A legend told and retold by the Ancients, of our people who became wolves." The old woman's voice cracked as she spoke, holding a mysterious air as she wove her story. She was all wrinkled in the face her beady black eyes hidden in them. Her once black hair was now more white then black, though as one studied her they would know she was once very beautiful. She had high cheek bones, a tiny pointed chin and a delicate nose. Logan listened as the old woman spoke the tales seeping deep into his young fourteen year old heart. He was a tall lanky kid, not much meat on him per say but one could tell with some hard work and discipline he would grow into a strong man. He had dark intelligent eyes that always seemed to see beyond what was there. Even some of the elders would whisper about him in their council, this boy, he was destined, though for what they weren't quite certain. Around him other children sat and listened attentively to the old woman. They called her Old Sparrow, most of the children thought of her tales as just stories. But for some, they knew the stories carried truth to them. Logan glanced around and spotted four year old Fawn. She was a tiny little thing, slender, willowy, beautiful even now at her young age. She was very pale compared to the other children her skin a golden honey brown from playing out in the sun with the other children her age. He wondered idly if the tiny red head had wandered from her adopted mother's side again, snuck off yet again to come listen to Old Sparrow's stories. The thought made him chuckle and he reached over and tugged on one of her shiny red curls and whispered. "Does your Momma know you're here?" She squeaked a little in surprise then turned her big green eyes toward him and gave him that impish little grin he had come accustomed to seeing. She nodded at him then scooted closer leaning on his knee. "Yep Momma said I could come listen this time, she knew Old Sparrow was telling my favorite story today." She grinned speaking very well for one of her age. Then she held her tiny fingers to her lips and whispered. "Shhh, I don't want to miss any" Logan grinned and ruffled her coppery curls with affection then let his dark eyes return to Old Sparrow and listened to her story. "Long ago our People joined their spirits with that of Brother Wolf. Melding so that man and wolf were one. For a long time, our People had the instincts of the wolf, the since of smell, the keen eye sight, the incredible hearing. For a long time that satisfied both the People and Brother Wolf. But then Brother Wolf got restless, he wanted to run free, wanted to hunt, to wander. So Man and Wolf split. The People lived as humans while in the villages, but when they slipped off into the forests they became huge powerful wolves, running free. " She paused long and smiled at the children, her toothless smile causing a few of the children to giggle. They all knew what was coming next, they had heard the story a million times from the time they could walk. "The People and Brother Wolf were happy, content. That is until they began to war amongst themselves, competing against each other not just as wolves but as humans also and Brother Wolf saw that this was bad. He decided that his spirit should belong only to those worthy. So he took his long life, his incredible speed, hearing and sight away from those he felt did not deserve the honor. Where once the whole tribe was allowed to run with Brother Wolf, now only a select few were chosen. The strongest smartest males and females. These were set to protect their people. And they became known as the Pack. For many many years this worked well for the People and for Brother Wolf. But then The People once more started to war amongst themselves, fighting this time over the females. The human males wanted the strength of the Wolf females wanted their genes to be passed down their line rather then strengthening the lines of the Wolf Males. Brother Wolf was angered by this and with great sadness he took his spirit from the females. He spoke to the males of the Pack and told them, "From now on you will find your mate among the human females, you will know her when you meet her. It may take you years, centuries before you meet her but when you do neither of you will have a choice but to belong to each other." Brother Wolf's words saddened the People, and brought bitterness into the hearts of the Wolf Men. They separated themselves from the People turned their backs on them, most of them dying without ever finding their mates. Most of them choosing to live as Brother Wolf lives, Most of them disappearing for all time. Three had remained with the Villiage, The three youngest of the pack, not yet ready to leave their Mother's sides, or the arms of their loving families. They each grew to adult hood, became strong warriors, one by one finding their mates the youngest of the three not finding his until he had lived over two centuries. Each had strong families and so for each generation Brother Wolf's spirit lived among the people. As peace prevailed and the Pack no longer was needed to protect our people, Brother Wolf let his spirit sleep, kept himself hidden only coming to our Aide when it became necessary. For many generations he has hidden his spirit from us. But we know if the need arises, his spirit will awaken and meld and become one with the people again." The old woman grew quiet looking at each child in turn, her old eyes resting on the tall lanky Logan and the tiny little red headed Fawn. Her look became knowing and she smiled at them then shooed all the children from her Hut telling them it was time for her to get her rest. Logan stood in one motion and leaned down and swung the tiny pale girl with the coppery curls into his arms, depositing her onto his shoulders, grinning from ear to ear when he heard her giggle. "Come on Little One, time to return to your Mother." He headed off at an easy lope careful of the girl on his shoulders. He gave Maria Running Bird a lopsided grin when he arrived and swung Fawn from his shoulders and deposited the girl into her mother's waiting arms. "She behaved did she Logan? She did not ask too many questions this time?" Maria asked with amusement in her voice, twinkling in her dark eyes. Logan laughed and shook his head. "Not this time Mrs. Running Bird. She was very quiet and attentive." He reached down and ruffled Fawns bright curls then trotted off into the shadows. It was time for his evening run with the local boys. Fawn watched him go and then tugged on her mother's skirts and whispered. "One day Momma, he will be blessed with Brother Wolf's spirit." Maria looked down at her tiny daughter in amazement. This child who was not even filled with the blood of the People, this child who had not the memories, the histories of their People, this child who was born of the white people, this tiny red headed child had just foretold what only the elders could guess at. Maria did not doubt that her daughter was right, for even she could since it in the boy. But it made her wonder what type of trouble would be headed their way, What was coming that they would need Brother Wolf to protect them. Wolf Legends Ch. 02 Chapter 2 - Becoming a Man ((Disclaimer: Fair warning, This story, while eventually will turn erotic, starts out telling a story, as any good story teller will do, sets you up with a history, a back ground something to chew on. I promise though that if you stick with me you will not be disappointed. Also the legends and people in this story are of my own creation, they are not based on any other legends or stories or people, they have no basis of fact, just what lay inside my head. )) Four Years Later.... Logan stared at the stubborn eight year old as she stamped her little foot and insisted on going with him. He growled low and shook his head. "No. Fawn you can't go with me this time. They specifically said no girls allowed." He narrowed his eyes at the slender girl. Fawn had grown but she was still small, slender, and very much like the animal she was named for. She had long red curls that came to her waist, though right now they were braided back and held together with a leather thong. She had a spattering of freckles across her tiny pixie like nose seen clearly through the dark tan that covered her skin. Unlike most redheads, Fawn managed to tan very well, if not for her red hair and green eyes one would think she was one of the People by birth. He took in the stubborn set of her tiny jaw and shook his head. "That is not gonna work this time Little One. You know I would take you with me if I could. But this time you are too young, and .. A girl. I will be sent packing if I take you with me this time." She huffed and put her hands on her jean clad hips and widened her stance and he knew she was about to argue the point again. Logan held up his finger to head her off. " No. This is important. Do you want me to miss the ritual? Do you want me to go another year without being considered an adult?" He frowned at her. It was virtually her fault he had missed his chance the year before. And he was not about to let her ruin it for him again. She seemed to consider his words this time, and her head dropped. "No, I don't want you mad at me like you were last year. You didn't talk to me for almost a month." She pouted. He hated it when she pouted. For some reason ever since she came to live in the village this tiny whisp of a girl had him wrapped around her tiny fingers. He reached out and lifted her chin to meet her gaze. "When I get back, we will go hunting together, just you and me, Alright?" She searched his gaze for a moment, trying to decide if he meant it, he had been promising for a long time to take her when she was old enough, and each time she had asked he had told her she wasn't old enough just yet. When she saw the truth in his eyes she grinned and nodded. "Alright but you had better mean it, I will have everything ready for when you come back." He watched as her eyes lit with excitement and almost groaned, it was going to be a long hunting trip and he doubted they would return with anything worth while. Deep down though he knew the trip would be worth it no matter what they returned with. He grinned and ruffled her curls like he had since she was just a tiny thing that could barely walk. "I have to go now, behave for your Momma and we will go hunting when I get back." He bent and kissed her forehead in a brotherly fashion and then started off towards the woods a few steps then paused and looked at her sternly. "Do not follow this time Fawn, or I will never take you hunting, and might never speak to you again. Understood?" She looked as if he had struck her and he cursed under his breath but he knew his warning was necessary. After a moment she nodded then turned to go whispering. "Be careful Logan." Then ran off to find her mother. He flashed a grin at her retreating back then headed off into the forest at an easy lope his moccasined feet finding his path unerringly. He had earned the nick name "Wolf Boy" when he was fifteen. They had been racing, just a friendly race that spanned two and a half miles of woodland. He had passed each of the boys in the race and remained in the lead all the way to the end. For those watching him run they had said he had never set a wrong foot, leaping over fallen trees and missing low hanging branches as if he were born to it. He knew the Elders thought that Brother Wolf would appear to him and join their spirits, but as each year passed and he did not start shifting, melding into the shape of a wolf when he ran, they began to second guess their theories. Logan did not care. He knew where he stood with Brother Wolf. They were one, he had been one with Brother Wolf since he was two years old. He had crawled off into the woods and gotten lost, his family had spent the day looking for him, while he had come nose to nose with Brother Wolf. The large wolf had let him follow him through the woods that day, the two year old Indian boy hanging onto his dark tail. When it began to grow dark and the boy to grow hungry, the wolf had taken him to the edge of the woods, licked his face and nudged him out of the under growth and right into the feet of his Mother, who had made one last foray into the forest to find him. No one knew that he had met the Wolf, Brother Wolf himself. No one but him. He had told no one of the story, not even Fawn. Though he thought, perhaps if she could promise not to tell anyone else, that he might tell her on their hunting trip. The thought made him smile. Many in the Village thought it strange that he would pick up with a child so young and befriend her, stranger yet being the fact that she was a girl, and white. They thought he would hate her when they brought her to the village to live. His father had been killed by a white man. The man had been drunk, and his father had been coming home from a long trip. The drunk had swerved and hit his father's car sent it reeling off the road and over a cliff. Instead of being angry with the tiny red headed child, he had become her protector, her best friend, her teacher, her brother in many ways. Her mother trusted him to keep her safe and would let him take her with him where ever he went. Some thought he spoiled the girl, added to her stubborn Nature. But he didn't care. He loved her like a sister and would do anything to make her happy. As he drew near the meeting place he slowed and pushed all other thoughts from his mind. He stopped a good half mile away and stripped out of his clothes folding his shirt and jeans and placing them in the pack he had brought with him. He tucked them away and climbed one of the trees shoving the bag into a hollow there. He paused and took out his talisman. A shiny piece of hematite, so dark it was almost black. It had a silver trim at the top and the stone was carved into the shape of a wolf claw. It hung from a leather cord. He tied it around his neck so that the claw rested at the hallow of his throat. It had been a gift to him from Fawn. Given to him for his fifteenth birthday, Her mother had taken her shopping and she had thrown a fit when her Mother had refused. He grinned a little as he pictured the scene. Fawn had stood in front of the jewelry case in the Indian shop her little arms folded her pert little nose up in the air as she glared at her Mother and stopped her little foot. "It belongs to Logan. It is His, it's not my fault that the store wants money for it." her Mother had almost laughed as the tale goes, and the Jewelry owner had intervened and given it to them for half price. Maria had relented and handed it to Fawn. She had given it to him after everyone had left the party. She had been hurt when he didn't wear it but he explained to her very gently. That it was not time for him to wear it, and when it was he would put it on and never take it off. He knew that now was that time. He secured the knot at the back of his neck then changed his mind and lengthened the leather string dropping the claw down his chest to rest against the center of his chest then again tightened the knot. He nodded in satisfaction then loped the rest of the way into the clearing wearing nothing but a pair of running shorts. Along the edges of the circle other boys had begun to gather. All the boys ranged between the ages of seventeen and twenty. All ready for their quest to adult hood. Each would be given a task to complete each would have two days to complete that task. If they did not complete the task in the time required then they would have to wait for the next year to try again with a new task. Many did not pass the first year. Most did the second year. This would be Logan's third year to try. The Elders had been angry at first when he had tried at sixteen to do the ceremony, but they had allowed it, asking of him to Find Brother Wolf hidden inside. He had been angry with them then, knowing Brother Wolf was not ready to make himself known, knowing they had known that as well. And so he had failed the first year. The second year had been because Fawn had followed him, had been caught at the edges of the ceremonial clearing and he had been sent off with her to return her safely to her mother and told not to return until the next year, this time without the nosey red headed child. This year he knew again they would ask him to bring Brother Wolf out to be known to all. This year he knew Brother Wolf was done waiting. He could feel him stirring deep inside could feel him prowling with the need to be released. And he knew also that he would not be the only one finding Brother Wolf this year. He was the only one to know. Even the Elders had not guessed. He stood silently in the firelight as the Elders set their tasks upon each of the boys. There were 10 of them this year, four of them, including Logan, would be returning with Brother Wolf. Logan eyed the three other boys that had been chosen by the council, and knew that those three would fail their task. Only he knew which ones would run beside him as a Pack when this ceremony was over. Drake Running Bird, Fawn's brother, a year older then himself, would be one, Silas Red Elk, His best friend, would be one also, and the third would be his other friend, Seth Black Bear. They were friends for a reason, and Logan knew it. He told no one, he knew that it would come about when the time was right. He also knew that his friends would succeed at their tasks, and find Brother Wolf at the same time. He shook his head a moment and listened as the Elder's spoke to him. Again assigning him with the task of finding Brother Wolf's spirit inside him. He wondered what they had planned if he failed his task. They could not keep him in child status forever when he was clearly a Man. He huffed a little bit under his breath, frowning at one of the Elders as he curled his fingers around the wolf's claw against his chest. The old man nodded his head muttering to himself before wandering to the next boy. Each of them shared a sip from the ceremonial bowl, filled with a special tea made from roots and berries of the forest. Logan took only a small sip of it knowing he would need a clear head for the night to come. Other's copied his example while the rest took long drinks from the bowl. They sang ancient songs long into the night celebrating that what makes a boy a Man. They ate their fill and drank water, knowing that it would be their last meal for a couple of days. Then around two in the morning the Elders gathered them together and gave them a each a few words of wisdom before sending them off onto their tasks. Some headed back for the village, and their cars while others headed towards town on foot, the rest, headed for the deep forest, Logan amongst that last group. He waited and watched as each boy dispersed into the night, then he too melted into the shadows. On silent feet he made his way to the caves hidden deep in the cliffs at the edge of the forest. He had been prepared for his task, he had already set up fire wood and drinking water. Had even tucked a couple of blankets away in case he needed them. He moved silently through the woods till they opened up to the cliffs. He looked carefully about and then slipped into one of the caves. He took a blanket out and set it on the sandy ground then started his fire for warmth then took the other blanket and rolled it up for a pillow. He was tired and he knew that Brother Wolf would not come to him right away. He double checked to make sure he would not be disturbed and then he curled up beside the fire and fell into a deep slumber. A slumber full of strange dreams..... Wolf Legends Ch. 03 Chapter 3 - The Change ((Disclaimer: Fair warning, This story, while eventually will turn erotic, starts out telling a story, as any good story teller will do, sets you up with a history, a back ground something to chew on. Running through the forest first on two legs then his nose lifting to the air and the scent of something so scintillating that he couldn't help but follow it. Soon he realized he was on four legs rather then two and racing after a small deer. One caught half way between baby and adult. He pounced on the small prey caught the back of it's neck, and started to pull backwards, but then that deer changed, no longer was it a deer but instead a snow white wolf, much smaller then himself and female. He let go, startled by the change. His gaze fell on the snowy little wolf and then she changed again this time it was just a face under his mammoth paws a familiar freckled face older, more mature but still young and vibrant and full of stubbornness and mischief, a face surrounded by coppery curls that had darkened and matured from the girlish curls he knew so well now. He jerked awake with a sharply indrawn breath. He blinked his dark eyes rubbing the sleep from them. He was once more sitting beside his fire inside the cave, out of the elements for it had begun to rain. He wondered briefly if his friends had been lucky enough to find shelter for the night, for they too had been sent into the forest to complete their tasks. He sat up and added a few more pieces of wood to the fire then stared absently into it wondering the meaning of his dream. Wondering who the white wolf had been and suspecting it was Fawn. But why her? Why a Female? A white Female no less. Perhaps that was precisely why. He shook his head a little bit and huffed. Even when on his path to adult hood that tiny little redhead was on his mind, interrupting his dreams. Slowly his eyes drifted closed and once more he began slip into a deep slumber. This time when he dreamed he was already a wolf. He stood tall, huge compared to the normal local wolves. His fur was a dark ebony, inky black and around his neck still in place was the wolf's claw necklace given to him by Fawn. He lifted his huge shaggy head and howled, a deep lonesome sound. His dark ears perked forward and he listened intently. Moments passed, hours it seemed, and then his head arched back and he howled again, this time he was answered by a higher pitched howl, but it was a voice he knew well. He gave a wolfish grin and trotted off in that direction his huge paws leaving deep indents in the dirt, indents that his long bushy dark tail swiped away. Soon he met up with a silvery male wolf. Drake. He nudged his shoulder good naturedly. His head lifted and Drake's dipped acknowledging him. As soon as that acceptance was made Logan felt his mind expand and envelope that of Drake's. "About time you showed up Drake, I was beginning to wonder if my dreams had been wrong." His voice echoed in his own mind and he knew that Drake had heard him. His laugh could be heard and he shook his shaggy grey head. "I was beginning to wonder if Brother Wolf would visit me. Already I had accomplished my task. And I was just waiting. I don't think He has reached Silas or Seth yet." Logan shook his head and grinned. "Lets go find out." Then tore off at a run with Drake hot on his heels. It was then that he realized he was no longer sleeping, nor was he human. He let the spirit of the Wolf fully over take him then, rippling muscles bunching and rippling as their feet tore into the ground, free in ways they could not imagine in their human forms. He skidded to a stop sniffing the air. He hunkered down in the bushes calling Drake to a stop. "Silas is not ready. He is still working on his task. Come lets go check on Seth." Drake nodded his head and moved slowly away heading off in the direction they had seen Seth take. Soon they burst into a tiny clearing barely big enough to hold them both and Seth who had indeed changed already, he was a tall brown and grey male, slender where Drake was husky, neither of them taller then Logan, who was taller in his human form as well. Logan grinned at Seth and nudged his shoulder in greeting. Seth growled playfully and jumped against him tugging on his ear. Their barks and growls rang out the three of them messing around, but it was not until Seth dipped his head submitting to Logan as his Alpha that their minds expanded once more pulling Seth into the pack as well. They could now feel what each were feeling, could hear each other's voices in their minds, talk to each other through a form of telepathy. By Midday Silas had joined them, his coat a dusky black, not quite as dark as Logan's and his frame was smaller then all the others and yet still unusually large for the wolves in the area. For the next day and a half the four wolves spent the time working out their pecking order, Drake became Logan's Second or Beta, and Silas and Seth shared the Gamma position. They also spent the time practicing shifting from one form to the other. Late on that second night they all once more met at the ceremonial clearing. Each presented the completion, or the lack of completion of their tasks to the elders. Four of them, failed in their tasks and would have to return the next year. Two of them were given new talismans one of strength one of wisdom and were each accepted as Men of the Tribe. The Pack stood at the edge of the firelight, Logan and Drake at their center then Silas to the left, and Seth to the Right. The Elders approached them almost warily. They knew that something had changed in all four of the boys, each were taller, each were more muscular, each looked more assured of themselves, more relaxed, more at ease in their own skins. They spoke first to Logan. "Have you completed your task?" the words spoken almost in unison by each of them. "Yes Elder, I have completed my Task." A grin curved his lips and he stood a little taller. Against his bared chest the dark wolf's claw gleamed in the firelight, the stone warm against his skin. "Prove it." They again spoke in Unison as was custom. "I have nothing to prove, Elder, my word should be enough." Logan spoke in a low smooth voice that held a ring of authority to it. For a moment they hesitated debating his words then nodded. "Agreed, we have seen proof enough" Their gaze then turned to Drake and again they asked. "Have you Completed your Task." One by one their tasks were presented, one by one they were accepted and each boy stepped into the shoes of a Man rather then a boy. Once more the bowl of tea was passed around and the ceremony was competed. With whoops and hollers the boys ran off into the night each one in the direction they had entered the circle from off to find their clothes. The newly accepted Men were met by the village and greeted with a feast. The moment Logan came into view Fawn launched herself at him and he caught her deftly in his arms and swung her around with a grin. He kissed her forehead gently. "Thank you for behaving." He told her quietly. Then hefted her onto his shoulders as he had done when she was little and walked into the crowd welcomed home by their People. He was treated especially well, and when they heaped food on his plate again and again, he would pass it around to his Pack, making sure they ate first. Then he himself dug in with Fawn sitting at his knee as she had since she was just a tiny thing. There was a new protectiveness about him now over the child at his knee. A pull that seemed to have strengthened the moment she had landed in his arms when she had greeted his return. He wondered at it at first but then in his heart he knew. He thought that perhaps he had always known. He grinned a little bit then laughed at a joke that was being passed around the fire. They celebrated late into the night. Most passed out there at the fire's edge in the center of the village. He woke with the morning streaks of dawn to find Fawn's tiny body snuggled into the warmth of his chest. He lay there for a while letting her sleep, watching her. He brushed a curl away from her sweet freckled little face and felt her stir a little then settle. He had been bound to her from the moment he met her. And now he knew why. With a smile he bent and kissed the top of her head then wrapped his arms around her, lifting her sleeping frame from the ground and slid easily to his feet. He slipped off into the night towards her house. Inside he made sure her Mother was sleeping soundly then tucked her into her bed. He bent his head to whisper into her ear. "Tomorrow my Little One we will go Hunting, and I will show you what only the Pack has seen." She murmured softly in her sleep and turned towards him as he started to step away. She curled her fingers into his dark hair holding him there effectively. For a while he lay there beside her quietly watching her sleep. His mind wandered back to his dreams a few nights before and he wondered, and not for the first time, if she was the white wolf in his dream. It was almost unheard of in the Legends that any of the females were chosen by Brother Wolf to run with Him not since the quarrels and he took his spirit from all females. The calm in his soul though told him that it would eventually be so. That eventually Brother Wolf would join with Fawn, just as Logan himself would join with her, though in a totally different way. Finally she released her hold on his hair and he gently slipped away pausing next to Maria's door and whispering a quiet. "Good Morning Momma Maria." He gave her a crooked grin and watched as her brow raise. "Momma Maria is it now?" She whispered back then shook her finger at him. " You better watch it young Man. I will take a switch to you just like I do to her." He laughed low and grinned. "Are you hungry? Would you like some breakfast before you head home to your Momma?" He thought about that a moment then shook his head. "Nahh we had plenty to eat last night and Momma would be cross with me if I didn't eat with her this morning." He stepped into the room and kissed her forehead and whispered. "Thank you for Understanding." She smiled and patted his cheek gently. "I have known it was to be since she was tiny and told me that Brother Wolf would walk with you one day. She knew before anyone else realized. Go on now before she wakes up and holds you to that hunting trip she has been planning for and drags you off before your Momma gets a proper hello." He grinned again and left silently a new grace and lightness to his step despite his hulking size. He paused on the path well worn between Momma Maria's house and his own, and looked back peering through the growing light into the window he knew belonged to Fawn. He gave a devilish grin when he saw her face in the window waving at him, her head surrounded in a blazing riot of red curls. He waved back then loped down the path to greet his Mother and prepare himself for the Hunt ahead. (( Ok here I am stuck. Would you like to see the hunt? Or would you rather I skip ahead a few years and get on with the story? Please let me know what you would prefere, Thank you))
