PLEASE let me know what you think if I should go on, or if you know of an editor I could use. Thanks! _____ She looked inconspicuous as she walked through the crowded streets with her hoodie pulled up over her long chocolate brown hair and her hands stuffed in her pockets. There was a festival occurring covering the streets with loud people, brilliant colors, and various street vendors selling their wares. Each vendor would push their merchandise in your face pretending to give you a good price on worthless goods. But she wasn't there for the vendors she was discreetly watching the customers looking out for an easy mark. She was an excellent pickpocket. She could reach her hand in the inner jacket pocket of the most attentive cop and be half a mile away with their badge, wallet, and gun before they knew anything was missing. She didn't steal for a living but sometimes she needed the cash. Finding a job in this city proved to be more difficult than usual. Usually, a small hole in the wall diner or club could always use her waitressing skills. She didn't know where she was going to sleep tonight which was typical and also why she happened to be scouting potential mark. Sleeping in the park was getting dangerous. As the weather emerged so did the creeps and while she could take care of herself she didn't want to keep dozing with one eye open in this new city. She was pretty much a gypsy moving from place to place on her own. She had no family and no roots holding her down so she moved constantly. She was convinced that one day she would find a place where she would instantly feel at home. It was a silly dream but it was the last one she held on to. She knew dreams didn't come true but when she closed her eyes at night finding that perfect place to call home seemed almost attainable. And something about this city seemed almost right. So as she looked for her marks she made sure to choose ones that would provide enough cash to find a room to stay in while she continued her search for legitimate work. She examined the crowd through her dark lashes and finally found a good mark. She knew he would have a good amount of cash on him not only because of the fine, luxurious suit he wore with his serious expression but the men who were following him. They were watching and guarding him at a short distance. While most people wouldn't notice them she had developed a keen sense for watching and evaluating people. She briefly wondered why the man warranted a 3 man body guard team but she wiped it from her mind as she prepared to swipe his undoubtedly thick wallet. She pulled down her hood and unzipped her sweatshirt to perfect her façade. Blending in was the key to her pick pocketing. She needed to be causal but still with a bit of apprehension that all individuals had in a large crowd. The more blended she could be the less likely his guards would perceive her as a threat and the closer she could get to the mark. She began clutching her bag and looking around cautiously. Assuming her role she eased up to the well dressed man and brushed up against him while looking in her bag. As she reached into his bulging pocket to retrieve his wallet she felt his skin brush her hand and she paused. A tingle caressed her hand and shocked her. With her hand in his pocket she lifted her eyes to meet his. Her brown eyes met brilliant green orbs set in the most beautiful face she had ever seen. His soft tanned skin seemed to melt over the strong masculine lines of his jaw and cheekbones. His full lips parted in a small smile. His glossy black hair fell to his shoulders while framing his face beautifully. In that brief moment his eyes seemed to bore into her soul and she had a dazzling vision of the sun shining through the leaves of the forest and kissing the forest floor. In her peripheral vision she noticed his hand coming up to caress her face and it brought her back to reality. She snatched the wallet out of his pocket, glanced around to locate and evade the green-eyed man's bodyguards and dashed off. She had her prize but the striking smile on the man's face was etched into her mind. ---------- Xavier Cambridge was stunned. This was a rare occurrence for the Alpha. He felt the tiny human bump into him. Her head barely reached his shoulder but in their brief moment of contact her scent floated up to his nose and interrogated his senses. She smelled like warm honey and roses. She smelled of sunshine and happiness. It warmed the empty, lonely depths of his soul and called to the animal within him that had lay dormant and uninterested for so long. He hadn't felt his wolf stir so strongly in such a long time. And when he felt the caress of her skin and saw the sparkle in her shocked hazel eyes he had to know everything about her. He was not prepared for her hasty retreat and was too distracted by the silky bounce of her thick brown hair to stop her. Xavier's Betas noticed the faint smile and the girl's retreat and rushed to his side. They hadn't seen a true smile on his face in years. Xavier didn't know what to say or where he was headed anymore. Content to just stop and stare while he figured out a way to find her again his Betas urged him to keep moving. As Alpha he had many duties. Currently he was on route to a meeting with the Alphas of the three closest neighboring packs. Alphas Terrence, Carson, and Michaels were waiting to meet with him regarding territory lines. While the city proper was neutral territory the outlying country was clearly divided. With the increasing numbers in the Cambridge Pack, Xavier was trying to prevent any complications from arising. Tension had already been high with the Terrence Pack due to deep rooted rivalry that went back centuries. When Xavier left his compound to journey into the city that morning he wanted to confront the concerns of the other packs and return home as soon as possible. He hated the congested streets of festival days. Now all he could think of was searching every face in that insufferable crowd for the bright hazel eyes and soft pink lips. The girl with the caramel skin and honeyed scent swam through his mind. Every girl he saw would suddenly take on her features until he turned to look directly at them. His wolf growled in frustration as they made their way through the streets. Derek, Xavier's second in command and close friend began to chuckle. "What amuses you Derek?" Xavier asked "You do Alpha. We all saw that exchange between you and that girl. Now you flinch every time you see a speck of brown hair" Derek, Tomas, and Zach's chuckles became roaring laughter causing strangers to look in their direction and step away from the four giant men. "We'll be late if you don't stop that Alpha" Zach added always the most practical. "Girls have been throwing themselves at you for ages and I've never seen you make that face." Derek countered, trying and failing to stop his laughter. "What face?" Xavier asked "That mushy lovey dovey face" Tomas exclaimed grabbing his stomach and wiping tears from his eyes. "Enough" Xavier growled not amused anymore. "Let's be on our way." Xavier's wolf howled within him. He wanted the honey and rose scented girl. He wanted to find her, mate her, and hold her close for all of time. His wolf projected these images to him causing his skin to heat up and blood to boil within him. Find her! His wolf cried. Bring her home to us! Xavier's wolf warred with him. Not yet. He told his wolf. We must make sure our territory is safe and meet with the Alphas. Then we will find her and never let go! He begged his wolf to understand he had to go to this meeting. Xavier craved this new found girl with a fierce longing he'd never know before. A few mere seconds of contact and his life was changed. His wolf grew weary as the trudged on a waited for the moment when they would shift and track down their hazel eyed girl. "Were late Alpha" Zach repeated. "I'll track down the girl later. . ." "You will not touch her!" Xavier growled fiercely turning to bear down on his Betas who backed up slowly. "She's mine. All mine. My mate" The words came out before he even realized what he was saying. "My mate?" he asked himself quietly as he spun around and continued on his way. His wolf hummed contentedly at his proclamation. Xavier found even though he didn't know the girl's name yet thinking of her as his mate was exceedingly pleasing. His Betas laughter quieted down as they realized the magnitude of the situation. Their Alpha had just found and lost his mate. They were happy for him and immediately started scanning the crowd for the girl that had claimed their Alpha's heart. Their new Alpha Queen had to be found and secure. As the group drew nearer to the meeting place Xavier noticed an amber jewel glinting in the sunlight. The jewel was hanging on a black woven necklace. The effect of the jewel surrounded in black reminded Xavier of his mate's eyes as she peered up at him through her thick dark lashes. He had to buy it for her. The first gift of many he would present to his lovely mate. It was then, as he reached into his pocket, that Xavier became aware of the absence of his wallet. In that moment it all clicked. "She stole it!" he exclaimed. He should be furious, angry that someone got close enough to take advantage of him. He was an Alpha it shouldn't have happened. "What?" Derek asked confused. "She stole my wallet" and laughed a loud and deep belly laugh. He should be livid, enraged. But he wasn't. He was impressed and eager to learn more about his mate, the beautiful thief. His Betas thought he was cracking, losing his mind as he laughed uncontrollable for the first time in a long time. They exchanged entertained glances and shook their heads. "I'll get through this ridiculous meeting, then I will find my little pick pocketing mate and she will be mine forever" Xavier thought as he grinned and walked past the booth selling the amber jewel and into his meeting. --------- The small group didn't notice the hazel eyed girl perched on a low rooftop watching their leader. She was too far away to hear what they were saying but she couldn't tear her eyes away from the exquisitely alluring man. He entered the building and she turned away prepared to never see him again. But somehow that saddened her. Stealing My Heart Ch. 02 A/N: Thank you so much for all of your comments. You have no idea how much they meant to me. I'm sorry this next chapter took so long. I didn't like me first draft and then my computer died. I hope you enjoy this and leave me more comment, good or bad. Happy Holidays! _____ The four Alphas sat around the mahogany conference table, their betas standing arms crossed behind their respective Alphas. Xavier was quickly losing patience with Alpha Dean Terrence. They had been in this meeting for hours because of his bogus accusations. All Xavier could think about was finding his mate. He never thought he would have a mate and now, when she was so close, Terrence was keeping them needlessly occupied. Xavier's wolf had enough. Springing out of his chair, claws extending, Xavier exploded. "I will not have you making false accusations about my pack Terrence." "I will not have your packs encroaching on my territory. You get your members to stay on your land or I will deal with them," "Don't you dare threaten my pack. They know our territory lines and obey my law." The glow of his emerald eyes indicated Xavier's imminent change. "Calm down son," Alpha Isaiah Carson placed a soothing hand on Xavier's arm. Carson was known for his jovial and relaxed approach to leadership. As the oldest and most experienced Alpha in the room he had dealt with many inter-pack disputes. He knew he just needed to keep everyone calm. When Xavier became Alpha, Carson had become a wise mentor. Overtime they had developed a close friendship. So when Carson spoke Xavier gave Terrence one last menacing glance and sat down. "Now, Alpha Terrence, are you sure these trespassers aren't new rogue wolves? Do you have any evidence, proof, or specific names we could look into which point to one of our packs?" Carson asked coolly. Red faced, Terrance hesitated. "Well no. But that doesn't mean it's not happening. I know –" "In that case" Alpha Stephen Michaels interrupted "I will be leaving. I have many other matters to take care of today. Call me when you have proof Terrence." Alpha Michaels had been silent most of the meeting. He often took a neutral stance on inter-pack issues and only attended to determine if there was any threat to his pack. Standing and motioning to his betas, he walked to the door. Before exiting Alpha Michaels turned and nodded to the other Alphas. "By the goddess of our sacred moon I bid you all good day." Alpha Michaels and his beta strolled out, the door closing softly behind them. "I will not be ignored," Terrence raged. "Be warned I will have no mercy on any of your pack members who wonder onto my territory." He stormed out the door his betas on his heels. "So, my boy," Carson turned smiling at Xavier, "when do I meet the girl?" Xavier's betas began to chuckle while Carson's looked at the group confused. "Girl, my friend? I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about," Xavier denied staring daggers at his betas. "Son, you have been absentmindedly glancing out that window this entire meeting. You are never absentminded even in your youth you were dreadfully focused. Not to mention you've never lost control of your wolf before. Now there is only one thing that could disrupt a man of your bizarre attention and control; a beautiful woman! Am I right Derek?" "Actually yes!" Derek said laughing "He just ran into her in the street where she managed to steal his wallet. His face was priceless. I. . ." Derek swallowed the rest of his words and fought a smile at the irritated look he received from his Alpha and best friend. "Yes, well. I must find her now. If you don't mind my friend, her trail is getting cold with every second we waste." Exasperated Xavier stood up from the table. "Of course son. Go on then. Find your dear mate with my blessing and don't forget to invite me to the celebration." "I'd never forget you dear friend." With that Xavier waved to his friend, and exited the building his nose in the air searching for the scent of warmed honey and roses. ----- Quickly Xavier headed to the last place he had seen his elusive mate. His betas followed close behind him through the thinning crowd. Night was approaching causing the vendors to close their stalls and people to head home clearing the streets. Finding the place he was looking for Xavier closed his eyes and brought his wolf to the foreground of his mind. Thanks to the gifts that came with being a werewolf his scenes were enhanced. He was able to pick out distinct scents even in the streets of the city. Taking a deep breath Xavier searched the air for the lingering scent of honey and roses among the odor of a well populated, prosperous city. A growl rumbled through his chest as his wolf picked up the faint scent. Derek grabbed his shoulder right before Xavier could take off. "X, hold on. Tell us what you are thinking." Xavier had completely forgotten about his betas the moment he stepped out of the conference. "Derek I'm going to find my mate. I can smell her I just –" "Do you have plan? What can we do?" For once Xavier didn't have a plan. His wolf was getting more agitated with every second that passed. Xavier had to contain his wolf while he thought. "You guys head back to the compound. I'll return once I've found her." "Alpha, we can't just leave you out here alone. We'll stay, help you out." Zach said. "Yeah, man" Derek said with a straight face. "What if she tries to steal your shoes this time. We need to protect you." Zach and Tomas hid their wide smiles behind their hands. The death glare they received from their Alpha couldn't stop the laughter from bubbling over. "I will call when I get a chance," Xavier clenched his jaw and ignored his betas. "Are you sure you don't need to us? We can stay," Derek said seeing the distress and tension in his Alpha and tried to reassure him. "No, I need to do this alone. Now get back to the compound. I will talk to you later." He waited just a moment to make sure his orders were followed then Xavier caught the scent and followed it up the street. "Okay guys, let's go," Derek said sparing his Alpha one last glance. The three men turned as one and headed back to the car. ------ It was well after nightfall when Xavier found himself outside a sordid motel. He had followed his mate's fading scent down dark alleys, up and down barely lit streets, and astonishingly across roofs. He had traveled all over the city until he came to the end of his search. The motel was dingy beige with sickly green trim. Only one of the street lights still flickered outside and the parking lot was littered with trash. Suspicious looking people lingered outside and all Xavier could think about was finding his mate and getting her out of the repulsive place. She was not safe here. His wolf howled in sorrow at the conditions he found his mate living in. He couldn't imagine what she had been through that would land her in this position but he was determined to liberate her. He vowed to himself he would give her the world and more. Walking towards the building Xavier's dark, massive figure scared off most of the unsavory characters congregating outside the motel. He could still catch a trace of his mate's scent in the air but he wasn't sure exactly where it led. Entering the motel he approached the counter. "What do you want?" The dirty man behind the glass sneered at Xavier. His stringy blond hair was thinning and plastered to his rat like face. Xavier could smell his awful stench through the glass that separated them. He wore large-framed glasses that he pushed up his sharp nose, a filthy yellow bowling shirt, and a name tag that identified him as Walter. "I'm looking for a girl –" "You have to find your own girls. But I'm sure there are still some out on the corner," Walter smirked. Xavier wrinkled his nose, unable to keep the intense disgust of his face. "No, I'm looking for a specific girl" he growled. "She's petite, hazel eyes" his eyes began to glaze over as he thought about her. "She has long chocolate brown hair, smooth skin, and she's just perfect." "Wow, yeah I know her. She checked in earlier tonight. But I can't just be given out her room number . . . without a processing fee of course," Walter said suggestively. Xavier was torn. On one hand he needed her room number and on the other he was furious that the slimy bastard would be willing to give up his mate's safety and privacy for a little cash. The mere thought of someone comprising her safety caused Xavier's control to slip. Slamming his fist into the glass he glared at the startled man "You will tell me where she is and if I ever hear of you giving out customer information again I will kill you!" The smirk vanished from Walter face as a sense of doom took hold of him. The glass separating the customer and the clerk was installed because of the unsavory characters that often threatened the employees so Walter was used to threats. But the vicious snarl and glowing eyes of the man before him coupled with the spider fractures branching out from where his enormous fist had struck the glass terrified him. Walter was shaking as he hurried to give him the information he requested. "Sh. . . sh . . . she requested room 201" he stammered anxiously. "Where is that?" "Next to the stairs and overlooking the back parking lot." Walter huddled behind the counter as far away from the glass as he could his long nose quivering in fear. After giving the trembling lowlife another menacing stare, Xavier turned, fists clenched, and stalked out of the building. He was so close. In a few moments he would finally come to the end of his quest. His mate would be in his arms. Xavier was so intent on reaching her room he was slightly startled by his phone ringing loudly in his pocket. Exasperated, he pulled out his phone. Seeing Derek's name on the screen he picked up the phone. "Derek, I am about to get to her room. Is this important?" "X, do you know what time it is? You can't go to her room at two in the morning." Xavier halted in his climb up the stairs. He didn't realize it was so late and now he was faced with the fact that he also didn't have a plan. Xavier had never been so nervous in his life. Even his first year as Alpha had not been as nerve racking as the prospect of meeting his elusive mate. His thoughts were frantically running through his head. How would he introduce himself, what did he say to her, would she feel the mating pull as strongly as he did, would she accept him for what he was. He was so distracted that it took awhile for him hear his second calling his name. "Xavier . . . Xavier, tell me where you are. You need to get back to the compound." The stress in his friend's voice caught the attention of the Alpha within Xavier. "What's wrong Derek? Is the pack ok?" "Alpha Terrence might have been on to something. The wolves on patrol tonight detected the presence of unfamiliar wolves on our territory." Suddenly, Xavier realized that he had completely disregarded his pack in the search for his mate. He had responsibilities and work he had neglected by spending the night finding his mate. He had never been so conflicted. He yearned to reach his mate and finally complete his soul yet his pack depended on him as well. With great pain and effort Xavier descended the stairs outside his mate's room. His wolf howled in protest but he argued that there was nothing he could do at the moment. He couldn't bring his mate back to an unsafe compound. His wolf reluctantly conceded. Giving Derek directions to his location and orders for Zach, head of the trackers, to gather their best hunters and search the forest, he hung up the phone and returned to the reception area of the motel. Walter looked up as the door opened and began to cower at the sight of the man before him. Somehow he seemed even more dangerous than before. Grabbing a piece of paper and a pen off the counter he wrote down his phone number. "Now you listen to me," Xavier whispered threateningly. "You will call me immediately if the girl checks out before I return. You will call me immediately if you sense she is in any danger. You will do this or I will return and tear you apart." Walter vigorously nodded his head clutching the phone number deeply affected by the powerful feelings of danger rolling of the man. Disobeying this man's request never crossed Walter's mind. He didn't doubt the threats of the hulking figure. Xavier's wolf reveled in the lowlife's submission. With one foot out the door Xavier stopped and turned. Noticing his hesitation Walter's quivering increased. "By the way, the girl in room 201, what is her name?" Walter rushed to retrieve the information, "She signed in as Jordan," "Any last name?" "N . . . No sir. Just Jordan," Xavier gave a small smile. "Jordan," he whispered the name to himself. He liked the way it sounded. It fit the small girl so well. He walked out into the inky darkness and waited for Derek to pick him up in the pack SUV. Walter heaved a sigh of relief at his departure. _____ The black SUV had pulled up outside the motel and Xavier signaled for Derek to let him take the wheel. Xavier gripped the steering so hard his knuckles turned white. "Tell me what's going on at the compound," he growled. "Like I told you on the phone, X. The team on patrol sensed unknown wolves. Zach is currently taking the trackers out into the forest. He should be able to report by the time we return. There is nothing we can do until we return." Xavier nodded his head his thoughts flitting from the threat to his pack and the mate he was leaving behind. He had never felt so powerless before. Wisely, Derek fell silent he could feel the tension coming off his Alpha in waves. He had not wanted to call is Alpha about the situation at the compound while he was searching for his mate but he knew Xavier would have been furious if he had not been notified. Driving through the dark forest calmed Xavier and his wolf. He needed to be composed when dealing with the potential threat. Nearing the compound Xavier got a twinge of pain in his chest. He knew one of his pack members was injured. Slamming on the breaks, Xavier jumped out of the car with a roar. Confused Derek hurried to follow his Alpha. Xavier shifted into his wolf. The massive midnight black wolf raced through the trees with a sandy blond wolf on his heels. Xavier snarled as he caught a whiff of an intruder in his territory and the blood of Tyler, one of his trackers. Picking up his speed and howling his rage he neared the site of the fight. Two brown wolves were fighting fiercely. Tyler was a lithe wolf with healthy, glossy, fur but a large gash across his shoulder was bleeding profusely. The other wolf looked slightly rabid; it's fur dirty and unkempt. They rolled through the mud and fallen leaves. Both wolves' teeth snapped dangerously when they separated. Tyler, sensing the presence of his Alpha took his eyes off the rabid wolf for just a second. Seeing the opening the rabid wolf pounced, his claws digging into Tyler's ribs. Tyler howled in agony. Xavier bowled into the unfamiliar wolf, sinking his teeth into his neck and shaking his head viciously. The other wolf whimpered in pain then fell still, dead under the cruel jaws of the angry Alpha. Turning to Derek he bellowed into his second's mind, "Take Tyler to the medical building and get the rest of the betas to search the forest!" Derek and Tyler shifted and supporting Tyler they hobbled as quickly as possible back to the compound to raise the betas. Xavier raced off into the forest calling out to Zach and his other trackers. "Zach, Tyler has been attacked. Have you found any other unknown wolves?" "Alpha, we have scented at least three unknown male wolves near the compound but haven't caught any yet. Is Tyler okay?" "He will be fine. Derek is with him. Stay in pairs I don't want anyone else on their own," Xavier broadcasted to his betas and trackers. "Search the territory in a tight grid. I don't want any of them sliping by. If there are any more unknowns you subdue them and bring them back to the compound immediately." The wolves searched the forest and the clearing of the compound. The sun had barely begun to rise when every inch of the territory was finally covered. The wolves made their way back to the main house shifting back to their human form as they arrived in the clearing. "Zach, Derek, Eva meet me in the kitchen in ten minutes," Xavier called. ----- Xavier pulled on a pair of sweats from the supply closet in the medical building as he went to check on Tyler. Tyler's wounds had been cleaned and patched by Jackson, the pack doctor, who assured him that Tyler just needed rest and time to heal. Tyler was sitting on the hospital bed grinning broadly while his mate stroked his chest lovingly. Xavier felt a twinge of jealousy when he saw the couple reminding him of the mate he left behind in the crappy motel. "I see your feeling better," "Alpha," Tyler looked up half dazed "Yeah, Stephanie made it all better," he smiled at her with adoration. "And you saved my life. Thank you Alpha." "I'm just glad you're okay," resting his hand on Tyler's shoulder comfortingly he nodded to the two wolves that bowed their heads in deference and made his way to the main house. The morning sun filtered through the large windows of the kitchen shining on a woman placing muffins in the oven. At a glance the woman looked middle aged but those that knew her knew she was one of the oldest members of the pack. Her hair that was escaping the carefully constructed bun was turning gray at her temples and frequent laughing and smiling had created the soft wrinkles on her warm face. She wore a batter stained apron over her clothes and moved about the kitchen with ease. "Good morning Mina," Xavier said grabbing a loaf of bread. "Good morning. I am making breakfast now Xavier so put the bread down," Mina said smiling and waving a wooden spoon at her Alpha. "I'm just going to make some toast –" "Not in my kitchen!" Mina exclaimed grabbing the bread out of his hands. "It's just toast Mina" "No, Xavier. I love you like my own but l have told you time and again I don't want to see you in the kitchen, especially when I am cooking. So turn yourself around wait till breakfast." "Mina, I just. . ." "Fire! You set my kitchen on fire! The only fire we have ever had on these pack lands and it happened in my kitchen because you couldn't keep your paws out of trouble," Mina was waving the spoon around frantically. Though she was quite serious she had a small on her lips. Mina had been working in the main house long before Xavier was born. She had watched Xavier grow and helped rear him. It was generally accepted that while the main house was the Alpha's home Mina made the household run smoothly. "Mina I was 6. It has been over 2 centuries when will you forgive me?" Xavier exclaimed trying to sneak around her while the omegas working in ear shot giggled. This was a common exchange between the two and a rare time when the normally gruff Alpha seemed fairly warm. Mina refused to let the Alpha anywhere near her kitchen. "I haven't decided yet. Now out until breakfast is ready," Mina herded the Alpha out the door and into his betas. "Kicked out of the kitchen again, X? I thought you would have learned by now," Eva smirked. She was tall and blonde with warm brown eyes and was known for her remarkable fighting skills and sincere kindness. She could kick your ass and make you feel good about it. Eva had earned her role as beta earlier than most with her rigid work ethic. She and Xavier had been friends for a long time and when he became Alpha she became one of his most trusted betas and the Alpha Female. Xavier rolled his eyes at his friend and led them to his office. Stealing My Heart Ch. 02 Settling in his chair with his betas facing him he asked, "What did you find?," "The only wolf caught was the one you took down Alpha. However, after talking to each of the teams we identified at least three other unknown wolf scents. They came pretty close to the compound. If we hadn't run patrol they may have gotten closer." "Patrol teams and shifts were increased until we can determine their intent. We also made sure that all escape plans are clear and easily accessible for all non-warrior pack members," Eva added. "OK. I want two extra guards on the entrance and a call to each of our pack members in the city. Everyone should be on high alert until we sort this out." The betas left to take care of their orders and Xavier dialed the Carson pack. "Isaiah Carson," "Hello friend," "So, did you find your mate? When can Sophie and I come over and meet her?" Xavier could practically feel his friend bouncing with excitement. Xavier had been awake for over 24 hours. He was tired and Carson's joy was sapping what little energy he had left. The reminder that he had yet to claim his mate only added more to his exhaustion. He yearned to drop everything and return to the motel. He wanted to go to her and make sure the world knew she was his. Rubbing his face and taking a deep breath he organized his thoughts. "No, Carson not yet. Unfortunately, we have had a problem. Turns out Terrence may have been right. Early this morning we had four unknown wolves on our property. One of them was killed but they got way to close to my pack. I wanted to warn you and ask you if you had any intruders." "What? That's distressing. No intruders here but thanks for the warning. I'll let you know if anything changes," "I'm going to call Michaels and see if he has any information. We might need to meet with our region's Alphas again to protect out lands," "Well, keep me in the loop." "No problem. Talk to you soon," Xavier had a similar conversation with Michaels. He had no problem with intruders but promised to stay vigilant. Hanging up his phone Xavier put his head down on his desk. As soon as he shut his eyes Jordan's face appeared. Her bright eyes and soft skin haunted him. Her face gave him a new burst of energy. Xavier jumped up, grabbed his keys, and headed out to get his mate. Leaving his office he ran into the last person he wanted to see. Delia had piercing blue eyes and exuded an intense sensuality that caught most men off guard. She had almost perfected the art of manipulation. Delia didn't believe in doing anything she could make someone else do for her. When Xavier was younger he had been tempted by her mysterious charm. At one point he had even believed himself in love with her. She had bewitched him with her secretive smile and swaying hips but he soon learned that Delia's one true love was herself. Xavier had only caught on to her schemes for power when he had overheard her speaking with another girl about how she planned on ruling when Xavier became Alpha and they were mated. She had told her friend Rose that she could make Xavier do anything she wanted as long as she was sleeping with him. Rose asked if she loved him causing Delia to laugh loudly. Xavier could still see the cold expression on her face when she had tossed her long hair over her shoulder and said "Don't be stupid. Love is for fools." Xavier had been heartbroken. He never told anyone about the conversation he had heard. That night, when Delia had come to his room, he'd told her they were through and shut the door in her shocked face. Years later Delia still did not seem to understand that Xavier would never take her as his mate. "Hey there Alpha," Delia said licking her lips and reaching out to stroke his chest. Xavier snarled and took a step back. He was not in the mood for Delia's games, especially now. "I missed you. We should spend more time together –" Xavier wasn't in the mood,"Delia we have been over for years. Go find someone else to seduce. I have business to take care of." He pushed past her surprised face and right into Mina. "Hello, son. I was bringing you some food but it seems like you are already on your way out again. Did you even sleep?" "No time for sleep," kissing Mina's cheek and grabbing the plate off the tray she carried Xavier thought of another way to get Delia off his back. "Besides, how can I stop to sleep when my mate is waiting for me in the city?" Xavier grinned, stuffing food in his mouth. Between Delia and Mina the news would be around the compound in no time but he couldn't care less. Both women were speechless. The grin on Xavier's face made Mina giddy. She had hoped Xavier would find his mate soon. He needed a good woman in his life. Delia, on the other hand, was trying desperately to hide her fury. She had always believed that somehow she could get her claws back into her Alpha but if he had found his mate her chances were greatly diminished. "That's great sweetie. Tell me all about it. What's she like? What's her name? Why are you just telling me about this now? Why isn't she here?" Xavier was not prepared for Mina's barrage of questions as she followed him out the door. "Mina, calm down. I promise when I actually get a chance to meet her I will personally introduce you." Rushing to his car he ran into Derek. "We just finished making all the adjustments in security. Where are you going?" Mina caught up to the pair as Xavier was climbing into the SUV. Leaning through the window Mina grabbed his face. "He is going to bring his mate back here to meet me. I'm so proud! However, he has told me nothing about her." Derek turned to Mina with a large smirk. "Mina" Derek beamed pulling the woman off of Xavier "I can tell you all about how they met." Derek took Mina's arm and turned back to the main house as he told her the story. Xavier, thrilled to be back on his search, raced out of the compound and back to the motel. ------ Walter was just getting off his shift at the motel when the black SUV pulled up. Walter's nightmare stepped out of the car somehow looking just as menacing in the morning light as he did shrouded in darkness. He tried to hide but he seemed to zone in on him immediately. "Walter, don't try to hide from me. I just have some simple questions for you." "Wh . . . what do you want? I ain't done nothing. I swear," Walter held his hands up and backed away from Xavier slowly. "I just want to know about Jordan." "Sh . . . she's still here. Hasn't checked out. She did make a deposit for the week." "Ok, go on then," Xavier rushed around the building towards room 201. With each step his heart beat quickened until there she was. Right in front of him. She was more beautiful than he remembered. They sunlight shimmering in her hair. Xavier's human and wolf sides were at war with each other. His wolf, tongue hanging out of his mouth, urged him to run and claim her while his human side knew he needed to wait. He was rooted to the spot watching his mate lock her door and run down the block. Gaining control of his wolf Xavier followed his mate at a distance down the block to a small tourist shop called Small Treasures. Keeping out of sight he watched his lovely mate through the shop window and began to formulate a plan. ------ After Jordan had liberated the green-eyed man of his wallet she had travelled through the city looking for a job and lodging. Searching every hole in the wall establishment she could find Jordan finally found a small shop in need of an employee. It sat sandwiched between two other more prominent shops. The shop, called Small Treasures, sold worthless trinkets to tourists and those who couldn't hold onto a buck. It was tiny with few employees. The owner, a kind old man named Henry, was thrilled the moment she inquired about the advertisement in the large display window. She was about to give up and find a motel when she had seen the sign. The small bell chimed as she entered and the old man behind the register had greeted her warmly. Following a short chat Henry hired her without reservation. In the few minutes they had talked the pair felt like they had become fast friends. The cash she had stolen the day before had given her the ability to pay for a room in a rundown motel that offered a bit of privacy and cheap prices. The motel was two blocks up from the tiny shop for which she now restocked the shelves. She pulled the tacky knick-knacks out of the Styrofoam packaging and placed them carefully on the glass display shelves. Snow globes and brightly painted ceramic figurines filled her vision but all she saw were warm green eyes in that handsome masculine face. The shock that passed between them haunted her dreams even now. After watching him disappear into the office building the day before she had not stopped thinking of him. He even invaded her dreams. At one point in the middle of the night she could have sworn she felt him nearby. It was excruciating for some reason knowing she would never see him again but she pushed it aside as well as she could. She knew better than to dream of the impossible. "Sweetie, it's your lunch time. Go take a break. I'll finish here" Henry smiled kindly as he handed her the bag she kept under the register and ushered her towards the door. "I won't have my favorite employee worked to death on her first day. That would be most unfortunate!" Henry chuckled kindly adding laugh lines to his already wrinkled face. "I'm almost done here. I have just one more box –" "Don't be silly dearie I can manage. Go on out into the sunshine. There will be plenty to do when you get back in an hour" The old man hobbled over to the front door guiding the girl in front of him. She had only been working for him half a day and he could already tell she was a hard worker. He liked the dark haired young woman and was happy she walked into his shop when he needed the help. "Okay, I'm going but I will take care of those heavy boxes in the back. I don't want you to hurt yourself" "This old man's heart is touched that you care child" "What are you talking about old man?" Jordan joked. "I just need the job" she said as she skipped out the door pulling a well worn paperback out of her bag. Henry laughed as he shut the door behind her. She was a good child. ----- It had been a long time since Jordan had actually liked the people she worked with. Usually her job entailed perverted guys who couldn't keep their hands to themselves and buildings full of cockroaches. Small Treasures may not have been an excessively prosperous shop but it was clean and the owner was kind so she was happy to stay. As she stepped out into the sunlight, book in hand she contemplated where she should go on her break. Her motel was close but she hated to spend any more time there than she had too so she made her way to a small café that had outdoor seating and indulged in a burger and chocolate milkshake with her meager funds. Content with her meal she settled down in the warmth of the sun to try and forget that handsome face and disappear into her favorite book. The pages of the well loved novel were soft between her fingers as she flipped to where she had last left Edmond the protagonist. She had read The Count of Monte Cristo multiple times. She could tell the long story all the way through without difficulty and recite her favorite quotes as though she had written them herself. Yet it was the only book she carried with her everywhere she went. She picked up the novel years ago in an open trash can. The novel had already been well used and the cover jaggedly torn off probably the reason for it being discarded. But it was Jordan's small treasure. She had just endured Edmond's tragic imprisonment when her years of experience alerted her to the presence of someone watching her. Not wanting her watcher to know she had caught on to his intent gaze she continued to stare at her book. Trying to determine if her onlooker was a threat was difficult without the visual assessment but she listened intently and felt the tension around her. Living alone had taught her to be vigilant. She could assess the feelings around her and determine if there was any danger. Closing her eyes for a brief moment Jordan reached out but it wasn't danger she sensed. She couldn't identify what it was but it made her slightly uncomfortable. Realizing she was due back at the shop anyway, Jordan swiftly packed her tattered book back into her bag and left the sun warmed table of the little café to begin her journey back. Passing through the crowded street Jordan began to feel a little more at ease as she left her onlooker back at the café. "Hello, Henry. I hope you didn't miss me too much," Jordan called as she strolled through door. "Jordan dear did you have a good break?" "Just fine thank you. I hope you didn't hurt yourself caring those boxes" "No, no I left them in the back just as you told me. I swear you're a bossy little thing and here I thought I was in charge" "I'm just looking out for you" Jordan declared. "Well, I'm stepping out for a moment. Watch the shop for me?" "No problem Henry" Jordan called after him. Laying her bag under the register Jordan brought the largest of the boxes into the small store front. Unpacking the box of miniature ceramic animals Jordan began placing them next to the cash register when her day dreams of the green-eyed man began again. Picking up a small black kitten out of the box she held it close unaware of the man entering the store behind her. Stealing My Heart Ch. 03 a/n: Thanks again for all you comments! I hope you enjoy this chapter. * "Hey sweetheart," a low voice sounded behind Jordan startling her out of her reverie. Turning quickly she prepared to defend herself before she realized she was working in the shop not out on a dangerous street. "Oh, hello. How can I help you today?" Jordan set down the ceramic kitten she was holding to give her full attention to the blonde man standing before her. Though he was smiling at her she sensed something off about the man. He would have been attractive if his brown eyes weren't so cruel and his presence was more threatening than the one at the café. Stepping away from the man, she made sure the baseball bat Henry stashed in the corner was in reach and kept an eye on the exits. She wasn't sure of his intentions but she knew from experience not to take any chances. "Are you looking for something specific? Or maybe a gift for someone special?" "Yea, I'm looking for something specific. I saw you through the window and thought a good looking girl like you would look good on my arm tonight. I am going to show you a real good time," the man said leering and reaching for her. Swatting his hand away and inching closer to the bat Jordan gave the stranger an incredulous glare. "I sell ornaments and ceramic figurines beyond that I can't help you." The smile on the stranger's face waivered slightly. "Sweetheart, I'm Marco," he said flexing his muscles in a way he must have thought was alluring "Girls throw themselves at me and I'm willing to spend my time on you. So I will be picking you up at 9. Where do you live?" Jordan laughed. She couldn't imagine how this arrogant man could actually think she wanted him. "Forgive me if I don't swoon, but I'm not interested. Now unless you plan on buying something, you need to leave," she said sternly preparing to return to work. Jordan could see how her disregard infuriated Marco, his faced turned red, the vein in his forehead throbbed dangerously and his smile turned into a scowl. Striking out Marco grabbed Jordan's wrist in a bruising grip dragging her closer to his imposing figure. Leaning in, Marco got right in Jordan's face. "You will be going out with me. It's not an option," he sneered spit flying out of his mouth. "Let go!," Jordan yelled. She could deal with pushy assholes but this one had gone too far. Before he could finish his threats she punched Marco square in the nose feeling the satisfying crunch and warm blood drip from his face. Marco hollered and released her now bruised wrist allowing her the chance to lunge for the bat leaning against the wall. "You bitch! How dare you . . ." "Kitten, are you ready to go?," both heads turned quickly to the door in confusion. Jordan's eyes widened and her mouth went dry as her day dream strolled into the shop. Warm green eyes gazed into hers taking her breath away. Jordan stumbled forward instinctively preparing to reach out for him when Marco rounded on the man. "Get out of here. She's with me," he yelled one hand trying to stop the flow of blood while the other waved furiously at the stranger. Her green-eyed dream glowered down at Marco without a word. Standing face to face for a moment Marco's snarling expression became unsure, then he began to shrink towards the door. "Man, I'm sorry. I just saw her through the window." The stranger continued to glare, arms crossed over his broad chest, as Marco sputtered explanations nervously. "She's hot I couldn't pass that up. But if she's yours . . . I'll just be on my way." By the time Marco was at the door his voice was barely a whisper. He held his hands up in front of his bleeding face trying to shelter himself from the powerful man's wordless threat then he scampered out into the street. Marco wasn't one to be scared easily but this man oozed a dangerous power. He'd have to make his move on the girl another time when she was alone. He considered just leaving her alone but he couldn't let some bitch best him like that and get away with it. He'd be back one day soon. Jordan could have laughed at the deflation in Marco's demeanor but she was distracted by her stranger slowly stalking toward her. The bat she had picked up to defend herself hung limp in her hand and it wasn't until he was standing directly in front of her that she realized she'd stopped breathing. Her stranger's intense stare seemed to excite and unnerve her at the same time. Jordan's pounding heart felt as though it was trying to escape her chest. Taking a deep breath she stepped back and took a firmer grip on the bat. "I didn't need your help. I was doing just fine on my own," Jordan snapped trying to hide her body's traitorous reaction. The stranger's gaze warmed her skin and stained her cheeks with a rosy blush. He was the first man to ever make her feel this way. She knew nothing about him but she longed to reach out and stroke his face. She wanted to lift up on her tip toes and press her lips to his and feel his arms holding her close to his hard chest but all these new feelings only brought uncertainty. They seemed to come out of nowhere. She didn't quite trust them so she brought up her defenses. "He was hurting you. I was just trying to help," "Thanks but I can take care of myself. Now, did you want to buy something or would you like a broken nose too?," Jordan demanded pointing the bat at him. "Well, I would love to buy something but a beautiful girl stole my wallet," the stranger's lips turned up in a small smirk and Jordan's hazel eyes widened in surprise. In all the time she had spent daydreaming about him she had completely forgotten the circumstances of their meeting. Turning abruptly Jordan went behind the counter to put some distance between them but he followed so they stood with the counter as an inadequate barrier between them. "Look, I'm sorry I'll pay you back. I still have a few dollars left. I just . . ." Jordan was flustered. She had never been confronted by a mark before and had no idea what to do besides return what little money she had left. "Don't worry about it. I don't want the money." "What?" Standing up from reaching for her bag Jordan raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "What do you want then?" "I'd like to spend time with you --," Disgusted, Jordan turned away. "Look, come back tomorrow and I will pay you back then," no matter how attractive she found this stranger or the impossible feelings floating through her body she was not going to pimp herself out for anything. Understanding his mistake Xavier tried to begin again. "My name is Xavier. And I just meant that I would like to get to know you in a strictly friendly, hands-off kind of way. It's not every day I meet someone who is able to pick my pocket." Xavier, she loved that name, uncommon and strong. It fit him. "Yea well your body guards were kind of useless. And it seems" she added looking out the window "you fired them." "Body guards?" "The three giant goons you had following you yesterday," "Oh, them," Xavier chuckled sending exciting shivers down Jordan's spine. "They weren't my goons, though Derek will find it funny you thought so." "They were watching you like goons" "Well they're just . . . over protective. Look we could go somewhere public, while the sun is up. We could get something to eat and just talk." Still suspicious, Jordan narrowed her eyes. "I stole your wallet and you're asking me out on a date?" "What can I say? You intrigue me. If it makes you feel any better we can call it payback for saving you from that menace." Everything in Jordan's experience told her to run. Being connected to anyone, especially strangers, no matter how hot they were, was never a good idea. You can't trust them. But something about Xavier called to Jordan. His smile, his very presence, sparked something new inside her. So even though she knew better she decided to give in just this once. "Fine, you can take me to dinner when I'm done with my shift here. Around 5?" "I'd like that. I'll come back at 4:45 to pick you up. I don't want you leaving without me," Xavier smiled and took her hand that rested on the counter between them. The shock of the touch ran through their finger tips setting a fire alight in their eyes. "I can't wait" Xavier said raising Jordan's hand to his lips and placing a soft kiss on her knuckles, never taking his lustful emerald eyes off of hers. Jordan could feel the heat of the blush returning to her cheeks. No one had ever done that before. Though, truthfully, she probably would have hit anyone else who tried. As Xavier prepared to leave another question came to Jordan's mind, "Why did you call me kitten when you came in?" Xavier pointed to the forgotten ceramic kitten she'd placed next to the register. "You seemed rather fond of it" Astonishment ran through Jordan's body. How long had he been watching her before he came in? "My name is Jordan," She called as he passed over the threshold. Xavier smiled at her over his shoulder, "I know," he said before he stepped out into the sunlight and disappeared down the street. -------- All morning Xavier had watched Jordan through the shop window. Each time he had tried to formulate a plan he would be distracted by the way she seemed to dance through the store. Her movements were graceful and her kind smile warmed him more than the sunshine. Few people visited Small Treasures but each person that entered the shop was treated courteously even the old man he assumed was her boss seemed to like her. Her thoughtful expression as she shelved the tiny figurines made him smile as well. Everything he noticed about his mate made his wolf see that she would make a wonderful Alpha Female. When he followed her to the café he tried to work up the nerve to talk to her but she looked so peaceful sitting at her table reading her book so he settled for watching over her. While at the café Xavier noticed that he too was starving. He was going to eat at the café but they didn't exactly cater to the giant appetite of the shifter community. Running down the street he ate quickly at a pack run restaurant and returned just in time to see his mate's fist smash into the face of the animal who was manhandling her. A range of emotions flew through Xavier. He was furious that another man dared to touch what belonged to him yet he was so proud of the strength and courage his little mate showed. His wolf howled within him ready to tear this intruder apart but he took a deep breath and reminded his wolf that if they scared their mate she would not come to them willingly. When he had himself under control he entered the shop to save his mate. As it turned out his mate was not too thrilled about being saved. Her spirit excited him. His wolf wanted to chase her and make her submit to him when she turned away. He wanted to run his hand along her lush curves, press her body to his, and bury his nose in her chocolate hair. Her delicious aroma wafted towards him. Warm honey and roses assaulted him and made his mouth water. Blood rushed to his cock making his pants feel tight. No woman had ever had such an instantaneous effect on him with just one glance. Her expressive eyes spoke of uncertainty and suspicion yet he also saw the longing she tried to hide and smelled a faint arousal. It was all he could do to walk away after getting her to agree to an early dinner. For the moment he could breathe. He had finally spoken to his mate, protected her, it was only a matter of time before they would complete the mating. Five o'clock would not come around quick enough but Xavier tried to keep busy. He returned to the pack owned restaurant he'd eaten at earlier called Silver Moon. Silver Moon was an exclusive restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and long waiting list. They always had a table ready for their Alpha in a secluded part of the restaurant and though Xavier would have loved to have Jordan to himself he wanted to make sure she felt comfortable with him. As he entered the restaurant his various pack members bowed their head in respect and the manager came running up to meet him. "Back so soon Alpha?," Ron said smiling widely. "I'm bringing a friend to dinner. She's a little . . . shy and I wanted to see about getting a table more up front," "Would this be the mysterious mate everyone has been in an uproar about all day?" Xavier sighed. He should have known the entire pack would have heard by now. Gossip, especially about the Alpha, dispersed quickly through the pack no matter how boring. It probably took seconds for everyone to know about the future Alpha Female. Even through his frustration Xavier couldn't help but grin. Just thinking about Jordan was enough to cool his annoyance with the pack grapevine. He could sense every ear waiting for his response. "Yes, we'll be here around 5," he said quickly causing Ron to practically squeal in delight. A rather exuberant pack member, he was truly happy to find out that his Alpha had finally settled. "Excellent! I will personally put together a table for the two of you. Maybe something next to the bay window there or next to the fireplace?" "I think she would prefer the window. Other than that I trust you will see to it," "Of course, of course. I will see to everything" Ron exclaimed waving Xavier out. "Oh and flowers. Let's get a fresh bouquet of flowers for the couple" Xavier heard Ron saying as he left. Retrieving his car Xavier called Derek back at the compound. Derek quickly assured him no new wolves had shown up but the extra patrols were still going. "X, how's your mate?" Derek asked slyly. Xavier rolled his eyes, "When I get to spend time with her I will let you know." "Mina, asks me every few minutes if I have an update and everyone is waiting to meet her so you better hurry up. You know how the pack is. If you take too long they will just take matters into their own hands." "Yea, yea. We're going out to dinner in a few hours. I'll talk to you later." "Good Luck," hanging up Xavier decided to drive around the city. Trying to waste time without appearing to be a stalker was difficult. Waiting outside the shop just wasn't enough anymore. Now that he had talked to her he wanted to go and hold her, kiss her, make love to her. Which, unfortunately, would probably end with Jordan trying to kick his ass. He didn't know how he would get through the evening while keeping up with his "hands off" promise. Driving through the streets he grasped the steering wheel tightly imagining how he would like to peel off the t-shirt and jeans she was wearing and trail his hands and lips over her smooth skin. He couldn't help but think about the how he wanted to kiss her pink lips and run his tongue along her slender throat. He would even kill to argue with her. Her strength boiled his blood in the most appealing way. Xavier drove in circles barely noticing anything going on outside the window. It felt like forever until 4:45 rolled around. He parked outside the shop, unable to stop himself any longer he entered. Both the old man and Jordan were busy helping customers but as he entered Jordan looked up. ---------- Henry had noticed Jordan's excitement when he returned from his break and pushed Jordan to tell him about her upcoming date. Henry didn't have a daughter of his own but he was beginning to feel protective of his new employee at an alarming rate. As they worked Henry began his first fatherly lecture. "I know you're a good girl but boys can be dangerous. All they think about is sex so you have to be on your guard. Don't let this guy take advantage of you," Henry warned. "Uh . . . thanks Henry. I'll be careful." Jordan never had someone be so concerned about her welfare. Even though she already knew how to protect herself it touched her. "Don't put yourself in a compromising situation and never do anything you are not 100% comfortable with," Henry continued to give Jordan as much advice as possible. The afternoon brought a barrage of customers to Small Treasures ending their chat so the pair had returned to work. Jordan was glad for the distraction to take her mind of the sexy man who was taking her to dinner. Jordan was helping a woman find a snow globe for her daughter when he entered the shop. She looked up and felt tingling warmth take over her nearly causing her to drop the globe. Xavier could practically feel the heat coming off her caramel skin when he entered and she immediately turned back to her customer. Xavier flitted among the store vaguely looking at the knick knacks and discretely checking out his mate. Every second he found something new to lust over. The sway of her hips and the sparkle in her eyes. He found himself praying to the Goddess Luna that she would give him the strength not to jump her. As the last customer left the shop the old man turned on Xavier. "Son, what are your intentions with my employee?" "Um, excuse me?" Xavier looked down at the old man confused. "I may have only known Jordan for a short time, but this girl is very special," the pair heard a snort near the register. Jordan had her hand covering her mouth as she tried to suppress her laughter. The sight of the slightly stooped old man bullying the dark giant was ridiculous yet sweet. "I'm serious young man," "We are just going to dinner. I already promised to be a gentleman." "Right. I'm watching you. But if you hurt her" the old man said, reaching up to jab his finger into Xavier's chest, "I will hurt you." Xavier could have laughed at the old man's threat but he admired his loyalty however foolish it may have been. "Henry, not that I don't appreciate it but, I can take care of myself," Jordan reminded him. She seemed to be reminding people of this a lot lately. "What kind of man would I be if I let you go out without threatening your date first? I know you don't have a father out here to do it so I'm just looking out for you." Jordan rolled her eyes. "Now run along and have fun. I can close the shop myself." "Are you sure? I don't mind staying-" Henry cut her off with a wave of his hand. "Child I was tending this store before you were born and I can still do it today." "Alright," Jordan said scooping up her bag "I will see you tomorrow then." "Good bye. And don't forget what I said young man. I will come after you." "Yes sir" Xavier replied nodding to Henry and holding the door open for his mate. Xavier led Jordan to his large SUV. Opening the door for her, Xavier admired Jordan's effortless leap into the tall car. Making sure she was securely in the car he hustled around to the other side. "So, where are we headed?" Xavier could hear the nervous timbre in her voice. She pushed her thick hair behind her ears and twisted her hands in her lap. "A local restaurant called Silver Moon. They have wonderful food." "Oh, okay," Xavier had no idea what to say so they drove the short distance to the restaurant in an uneasy silence. After helping her out of the car they approached the entrance of the restaurant. From the parking lot Xavier could see the curious looks from his pack member just inside the door. It took him a moment to realize Jordan wasn't by his side. Turning he saw her gaping at the restaurant. "What's wrong kitten?" Shaking her head at the nickname, she had a feeling he wasn't going to let it go, she continued to look at the extravagant establishment. "I can't go in there." "Why not?" "Look at me" she exclaimed. "I'm wearing a faded t-shirt and jeans. The waitresses are dressed better than I am. They wouldn't let me clean the floors. Besides, I'm more of a greasy diner, street vendor kinda girl." Returning to her side Xavier took her trembling hand in one of his. Gently brushing his fingers along her cheek he looked deeply into her eyes. "I think you are beautiful," he whispered causing her to shudder and looked down embarrassed. "And they had better let you in because I own it. But, if you are uncomfortable we could go somewhere else. There's a small diner up the street. I wouldn't call it greasy but it's more casual." Stealing My Heart Ch. 03 Jordan smiled with relief making Xavier and his wolf rumble with satisfaction. He'd give anything to see that smile on her face all the time. Turning her down the street he waved to Ron who looked completely distraught at their departure. Anne's Diner was a charming little place with checkered red and white table cloths and brown plastic booths that would stick to you in the heat. It wasn't very crowded at this early dinner hour but there was a pleasant buzz of conversation throughout the diner. Finding an open booth near the front they took a seat. An older waitress came up to take their order popping gum and apparently bored. She quickly wrote down their drink orders and shuffled away. "So, are you going to tell me how you found me?" Jordan asked drumming her fingers on the table between them. Xavier hadn't thought about that question. He couldn't exactly tell her that he trailed her using his shifter enhanced scent. "I . . . um . . . I just happened to see you at the café this afternoon and followed you back to the shop." "And instead of calling the cops or forcing me to pay you back you asked me out?" "I have plenty of cash" "Clearly," she said rolling her eyes. "And like I said earlier you intrigued me. I'm usually pretty vigilant but I didn't even see you coming." "It's a gift," Jordan shrugged. "How exactly did you develop such a gift." Pausing for a moment to consider what she should tell him she decided on the truth. Something about him made her want to share. "Not all foster families care about their kids like they should. I learned to steal what I needed at an early age. And when I left foster care it became necessary at times when I couldn't find a job." Jordan looked up from the table to see a strange expression on Xavier's face and felt the need to add "I'm not a professional thief. I don't steal for fun." Xavier's heart bled for his mate. He couldn't imagine growing up without his family. His wolf howled in sorrow within him. Family and pack members meant everything to a shifter, to know his mate was alone for so long was devastating. "What brought you here?" "I've been travelling since I was 17. Nothing kept me in the places I was in so I moved on. I guess I've just been looking for somewhere that felt like . . . home." Jordan was shocked that she actually admitted that out loud and to a stranger. Embarrassed she stared at the table. What was it about this man that made her talk so openly? "What about you?" she said trying to change the subject. "Have you always lived in the city?" "I actually live a little bit out of town in a small community. I just work in the city." "And your family?" "It's just me, my parents, and our close-knit community. No siblings, however, I always felt like my friend Derek was as close as any brother." "Derek? You mentioned him before. He was one of your goons?" "Yes" Xavier replied with a smile "He works with me. We were on our way to a conference when we ran into you. We manage a bunch of companies that my father built or bought. When he retired he left me in charge. It's really very boring stuff." Jordan unconsciously leaned forward with her chin resting on her hands a small smile gracing her lips. By the time their waitress returned to take their food orders they had started a comfortable conversation. "What will you have?" The couple had completely forgotten to look at the menu and began quickly browsing through the menu. "Do you know what you want?" Xavier asked. "I don't know. So many things sound delicious." "Order whatever you want. Get three or four things if you can't decide." Turning to the waitress he ordered. "Can I get the steak special with extra mashed potatoes, toast, and a side of scrambled eggs?" The waitress nodded with a raised eyebrow and turned to Jordan. "Um, I guess I will have the grilled cheese with a side of fries." "Are you sure that's all you want?" Xavier asked gently. "Yea, I'm sure." "Ok, kids I'll be back shortly with your order." They continued to talk and getting to know each other a little better. When the food arrived, Jordan's stomach grumbled in anticipation. She hadn't realized how hungry she was until the food covered the table in front of her. Xavier happily watched his mate eat with passion. His wolf was equally excited to be providing for his mate. However, it couldn't wait to hunt for her. She savored every bite she took as if it was the food of the gods. When Jordan realized he was watching her, she set the sandwich down on her plate and looked away embarrassed again. "I really like grilled cheese," "I noticed" Xavier chuckled. "What about you? I think you ordered enough to feed a third world country!" "You don't grow this big by eating like a mouse." "I suppose not. You must do a lot of cooking." "Actually, Mina my housekeeper doesn't allow me in the kitchen." "Not allowed in your own kitchen?" "I may have started a fire. Nothing major." Jordan's boisterous laughter made Xavier smile. Her laugh was loud and didn't seem to be able to come out of such a petite girl but it was warm and genuine. As they continued to eat Xavier noticed her eyeing his mashed potatoes and he slid the small bowl over to her. "Have some." "Thanks," Jordan dug into the mashed potatoes with pleasure. "Well, I love food. I love anything with cheese or chocolate. And cooking! I don't get to do it often but it can be fun." "Maybe you could come by my place and cook for me sometime" Jordan looked up from her meal with narrowed eyes. "You move fast." "I guess I just enjoy spending time with you." "You are surprisingly easy to talk to as well. But we barely know each other and you're already inviting me to your house. Isn't this the part in the movie when I should start getting suspicious of your motives and checking your car for weapons?" "I assure you I have no weapons but my motives may not be so pure" Xavier said with eyes full of heat "but I always keep my promises. And I promised to be a gentleman." The pair stared into each other's eyes. Jordan felt drawn in and began to lose herself in their warmth. His gaze seemed to caress her face and pull her in. Xavier's wolf began panting in his mind as the scent of his mate's arousal drifted across the table. Gripping the table tightly to control himself, Xavier add "beside, we can't have your boss coming after me. He could really do some damage." Jordan laughed as the tension was diffused between them. "I can't promise anything but I'll ask him to go easy on you" The rest of dinner was spent in comfortable companionship. As they walked out of the diner Xavier held his arm out and Jordan hesitantly took it. Closing her eyes for a moment Jordan felt the evening sunlight on her face and when she opened them again Xavier was looking down at her. For the first time since she could remember she felt safe and completely at ease. She didn't feel the need to look over her shoulder or watch out for any unforeseen dangers. So, denying her instincts, as she found herself doing a lot lately, she nestled closer into Xavier's warmth. She felt his chest vibrate sending a similar vibration through her body and into her core causing her underwear to become damp. She found she rather enjoyed the feeling. Xavier became very aware of the woman pressed into his side. His wolf rumbled in excitement and pranced around in joy. Just hours ago he barely knew anything about this amazing woman and now she willing snuggled into his body. It was all he could do not to pull her closer and kiss her in the street but he knew they weren't quite there yet. They walked in silence on the crowded streets until they reached the car. Helping her into the car Xavier leaned in to help with the seatbelt when she began to wrestle with it. The action brought his nose close to her neck where he inhaled her pure delicious scent. Straightening quickly when she stiffened slightly he asked, "Would I be pushing my luck if I asked you to stay out with me tonight?" "I have to work early tomorrow morning." "Okay. How about tomorrow?" "You are persistent. Tomorrow I only work until noon." "May I pick you up for lunch?" "I'd like that." "I should get you home now so that tomorrow will come sooner." Xavier said giving her a hand into the car. "I'm just staying at Central Motel at the moment. It's just a block away from Small Treasures. Not exactly a home but it works." "I know where that is," he said with a grin. Rushing around the car without using too much of his shifter speed Xavier hoped into the car to enjoy her scent. The drive was short and unlike their first drive this one had a more comfortable silence. Pulling up to the entrance Xavier was even more unhappy than before to see the sleazy motel. It seemed as though even more lowlifes occupied the darkening parking lot. "My room is around back." Parking the car, Xavier was out and around to the other side of the car before Jordan had taken off her seat belt. When he opened the door she jumped. "You're quick," she said trying to slow her rapidly beating heart. "Can I take you to your door?" Xavier said offering her his hand. "Thank you," together they walked across the lot and up the stairs to her door. Standing outside the door Xavier took a deep breath as Jordan scavenged in her bag for the room key. He was in awe of the woman standing before him. She was smart, tough, and beautiful and so close to being all his. If everything kept progressing at this rate they would be mated quite soon. "I know I promised to be a complete gentleman but I would like to kiss you." Jordan tried to hide her shock. "Um . . . uh . . . I --" Xavier leaned in slowly trying not to startle her. "I promise. Just one simple kiss" he whispered his face inches from hers. He could feel Jordan's warm breath and hear her heartbeat increasing. When he gently stroked his fingers across her cheek her breath hitched. Her blush intrigued him and his wolf started shaking in anticipation. His green eyes began to glow and he pulled her close struggling not to ravish her. Jordan's mind went fuzzy. Her body warmed as she felt his arms wrap around her as she'd dreamed. And all she could think of was how good he smelled and how right it felt in his arms. No one had ever held her like this and it felt better than she had ever imagined. Looking up into his eyes she could have sworn she saw them glow but as his lips descended she closed her eyes her fingers unconsciously tangling in his shirt. His soft lips caressed her cheek where his fingers had been and then lightly grazed her own lips. As he pulled back a small moan escaped her lips. She heard him sigh before placing another soft kiss on her lips. The kiss was so short, their lips only touching for a brief second, but a multitude of emotions consumed her and she was lost to the moment. The chaste kisses were barely enough for Xavier but he had made her a promise. The feel and taste of his mate's skin combined with her body pressed deliciously to his was the most amazing sensation he had ever experienced. Her response was even more appealing. It left him aching to strip her clothes off and take her rough and fast. His wolf liked the idea and kept sending him erotic images of them naked and rutting on the forest floor. It took all his strength to pull away from those lips. He pulled away, gently disentangling her fingers and grabbing her keys. Xavier opened the door, briefly scanning the tiny room for threats and ushered her through the door. "Lock the door tight," he warned. She still seemed dazed as she nodded. "Yea, I will" "Good night kitten." He whispered stealing one last brief kiss before exiting the room quickly before his wolf could change his mind. Xavier drove his car around the block before parking and returning to the motel. He found a darkening corner to hide in. He couldn't see into the room but he could watch over and keep any threats away. Stealing My Heart Ch. 04 It took awhile for Jordan to get over her haze. Xavier had left her feeling confused, aroused, and longing for one more kiss. Locking the doors she dumped her bag and collapsed on the bed. Thanks to Xavier she wouldn't need to scavenge dinner from the vending machines. Now, as she lay on the bed, Xavier kept running through her mind. She remembered how his eyes would glow with lust as he looked at her making her skin prickle appealingly. Hopping of the bed she decided a bath would be relaxing and would hopefully calm her racing nerves. She watched the small tub fill slowly and enjoyed the steam swirling around the room. Stripping down and tying up her thick hair she gingerly climbed into the tub. The hot water swirled around her body in an inviting caress drawing her into a drowsy state. But this seemed to only increase her thoughts of Xavier. The thoughts of his broad chest, his dark hair, his full lips, the rumbling of his chest brought a deep ache to her core. She drew her washcloth across her skin and pressed her legs together but it didn't seem to help relieve the ache. The cloth rubbed against her puckered nipples sending more pleasurable tremors to her core. Letting the washcloth fall to the bottom of the tub she ran her fingers over her body. Touching herself so intimately was rare for Jordan but her visions of Xavier encouraged her fingers to drift to her pussy. Opening her legs she let her fingers slide along her wet slit and across her clit sending enjoyable shivers through her body. The small tub didn't allow for much room so she lifted one leg out of the tub resting it on the ledge giving her more access and spreading her pussy to the warmth of the water. Thoughts of Xavier bombarded her making her wetter and more in need of release. Her fingers worked furiously on her clit. A sudden image of Xavier as a black wolf popped into her mind. She wasn't sure where it came from or how but the glossy dark fur, strength in his stance, and the glow of his emerald sent her over the edge. Her hips lifted, her legs shook, and her breasts heaved as she moaned loudly while her fingers played between her toned thighs. Her release was gratifying and exhausting. Relaxing back into the heated water Jordan closed her eyes. She forgot about the strange image as her heartbeat slowed and returned to normal. Finishing her bath Jordan climbed out of the tub and put on a tank top and panties and climbed under the sheets. She meant to do some reading but all she could think of was Xavier. He was kind, smart, and so sexy. Why he was interested in her baffled Jordan. No matter how hard she tried to focus on her book her thoughts always drifted back to the mark who inserted himself into her life. She tried desperately to remind herself not to get her hopes up but the thought of his tender kisses consumed her. She wanted to know what it would be like to return to his embrace and kiss him back. Her heart had gone off and become attached while her mind tried to reel it back in. Giving up on reading Jordan set her alarm and turned off the light. She lay thinking of Xavier until sleep brought her more images of the black wolf she wouldn't remember in the morning. --------- Xavier watched his mate's door intently making sure no one approached. He wondered what she was doing in her room when his phone rang. "Hello?" "Xavier son, we need to meet tomorrow. My pack had a run in with some unknown wolves this afternoon" "Is everyone okay?" "Oh, yes! We didn't catch any of them but now that we know for sure that there are possible rogues we should take preliminary action. I already spoke with Terrence and Michaels they can meet at 12:30. Can you be there?" Xavier groaned. Why did all of this have to happen while he was trying to court his mate? But protecting the pack was his duty getting more kisses would have to wait. "Yea, I'll be there." "Good. At our regular conference spot. Now why do you sound so blue?" "I'm supposed to have lunch with my mate tomorrow. But I guess I will have to postpone." "The meeting will be rather short. Terrence says he has things to do." Carson huffed. "Suddenly, he's not so worried about rogue wolves when they aren't on his territory." "So we'll be out by 1:30?" "1:30. Then you can get back to your mate. Maybe introduce me to the special girl?" "Carson we've only had one meal together. I might want to wait before I introduce her to everyone." "Fine, fine. But I expect to meet her soon," he answered merrily. "When she's officially mine you will be one of my first calls." "One of?" "Mina will never forgive me if I don't let her know first," "Ah, yes. You don't want to anger her like when you started that fire," He chuckled. "Anyway, tomorrow 12:30. I'll be there," sighing Xavier hung up and dialed Derek. "How did it go? Have you completed the mating?" Xavier ground his teeth in annoyance, trying not to growl. He wished he could go into his mate's room and hold her close. He wanted to kiss her thoroughly instead of the light kisses they'd shared earlier but now he had to wait even longer than planned. "No. We're meeting the other Alphas again tomorrow. Carson had some troubles with the possible rogue wolves and we need to make some decisions. Anything changed?" "Those wolves haven't returned. Should I let Tomas and Zach know about the meeting tomorrow?" "Sure, I'm heading back to the compound now. "That's good. You sound tired" "I haven't slept in almost 48 hours." "Well, get back here and sleep. We'll see you soon" Xavier hung up and returned to the car. He yearned to go to his mate and sleep with her in his arms but he had to settle for his inadequate yet arousing daydreams. Xavier sat in his car outside the main house. He knew as soon as he got out he would be bombarded with his pack wanting answers. He just didn't have the resolve to deal with it right now. Making up his mind Xavier decided to go for a run. He got of the car, stripped, and shifted letting his wolf come forward. Running swiftly he headed deep into the forest surrounding the compound. He felt some of the tension roll away as he lengthened his stride. Paying little attention to where he was going Xavier continued to run faster and faster enjoying the wind in his fur and the burn in his muscles distracting him from thoughts of his gorgeous mate sleeping in the dangerous motel. Finally, his wolf led them back to the main house. Shifting quickly, Xavier grab pants from the supply shed on the edge of the forest, and headed back to the house. Thoughts of his mate returned unsolicited giving Xavier a stern expression which thankfully kept his pack members at bay. Although very serious Xavier rarely lost his temper but his expression kept anyone from pushing their luck. By this time everyone knew that their Alpha had found his mate and had yet to claim her. If anything could make a shifter rage that could so the majority gave him a wide berth. Cautiously Zach and Derek approached his Alpha. "I heard another meeting has been called for tomorrow. What time should we be ready?" "The meeting is at 12:30. We will leave here at 11:30. I have to make a stop first." "Got it." "Any changes in patrol?" "No, Alpha. No new wolves or threats." "Let anyone going on a run tonight know to stay close to the compound. No sleeping in the forest either." "Yes, Alpha. Eva is waiting for you in the office." Derek added as they left him. Xavier headed toward his office hoping whatever Eva had to say would be brief. The lack of sleep was starting to take its toll. Eva sat in his chair organizing his papers. "Anyone else sitting in my chair and I'd tear their throat out" Xavier grumbled leaning against the door. "I wish you would. Then I wouldn't feel compelled to keep your papers in order. I'm beginning to think when you asked me to be Alpha Female you really were asking for a glorified secretary." Eva snorted. Giving the desk one more glance to make sure everything was in order she stood up and let Xavier take his seat in the plush black chair. "Eva you are so much more than a secretary. You also make a wonderful therapist." "Gee thanks," she said rolling her eyes. "As you can see you have three stacks of papers on your desk. Derek and I helped with as much as we could but they still need to be review by you and have your signature added. There are a couple letters from the council. It seems there is a conference being held fairly soon and they need a response from you. The last stack are papers Derek and I couldn't figure out. You wrote notes all over them and therefore you have to deal with them." Looking down at his desk he was relieved Derek and Eva were so good at their jobs. Without them he was sure everything would have fallen apart years ago. "Thanks Eva. You're a lifesaver" "Of course. Also, remember that this Friday is the pack barbeque. Xavier had completely forgotten about the bimonthly pack dinner. Most nights the pack members ate with their families or on their own but twice a month the entire pack gathered for a barbeque hosted by the Alpha. He welcomed each of the members and worked to make them feel at home. It was one of the reasons his pack was so close. Their Alpha was sometimes stern but they knew he cared. Xavier respected every member of his pack even the omegas which was unusual. Omegas made up the majority of the pack. They weren't warriors and didn't have a particular skill that could aid the pack but they kept the compound running. Without the omegas a pack had no purpose and would fall apart. Many alphas wouldn't even acknowledge an omega but Xavier knew every pack member by name, welcomed them into his home, and spent time with them. It was something his father had instilled in him so this dinner was important. "I've already talked to Mina. Everything will be ready but I thought with everything going on you might have forgotten." "I did." Eva shook her head. Usually her Alpha was on top of everything in a day his mate had turned him into a mess. He looked so tired and disheveled. "So, X I know that you have been avoiding the topic but how is your mate?" Xavier looked up and narrowed his eyes. "Don't give me that look. As the current Alpha Female I have a right to know about the woman taking my place. Not that I won't be thrilled to give it to her." Eva had been honored when Xavier asked her to be Alpha Female but now she found herself excited to be just another beta. The job was exhausting and she would be glad to not have to deal with the drama between the females anymore, especially Delia. That bitch caused more trouble than she was worth. "She's wonderful" Xavier conceded. "She's smart, strong, and beautiful. You will like her" "Have you told her about what we are?" "Eva we had one dinner together. I didn't want to scare her away." "Yea, I suppose not. Then I wouldn't get to tell her all of my favorite stories about you!" "You wouldn't dare" Xavier growled. "I most definitely will. That's what friends are for" "Ok. Well you just wait until you meet your mate. I've got stories too." "Just you try it X. You may be Alpha but I have some great blackmail stories" Getting up to leave the office Eva turned around once more, "X, leave the papers for one more day. There is nothing pressing. And get some sleep you look awful" she said only half joking. She smiled and left her Alpha. Standing and stretching Xavier made his way to his suite on the upper floor. He was surprised Mina didn't wait up for him to spill details about his mate but she was probably with her mate. Thankfully, he made it to his room with no more interruptions and fell into bed. If he hadn't been so tired he would have noticed the girl under his blue satin sheets. ________ Delia had been plotting since the moment Xavier had mentioned a mate early that morning. The rumors were flying around the pack and when he came home alone she decided she still had a chance to seduce the Alpha and claim her spot as Alpha Female over that stupid bitch Eva. While everyone was distracted she went up to her Alpha's suite, undressed, and lay naked under the sheets. She spread her blonde hair across the pillow and waited. She knew once Xavier saw her milky white breasts and small hips he wouldn't be able to resist and she would be one step closer. When Xavier collapsed beside her Delia fumed. How dare he not even notice her? But she held back the anger and put on a seductive smile. She leaned over him and pressed her breasts to his back. "Hey there sexy" she whispered breathily in his ear. When a smile came over his face she knew she'd won. But suddenly she was flying through the air and hit the plush carpet with a loud thud. ______ Xavier had started dreaming of Jordan the moment he hit the bed. He remembered the feel of her soft body against his when he'd kissed her. When he felt the body behind him he thought he was dreaming of his mate until he heard Delia's voice. Xavier roared and jumped off the bed sending Delia soaring. Xavier's face turned red and for a moment he couldn't even speak. He wolf was shaking and practically frothing at the mouth in fury. "What the hell are you doing in here?" he screamed. Looking at her cowering on the floor infuriated him. How dare she enter his bed uninvited when he longed for was his mate. Thinking of Delia touching him made his stomach turn and his skin crawl. "Get out! Get out now," "Baby, I just wanted to make you feel good" she whined from the floor. She had never seen him so furious in her life. "Get out!" He screamed again. When Delia continued to tremble on the floor Xavier seized her arm lifting her to her feet and dragged her across the room. He wrenched the door open. "I told you years ago we were through. Now I have a mate and I will not tolerate this behavior. I am your Alpha you will remember that. If you ever pull something like this again you will be dismissed from the pack immediately" he seethed. Delia was shocked. Being kicked out of the pack was one of the worst forms of punishment. Wolf shifters lived for their pack being forced out was tantamount to a death threat. Not all wolves could survive on their own. "Do not come on to me ever again." It was still early enough that people were roaming the main house. It got quite as the pack members in the house heard his threat. They cringed at the thought of being kicked out of the pack but they were more alarmed that Delia would dare to approach a mated wolf or at even a potentially mated wolf. It was one of the worst offences a shifter could commit. Everyone knew of Delia's calculating ways but this was low even for her. Everyone heard the door slam. Xavier was appalled. He could smell Delia in his room and on his sheets. He furiously threw the balcony door open to let fresh air take her odor way and gathered her clothes and the sheets off his bed. He had to get the offending materials out of his rooms. Opening the door to chuck them out he ran into Jessica an omega. "Alpha" she said bowing her head to hide her shock at running into him. "Hello Jessica" Xavier replied getting his temper under control. "May I take those for you?" "Yes, thank you" "I will bring you up some new sheets in a moment Alpha" Xavier paced in his doorway while he waited for Jessica to return. When she handed him the sheets he thanked her and went to remake his bed. Once he made the bed he took a deep breath. Checking the room for reassurance he settled back on the bed. Glad that Delia's nauseating odor was out of the room he closed his eye and drifted to sleep thinking about his mate. ------------- Jordan was in his arms again. Hands tangled in his shirt but this time he had her pinned against a wall. He pressed his lips to hers. He ran one of his hands down her neck and gently massaged her firm breast. Her breast filled his palm and her nipple puckered up in arousal. When his other hand ran underneath her shirt and brushed her stomach tenderly Jordan moaned allowing Xavier to run his tongue into her mouth. He stroked his tongue against hers enjoying the unique taste. Lifting her up he laid her across the bed stripping her off her shirt. He ran his tongue down her neck and over her speeding pulse, savoring her skin and enjoying the way Jordan writhed beneath him. The moans that came from the girl under him called to him on a primal level. Xavier ground his erection into Jordan's mound making her moan louder and expose even more of her throat to him. The scent of warm honey filled his senses calling to his wolf and making his canines elongate. He was about to sink his teeth into the point where her neck and shoulder met to claim her when a loud pounding distracted him. Opening his eyes Xavier groaned in disappointment, Jordan wasn't in his bed. The pounding came again and Derek barged into his room. "X, its 11:00. Why are you still in bed? I thought we had to make a stop before the meeting" Xavier shot up out of bed. "I'm coming. Get the cars we're driving separately. I will be down in time." Rushing, Xavier jumped into the shower. As the hot water cascaded over him his dreams came back to him. His morning erection throbbed almost painfully when he thought of her lithe body and her gentle moans. He needed to relieve his erection but he had to get to his mate. Getting out of the shower he dried his hair quickly and put on his suit. He exited his suite stopping by the kitchen where Mina shoved a plate of food into his hands. "Don't think I didn't notice you avoiding me yesterday. I still expect information." "Yes ma'am. Thanks for keeping everyone away from my room this morning." "Of course sweetie. You needed the rest." Mina returned to work and Xavier headed out to the car. Eva met him on the way out. "Zach is staying to help with the extra patrols. I'm going with you instead." "Sounds good. Hopefully, we will be able to cut back on patrols again soon." Handing his empty plate to an omega headed into the house Eva and Xavier met Tomas and Derek at the car where they waited. "So where are we headed?" Derek asked. "Church St. A shop called Small Treasures" "Isn't that one of those tourist traps that sells snow globes? Why are we going there?" Eva asked. "My mate works there. I promised her we would go to lunch but we have to go to this meeting first." "We get to meet the mate?" Eva exclaimed. "No! You will all stay in the car. Let's go!" Wisely his betas stayed quite as they snuck grins at each other. They divided in the two waiting SUVs. Tomas and Eva got in one while Derek and Xavier climbed into the other. The entire ride to the shop Xavier's leg shook nervously. He couldn't wait to see his mate. Before the car had made a complete stop he jumped out and almost ran into the shop. Not noticing his betas climbing out of the cars behind him. The alluring scent of his mate lingered in the air but when he didn't immediately see her Xavier nearly panicked. His wolf fought to break free and start a hunt when she strolled out of back room her bag over her shoulder. "You're early," Jordan smiled eying him appreciatively. "Is everything ok," she said noticing his distress. "What? Oh, yes I'm okay." He answered a little dazed. He was so relieved to see her he was momentarily speechless. "I'm sorry. Can we meet later today? I have a last minute meeting I can't miss but it should be over by 1:30. Will you go to a late lunch with me?" "Is your goon squad coming to lunch too?" she said waving out the window at his betas who were peering through the window shop like nosy kids. "Um, no. They are just going to the meeting with me," he answered glaring at his betas over his shoulder. "Sorry, they were supposed to stay in the car." Stealing My Heart Ch. 04 "No problem." Taking her hand Xavier led her out of the shop. "I should be done no later than 1:30." "Sounds good. I guess I will go back to the motel for now." "Aren't you going to introduce us Xavier?" Eva interrupted with a grin. "No," he answered gruffly. "Well, I guess I will introduce myself then" Jordan said leaving Xavier's astonished as she step around him. "I'm Jordan and I believe I saw you two the other day," she said holding out her hand to Derek. "I'm Derek. Don't go trying to steal my wallet now" he said feigning concern before surprising her with a swift hug that earned him a low growl from Xavier. "Well then you shouldn't make it so easy" Jordan held up his wallet twirling it between her fingers before handing it back to Derek who had an incredulous look on his face. "I'm Tomas and you have got to teach me how to do that," Tomas gushed almost bouncing with excitement. "Excuse them." Eva said pushing the others out of the way. "Sometimes they forget themselves. I'm Eva and it's nice to meet you. Xavier has said great things about you. " "Really? Like what?" Jordan asked curiously looking at Xavier. She was surprised with how easily this group seemed to except her but she had only been on one date with the man. How much could he have told them? "We have a meeting to get to," Xavier announced gently pulling Jordan back to him. Cupping her face in his giant hands he looked into her hazel eyes "I promise I will be back as soon as possible." Laying her hand over his Jordan sighed enjoying the simply touch. "Okay, I'll be waiting" "I've got a great idea" Eva said. "I'm not really needed at this meeting. Why don't I take Jordan and we can get to know each other better. Then we can meet you at the conference center when you are done." Xavier glared at Eva. He just knew she was up to no good but he knew Jordan would be safer with Eva than alone back at the motel. "That's kind of you. But I don't want to take you away from your business." "Nonsense, I'm only here for back up" Eva said waving her hands dismissively. "You are new to the city right?," Jordan nodded. "Well, I can show you around a little bit and tell you all about Xavier. It will be fun." "Um, I guess-" "Perfect," Eva said grabbing the keys from Tomas. "I guess I will see you in about an hour then." Xavier said pulling Jordan just a bit closer to brush his lip across her cheek. He considered a more passionate kiss but feared he wouldn't be able to let her go. "Guard her with your life!" Xavier sent silently to Eva as he approached his car. Settling into the SUV next to Jordan Eva turned to her excitedly, "I know you are going to lunch later but if you haven't gotten frozen lemonade from Mario's yet you just haven't lived!" ---------- Eva took Jordan on a quick drive around the city showing her the hot spots ending on Main Street. Main Street was peppered with all kinds of stores and was extremely busy at this time. Mario's was a sweets shop that was famous throughout the city for its frozen lemonade. After walking around a little they grabbed a lemonade and headed to the conference center. Sitting on a bench next to the entrance they continued to talk. "You were right. This is the best" Jordan said laughing. It was amazing how fast Jordan seemed to be bonding with people in this city starting with Henry, then Xavier, and now Eva. "I can show you all the best places to eat and where the best sales are. Stick with me." They were quite for a moment. "So, how do you feel about Xavier?" Eva asked quietly. "I don't know." Jordan responded hesitantly. "I mean, I like him a lot. But, everything has been moving so fast." "Trust me," Eva said taking Jordan's hand, "I've known Xavier my whole life and he is serious about you." "How can he? We've barely known each other a day and I can't even be sure how I feel. I've never had feelings like this before." "Sometimes you can't question your feelings. He's a good guy. Give him a chance." Eva smiled and squeezed Jordan's hand. "Alright. Besides, his smile is beautiful," Jordan said dreamily. "Smile?" Eva asked incredulously. "Xavier doesn't smile." "Of course he does!" "Well that just goes to prove how good you are for him." "I hope you're right." "I am. Besides, now I can share all of his dirty secrets with someone." Laughing, the woman continued to talk becoming friends as they waited. When the door burst open Jordan jumped. A man came strutting out of the building his brown eyes scanning the area and landing on the two women chatting on the bench. Chuck was second to Alpha Dean Terrance. "Well, hello Eva. Who's your friend?" he said openly scanning Jordan. Eva stood, crossing her arms. "She's . . . dating Xavier" Eva said hoping to make him back off. "Hello, it's nice to meet you," the man sneered staring at Jordan. Eva moved to stand in front of her. "She's not interested in meeting you" Eva snapped. Another two men came out of the building. "Chuck, stop flirting with Eva and let's go." "Yes, Alpha. I was just introducing myself to Cambridge's new girl." Terrance stopped to face the two women. "New girl?" Terrance asked his interest piqued. Eva stood defiantly in front of a very confused Jordan. She had a feeling something big was going on and Eva was purposefully keeping her in the dark. But sensing a somewhat malicious feeling coming from the small group she was happy to get the information at another time. When Xavier exited the building his wolf bristled. Eva stood protectively before her as Terrance and his betas glared. He didn't like the attention the other Alpha was giving his mate. He rushed over throwing his arm around Jordan protectively he pulled her into his side and sending a silent message to his betas to be on alert. "I guess we will see you later Terrance," he said "Until next time," Terrance answered darkly. He gave the couple one last look before leaving with his betas. Xavier had a bad feeling but for now his mate was safe in his arms. -------------- The feud between the Terrance and Cambridge packs had gone on for ages. While it wasn't clear what started the feud Terrance didn't have a problem perpetuating it. He hated Xavier Cambridge for embarrassing him in front of his father. When they were younger they had gotten into a fight but before their fathers could tear them apart Xavier had pinned him and nearly killed him. Dean's father never let him forget it. This was Dean's chance to get revenge. Back in his home Terrance paced angrily. His betas looked on anxiously wondering what their Alpha had in mind while the omegas did their best to go about their business without being noticed by their snarling leader. The Terrance pack hadn't always been such a dark place. When the former Alpha had led he had been strict and sometimes harsh but he had always made sure his pack was taken care of. When he had died there were rumors that Dean had murdered him but there was never any proof. As soon as his father was gone Dean gave up most pretenses of caring for his pack. He threatened them into submission and used their loved ones to keep them quiet. He let his betas terrorize the omegas making their lives hell. "How could Xavier have found his mate before me!" Terrance thought furiously. Not that Terrance wanted a mate. He found most females to be useless except for using them for taking his pleasure. But the idea that Xavier might be happy grated on him. Turning to his betas his snapped, "Where is Simon?" "I'm here Terrance. What do you want" the shifter stepped out of the dark corner he had been leaning in. "Don't be arrogant with me," Terrance warned. "I could still kill you." Simon was the leader of the small pack of rogue wolves that had come to the area. Simon and his group had been in the middle of attacking one of Terrance's omegas in the forest when they had been caught and brought back to Terrance. "Yea but you need me," Simon said coolly. It was true. None of the Alphas knew of Simon's group making it easier for Terrance to take his revenge without being caught. He used them to scout Cambridge and Carson lands without drawing attention to the Terrance pack. And as of now it was working. The other Alphas were convinced that the rogues were on their own. But Terrance had plans. He was going to take the Cambridge lands if it was that last thing he did. "I have another assignment for your team" "What might that be?" "The Cambridge Alpha might have found his mate. She's a human named Jordan. I want you to find her and watch her," "Just watch. There are some many delicious things I could do to a bitch" he growled licking his lips, "and you just want us to watch her?" Terrance whirled on Simon grabbing him by the throat eyes blazing, "You will do as I say! I have plans and you will not ruin them" Terrance viciously shook Simon before throwing him to the ground. His muscles bunching in fury Terrance turned and smashed his fist into the wall behind him barely missing the omega standing there. The omega squeaked in fright before sliding down to the floor, plaster sprinkling down on him as the betas laughed. Simon stood doing his best to look unfazed when Terrance turned back on him. "How am I supposed to find the human anyway?" "Watch their Alpha. He will lead you to her. I'm sure of it" Terrance growled. Simon nodded and strolled out of the hall. He hated this Alpha but he promised him a place of power when the job was complete instead of killing him when they got caught on his lands. Simon had already lost one of his wolves to the Cambridge pack and he was not happy about it. He would play along for now. Signaling to two of his men Marco and Case they came running to join him. "We have a job. Let's go!" Without a word the two followed their leader. Terrance continued his pacing. "Soon," he mumbled to himself with and evil grin. "Soon, I will have my land and tear Xavier's throat out as he begs in the dirt!" "A . . . Alpha," a trembling voice called from the floor where he had left him covered in bits of wall plaster. "What," "There . . . there is a woman in the foyer w . . .wishing to speak with you. She says she's from the Cambridge pack. Glaring at the shaking omega Terrance stormed out into the foyer. In the foyer was a leggy blonde. She wore a short red dress with black pumps. The flimsy material clung to her curves. She was dressed to kill. Terrance and his betas stopped and gazed in awe of the tempting woman before them. Her icy blue eyes trailed over the betas and stopped on Terrance. Slowly, swaying her hips, she sauntered up to Terrance. Stopping in front of him she brushed her long golden hair back to reveal her ample cleavage and her long neck. She reveled in the power she held over these men. "Now you are an Alpha" she whispered to Terrance making him puff out his chest with pride. "What can I do for you" he leered openly staring down her dress. "My name is Delia and I was hoping there was something I could do for you." Delia licked her lips drawing Terrance's eyes to her red mouth and running her hands up his arms to encircle his neck. Pressing her body to his she was thrilled when she felt Terrance's erection throbbing against her. She didn't know why she hadn't tried this before. Terrance would be easier than Xavier. "I'm sure you can," Terrance smirked pulling her closer. _______ Stealing My Heart Ch. 05 A/N:Sorry it took so long. I'm in the middle of a job/apartment search. I hope you enjoy it and thanks for all your comments and support! ------------ The meeting had been completely useless. The four Alphas argued nonstop. Carson suggested putting a team together to look for the rogues but Terrance was in an uproar over having wolves from other packs on his land. Michaels, who had yet, to have a visit from the rogues was reluctant to get involved. After an hour Terrance and his betas stormed out as usual. Without Terrance the three remaining Alphas decided to keep each other notified and retired for the day. On his way out Xavier's wolf began to bristle. Something was wrong but it wasn't until he exited the building that he saw the problem. Eva stood before his mate shielding her from Terrance and his men. Rushing to her, Xavier wrapped his arm around her and pulled her into him. "Watch them!" he signaled to Derek and Tomas as they fanned out behind the other pack. "I guess we will see you later Terrance," he said coldly. "Until next time," Terrance answered darkly. Terrance left taking his men with them. It wasn't until they had turned on to another street that he loosened his grip. "Did I miss something?" Jordan asked looking up at Xavier curiously. "They are just business associates." "Sure," Jordan said with an eyebrow raised in disbelief. "It's nothing really. We just don't exactly see eye to eye. But we can't always choose who we work with." "Okay," Jordan said letting the issue drop for now. "Well, Eva and I had a marvelous time together," she smiled over at Eva who had visibly relaxed. "That's . . .good" Xavier said hesitantly looking at the two women. He couldn't believe he had just found his mate and he was already losing her to his other friends. "Are you ready for lunch?" "Yea let's go." Xavier's heart skipped a beat when he saw Jordan's bright smile. Turning to face his betas Jordan waved. "It was nice to meet all of you." "Of course," Derek said grinning and making a sweeping bow. Tomas punched Derek playfully. "The pleasure was all ours. Don't forget you have to teach me how to pick pockets." "No problem" "I'm glad we got to know each other. By the way, Friday we are having a barbeque. You should come!" "What are you doing?" Xavier asked Eva silently through their pack bond. "Just making sure she sticks around. I like her. We can't have you scaring her off." Eva sent back innocently. "That sounds fun." "Good Xavier will give you the details. You two have wonderful lunch." Xavier heaved a sigh of relief when he was in the car next to Jordan. He looked over at her as she settled in putting on her seatbelt. He couldn't get over how beautiful she was. He still couldn't believe the goddess Luna gave him such an incredible mate. "You are so beautiful," he whispered. "You look pretty fine yourself," she smiled checking him out. "Now where are we going to eat?" "I have a place in mind." Xavier and Jordan went out every day that week. Xavier put off work and spent every waking hour as close his mate as possible watching from the shadows. When she was working he watched her through the window from a distance. When she was on break he followed her to the table at the café where she had eaten that first day. Jordan had no idea just how close Xavier was but she couldn't get over the sense that she felt safer every moment in this city than she had anywhere else in her life. Her mind tried to tell her that this wasn't normal, that something was wrong. But Jordan had found that it was getting easier to close off those negative thoughts. In the evening Xavier picked her up after work and they would spend hours talking, laughing, and eating. Xavier learned just how much Jordan loved food. He loved that way she would close her eyes and hum in delight when she tasted something particularly delicious. Jordan found that Xavier was very well connected in this city. Everywhere they went it seemed people knew him. Though they kept their distance she didn't miss the slight bows and acknowledgments that passed between Xavier and the various strangers. Jordan found herself longing to be with him and loving every moment spent in his presence. Every evening became a private ritual for the couple. As their evenings drew to a close Xavier could her Jordan's breath hitch nervously. Xavier would walk Jordan to her door and pull her close. He would take his time breathing in her scent and enjoying the feel of their bodies pressed together. Once he had gotten his fill of her scent Xavier would kiss her gently. With each passing evening Jordan relaxed into his embrace just a little bit more. When he was able to let her go he would unlock the door as he had that first night, warn her to lock her door, giver her one last kiss, and wish her a good night. Xavier's wolf furiously tried to push Xavier to stay and finally lay claim to his mate but he wrestled to keep firm command. But Thursday night something was different. Jordan seemed quieter than usual. When they came to a stop in front of her door at the end of their evening Xavier just couldn't take it anymore. "Is something bothering you?" He asked holding her hands in his. He softly rubbed his thumbs over her hands trying to keep them warm in the unseasonably chilly night. Guiding her to the steps they took a seat. He could hear her heart beating erratically and began to worry. Suddenly Jordan ripped her hands away from his, wrapped them around his neck, and crushed her lips to his. Xavier was stunned and froze for a moment. She had begun to pull away when his wolf practically yelled "Kiss her you idiot!" Jordan was worried when Xavier didn't kiss her back. Maybe she shouldn't have attacked him like that. But when she felt his warm lips begin to move against hers she relaxed a little bit. The kiss became more passionate as Jordan found her hands twisted in his long, silky, hair. A pleasant shock ran through her when Xavier began to gently nibble at her lower lip until she opened her mouth and felt his tongue dance against hers. He tasted better than she could have ever imagined and she moaned lost in desire. Without breaking their kiss Xavier pulled Jordan over so that she straddled his lap. His arms enveloped her blocking out the breeze as his lips started to travel down her neck. Pleasure and longing was all that filled Jordan's mind. Even the small voice in her head that usually warned her of dangers seemed to disappear with every second Jordan spent locked in Xavier's heated embrace. Xavier couldn't deny his erection when he heard Jordan's breathy moan. And when he began to kiss her neck she threw her hair back offering him her throat and unconsciously began slowly writhing on his lap. His wolf shook with excitement at her unknown submission to him as Xavier alternated between licking and kissing her bare throat. One of his hands found the hem of her shirt and began stroking the warm flesh of her back. He pulled her closer as she groaned and the scent of her arousal filled the stairwell. She continued to grind her covered mound across his raging erection and pulling his hair while he nipped at her collarbone. "Get a room!" a woman yelled as she ran down the stairs next them. Jordan jumped off Xavier's lap her neck and cheeks slowly turning a rosy pink and making Xavier growl softly. Returning to her room she focused on pulling her keys out and unlocking the door as she tried to calm herself. "Well, that was nice," Xavier grinned using the moment her back was turned to cover the significant bulge in his pants. After a few tries she finally got the door open and turned looking into Xavier's emerald orbs. "I didn't mean to jump you like that," Jordan confessed, "but I wanted to be the one to kiss you tonight," she said grinning up at him. "Feel free to jump me anytime," Xavier grinned back. "I'll keep that in mind," Jordan said as she stepped into her room. Xavier peeked in the room as usual to check for threats and seeing it was clear he pulled her close again. "Didn't we already do this part," Jordan asked cheekily. "No. You kissed me. Now I want to kiss you," Xavier whispered as his lips descended on hers. It was gently kiss but they could both feel the passion running through it. Jordan sighed as their lips separated and rested her head on Xavier's chest listening to his strong heartbeat while Xavier scented her hair. She couldn't believe how attached she had become to him. "Remember I'm picking you up here at 4:00 for the barbeque tomorrow. And don't forget to lock the door," Xavier warned when she let him go. "Sleep well Kitten," he added as he backed out of the room closing the door softly. Xavier leaned his head against Jordan's door for a moment listening to her shuffling around inside before returning to his car. He couldn't stay to watch over her tonight, he had to return to the compound and try to get some work done. It would probably take him most of the night to put a dent in all the work he had been putting off but he had a feeling after tonight's date with Jordan he wouldn't be able to sleep much anyway. His wolf howled desperately within his mind with every step he took away from his mate. Xavier couldn't wait for the day when he wouldn't have to leave her. ----------------- Jordan paced in her room. She had been thinking about kissing him all day. Even Henry had noticed how distracted she was around the shop. She still couldn't believe she had attacked Xavier like that but she was glad she did. The feelings she had for Xavier seemed to bloom over night. She had very few close relationships with anyone in her life. Experience had taught her it was better to be alone than risk being hurt. The closer you allowed someone the more pain it brought when they ultimately betrayed you. But despite everything Jordan desperately wanted to be close to Xavier and to prove it to herself she had kissed him with all the passion she could muster. That kiss had made her feel alive. Energy surged through her. She couldn't sleep or settle down. The alarm clock flashed 10:30 when Jordan decided she couldn't stay in her room any longer. She felt confined and needed some fresh air. Wrapping herself in a light sweater she went for a walk. ______ "I'm going to go crazy just sitting here. What's the deal with this girl anyway?" Case whined. "Terrance wants us to watch her so that's what we are going to do," Simon spat. He didn't like this assignment either but he knew it was only a matter of time before he got what he wanted. "Since when do we follow orders?" Marco grumbled before being slammed to the ground, Simon glaring menacingly above him. "Don't question me!" he growled viciously. "We do this and if I hear one more complaint, out of either of you, I will tear your throats out." They had been watching the girl for days and even Simon was losing his patience. Simon stood and watched as the Cambridge Alpha left the girl's motel room. "I don't think she is going anywhere. Stay and watch her. If she hasn't gone anywhere by 11:00 you can return to the compound," Simon stalked off leaving Case and Marco behind. "Good job pissing of the boss Marco. Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Case laughed. "It's this girl," he scowled. "She thinks she can walk around without payback," he mumbled "but I'll show her. She's going to get what's coming to her." Case gave Marco a questioning glance as he continued to mutter about revenge and being done wrong. The crazed look that seemed to take over his face was beginning to worry Case. He couldn't figure out what he was talking about. "Marco? You ok?" he asked getting ready jump out of the way if he exploded. Marco was known for his short temper and he wasn't about to get hurt because some girl bothered him. "Thinks she can hit me and get away with it ..." Marco continued to mumble. Finally catching on to what Marco was going on about Case began to chuckle. "Are you telling me, that tiny thing gave you that bloody nose earlier this week?" his chuckles turned into full on laughter when he caught Marco's red face. Marco hadn't told anyone exactly how he came to have that bloody nose and now he knew why. Case couldn't stop the laughter as his body shook and tears poured down his face. "You got beat up by a girl not even half your size?" he laughed gasping for air. "Shut up!" Marco yelled embarrassment and anger quickly turning his face purple with rage. Balling his fists Marco was about to beat Case's face in when he noticed the girl had left her room and was half way up the street. "Get up you fool she's leaving," he shrieked kicking Case sharply in the ribs before following the girl down the dark street. Few people were on the street at this hour but the ones that were hurried away when they saw the angry man stalking towards them. Case, sobering from his bout of laughter, rushed to keep up. He could hear the rumbling of Marco's wolf. Marco never had great control and Case could sense his wolf ready to burst out on the public street. "Marco, calm down. Come back here!" he whispered as the distance between them became wider. By the time Marco caught up with the girl the street was deserted. Grinning wickedly he shoved her into an adjacent alley. -------------- The chilly air washed over Jordan seeping into her light sweater to cool her heated skin. It took a while but the walk eventually calmed her racing heart. Looking around her Jordan took in the empty street. She hadn't been paying attention when she left her motel room. The vigilance she usually had at all times had waivered while she wandered but as she began to feel herself again she sensed the tension in the air. The hairs on the back of neck stood up as a feeling of intense dread consumed her. Turning to head back she was hit with great force propelling her into an alley. Jordan landed flat on her back, the air forced out of her lungs. Getting to her hands and knees Jordan thought quickly, self preservation kicking in. Lunging she grabbed a broken piece of ply wood lying a foot away. Splinters dug into her hands as she turned and swung with all her might. An enraged howl echoed through the alley. Jumping to her feet Jordan turned clutching her weapon ready to fight for all she was worth. Fear coursed through her but she refused to let it overtake her. The fuming man blocking her exit looked familiar. As he recovered from the blow to his side his face screwed up in pain and anger, "You bitch!" he screamed, "I'm going to kill you." "Marco?" Jordan asked bewildered. The threat had brought back the memory of the cruel blonde in the shop. "You thought I would forget about you? You thought you were safe? Your boyfriend can't save you now even if he is a shifter," he growled. Jordan was confused by his words but she was immediately distracted as Marco's face began to distort. Marco began to shake as his body seemed to grow tearing his clothes to shreds. A scream stuck in Jordan's throat her eyes widened in terror. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Marco was transforming right before her eyes but her brain just didn't want to accept it. Dirty blonde fur sprouted out of his exposed skin as his face took on a more wolf like structure. In a matter of seconds a frightening creature stood before Jordan and before she could completely register the change it had thrown her back to ground causing her to drop her makeshift weapon. The creature stood over her with dingy blonde fur, a long snout with yellowing teeth, and sharp claws, yet it stood on two legs. Fear gripped her as its claws tore into her. Struggling, Jordan did her best to push the creature away but the thing was too strong. Saliva leaked out of his mouth leaving wet spots on Jordan's sweater. It roared viciously as it tore her clothes and skin and fought to grab her flailing limbs. The creature threw its head back howling in pain when Jordan managed to kick its furry shin. Quickly, while it was distracted, Jordan looked around for her discarded weapon just as a second creature came hurdling into the alley. "Marco let her go!" Case growled as he entered the alley. Sprouting dark fur, his bones started to rearrange themselves under his skin as Case took his hybrid form as well. Simon was not going to like this. "Marco come on man." Running full speed into Marco's hybrid, Case managed to dislodge him from the terrified girl. "She's mine!" he growled his voice slightly distorted. "Not now! Simon wants her alive! Do you know what he will do to you if you disobey him?" Case pinned him fighting to the alley wall. The reminder of their leader cooled Marco down a bit though he still pushed to grab the shocked girl behind Case. Jordan gawked at the two animals wrestling in front of her. Terror froze her in place her fingers gripping the wooden board tightly. Her mind screamed at her to run but something kept her where she sat on the cold concrete. "What are you?" she asked drawing the attention of the animals. "We are shifters," the creature pinned against the wall spat over the other's shoulder. "We are the monsters you thought only lived in your nightmares girlie. Just like your boyfriend." "What?" Jordan said confused. "You think you are safe with your boyfriend walking through the city and making out in stairwells. You don't even know what he is! He's a monster just like us." "Shut up Marco!" Case yelled "Not before I have my revenge!" Marco still fought to get at the girl who thought she could defend herself with a piece of plywood. "Do you want to be the one to explain this to Simon?" Calming slightly Marco took a few deep breathes. "Remember one day I will get you girlie. That is if your sweetheart doesn't tear your throat out first," he laughed showing off his sharp teeth before the two creatures shifted completely into their wolf forms and ran out of the alley. Jordan sat still on the cold, damp concrete, the wooden board clutched in her shaking hands. The sound of scurrying rats brought her to her feet and fleeing back up the street to her motel room. She missed the curious stares of the people she passed in the street in her disheveled state. Making it to her room she slammed the door and locked it. It wasn't until she barricaded herself in the bathroom that she allowed herself to catch her breath. "Monsters," she thought. She hadn't believed in monsters since she was a child, at least not the nonhuman kind. And now . . . She didn't know what to think. She knew what she had seen and she knew that she could trust her instincts. Looking in the mirror she finally took in her sullied appearance. Her shirt was shredded, barely held together at one shoulder, she had completely lost her sweater somewhere, and her pants were torn, covered in dirt and filth from the alley. Blood trickled out of the ragged claw marks that were thankfully rather shallow. Her arms and face were covered in bruises from where the creature had struck her. As she stared she became aware of all the aches and pains. After pulling out the sharp splinters from her fingers and palms she carefully peeled back her shirt and began cleaning and bandaging the wounds. By the time she had cleaned herself up she was convinced she wasn't crazy. She had gone over it a million times and the one thing she knew for certain was that she could trust her instincts. For as long as she could remember her instincts had kept her alive, she wasn't going to doubt them now. Taking a deep breath, "Werewolves," she said aloud. "I saw werewolves." She started to giggle, it sounded so silly. Her giggles turned into loud bursts of laughter before becoming full body sobs. She was freaking out as the horror of the experience played through her mind over and over. Remembering the cruel claws, the foul breath, and the two creatures locked in their furry brawl made her shudder. Xavier came to her mind and suddenly she wished he were there. She just knew that if he were with her everything would be okay. She didn't care that they had said Xavier was one of them. Stealing My Heart Ch. 05 The werewolf she knew as Marco had told her they had seen her kissing Xavier in the stairwell so she knew they were watching her. And although she longed to run out and use the pay phone to call Xavier she couldn't make herself go out into the inky darkness once again. How many of them were still out there? Jordan was not easily shaken and part of her was furious at herself for letting the fear take over. But another part reminded her it wasn't everyday you learned werewolves were after you. Clutching the business card Xavier had given her with his personal number scrawled across the back Jordan paced before her window. She had drawn the curtains so that a sliver of moonlight was allowed in the room. She didn't want anyone to be able to look in on her but she wanted to know the moment the sun came up. She had tried to settle down and sleep but the aches and pains of her wounds coupled with the frightening images appearing when she closed her eyes prevented her from even a slight doze. So Jordan paced, the minutes rolling by slowly on the cheap alarm clock. When the morning sun's warm rays finally touched her window Jordan threw back the curtains searching for any possible threats lingering in the daylight. Seeing none she took a deep breath, eased the door open, and sprinted across the empty space to the vandalized payphone. Her heart beat raced as she continued to scan the parking lot, listening to the phone ring. "Hello?" the familiar yet groggy voice seemed to have an immediate calming effect on her. Just hearing him made some of the fear dissipate. "Xavier?" she couldn't help the shaking in her voice. The voice on the other line was suddenly alert. "Jordan? Kitten what's wrong?" "Xavier, I need you," she said her voice so thick with tears she could barely get out another word. "Please," she pleaded quietly hating the weakness in her voice. "I'm on my way. Don't worry Sweetheart. I'll be there," the promise gave her courage. "Thank you," she whispered before she hung up and hurried back to her room. ------------- The vibrations of his phone shook Xavier out of his doze. After leaving Jordan he had returned to finish the work Eva had neatly arranged for him on his desk. The first few hours were torture his thoughts continued to stray to Jordan and the kisses they had shared. His wolf ran wild in his mind replaying the feel of her writhing body against his and the sweet scent of her arousal. His wolf was trying to punish him for leaving his mate after her obvious submission. When his wolf began inventing new erotic fantasies starring Jordan, Xavier growled in frustration and mentally wrestled with his wolf until we lay down in the back of his mind. It took another hour but he was finally able to get some work done. Xavier was nearly done when he had dozed off, his head resting on the desk. The call from Jordan brought fear to his heart. He could hear the shaking in her voice and his wolf sensed fear from their mate. Jumping up he pulled on some clothes and rushed out the door. Ignoring the stares of the few people awake at this hour he rushed to the car and sped away. Getting to his mate consumed him. He barely paid attention to the few cars on the road and nearly ran over a few pedestrians in the parking lot. Double parking, Xavier took the stairs two at a time. Taking a moment to catch his breath he softly knocked on the door trying not to startle his mate. "Jordan? Jordan it's Xavier," he called anxiously. He was surprised when the door flew open and his mate flew into his arms. He could feel the trembles sliding through her small frame as he lifted her up and stormed into her room slamming the door behind him. Taking a seat on the edge of the bed Xavier held his mate close. Anguish and fury clashed with deep feelings of relief. His mate was safe in his embrace, alive but terrified. He had no idea what happened to her but he had briefly seen her bruises and bandages before she had catapulted into him. He never should have left her he seethed. Something bad had happened his irate wolf could feel it and he was furious that he wasn't there to protect her. Holding her close as she shook Xavier began to scent his mate. Her lovely scent, though contaminated by fear, comforted him and his wolf while also assuring there was no serious damage. Mingled in with her scent was the faint smell of another shifter sending an angry rumble through his chest. Another shifter dared touch his mate? Xavier vowed to find him and make him suffer but first he needed to tend to his mate. He wouldn't be leaving her unprotected ever again. Xavier rubbed her back soothingly as the trembling faded away. Looking up into his beautiful worried eyes Jordan blushed and began to disentangle herself from Xavier's strong embrace. "I'm sorry," she mumbled embarrassment causing her to look away from his troubled gaze. "I'm not usually like this. I don't usually throw myself at men. And after last night I don't even know what you must think of me," standing Jordan wrapped her arms around herself missing the comfort and warmth of Xavier's arms. Reaching for her Xavier pulled her close gently examining the wounds that covered her upper body. Bandages were taped over her arms and peeked out from under shirt. Bruises marked her once unblemished skin. Sorrow coursed through Xavier, furrowing his brow. How could he have let this happen? "What happened?" he whispered. "Who did this to you?" Jordan was touched by the grief in his voice and all she wanted to do was comfort the man before her. She couldn't believe that he would be so distraught over her. No one had ever cared that much. "It's okay. I'm okay" she murmured, stroking his cheek softly. Turning his head Xavier kissed her hand then drawing her in he placed a soft kiss on her waiting lips. Closing his eyes he laid his head on her chest drawing comfort from the sound of her steady heartbeat. Jordan wove her fingers through his silky hair enjoying the simple intimacy "I shouldn't have left you. I should have been there to protect you. I will never let this happen to you again. I'm so sorry," he whispered. Xavier's eyes snapped open when Jordan's body began to shake followed by the sound of her laughter. Xavier stared at her dumbfounded as his wounded mate laughed incessantly wiping tears from her eyes. "What's so funny?," he asked incredulously. Maybe she was still in shock. "Well here I am, practically mauled by a werewolf and wanting to kiss another one. I mean, less than 12 hours ago I didn't even believe in werewolves and now I find one wants to kill me and the other is a fiercely protective softy. It's like I stepped into a fantasy!" Jordan's chuckles only increased as she took in Xavier's astonished expression. "How did you know I was a werewolf?" Xavier asked. "Marco, the guy that attacked me, said you were. Is it true?" "Yes! But doesn't that freak you out?" he added tentatively holding his breath as he waited for her response. Stepping between his legs she ran her fingers lovingly through his hair and down his intense face. "He said you were a shifter and a monster. While I just learned that werewolves in fact do exist, I've always known there were monsters in this world," she said looking in his emerald eyes. "You're not a monster Xavier. I know that. So why should I be afraid of you?" Her response nearly made him choke on the breath he was holding. Could she really be so calm? He sensed no fear from his amazing mate. She just accepted him even though his kind had tried to kill her. The Goddess had given him a mate with more strength than anyone he had ever met and he would do everything he could to protect her. Drawing her down beside him he held her seemingly fragile hands in his. "Tell me what happened." Jordan took a deep breath and went through the events that led them to that moment. "I was so scared," she said finishing the story. "But when you were holding me everything just felt . . . better. Like I didn't need to worry as long as you were with me," she smiled. "Are you sure you're okay," Xavier asked through a clenched jaw for the hundredth time. He was fighting not to go after the wolf Marco and kicking himself for not sensing Marco was a shifter in the shop. "I fine!" Jordan sighed slightly annoyed. Pulling her hands out of Xavier's tight grip and looking at him straight in the eye. "Really, I'm okay now. I have a lot of questions for you though and I'm kinda hungry actually," she added with a shrug. "You're always hungry," Xavier grinned back sheepishly. He knew is mate was resilient he just couldn't help the ever present worry. "It's still pretty early, but I'm sure we can find a café open somewhere. Let's go get you some food then I will answer all of your questions," he said getting to his feet and dragging Jordan up with him. Leaving the motel room Xavier led Jordan to the car. He saw her raised eyebrow when she observed his SUV double parked and barely pulled all the way up. "I was worried," he exclaimed helping her into the car. Before he could close the door Jordan grabbed his hand. "Thank you," she professed sincerely. "No one has ever been there for me like this and I . . ." Xavier cut her off with a soft kiss. "Anytime," he said before closing her door and running around the vehicle. They drove around the city looking for an open café and came to Annie's Diner where they had their first date. The blinking OPEN sign called to them. The 24-hour diner had a few customers stopping by for their morning coffee but all the booths were empty. Taking a seat at the same table Jordan was bouncing with excitement. The sole waitress came to take their order eyeing Xavier but the couple was too wrapped up to notice her flirtatious attempts. When she walked away with their orders Jordan was about to burst. "I don't even know what to ask first," she gushed. "Well how about I just tell you," he beamed at her excitement. "Sounds good," "OK. I was born a werewolf. Everyone in my family is a shifter. The community I live in that I told you about is made up of all wolf shifters, including my friends that you met earlier this week." "You mean Eva, Tomas, and Derek? They're all shifters?" she asked in amazement. "Yes. And I am the Alpha," he said. "It's like the leader. I am in charge of making decisions and protecting the pack," he clarified at Jordan's silent question. "How many shifters are there?" "In my pack there are about 200. But there are 3 other smaller packs in this area with 150 for fewer. The city is our neutral ground." Xavier continued to talk telling Jordan about the things he couldn't share with her before. It still amazed him how easily she accepted everything. He told her about his pack members and what it was like being a wolf and Jordan's attention never wavered. Even when the food came her pancakes stayed mostly untouched as she listened intently and asked questions. The 8 am breakfast rush had just begun when Xavier looked up and noticed they weren't alone in the diner anymore. Glancing back at Jordan he caught her trying to stifle a giant yawn. Leaving cash on the table he beckoned for Jordan to follow him out of the diner. He took her arm as she stumbled along, exhaustion finally taking hold. They sat silently in the car on the way back to her motel room. Xavier watched Jordan adoringly. "So do you have any other questions?" "The men outside the conference center, were they shifters?" Jordan asked thoughtfully. Xavier looked at her in surprise. "Yes. How did you know that?" "I knew something was going on that I didn't quite understand," she answered. "Why were you so upset?" "That was Terrance and his betas," he said gruffly pulling up to the motel. He waited until they were walking back to the room to continue his explanation. "Terrance is Alpha of one of the other packs. We were having a meeting about some recent problems. He's bad news. I didn't want him around my mate," he said following her into the room. "Your mate? You mean Eva?" "No, I mean you," he replied gathering her into his arms. "You are my mate Jordan," he said looking into her warm hazel eyes and letting her delicious scent soothe him. "What does that mean?" she asked cuddling into his warmth. Sitting her on the bed he knelt before her and tried to calm his nerves. It was one thing to accept him as a werewolf. Could she accept him as her lifelong mate? Would she feel the mating pull enough to want to join him as a shifter and be his queen? "Our goddess creates a mate for every shifter. A mate is someone who completes their soul and will love them unconditionally. Every shifter has one person in the world who is their perfect mate" "Like a soul mate?" Jordan asked skeptically. "Yes, but it's so much more than that. For a shifter our families and our pack mean everything to us. We would literally die for our pack members if necessary. But we live to love and protect our mates. Without our mates we might as well die. From the time we are old enough to understand we search for our mates and when a shifter loses their mate the pain is usually too much for them to handle and they die shortly after. From the moment I saw you Jordan, I knew you were my mate and I fell in love with you. " Jordan stood and paced the small room. She wanted to believe everything she was hearing. The idea of a mate seemed more fantastical than the idea of werewolves. Jordan had never been truly loved before, not by a parent or friend. What she thought was love had always been deceit. Now standing here, this werewolf was promising her everything she had every wanted. Her heart told her to give in and let him love her while her brain told her it couldn't possibly be true. Nothing is as good as it seems. "How can you be so sure? How do you know I'm your mate?" Xavier stood looking directly in her eyes. "My human half desires you. I want and need you with every fiber of my being. But wolf can sense you. While I may have been attracted to other women before I met you my wolf has only ever wanted you. You will be the only woman for us for the rest of my life." It sounded so wonderful to Jordan. "Can I see your wolf?" "Of course. He has been waiting to meet you all week. Although you might want to get on the bed, there isn't much space in here." While Jordan arranged herself on the bed Xavier began removing his clothes. He strongly reminded his wolf that this was not the time to claim their mate as he began to wriggle and salivate with anticipation. Jordan blushed when Xavier stood before her naked but remained silent when she remembered Marco's shredding clothes. She couldn't help licking her lips when she saw his warm tan skin and firm muscles. His wide pectorals led her eyes deliciously down over his taut abs and strong thighs her arousal evident in her dampening panties. When she saw his large cock her eyes shot back up to his face in embarrassment. "So are you going to shift or was this just supposed to be a strip tease?" she snapped mortified by his knowing smirk. Xavier began to shift. The change occurred slowly and held a grace and power that was absent from her previous experience. The shift seemed to flow naturally through his body until a large wolf stood before the bed. Xavier could see the shock on Jordan's face. Thinking he scared her he sat down, lifted his massive front paws onto the edge of the bed and laid his head down on them. Jordan was amazed, he was a glorious wolf, regal even in this nonthreatening pose. He coal black fur seemed to shine while his eyes gazed at her. Those green eyes unmistakably belonged to Xavier. Carefully, Jordan crawled to the waiting wolf holding out her hand. When his long tongue snaked out and licked her she laughed making the wolf's tail wag as he jumped up on the bed beside her. Jordan couldn't stop the grin that was plastered on her face. She was right. Xavier was not a monster. Wrapping her arms around the wolf she buried her face in his soft fur and stoked him in adoration earning a happy rumble. In that moment Jordan squashed any negative thoughts about Xavier. She couldn't put her finger on it but she knew this was right. She would be his mate. The girl and wolf sat nuzzling each other affectionately. Xavier delighted in Jordan's embrace. He and his wolf could feel the happiness flowing through her. When her breathing slowed and her arms slackened he realized just how tired she must be. Shifting back to his human form he laid her down softly and climbed off the bed. A whimper caught his attention as he pulled on his pants. "Don't leave me," she mumbled reaching for him sleepily. Rounding the bed he brushed her wild hair back and kissed her lips. "I just need to make a phone call. Then I promise I will come back to you." Jordan nodded as Xavier caressed her cheek. Grabbing his phone he stepped outside. Derek was relieved to hear his voice the omegas that had seen Xavier's departure had him worried that something was wrong. And when Xavier hadn't picked up his phone Derek and felt a small panic. Assuring him everything was just fine now Xavier filled him in on the details and swore they would both be at the barbeque that evening. Derek congratulated him before hanging up and going to inform Eva about the news. "You're back," Jordan mumbled almost incoherently as Xavier got into bed beside her. "I promised I would, didn't I?" "Yea. I love you mate," Jordan said sleepily. Xavier's heart soared at her words, his wolf howling happily with her acceptance. Wrapping in his arms Xavier pulled the blanket over them. "I love you too," he whispered in her ear before cuddling close to her. Closing his eyes they both finally got the rest they needed. Jordan could hear them moving around the small space as she came awake. Her senses didn't detect danger but she had learned you could never be to careful. Waiting till the intruder had entered the bathroom Jordan reached for the knife she kept under her pillow. "Good you're awake," Jordan jumped off the bed whirling around to face her attacker. She hadn't even heard him leave the bathroom. "Whoa Kitten. It's just me. Put your claws away," it took her a few moments to recognize the man standing before her, hands raised in reassurance. "Xavier," she whispered sitting back on the bed to recover from her sudden adrenaline rush. Closing her eyes her memories rushed back making her dizzy. When she opened them again she jumped raising the knife again. Xavier knelt before her. She hadn't heard him move again. "Damn, don't do that!" "Sorry baby," Xavier said plucking the knife out of her hand and laying it on the nightstand. "I didn't mean to frighten you." Jordan just stared wide eyed at him. "Kitten, are you okay?" A small smile lit her face. "Yeah," she answered softly as she reached out to lightly stroke his whiskered cheek and full lips. "I thought I dreamed you." "Don't worry I'm very real." "Prove it," Jordan challenged. A wide grin spread across Xavier's face. "Gladly." Standing up Xavier swept his tiny mate up and laid her down on the bed before climbing up and settling between her thighs. Jordan gasped as her mate's hard, muscular body pressed against her soft curves. His eyes darkened in passion as he gazed down at her. When he began to nuzzle her neck a shiver of excitement wracked her body. The scrape of his whiskers and the feel of his warm breath pulled a surprised moan from her lips. She couldn't believe this was happening. Nothing had ever felt as good as this affectionate touch. But as soon as his lips and tongue brushed hot and wet against her pulse all thought fled. Xavier licked and nibbled his way across the smooth skin of Jordan's neck. Every hitch in her breath had his wolf shaking in pleasure. When he finally took her mouth, sliding his tongue past her soft lips Jordan wrapped her legs around his hips and snaked her fingers through his hair. Xavier's wolf howled in ecstasy while his human fought the pleasure coursing through his body threatening to unman him. It had been so long since he'd even held a woman it was all he could do to not rip off their clothes and take her hard and fast. Xavier snuck his hands into Jordan's shirt, he desperately needed to feel her warm skin against his. Shock doused his arousal as his hands brushed against the bandages under her top. Jordan whimpered as Xavier pulled away from her. She tried to bring him back down for more kisses but he continued to withdraw. She was about to question him but the intense anguish and fury in his eyes took her breath away. Gently Xavier removed her shirt, before carefully peeling away the bandages covering her stomach and arms. When his fingers found the last bandage on her hip he began to remove it causing her to freeze. The slight odor of fear made Xavier glance up into his mate's hazel eyes. He could sense the struggle going on within her. "I won't hurt you," he reassured her cupping her cheek in his large hand. "Let me check your wounds." Fear warred with her instincts. They told her she had nothing to fear. Xavier would never hurt her but past experiences made her cringe, dread swirling in the pit of her stomach. The comfort of Xavier's touch and the sincere emotion in his eyes called to the part of her that longed for him yet was afraid to trust. Trust is for suckers, her mind told her. He'll leave you like everyone else. She was about to pull away when the memory of the look on his face when she had opened the door flashed before her eyes. Ignoring the part or her that called her all kinds of stupid, Jordan gathered her courage and nodded her acceptance. Xavier gave her a small smile before removing her jeans and the remaining bandage. Xavier couldn't breathe. His mate lay before him wearing only a pale pink bra and panty set. Her long brown hair, that captured his attention so completely that first day, was spread out around her. Despite the abrasions and bruises marring her caramel skin she was still the sexiest thing he had ever seen. Arousal slammed back through his body making him wish he could remove his clothes and feel his naked skin against hers. Take her, his wolf urged making his eyes glow. Goddess, he wanted to but now was not the time. When his wolf argued he remind him of her early hesitation. We just found her. If we go too fast we will scare her off. His wolf gave an aggravated huff but backed down. His human might have a point. Jordan shifted nervously under Xavier's gaze. "Beautiful," he breathed as his hands and mouth descended on her supple body. Jordan had no idea what Xavier was doing until she felt his tongue sliding over a cut on her shoulder, soothing away the sting and aches. Heat flared through her body as she was caressed by her mate's rough tongue and warm calloused hands. Her eyes rolled back in pleasure, her breast suddenly felt pleasantly swollen. Her nipple puckered drawing tighter with every swipe of Xavier's tongue. Xavier slowly made his way across her body. Licking every wound and lightly touching every inch of exposed skin. When he tenderly grasped her left breast in his large hand and gently sucked her taut nipple through her cotton bra into his mouth, the pleasurable heat shot down to pool in her pussy. Her juices dampened her thin panties as she let out a loud moan. Xavier couldn't suppress a satisfied grin as her honeyed arousal perfumed the air. He moved onto her right breast, Jordan held his head to her aching body. Xavier hadn't meant for his soothing to become so heated but his mate tasted like sin and his cock throbbed so painfully begging him to thrust into his mate's welcoming body. Her reaction to his touch made it pleasantly worse. The last wound on her hip was so close to her wet core he longed to rip off her panties and complete the mating but he wrestled his urges and pulled back. His mate's eyes were dark with pleasure, her hands pulled at his shirt trying to bring him back down to her. Xavier grasped her hands in his and held them over his heart as he perused his work. Though it would still take time for her to heal, each wound looked less inflamed and the bruises a little less prominent. It was the best he could do for now. The healing touch of a mate only went so far on physical wounds. Needing to get some control before he gave in to his need to take her Xavier began to pull away. A whimper from his mate drew his eyes back down to her. He couldn't help but run his hands over her luscious body one more time. As his fingers travelled over her hip and down her lithe legs he noticed a mark on the inside of the left thigh inches from her soaked panties. Xavier knew he should forego soothing this wound but he convinced himself that he had to be thorough. It wasn't until he was centimeters away that he realized it wasn't a bruise but a birthmark. But by then it was too late. He had to taste it. A quick flick of his tongue and he found that this spot tasted like heaven. He sealed his lips around the mark and sucked it gently causing both of them to moan deeply. Releasing her birthmark Xavier took a deep breath hoping to settle his urges, instead his senses were assaulted by the aroma of his mate's pussy which had grown stronger. With a groan Xavier gave into his desires and buried his face in Jordan's drenched covered pussy. Jordan gave a surprised yelp that turned into a groan of pleasure as Xavier slowly dragged his tongue across her panties and pressed his nose against her covered throbbing clit. Jordan had never felt anything like this. Never had any touch clouded her mind so thoroughly sending her into a bliss filled haze. She felt Xavier's fingers grasp her hips as his face left her core. She looked down at the gorgeous man between her thighs as he grasped the sides of her panties. Before going any further he looked up at her a question burning in his eyes. The warning voice in her head must have given in because she nodded her assent without hesitation. A distinctly wolfish gleam flashed in Xavier's eyes before he literally ripped the wet fabric from her body. Xavier nuzzled the short hairs between Jordan's toned thighs. Her back arched off the bed as Xavier sent pleasure pulsing through her. Raising her legs she spread them as wide as she could to allow him more access to her core that dripped for him. She could feel his smug grin pressed against her thigh as his fingers stroked her before opening her lower lips to his gaze. A shudder ran through her at the first touch of his tongue. Xavier growled as his mate's juices slid across his tongue. There was nothing like the sweet nectar that poured from her body with every moan. He reveled in every sound she made as his tongue delved and explored her dripping pussy. Xavier teased the entrance to her pulsing channel with his fingers while his tongue circled her staining clit. Jordan mewled and writhed beneath him encouraging him to continue his assault. "Please... " Jordan begged winding her hands in his hair. Opening her glazed eyes to look at him she begged him again. "Please!" The breathy urgency in her voice broke Xavier's resolve to savor her as slowly as possible. He couldn't deny her. Wishing it was his aching cock, Xavier slid a finger into her tight grasping channel and closed his lips over her sensitive clit. Alternating between licking and suckling her clit he slowly fucked his writhing mate with his thick finger. She was so tight he nearly came just from imagining it was his cock pistoning in and out of her pussy. Jordan was going wild. She pulled his hair then pressed his face to her core as she screamed her pleasure. Her channel began pulsing erratically heralding her on coming climax. Xavier finger fucked her faster and mercilessly lashed her clit. Then suddenly his mate was still. For a whole second there was silence as her body tensed. Then a wail pierced the room as her whole body began to shudder uncontrollably. Her fist clenched in her hair as he kept up his assault through her orgasm. When it seemed she was coming down Xavier added a second finger and gave a few more quick thrusts, gently scraped his teeth across her clit, and threw her screaming into a second climax. Slowly Jordan regained her ability to think. Her nipples were diamond hard and she had to message them through her bra to relieve the pressure. She couldn't stop her body from quivering and when she tried to close her legs she realized Xavier was still lapping up her excess juices. Damn she was sore! But she couldn't bring herself to tell him to stop. Jordan had never had such an orgasm, never experienced such bliss. God that man was talented and, she thought All mine! Xavier looked up with a roguish grin. "Yes," he said, "I am yours." Jordan blushed, she didn't realize she'd said it out loud. With one last lick Xavier slid up her still quivering body and pulled her into his arms. "I'm yours," he kissed her tenderly, "and you're mine." Secure in Xavier's arms Jordan felt at peace for the first in years. In his arms she felt at home. The thought shocked her but before she could dwell on it Xavier's cell phone rang shattering their moment. Xavier sighed not wanting to release his mate but he couldn't ignore his phone any longer. "I have to get that Kitten, but I'll be right back," he promised. Jordan nodded her understanding and curled up into the spot he'd just vacated to doze. Grabbing his phone off the window sill he angrily jabbed the buttons. "What?" he growled, annoyance coloring his voice. There was a brief second of silence then, "Don't take that tone with me pup!" Xavier cringed, "Sorry Mina, I was with my mate." "It's okay sweetie. I just wanted to ask what kind of food your mate prefers so we can add it to the menu." Xavier laughed, "Jordan eats everything." "Really?" Mina asked skeptically. "Really, infact" Xavier added with a chuckle, "you might want to lock up the pantry. She is likely to devour everything in sight." An outraged shriek was the only warning he had before a pillow beaned the back of his head. "Ow," Xavier turned to face his mate with a mock scowl. "What happened?" "She hit me with a pillow!" Xavier said in disbelief. Mina snorted, "Good girl." "Mina! You're supposed to be on my side," "Hardly," she scoffed, "Now hurry up and bring her home to me" she demanded before abruptly hanging up. Xavier stared at his phone in shock. "Well," he said looking up at his mate, "Mina has ordered me to bring you home. Of course, last time I checked I was Alpha of our pack." "Well, we all have our own delusions," Jordan said laughing when Xavier pinned her with a glare. "We better get going before she comes to get us herself." Xavier returned to the bed and sat on the edge. A wide yawn escaped her as she stretched out like a sleepy kitten. "You okay?" he asked tenderly brushing her hair out of her face before perusing the rest of her lithe body. A deep blush stole down her cheeks staining her neck and chest as she realized that but for her bra she was completely naked and exposed to his gaze. Jordan grabbed a pillow to cover herself and nodded shyly. When she looked in his eyes she saw the gleam of male satisfaction as they both remembered why she was damn near naked. Embarrassed Jordan glanced around the room to avoid his gaze. She found she didn't regret their actions but was still shocked that she'd given in to him so readily. Trying to push it out of her mind she continued looking around the tiny room and realized her things were missing. "What happened to my bag and clothes?" she asked frowning. "Huh?" "My clothes?" "Oh," Xavier shook himself out of his daze. He'd been distracted by the lovely sight she made slightly rumpled by their play. " They're in the bathroom. I started packing your things while you slept." "Why?" "You can't stay here," Xavier said wrinkling his nose in disgust. "You're my mate it's my job to protect you. "I can take care of myself Xavier," anger lighting up her hazel eyes. "I've been doing it my whole life." "I know," he conceded. "But ever since I found you living in this horrid place I've worried about your safety." Seeing she was about to argue, he pressed on. "This neighborhood isn't safe. And after last night can you blame me? Come home with me," he implored taking her delicate hands in his. "I know it's fast but you're my mate. Your home is with me. Stay with me," his desperation was more than evident but Xavier didn't care. This was his mate. He'd waited so long for her, begging was the least he was willing to do to keep her. A lump grew in Jordan's throat. A real home was all she had ever wanted. And this man... this wolf was offering to fulfill her dream. Be careful, her mind warned her. But when she saw the sincere longing in Xavier's eyes her heart overrode all the caution she'd built up over the years. "For how long?" "Forever! Be with me, be mine!... Please," he pleaded. The need in his voice as that last word slipped out broke down years of defences and she nodded her assent too shocked to speak. Xavier's relief poured through the room at her acceptance. Gathering her into his arms he communicated all his roiling emotions with one scorching kiss. When he finally released her lips he buried his nose in her hair taking comfort from her sweet scent and her relaxed form in his arms. "Thank you," she whispered. "For what?" Xavier was confused she had given him everything he had ever wanted. "For giving me a home," "It's only a home if you're with me. I would follow you to the ends of the earth." The couple sat entwined in each other silently reveling in their new found happiness. Xavier's eyes drifted past the alarm clock and jumped. "Speaking of homes. If I don't bring you back Mina might kick me out." Jordan laughed. "I thought it was your house." "I used to think so too," he snorted. "Come on, let's go." Jordan giggled, "Um, Xavier as excited as I am I think it would be best if I got dressed first," looking down at herself she wrinkled her nose, "and took a shower." "I think you look and smell delicious," he said licking his lips. At her pointed glare he added, "But I guess you can't leave like that. I'd have to kill everyone that looked at you." His wolf agreed wholeheartedly. Jordan laughed at the completely serious expression on her mate's face and got up to go to the bathroom. Her bag lay open on the bathroom floor. Jordan turned to close the door and blushed at the expression on Xavier's face. His head tilted to the side and his mouth hung open as he brazenly stared at her ass. She could practically see his wolf staring at her through his eyes. Shaking her head she closed the bathroom door. Glancing at herself in the mirror Jordan took in her disheveled appearance. Her hair was knotted and frizzy, her skin was still bruised and faintly scratched, and her knees still wobbled from the intense orgasms Xavier had lavished on her. She climbed into the shower sighing as the hot water washed away her aches. She found herself grinning while washing her hair. Part of her wanted to rush out of the shower and yank the door open to make sure Xavier hadn't disappeared while she washed. It wasn't until she'd gotten out of the shower and finished combing her hair that the doubts began to creep in on her euphoria. What if Xavier changed his mind? What if it turned out it wasn't what she wanted? What if she embarrassed him? What if his friends and family rejected her? A swarm of rampaging butterflies took up residence in her stomach. The "what ifs" flew through her mind building and swelling until she nearly screamed. "Enough!" She told herself. For once her heart and instincts were of one accord. Being with Xavier was right. She just knew it. One more "what if" fluttered through her mind. What if he finds someone else? Jordan looked at herself in the mirror and squared her shoulders. This is what she wanted and Jordan had never been a coward. If Xavier decided he wanted someone else she would fight for him. And if she couldn't have him she'd do what she always had. She would pick her heart up off the ground, lock it away, and move on. But this time it would be forever. She knew instinctively that she would never get over Xavier. The small dark voice she usually ignored added. If he hurts me I can kill him and any bitch that gets between us. Confidence restored, Jordan began rifling through her meager possessions. What did one wear to meet a pack of wolves? ***** It was sheer torture. Xavier laid back on the bed listening to the shower. His mate's erotic scent filled the small room. He could almost taste her in the air. There was no escape and he didn't dare leave her alone to step outside for some fresh air. Stealing My Heart Ch. 06 His erection pressed firmly against his jean zipper. He'd thought he would explode when he'd taken her in his mouth and felt her writhing. Imagining her naked in the shower was wrecking havoc on his control again. His wolf wanted to break down the door and join her but his mate wasn't ready. So Xavier pressed the heel of his hand to is to his aching groin and prayed to the Goddess for control. A knock on the front door interrupted Xavier's mated induced purgatory. With a groan he rolled off the bed and got up. He scented Zach, his best tracker, on the other side and opened the door. "Did you find anything?" Knowing how important this was to his Alpha he immediately started his report. "What ever shifters were out here are gone now. However I scented three unknown shifters not two. Of those, two were those who trespassed in our territory. They were staking out a spot across the street there. Your mate's room was in clear view. One left earlier than the others but there has been too much time and other scents of the city have covered their scents. I can't track where they went or came from," Zach reported, then added, "I hate the city." "Did anyone on your team recognize the scents?" "Just the two that were in our territory. Two of them definitely smell like rogues. You know dirty and wild. But one of the ones who chased your mate didn't smell completely rogue. Maybe on the verge but not crossed over yet." "The one that touched my mate was obviously a rogue," Xavier growled low and menacing. "And he attacked my mate before, his name was Marco. The other rogue who was with them must be the one Jordan said they called Simon," Xavier puzzled. "I will work on getting those names out there. I'll make sure our pack members are on their guard. Someone working or living in the city has to have had contact with another shifter they didn't recognize. Even if they didn't realize they were rogue." Even though Xavier would have liked to have at last had a location to track these rogues to, he was pleased with his lead trackers work. Zach was the best at what he did. No one had a better nose. He trained all their pack trackers. Some other packs even sent their potential trackers to be trained by him. If Zach said the scent was lost no one could find it again. Xavier nodded, "Okay. Let me know the moment you hear anything." "Of course," Zach was about to turn away when he added with a knowing smile, "How's the mate?" Of his close group Zach was the only one who was mated. Zach had found his mate early in his life. She had been a tracker in the Carson pack who had come to train with him. Zach had scented her before she had even crossed over into their territory. Shifting into his wolf form he had sprung on her the moment he saw her. "A little shook up. But she's strong, a fighter. She'll be an amazing Alpha Female." The pride and confidence showed in his voice and body. Zach smiled, thrilled for his friend, and left the motel with his trackers. Xavier closed the door and returned to the bed as the bathroom door clicked open. His mate stepped out smoothing down the skirt of her lavender dress. It was a simple worn cotton summer dress that she wore with a pair of black flats. The simple dress seemed made for her, it hugged her curves and stopped just above her knees highlighting her graceful legs. The color of the dress made her smooth skin glow with warmth and invitation. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail that flowed over her shoulder. "Do I look okay?" she asked nervously. "Gorgeous," he said taking her bag from her hand and wrapping his arm around her. "Absolutely perfect." ***** It was almost 2 o'clock when they arrived at the main house. The drive had been spent in comfortable silence. Jordan loved the journey through the sun dappled woods. The serenity of it adding to the dream like state she had been in since the night before. She kept finding herself staring in awe and affection at the man beside her and blushing profusely when he caught her. Xavier couldn't help but grin. Jordan tore her eyes away from her mate when the woods opened up into a wide clearing and a gorgeous, towering white house was spread before them. Eyes wide, her jaw dropped. Xavier chuckled at her expression. "I thought you said you lived in a house!," Jordan exclaimed. "This is my house," Xavier said confused and suddenly anxious. What if his mate didn't like his home. He thought nervously. Then we will make her a new den, his wolf grumbled irritatedly at his human's stupidity. Somehow that didn't make Xavier feel better. "No," Jordan said waving her hands frantically, "that's a freakin' mansion." "You don't like it?" Xavier asked sheepishly. Jordan recognized his worries and reached out to him. "Baby, it's beautiful," she said sincerely. "I just suddenly feel like that dirty homeless person everyone pities but no one wants in their home. The one everyone watches to make sure they aren't stealing the silver and pocketing the family jewels. I mean, I am homeless it's not that far of a stretch," Jordan sighed morosely. "I just don't want to embarrass you or sully your beautiful home," she added miserably looking down at her hands twisting in her lap. Suddenly this didn't seem like such a good idea. She didn't want to be seen as "that thing" Xavier brought home, especially to the people Xavier loved and saw as his extended family. Xavier had pulled up in front of the house and could sense the shifters eagerly watching the car from behind the curtains. He was suddenly glad of the tinted windows that gave them a little privacy. Xavier was alarmed at Jordan's outburst. While it was true a few of his pack would look down on his choice of mate, the majority were thrilled. Turning towards her he reached out and tilted her chin up to look at him. Her soft skin and the tears she bravely help back melted him a little more. "Kitten, do you know how excited my pack is to meet you? It's not everyday a shifter finds their mate. It can take centuries. It's a blessing from the goddess and a cause for celebration. Sure, there are nasty people in every group but once they meet you I'm sure most of them will love you almost as much as I do." "But... " Xavier shushed her interruption and went on. "This is your home now and you will have one with me as long as you're willing to stay." Xavier gently brushed away an escaped tear. "Derek told them all about how you stole my wallet and frankly, most of them are kind of impressed. I will never live that down," Xavier said with a put upon sigh making Jordan smile wobbly. "Thanks for that. Kitten you have nothing to worry about." Xavier placed a gentle kiss on her lips before letting her go. With a straight face, eyes glowing slightly, he growled "Besides, if anyone even looks at you wrong I'll kill them." Not realizing he was dead serious Jordan laughed and wiped the escaped tears from her face. "Okay," Jordan said taking a deep breath, "my insecurities have been stuffed back in their box. I'm ready." Before she could psych herself out again she stepped out of the car. Xavier hurried to meet her in front of the car and took her hand. Together they walked up to the house. The door swung open as they reached the porch to reveal a woman. She was elegant even with her hair pulled back in a severe bun and wearing a stained apron over her flowing dress. Her brown eyes sparkled and smiled despite the glare she sent Xavier's way. "Do you know what time it is? I have been waiting all day for you to get back! After you ran out of here like a maniac no one knew what had happened or where you went. Do you know how worried I've been?" Xavier opened his mouth to answer but the woman kept going. "I thought I taught you better." She snatched up an umbrella from a stand by the door and brandished it wildly at Xavier who took a step back. "Didn't bother to call! We had to call your phone five times before you picked up. Pup I don't care if you're Alpha I will spank you." By this time a small group of shifters had gathered. First gaping in shock then hiding wide smiles and tears of laughter. "Left without breakfast. Damn near gave me a heart attack. Pup I should... " A loud snort followed by bright peals of laughter exploded from Jordan interrupting the tirade. Everyone's attention turned to the tiny human beside their Alpha. Seeing Xavier's incredulous look she tried and failed to get her laughter under control. "I'm so sorry baby," she chuckled finally calming a bit. "If I'd known I'd get you in so much trouble I wouldn't have called so early." "Nonsense, " Mina said primly with a careless wave of her hand, "he's your mate he's supposed to do whatever you tell him." "I don't think... " a dark glare from Mina and Xavier's jaw snapped shut. "Now let me look at you," Mina drew Jordan into the house. The foyer had high windows allowing in a lot of warm golden sunshine. A grand staircase sat to the side leading to the upper floors while across from the front door was a hall that led deeper into the house. Jordan couldn't help but gape in wonder. A few giggles brought a blush to her cheeks and Mina shooed away the watching crowd. "Now aren't you a beautiful little thing. I'm so happy you are finally here." Jordan found herself swept into a tight hug. Despite Xavier's assurances she'd still had her doubts. But now wrapped in the welcoming arms of this woman she felt some of her fears melt away. "Look at me crying like a child," she smiled and wiped her tears when she finally let Jordan go. "Come, come I have food in the kitchen for you. We can talk there." Mina fussed over Jordan all the way down the hall while Xavier followed sheepishly behind them like a lost puppy. "I've got so much to tell you," Mina said sitting Jordan down. Before she continued Mina turned to find Xavier awkwardly shifting in the doorway. "What are you still doing here? I'm sure you have things you need to be doing right about now," she said sternly. "Mina I can't just leave my mate here," Xavier tried to explain. "Why not? You don't trust me to take care of her" Mina asked haughtily. "No, that's not... " "You think I'd let someone hurt her?" "No but... " "You don't think she can handle herself?" Xavier shook his head. He should have known not to argue with Mina. He could never win. Xavier's expression reminded Jordan of a little boy caught sneaking cookies before dinner. Mina softened looking at Xavier with obvious affection. Patting his shoulder, Mina assured him Jordan would be fine. "Besides you can't be with her all the time. You got to let her stand on her own feet. Now go on you'll see her soon enough." A mischievous glint entered Xavier's eye. Quickly he dodged around Mina into the forbidden zone of the kitchen. "Hey!" Mina cried as he swept Jordan into his arms and kissed her soundly. With a huge grin he swiped a roll off the cooling rack, escaping out the open sliding glass door into the pack grounds behind the house. Mina shook her head and smiled. "I'll let it slide this time," she called out the door. The shifters working in the kitchen laughed. "But only because he finally brought me his mate," she winked at her helpers and went to join Jordan at the table. Stealing My Heart Ch. 07 A/N: So sorry. Once again life got in the way. Thanks for hanging in there with me. Much love to all my fans without you I wouldn't know how to go on. Enjoy all comment welcome. ***** "You had one job! To watch and report back. How did you manage to fuck that up?" Marco watched the vein in Simon's head throb angrily and tried not to cringe. "How could you fuck up again?" He screamed before lashing out claws extended. Marco fell back with a groan clutching his face, blood running between his fingers. "Stop whining and get off the floor," Simon growled turning to Case, "next time I send you out keep him on a leash," he spat. Case covered his snort of derision with a cough and left Marco to pick himself up. Marco was no more than a spoiled boy with dreams of being Alpha. He also liked causing others pain, especially females. Case may have been an outcast but he had some moral fiber. Marco wasn't worth his time or energy. As Simon stalked into Dean Terrance's office two of his men pushed past him dragging a struggling omega between them. Dean was draped across his chair as though it were a throne his feet kicked up on the heavy mahogany desk. "Chuck, why are you bringing that trash in here?" he drawled. "We found him trying to sneak in to the holding cells," Chuck tossed the shifter to the floor before collapsing into a chair before his Alpha. "Please Alpha, my mate is in there. She's pregnant, she needs me," the shifter pleaded on his knees. "Are all of your wolves so pathetic?" Simon sneered. "Unfortunately. But we will be getting new pack members soon." "Alpha," the omega begged, "please I can feel her through our bond." "She broke pack law," Dean snarled jumping to his feet. "No . . . no . . . she wasn't trying to flee. I swear." "She was caught trying to pass into another pack's territory. No one leaves. No one!" His face turned purple with rage and he slammed his fists into the desktop. Theo struggled not to show is hate and contempt for the unworthy Alpha's fury. It was only the feeling of his mate trying to suppress her suffering through their bond that kept him from speaking his mind. Most of the pack stayed only because Dean had locked up a loved one and fleeing would be a death sentence for those held in the cramped shifter proof cells. There were some quiet whispers about uniting to overthrow Dean's leadership but with the betas firmly in Dean's pocket and submission so ingrained in the lower ranking shifters it was an impossible hope. "Alpha if you just . . ." "You know what Theo," Dean interrupted with mock sincerity, "You're right, you should be with your mate. Archie, Chuck, put him into the cell with the others," Dean flopped back into his chair with a flippant wave of his hand. Theo was so shocked he gave no resistance when Chuck and Archie, cackling, took a bruising grip on his arms and dragged him back out. "You keep this up you're going to run out of wolves," "I don't need any advice from you. You're not even a real alpha." Dean sneered. "When I signed on you promised me more. But since then all we've done is scare a few wolves and keep yours from leaving. What good is that?" Simon snarled. "We'll do this on my time! Don't push me. I'm going to destroy Xavier Cambridge. I'm going to take his mate, his pack, and his land. And when I have all that I'm going to crush him body and soul." "Yeah, yeah. That's all good but how?" Delia complained sauntering into the offices and perching daintily on the edge of Dean's desk. "Good question," Simon added sarcastically, "I don't think our Alpha's thought of that just yet." "The girl is the key. We get the girl we control Cambridge," Dean answered haughtily. "Good luck with that. Xavier's moving her to the compound. He's never gonna let her out of his sight or covered by his most trusted and lethal betas," Delia complained. "So we have to find a way to separate the two of them," Dean started to pace around his office. "He has to be far enough that he can't get back quickly. But how?" Dean looked up and saw Simon lounging against the wall and bared his teeth in a grim smile, "How do you feel about cats?" ------- The kitchen was a whirlwind of activity. Pans were flying in and out of the large ovens, piles of vegetables were being washed, chopped and diced, and enormous amounts of meat were baked, grilled, and fried. Though Mina clearly wanted time to chat with Jordan she had to get up every few minutes to help in the prep work and direct her helpers. During one of Mina's trips around the kitchen Jordan had had enough. Mina had insisted she sit and relax but Jordan was never one to sit around when there was work to be done. Taking a spare apron off the rack by the door she joined a girl peeling potatoes. It was a few minutes before the girl realized she was there. Wide eyed, she dropped her knife and just stared. "Um . . . am I doing it wrong?" Jordan asked self consciously. "No," the girl stammered. "But you're the Alpha's mate. This is omega work." "Okay," Jordan said confused, "I'm not sure what that means." The girl just continued to stare. "It means that you're supposed to be above these sort of menial tasks," another woman said joining them at the table. This woman smiled lighting up her entire face. Her nose and cheeks were peppered with freckles and her tousled light brown hair was cropped short. Her blue eyes sparkled as Jordan took in her long legs in envy. "Don't mind Erin, she's just likes rules. I'm Taryn and I say the more the merrier!" Jordan smiled at the newcomer. "I'm Jordan and I'm happy to help." "But you're the Alpha's mate," Erin exclaimed clearly still in shock. "Well if that means I'm not supposed to cook I should warn you, not only do I cook, I also clean dishes," Erin's eyes practically popped from her head. "Yes," Jordan said seriously leaning in with a mock whisper. "Don't tell anyone but sometimes I even clean bathrooms!" Erin shrieked nearly falling from her seat. Jordan was surprised when Taryn and a few others burst into laughter. They quickly introduced themselves as they moved whatever they were working on to join Jordan and Erin at their table. "I'm so glad," one of the shifters said, "we were worried you'd be scared or uptight." "At least she's not a cat. I heard there was a wolf in another pack whose mate was some sort of cat." The woman named Clara shivered. "I don't know," Taryn said. "Cats are cuddlers. I hope my mate likes to cuddle," she said dreamily. "Not me. I want a nice strong wolf." "Are there many other kinds of shifter," Jordan asked curious. "Well," Taryn said. "The cat shifters include tigers, lions, and panthers. Then there are bears, hawks, and obviously the wolves." "Wolves are the best," Clara declared. "I'm guessing there is some kind of rivalry going on?" Jordan asked. "Hah!," Taryn laughed. "Rivalry? We're all but at war. We're lucky there are only wolf packs in this area. A few hours north of us is cat territory. Three different prides." "Prides ... War?" "Prides are groups of cats. Like packs of wolves. And were not at really war. It's just extreme dislike I guess," Taryn said offhandedly. "More like hate, abhorrence, detestation!" said a girl named Emma who bounced and smiled cheerfully with every word. Jordan couldn't help but smile at her demeanor. "Why?" she asked. "It's just bad blood," Taryn said. "We argue about who are the goddess's favorite, who's stronger, etc. "The hawks are just weird!" Jessica exclaimed. "Weird? You're one to talk Jess. You passed weird and slammed straight into psycho a long time ago. Have you even met a hawk shifter?," Taryn scoffed. Jessica stuck her tongue out at her while the rest of the women laughed. ---- Xavier had left his mate with trepidation. He knew his mate was safe but he still hadn't claimed her yet. Any one could try to steal his mate away. So caught up in his thoughts, Xavier didn't sense Zach until he was right next to him. "The beta's are ready to hear from you regarding the changes whenever you're ready and the Felix of one the prides called for you earlier. He sounded pissed. Good luck with that." Zach grinned. "Let's go talk to the betas. I'll call the Felix later." Xavier sighed, "Cats," he said shaking his head. ---- The barbeque was in full swing. Shifters filled the clearing eating, talking, laughing. Children ran wild weaving between the adults as they played. Xavier was still meeting with his betas but Eva had been released early to find Jordan and begin her unofficial introduction to the pack. Jordan was shocked by how warmly she was received. A few were wary and some greeted her with hostile stares but the majority, like Mina, were falling over themselves to meet her. Jordan was worried when she realized many avoided eye contact but was slightly reassured when Eva told her it was a sign of respect. Respect wasn't something she was used to from anyone, let alone complete strangers. As they were leaving one group Eva called to a plump older woman with snow white hair and sparkling blue eyes. "I'm Ella," she said gathering her in a tight hug, "I'm so pleased to meet you." A gruff voice came from behind them, "So this is the human Xavier brought to us." "Don't mind Jonas," Ella told her reassuringly, "he's just old and cranky." The elder huffed, "I'm worried about the state of this pack. Bringing in humans and thieves at that. It's probably trying to steal from us." Eva saw hurt flash across Jordan's face before it disappeared behind a sunny smile. "Damn, you caught me," Jordan sighed in mock defeat. "This whole mating thing was a charade. I've actually been casing the place, because stealing from a pack of werewolves was a the top of my to do list. But since you discovered my nefarious plans I guess I'll just go through with this whole mating thing," Jordan shrugged innocently. Deep roaring laughter erupted behind her making Jordan turn to find Derek and Tomas grinning at her. "Ah Goon 1 and 2 where's your triplet?" Jordan grinned back. "Oh he's around here somewhere. Probably with his family. I'm goon 1 right?" Derek asked. "Right," Jordan said seriously before shaking her head and adding in a mock whisper to Tomas, "You're the real number 1." Derek put his hand over his heart a pained look on his face. The group laughed merrily. "Ouch, I'll go lick my wounds later in private." "You've never need privacy before to lick yourself," Eva snorted. Derek shoved her playfully. "I see you've met my mom," Derek gave the smiling woman an affectionate squeeze. "We were just getting to know each other," Ella said happily as Jonas stormed off with an angry snort while the rest of the small group settled down to eat and enjoy each others company. She hadn't noticed until her muscles began to cramp from sitting on the ground just how comfortable she had come to feel with this group of shifters. Sitting there with Eva, the goons and a few others who came and drifted away she found herself a little overwhelmed. It was amazing how she had never known just how alone she was until she was surrounded by these people. It felt so good to be part of a group . . . a pack. Offering to refill drinks gave her a chance to stretch her legs and a few moments to ruminate on her new discovery. She wasn't alone anymore, she had a pack! Jordan grabbed a few sodas from a large cooler and began to make her way back to the group. Smiling she drifted around tables and people, sidestepped around kids, enjoying the warm sunlight. A flock of children ran past her and as she quickly hopped out of the way a hand reached out and grabbed her bruised arm tightly. Instinct flared through her. Before the pain even registered she was dropping the sodas, spinning back, and kicking her attacker just above his kneecap before following up with another swift kick to his unprotected groin. I won't be a victim again, she snarled to herself setting up her body for defense against another attack. But instead of the assault she expected she was met with the sight of her attacker on his knees clutching his groin and howling in pain. "You bitch!" the shifter snarled into the stunned silence of the crowd. "You filthy . . ." the unknown shifter was snatched up by his throat and twisting in the air before the last syllable could drop from his snarling lips. Jordan had barely registered the breeze of his passing before Xavier stood before her choking the dangling shifter with one hand. His eyes snapped with glowing fury, a fuzz of black fur started crawling up his arms. Glancing around she found herself flanked by all 3 of the goons. "You dare touch my mate," Xavier growled his voice deeper than usual while shaking the shifter by his throat. A choked whimper barely left the man, his eyes bulging, trying to breath while simultaneously trying to convey submission to his Alpha. Jordan could practically see Xavier's wolf shining in his eyes reveling in the moment and contemplating the most efficient way to kill the fool. At once she felt both cherished and fearful of her mate. Something about this fierce animal side of her mate thrilled her, arousal burned low in her stomach. No one had ever protected her before. But she also felt fear, hoping that anger would never be turned on her. She hated that she had been attacked but she couldn't let Xavier kill one of his pack for her. Gathering her courage she took a step forward and laid a gentle hand on her mate's forearm. "Jordan don't . . . ," she heard behind her, but she went ahead anyway. A short growl was cut off when Xavier felt the faint pressure on his arm and looked down to see his tiny mate by his side. "Let him go," she whispered but the wolf in him only tightened his grip. He wanted his prey to suffer. Xavier felt his mate's fingers twisting into his sleeve. "Let him go," she repeated more forcefully. This time he smelled the flash of fear she was trying to hide from him. Xavier struggled with his wolf. They both wanted to kill the insolent half grown pup for hurting their mate but he didn't like the fear. The same fear he smelled when she described her attacker in the alley. "Please," she said reaching up to stroke his clenched jaw. That was all the wolf needed. Dropping his prey he turned, picked up his mate, and kissed her soundly. Ignoring the pup who wheezed in gulps of air and crawled away as fast as he could. Jordan felt so right in his arms. With every second she softened and warmed, her curves molding to his body. Xavier inhaled deeply allowing himself to drown in her fresh scent, to assure himself that no scent of fear lingered and focusing on enhancing the addicting aroma of her arousal. The silence surrounding the couple was pierced with a shout "by the will of the goddess." The blessing was echoed through the crowd followed by a cacophony of cheering and howls of joy. "The Goddess has brought me a great gift," Xavier announced as the cheering died down. "I have found my mate," the cheering and howls rose up again and Xavier couldn't stop the broad grin from stretching across his face as he beamed down at her and she gazed up adoringly at him. "She is amazing and she is mine!" he rumbled happily. "We will celebrate our mating at the next full moon in two weeks as is our custom. So eat and later we will run as pack. My last as an unpaired wolf." With his last words the pack returned to their food and each other. Xavier smiled proudly at his pack and was about to take his mate away when something small flew out of the crowd and latched onto his leg. Looking down he saw a mass of shiny black curls surrounding the sweet cherubic face of Zach's daughter Terra. Clearly he wasn't going to get any alone time with his mate anytime soon. "Uncle Alpha," she cried happily, "your mate is pretty," she glanced at Jordan who, Xavier realized, he was holding tightly to his side. Apart of him wanted to rush her up to his rooms and hide her away so he wouldn't have to share her. But as Alpha he couldn't keep her to himself especially since she would be their future Alpha Queen. He could practically feel his pack's eyes boring holes in his mate. "And who is this," Jordan asked crouching down next to Terra who was now hiding bashfully behind his legs. "Who this?" Xavier joked "This is my dinner," he growled quietly, snapping her up and pretending to take a bite out of the giggling pup. Jordan experienced an unexpected flash of joy as she thought about Xavier as the father of their future children. She had never even considered having children before. Shaking the thought from her mind she turned her attention back to the pup Xavier was tickling. "I'm not food," she cried happily, "I'm Terra!" "It's nice to meet you Terra. I'm Jordan," Terra launched herself into Jordan's arms and took a tentative sniff. "You smell pretty. Like sunshine. Much better than my brother, he smells like skunk!" she rattled off happily. "Your brother does not smell like skunk," a tall lean woman sighed as she came up to the small group holding a boy a few years younger than Terra. All three shared similar black curls. Lowering her eyes and nodding her head respectfully the woman warmly introduced herself. "I'm Lenora, Zach's mate, and this terror," she said with a gesture towards the bundle wrapped in Jordan's arms, "is our daughter." Terra laughed brightly, she had clearly been introduced this way many times before. "And this is Scott. Don't you want to say hi to our Alphas?" Lenora coaxed. Scott turned away from his mother's shoulder where he had been hiding behind her glossy curls. His large blue eyes widened as he saw Jordan and blinked his impossibly long lashes. Shuffling Terra to one arm Jordan gave Scott a small wave. "Hi there." Scott reached out his chubby arm and grabbed Jordan's hand, brought it to his mouth and gave her a sloppy, wet, toddler kiss. Scott grinned happily but when Jordan grinned back he nervously poofed into a small wolf pup. Surprising Jordan into a bright laugh. "I think Scott has his first crush," Xavier smirked. "He still smells," Terra muttered causing the adults to laugh even more. "It's so nice to finally meet you. Unfortunately, it's time to get these little one's corralled before the pack run. But I can't wait to get to know you. I usually work with the other trackers if you need anything or have any free time." The women shared a warm smile before Lenora dragged Terra grumbling off, pausing briefly to share a chaste kiss with her mate. "Nice kick," Taryn said bouncing up to the Alphas with a grin causing many to burst into laughter. "It was pretty amazing," Derek added with a grimace, "but did you have to kick him in the nuts? I almost felt that." "There is no such thing as a low blow when you're trying to defend yourself," Jordan said with a wicked grin. She'd learned that the hard way. "Note to self: Always wear a cup when surprising our Alpha," Tomas winked. "That's my girl!" Xavier said with an amused laugh and triumphant grin. Xavier hauled Jordan up against his hard body to kiss her soundly. He couldn't get enough of her lips. Obligation to his pack, the only thing keeping him from taking her away and having her all to himself. ------ As the sun began to set a sense of anticipation washed through the pack. Children were gathered and taken to the main house rec room. Mina and the kitchen staff began cleaning up the clearing. Xavier finally managed to pull Jordan away into the quiet of his office. "Did you eat," Jordan asked. "Let me go get you a plate before Mina puts it all away." "No, I'm okay. I just wanted to talk to you before the pack run." Xavier leaned back on his desk and pulled Jordan to stand between his legs to rest comfortingly against his chest. "Are you happy?," he asked nervously. Stealing My Heart Ch. 07 "I am. Honestly, I'm sure it's going to take awhile to get completely comfortable here with the pack but I am happy with you." Jordan whispered into the quiet as they watched the sunset through the large picture windows. Dark slowly overtook the room as the warm sunlight faded. The sky's oranges and pinks settling into deep blue."Though, I noticed your pack seems to expect a lot from me." Xavier sighed, "since we're being honest I should probably tell you more about what being my mate entails." "That would be nice." Xavier held both her hands in his and looked into Jordan's sparkling hazel eyes willing her to see his sincerity. "In my world mates are sacred. The goddess providing for us the other half of our soul. But for Alpha's finding a mate is even more important. A mate strengthens the Alpha's which strengthens the pack," Xavier paused to make sure he was being clear, Jordan nodded. "My jobs as Alpha is to protect and lead the pack. I handle major disputes and ensure the future of our pack as a whole. My role is important but the role of Alpha Queen is vital. The Alpha Queen looks after the individuals of the pack. She ensures that everyone not only has everything they need but is also at home in the pack. My mom always said 'There is no Alpha without a pack'. If the pack members are unhappy they fight, disrupt daily life, or even worse leave the pack. If they leave what good am I?" "That's a big job," Jordan said nervously stepping away. "You'll be great. Eva has been Alpha Female and she will help you," "That's not what I meant," she exclaimed breaking completely out of Xavier's embrace, gesturing wildly in her frustration. "When you asked me to be your mate you never said anything about being an Alpha of a whole pack of shifters. You wanted me to join your family and I'm good with that. But this is . . ." she shook her head in defeat. "I knew agreeing to move in with you was crazy. Especially after only knowing you a week but how can you expect me to lead anyone. I've never been responsible for anyone but myself. Maybe I don't want to be Alpha Female." Xavier reached out to comfort her but Jordan stepped out of his range. He could see the overwhelming confusion in her eyes and cursed himself for not anticipating her reaction. He was so happy he'd finally found his mate that he'd forgotten that she wasn't a shifter and wouldn't understand their customs. Any female shifter would have accepted that they would take on his rank and responsibility without question. Face in his hands Xavier let out a strangled laugh, "I really fucked this up didn't I? I'm so sorry Jordan," he said lifting his head to look pleadingly into her eyes. "I realize that I come with a hell of a lot of baggage and by asking you to stay you would be in for a lot, but please, before you decide, give us a chance," he begged. "What about the fact that I'm human? Everyone keeps hinting about me being changed. But what if I don't want to be changed? What if I want to stay human?" Jordan could see Xavier's struggle but her frustration kept her from being able to go to him. "Do you not want to be with me?," he growled.. "Of course I want to be with you," Jordan exclaimed her anger rising with Xavier's furious outburst. "But does being with you mean I must give up who I am?" "I would become human for you?" "That's easy to say when it's not possible," she shot back. "You said you wanted me for who I am. You said who I am is enough for you. Was it a lie?" Jordan asked fighting tears. "If I say no will you get rid of me and chose another?" she asked defiantly, upset when her voice cracked with emotion. Xavier swiped at his face trying to swallow back an angry retort. "I do want you! No one else. If staying human is what you want I will learn to live with it. Becoming a shifter doesn't change who you are. But as a human you are weaker." "I defended myself today," "You got lucky," Xavier snarled. "If you stay human I will have to protect you day and night. Even the pups will be a threat to you!" Xavier saw the shock and hurt on Jordan's face but he couldn't stop all his worries from boiling out of his mouth. "Since I've met you've been attacked multiple times, you lived in the most dangerous area I could find, and you're about two steps away from being thrown in jail. Not to mention you're too pretty for your own good. You're like a trouble magnet!" Jordan's face scrunched up in anger confusion but he kept going. "If you stay human you could die so easily in so many ways. What if you get hurt? Shifters heal quickly and easily. You could die of the common cold. I've been waiting for you for over two centuries. As a human you could be gone in the blink of an eye. And if I'm lucky, in fifty years, you grow old. And then . . . and then," suddenly Xavier ran out of steam, his shoulders slumped. The days of sleepless nights catching up to him, draining his energy. "And then you'll d . . . die and leave me all alone . . . again," Xavier dropped to his knees before his mate, wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his face in the soft curve of her stomach. He took a long soothing breath, inhaling her scent. Then he looked up at her letting his shields down to confess, "I can't lose you Kitten. I'm just not that strong." The soft silk of Xavier's inky black hair slid between her fingers. She wanted to stay mad, she wanted to rage against his domineering attitude. But kneeling before her, his heart in his eyes, she just couldn't hold onto her anger. She'd always been good at holding a grudge but with him she just couldn't. He obviously cared deeply for her and she couldn't fault him for that. Jordan sank down beside him and took his face in her hands. "I want to be with you. I already told you being with you is the one thing in my life that has immediately felt so right. And that hasn't changed," she added quickly stroking his cheek, enjoying the roughness of his whiskers, to reassure him when he opened his mouth to argue. "I don't know if I can be Alpha. Does mating with you mean I have to be Alpha?" she asked gently. "Mating with me automatically comes with the pack. I can't leave them," he said unapologetic. Being Alpha was a commitment he wouldn't give up, couldn't give up. He'd never abandon his pack. "But I'm willing to wait to complete the mating until you're sure it's what you want." His wolf was raging inside him with every word but he fought to make them true. He couldn't force her but he could do everything in his power to change her mind. "Complete the mating? I thought we were mated." Unable to keep his hands off her Xavier settled on the floor and pulled Jordan onto his lap seeking comfort for both of them. "Clearly, another thing I have overlooked," he sighed. "You are my one and only mate. Nothing will ever change that. But with shifters mates are only official when they bare each others mark. We'd make love," he whispered seductively in her ear, "and during your climax I would bite you here," he brushed his lips across her throat and down to where the graceful curve met her shoulder. He smiled when he felt the shiver run through her body; he wasn't above seducing her into changing her mind. It would definitely be fun. "Then you would bite me to link us together." "Wouldn't that turn me?" she asked breathless, trying to control the sexual heat building inside her, Xavier's low rumble and warm caresses stoking the flames. "No, not with just one bite," he gently scraped his teeth over her pulse grinning when he heard the moan she tried to suppress and her head fell back on his shoulder. "With one bite on the night of a full moon I would create a link between us. We would be able to talk to each other telepathically. We could feel each others emotions and be able to track each other. And best of all, everyone would know that you are mine," she could feel the satisfied rumble rolling through his chest and his large sure hands sliding up over her hips and stomach to cup her breasts. "But if you were willing to change I would have to bite you at least twice more," he licked over her pulse. "Then you would become a shifter. You would be able to connect with me and the pack with the bond. We would live together until we grew old. And best of all, everyone would know you are mine!" He turned her to face him so that she could see his sincerity, "Either way, you're mine," he placed a sweet chaste kiss to the corner of her smiling mouth, "and I'm yours." Then he freed her hair from the slick ponytail and watched it tumble down past her shoulders in soft, smooth waves. He wrapped his hands in the luxurious bounty of her hair and pulled her close for a scorching hot kiss. Her lips parted immediately to welcome his tongue, inviting him to taste and be tasted. Her small hands found the hem of his shirt and quested beneath. He shivered in ecstasy when her fingers gently rubbed over his nipples and growled against her lips, ready to explode when her nails bit into his back pulling him closer. Curse dropped like anchors from his lips when a knock sounded at the door. "Everyone's waiting for you," Mina admonished with a mischievous twinkle in her eye as the door swung open. Xavier helped Jordan to her feet. "Will you come talk to me while the pack runs?" Mina asked Jordan as she straightened her skirt and fixed her hair. "I'd love to," Jordan blushed under Mina's knowing eye. Mina turned her gaze back to Xavier, "What are you still doing here? Don't keep them waiting," she said ushering him out. Xavier had no choice but to go. At the back door he looked over his pack. Some already shifted, some taking off their clothes while they waited, some grinning foolishly as the moon's lure took hold of them. His pack spread before him he turned to look at his mate. "Think about what we talked about. All this is yours now," he said gesturing to the pack and forest before them. "No matter what you choose." Then he stripped his clothes, grinned wolfishly as he caught her staring at his bare ass, and springing forward he shifted in the air. As soon as his paws hit the ground he threw his head back and howled joyfully, his heart full of pride when his pack joined him. Even the little ones gathered at the windows of the main house joined the pack song. When the last howl fell silent Xavier took off, circled his pack once then disappeared into the trees. The wind sliced through his thick fur, his paws barely hitting the forest floor as he flew, his pack at his heels. He wound his way through the trees allowing the scents of the forest to guide his feet. It was moments like this that Xavier felt closest to his pack. He could feel the joy of the pack coursing through his veins. All the stresses of life melted away with the moonshine glinting through the thick trees and the fresh scent of soil, water, all the nature that had been eradicated in the cities. Knowing his mate was waiting for him at home only made it that much sweeter. ------ The pups swarmed around Jordan when she entered the rec room, each vying for her attention. Some of the pups were in their wolf form letting out little yips of joy. She couldn't help but to fall to her knees and rub the fluffy bellies offered to her. The young pups still in their human form chattered non stop while the older ones tried to hide their interest but couldn't help but hang around the outer edge of the group. "Are you really going to be our Alpha?"one pup asked. "Are you human? I've never met a human before." "What color is your fur?" The pups fired questions quicker than she could answer. "Okay you little rugrats. Give the woman some space," Mina said pulling up a seat. Some of the pups split off to surround Mina as well. "Tell us a story," one of the pups asked and before Mina could respond they started up a chorus, happy yips, and howl of agreements to accompany the voices. Eva strolled into the room and sat beside Jordan helping her to scratch neglected bellies and lavishing her affection on the pups. "Why aren't you running with the pack?" Jordan asked, happy to see her new friend. "I thought we could talk. But these pups are just so darn cute," she said hugging a little one close. "So how about that story, Mina?" Shaking her head Mina sat back in her chair. "Okay a short story. Once when the world was young, " she began. And as though she were casting a spell the pups quieted down and became enthralled in Mina's voice. "Six young sisters planned to escape the marriages their father arranged for them. The suitors were cruel but wealthy and their father was greedy and heartless. The sisters fled into the forest in the middle of the night vowing to protect each other. But before long they were hopelessly lost. Stumbling through the forest they came to a clearing filled with serene moonlight. Lifting their faces to the full moon they prayed for help. "The Goddess, admiring the young women for their courage, summoned her greatest animals: a hawk for his great tracking abilities, a bear for his strength, a lion, tiger and panther, for their ability to hunt, and the great wolf for his cunning and sense of pack." At the mention of the wolves the pups broke out in excited howls. Jordan wished she could join in their wolf song. Mina waited patiently for them to quiet down before she continued. "The Goddess asked them for their help and they agreed. So, using her power, she gave them the ability to walk as men and sent them to the young women. The animals taught the women to hunt, fight, and survive. When the women had learned all they needed to know the Goddess returned to change the animals back to their true forms. But she found that the young women and the transformed men had fallen in love. Each man had taken one of the sister's as a mate. She couldn't bare to separate them but she knew if they were bound to human form they would suffer. So she gave them the ability to change their form at will. And because the Goddess admired the love they share she promised to bring one true mate to each of their descendants. And that is how shifters came to walk the earth." Mina finished the story with a small smile. The pups yipped and clapped and begged for another story but Mina directed them to the TV and started a movie. The children gathered blankets and pillows and piled them up before jumping into the mess. Jordan giggled, it truly was a wolf pile. "Wait till they fall asleep, they get impossibly cuter," Eva said. "Come, let's talk," Mina said, turning off the lights and escorting them to the kitchen. "We won't get a chance like this very often." Mina bustled around the kitchen pulling out mugs and setting water to boil. The empty kitchen seemed huge now that it was empty and everything was put away. "So Jordan, I couldn't help overhearing you and X in the office. Don't look so shocked, there are few secrets in a pack," Eva snorted. "You'll get used to it. Nothing stays hidden for long," Mina added placing a mug before each woman and settling in at the small table. "Chamomile, to help you relax. It must have been a stressful day for you. Now ask your questions." An exhausted huff was her only reply. The comforting warmth of the mug between her hands and fragrant steam allowed the chaos in her mind to finally quiet down. "Okay, so I pretty much jumped over the whole werewolf thing because clearly," she sighed shaking her head, "I'm just going to have to get over that. And Xavier is Alpha of this pack. That makes sense. He's too bossy and stubborn to take orders from anyone." Eva and Mina nodded allowing her to process while they enjoyed their tea. "And I can get behind the whole mate thing. I mean Xavier is . . . ," she sighed dreamily, "well he's just too sexy to be real." They women chuckled. "And if it turns out this whole thing is a crock and he finds someone else I can always kill him," she added matter of fact. "Wow the new Alpha Female is bloodthirsty!" Eva exclaimed, "I like it." "Okay, okay! That's the part I don't get," Jordan said throwing up her hands. "How does this make me Alpha Female? I mean if Xavier was the CEO of a company I wouldn't become co-CEO." "Well technically your title is Alpha Queen. Alpha Female is only the title when the Alphas are not mates," Mina clarified, Jordan just rolled her eyes. "Eva, I'm sure you are a great Alpha. Why would you want to step down?" "Let me give you a little lesson on shifter packs," Mina said. "Every wolf has a rank. Alpha, beta, theta, and omega. Omegas make up most of the pack, the average wolf. Thetas are the soldiers of the pack. Betas are the wolves with advanced skills such as fighting or tracking and some sense of leadership. And then there are the seconds usually one for each Alpha." Jordan nodded her understanding. "Now the Alpha of a pack is the strongest wolf in the pack. An Alpha doesn't have to have an Alpha female but we believe that the strongest Alpha is an Alpha pair. Mates are the embodiment of one soul in two people. So how can an Alpha be the best Alpha if he's not complete? The Goddess provides each of us with the perfect match and the perfect match for a shifter always holds the same rank as their mate." "How do you know what rank a wolf will be?" "A wolf pack is all about dominance. Every wolf starts out as an omega. If they want to move up in the pack you have to prove yourself more dominant. With most wolves it usually ends up in a fight. If a wolf of a lower rank wins the fight they take the rank of the wolf they dominate." "So how does that make me an Alpha? I don't want to fight anyone." "Because some people are born to be a theta or beta or, in this case, an alpha. It's in their being, their presence. You were born an Alpha," Mina shook her head to discourage Jordan from interrupting. "Did you see how the pack reacted to you? Most of them wouldn't look you in the eye, some who would have tried to assert their dominance were stopped with a glance." "What about the guy that I almost castrated. We wasn't repelled by my Alpha aura," Jordan argued thinking about what Xavier had said. "And yet you still took him down with a single blow," Eva laughed. "Xavier did that," "Jordan, Lance is a beta," Eva said. When she saw Jordan was still lost she added, "most omega or theta wolves wouldn't have fought him. They would have rolled over and given him their throat." Jordan just raised an eyebrow skeptically. Mina took one of Jordan's hands, "Sweetheart, you have to remember you are now part of the shifter community. We may have a human looking side but we aren't completely human." Jordan looked down into her steaming mug as though searching for clarity. "Assuming that I accepted this whole Alpha thing, I would have to become a wolf," before Mina could answer she went on, "I mean, I know technically, I could stay human but I couldn't be the best Alpha if I did. But, I don't even know if I would make a good Alpha. The pack deserves a good Alpha," Jordan slightly hysterical rambling was interrupted by a soft bump at her feet before a light brown ball of fur bounced into her lap. The pup let out a weak howl and licked her hand. The pup's wolfy grin made Jordan heart stop. "Hello there," she stroked the soft downy fur. The pup gave a happy rumble and turned onto his back. Jordan laughed in delight and scratched the wiggling pup's round belly. "Who are you?" she crooned. "That is Max," Mina said. "The only adults he like are his parents and the Alpha." "More proof," Eva added, "that you are supposed to be an Alpha." "Now you're trying too hard," Jordan snorted. "But he is precious." "When you mate with Xavier you can have one of your own," Mina said cheerfully. "Hopefully more than one." Jordan continued to stroke the pup who seemed to have fallen quickly asleep. "Do you have a mate Mina?" Stealing My Heart Ch. 07 "My Leo, is visiting his former pack. He'll be back next week," Mina said, a soft expression taking over her face. "He'll love you." "How did you know he was the one?," "I knew my mate the moment I saw his eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul." Mina fell silent giving Jordan a moment to process. "Every time I look in his green eyes, I just know he's mine," Jordan whispered. "But this all seems so fantastical. I keep thinking I'll wake up in some crappy motel and it will all have been a dream." "Well, you're lucky. Some people don't find their mate for centuries," Eva stated. Jordan smiled and patted her friends hand. "Okay, so are you sure you don't want to stay Alpha Female?," "Trust me, I can't wait to hand you the reigns so I can do what I do best," Eva said happily. Jordan raised a slender brow in question. "Kicking shifter ass!" she exclaimed all three women laughed. "Look I am just not meant to be Alpha. I took the position because it needed filling and I was the highest ranking female. I will help you with anything you need, but it is all yours." "Just give me some time. Okay?" ---- "This is Xavier's room," Mina said some time later showing Jordan to the master suite. "He'll meet you here when he comes back from his run. Jessica put fresh towel with your bags in the bathroom." Mina gave Jordan a tight hug, "I'm so happy you're with us. Sleep well." Jordan looked around the large sitting room. It was definitely a masculine room. Walls done in blue with cream accents and furniture in a deep brown. Everything was lush and rich. She couldn't help running her hand over the cool suede couch and the soft fabric of the pillows. A huge entertainment covered one wall. Flat screen TV, stereo, hundreds of DVDs and CDs neatly arrainged. It was a dream, she was sure. Leaving the sitting room she entered an impressive bedroom, a huge bed in the same rich brown. She ran her hand over the cool silk sheets but it was the french doors that called to her. The glass doors allowed the moonlight to spill in, covering everything in a silvery light. She opened the doors and walked out onto the balcony. The slightly humid night air was scented with the perfume of the climbing roses that snaked around the building. Jordan leaned on the railing, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. She could hear the howls of romping wolves in the forest beyond. "Great view," Jordan jumped turning to find her mate only wearing a pair of low slung sweats. His warm, tanned skin was absolutely delicious. His muscles rippled and flexed as he stood their allowing her to take him in with her wide hazel eyes. Jordan licked her lips trying to think of something to say but every time she tried she was distracted. "Mina said you talked," Xavier said taking a step toward her. "Umm . . . yea," "She said you were feeling better about the situation," he took another step. "Uh huh," Xavier drew his mate into his arms and captured her lips in a seductive kiss. When he let her step back she had to take a deep breath to settle herself. Turning she looked out the window at the almost full moon that called to her like a siren. It was as though music was floating to her on the silvery beams of light. Jordan closed her eyes and tilted her head back. Her arms stretched open allowing the moon to wash over her. Suddenly everything seemed to click into place. As though the moon had answered all her questions and relieved all her fears. She wanted to be with Xavier, part of the pack, no matter what it took. Slowly she began to sway to the music of moon. It called to her like nothing she'd felt before loosening her limbs and placing a serene smile on her face. It was though she was drunk on the moon. Xavier hadn't thought it was possible but Jordan looked even more beautiful in the moonlight. She swayed seductively, a slow dance that called to him. He almost felt like he could hear the music in her head. When she looked over her shoulder at him with eyes darkened in desire and licked her full lips all the blood in his brain flooded south. "You know, before tonight I never realized just how beautiful the moon is," she said her voice husky and full of seductive promises. "When you change me you have to promise me we'll make love under the moon." Xavier was so distracted by the swirl of Jordan's dress raising to show more of her toned legs he didn't quite understand her words. "Under the moon? Wait . . . when?" he whispered hoarsely. "Yes," she said pulling him out of the dark and into a patch of moonlight with her. "You'll let me change you?" he asked again in disbelief. Her hazel eyes looked up at him filled with heat, desire, and a hint of mischief. "Only if you promise to make love to me under the moon." Xavier couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had been preparing himself for this moment and now that it had arrived he was speechless. "Are you sure?" he asked and she just smiled. "Okay then, next full moon we'll do that. But tonight . . ." Xavier watched as Jordan pushed the sleeves of her dress off her shoulders letting it fall to the floor. She stepped out of her sandals and lay back on the blue silk sheets, her hair spread out around her. Xavier didn't need anymore invitation. He climbed up on the bed until he was on all fours above her. Jordan wrapped her arms around her mate pulling his large body down on hers. Their mouths melded together sending her into a blissful state of mind. Sliding her hand down his bare chest then lower to cup his very erect cock through his sweats she grinned. Xavier let out a strangled moan thrusting into her hand when she squeezed. "Oh my . . . I'm so sorry. Did I hurt you?" Jordan asked letting him go. Xavier would have laughed at her innocent expression if he hadn't been fighting the all encompassing feeling of despair at the loss of her touch. A few moments passed before Xavier could reply. "No pain. More!" Jordan grinned at his barely coherent plea. "Are you sure?" she teased. "I don't think you can take anymore. You're trembling baby, you might faint or . . ." Xavier glared at his cheeky mate, "First of all I am much too manly to faint, let alone tremble and secondly," he continued becoming very serious, "I have been dreaming of your touch for eternity. And if I tremble it is only because I want you so badly." Jordan had to catch her breath at the raw emotion in her mate's voice. She never imagined anyone could feel so strongly for her. "But maybe you're right. It's my turn to touch you." He traced a finger gently over the purple lace of her bra that covered her full firm breasts. His hand wandered down and over her belly, around her navel, and under the matching lace of her panties. "More, Xavier. I need more," it was her turn to tremble and moan reaching out to grab him. Xavier gave a low growl and grabbed her wrists. He settled himself between her thighs, groaning when she wrapped her legs about his hips and rocked against him. "Kitten, if you keep that up I won't last long," Jordan continued to writhe beneath him. "Please baby," she mewled. Xavier tried to keep it together, tried to hold on, but his wolf grabbed hold of their aroused mate's scent and with his free hand he ripped the flimsy panties from his mate's body. Jordan gave a small surprised cry and and closed her eyes enjoying the warmth of her mates body. Xavier kissed her jaw, nuzzling her smooth skin. He licked over her speeding pulse and down her collarbone. When he reached her breasts he couldn't help but stare at the perfection framed in lace. Releasing her wrists, he carefully but swiftly sliced through her bra. As the firm globes of her breast came free of the material Xavier almost drooled. "If you keep doing that I'll run out of underwear," Jordan laughed. "That's fine with me, " Xavier grinned the glow of his wolf shining in his eyes, "but if you insist, I'll buy you a new set. Cupping her breasts Xavier sucked one nipple into his mouth reveling in the sound of Jordan's pleasure filled groan. Releasing the nipple he nip and kissed the soft flesh to a harn peak before switching to the other nipple. He couldn't get enough of his mate. Her scent, her taste was almost overwhelming and yet he simply wanted more. Xavier's large calloused hands caressed her body and Jordan writhed in pleasure. The sensation of his tongue on her skin caused her pussy to clench and cream flow dampening the pants Xavier still wore. At that moment Jordan couldn't think of anything she hated more than those damn pants. Raking her nails down his muscled back she plunged her hands into his pants pushing them down till all she felt was the ecstasy of his skin against hers. Xavier kicked them the rest of the way off. His mouth never leaving Jordan's warm breasts, even as he groaned his pleasure when her small warm hands closed around his thick, pulsing cock. She hesitantly stroked his hard, ridged shaft trying to learn his body. Xavier gently pried her hands from his body barely able to stop his wolf from taking over. "Did I hurt you," Jordan asked again eyes wide innocent alarm. "No, no Kitten," Xavier said realizing how inexperienced his mate really was. "I just want you so much, I won't last if you keep that up." "Then take me," she declared. "I don't want to hurt you Sweet. My wolf and I have been waiting for so long. I want to love you slow. Take my time learning your body." Jordan grinned wrapping her arms around his neck and plunging her fingers into his hair. Leaning up she whispered, "we have forever to learn each other. But I want you now baby. Take me now." Then, following her instincts, she bite his shoulder causing Xavier to roar his pleasure. Losing control of his wolf he sank his cock into her willing tight pussy in one thrust. He stilled when his mate let out a loud cry afraid he hurt her but when she arched her back and pressed her warm breasts to his chest he was relieved. "Why'd you stop," she moaned dragging her nails down his back and clenching her inner muscles. His eye rolled back in his head as he begged his body not to betray him. The scalding hot walls of his mate's pussy surround him. When he pulled out her pussy clutched him, eager to pull him back in. "Please Xavier, please!" Nuzzling her long neck he thrust into her with excruciating slowness. He nipped at her throat and grinned when she tried to thrust her hips up to meet his cocks. He wrapped his hands around her hips and held her still so he could slowly torture her with pleasure. Though her eyes were half shut with desire her gaze was locked on the place where their bodies collided. She watched his thick cock disappear inside her body making her even wetter. Glancing up into his handsome face their eyes connected sending passion filled electricity down her spine and straight to her throbbing clit. Reaching down Xavier spread their combined juices over her clit watching as the simply touch brought her closer and closer to falling off the edge. Xavier felt the tell tale flutter of Jordans pussy and groaned. Giving her what she kept begging for he sped up his thrusts keeping his eyes locked on his trembling mate. Jordan, ready for the impending orgasm began thrusting up to meet his. Jordan let out a loud cry and exploded in ecstasy. Xavier quickly followed with a low rumbling growl. Xavier's wolf, sensing his guard was down, pushed forward. Just enough to make his fangs drop and influence him to lean forward and bite his delicious mate. Marking his mate on her right shoulder where it met her lovely slender neck. Xavier fell to the bed beside his mate who still trembled and pulled her closer. Pushing her hair out of the way he kissed the mark totally content. "I didn't hurt you did I?" he asked. Jordan gave a him a sleepy smile as she played her hands over his damp, tanned skin. "Not at all. The bite was unexpected but you can bite me anytime you want" she sighed happily. "Yea, my wolf really wanted to mark you. It won't stay cuz it's not a full moon but don't worry," he grinned running his tongue over the bite, "I will do it again." Xavier promised, his cock hardening again as she began to kiss and nibble across his chest. "Keep that up and you'll get more than you bargained for." "Give me a few more minutes and I'll accept that challenge." ***** Stealing My Heart Ch. 08 A/N: Sorry, once again my story diverted from my original plan taking more time. Please read, comment and enjoy! ***** Xavier looked down on his sleeping mate watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest. It seemed impossible that after all this time his mate was sleeping peacefully in his arms. The feel of her body against his in the morning was an amazing miracle. He traced his finger reverently along the bite he had given her the night before. Pushing her hair out of the way for a better view he furrowed his brow in confusion. The bite had already begun to heal faster than he had expected for a human. If she were shifter the mating bite would leave a distinct permanent scar but the bite to a human would have healed at a much slower rate. He shook his head and put the thought aside for another time. Jordan gave a soft snore and turned over, rubbing her smooth, sleep warmed skin along his body arousing him and readying him for another sensual round. He had taken her in so many ways before dawn broke before he finally allowed her to rest. So he held off promising himself he would have her again before the sun set. "Hey, X" Derek said speaking directly into his mind. "Felix Jackson, he called last night, is on the line for you. He sounds pissed. You want me to put him off?" Xavier cursed he'd completely forgotten about the Felix. "No," he groaned, "transfer the call up here in a few minutes." Xavier carefully extracted himself from the bed, tucking the sheets around his sleeping mate. He went to the bathroom, splashed water on his face to wake himself up, and pulled on a pair of sweats. Picking up the phone in the sitting room, he resisted the urge to hang up and return to his mate. But ignoring the Felix any longer would be irresponsible. The relationship between the cats and wolves was shaky at best. Really all the shifter species were estranged but the wolves and cats had a more active rivalry. "Jackson," "Wolf! I realize you dogs aren't very civilized but it is common courtesy to call back in a timely manner." Xavier growled barely remembering to keep his voice down so as not to rouse Jordan, "I assume you have something important to tell me, pussy cat, otherwise I'm going to back to my mate." Jackson let out an unexpected laugh. "Pussy cat?" Jackson stopped in surprise. "You better start talking before I hang up," Xavier added gruffly. Jackson huffed, "I spoke to Dean Terrance earlier about the rogue wolves terrorizing my pride. He seems to think they're yours." Xavier clenched his fists trying not to let his wolf override his mind. "Asshole," Xavier ground out angrily. "Excuse me?" Xavier could almost hear the cat hissing in anger. "Not you, Terrence, he's a complete ass and a liar. I'm going to kill that arrogant son of a bitch one day," he vowed. "I got that vibe from him too. I thought it was just cause he's a wolf." "Terrence is just trying to start trouble. These aren't my wolves," Xavier growled ignoring the insult. "They attacked my pack and my mate. I want nothing more than to take them out." "Prove it," "I have nothing to prove. Unless you're challenging my right as Alpha. Besides they are rogue you can smell it on them." "This is wolf business. . ." "Rogues are every shifters business. Don't try to pawn them off on me. How do you even know they are the same rogues that have been in our territory?" "Come on. The council has cracked down on rogues. There aren't very many left." Xavier sighed, "I'll send my lead tracker. He will be able to identify the scents that are . . ." "Are you taking this seriously? I don't need a low level pup skulking around my pride." "Zach is one of my top betas . . ." Xavier shot back angered at the insult to his pack member and friend. "I need to know you are serious. They attacked the nursery," Jackson said angrily Xavier could hear his suppressed fury. "The children!" Xavier clenched his jaw. The different shifter species may not get along but children were always protected, off limits to all violence. "I'll call the Alphas of this region. Get back to you this afternoon." "Don't have me waiting all day butt sniffer." "Yeah, yeah. Stay out of the catnip kit kat." ----- The sunlight streaming through the window warmed Jordan's skin. The silk sheet slid down below her naked, ripe breast as she stretched out wonderfully aching muscles. She frowned and opened her eyes when she realized she was alone in the massive bed. A sick feeling rolled through her stomach until she heard Xavier's voice coming from the sitting room. Climbing out of the massive bed she pulled on Xavier's discarded t-shirt and padded out to the sitting room. Jordan watched him pace around the room yelling and arguing on his cell. When he saw her he stopped and stared appreciatively at her. Barking a few more orders into the phone he hung up, his eyes never leaving her. "You look beautiful. I like you in my clothes," he breathed Jordan blushed and shrugged self consciously. "For a moment I thought you'd left me." "I'm sorry," he said going to her. He reached her in three swift strides that showed the grace of his inner wolf. Jordan tilted her face up as Xavier wrapped her in his strong arms. She gave a contented sigh when their lips met in a tender kiss. "I hate to tell you but it looks like I may have to leave you again." Jordan looked up at him and smiled. "I'm sure it's important. Don't worry I can let you go for a little while." "It might be a few days," he cringed. "Is there something wrong?" Jordan asked suddenly worried. "Those rogues we've been dealing with, it looks like they may have moved north to pride lands and attacked some kids." Jordan's eyes widen in alarm. "What kind of monsters attack kids? Baby, don't worry about me I'm fine. Go take care of your people." "The cats are not my concern. I should be here with my pack, with you." Jordan shook her head, "They may be cats but they're still your people. You're all descended from the same family. They attacked children Xavier. Some things just shouldn't be allowed. Go Xavier. I will be fine." Xavier stared down at his mate in awe, "And you say you don't have it in you to be Alpha." "Let's not go there," Jordan said rolling her eyes. "Besides, I have to settle in here and I have a shift at Henry's shop this afternoon." Jordan felt Xavier's body stiffen around her and looked up at him quizzically. "You don't think I'm going to let you go back into the city?" Jordan raised a brow in question, "What?" she asked. "You don't need to work anymore. Everything I have is yours now. I can't allow you . . ." Jordan exploded out of his arms, "what gives you the right to allow or not allow me to do anything," she hissed. "I'm protecting you . . ." "There is a fine line between protect and control! I am not your child or a member of your pack. I'm your mate, which from what I understand makes me your partner, " Xavier tried to interrupt but snapped his jaw shut when she gave him a nasty glare. "I won't be coddled or commanded," she snapped pushing her tangled mass of hair out of her face. "I suggest you reevaluate what you expect out of this relationship because if you want a useless piece of arm candy I can direct you to some of your pack members who would willingly fit that bill." Jordan stomped angrily into the bedroom slamming the door behind her. "I could have told you that was the wrong approach," Eva smirked strolling into the room. Xavier was still staring at his bedroom door trying to figure out what happened. "I was just trying to protect her," "Maybe. But as we've all been trying to explain to her, Jordan is a natural born Alpha not to mention she's been on her own her whole life. Telling her what you want her to do won't fly," Eva explained. "But she's my mate and she's human. I have to protect her," "Uh huh," Eva said with a sarcastic snort as Derek came through the door. "Michaels still refuses to go as we knew he would and Terrence is a selfish bastard. So it looks like you and Carson will be taking care of buisness with the prides. Um . . . why do you look constipated?" Derek asked choking back a laugh. Xavier loved Derek like a brother but his ability to always find amusement at Xavier's expense was going to get him strangled. "X, was just telling his mate what she was and wasn't allowed to do," Eva informed him ignoring Xavier's pointed glare. "Man, even I know that's a bad idea. The trick is to make them think it's their idea," Eva punched his arm her gaze never leaving her Alpha. "Ow, fuck," Derek tried to hide his wince. Jordan opened the door and joined the group in the sitting room, pulling her hair back in a high ponytail. "I'm going to Henry's. He hired me to do a job and I won't leave him shorthanded just because some arrogant asshole is going on a major power trip." "I won't let any of those rogues touch you," Xavier said vehemently. "I was talking about you," Jordan snarled shooting daggers at her stunned mate. Eva and Derek were both shocked and amused at Jordan's nerve. No one would dare talk to their Alpha like that. Xavier was stunned into silence. "Eva would you please show me to the kitchen just in case I have a fainting spell and need assistance in my fragile state." Jordan and Eva left the room their heads bent towards each other whispering conspiratorially. "Dude," Derek said, "flowers. I suggest lots and lots of chocolate too and groveling. Groveling is good." Xavier groaned miserably, "how am I supposed to protect her when she's so stubborn?" "Females, they're not supposed to make sense." --- "Xavier just wants to keep you safe. Ouch . . ." Eva exclaimed when Jordan hit her. "You're supposed to be on my side," Jordan said glaring at her. "I am. But the rogues targeted you. He has a right to worry. Rogues don't follow shifter law. They went after kids and attacked us for no reason. Until we catch these wolves the whole pack is on high alert." Jordan sighed. "I have no problem with that. I get it. But it's the part where he thinks he has the right to command me to follow his every word that ticks me off. However, I do owe it to Henry to be there today. He gave me a job when no one else did. He was kind and that means more to me than you realize." "Pack is all about loyalty. I understand, so lets compromise. I'll go with you," Eva put her hands up to stall Jordan's interruption, "Xavier will be appeased, you can keep your plans." Jordan mulled it over but couldn't find any fault "Okay," she acquiesced. "Also, you should think about giving up the job," Eva stalled her again. "Just until the rogue situation is taken care of. No one expects you to sit around doing nothing, but this is about safety not just for you but the entire pack. Every pack member is on alert. Anyone who could be made a target has been relocated to the compound. Like it or not Jordan, that includes you too now." Jordan gave Eva a droll stare, "Okay, okay you're right." Eva smirked, "That doesn't mean you should give X a break for his behavior," "Oh no of course not," the women laughed as the entered the kitchen where Mina bustled around making sure they were fed. ---- Xavier showered and got ready for his meeting all the while pondering how to deal with his mate. He wasn't used to having his orders questioned or flat out disobeyed. Jordan was right she was his partner but that didn't make it any easier to forego his Alpha tendencies. He found Jordan chatting in the kitchen, a sight he was happily getting used to seeing. "You better go talk to him," Mina told her gesturing to Xavier, "otherwise he's going to start whining like a lost puppy." Xavier, ignoring the well meaning jab, held out his hand. Jordan watched him over her shoulder with bright hazel eyes, her face framed by the morning sun glinting off the windows. "Thanks for breakfast Mina," Jordan said raising elegantly from her seat and putting her small hand in Xavier's calloused palm. Xavier reveled in the warmth of their connection. He could practically feel her roiling emotion. Drawing her out of the house and into the shade of the forest he led her to a small creek running through his territory. The sunlight trickled through the tree tops and glittered on the water that tripped and flowed among the rocks and pebbles that made up the creek bed. It was one of his favorite places to think and now he was excited to share it with his mate. "This place is magical," Jordan said wide eyes taking in the beauty of the natural setting. "I've never seen anything like it beyond what's on TV. I've always lived in cities." "It's one of my favorite places. But it's not as beautiful as you," he said enjoying her sense of wonder. Jordan rolled her eyes as she turned to face him, "Is this your way of making it up to me? Cuz, it's kinda cheesy," she snorted. "It's true," Xavier insisted, "but you're right. I owe you an apology. I can't promise that I won't give you orders in the future but I promise that I will include you in the decision making process when the matter concerns you." "Concerns us," she corrected. Xavier bowed his head in agreement, "Us," he liked the way that sounded. "So about the whole job thing . . ." "Eva came up with a compromise. She will escort me to my shift at Henry's shop. It's only a few hours and after I will tell him that I have to postpone any more shifts until the area is deemed safe." Xavier wanted to argue she didn't need the job anymore but he had to check himself. He would tackle that mountain later, "Eva and Tomas." He held up his hand to stop her interruption, "Please, you mean more to me than you'll ever know. Compromise, remember." Jordan was silent for a moment before nodding in agreement, "Fine." "And," Jordan raised her eyebrows giving him a warning for caution. Xavier just smiled and went on, "You will take my credit card and go buy yourself everything you need." "I'm good I have everything I need," Jordan said honestly. "Come on, I'm not trying to be condescending," he defended himself, "but everything you have is in that backpack. If you're going to make this your home I want you to really make it . . . ours." "I don't need much," Jordan protested, "I've lived my life knowing it was better not to become attached to things. Everything can be taken from you. So material things don't really matter to me," she said simply with a small shrug. "Okay, then do it for me," Xavier countered sadden by the reality of her lonely life but hoping to wipe away her memory of those feelings. "I want to give you the world, this way it will be easiest to get the things you like. Besides," he said pulling her up against his body to whisper seductively in her ear, "you can buy more of those pretty lace underwear your were wearing last night. You know, just in case my wolf gets frisky and tears them off you." Jordan shivered at the promise of pleasure in his voice and Xavier could have sworn he felt it run through him as well. Jordan reluctantly agreed but he intended to tell Eva to make sure. "Now," Xavier said with a mischievous glint in his eye, "don't you want to apologize for not listening and heeding my orders." Jordan lifted on her toes to plant a firm kiss on his lips followed by a sharp nip. "I promise to question and disobey every order you give me," she said with a flippant smile before turning and flouncing back toward the house. A slow grin spread across Xavier's face as he watched her go, "Cheeky Kitten, come back here." Jordan's laugh filtered through the forest like a bird's song. "Well hurry up slowpoke." Xavier caught up to her taking her hand. Arm in arm they slowly made their way back to the house discussing their plans for the day. --- "Shopping spree!" Eva shouted excitedly grabbing Xavier's wallet out of his hand and pulling out cash and credit cards. "We're going to have so much fun. We'll get clothes, shoes, lots of shoes, and accessories. Every girl needs accessories." Jordan hid behind Xavier in mock fear, "Xavier, what kind of monster have you created?" Xavier just shook his head. "She'll calm down . . . eventually . . . maybe." "Did I mention the shoes? I know the cutest little boutique that has the most amazing shoe collection," she rattled on. "And we don't even have to stick to the sale aisle cuz X is footing the bill! It's going to be great." "I never pegged you for the girly fashionista type," Jordan laughed. "I may be one of the top fighters in the pack and I'm not one of those girls that has to be covered in so many name brand that they become a walk advertisement but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate a nice pair of LV patent leather pumps." "Wow, shopping with Eva. That's a scary thought," Tomas joked as he and the goons joined the three near the cars. "Well now it will be your reality. Tomas, you're going with them." Xavier said opening the passenger side door for Jordan to climb in. "Am I being punished?" Tomas asked his face contorted in pain while the Derek howled with laughter. "Come on Tomas, I'll protect you," Jordan smiled. "But if she does anything embarrassing I'm denying I know the two of you." "Ditto," Tomas said. "I'm driving," Tomas said taking the keys from the omega who'd pulled the car up. Eva snorted and snatched the keys from his fingers, "You may be a genius when it comes to computers but I refuse to get in the car with you behind the wheel." She climbed into the car and turned to Jordan sitting beside her. "Trust me, don't ever let Tomas drive unless it's a life or death situation. He drives like a drunken blind race car driver." "That is a gross exaggeration," Tomas insisted as he moodily got in the back seat. "Be safe," Xavier said ignoring the riffraff and placed a chaste kiss on his mates sweet mouth. Silently he added to Eva and Tomas, "Keep your eyes open and call me the second anything happens." The betas sent back their promise to protect his heart and took off down the drive. ------ "Now your shift doesn't start until 1 o'clock so we've got a few hours to cover the mall. After your shift we can hit the rest of Main Street for the smaller shops," Eva said pulling into the parking lot. Tomas and Eva surveilled the packed lot before letting Jordan out of the car and entering the loud 2 story building. Jordan couldn't help but size up the crowd as Eva led her to the first shop. It was second nature for her to cast her gaze around the mall looking for easy marks. There was a group of rowdy teenager. A woman wearing expensive clothes had a loose grip on her shiny handbag, an easy grab. She could use the teenagers as a distraction. One of the kiosk vendors was too busy texting to keep an eye on her open register. Another would be easy pickings with a smile and a little flirting. On a good day in a mall she could make a small fortune without ever actually stepping into a store. Usually registers in stores were to closely watched to actually get away with stealing cash and anything else worth stealing had too many anti-theft devices to be worth the risk. Jordan almost resisted when Eva dragged her into the first store before she remembered she really was there to shop. "Don't give me that look," Eva exclaimed misinterpreting Jordan's response, "I will make this as painless as possible." Jordan hesitantly viewed the racks of clothes more used to the old comforting smell of thrift shops. She nearly choked when she looked at the price tags of a top that caught her eye. "I'm sorry is that price considered reasonable?" she whispered to Tomas who hung back with her as Eva bounced around arms full of colorful lacy items. Tomas shook his head, "I don't think it's supposed to make sense." Stealing My Heart Ch. 08 "At thrift store we could get a few whole outfits and still have money left over for pizza and beer," Tomas gave her a sly grin, "Nice, if Xavier wasn't one of my best friends I might try to steal you from him." "Sorry T, but you'd fail miserably." Eva rushed over, her cheeks flushed with excitement, and shoved a pile of clothes in Jordan's arms before leading her into a changing room. "This will be fun," she promised. Jordan stood frozen in the small cubicle facing the mirror. She'd always wondered what it would be like to go shopping like she saw the girls on TV. Hanging the clothes on the door, she looked at the items the Eva had chosen for her and ran her hand over the silky material. The clothes were beautiful, some of them she thought were just plain ridiculous but right when she decided to put those items aside Eva's voice drifted over the changing room "Try them all on," she ordered "even if you don't think you'll like it!" Taking a deep breath Jordan chose an outfit and began her ordeal. --- Hours and many stores later Jordan found herself sighing in delight as she closed the lid on a box of a pair of beautiful blue heels. "Okay, you were right. Shoes are the best part of any outfit," she admitted. Eva swiped Xavier's credit card and took the bag the cashier hand her. "Oh and the best part about shopping with a man," she said with a smile before shoving the bag into Tomas over loaded arms, "you have someone to carry all the bags." "I'm supposed to be on guard not a baggage carrier," Tomas grumbled. "Be a good boy and maybe we'll get you some ice cream," Eva crooned and patted his cheek. Jordan tried and failed to hold back her laughter. "Stop teasing him Eva. He has been extremely patient. Especially, with that sweet old woman who needed help choosing the right lingerie set" Tomas groaned as the women folded over with laughter. "Laugh all you want now but I will make you pay. Both of you!" They finally left the mall, Tomas sulking as he stashed the bags in the trunk and climbed into the back seat. Henry's shop was a short trip through the city, but finding parking for the giant SUV proved a near impossible task. Jordan offered to go to the store while they waited for parking but Tomas and Eva admittedly refused. The overhead bell rang merrily as the group entered the store. Eva first, followed by Jordan, Tomas bringing up the rear. The shop was empty save for the old shopkeeper. Henry looked up from the glass counter a warm smile brightened his eyes and crinkling his laugh lines. "So my dear child, you've finally taken your place as Alpha. I'm so proud of you," the three paused in confusion and shock as Henry bowed his head and grinned. Jordan blinked in confusion her head swinging from Henry, to Eva, and Tomas and back again. She was sure she missed something. "Um, did you tell Henry?" she asked. Snapping out of their surprise with Jordan's question Tomas ushered her the rest of the way into the store, locking the door behind himself. Eva rushed up to the counter bracing her hands on the glass and growling at the unfazed old man. "What do you want with her?" Eva said using her best intimidating Beta face. Henry just continued to grin. "Believe me dear wolf I wish Jordan and your pack nothing but happiness." Eva frowned she sensed no ill will from the man but there was something she was missing. Henry continued, "Jordan has a bright future ahead of her and she will make a huge difference in the world." Jordan joined them at the counter while Tomas checked the store for any threats. She laid a gentle hand on Eva's arm, silently urging her to calm down. "Henry, what are you talking about? How did you know about the whole Alpha thing? Are you a shifter?" Henry patted her hand halting her barrage of questions. "No I am not a shifter. You can tell your betas to stand down, I mean you no harm. I am an oracle and I wouldn't be a very good one if I couldn't spot a shifter. Especially one as powerful as your mate," he winked An audible gasp came from Eva and Tomas while Jordan just blinked in confusion. "Oracle? What does that mean exactly?" Jordan asked hesitantly. Henry smiled brightly and took her hand comfortingly in his. "It means, dear child, that I knew you were special the moment you walked into my shop. As an oracle I can see people for who they truly are. No matter how they try to hide the truth. On occasion the goddess allows me to see one's past, present, or future. I saw your future Jordan and your strength will bring about major change in our world." Jordan stared at Henry with confusion and wonder etched across her face, too stunned to speak. Turning to Eva and Tomas, Henry added "keep her safe but know you can't prevent what will happen. It's her destiny." Shaking off the shock of her confession Eva watched Henry intently. He didn't seem to wish any harm on her Alpha , and oracles were known for their gentle nature, but she didn't want to take any chances. "What will happened?" Eva inquired. Henry's ever present smile wavered for a second before he shook his head. "I am truly sorry but I'm afraid I can't tell you now. It could ruin everything." Tomas growled indignantly, his eyes flashing. "What do you mean you can't tell us? You threaten our Alpha and then expect us to just walk away?" Jordan turned to Tomas putting her hands up to ease the tension and help let go of the anger. "Tomas," she said sternly, "Henry means me no harm. Be calm," she ordered giving his arm a small squeeze. Immediately Tomas backed down yielding to his Alpha. Jordan was barely aware of her effect on him. She waited a moment to make sure her orders were followed before turning back to study her boss. She didn't know why but she felt at peace with Henry's revelation. She trusted she would sense if Henry lied to her. "I don't suppose you could tell me when to expect this traumatic event?" Jordan asked. Henry closed his eyes for a moment, "fairly soon." "Xavier will want to speak with you," Eva said. "I can't tell him anymore than I have told you already." Henry shook his head apologetically, "but if he wishes to talk, I will be right here." With a smile he walked around to the other side of the counter. "Take her home. I have the shop covered today." Sensing this was all he would say on the matter Jordan sighed. "Well I hope you don't think you're getting rid of me that easily. I may be taking a break from working here but I'm coming back and we're going to finish this old man." Jordan smiled trying to relieve the tension in the room. "I should hope so. We will have much to discuss very soon," Henry chuckled, "and don't worry about me I can manage the shop." "Ha! You may see the future but you couldn't carry one of those boxes more than two feet." Henry gasped in mock offense and held up his scrawny arms. "I'm stronger than you think young lady." "I guess we all have our own delusions," she smiled warmly at Henry before kissing his wrinkled cheek. "Good bye," Henry called as the betas escorted Jordan out of the shop. "Who would have thought? An oracle right here in our city!" Tomas said in wonder. --- Xavier was hiding in his office, head on his desk, trying control his frustration. Meeting with the Alphas had been beyond useless. Michael's hadn't even bothered to show up, sending one of his beta's to deliver his refusal to get involved. Terrence spent the time whining and making excuses. In the end he and Isaiah had used the time to conference call the Felixes and make travel plans. They had decided to track down the rogues as a unit, pooling both feline and wolf resources. If they were unable the council would have to be notified. The council would hold both the packs and prides responsible if they let the problem spread outside their jurisdiction. He was just beginning to get his thoughts in order when he was suddenly filled with intense feelings of shock and curiosity with a touch of fear. Xavier shot up in his chair. It took a moment for him to realize these weren't his emotions. They were flooding in along the fragile bond building between he and his mate. The bond should not even have existed yet given that Jordan was still human. But throughout the day he had been sensing hints of the mate bond connecting him to his mate. Awareness of his mate came to him in slight flashes letting him know she was okay. To be getting this heavy flow meant Jordan had to be having intense reactions to whatever was happening. Xavier rushed out of his office in a panic. Cell phone already at his ear by the time he reached the car. "Eva what's going on? Is Jordan okay? Where are you?" he blurted. "Xavier breathe . . ." Jordan grabbed the phone from the beta. "Xavier," she snapped. "I'm just fine. We're on our way back. I'll see you soon," she said trying to calm her growling mate. "I can sense you Jordan. Something is wrong. I felt your fear," Xavier's knuckles turning white as he clutched the steering wheel of the idling car. "Sense me?" Jordan shook her deciding to let that go for the moment. Calming Xavier down was the more important task at hand. "It was just a bit of shock. I promise. I'm fine." "Where are you? I'll come to you," he said hastily. Jordan smiled a bubble of warmth blossoming in her chest. She couldn't help the silly giggle in her voice. She felt like a little girl who just received the present of a life time. "Xavier, I promise. Everything is fine. We're leaving the city now. Bye." Eva and Tomas stared at her in shock. "Did you just hang up on the Alpha?" Tomas asked, his brown eyes wide. "What?" Jordan said with an innocent shrug. "It's so sweet of him to worry but I can't allow him to fuss over me every time he gets a feeling. Bad habits are hard to break. He'll be okay." Tomas turned to Eva in the drivers seat, "When we get there. We let her out first and use her as a shield. Xavier won't attack us through her." "Agreed," Eva nodded. -- Xavier left the car and ran to the driveway, wolves scattering to avoid him. Clenching his fists and grinding his teeth he stood sentinel, his senses open for the first sign of his mate's approach. --- Dean could barely contain his glee, everything was going according to plan. Cambridge and his ally were leaving. Michaels refused to get involved despite the apparent threat. It was perfect. The Cambridge compound would be vulnerable and with Delia's assistance there was no way he could fail. "Hey baby," Delia crooned as she sauntered over followed by his betas. Dean brushed off Delia's overt advances and ignored her annoyed shriek, "I need you back at the Cambridge compound." "But I want -" "And tell Simon I want to see him now," he interrupted her waving her off. Grumbling she stomped out to the yard to send Simon in. "Why the long face Beautiful?" Simon asked as she approached him. "The stupid Alpha doesn't appreciate me. After all I've done for him," she pouted prettily. "If I had a girl like you," Simon breathed in her ear flirtatiously, stroking her smooth, rosy cheek, "I would treat you like you deserve." "Well he's going to make me Alpha Queen," Delia said proudly flinging her golden hair off her shoulder. "Do you see how he treats you? Do you really believe he will keep his promises" Delia's confidence waivered. "Support me," Simon coaxed her "and I will give you everything you want and more." "How do I know you're not just trying to use me too?" Delia pouted poking Simon in the chest with a manicured finger. "If I don't keep my word you could always go back to Terrence," he said offhand. "But if you choose me all your dreams will be achieved." Delia's eyes sparkled with greed. "What do you plan on doing?" "I will let Terrence go on with is plans. Once he has secured both packs my men and I will strike. We have gained most of his betas for our side. I just need my queen," he took her hand and bowing over it with a salacious grin and kissed her gently, looking into her gleaming blue eyes. "Fine, what do you want me to do?" she asked eagerly. "Just continue as you are. Do as Terrence asks and be ready for when I give my signal." He sent her a heated wink before he briskly turned and headed towards the house. Ambitious and dumb. It was almost to easy, Simon thought. He had no intention of sharing power with some wanton bimbo but using her to get what he wanted was a good choice. He was slowly garnering more support from Terrence's betas who were getting tired of his leadership. Soon, he would have them all. Or at least enough to take out any holdouts. Soon he would have everything he wanted and he wouldn't let anyone stand in his way. ---- Dean looked up as Simon casually strolled into his study. The guy irritated him to no end but he was necessary to complete his final goal. He had his betas watching Simon closely but they reported no dissent. "Finally youre here. I've been waiting." "Are you actually going to tell us your plan now or have you still not figured it out," Simon sneered. "Shut up and I'll tell you," Terrence snarled as Simon dropped down on the couch and kicked his feet up on the low coffee table. "In two days we strike," he announced. "Cambridge will be gone and unable to interfere. Delia will lure his new bitch out of the compound where Chuck will be waiting in ambush. When we spread out looking for the girl we attack. Taking out their soldiers and taking over the compound and the pack." Terrence finished his arms stretched out in triumph and a smirk. When there was no response he lowered his arms with a glare. "Uh . . . won't Cambridge come back and stop us?" Alan asked dispelling the silence. "That's the beauty of the plan," he huffed irritated that they couldn't see his genius. "In two days Xavier and the cats will be so distracted with their fighting and another attack by the 'rogues' the won't get the news until it's too late to stop me." "But eventually he will come back. He won't just let us have his pack," Simon pointed out laughing internally knowing Dean's plans would fail. "Yea and Cambridge is big . . . really big. Won't he crush you?" another beta asked nervously. For most the very idea of taking on Xavier was inconceivable. "You idiots," Dean snarled, back handing the beta who spoke up. "I have thought of everything. Not only will he hand over his pack he will do it without a fight." "How do you figure that?" Chuck asked skeptically. "We will have his mate and if he refuses we will kill her," he explained frustrated with his dim witted pack. "Why not just go to him with the Alpha challenge," Simon asked. According to shifter law anyone could challenge an Alpha and naturally if the reigning Alpha lost he forfeit his pack to the winner. But Simon doubted Dean Terrence would last very long against Xavier Cambridge. "Because with his mate's life in our hands he will essentially let me kill him just to free her," he grumbled annoyed with his pack questioning him." "But what about . . ." "Enough Terrence growled. "I have waited too long for this chance. I have planned everything. Just be ready when the time comes. Now go. You have preparations to make," huffed indignantly. Needing to calm down he was about to call Delia for a quick fuck but he remembered he had already sent her away. Annoyed, he settled on the chair and closed his eyes. He imagined Xavier's face while he tortured his mate before his eyes. He imagined how good it would feel when he broke the man's spirit and made him bleed. The thought of Xavier kneeling before him brought a grin to his face Terrence knew his revenge was coming soon. He couldn't fail and he couldn't wait. --- Jordan got out of the car when Eva stopped at the end of the driveway where the Alpha stood looking ready to kill something or someone. "We'll meet you at the house," she grinned at Eva and Tomas and let out a soft chuckle when Eva zoomed off to the garage before the door could fully close. "I told you it was dangerous," Xavier grabbed Jordan by the shoulders resisting the urge to shake her as her smile grew wider. "Is this amusing to you?" he growled in dismay. Jordan reached up and stroked his cheek. "You have no idea how much it means to me that you care enough to worry about me." "Woman, of course I'm worried you're my mate . . ." Jordan put up a staying hand. "I'm fine. Look at me Xavier, just look." Xavier's eyes roamed his mate's petite body finding nothing wrong. Taking a step back he ran a shaky hand through his hair. Jordan was fine but he was losing his mind. Ever since she came into his life, Xavier had changed. Mina had pointed out numerous times how much more open he was and he noticed how the pack seemed warmer towards him. He realized how over time he had closed himself off from his pack. He had been a good Alpha but his loneliness had caused him to draw away from them. Even though it had been such a short time since they had met he found himself fearing to lose her and falling back into the dark pit. Embarrassed he looked down at his mate and let out a long sigh. "So you want to tell me what happened?" "Turns out my old employer is an oracle. And he approves of you." For the second time that day he found himself gawking at his mate as she walked away from him. --- He knew it was illogical but hearing his beta's recounting of their encounter with the oracle had his wolf's hackles up. Xavier's anger was almost palpable. Finally, Xavier lost control of his wolf. "You were supposed to bring me any threat's!" his face contorted in anger as he lunged for Tomas. Xavier grabbed his collar and shoved him into the bookshelf. Tomas threw his hands up to shield himself from the falling hardbound books but knew better than to rise from the floor. Xavier would have seen it as a challenge and killed him. Xavier was about to grab for Tomas again when a Jordan's clear voice rang out behind him. "Xavier stop!" Jordan's dark hair framed her shocked face emphasizing her reddened cheeks and hazel eyes. Xavier turned to gaze at his mate. His wolf rumbling in admiration and appreciation of the authority and power radiating off the small, fierce woman. His chest puffed out in pride for choosing such a natural Alpha for his mate. Jordan stared down her mate as she crossed the room. "We already talked about this. I wasn't about to have them drag Henry down her like a criminal." She knelt beside Tomas making sure he was okay causing a low growl to escape Xavier's throat. Jordan's head whipped around staring daggers at her mate. "Calm down or I swear I'll go back to the city. I'm just making sure he's alright." The serious, reproachful look in Jordan's eyes had Xavier swallowing his next growl. He wasn't willing to chance that she wasn't bluffing. Jordan made sure Tomas would be okay while he tried to communicate to his Alpha that he was no threat and definitely had no desire to steal his mate. When she was assured Tomas would live and helped him to his feet she led Xavier to his chair. Sitting in his lap comforting her mate and preventing anymore outbursts. Xavier nodded apologetically to Tomas and Eva, who had stayed out of the way during the altercation, and gestured for them to take a seat. Derek stepped into the office after a brief knock. "Everything is ready for our flight. Carson will meet us at the airport." Jordan turned on her mate's lap, "Where are you going?" Xavier sighed wearily and rubbed his face before telling catching everyone up on the Alpha's meeting. "In light of this new information, I better let Carson know he's on his own." "What are you talking about?" Jordan asked. "Well if the oracle is right, there is no way I'm leaving you here by yourself." Stealing My Heart Ch. 08 "Oracle?" Derek mouthed to Tomas with raised eyebrows. Tomas nodded excitedly. "This pack needs you at that meeting," Jordan demanded, "and I'm not by myself," she insisted. "But -" "You know I'm right. The safety of this pack is more important than me. You'll never forgive yourself if something happens that could have been prevented with one meeting." Both Xavier and Jordan were surprised by the conviction evident in her words. Xavier was a little ashamed that he'd forgotten his duty to the pack so readily but proud that his mate was obviously strong and clearly his equal. Jordan was surprised at the depth of feeling and loyalty she felt towards the pack in such a short time. While some of the pack was skeptical most welcomed her warmly. Xavier had given her the family she always wanted and she loved them because he loved them. Even though she didn't want to be separated from her mate the pack needed him so she would be strong. "I'll be fine," Jordan reassured him for the millionth time that day as he nuzzled her neck affectionately. The couple was brought back to attention by the betas who they'd forgotten who openly joked as their tough Alpha succumbing once again to the tiny woman. Jordan covered her burning cheeks at their good natured jabs. "Derek tell Zach he's going with me. You stay here and watch my mate," Derek nodded there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for his friend. With the decision made the group started making plans. There was no guarantee that what the oracle foretold would come to pass while Xavier and his beta were away but they were taking no chances. Because the Felixes wanted as few wolves as possible in their territory Xavier and Isaiah Carson needed the strongest pack mates with them. Meaning they were both expected to bring their seconds Derek and Isaiah's son Carl. Bring a lower ranked beta might insult the Felixes, they might think Xavier didn't see them as a real power. But Derek was his absolute best fighter. He would protect his heart. He and the rest of the betas would be able to keep both Jordan and the rest of the pack safe from any lingering rogues. Zach was just as trusted and he could watch Xavier's back as well as Derek. Round the clock patrols would continue and Jordan reluctantly agreed to stay in the compound until Xavier's return. Derek, Tomas, and Eva left to inform Zach and the rest of the betas of their new schedules and duties while the couple went up to their rooms. Bags and clothes from Eva and Jordan's shopping spree were stacked in the sitting room. The room was filled with color from the decorative bags and tissue paper. Jordan smiled remembering how much unexpected fun she had with Eva. It was a memory she would always cherish. "I should have never let Eva go shopping," Xavier sighed, shaking his head in amusement. "It was actually fun. Besides you won't mind when I show you the things we bought," Jordan said with a sly smile, gliding her fingers over a small pink bag. She saw his eyes darken with lust and skipped away into the bedroom. Xavier's body finally caught up with his erotic thoughts and deliberately stalked after his teasing mate. "What kinds of things?" Xavier said barely holding back his salivating wolf. Strong yet small arms wrapped around him as she tipped her head back to stare into his dark emerald eyes. "You'll just have to wait until you return," she taunted in a low whisper before disentangling herself from his arms. "Besides, you have so little time to pack. I wouldn't want to distract you." Xavier took off. He disappeared into the walk in closet, the doors swinging violently. When she peeked in after him he was whirling around grabbing clothes and stuffing them into a duffle haphazardly. Speeding out of the closet he tore the bathroom door open and threw a few things on top of the bundle before zipping the bag and tossing it towards the door. "Done!" he puffed training his eyes on his bewildered mate. Before she knew it Jordan was caught up in Xavier's arms, pressed tightly to his hard warm chest. She barely had time to take a breath when Xavier's lips covered hers. The kiss was deep and filled with longing as Jordan snaked her arms around his neck, tangling her fingers in his soft hair. Xavier dipped his tongue into her mouth, her hot sweet taste sending fire shooting through his veins and tightening his muscles. His arms crushing the petite woman until a short gasp slipped past her lips. The sound startled Xavier out of his needy haze. He loosened his grip to release her but Jordan clung to him even tighter. She was drunk on his scent and the and the warmth radiating off his skin. Part of her wondered how she could have come to need this man in such a short time but she pushed the thought away her passion rising in her mate's arms. Relieved with her response Xavier's desire quickly rose to match his feisty mate. His hand drifted down to grasp her firm, round ass, and dragged her up his taut body. His grasp tightened when she eagerly leapt up to wrap her thighs around him and let out a low moan of pleasure. Realizing he wasn't going to make it across the spacious room to the bed Xavier gently placed her delicious armful on the closest surface. Things hit the carpet with a soft thump in the frantic race to divest each other of the clothes that separated their heated naked skin. Shirts flung hastily across the room followed by the remains of Jordan's bra. Xavier bent down to capture her straining, puckered nipples in his mouth but let out a strangled sound when Jordan pushed him back. "Sorry baby, but I need you now," she whispered breathlessly, yanking at the fly of his dark jeans. Jordan had never experienced such a sudden burning desire. Her need for her body to be filled by her mate was intense, causing her hands to shake. Xavier froze when could finally comprehend Jordan's passion laced words. Her desire for him thrilled and pleased him to no end. Small hands brushed achingly close to his cock to pull his pants roughly down his legs and wakening him from his stupor. "I will give you anything you could ever desire if you say that again," Xavier confessed sincerely. Jordan looked seductively up at him through dark lowered lashes, a small smirk playing on her lips. "I need you Xavier," she whispered as she pressed her soft unbound breasts against him."I need you now," she moaned. As if struck by lightening Xavier ripped off Jordan's jeans and panties simultaneously tossing them to the floor. He pulled her smooth lithe legs apart encouraging her to wrap them around his hips once again. He looked down into her lovely hazel eyes as she placed her hands back on bureau to brace herself her breast lifting up to him. "Mine!" Xavier growled, his wolf fighting to surface as he bent to take her left nipple into his mouth and drove his straining cock into her wet heat. Jordan cried out in ecstasy at the sudden joining of their bodies. Tears slid down her face as Xavier's fast driving pace both heightened and relieved her need for the man filling her so entirely. His body shook, his head went back as he grasped his mate's hips drawing her forward thrusting in hard even strokes. Xavier knew he wouldn't last long with Jordan's wet sheath squeezing him so tightly. Looking down his gaze wandered over his mate's alluring and receptive form. Her back arched, head thrown back, neck exposed in submission, her long chocolate hair pooling on the dresser she was perched so prettily on. He tugged gently on her thighs urging her to hang on. He leaned forward, his lips traveled along her neck and collarbone, kissing and nibbling at her soft skin. He braced one hand on the bureau alongside his mate's, the other tucked between their bodies massaging her sensitive clit. His fingers were slick with their combined juices as he rubbed her in increasingly smaller circles. Jordan's trembling moans mingled with Xavier's deep growls of satisfaction. The walls of Jordan's tight pussy pulsed quickly heralding her rapidly approaching climax. Xavier groaned in relief and picked up his pace, scraping softly over her clit adding to her pleasure. His bellow rang out barely a second after Jordan's bright cry while their bodies shook with their final release. Xavier collapsed forward bracing his hands on the bureau behind his panting mate as she clung to his heaving shoulders. Both bodies shivered as the sweat cooled on their heated skin. As Jordan's grip weakened Xavier finally got his body under control. Using one hand he yanked up his jeans and while the other to scooped up his dozing mate. He carried her across the room and gently deposited her on their massive bed. Hurrying to the bathroom he grabbed a towel and tenderly cleaned their combined juices from her soft skin. He brushed her long brown hair back from her lovely face and wrapped a light blanket around her. Heart swelling with love and tenderness as he gazed down at her. Her unique beauty had him spellbound, he had no idea how long he watched her before Zach interrupted his reverie. "Everything is ready," Zach reached out to his Alpha using their bond. He knew exactly what his Alphas were up to and knew better than to actually go to their door.Zach remembered what is was like when he first met his mate. Being apart for any amount of time seemed impossibly torturous. Xavier sighed regretfully. "I guess I really am going to have to wait for your surprise." Jordan let out a weak chuckle. "I love you," he whispered and tenderly kissed his mate's forehead. Taking one last look and he turned to walk away when he felt Jordan's small hand close weakly around his fingers. "I love you too," she replied with a warm smile, her eyes to heavy to open. Anxiety threatened at the thought of leaving his mate but he forced it down and kept walking. Derek and his three top betas awaited him by the car. "Did you enjoy your goodbye?" Derek smirked leaning on the hood of the car. Xavier tossed him a withering look that would have cowed a lesser man. But his best friend just smiled and tossed him the keys. "Everything is settled. The flight will take about 3 hours. We'll meet with the Felixes in the morning. If all goes we'll we will be back the following day.The pack is on guard." Derek's usual laughing smile turned uncharacteristically serious, "she will be just fine." Derek was always a wise ass, cracking jokes, and a wide smile for everyone. Xavier couldn't count the times he had wanted to strangle the obnoxious wolf. But in the end Derek was a fierce warrior, loyal, and dependable. Derek always had his back and he appreciated that more than anything. Eva, Tomas, and Zach echoed Derek's promise Xavier nodded in gratitude, threw his bag in the back of the SUV, and climbed behind the wheel. When Zach climbed in beside him Xavier was happy for Zach's calm demeanor, unlike Derek's well meaning pestering, Zach would give him the peace he needed during this trip ----- Warm rays of sunlight bathed Jordan in comfort. A muffled rustling made her sit up rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "Oh good! You're awake," a petite omega with wide brown eyes and unruly red curls came to the edge of the bed. "I have some clean clothes set out for you and a bath awaits my Alpha," she said bouncing happily and bowing her head respectfully. "Um . . . thank you," Jordan sat up hugging the blanket to her naked body. "I'm so sorry but I don't remember your name." "It's Jessica my Alpha. I take care of the housekeeping on this floor." "Nice to meet you Jessica, I'm Jordan." "Yes, I know Alpha," she giggled. "Eva told me to draw you a bath because the Alpha had probably given you a wild ride before he left. I mean you did sleep all evening and it's well into the morning now," Jessica exclaimed her giggling increasing when she noticed the deep blush of embarrassment creep into Jordan's cheeks. "Oh my goddess. I'm so sorry. Sometimes I forget to think before I speak," she said, her bubbly smile not wavering for a second. "It's okay," Jordan said warming to the effervescent omega. "And a bath would be wonderful," she added sincerely. Sliding her legs off the bed Jordan wrapped the sheet securely about her body. Stretching her shaky limbs she felt the pleasing ache that she was coming to recognize. "Of course my Alpha," Jessica said with a polite nod. "You can call me Jordan." Being referred to as Alpha and the bowing were unnerving. People had rarely shown her any respect if they even noticed her. Jordan doubted that she would ever get used to the new position. "When you're done Mina said to meet her in the kitchen . . . Alpha Jordan," Jessica smiled cheekily. "Well," Jordan laughed, "I guess we can work on that later. Thanks again Jessica." Jessica gave her a bright warm smile and another nod, before she skipped from the room. ----- "There you are!" Mina exclaimed bustling over to Jordan as she entered the homey kitchen. "Come, come. You missed dinner but I'll be damned if you starve on my watch," she said guiding Jordan to the table and dropping a heavily laden plate before her. Jordan was about to protest but Mina watched her expectantly until she picked up the fork and began to eat. As the first bite passed her lips Jordan's hunger flared to life. Before she knew it she was licking the last drops of syrup from her empty plate. Looking up she found herself surrounded by chuckling women. "Five bucks she eats the plate," Taryn said with a straight face. "We really should stop her," Clara laughed making a grab for the plate. Jordan let the female pry it from her fingers, "I promise I'm no threat to the tableware. I just don't think I've ever had such a delicious breakfast before." "Well stick around child," Mina said waving the women back to their chores. "I'll make sure you're fed properly." Mina cupped Jordan's cheek affectionately. Mina couldn't help it. She could see the goodness in the woman Xavier had taken as his mate and she couldn't help but be protective of the her. During her long life she had learned to see a person's true nature more easily. She could see Jordan's kind yet emotionally scarred heart. She had never had a child of her own but she always saw Xavier as her's and now she had Jordan. Jordan had never had a mother but Mina was determined to fill that aching void in her life. "Jordan," Eva said coming into the room," I wanted to give you a proper tour of your new home." Jordan rose thanking Mina profusely but Mina waved her gratitude off but secured her promise to be back for lunch. Eva steered Jordan out into the sunlight. They started at the medical building to meet Luke the pack healer. They visited the nursery, storehouses, workshops, and even the surveillance building. Everywhere they went Eva watched as Jordan charmed the pack. In medical Jordan comforted the few pack members Luke was seeing to. There was a pup with a broken arm who she distracted and entertained as Luke set the bone. She also calmed and comforted his anxious parents. Mara, who was having a difficult pregnancy, gushed cheerfully as she chatted with Jordan all about the nursery she was setting up and the names her and her mate were considering. Jordan didn't seem to realize how she was already bonding with the pack. "She's amazing," Luke told Eva as they watched from the doorway. Luke had been the pack healer even before Xavier's father had been Alpha. He'd seen three different Alpha Queens come and go but there was something almost magical about Jordan. Some females slowly became Alphas but even as a human Jordan was already an Alpha and the pack couldn't help but respond. Lenora smiled at Jordan as they entered the nursery but before she could welcome her the pups surrounded her. Terra, Lenora and Zach's daughter, bragged that she was already friends with the new Alpha. The other women were cautious for the pups sake but quickly warmed to her as soon as they saw her obvious love and tenderness for the pups. Everywhere they went Jordan showed interest in even the most mundane of chores giving no regard for rank. Everyone from omegas to betas received the same warmth and respect. She wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty in the gardens, or helping organize the store rooms, she even got her clothes covered in car grease helping the garage attendants fix a stalled engine. She never complained and Eva had to almost drag her away from each place to continue the tour. Every once in a while a pack member looked down at the tiny woman with a open disdain. But Jordan took it all in stride. Jordan never backed down from the harsh looks and barbed insults with admiral grace and poise but she also never engaged them. She seemed to be emanating a sense of calm everywhere she went. Drawing tension away from the more hostile pack mates. On their way back to the kitchen for lunch the pair passed a group of females chatting in the yard. "Alpha Jordan, Eva," Taryn called out waving them over. Smiling they turned back to join them. As they approached Eva sighed when she saw Katrine standing with the group. Katrine's haughty expression was nothing new to Eva. Katrine and Delia were the biggest thorns in her side. She was unhappy being an omega but didn't have the strength or skill to change her rank. Katrine and her friends sneered at Jordan as Taryn introduced her to the group. It was clear that she thought she'd found an easy target in the human. Eva prepared herself to protect Jordan from her attack. "So you're finally stepping down Eva? It's about time," the lanky brunette's eyes glittered hostile, "but come on, she's not even a shifter. Not much of a human either," she looked down her sharp nose with a smirk. "If our Alpha has his way she will be shifter soon enough," Taryn smiled making the group chuckle at the implication. "She is not one of us and even if she was the human can't just step in without a challenge." Eva barely contained her fury, her claws digging into her palms. The female had no right to question their Alpha's choice in mate. Before Eva could bare her teeth and smackdown the insolent female Jordan spoke up. "Okay," Jordan said over the shocked whispers. "I accept your challenge," Jordan's hazel eyes met Katrine's surprised gaze. Stunned silence descended on the group. Eva blinked when she saw a slight glow behind Jordan's furious eyes. Jordan didn't even know what made her say it. She knew she couldn't take even an omega shifter in a fight. She knew better than to start a fight she couldn't win but something possessive and primal inside her could not let this challenge go unanswered. A small crowd had gathered drawn by the wave of power that washed through the small human. It had struck a chord in each of the gathered pack mates making them stare in awe at their Alpha's chosen mate. Eva was stunned. She had felt small burst of natural Alpha power from Jordan all day but this was something more. There was true power in this human and Jordan had no idea. Eva remembered the Oracle' words. He'd said Jordan was special. She was beginning to get a glimpse of understanding. Eva shook her head trying to clear her thoughts when she heard Katrine's stutter, "I . . . I wasn't trying to challenge you," she whimpered shrinking under Jordan's power and stepping behind another shifter for cover. "I just wanted to make a point." "I see," Jordan murmured. "Anyone else?" she asked turning her back on the cowering female in a clear dismissal and faced the crowd of awed and curious pack members who shifted uncomfortably. Though Jordan seemed fragile and weak to their basic senses their beasts knew instinctively that messing with this woman would be a grave mistake. There would be no denying Jordan's sheer power and position as Alpha. Jordan waited but no one answered. "I may be just a human but I love Xavier and he chose me as his mate. As his mate, according to your laws, it is my duty to take up the mantel of Alpha Queen," she growled. "And as Alpha I swear to love and protect this pack with everything I am. If you believe my vow then stand down, but if anyone doubts my sincerity feel free to make your challenge."
