed a good cleaning from top to bottom. It had been a long time since she had needed to do this kind of physical labor and her muscles were protesting from the work of the night before. Oh well, she thought, someone has to do it and that someone is me. She did what she could do without the water being turned on. As the morning wore on and it began to warm outside she opened the windows room by room. It was noon before she realized she was hungry and stopped working to fix a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which she made from the few non-perishable groceries she had bought the night before. As she sat down to eat she heard water flowing through the pipes. By the time she finished eating the electricity and gas had been turned on. "Thank goodness!" she said, "Now I can heat some water and start scrubbing this place." She worked through the day washing ceilings, walls, and floors in her bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, figuring those were the important rooms to function in and the other rooms could wait until the next day. After washing bed clothes, curtains and rugs, she carried all to her bedroom, made her bed, hung the curtains and placed the rugs on the freshly scrubbed hardwood floor. "One room completely finished and I can sleep in my own room tonight," she said out loud. "Tomorrow I'll clean the refrigerator, stove and cupboards, then the kitchen will be done." It was almost dark outside, she turned on the small lamp by her bedside that was placed on a small table in front of the window, and lay down on top of her bed covers intending to rest a few minutes, but fell asleep almost instantly. CHAPTER 4 Bob had been in his flower and vegetable gardens most of the day, weeding, digging and planting. Spring was a busy time for gardeners, but he loved the fresh air and getting his hands in the dirt. He stuck the shovel in the ground placing one foot on the metal edge and leaned on the handle surveying his work of that day. A dim light in the window across the way suddenly came on and caught his attention. Adrian's house. I'll go over there tomorrow, he thought, and offer my help. That place is pretty much a mess, I'm sure there's something I can do for her. With an audible sigh he pulled the shovel out of the ground, picked up his other tools, and headed for the shed to put them away. After his shower Bob went downstairs to the kitchen and took out the meal his housekeeper, Mrs. Higgins, had left in the warm oven for him before she left for the day. It was delicious as usual. After eating he walked into his library, sat in his brown leather easy chair, picked up his book and read until he was sleepy enough to go to bed. Upstairs in his master bedroom he turned off the light and walked across the large room to his bed, stopping at the window to take in a breath of fresh spring air. The dim light in the window at Adrian's house was still glowing. He stood for a few minutes almost like a statue staring at the lighted window and felt a longing he hadn't felt in a very long time. Adrian awoke the next morning to bright sunshine streaming in the window and the sound of birds chirping. Sometime during the night she had covered herself with the blanket, but didn't remember it. "I must have been dead to the world," she said, "and I'm famished!" Throwing the blanket off, she got out of bed, walked downstairs to the kitchen and turned on the coffee pot she had prepared the night before then back upstairs to shower. Once dressed, she ran a comb through her wet hair and decided against curling it or applying makeup. She would be working all day and it didn't matter. "No one's going to see me anyway," she said to herself, and went downstairs to fix breakfast. Hmmm, she thought, not much here until I buy groceries today. Guess its toast with peanut butter and jelly again. Just as she put bread in the toaster there was a knock on the kitchen door. She looked through the window and saw it was her neighbor, Bob. Oh no, she though, I look a fright! Too late, he had seen her. "Hello, Bob," she said as she opened the door. "Please come in." "Good morning, Adrian. I came over to ask what I could do to help you get settled. Did I come too early?" "Oh no, Bob, it isn't too early. I'm usually up long before this but I overslept." At that moment the toast popped up and Adrian went over to the toaster and took it out. Bob saw the peanut butter jar and guessed that was all she had. "Is that Breakfast?" He said. "Yes, afraid so, I'll be going into town to buy groceries today, would you like some and a cup of coffee?" "A cup of coffee would be great, but I'll pass on the toast and peanut butter. Will you allow me to take you to The Nook for a proper breakfast? It looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you and you need something more substantial than what you have here." "Thank you Bob, but I'll be fine with this, besides I look a fright and am embarrassed that you saw me this way." "Don't be. Please let me take you to breakfast. Tell you what. I'll sit here and drink my coffee while you get ready. Is it a deal?" She cocked her head sideways and looked at him, deciding what to do. "Thank you, yes it's a deal." Halfway up the stairs she looked back and saw him staring at her. "This won't take long. Enjoy your coffee." She smiled all the way to the bedroom. That is one fine looking woman, he thought, even fresh out of the shower. He perused the kitchen and noticed how run down it was. Taking his coffee cup he walked through the downstairs rooms evaluating what he saw. "Whew, this is going to take a lot of elbow grease," he said to himself, as he walked back to the kitchen. Adrian came down the stairs and said, "I'm ready." She was dressed in clean blue jeans and a light blue sweater that complimented her figure. The cut of her clothes exuded quality. She's beautiful, he thought, and she's wearing the same perfume she was wearing the other day. "That didn't take long," he said. "That's because I'm hungry. Let's go!" When they arrived at The Nook every parking place was taken. "Looks like a full house," said Bob. I'll park across the street." When they went inside the restaurant, Rita was walking toward them with a big smile on her face. "Well, hello, you two! Looks like you're just in time. I have one small table for two left in the back corner." "Hello, Rita, we'll take it," said Adrian. Rita walked them to the table, handed them a menu, and asked if they wanted coffee. They both said they did. "Rita," said Bob, "before you get our coffee, I want to ask you something." "Sure, Honey, what is it?" "Why do some waitress, including yourself, wear those pretty fanned out handkerchiefs on their uniform?" Rita looked at him and smiled broadly. "Well, Bob, that's a professional secret and if I tell you, I'll lose my waitress license." They all had a good laugh and Rita walked away to get their coffee. When Rita left, Adrian smiled at Bob. "This was a great idea, thank you for suggesting it." Every time she smiled at him his heart skipped a beat. "My pleasure, Adrian, what are your plans for the day? I know you're going to work in the house, but what exactly are you going to tackle next? "I have to clean the refrigerator, stove and cupboards, then come back to town and buy groceries so I have something decent to eat. Eating out gets expensive. I also need more cleaning supplies. The house is in worse shape than I first thought." "When you were upstairs I took a look around and saw some things that I can do to help. Some of the light sockets and faceplates need replaced and I want to check the wiring to make sure it's safe. Some of the cupboard door hinges need tightening, and you need a new doorknob and deadbolt for the kitchen door. I can get those things done while you clean the refrigerator, stove, and cupboards. Will you let me do that for you?" Adrian thought for a moment and said, "Bob, why are you doing this? "I'm offering my help because I'm your neighbor and neighbors help each other. Who knows, I might need your help someday, I also know there are things in that house that need a man's attention. Now don't get riled up, I know women aren't helpless, but you might not have the knowledge I have. I'm a handy dandy fix-it man! There are also things that require muscle, and I have more of that than you do. You can't move the refrigerator and stove by yourself to clean behind then. You'll need me there to help you pull them out from the wall and to put them back. We can stop at the hardware store after we eat and pick up the supplies I think we need." He certainly does have muscle, she thought, looking at his broad chest and thick arms while he talked. Not wanting him to catch her staring, she looked at his handsome face and said, "You're a busy man and I realize you have your own work to do, but you're right about all you said. Yes, I will appreciate your help, but you have to promise to let me help you in your garden to pay you back." "You don't have to pay me back, but I would love your help in the garden, sort of a woman's point of view." "We have a bargain," said Adrian. After eating breakfast and visiting with Rita and some customers they knew, they went to the hardware store and then back to Adrian's house. "I'll help you pull the appliances out from the wall before I get started. I'm going to turn the power off, but we need to unplug them to be on the safe side." "Ok, sounds like a plan to me she replied." He picked up his tool kit and the supplies from the hardware store. "If you need help before I'm done, just holler." "Oki doki," she said, and flashed him a big smile. He returned her smile with one of his own and they stood looking into each other's eyes longer then necessary. "Ah…. I'm going now," he stammered, then turned and walked out of the kitchen. Damn! What a dumb thing to say. I'm acting like a schoolboy. Several hours later he returned to the kitchen. It was almost 3 PM. "We've been working our tails off," said Adrian, "but the kitchen is finished, At last! How did the electrical work go." "Everything has been replaced that needed to be. I still have the kitchen to go, but other than that the electrical is finished. Let me help you put back the appliances and plug them in so the refrigerator will get cold for those groceries you have to buy today." "Speaking of food, I don't know about you, but I'm famished. All I can offer you is a cup of coffee and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I also have bananas. How about peanut butter and banana sandwiches on toast without, the jelly?" "Sounds good to me," he replied. "I'll tighten these few cupboard door hinges while you do that and replace those light sockets and face plates when we're finished." When they sat down at the kitchen table to eat and drink their coffee, he took a few bites of his sandwich and said, "I've never had a peanut butter and banana sandwich like this before. This is delicious! When we go to the grocery store, I'll pick some of this up to take home with me." They both chuckled. "Bob, you've been so helpful today. Taking me to breakfast then helping me with the house. You don't need to go grocery shopping with me, I can do that myself." "You will be buying a lot of groceries today to stock up, right?" She nodded her head yes. " I've seen you rubbing the back of your neck and sore arm muscles. You'll need help lugging all the bags in the house and I'd like to do that for you, but you're on your own putting them away!" They chuckled again and she agreed. "Adrian, do you mind if I ask some personal questions?" "Not at all, go ahead, ask away." "Are you going to fix this house up to live here just for the summer?" "Well it needed a good cleaning just to live here for the summer. I haven't decided if I'm going back to Europe or not. A lot depends on how things work out with my job." "That was my next question, what kind of work do you do?" "I have a Master's Degree in fashion design and went to Europe to become the worlds most famous designer," then giggled, but not in a funny way. "I wound up being a seamstress to several of the top designers while doing my apprenticeship. I observed what it meant to be a top fashion designer; the rat race, the pressure, making sure the right fabric was delivered on time to the right place, scheduling shows, dealing with the press, dealing with temperamental models, not to mention dealing with private clients. The designers have people, of course, whose job it is to coordinate all those things, but ultimately it is up to him to make sure everything is handled as it should be. I decided that wasn't for me. I would rather be a seamstress and work for myself, designing my own line of clothes on a much smaller basis. I had the plan, but not the money, so when you offered to buy the land at the price you offered, it gave me the incentive I needed to put my plan into action. I saved every penny I could for the next year and decided I had enough money to return home and try to set up my own dress and fabric shop. I know Peaceful is small, but I think I can make a go of it by offering seamstress services, sewing and quilting classes. That's what this summer is for. I've taken a leave of absence from my job so I'll have something to go back to if this doesn't get off the ground. I'm going to talk to Gordon at the real estate office about renting a small shop in town, if there is one that is." "It sounds like you've thought this through. It isn't easy setting up a business. There's buying inventory, advertising, location, location, etc. etc, and it takes a while to make a profit, but I'm sure you know these things." "Yes, I've done my research. Now it's your turn. How do you earn your living?" "I have my own business building oil rigs with headquarters in Texas. My business manager, Jeff and I, keep in touch daily via telephone and the Internet. I fly to Cooperate Headquarters every few months and I'm gone for a few days. My dad left me the company when he died and it has grown by leaps and bounds over the last ten years. I've been very fortunate and have invested my money well. That has allowed me to live my dream here in Peaceful." "What brought you to a little place like Peaceful?" He told her about his wife's death and all that happened afterwards. Adrian reached across the table and put her hand on his. "I'm so sorry Bob, I had no idea and certainly didn't mean to pry." "Thank you, Adrian. I've had a few years to adjust and I'm doing okay. My life is in Peaceful now and I'm happy." The sudden knock on the door startled them. Adrian got up from the table to see who it was. "Gary! My gosh this is a surprise!" A tall, well built man burst through the door, pulled Adrian into his arms, lifted her feet off the floor and twirled her round the room, both of them laughing. Bob didn't like it. He had an uneasy feeling watching the man hold Adrian in his arms. I'm jealous! I've only known her for a few days and I'm jealous! Gary put her down and held her at arm's length, saying, "You're more beautiful now than you were before you left Peaceful! I heard you were in town and living here at your dad's place. I sure was sorry to hear of his passing. A lot of people turned out for his funeral, and everyone had nice things to say about your dad." "Thank you, Gary. Please come in and let me introduce you to my neighbor. Gary this is Bob Ellis, who lives in that beautiful place next door, and Bob, this is my old high school sweetheart, Gary Beal." "Hey, watch that 'old' stuff!" he said, as he shook hands with Bob. "Nice to meet you, Bob, I've watched your place go up and admire the work you've done. It's beautiful." A Sweet Tender Love Story for Bob "Nice to meet you Gary, and thank you for the compliment." "Oh, you're welcome." "Can I get you some coffee, Gary?" Adrian asked. "No thank you, Adrian, I don't have time now. I was passing by the house and saw vehicles in the driveway so thought I'd drop in and say hello. But will take a rain check" "You got it. Stop in anytime," she replied. As Gary walked out the door he looked at her and said, "Welcome home, Adrian." "Thank you Gary, it's good to be home." Bob was happy to see him leave, but had to admit to himself that he seemed to be a nice person. "Nice fellow," he said. "Yes, he is a nice fellow. We've known each other since grade school and he's been a good friend." Bob wondered if they had been more than good friends and sweethearts, but he didn't ask her. He rose from the kitchen table and said, "I'm going to have to turn the power off while I fix the two sockets here in the kitchen, but will turn it back on when I'm finished. It won't take long. Then we can be on our way to the store." "Ok, while you're doing that, I'll go upstairs and freshen up a bit." He watched her blue jean clad bottom sway back and forth as she climbed the stairs and Felt himself harden. "I want to kiss her," he said under his breath, "I want to hold her in my arms and kiss her." He imagined how soft her lips would be and how good she would feel in his arms. With a sigh, he started to work. Adrian sensed his eyes on her as she ascended the stairs and felt giddy. She knew he was attracted to her and knew she was attracted to him. It had been nice spending the day together and she was grateful for his help. More importantly, she enjoyed his company and was comfortable with him. He was handsome and had a great body. She wanted to feel his arms around her. She wanted to feel his lips on hers. "Adrian, what's wrong with you?" she said aloud. "This is the second time you've seen this man and you're thinking in those terms. Get a hold of yourself, girl!" When finished freshening up she went downstairs and said, "I'm ready when you are." "I'm ready," he replied. ***** After helping her carry groceries into her house, he said, "I'll be on my way now, Adrian. I'd like to help in any way I can, be it with your house, or with your business plans. I might be able to come up with some cost cutting ideas for you." "Thank you Bob, for all your help today, I appreciate it so much and I very much enjoyed your company. After I talk with Gordon and see what's what in Peaceful, I might be coming to you for those ideas, and don't forget, I want to help in your garden." "I won't forget, Adrian. I enjoyed spending time with you today too. Let's do it again sometime, when work isn't involved." They laughed, and she said, I'd like that Bob." After he left she leaned against the closed kitchen door and smiled. Then humming to her self she started the task of putting the groceries away and getting her kitchen in order. When everything was where she wanted it to be she looked around and was pleased with her progress. "Now with the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom finished, I can finally function and tackle the rest of the house at my leisure." Before going to bed that night, she stood in front of her bedside table and turned out the little lamp. Looking out the window she saw a light in an upstairs room of Bob's house. Suddenly he came into view, and she watched as he walked around what she thought must be his bedroom. In moments, the light went out. Sighing she lay on her bed and wondered what she was feeling inside. She replayed part of the day in her mind, concentrating on what he had said during the day, how he had looked at her, and how much she was attracted to him physically. She felt herself grow wet and smiled sweetly, while drifting off to sleep. CHAPTER 5 "Well hello, Adrian," said Gordon, "Rita told me you were back in town, nice to see you." "Thank you, Gordon. It's nice to be home. I hadn't realized how much I missed Peaceful." "Well, it's just about the same as when you left, but growing some. More people have moved here, and speaking of that, how do you like the changes in your property?" "It isn't my property anymore, Gordon, but Bob has made a beautiful difference in what I see when I look out my windows. He's transformed it into a real show place. I haven't been inside his house yet, but I imagine it's beautiful too." Gordon looked at her and smiled. "So it's Bob is it? You've been home a few days and already on a first name basis with your new neighbor?" "Oh stop, Gordon," she said with a chuckle, "If I know Rita, she's told you he took me to breakfast and helped me with some repairs in the house. Not much gets past her." "You're right about that," he replied, "She knows just about everything there is to know about everyone." They both laughed. "She also told me you might be looking for a little shop to rent or buy. Is that right?" "Yes," said Adrian. "When I was living here I know there were many women who made quilts or made clothes for their family and themselves, but they had to travel 25 miles to Dayville to buy yard goods. I want to open a fabric shop, slash seamstress service, and offer sewing and quilting classes. I hired a firm this morning to check out the feasibility and business potential of such a shop in Peaceful, given the small population. I have to be sure I can make a living here. Just in case they give me the go ahead I want to know I'll have a building to open for business." "I see," said Gordon, "Give me an idea of where you'd like this shop to be located." "Right here on Main Street if possible," she replied, "But I've been looking on my own and I didn't see anything empty." "That's because there aren't any places empty right now. Even if there were, it would be more expensive then if you rented or bought a place on a side street. If you put up a big sign and advertise well, people will find it. Peaceful isn't that big," he chuckled. "That brings up another question, do you want to rent or buy?" "I don't want to buy until I know I can make a go of it, and I realize that will take a couple of years. If possible I would like to rent with the option to buy, a portion of the rent going toward the purchase price." "Okay," he said, "That gives me more to work with. If I can find something how soon do you want to occupy?" They discussed the particulars, including price and timeline. "All right, Adrian, I'll see what I can come up with and get back to you. What's your phone number?" "I won't have a phone until tomorrow, Gordon. I'll call you then and give you the number." They said their good byes, shook hands, and she was on her way home. Bob was sitting in The Nook sipping his coffee and looking out the window when he saw Adrian drive by and stop at the real estate office. It had been a few days since he'd worked in her house. He watched her get out of the car. She was dressed in a navy blue business suit that looked like it had been made for her. Of course it was, he thought, she told me she makes her own clothes. Navy blue high heels and matching purse completed the ensemble. Her short blonde curls were just long enough to bounce when she walked. She's drop dead gorgeous, he thought to himself. He didn't need the help, but decided he would stop by her house on the way home and ask her if she could help in the garden today. He enjoyed her company and wanted to get to know her better. Who am I kidding? I want much more than that, he thought He waited until he saw her leave the office and decided he would give her a five-minute head start and hoped she was going right home. When she arrived there was a truck in her driveway, Gary's truck. He was sitting inside the cab reading the newspaper. When he saw Adrian pull in, he laid the paper aside and got out of the truck to wait for her. She smiled to herself as she drove the long driveway to the house remembering the good times they had had together. They were in love in high school. Thinking they would be together forever, they had given each other their virginity the night they graduated. That had been twelve years ago and it was still a sweet memory. They both had a job that summer, and that didn't leave them much time, but had made love at every opportunity. "Thank goodness for the pill!" she said aloud. The end of summer came and so did their romance. Gary had a full ride football scholarship to a prestigious college in the East and she attended State College. They kept in touch via letters and telephone, but eventually the letters and phone calls became fewer and further apart. He went into the military as an officer after graduation and Adrian went to Europe after earning her master's. Gary smiled and waved to her as she approached the house and she waved back. He was an imposing figure standing in her driveway waiting for her. Tall and muscular, he was dressed in dark tan dress slacks, a lighter tan dress shirt with a dark tie that matched his slacks, and dark brown shoes. He wasn't a handsome man, but easy on the eyes. He opened the car door for her. He always was a gentleman, she thought. When she stood up, he looked her up and down, gave the wolf whistled and said, "Wow, look at you. You're a beautiful woman, Adrian." "Thank you, Gary, and look at you, all dressed up." "Thank you. I had some business to take care of and thought I'd stop by and see you on the way home." "Come on in," she said, "I'll put on a pot of coffee." "I have a better idea, since we're both dressed up let me take you to dinner. We can drive to Dayville and I'll take you to the big new fancy restaurant there." "Dayville has a fancy restaurant?" "Yes, you'll be surprised how the city has grown." Adrian thought for a minute before answering. Do I accept or not? I'm over Gary and don't want to start anything with him again. Listen to me, he might not want that either. Almost as if reading her mind, he said, "Come on, Adrian, say yes. It's just dinner and we can catch up on each other's lives." "Okay," she replied, "but come inside for a minute while I freshen up." Bob started to pull in Adrian's driveway when he saw Gary's truck parked next to her car. He backed onto the main road, scowled and said aloud, "He's not wasting anytime, is he? Damn, Bob, what's wrong with you? They're old friends and you are the new guy in town. Get a hold of yourself!" He drove the short distance to his house, pulled in the driveway and said, "I shouldn't have waited so long to get back to her." That evening he couldn't get his mind off Adrian. It had been that way since he first laid eyes on her. I'm not going to lay back and do nothing, he thought. Dammit, that woman is under my skin! He looked out his window at her dark house a number of times, and decided to read until he knew she was home safely. Putting his book aside sometime later, he looked again just in time to see the light turn off in her bedroom window. Satisfied, he went to bed. CHAPTER 6 The next morning Bob was up early. He called the telephone operator, asked for Adrian Miller's phone number and was told she didn't have phone service. "How can she not have a phone?" he said aloud. More than a little annoyed. After checking his email and talking with Jeff, he showered, dressed and was on his way to Adrian's house. When he arrived he saw a vehicle from the telephone company in the driveway. He got out of his truck and walked to the front porch just as Adrian and the telephone tech walked out the door. The tech continued to his truck and drove away. "Hello Bob, this is a nice surprise," she said. "Good morning, Adrian. Does this mean you have phone service now? I called the operator earlier this morning for your number and she said you didn't have one." "I do now," she said, "Come on in and I'll give it to you over a cup of coffee." Bob followed her into the house, watching her jean clad bottom sway from side to side. Is she trying to seduce me? Or am I imagining it? If she is, it's working. Her perfume wafted past his nose and he closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. Opening his eyes, he blew out a long silent breath through pursed lips. When in the house he shut the door. Adrian knew that men looked at women's behinds when walking behind them and she deliberately put an extra swing in her walk. Why am I doing this? This isn't like me. I don't tease like this. What's happening to me? She had to admit to herself, that when she saw him walking up the steps, something came over her. She wanted him to make love to her, plain and simple! She wanted to feel his strong arms around her and feel his lips on hers. She wanted to see him naked. She wanted to feel his skin on hers. She wanted to feel him inside her. She felt herself grow wet. It had been over a year since she had made love. While in France she had a live in lover for almost two years. She knew she wasn't in love with him nor he with her, but they were comfortable with each other, enjoyed the same things, and fulfilled each other's physical needs. One day she came home from work early and he was making love to another woman in their bed. After she confronted him they decided to go their separate ways. Now, here she was lusting after her neighbor. Slightly embarrassed with her thoughts, she felt herself blush. "Have a seat, Bob. I'll get a pencil and paper and write my phone number down for you." Bob decided to go to the kitchen since they were going to have coffee. He felt nervous energy and was picking up some strange vibes from Adrian as well. When she entered the kitchen she found him filling the teakettle with water. When he heard her footsteps he turned from the sink, set the kettle on the stove, and turned the gas on. "Do you have tea bags? I'd really rather have tea if you don't mind." "I don't mind at all. Tea sounds good." She walked to the cupboard, took down the box of teabags, two cups and a teapot, and set them on the counter next to the stove. She placed 3 teabags in the teapot and turned to face him. "Here's my number, Bob." Bob reached out to accept the piece of paper she offered and placed it in his shirt pocket. "Thank you, Adrian." "You're welcome." They both felt the tension in the room, and were uncomfortable with the formality of the conversation "Adrian, I came here this morning to ask if you were free today to come over and help plant some new things I bought at the nursery yesterday, and I'd like to show you the inside of my house. Are you available?" She thought that would be an excellent way to work off some sexual frustration and she wanted to see his house. "Yes Bob, I'm free today and would love to see your house and help you plant." "Great," he said. "How about we forget the tea and go now? I'm sure Mrs. Higgins will prepare refreshments." "Okay, but I have to phone Gordon first and give him my phone number." While she did that, he turned off the stove, removed the teabags from the teapot, and placed them back in the box, and placed everything into the cupboard. "Ok, I'm ready," she said, as she took car keys out of her pocket. "I'll drive myself over, that way you won't need to bring me back home later." "It isn't that far and I don't mind driving you back." "Ok. If you're sure." "I'm sure. I turned the stove off and put everything away." "Oh, thank you, that was nice of you." "You're welcome. Shall we go?" They walked out of the house, Adrian first. Bob locked and closed the door. He watched her behind again as she went down the steps and walked to her car. I seem to have a fixation on her behind, he thought to himself. Adrian felt his eyes on her as she walked in front of him and smiled. He opened the car door for her and shut it when she was inside. Walking to the driver's side he opened the door, sat down and smiled at her. She smiled back and he drove the short distance to his house. His driveway, like hers, was long, and the house well off the road that ran past their houses. One section of the driveway went straight to the back yard and another made a circle to the right in the front of the house, providing access to the front door. The middle of the circular driveway was landscaped with grass and a shade tree was placed in the center. The house was big and she was impressed. My house would fit into one fourth of this, she thought. It was red brick with two and a half stories. Windows were balanced equally upstairs and down, with fewer windows on the main floor, but much bigger than the second floor windows. One tall, wide window reached from above the front door to the top of the second floor. The windows were flanked by white shutters, except for the tall, wide window above the front door. The brick arched entryway was spectacular. It was huge, with two large ebony painted doors adorned with brass doorknockers and doorknobs. Large brass lanterns guarded the archway of the entry. A matching brick sidewalk led from the driveway to the front steps and porch that were also brick. Bob drove into the circular driveway. He got out of his car, walked to her side and opened the door for her. He held out his hand to her and she placed her hand in his as he helped her out of the car. She had seldom been treated with such courtesy and respect. When their hands touched, her heart melted. "Welcome to my home, Adrian." "It's absolutely beautiful, Bob!" "Thank you. It's my pride and joy." "You're welcome," she replied. "I can understand that. I've never seen a house quite like this one." "That's because it's one of a kind. I drew the plans and with some refinement by my architect, this is the result." "Mr. Ellis, you're a talented man." "Thank you, Miss Miller. That means a lot to me, coming from you. Come on let's go inside and I'll give you the grand tour." He held her arm as they walked up the steps and onto the porch. Taking a key from his pocket he unlocked one of the large doors then held it open for her to. Once inside he shut the door. Bob remained silent as Adrian surveyed his home as if in awe. Few people had been inside his home, but those that did all had the same amazed expression when first entering, the same expression that Adrian wore now. She stood in awe at what she saw. The extra wide hallway ran from the front door to the backdoor. The floor was finished with large blocks of black and white marble placed on the diagonal. The ceiling rose to the second floor. Six large crystal chandeliers hung spaced evenly from front to back of the great hall. Adrian thought how beautiful they must look from outside when lighted at night, looking through the tall, wide window at the front of the house. Three quarters of the way down the hallway from the front door was the most beautiful, wide spiral staircase she had ever seen. It was placed close to the right wall and led to a loft overlooking the hallway. On the loft was a magnificent white grand piano. The loft not only overlooked the hallway but served as a walkway from one side of the upper floor to the other. Ebony spindles supporting a white railing ran along the parameter of the loft and two hallways. She saw three ebony colored doors on each side of the upstairs hallways. Adrian thought the bedrooms must be behind those doors. The walls and ceiling were painted a rich cream color. Potted plants with large green foliage were placed on the floor next to the walls the length of the downstairs hallway and one was placed next to the piano on the balcony. Various paintings hung on the walls. "Well, what do you think?" he said. "I don't know what to say, Bob. It's perfectly lovely. I'm speechless!" "Thank you, Adrian. I'm pleased you like it. Come, let me show you around." A Sweet Tender Love Story for Bob To the right of the foyer where they were standing was another ebony colored door. He opened the door and they stepped inside the room. "This is my library and office. I spend a lot of time here." Two walls were covered from floor to ceiling with bookshelves, made of a rich colored mahogany. Many books lined the shelves. The third wall at the end of the room wasn't a wall at all. It was made entirely of glass. A large desk with a computer and telephone was placed before the window. Along the fourth wall was a brown leather sofa and matching wing chair with ottoman. A small table with a lamp separated them. A perfect place to read on a rainy day, she thought. The floor was hardwood with a Persian rug in the center. "This room suits you, Bob." "Thank you. I like it. It's comfortable. Come on I'll take you to the kitchen and introduce you to Mrs. Higgins, my housekeeper." "You mentioned a Mrs.Higgins at my house before we left. I think I might know her." "Well, let's find out." Bob guided her to the kitchen that was across the wide hallway and at the back of the house. Mrs. Higgins was standing at the sink when they entered. "Hello, Mrs. Higgins, I have a guest with me who thinks she might know you." Mrs. Higgins turned to greet Bob and saw Adrian. "Hello, Adrian. I heard you were back and have seen the lights on in your house." She walked toward Adrian with outstretched arms and hugged her. "Welcome back, dear." "Thank you, Mrs. Higgins. How is Mary? We lost touch when I went to Europe." "Mary is fine. She married Don Hallon and they have two boys, nine and six years old." "That's wonderful! Mary always was sweet on Don." Turning to Bob, Adrian said, "Bob, Mrs. Higgins' daughter, Mary, and I were best friends in high school." "Mrs. Higgins," said Bob, "Adrian is going to help me in the gardens today. Would you mind putting together a pitcher of iced tea and a tray of those cookies I saw you baking earlier this morning?" "I'd be happy to, Mr. Ellis." "Thank you, Mrs. Higgins. We'll have the tea and cookies on the deck." "Very good, Sir." Taking Adrian by the arm, he led her out the kitchen door that overlooked the deck. They walked to the far railing and looked out over the gardens. "This is beautiful," she said. "Thank you. It's a work in progress. Do you see the flats of flowers on the deck steps?" "Yes, they're lovely. Marigolds and petunias, aren't they?" "Yes, ma'am. In every color I could find. Planting them is our project for the day, Miss Miller. "Let's get to it, Mr. Ellis." Bob put the flats of flowers in the wheel barrow along with two pair of gloves and the needed tools, then they walked to the garden where they would be planted. They decided what plants would go where by placing them on the ground where they thought the flowers would best accentuate the garden. Before planting, they walked to the deck where iced tea and cookies were set out for them. They talked for a long time learning more about each other, joking and laughing, enjoying each other's company. Bob looked at his watch. "Adrian, do you have any idea what time it is?" "No, I sure don't." "We've been sitting here for two hours. Look at the sky in the west. I think it's going to rain, time to plant." "Let's do it!" They walked to the garden. Bob rolled up his shirt sleeves, put on his gloves and went to work, Adrian beside him. She couldn't keep her eyes off his arms. She knew he was muscular, but with his sleeves rolled up she saw just how muscular. His biceps were bulging and forearms massive. She imagined touching them and feeling them holding her. Thick black hair from his chest peeked out the top of his shirt. Her eyes wandered to his handsome face. His head was down but he was smiling. Embarrassed, she concentrated on what she was supposed to be doing. They talked as they worked and Bob complimented her on her knowledge of plants. She smiled sweetly at him in appreciation. He had a hard time keeping his eyes on the job at hand. Adrian on her knees with her jean-clad bottom pointing to the sky was almost more than he could bear. When she rounded the corner of the garden, she was bending over facing him and he could see her cleavage and half her breasts as her pullover top gaped at the neckline. He couldn't take it anymore. His balls were aching and his cock was hard. He stood and turned away from her while adjusting his jeans and looking at the sky taking a few deep breaths before turning back to face her. "I think we better leave the rest of this. I want to show you the rose garden before it rains. They won't bloom until June but you can get a good idea of what it will look like." He tucked her arm in his as they walked and continued that way during the rose garden tour. She made no effort to remove her arm from his. The fragrance of her perfume wasn't lost on him. It was driving him crazy. I think I'm falling in love with her, he thought. How can that be? We barely know each other and yet those feelings are with me. She's intelligent and pretty and sweet and kind. I enjoy her company and think of her night and day. I know she likes me. I see how she smiles at me and see how she looks at me. Her jean-clad bottom is sexy as hell and I could swear she teases me with her walk. Dare I kiss her today? It feels good to be near him Adrian mused. I have thoughts about him that I shouldn't have. We've known each other such a short time. He's handsome and polite and big and strong and has been so kind to me. Is this gratitude I'm feeling or something else? He's on my mind constantly. I love his company and his sense of humor. Could I be falling in love with him? That's crazy! What am I thinking? Do I want him to kiss me? Yes, I want him to kiss me and hold me in his arms. She snuggled closer to him as they walked, her right breast pressed into his arm. His cock came to life the instant he felt her pull him closer and her breast touched his arm. They walked a few more steps to the small bench near the water feature. The trickling water was soothing. Before they sat down, he turned to face her. They looked at each other and Adrian's eyes lowered to look at his lips. He put his hand under her chin and lifted her face to his. "I'm going to kiss you now, Adrian. I'm going to make love to your lips with mine." "Please do, Bob." He slowly lowered his lips to hers and brushed them lightly with his. He looked at her and saw her eyes were closed. She looked like an angel. He held her face in both hands and brushed them once again with more pressure-then kissed just her top lip then the bottom. The tip of his tongue traced each lip and she softly moaned. He was lost! He drew her to himself and held her tightly before giving her a full mouth kiss. His body responded quickly. He wanted to possess her! She had never been kissed quite like that before. Barely there butterfly kisses. Soft. Sensual. When his tongue traced her lips it was a searing heat that traveled to her very core. His strong arms enfolded her and she clung to him returning his hot kisses. They couldn't get enough of each other's lips and tongues. She felt his hardness pressing into her belly and felt her own wetness. She wanted him. She wanted all of him! He broke the kiss, holding her close to himself, her head on his chest, his cheek lying gently atop her head, one hand brushing her soft hair away from her face, neither one speaking, both enjoying the closeness and warmth of each other's bodies. "Adrian, I don't understand these feelings I have for you. I haven't been interested in another woman since my wife died. You're on my mind constantly. When I'm not with you, I wonder what you're doing, where you are and whom you're with. I look across the property at night to your bedroom window and wait to go to bed until I see your light go out and know your safely home. We've only known each other for a short time and I don't begin to understand how this can happen so fast, but I think I'm falling in love with you." She didn't say anything at first. She just took in and processed what he had said. She was thrilled and felt her eyes grow hot with impending tears, tears of happiness. How could this be, this wonderful man in love with me, in such a short time? "Bob, I don't understand this either. I share some of the same feelings. I think about you when I wake up in the morning and you're on my mind when I fall asleep at night. But you're right, it's happening so fast. I don't know how this could be love. It's crazy. Maybe we're just attracted to each other and think it's love. Whatever it is, I know one thing." "What's that, Adrian." "I want _____________" Thunder boomed! The dark rain cloud over head let loose its contents, drenching them. Hand in hand, they ran for the house. CHAPTER 7 By the time they reached the house they were soaked to the skin, rain dripping off their clothes and bodies, feet squishing in water logged shoes. "Wow," said Bob. "What a downpour!" Adrian looked at Bob. His clothes were glued to his skin and she could see the shape of his muscled body, his black chest hair matted and glistening. I didn't think I could be any wetter, she thought, but I am. Wet hair was plastered to his forehead and raindrops fell off the end of his nose and chin. She began to laugh and he followed suit. He tried to keep his eyes off her body but it was impossible, even through his laughter. Her rain soaked clothing revealed every luscious curve and the thin cotton pullover top she wore concealed nothing. Her breasts jiggled as she laughed and her nipples were hard from the cool rain. His cock responded. Adrian saw his arousal. Laughing ceased and she went to him, lay her head on his chest and wrapped her arms around his body. Bob held her close, feeling her hard nipples against his chest. He felt her shiver. "We need to get out of these wet clothes, Adrian. You're shivering." He picked her up in his arms and carried her through the house and up the stairs to his bedroom suite, leaving a trail of water on the floor. He opened the door to his bedroom, carried her across the large room and set her down in the luxurious bathroom. "I'll bring a robe for you. Then you get those wet clothes off and take a hot shower. I'm going to do the same in the guest bathroom." He was gone for a few seconds and returned with a clean white terry cloth robe. Adrian didn't waste any time getting out of her wet clothes and stepping into the shower that was big enough for two or three people. Water came from jets placed in various parts of the marbled walls and ceiling. She stood under the warm water until no longer feeling cold. After turning off the water she stepped out of the shower onto a heated rug and a heat-o-lator in the ceiling forcing warm air down to her wet body keeping her warm. "This feels wonderful," she said aloud. "What luxury!" After drying herself, she put on the thick terry cloth robe, towel tried her hair and let her short blonde curls spring free to air dry. She opened the door and stepped into his bedroom. It was as beautiful as the rest of the house. The walls were painted light cerulean blue with cream colored ceiling and matching carpet. Along one wall was a king size bed covered with a bedspread that matched the draperies hanging on either side of large French doors that led to a balcony. Matching nightstands and lamps flanked each side of the bed. Two paintings hung above the massive headboard, to the side of the French doors stood a small breakfast table and two chairs. A plush sofa and matching chair with ottoman covered in a cerulean blue and cream print fabric made up a seating arrangement across the room from the bed. A small table and lamp completed the arrangement. Bob knocked on the bedroom door. She walked across the room and opened it for him. He was standing in the hall wearing a matching white terry cloth robe and towel drying his hair. "May I come in?" With a sweep of her arm she said, "Yes, you may." Bob entered the room and walked past her to the couch where he sat down. Patting the cushion next to him he said, "Come sit next to me, Adrian." Adrian looked at him as she sat, his wet hair disheveled as he continued to towel dry it. He's so handsome, she thought. "Are you warm now?" he said. "Yes, but I think I must have used all the hot water. It felt so good standing there letting the hot warm me. I didn't want to get out." "You didn't use all the hot water. I did the same thing in the guest room shower." "We made a mess through the house coming upstairs. What will Mrs. Higgins think?" "Mrs. Higgins only worked half a day today and left at noon. I cleaned up the water before I took a shower." "You know, Bob, you didn't need to carry me up here. I could have walked." "You were shivering so badly, I wanted my body to keep you warm." Like I do now, he thought. "Adrian, you look so sexy in that robe." "So do you, Bob." He touched her hair with the back of his fingers, his hand dropping to gently hold the side of her face. He looked into her eyes, tilted his head and kissed her tenderly. She responded as he had hoped. His cock grew hard. I want this woman, he thought. I want her forever. After several passionate kisses she pulled away, placing her warm hand on his bare thigh that had worked its way from beneath his robe, his cock hard as steel at her touch. "Bob, do you remember what I was saying when the rain let loose and we ran for the house? "Yes, you were saying you wanted something." Unable to keep his lips off hers, he kissed her hungrily, then whispered, "What is it you want, Adrian?" Before she could answer, he took her into his arms and kissed her passionately, his tongue finding hers. They held one another tightly, seemingly unable to get close enough to each other. She reluctantly pulled back. Wet and breathless and with eyes closed, she lay her cheek on his and whispered into his ear. "I want you, Bob. I was saying I want you. I want all of you." He pulled back slightly and held her beautiful face in his hands, looking into her eyes. "Are you sure you want this, Adrian? Be very sure, because there is no turning back." "Yes, I'm very sure." She smiled beautifully at him, realizing she loved him. "I want you for more then just tonight, my darling," he said. "I love you. I want you forever." Tears spilled from her eyes and he brushed them away with his thumbs. He kissed her sweetly, with all the love for her he felt in his heart. When they parted, she saw tears in his eyes and kissed then away. "I love you, Bob," she said. "I love you." He picked her up and slowly carried her to his bed, laying her down gently. CHAPTER 8 Bob stood by the bedside straight and tall. Opening his robe he let it fall to the floor, his manhood fully engorged with the blood rapidly coursing through his body. Adrian's eyes moved from his handsome face to his broad shoulders and massive arms, the hair on his chest black and thick. They continued across his stomach tapering to his pubic hair. Growing out of his pubic hair was his long and thick member. It twitched upward when she stared at it with longing. Her attention dropped to his thick muscled legs then back up to his face completing her appraisal of his body. He was smiling at her. She suddenly became aware of how fast her heart was beating. "You're the most beautiful man I have ever seen," she said. He leaned over kissing her tenderly while untying her robe, then opened the robe and lay it aside exposing the front of her body to his perusal. Her beautiful breasts were firm with pink nipples and her stomach had just enough flesh to be appealing. Rounded womanly hips tapered to long perfectly shaped legs. Her pubic hair was blonde and curly like the hair on her head that he loved so much. "Oh no, my love, you are the beautiful one," he said. Adrian sat up and removed the robe from her arms. Lifting her bottom she pulled it aside and tossed it on the floor next to his. Their gaze locked. The storm outside the French Doors intensified. Lightening flashed followed by rolling thunder a few seconds later. Their gaze never faltered so intense was their focus on one another. It was as if the outside world had disappeared. Adrian spread her legs and held her arms out to him in invitation. He lay his body on hers supporting his weight on his forearms, his legs between hers. She could feel the hardness of his masculinity pressed between them. Bob lifted one hand and brushed the hair from her brow. "I love you, Adrian. I want to know every inch of your body. I want to learn what turns you on. I want to suckle at your breasts and taste the sweetness of your skin. I want to breathe in your womanly scent and taste you. I want to make love to your body, but more importantly, I want to make love to you, to all of you." He brushed her lips with his then kissed her tenderly and sweetly, the kisses becoming more passionate and more demanding. He placed his left leg on the bed outside of her right leg, and drew his right knee against her vulva. He could feel her heat and her moisture when she drew her left knee up and laid it on the bed, opening herself to him. He pressed harder and she ground herself against him, riding his knee. Adrian held him close to her body with her arms wrapped around his back and moaned. I'm so turned on, she thought! It's been too long since I've felt a man's naked body next to mine. Tears began to fill her eyes. "Oh, Bob, this feels so good! I'm going to come!" "Let yourself go, Baby, enjoy it." He rubbed his knee up and down as she ground herself into him, her hips lifting and rotating, faster and more urgently. She moved her arms from his back and placed them above her head grabbing each side of the pillow with her hands. When he began sucking her breast, she whimpered and arched her back to give him access. She was going out of her mind. Nothing mattered except what she was feeling at the moment. She felt like a wild woman. Grinding her hips, heart pounding, screaming as her orgasm took her over the edge. Bob didn't think he could get any harder, but he did. He felt her body tense, as she gave in to her orgasm and continued to suck her breasts as wave after wave racked her body. When she began to come down, he gently kissed her cheek and whispered, "That's it, Baby, relax now." Adrian wrapped her arms around him and clung to him, tears wetting his shoulder. "Bob, that was wonderful! I've neglected this part of my life far too long. I didn't think I was ever going to stop coming." "Baby, that's what I'm here for. This part of your life will never be neglected again." He kissed her mouth, the side of her neck, working his way to her breasts where he suckled gently at first then harder, pulling her nipples to their full length and nipping at them with his teeth. She whimpered as his nipple play sent shocks of electricity to her still engorged nether lips. He kissed her stomach and twirled his tongue around and in and out of her navel sending shivers through her body, his tongue leaving a hot trail to her pubic hair. "Pull your knees up, Adrian." He made love to the inside of her thighs, kissing them and licking with his tongue up and down their length coming close to her mound but being careful not to touch her there. Her female aroma was heaven to his senses and her soft moans told him he was pleasing her. "Let your knees drop now, Baby. I'm going to taste you." Bob's tongue licked the length of her moist slit lightly not yet opening the soft petals of her feminine flower. He licked and nibbled her engorged lips and tasted the juices from her orgasm on her matted pubic hair. Slowly he parted her lips with his thumbs and viewed her pink petals and clitoris. A Sweet Tender Love Story for Bob "Adrian, you're so beautiful." She glistened with wetness and he saw a small trickle seep from her vagina. His tongue reached out collecting her seeping nectar, savoring the heady treat. He heard her moan softly and continued his tongular assault, licking first one side and then the other, his tongue finding every nook and cranny but avoiding her erect clitoris. He smiled inwardly as he sensed she was moving her hips in an effort to bring his mouth into contact with her clitoris to sate her growing desire. Bob was careful not to allow just yet the contact she so craved, rather withholding that contact she so intensely desired, tormenting her by keeping away those tremendously pleasant sensations until the time of his choosing. She was desperate to feel his mouth on her clitoris, instead she felt his tongue enter her, swirling around touching all sides of her and it felt wonderful. "Baby, you taste so good. I want you to taste yourself." He lay atop her again and kissed her passionately, their tongues mating inside her mouth, his steely hard member pressed between them. He lightly kissed her eyelids, then her left cheek, and whispered into her ear, "I love your taste, Adrian, and your aroma is like ambrosia to me. I want to smell you in the morning before you ever get out of bed. I want to make love to you like you've never been made love to before. I want to make love to you in every way imaginable." "Bob, I want you so badly," she said. "Please make love to me now, please!" "I am making love to you, Adrian, slowly, savoring every inch of you. Do you feel how hard I am?" "Oh god yes! I want to taste you. I want to feel your hardness in my mouth." He could tell she was fully aroused and wanted release because she couldn't lay still, her body moving constantly. "Not yet," he said. "Not until you come again." She felt his kisses on her nipples, then nibbles, then hard sucking. She whimpered loudly. He was driving her out of her mind! "Bob, please, I need to come again!" "I know, Baby, I know." He left a trail of hot kisses and tongue licks from her breasts to her mound. Opening her, his mouth enveloped her hard nub and began to suck slowly. Her moans became louder and he knew she was almost ready. Using his thumbs, he pulled the hood back exposing her raw and sensitive clit and touched it with the tip of his tongue, holding it in place. His tongue felt like a hot poker! What is he doing to me, she thought? I've never felt anything like this before. She lay perfectly still enjoying the new sensation, even though it was driving her insane with need. Her clitoris was sensitive beyond imagination. No longer able to hold still she reached between her legs and held his head, fingers entwined in his hair. "Ohhhh, Bob, please suck my clitoris, please!" He did as she asked, picking up speed and intensity. He loved that she had captured his head and held it hostage between her legs, pushing his face into her womanhood. Her hips were moving frantically, her womanhood assaulting his mouth seeking to extract the greatest pleasure, and her moans filled the room. Smelling her heat and aroma was driving him crazy and he almost lost it. He didn't know how much longer he could hold out. He felt her go rigid, her legs lifting her lower body off the bed taking his head with her. She screamed and suddenly her body shook with a full body orgasm, her mind in an altered state of sublime bliss. She had never experienced an orgasm like that, never that earth shaking, never that intense, never that pleasurable. Every nerve in her body was alive with gratification and pure wonder at the sensations coursing through her very being. Adrian felt Bob kissing her and brushing wet hair away from her brow. She was suddenly aware of the perspiration that covered her body, the tears rolling down her face, and the pounding of her heart, his soft whispers soothing her. "Bob, what just happened to me? He laughed softly and said, "I think they call that an orgasm, Adrian." "Oh no, that was not any ordinary orgasm I've never felt anything close to that before. My whole body was alive with sensations, I thought I was going to explode into a million pieces" "I hope to bring you many more of them, my Love" He kissed her passionately. "Adrian, I'm so hot for you, Baby, I can't wait any longer. I have to have you now." He positioned himself over her as she lifted her legs high into the air and spread them wide. His penis throbbed and his testicles ached with need. He held himself up with one hand while the other hand guided it to the entrance of paradise. He placed the head inside her wetness and glided all the way in to his testicles. She was hot and wet and tight, her inner muscles grabbing him. He wanted to last for her; he wanted to feel himself slipping in and out of her. He didn't want it to end so fast, not this time, not their first time. God, she felt so good! He looked at her. Her eyes were closed, her mouth open, and her beautiful face wore the mask of pure ecstasy. Bob willed himself not to come, not yet! His steely hardness brushed places inside of her that she didn't know were there. Every expertly timed stroke in and out took her breath away. "Is this heaven?" she gasped. "This must be heaven!" "Adrian, it's heaven for me too, but I'm going to die if I don't come soon." Bob grabbed both her ankles and used them as levers, spreading her legs wider and forward, towering over her. He pumped hard and fast feeling his sac tightened against his body, seeming to linger in that in between zone of heightened arousal and climaxing. So intense was his orgasm, he cried out as each eruption of hot ejaculate exploded into Adrian's body. Bob thought that if heaven is a place of perfection and perpetual happiness, this most certainly must be a wonderful preview of what was to come. Totally exhausted, he lay atop her trying to keep his softening member inside her sweet womanhood. He didn't want to ever leave. Despite Bob's desire to stay in her with her soft feminine body wrapped around him, he gradually softened and slipped from her loving grasp. He lay on his back and gathered her into his arms. "I love you, Adrian." "I love you, Bob." The storm outside the French Doors raged on. Lightening lit the sky and illuminated the room where two lovers lay sleeping in each other's arms. EPILOGUE Adrian opened her fabric shop on Main Street in Peaceful. Utilizing Bob's expert business sense, it was a success from the day it opened. She was so successful that within six months she hired two self-reliable and trusted employees. Adrian worked four days a week Monday through Thursday, saving Friday and the weekend for Bob. Bob's business continued to thrive under his management from Peaceful. He still flew to Texas several times a year and when he was away, Adrian missed him terribly. Sometimes she was able to go with him and when she did, they had some glorious times. They spent time working in his garden during that summer and traveling to exotic places in the fall. The winter was spent cuddling and making love in front of his fireplace and making plans for the future. Bob and Adrian were married a year from the day they first made love. Adrian was beautiful in the wedding gown she made herself. Bob was quite handsome in black tie and tails. He gave her a necklace of rare Black Tahitian Pearls and earrings to match as a wedding gift. She told him she would give him his wedding gift later when they were alone. They took their vows on the loft standing next to the grand piano, surrounded by family and friends. A formal outdoor reception followed near the rose garden. Long before the reception was over Bob carried Adrian into the house, up the stairs and into their bedroom. Soft music being played by the orchestra drifted in through the French Doors as he set his beautiful bride on her feet. They looked at each other and smiled. Taking both her hands in his, tears began to form in his eyes as he said, "Adrian, I love you more then mere words can express. I promise I will never let you down. I will love you with all my heart until the day I die and even then, the vision that you are now, standing before me at this moment, will forever be with me. "Bob my sweet man, my husband." Tears rolled down her cheeks as she continued. "I promise my love for you is unending. My faith in you is unwavering. You are my heart. My true love, my everything." They clung to each other, tears of happiness flowing freely. Adrian whispered into his ear, "I want to give you your wedding gift now." She walked to the bedside stand, opened the drawer and took out a small gift wrapped box. Handing it to him, she said, "I'd like you to open this now, Bob." Bob untied the bow, removed the wrapping paper, and opened the box. It was a gold pocket watch. "There's an inscription on the back. Please read it aloud," she said. He turned the watch over and began to read. "My darling husband, you are going to be a father." Bob looked at Adrian with wonderment written on his face. "Adrian, are you sure?" "Yes, darling, I'm sure." "My love, you have given me the most precious gift any man could ask for." He smiled from ear to ear then lifted her off her feet and danced around the room with her in his arms. They consummated their marriage by making the sweetest love they had ever made. THE BEGINNING
