The whispers were gaining in strength as Ivy struggled with what was happening around her. Who was this male that could bring everything to a stand-still like this; who inspired such fear in the others? Finally the name that was being whispered so fearfully penetrated Ivy's mind... "I'm the Alpha of the Wolfland Pact." That was the last thing Ivy heard as darkness swept over her. * * * * Moving swiftly, Daylon caught Ivy as she collapsed. Concerned, Daylon wondered briefly if Ivy was afraid of him. Was she overwhelmed by the things she had possibly heard about him? For once Daylon wished his reputation wasn't quite so... dark. Their one encounter left him with the impression she was strong and spirited, so why had she passed out? Cradling her against his chest he vowed that she would come to know him, the real person. Her pack cleared out quickly, rushing to get away from the notorious Alpha of the Wolfland Pact, leaving only warriors and Ivy's mom in the Inner Chambers. Sam and Holland stood near Daylon, ready to defend their Alpha's back. Daylon knew that each man was battle ready, but Sam seemed more... tense, more controlled than usual. Ivy's father, snarling in anger, remained along with several others. Every line of his body showed his anger at Daylon's interruption of the mating ceremony. Tension, thick as a low hanging fog, air hung in the air. "I deny your claim," Dolmas shouted, causing Daylon's warriors to tense. "I call death challenge!" Dolmas didn't have the right to deny anything. Nothing stopped a wolf from claiming his mate, nothing... except death. And Daylon had no intention of dying in a challenge, especially to such an ass like Dolmas O'Farrell. He'd warned the old man, had hoped he would listen, but apparently his own self-serving purposes ruled his mind. "You old fool," Daylon said quietly, his voice all the more frightening for its softness. "Dolmas, let it be," Mary pleaded, her face stripped of all color. "Out with you, woman!" Dolmas growled. "This is men's business." "Please, Husband," she begged, "please, stop this." "Get. Out. Now." Dolmas, his anger saturating the room, snarled. "I'll deal with your disobedience later." Daylon was amazed at how Dolmas spoke to his mate, but was even more amazed at the low growl that came from Sam. Women of his pack would have skinned their mates for such blatant disrespect. The males of his pack were dominant, true, but never would they speak thusly to a woman. His own mother would have smacked his father's ears if he spoke to her in such a way, publicly or privately. Hell, she popped his a few times, too. "Kern, my eldest, will be my Champion," Dolmas growled, interrupting Daylon's musings. Disgusted, Daylon realized Dolmas didn't intend to fight the challenge; he planned to use his eldest son in his stead. Out of the corner of his eye Daylon saw the fearful look that passed over the other man's face. Once nominated as Champion Kern had to fight or lose all standing in his pack. Dread made his movements slow as he stripped off his clothes. Kern took a deep breath, and began the transformation process. Shaking his head, Daylon shifted Ivy's limp body to Holland. "Guard her well," Daylon said to Holland. Quickly he shed his clothes. His body surged with power as Daylon dropped to his hands and knees as the change roared through him. Thick, coarse hair covered his body as man gave way to beast. His mouth elongated into a muzzle that held sharp, deadly teeth. Daylon shuddered as power flowed through his body from the tip of his snout to the end of his tail. His bones snapped and popped, rearranging to support the frame of his wolf. Within seconds a huge, muscular black wolf waited where the man once stood. Bright yellow eyes, with a black outer ring, narrowed as he watched the other wolf ready itself to attack. Kern circled Daylon, snarling, snapping, and putting on quite a show. Unimpressed, Daylon watched... waited. Focused on his opponent, Daylon looked for weaknesses. Watching Kern's eyes, he searched for a sign that would betray... ah, there it was; a quick look down toward Daylon's front legs. Quick as a lightning strike, Kern lunged, his massive jaw aiming for Daylon's forepaw. Reading his intent clearly Daylon surged forward, head butting Kern, making him stagger back. Loud, horrible growls echoed around the room from both packs as Daylon leaped at the other wolf. Teeth slashed as both their muzzles collided again and again. Daylon used his superior strength to test Kern's abilities, temperament, and control. Within minutes, Daylon knew that this could end up a bloody mess if he wanted. Kern, in desperation, was taking chances that left him open and vulnerable. A slight tickle at the back of his neck indicted that Sam was linking with him mentally. Jesus, Daylon, our youngest pups fight better than him. What the hell kind of training do they put their youngster's through? Moving quickly Daylon used his weight to push Kern on his back. Thank you Captain Obvious. Using his larger body, Daylon pinned Kern on the ground. Head whipping back and forth, Kern snarled in frustration, unable to dislodge Daylon as they fought. Oh for god's sakes. Stop playing around with him. He's no match for you, Daylon. You're just screwing around now. Using his paws, Kern attempted to push Daylon off him, which resulted in a deafening scream of loud growls, harsh barks, and sharp nips. Sam, in case you failed to notice I'm in the middle of a death challenge. Go bug someone else for Christ's sake and get the hell out of my head! On his back, unable to regain his footing, Kern was trapped by Daylon's weight and strength. A sharp whine sounded from Kern as Daylon stood over him. When the other wolf struggled, Daylon snarled and used his teeth to nip the other wolf, drawing more blood, and cowing him back down. After several minutes of squirming, snapping, and snarling, Daylon had had enough. If Kern had submitted, Daylon would have ended the fight. As the winner it was his choice to let his opponent live, or not. But the more Kern struggled, the shorter Daylon's temper became. Then Kern managed to get lucky. He jerked his paw up aiming at Daylon's chest, intending to push him away. His paw missed and swiped Daylon's muzzle. The sharp claw cut into the skin, narrowly missing his eye. Deep scratches dripped blood down Daylon's muzzle and a red haze exploded in his mind. Baring his teeth, Daylon lunged forward, burying them in the throat of his enemy. Kern froze under Daylon, his cry high pitched and fearful. Daylon snarled, low and fierce, shaking his head with his teeth embedded in Kern's throat. A loud, frantic yip from the other wolf signaled he submitted. The need to kill, to crush his enemy's windpipe bloomed in Daylon as blood seeped into his mouth. He bit down harder, enlisting a frightened whimper from the other wolf. "Daylon, my Alpha, let him go," Holland spoke softly. "You won. You defeated him and he's submitted. Your mate needs you, Daylon." The words of his second in command penetrated his mind, backing him off his blood lust. Daylon didn't want to begin his mated life with the death of her brother between Ivy and him. He released the other wolf and howled in victory, his warriors picking up the call. Muzzle bloody, eyes narrow, he stalked to Dolmas and snarled. A flash of blinding light consumed him and the man was once again in control. "I have given your son his life, Dolmas. Cross me again, and I won't be so generous. Ivy is the only reason you and your pup live." Daylon picked up his clothes and dressed quickly. The Alpha of Ivy's pack stepped forward, waiting until Daylon was dressed. "My name is Surlak. Young Daylon, your reputation precedes you. It is said you are blood thirsty, with little regard to life, but I saw control that signifies a true leader. You have Ivy with my blessings, not that a wolf needs such when he finds his mate. Rest assured that no more problems will come from my pack." "My patience will only stretch so far, and her father has had more of a warning than I usually give. Third time's the charm. If Ivy so desires I'll bring her back later to visit, once she has adjusted to my pack. Would you tell her mother of this?" "It will be taken care of," Surlak replied. "Dolmas will want to deny Ivy the right to see her mother, but I will grant permission. The best Dolmas can do is bar Ivy from his home." Dolmas, turning on his heel, stormed out of the Inner Chambers, leaving his son to be cared for by other pack members. Kern lost a lot of blood, but Daylon made sure that his injuries were not life threatening. Even though Surlak said there would be no more problems from his pack, experience told Daylon that he hadn't heard the last from Ivy's father. Holland shifted Ivy back to Daylon and they left the Inner Chamber. "Gather our warriors and meet me at the vehicles," Daylon told Holland. * * * * "Ivy..." Ivy swam through the layers of consciousness, struggling to break the surface. She was aware of strong arms holding her body gently against a broad chest. The smell of man mixed with the natural scent of wolf made her snuggle further into the body that held her so securely. That smell, dear god that smell! It made her think of fires crackling quietly in a fireplace, soft light from candles, peaceful evenings, a soft bed and... a mate. A shiver raced up her spine. "Ivy?" Oh lord, and that voice. It called to her; a gentle but commanding request that demanded she pay attention. Ivy frowned slightly. She didn't want to answer the summons she heard in that voice because... "My mate, open your eyes for me. It's time to go home." Ivy eyes snapped open. She was held in his arms, her head resting on his shoulder... Daylon, the Alpha of the Wolfland Pact. "Ivy?" he asked again. Ivy raised wide eyes to Daylon's, fear and confusion showing clearly. "Y-yes? What happened? Where are we? Why are you-" "It's okay, my beauty." "What's going on? And dear god, is that blood?" There were long scratches gouged into Daylon cheek, but they were healing quickly. There was blood in the corner of his mouth, too. "Your father and brother didn't agree with my claim on you. We fought." "You fought both my father and my brother?" Ivy whispered, horrified. "Hell no. Your father tried to deny my right to claim you as my mate. He called death challenge. Kern stood as his champion." "Is he-did you...?" "He lives only because of you. I didn't want to start our life together with the blood of your family on my hands." "Thank you for that. It would have destroyed my mom losing her first born," Ivy said. Daylon took note that Ivy said her mom would be upset with Kern's death, not her. "Please, I'm okay now; let me down. The males don't think much of the women of my pack, but I don't want to be viewed as weak. Well, weaker than what they already view me since I fainted." Daylon placed Ivy on her feet. "Fuck. Look, I know this has been sudden. But Ivy, you're my mate. Do you doubt that? Is there any question in your mind that we belong together?" "I just... I never dreamed you would find me in time. I mean, really, what were the odds of that happening? Daylon, I know you're my mate. I sensed it in a dream, and I hoped, somehow, to find you... But, I don't know you beyond your reputation, which, frankly is..." "Are you afraid of me?" Daylon demanded, the concern in his eyes touching Ivy's heart. "Is that why you fainted? Sweetheart, I would never hurt you; I couldn't! I know what they say about me, and yeah, most of it is true. But you... you are the other half of me. I could no more hurt you than I could hurt myself. I'm capable of many things, Ivy, but hurting you isn't one of them." Ivy closed her eyes for a moment, debating on how much to tell him. "My father restricted what I ate until the mating ceremony. I've only had bread and water for the past two days, Daylon. It was another mind game of his to make me submit. I didn't want to be mated to Zan, and I fought my dad as best I could. Christ, the rumors about him and what he likes to do to his partners... and, well... then to hear the name of your pack, I guess stress and hunger got the better of me. I'm not afraid of you, but the rumors about you and your pack are-" "He did... what!" Daylon exclaimed, his eyes lightening to yellow. "That's the least he... uh, well, that is to say," Ivy hedged as Daylon growled softly. "Maybe we should just leave, Daylon. Can we go, please?" "What else, Ivy? What the fuck else did he do to you?" Daylon's voice was deadly. "Tell me. Did he do this?" Daylon ran his finger across Ivy's cheek, his touch light. There, on her cheek, was a mottled mess of reds, purples and yellows. The contrast against her fair skin and the dark bruises were startling. On her upper arms were perfectly round bruises that could be nothing else but finger marks where someone had grasped both her arms. Ivy raised her eyes to Daylon, filled with tears. "It doesn't matter now. What was done was done in the past, before you showed up." "I should have killed him. Jesus, Ivy. Has it always been like this?" "Yes, but it doesn't matter now. He's out of my life, and I never want to see him again. Mom is the only one I care about." So, Daylon thought, Kern is on her shit list, too. Wonder about the younger brother. "I'll bring you back to see her if that's what you want. I'd like for you to get settled with my pack first." "Dad won't allow her to see me, trust me on this," Ivy said. "That man," Daylon hissed, "is in need of killing. Don't worry about it, Surlak granted permission. You may have to meet her somewhere else though." "She won't do it. She won't risk angering my father. Can we just go? I'm tired, hungry, and Daylon? You need to know that I haven't gone through the Rite of Passage. I haven't transformed into my wolf shape yet. My father skipped that ceremony so he could get the mating ceremony done." "Ah god," Daylon said, running a hand through his hair. "How could he deny you that? Okay, we'll do it with my pack in attendance. I know it's not the same, but-" "It's fine. But that needs to be done before you mate me. Since you are Alpha of your pack I need to prove I can transform." "Oh my beauty, I can't wait to see you in our Circle of Stone, and watch you transform. You're going to make a beautiful wolf." Before Ivy could answer, Holland walked around the vehicle. "We need to get her stuff and get going, Daylon. I want back on our territory." "Yeah. You, Sam, and I will escort Ivy to her home," Daylon said. "There's not all that much to get," Ivy sighed. "Huh? Every woman I've never met has closet full of clothes!" Holland said, confused. "And shit, more shoes than you can shake a stick at. My sisters took over the house with their clothes, hair gels, jewelry and don't even get me started about certain other things that roll around once a month! You need your clothes, and personal stuff... don't you? Don't you have some sort of Hope Chest or something, too?" "I'm going to tell Tara and Jade what you just said," Sam grinned. "Look, old man-" "Settle down," Daylon snapped. "Ivy? What do you want to do?" "I don't have much, just a few things that my granny left me. The chest isn't half full. Daylon, I'm really tired. Can we do this tomorrow?" Ivy asked. "Yeah, that may be a good idea," Sam said. "Let the waters calm down some before we stir them up again." "But she don't have anything to wear," Holland pointed out, still reeling that Ivy wasn't demanding her clothes and other things. His sisters would have rather walked barefoot through shards of glass before leaving without their stuff. "Ivy? Would you mind borrowing something of my mom's until tomorrow? She's about your size," Daylon asked. "That's fine, I really don't care. I'm hungry enough to eat a horse; can we grab something to eat, too? I don't think I can wait." "Load up everyone," Daylon said, the decision made. "My mate wants to eat, so get a move on." The rest of the warriors returned to their vehicles'. Shaking his head, Sam walked to the driver side of the third Escalade. Maybe because he was older-his family was grown and gone-he understood the hidden message in Ivy's words. He hoped that Daylon didn't get upset when he realized how bad Ivy's life was up to now. * * * * "There's a service station about five miles down the road on the left. An older human couple runs it, and they're really sweet. They make a chicken salad sandwich that's to die for. Could we stop there?" Ivy asked once everyone was settled. Holland drove and another warrior sat in the passenger seat. Daylon and Ivy were in the middle seat. One of the warriors hunted around in the back until he found a blanket that Daylon folded up and used for a pillow. Ivy curled up on the seat, and rested her head in his lap while they drove. "No problem," Daylon said. "Anything else? What do you want to drink?" "Just some chips and a Dr. Pepper," Ivy replied. "Daylon? Tell me about yourself." Daylon ran his fingers through her long, soft hair. "Well, let's see. I'm twenty-seven, and yeah, I know that's young to be Alpha. My dad, Rigor, stepped down five years and I took over. He became an Elder, and he and the other four Elders helped me for the first couple of years while I learned the ropes. Our pack was strong under his leadership, but I moved us into the technical age." "Any siblings?" "No, just me. And I'm close to both my mom and dad. Kiara is my mom's name, and she's going to go nuts over you, sweetheart. She's been complaining for years that she was outnumbered by us males. And believe me, she's been known to tell my dad what's what, too. God, she's a hoot." "Your dad is okay with that?" Ivy asked, surprised. "Ivy, not every pack is run like yours. The males of my pack are confident in their masculinity. Having our mates tell us that we're..." "Acting like a blockhead," Holland said from up front. "Heard that many times out of his mother's mouth. It's aimed at Daylon as much as it's aimed at Rigor." "Rigor is my dad. Mom doesn't pull her punches. Holland has been on the receiving end of Mom's sharp tongue, too. Don't let him fool you." "Oh yeah, she's got me a few times," Holland said. "Hey, we're here. Daylon, do you want me to run in and get the stuff so you can stay with Ivy? Is that okay?" "Yes, go ahead." In a few minutes Holland returned. Ivy ate, wondering why Holland asked Daylon if it was okay for him to get her food. Lying her head down once more in Daylon's lap she drifted off to sleep from the gentle motion of the vehicle. "I hope she sleeps the rest of the way," Daylon said when he felt her breathing level out. "She's so tired, and man, she looks so frail." Finding Love Ch. 02 "She's been thorough a lot," Holland replied. "Did you see the shock on her face when you described your parent's relationship? Damn it, no one should have to grow up like she did." "She told me that her father was in such a rush to get her mated he didn't do the Rite of Passage. Her wolf must be nearly insane with the need to be free for the first time." "That bastard," Holland hissed quietly. "So, what are you going to do about that?" "Have it, of course. Only it'll be her new pack that welcomes her wolf. Seems fitting." "You need to have your mom talk to her, too. Ivy needs to understand that we don't use our fists to settle an argument with our women," Holland said. "I think she knows; it'll just take time," Daylon sighed. "And seeing how the other woman act will help. Man, I never dreamed I'd feel like this for someone. I want to see her smile, laugh..." "Welcome to the wonderful world of being mated," Holland smirked. "Or so I've heard." "Laugh while you can, man," Daylon said. "Your day is coming." "Yeah? Well, I wish she'd hurry up and put in an appearance," Holland said. "She's out there, you got to have faith," Daylon said. "How much longer before we're home?" "Well, since we're not driving like we have the hounds of hell on our heels... about forty minutes," Holland replied. "Good," Daylon laughed. "I can't wait to see mom's face." "Oh, I imagine word got to her. You weren't exactly quiet when leaving earlier." "She's going to freak," Daylon grinned. "Then haul Ivy off to pamper her and I won't see her for hours!" "Good. Something tells me that girl needs a little pampering in her life, my friend." "It's on the list, Holland." Daylon said. "First off. * * * * Ivy was still asleep when they arrived at Daylon's village. He shook her shoulder, smiling slightly as her eyes fluttered open. Pushing her hair out of her face, Ivy sat up. "We're home, Ivy," Daylon said. Before he could continue a loud knocking on the tinted windows caused Ivy to jump, making Daylon grin. "That's my mom," Daylon said. "I imagine she wants to meet you." "Oh lord, I look like I've been pulled through a keyhole sideways!" Ivy gasped. "How would she know about me anyway?" "I... ah, well. When I figured out who you were, and what was happening-Sam told me that you were about to be mated-I lost my temper." "Is Sam the one that I saw in my room? That shadowy man?" "Yes, it was. I knew something was wrong, Ivy. I could feel your despair. Sam is telepathic and he followed the link from me to you." The knocking came again. "Dude, your mom is going to break the glass if you don't open the door," Holland said. "That's pretty much everything that happened, I promise. And he's right; I need to open the door. She's going to love you, sweetheart," Daylon said. "Don't be afraid." Daylon opened the door and got out. Ivy slid across the seat and stepped out of the SUV. Holding Ivy's hand, Daylon turned and reached out to his mom. She was a bit shorter than Ivy. Her honey brown hair was heavily streaked with gray and piled up in a bun with a few lazy wisps working free. Large sky blue eyes, just like Daylon's, stared at Ivy. Happiness danced in those blue eyes. It took Ivy a minute to decipher what she was seeing. It was an emotion that never showed in her mom's eyes. She was slightly plump, what men would call generously curvy. A man stood behind her who was nearly as tall as Daylon. His long black hair, with white sprinkle through, was held back with a leather tie. His eyes were the color of dark chocolate. Daylon was a beautiful mixture of his parents. "Mom, Dad, this is Ivy O'Farrell... my mate," Daylon said, making the introductions. "Ivy, these are my parents... Rigor and Kiara McCloud." "It's a pleasure to meet you," Ivy said. "Oh honey, look at you! You're as pretty as a picture," Kiara exclaimed. "Thank you, ma'am." "Oh heavenly day, she has manners! Did you hear that Rigor?" Kiara was grinning from ear-to-ear. "Maybe she'll rub off on you brutes." "Now Kiara, you've always said you like us just the way we are," Rigor said. "Isn't that right, son?" "There's always room for improvement," Kiara smirked. "How about a little help here, Daylon?" Rigor asked. "You're on your own, Dad," Daylon laughed. "I know better than to comment on that." "There may be hope for you yet, Son," Kiara said. "Now, would you like something to eat, Ivy? I bet you'd rather have a bath, wouldn't you. Knowing these brutes they just hauled you off. Tell you what, why don't I get the water running while Rigor scrounges up a quick snack for you. You just come with me and they can bring it upstairs." Rigor shook his head. "Can't get a word in edge-wise. Welcome to the family, Ivy. My son is very lucky to have you." "Thank you, sir. But I'm the lucky one." "Oh lord, girl. You'll have his head so swelled he won't be able to get through the door. Now, you go on with Kiara and us men will hunt and gather." Kiara noticed Ivy flinched at the word "girl" and made a mental note to find out why. Kiara was a loving mother that would take on a grizzly bear to protect her pup, but when her 'mother's instinct' was triggered she wouldn't stop until she knew what was wrong. She wouldn't interfere, but she would get to the bottom of things. And Ivy had her instincts screaming loudly. "Daylon...?" The uncertainty in Ivy's eyes nearly killed Daylon. He couldn't imagine what Dolmas had done to her these past two days that crushed her spirit so. He wanted to see the Ivy he met in the dream and was determined to do whatever it took. Something was bothering Ivy, and he needed to find out what it was and fix it. There was something lurking in her eyes' and it worried Daylon. He was sure he didn't have the whole story of what happened these past two days. "Go ahead," Daylon said. "Dad and I will grab you a snack. We'll be up in a minute." "Okay," she said. Ivy and Kiara walked upstairs, leaving the two men. Daylon went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. "Damn, I don't even know what she likes," Daylon mumbled. "There's fruit, some slices of honey ham, crackers, and some cheese cubes. All finger foods and easy to get together." "Okay. Thanks dad." "Now, what the hell is going on?" Rigor asked. "Her father is Dolmas O'Farrell, right?" "Oh yeah." "I've met him, you know, at one of the yearly meetings. A more egotistical, self-important, and chauvinistic man I have yet to meet." "You forgot abusive." "Well, shit. Is he the one that put those bruises on her?" "Him or his sons." "Daylon? Where did you bury his mangled body?" "He still lives, as does his eldest. The quick version is I dreamed of Ivy. Sam used his powers to locate her because I had this feeling of... despair. I interrupted the mating ceremony and claimed Ivy. Her father called death challenge and used his punk-ass son as his champion. Dad, he wouldn't fight me himself. I didn't kill Kern, but it was close. I took Ivy and left immediately. She has nothing with her, nothing at all." "I have to congratulate you on the control you showed, son." Daylon assembled the food on a tray. "There's still something going on. In my dream she was untried, but adventurous. Her spirit was strong, dad. Now... she's withdrawn. Something happened and it's nearly broke her." "I can tell she's strong; she'd have to be with a father like Dolmas. I can sense something is off, too. Whatever it is, she'll pull through with our help. Now, get that up there so she can eat. It takes forever for that damn swimming pool that your mother calls a sunken tub to fill." "You built Mom that thing, remember?" "Yeah, yeah, yeah... What's a mate to do? Damn large ass tub." * * * * "The men should be up here in a minute, so why not sit down while the tub fills," Kiara said. "And call me Kiara, honey." "Wow, that has to be the biggest thing I've ever seen," Ivy laughed. "Rigor built it for me. Granted, I got a strange look when I told him how big I wanted it and I wanted it sunken, but I love it." Neither woman said anything while they watched the tub fill with water. "Ivy, do you have any clothes with you? I didn't see any suitcases." Ivy's skin flushed. "No, nothing besides the clothes on my back. And I hate this dress." "It's a pretty dress." "It was what my father chose for the mating ceremony he planned. Daylon interrupted it." "Oh my, bet that was something to see," Kiara said. "Well, don't worry about it. I have lots of clothes you can choose from until Daylon takes you to get yours." "You don't mind?" "No, honey. Matter of fact I have a wonderful emerald green dress that will look great with your eyes." Daylon walked in with a tray full of finger foods. "Here sweetheart, I didn't know what you liked so I got a bit of everything." "It looks good," Ivy waited until Daylon put the tray down. "Thank you and I love everything that's there. It's a very sweet-I'm really touched that you-" "Ivy, there is nothing more satisfying to me than to see you eat what I brought you; to know that my mate is well fed by my hand, to know that I provided for you," Daylon said softly. "Now, I'm going to go so you can enjoy your bath. After that, if you're ready, we'll do the Rite of Passage. I'll see you shortly." Daylon left and Kiara stood up, shutting off the water. "I know your mother. Well, not personally. She seems like a good woman that has her fair share of burdens. I'm not going to ask why the Rite hasn't been performed yet, nor why it wasn't done with your pack." "My dad-" "And that tells me everything I need to know," Kiara said. "I'm going to make a few calls. I'm assuming we're going to do the Rite here, tonight. We will stand for you, as your parents should have stood for you, and celebrate your wolf. We will take you into our pack as a beloved member and mate to our Alpha, Ivy. This should be a joyful occasion, and I'm going to try my damndest to make it such." "Oh god," Ivy said, her words strangled as tears started to fall. The fear, desperation, and sorrow finally overwhelmed Ivy and she broke down. Everything came to a head, and exploded out of her. Sobbing, her body shaking, Ivy let go. "It's going to be okay," Kiara said, holding Ivy. "Let it go. You'll feel better once you get this out of your system." Ivy cried for a full ten minutes until the tears began to dry up. "Relax and enjoy yourself in there," Kiara said. "I'm going to lay out that dress I told you about. There's make-up in the top drawer. Use whatever you want, then meet us in the kitchen." "Thank you, Kiara," Ivy said. "Thank you so much." "Honey, before the night is done, you'll be my daughter. You have no idea how long I've waited for this, and it's an added benefit that we get along! Now, you enjoy yourself in here." * * * * "Please tell me her father, and I use that word loosely, is buried six feet under," Kiara said as she sat down at the table. "And you wonder where he gets his blood-thirsty nature from," Rigor laughed. "Right, don't try to tell me you haven't already asked that same question," Kiara said. "He lives," Daylon said. "Dad can explain it to you later. Is she okay?" "Tired, emotional, and she's got things on her mind; but other than that, she's okay," Kiara said. "I need to call everyone so we can get the Rite done, and done correctly." "I already started," Rigor said. "Nearly all the pack will be there." "Thanks. I want this to be a happy memory for her," Daylon said. An hour later Ivy came downstairs. The emerald green dress fit her perfectly. It was a straight dress with a slit in the front that showed her leg when she walked. Her arms were bare again. Her hair was wavy from the heat of the bath, and she used a little of the make-up Kiara pointed out. Her brown sandals' went nicely. Daylon stood up, moved around the table in a daze and came to stand in front of her. Brushing a loose hair out of her face, he leaned down and kissed her lips. "You ready?" Daylon whispered. "Yes," Ivy nodded. "My wolf knows; I can feel her waiting." "Just remember to stay calm and let it happen. It doesn't hurt even though it sounds awful." The Circle of Stone was made of large boulders that were rectangular in shape and stood straight up. Along the top were more stones that connected the standing boulders. The boulders were in a circle and the top stones stretched from one boulder to the next, making a circle, also. It was a five minute walk to the circle. Ivy stepped inside the stones, Daylon with her. Both Kiara and Rigor stood outside. Ivy was shocked to see so many people; it looked like nearly the whole village was in attendance. Night had fallen and the moon's light casted the circle in an unearthly, silvery light. Ivy shivered slightly; her wolf was excited. "Hand me your dress and shoes, my beauty." Daylon unzipped her dress, and Ivy let it slip off. Stepping out of it she handed it to Daylon. Holding his arm, she undid her sandals, handing those to Daylon, too. She wasn't ashamed of being naked; this was as natural as breathing to a wolf. Daylon's eyes caressed her; the hot promise in his eye's telling her if the transformation was successful her virginity would be no more by the end of the night. A light blush, not from embarrassment, covered her skin. Moving backwards, Daylon watched Ivy standing in the pale moonlight. The second he stepped out of the circle a wave of heat swept through Ivy, blurring her vision for a second. Power raced through her body, driving her to her knees. Blackness edged her vision. Suddenly her wolf appeared in her mind's eye. Tears ran down Ivy's face as she looked upon her. A scratchy tongue darted out, and licked her tear stained cheek. Calmness settled over Ivy. Her coat grew quickly, her snout lengthened while her tail formed. Then the sounds started; loud snapping noises as her body assumed the shaped of a wolf. It reminded Ivy of being in the dentist's chair. The sound of the drill was loud and there was pressure, but no pain. The fog began to lift and Ivy noticed that everything was sharper and clearer. In the middle of the circle sat a small, delicate dark brown wolf that had red highlights in her coat. Ivy was small, even for a female, but her carriage was regal. "Dear god, she's magnificent," Daylon breathed. Raising her head, Ivy called out... the sound carrying into the night. At once the pack answered. Daylon's wolf answered the strongest. Straining on his leash, fighting the man for control, his wolf wanted near his mate... now. "Go to her, son," Rigor whispered. Daylon barely had time to strip his clothes off before his control snapped. Transforming quickly, the huge, black wolf stalked toward the circle. Ivy sat, waiting patiently as Daylon entered and moved toward her. Less than a foot away, she stood up, lowered her chest to the ground and wagged her tail. This was the spirit Daylon first saw, the playfulness. Again he howled, and Ivy answered him. Sniffing her, he rubbed his head against hers. Lifting his left paw he batted at her, wanting her to play. Ivy jumped around, dropped her chest to the ground again, growled lightly... and jumped him! Both of them rolled around on the ground, play fighting until Rigor clapped his hands, bringing the games to an end. Laughter floated around the crowd, and smiles greeted them as they changed back. Daylon dressed quickly, the man now reacting to the woman. Ivy slipped into the dress, and hand-in-hand they left the circle. Many of Daylon's pack gathered around, welcoming Ivy. "How do you feel?" Daylon asked. "I feel great, not tired at all." "Good," Daylon said, a wealth of meaning in the words. "Let's say good night to Mom and Dad and go to my place. I want you in my bed, now." A few hasty good-byes-along with more than one knowing smile-and they were at Daylon's front door. "You can take the grand tour tomorrow, sweetheart," Daylon said as they entered the house. "Something tells me I'm not going to get out of the bedroom tonight," Ivy whispered as he led her through the darkened halls. "You damn sure got that right," Daylon growled. "I'll be careful when I make love to you. It'll hurt some, but I'm going to have you so hot for me, you'll hardly notice." Moving behind her, Daylon pushed her hair out of the way. His warm breath on the back of her neck made her shiver. Chill bumps raced up her arms. Ivy jumped when his lips feathered across her nape, making the hairs on her neck stand up. His hands massaged her shoulders as he sniffed her neck, the small puff of air making Ivy quiver. "Sweet Jesus, you smell like heaven," he groaned. "I can smell your scent, too," Ivy said. "It's spicy, strong... male." "Kiss me," he whispered, his breath warm against Ivy's neck. "Mmm, yes." Turning her around, Daylon leaned toward her. His lips descended, tasting, while holding her loosely in his embrace. Little nibbling kisses covered her lips, encouraging Ivy to open to him. Ivy was unable to stop the moan that slipped from her mouth. She knew he could see her hard nipples standing up against the fabric of her dress. Daylon slid his arms around her back, pulling them groin to groin. The hardness Ivy felt prodding against her stomach proved she wasn't the only one affected. Again his mouth slanted over Ivy's, urging her to respond to his kiss. Moaning into his mouth, Ivy felt his shaft rubbing against her. Daylon's mouth skimmed along the column of her throat. Ivy tilted her head back barring her neck to him. He eagerly rubbed his cheek against her throat. Stepping back, he looked at her. Awareness swept through her from what she saw in Daylon's eyes. Not just desire, but something more. "Ready to take that off?" he asked, motioning to the dress. Turning so he could unzip it, she shivered when his hands touched the warm skin of her back. Easing it off she turned, waiting with nothing on but her sandals. Daylon started at the tip of her head, caressing her with his eye's, and didn't stop until he reached her feet. "You are truly the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." "Please Daylon, let me see you, too." Daylon undid the buttons on his shirt. She was fascinated by how his muscles flexed when he removed it. She ran her hands over his hard, muscular chest, traveling down until she reached the top of his jeans. Daylon helped her unbutton them, then sat down to remove his shoes. Throwing them off to the side he stood up and stepped out of his jeans. Ivy swallowed when she saw that he went commando. "Oh good lord, you're the beautiful one, Daylon!" His body was ripped, all hard angles and soft back hair. A small smile played around his lips at her words. "I guess men aren't called beautiful, huh?" "You can call me beautiful any time, Ivy," Daylon said. "Don't be nervous. Why don't you sit on the bed, my beauty?" Ivy sat down. A slight nudge on Ivy's shoulder urged her farther back. Propped up on her elbows she watched as Daylon lifted a foot, unbuckled the sandal, and dropped it to the floor. He kissed the inside of her ankle, making Ivy flinch. Holding her ankle, he looked at her. "Do you like this?" "Oh yeah, I wasn't expecting it to feel so good." Daylon nibbled up her leg until he reached the inside of her knee. Gently he nipped her there, then rubbed his tongue over the small hurt. Ivy gasped; surprised that such an inconspicuous spot on her body could be so arousing. Ivy dropped flat on the bed, on her back. Gently he opened her legs more, settling in between them. "I'm going to taste you, sweetheart." She was wet, and lord have mercy, that small tuff of dark red curls at the junction of her legs was driving him crazy. She looked so soft, and pink, and he was dying to have her juice in his mouth. Bending his head he lowered his lips and caressed her clit. Ivy jerked on the bed like someone pulled her arms and legs at the same time, moaning loudly. Finding Love Ch. 02 His tongued touched her clit and her taste was tangy. Ivy fisted the sheets as Daylon feasted on her. Lost in the sensation, she couldn't tell what was his tongue, the whiskers on his chin, or his mouth. His arms held her legs open as he sucked on her clit, tongued it, and finally entered her cunt. She could hear herself being penetrated, and between lapping drags and low growls, a pressure began to build. One hand left her leg and slid up her stomach to reach for a nipple. Rolling the nub, he felt how it hardened under his touch. Ivy's head whipped back and forth as he used his mouth, tongue and fingers to drive Ivy closer to coming. Raising his head, he looked at her. "You like that, don't you?" He gently pinched one of her dark nipples. His other hand drifted up to tug both nipples, rolling the tips, making them harder. "Oh god, oh god... yes," Ivy moaned; she never knew her nipples were so sensitive. One hand left her nipple causing Ivy to moan in disappointment. Then she gasped as a finger entered her. The slow steady motion of that thick finger, moving in and out, made her eyes roll back in her head. Another finger entered and she felt stretched open. Both fingers started moving as Daylon's other hand twisted her nipple. Small shocks of pleasure made Ivy arched on the bed. Then a third finger entered her. All three were wet with her excitement and she was thrusting her hips. Daylon left her breast, and thumbed her clit, fingering it. With a small scream Ivy exploded. "That's it, come for me," Daylon growled. Ivy was moving on his hand, gasping and shaking. Watching her climax had to be the most beautiful thing Daylon had ever seen. Swiftly he moved between her legs, and aimed his hard cock. Steadily pushing, he entered her. She was tight still, and so wet; her muscles' gripping him. Ivy moaned, this time in pain. He knew he was hurting her; she was so small, and her pussy was so tight. While he was bigger than average, he wasn't obscenely huge. Gently he moved in and out, waiting for her to loosen up, trying not to hit her hymen. "Hurts," Ivy whispered. "I know, I'm almost there," Daylon gasped. "One shove and I'm through." "Do it!" Daylon busted through and Ivy snarled. Her fingers dug into his shoulders. He welcomed the pain, would take it gladly if it would help her. A lone tear escaped and rolled down her cheek. "Baby? Just hold on, it'll get better," Daylon said. The urge to move was nearly overwhelming. "It's better," Ivy said, her voice stronger. "Try moving." Gently Daylon thrust in and out, and Ivy's eye's drifted closed. Her teeth bit into her bottom lip as Daylon moved faster. "Hurts?" Daylon gasped. "God, no. Harder." Daylon increased his speed, still going easy when Ivy wrapped her legs around his waist. "Harder, Daylon!" Daylon finally let go of his control and thrust into her hard, his hips snapping back and forth. He was getting close, and he wanted her to come with him. "Fuck, you're tight. God, Ivy you're so hot and wet. Come with me," Daylon moaned, his hair flopping in his face, sweaty. "Tighten up on my cock and come! Suddenly Ivy muscles' contracted, and she screamed again. Pleasure flowed through his body as he unloaded deep within her. His eye's lightened and his canines' dropped down. Still thrusting, pleasure flooding his body, nearly blind... he bit her on the shoulder, a mating bite. Ivy's hoarse cry echoed around the room as her hand came up and threaded through his hair. Impaled on his cock with his teeth holding her still, they moved together. Finally a small hiss told him Ivy was getting sore. He released her shoulder, and eased his cock out. A rush of pink tinted fluid followed. Ivy lay on the rumpled bed, her body still throbbing. "Sore?" "A little." "Stay there while I get you a towel," Daylon said. A few minutes later Daylon returned and cleaned up the wetness and small blood stain. Yawning, he threw the towel in the hamper. "Why don't you take another bath? It'll help with the soreness and relax you." "God, I think I've spent more time in the tub today than I have in my whole life." "Well, mine isn't as great as mom's, but the warm water will help with sore muscles. I'll start the water." Ivy lay in bed listening to the water running and began to drift. "Come on sleepy head, in you go." Twenty minutes later, thanks to a Jacuzzi, Ivy was as limp as a noodle, but her body felt good, relaxed. Daylon changed the sheets and the bed was turned back. Ivy lay down and Daylon settled in next to her. It was strange having a body so close to her, and she tossed for a few minutes until she found a position she liked. Snuggled up to Daylon's back seemed to work. Ivy drifted off to sleep listening to his breathing. * * * * The next morning Ivy woke alone in bed. The smell of bacon made her stomach rumble and had Ivy moving quickly from the bed. A light-weight robe was on the end of the bed. It was obvious that it was Daylon's. With a small smile Ivy slipped it on and shook her head at how it swallowed her. Following her nose she found Daylon in the kitchen. "Ready for breakfast?" "Lord yes, I'm starving," Ivy said, then did a double take when she saw the clock. "Eleven O'clock? Is that right?" "Yes, it is," Daylon grinned at Ivy's shocked look. "Well good grief. I can't remember the last time I slept that late." "You must have needed it," Daylon said. "Mom brought a pair of jeans and a t-shirt over, too. And a make-up bag... I think that's what she called it." "Your mom is the best, absolutely the best," Ivy said as she looked at the clothes. "She thought the dark brown would look good with your hair color and make your eye's look-" Daylon stopped short, then snorted at the look on her face. "And if you laugh at me I'll have to throw this very nice piece of buttered toast at you. I was repeating what she said." "You had me worried there," Ivy laughed. "Is breakfast ready?" "Yes. Have a seat and I'll serve it up." Ivy was still unused to Daylon serving her. In her pack the men were served first. But Daylon seem to take pleasure in seeing her eat, and took pride in bringing her food. Mentally Ivy shook her head as he put the plate in front of her. The two packs were as different as day and night. "Jesus, who taught you to cook?" Ivy gasped after the first mouthful of eggs covered in cheese. "This is wonderful." "Mom did, of course," Daylon replied. "She made it clear when I moved out that I was moved out and she wasn't running over here to pick up my messes, wash my clothes, clean my house... she said I knew how to do all that so I had damn well better do it." "Do you have any idea how lucky you are?" Ivy asked quietly. "Yes, I do. But I give you my word things will be different from what you grew up with," Daylon said. "Not to ruin your meal, but after breakfast we need to get your clothes and stuff." "Maybe Dad won't be at home, and things will go smoothly." "Well, just to be safe we're taking Sam and Holland. My dad is coming, too." "I really hate for your dad to see-" "I understand, Ivy, I really do. But there's no one I'd rather have at my back." "Oh god, surely you don't think my dad would do something?" Ivy said. "What would be the point? I'm officially your mate now, and accepted by your pack. I have the right to live here with them if something ever happened to you; he couldn't make me return to my old pack." "I don't trust him. With someone like him, it's not the dagger coming at you that you need to be worried about, it's the one aimed at your back that you're unaware of." Ivy stared deep into Daylon's eyes. "Don't you ever take any shit from him; do you hear me, Daylon? Do you understand what I'm saying? You're my mate, and Alpha; you treat him just like you would treat any other person." "I won't kill him unless he forces me to, Ivy. He's my father now." "Just so we understand each other." Oh, I understand you loud and clear, Daylon thought. You really do hate that old man. Ivy glanced around the kitchen, and admitted to herself she was surprised. Everything had top-of-the-line finishes: granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, and there wasn't a lot of clutter. For a man who used to be single he took care of his home. His bedroom and master bath was the same. This was a man who lived well, and took care of what he owed. "Let me get dressed, and we can go. I want to get this over." "Good. I need to call Surlak and get permission to enter his territory. He could have made a big deal about me forcing my way onto his land yesterday, and would have been well within his right to do just that." "Do you think there will be a problem?" "No, I just don't want to cause a turf war. Why don't you go get ready while I clean up the kitchen? I need to call the guys, too." "I don't mind cleaning things up in here, Daylon." "Sweetheart, washing a dish doesn't make me less of a man. I've been doing it all my life. You're my mate, not my maid. By the time you get dressed, I'll be done and we can get this over with." "You are the most amazing man I have ever met, Daylon." "I'm not all that special, Ivy." "Yeah, yeah you are." Ivy stood up and winked. "I won't take long." "Take all the time you need." Daylon watched Ivy walk out of the kitchen, a warm feeling in his stomach from that wink, then frowned at the thoughts running through his head. He'd heard rumors about her pack, but god, the rumors didn't scratch the surface. Picking up the phone, he started making his calls. He wasn't expecting trouble out of Surlak, but he knew he needed to show respect to the other Alpha so there wouldn't be problems down the road. A few phone calls and thirty minutes later Ivy came back to the kitchen. "I'm ready." "Great. Everyone should be here in a moment. I didn't ask you this morning, but are you okay? Sore? Any pain?" Daylon asked. He was sitting at the kitchen table with a list in front of him. "I'm fine, Daylon. You were right, the warm bath did help." Ivy walked up to Daylon and sat in his lap. "What's that?" "A grocery list, plus I need to run by Lowe's later. You need anything?" "I have no idea," Ivy laughed. "Let's just play it by ear, okay." Rigor, Sam, and Holland knocked on the backdoor and Daylon waved for them to come inside. "This is your home now. If you want to change something, just let me know." "Son, you are going to regret those words, let me tell you. The worst thing you can tell a woman is she can change something! How the hell do you think your Mom ended up with that damn tub? You taking notes on this Holland? That goes in the 'what not to say' column." Ivy giggled and Daylon wanted to howl with joy. "I haven't had a chance to look around much yet, but from what I can see Daylon has very good taste." "That's my girl," Daylon smirked at his dad. "Hear that Dad? Ivy knows I have good taste." Rigor noticed that Ivy didn't react quite so badly when called "girl" now, and had to stop himself from patting Daylon on the back. He was proud of his son. He was tending to Ivy's physical and mental health, easing her out of her shell. "Of course you have good taste, you mated her," Holland gestured to Ivy. "Now what she was thinking is a whole different matter." "Oh stop," Ivy laughed. "He's a good man, at least what I know about him so far. If he leaves his underwear in the middle of the floor, that might be the deal breaker." Daylon laughed loudly. "Sweetheart, I don't wear underwear." Ivy turned red from her neck up, making Holland choke with laughter. "Fair warning Ivy, it's nearly impossible to get the last word in with him." "Oh for crying out loud," Ivy was as red as her hair. "Thanks for telling me, would have been nice to let me in on that a bit earlier. Well, I'm ready if you guys are." "Good. Let's get this out of the way, then maybe we can run by Lowe's while we're out." "Oh come on, man, not Lowe's!" Sam groaned. "Damn son, the last time you hauled us there we ended up staying for hours," Rigor groused. "My ride, my call," Daylon smirked. "I told you we needed to bring the truck," Sam said to Rigor. "Load up and quit your crying," Daylon laughed. "My mate isn't complaining." "Because she doesn't know how you are once you get in that store," Holland griped. "Actually, I'm looking forward to it," Ivy said. "I've never been there." It was all Daylon could do not to growl. Did her father ever let her leave her village? It didn't sound like it. Ignoring the hidden message in her words, Rigor smiled at Ivy. "Well my dear, you're in for a treat. Daylon is like a kid in a candy store at Lowe's." "Yeah, yeah, yeah... Let's get this done," Daylon said. "You call Surlak?" Rigor asked. "Yes, he granted permission," Daylon said. "Then let's do this," Holland said. * * * * Daylon parked the Escalade in front of Ivy's house. Daylon helped Ivy out, making sure to keep his body in front of hers. He was twitchy as hell. Rigor and Holland picked up on his feelings and flanked him with Sam bringing up the rear. Walking to the front door, Daylon raised his hand to knock. The door wasn't closed completely, and swung opened slightly. Daylon frowned, his wolf was shouting warnings. "Anyone else getting a bad vibe here?" Sam asked. "Oh yeah," Daylon said. "Dad?" "Be on guard," Rigor said. "Something is very wrong." Ivy had the same feeling the men were experiencing. A feeling of menace, of anger, was thick in the air. She pushed through the door. Her first thought, her only worry, was her mom. Her wolf was snarling, wanting to come out. Ivy forced her back as she hurried into the room. "Ivy... wait!" Daylon hissed. "Mom?" Ivy called, looking around in fear. The den was a mess. Chairs were overturned, the couch table was broken in half, and shattered glass was all over the floor. There was a dent in one of the wall near the stairs. Her mom's favorite lamp lay broken on the floor. Rigor and Holland stared in shock at the destruction, while Sam was frantically shifting through the debris. Moving quickly, Ivy ran through the house. "Damn it, Ivy," Daylon growled, chasing her. "Wait! You don't know what you're walking in to." Near the back of the house, in the sun room, Ivy heard soft grunts and low cries. Hurrying through the kitchen, Ivy noticed the destruction continued in there. Flour covered the floor; food was thrown everywhere, and a whole dinner plate was embedded in the wall. It looked like someone used it as a Frisbee and threw it across the room. "Oh god, oh god... Mom!" Ivy yelled running to the back of the house. "Fucking hell!" Daylon snarled. He knew what those sounds were. Only one thing sound like that... fists against flesh. Daylon's senses heightened and he raced after Ivy. Sam, Rigor and Holland were at his back. They picked up the smell of anger in the air. It smelled like burnt hair. Daylon smelled Ivy's fear, too. It was sharp and unpleasant, like rotten meat. Fuck, that's not Ivy, Daylon thought. It's... Sam? A sharp cry sounded, drawing his attention away from Sam. Daylon ran faster, desperate to catch Ivy. She had no idea what she was walking in on. How the hell can she move so fucking fast? Daylon thought. Ivy slid to a stop in the door of the sun room, Daylon nearly knocking her off her feet. Sam, Rigor and Holland plowed into Daylon. Dolmas was the source of the anger, the smell that offended the nose. Ivy's mother, Mary, was being beaten by Dolmas. Her hair was a wild tangled mess. Her shirt was ripped at the shoulder and barely hanging on her body. One eye was blackened and swollen shut. Blood dripped from her nose. Her lip was busted, and blood collected in the corner of her mouth. There were bruises on her upper arms, and her wrists. The smell of alcohol permeated the room. Ivy screamed as her father back-handed Mary, knocking her against the wall. Memories rushed through Ivy's mind, the main one being of him doing the same thing to her not long ago. "You son of a bitch!" Ivy yelled. "Get your fucking hands off my mom!" "Well, lookie here, if it isn't the little bitch. Look Mary, the little whore you spawned has returned. I'm not taking her back Daylon; you fucked her by now I'm sure, so you're stuck with her. I'd suggest slapping her around to make her mind. Works wonder with her useless bitch of a mother." "You fucking bastard-" Daylon snarled, his wolf rushing to the forefront, fighting for control. Daylon barely noticed that Sam was leaning down to Mary, gently checking for a pulse, tears in his eyes. Daylon never finished what he was saying because his mate howled... and it was full of sound and fury. The sound knocked Daylon out of his transformation. Everyone stood frozen as Ivy started the transformation process. The loud popping sounds echoed in the silent room as everyone watched Ivy. Once again Ivy changed, but instead of the regal wolf that Daylon had seen the night before, there now stood a huge wolf that was nearly as big as his own, and pissed out of its mind. "Oh my fucking god..." Daylon breathed, remembering that another wolf he knew had the ability to bulk up when maddened. To be continued... * * * * Shock froze everyone in place. There, where his mate once stood, was a gigantic, pissed-off she-wolf that didn't look anything like the exquisite, delicate wolf from last night. Her glossy coat was a deep, chocolate brown. Her eyes, a deep mustard yellow, were narrowed in anger. Shreds of the clothes, ripped apart as she transformed, surrounded Ivy. A low rumble sounded in the room. It took Daylon a second to realize the sound was coming from Ivy. Gaining in volume, it erupted out from Ivy in a barrage of snarls, growls and a volley of vicious, angry barks. All the pent up anger and fear Ivy kept buried through the years flooded out of her in one long, frightening emotion. Daylon got a firsthand glimpse of her long, deadly canines' from her continuous barking. The loud and menacing sounds raised the hair on the back of Daylon's neck. The ominous sounds were deafening in the small room, and sweat dripped down his back. Only one thought rang in his mind, beating in tune with the sound of his pounding heart... shit, shit, shit. I know that form. Aw hell, the place will look like a blood-bath when she's done! The murderous intent in Ivy's eyes was clear. Her body was low to the ground; her ears laid back, her tail still. Her back legs were bunched signifying she was ready to pounce. Dolmas stood unmoving in the center of the room, his alcohol soaked brain unable to comprehend what was before his eyes, or, more importantly, the danger he faced. There was no sound, no movement as time ground to a halt for a brief second. And he knew he was alone, no one to help. Both his sons had left earlier. Sam, huddled close to Mary, stared in disbelief. She slumped against the wall, stunned by the hit from Dolmas. Rigor and Holland stood still, wary of drawing the she-wolf's attention. The sounds brought both Caleb and Kern into the room at a dead run, only to freeze when they saw the wolf in the middle of the room. Quickly Kern took in the scene, his eyes traveling around the room, trying to figure out what was going on. "Who the hell is that?" Kern asked. Daylon held up a hand in warning for them to stay still, and quiet. "Ivy?" Daylon spoke quietly, breaking the silence. "Sweetie, can you hear me?" Both Caleb's and Kern's mouths dropped open. Ivy turned her head, snarled at her brothers, and then locked eyes with Daylon. For a moment he saw nothing in those eyes but death. A slight chill ran up Daylon's back. There was no sign of humanity in those eyes, only an animalistic need to kill, to rip apart, to... devastate. And pain. Years of pain that bubbled nastily under the surface, like a volcano ready to spew. "Mother fucker," Dolmas whispered, drawing Ivy's attention back to him. "Do you want to die?" Daylon swore quietly. "Shut the hell up and let me deal with-No!" Ivy launched herself at Dolmas, using her body weight to knock him to the floor. Dolmas fought, swinging wildly with his fists as Ivy mauled him with her sharp claws. Blood spurted from the cuts that blossomed across his arms as he tried to protect his face. Ivy used her weight to pin Dolmas to floor as she attacked. Daylon stood stunned by the aggression Ivy showed. Her attack was fast and furious... and deadly, very deadly. It was over almost before it begun. The long, deadly canines, capable of ravaging delicate tissue, were inches from his throat. Snarling, Ivy prepared to deliver the killing blow. Just then, Mary, Ivy's mother, moaned slightly, and then gasped when she saw what was happening, stopping Ivy. "No baby," Mary moaned, her voice distorted from the bruises around her throat. "He's not worth it." The she-wolf's ear twitched, and her head slowly turned to face Mary. The momentary flash of heartache across Ivy's face reassured Daylon that Ivy was in there, buried below the surface. This was the distraction Daylon needed. Quickly he stepped to Ivy and dropped to his knees next to her. Aware that there was a possibility he could be attacked he gently ran his hand across her back, feeling the muscles ripple under his touch. "My beauty," Daylon said softly, stroking the sweat-soaked matted fur. "If you want to kill him for what he's done to you and your mom, we won't try to stop you. Fuck yes, he deserves it, Ivy. But be sure you, not this form, want to do this. It's hard taking a life; it's something that always stays with you, no matter what. I'd know." A low snarl greeted Daylon's remarks. Ivy leaned in closer. Her lips pulled back showing her sharp white canines, inches from Dolmas' face. A deep growl started in the back of her throat and exploded in a terrifying snarl. Ivy lunged... and snapped those deadly teeth inches from Dolmas' throat. Dolmas' hoarse, fearful yell could be heard outside. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he fainted dead away. After a second, the she-wolf glanced farther down Dolmas' body to the wet patch spreading at his groin, and for the first time, Daylon saw a flash of Ivy's personality in those eyes. If a wolf hopped up on adrenaline and angered beyond belief could smirk, then this one damn sure just did. She stood over him for a moment, watching his chest move up and down. Kern tensed and Holland stepped next to him. "I wouldn't if I was you. Trust me when I tell you that you have no idea what she's capable of." "That's her form?" Caleb asked, shocked. "Jesus Christ, where the hell did that come from?" Rigor stood near Kern, just in case he got any ideas. "I'd try not to draw her attention if I was you. I got a feeling she's not overly fond of either of you boys." Ivy lifted her paw, and ripped the front of Dolmas' shirt. Four perfectly long cuts showed, making the point that she could have torn his chest open, if she wished. With a huff, the she-wolf stepped away from Dolmas and walked over to Mary. Tears coursed down Ivy's mother's face as she stared at her daughter, Sam crouched next to her. Mary lifted her hand, allowing the she-wolf to scent her, then Sam did the same. Tentatively, Mary ran her hand over the top of Ivy's head. "Oh baby," Mary wept, "oh Ivy." Finally she moved away from Mary, and padded over to Daylon. Ivy brushed against his leg, her low rumbles sounded like a small engine. Ivy head-butted his thigh nearly knocking Daylon off his feet, her tail wagging. Laughing, he patted her head, marveling how soft her coat was. He motioned for Rigor and Holland to greet Ivy in this form. She needed to scent them, just in case she ever made another appearance. And Daylon had an idea they hadn't seen the last of the large she-wolf that stood before them, not if previous experiences with another could be trusted. "Dear lord," Rigor said, running his hand down her back. "She's strong, Daylon. You can feel the leashed power." "Daylon? Did you know-" "I had no idea, Holland. I was as shocked as everyone else," Daylon said, then looked at Sam. "I don't think Ivy knew of this form either. She wouldn't have kept this from me. She insisted she prove she could transform before mating me. And this wasn't the wolf we saw last night." Ivy rolled onto her back, showing her underbelly in a submissive posture. Daylon sat down next to her and rubbed her belly, listening to her sounds of contentment. Holland was shocked how easy Daylon was around the huge wolf. "Uh, are you sure she knows who you are?" Holland asked, unnerved by how close Daylon was to the she-wolf. "Man, one swipe of her paw could-" "I'm not entirely sure how much control she has of this form," Daylon said. "But I do know that was a submission posture. I'm pretty sure she won't hurt me, or us." "Aw fuck, Daylon," Holland hissed. "Pretty sure? Damn it, man. You know as well as I do what she's-" "I know, Holland," Daylon replied quietly. "Christ, she's just as beautiful in this form. Big, muscular, and beautiful but so, so deadly." Ivy rolled over to her side, put a huge paw up on Daylon's knee, and focused her yellow eyes on him. "Okay, my lovely she-wolf, you need to let Ivy come back," Daylon said. "We need to talk. Can you do that for me?" The she-wolf rolled on her back, stretched lazily, then rolled back over. Her tail thumped on the ground while she made eye contact with Daylon once again. With a deep breath, the usual flash of light that signified transformation lit up the room. Daylon quickly took off his t-shirt so Ivy would have something to wear. Within seconds Ivy lay next to him, her hair a tangled mess and confusion on her face. Daylon knew the exact moment the knowledge came crashing down on her; it showed clearly in her eyes. Ivy took the t-shirt Daylon held out, and slipped it on. She stood up, and Daylon couldn't help his primitive reaction to seeing his mate in his shirt. His body hardened and he smiled slightly at how his shirt swallowed her. Ivy faced her mom. Mary's tears had slowed to a trickle, but she refused to make eye contact with Ivy. Her breathing was labored and painful. Sam gently cleaned the blood off her bruised face. A sickening feeling started in the pit of Ivy's stomach as she stared at the two of them. Their touches were much too familiar. "Mom?" Ivy said, looking at her mother. "You lied to me, didn't you?" Mary's head snapped up and her eyes grew huge. "Oh sweetie I-" Dolmas was still unconscious in the middle of the room. Both Caleb and Kern looked at her like she was a freak, not understanding the significance of what was unfolding right before their very eyes. "What the hell?" Kern shouted suddenly, stepping toward Ivy. "How dare you come here and-" Daylon moved quickly. He grabbed Kern by the throat and walked him back to the nearest wall, pinning him there. "You're going to want to watch your tone when speaking to my mate. You understand me? We didn't start this; we walked in on it. And I've about had enough of your crazy ass family, Kern. Don't push me." "You calling us crazy? Damn man, did you see her? What the fuck was that? No female gets that big," Kern yelled at Daylon. "She attacked our father... a male. You might want to keep that in mind, Daylon." "Maybe you should," Daylon snarled, rapping Kern's head against the wall. "I'd say you have more to fear than me, you piece of shit." "Everyone calm down," Rigor said. "We came to pick up Ivy's clothes and walked in on Dolmas beating Mary. Ivy reacted to that." "You had no right interfering," Caleb said, guarded by Holland. "I'm sure Dad had reasons for-" Kern sneered. "Doesn't matter why. He's the male and has every right to discipline his mate as he sees fit." "Are you fucking kidding me?" Holland asked, stunned by what he just heard. "Jesus, you people need to move out of the Middle Ages, dude. Your father was-" "He's not my father," Ivy said suddenly, then took a deep breath. "Is he, Mom?" Silence blanketed the room. Caleb and Kern stared at Ivy in horror. Slowly a look of pure revulsion crossed Kern's face as he focused on his mother. "This isn't the place to do-" "Sam's right, this isn't the time or the place to get into this," Daylon said. "Should have known," Caleb smirked, ignoring Daylon. "That explains so much." "Figures," Kern said. "Dad always said Mom was nothing but a whore. This just proves it. She's a whore and so is that freaky bastard of hers." "That's it," Daylon growled. He jerked Kern off the wall, ducked as Kern swung at him, then punched him in the stomach, bending him over. Listening to the air rush out of his lungs gave Daylon a pleasant little tingle. While Kern was bent over, he followed with an upper cut, hitting him square in the jaw. The force of the hit stood Kern straight up, and his eyes rolled back into his head. Two hits and Kern as on the floor with his dad... out cold. "You really are a waste of space, you know that?" Daylon said in disgust to the prone figure on the floor. "I feel sorry for the female that gets stuck with you. Ivy? Do the clothes mean that much to you?" Daylon stepped to Ivy and cradled her face in his hands. Ivy, startled, raised her eyes to him and Daylon could see the confusion, pain, and relief in her eyes. Could this be what was preying on her mind, Daylon thought. Did she somehow have a feeling that Dolmas wasn't her dad? Had he said something to make her think that? "Nothing's changed, my beauty," Daylon said softly. "You're still mine, and nothing could make me any happier. We'll deal with the rest at home, okay? Now, about those clothes..." Ivy closed her eyes for a moment, then let out a deep breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "I could care less about the damn clothes. I want my granny's chest though, and a few personal items." Daylon hugged her quickly and faced Rigor. "Dad? Would you go with Ivy to her room and get whatever she wants; and faster is better, okay. Then we're outta here. I'll buy you a whole new damn wardrobe later, Ivy." Rigor gently clasped Ivy by the elbow as they left together, making Ivy jump. Her surprise that Rigor touched her so willingly was obvious. "Nothing has changed on my end, either, Ivy. Things will be clearer once we get the hell out of here and can talk." Caleb watched, making no effort to hide his distaste. Daylon's hackles were slowly rising as he waited for the youngest O'Farrell to say something that would give him a reason to knock his teeth down his throat. I said I wouldn't kill them if I could help it, Daylon thought, never said anything about not beating the hell out of them. So give me a reason, pup. "All this time," Caleb said, his distaste clear. "Who's the scum that sired her, Mom? Lemma guess, you don't know, right? Or did the bastard just use you and toss your worthless ass out? Christ, and to think that Dad took you back after you left. He should have left you wherever the hell he found you." "Maybe she didn't want to come back," Daylon said. "With you two as sons and a mate like that... hell, why would she?" "She left us!" Caleb yelled. "Just took off and left us! Dad said she hooked up with some man and just walked out, abandoned us. She didn't care about us; all she cared about was fuckin' around. Dad said she was always sneaking around behind his back and-" "That's not true," Mary whispered. "I ran to get help and I had every intention of coming back for all of you but-" "You're a lying whore! Dad said-" "Enough!" Sam growled, his eyes lightening to a deep mustard yellow as he came to his feet. His wolf was close to taking over and the hint of... something filled the room; something wild, deadly, and destructive. "Death wish," Holland mumbled. "All three of them must have a damn death wish." Ivy's voice floated down the stairs as she and Rigor returned. "Sam... control it," Daylon snapped. "Fine then. I request that we take her with us," Sam said to Daylon. "I formally ask permission." "Shit," Daylon said, rubbing his forehead. "What a total cluster fuck. Yeah, yeah, granted. Probably best. I'm trying to get out of here with killing anyone." "Thank you," Sam said. "What? No! You can't take another male's mate. Do you have any idea what will happen when Dad wakes up?" Caleb demanded, stepping in front of Daylon, right in his face. "Who's gonna stop us? You?" Daylon asked, then moved closer to Caleb, itching to feel his knuckles connect with Caleb's smirking mouth. "Move before I move you." "No," Caleb said, a brief flicker of unease in his eye. "Oh yeah?" Daylon grin was ugly. "I was hoping you'd say that." Before he finished speaking Caleb threw the first punch. Daylon ducked under Caleb's wildly swinging arm, and came up with a hard shot to Caleb's chin. Daylon smiled slightly as he heard Caleb's teeth snap together hard, and had a moment to hope he'd bitten his tongue off. Grabbing Caleb's head with both hands Daylon brought his knee up while swiftly jerking Caleb's head down toward his raised knee. Daylon felt the smile cross his face as Caleb's head shot back up and his eyes rolled up. Rigor stood looking at all three of the O'Farrells out cold on the floor, shaking his head. "Fun time's over, son, let's go." Ivy approached Daylon. "Daylon? Did you mean what you said about bringing my mom? Even though it's going to cause problems?" "Is that what you want?" Daylon asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I'll deal with whatever comes our way, sweetie." "God. You're unlike any man I've ever met. Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me," Ivy said, then kissed him quickly, surprising Daylon with the small burst of affection. She turned to Mary. "Mom? You can't stay here. He's going to kill you. Please, please come with us. They're nice people, Mom. They've made me feel welcomed." "Mary, you need to leave here," Sam said, echoing Ivy. "Please come with us. You must." "But, but..." Mary looked at Sam. "What about-how will I-Where will I live? I can't just move in with my mated daughter! Besides, Dolmas will-" "Be pissed out of his mind, no doubt," Daylon replied. "I'll talk to Surlak as soon as we are back on our territory. I don't think he'll go to war with us over this; not the way this pack treats its females. We would, make no mistake. Christ, from what I've seen dirt has more value than the females of this pack. The worst I might have to do is make restitution to Dolmas for taking his mate. I have an idea he won't turn down the great pile of money this will cost." "Dear lord, you mean it, don't you?" Mary sighed. "I don't know what to say." "Say you'll come with us," Sam said. Mary stared silently at Sam. "Okay, if you're sure." "I've never been surer of anything in my life," Sam said. "And we'll deal with any repercussions from this." Rigor spoke quietly to Daylon, his tone urgent. "I think it'd be better if we're gone before they wake up since we now have one female who's injured and another one that can be damn dangerous if provoked. You understand what I'm saying, son?" "Yeah, Dad," Daylon said softly. "Sam? Will you help Mary out to the vehicles?" "Yeah. I'm going stay with her, okay, Daylon?" "Yeah, that's good. Ivy? If Holland goes with you, can you grab a few things for your mom? Just grab something fast, sweetie. I'll watch these three while you do that." "Come on, Ivy," Holland said, smiling slightly. "When he starts snapping orders it's best to get a move on." "Dad, would you put Ivy's stuff in the truck?" Daylon asked. "And I heard that, Holland." Quickly Rigor placed Ivy's meager belongings in the back of the truck and came back inside. "You know there's no guarantee that Surlak won't go to war," Rigor said. "You're taking a big chance, son." Finding Love Ch. 03 "If worse comes to worse..." Daylon said, then sighed. "Who are we kidding? If Sam gets pissed off enough, Dolmas will turn up dead. Might be the best possible answer. And I wouldn't have to kill him." "I'm surprised you haven't," Rigor said. "Well now, there's been a change in the lay of the land, hasn't there? I said I'd do my best not to kill her Dad. I think we all know that Dolmas isn't her dad, and that lets me free to kill the bastard now. That is if someone doesn't beat me to it." Ivy returned with one change of clothes for her and her mom. "I'm ready. And what happened to Caleb?" "Let's just say he didn't know when to shut up," Daylon said. Holland grinned as they left the house. "Well, one good thing came out of this." "Oh, this I got to hear," Daylon said. "We got out of going to Lowe's." * * * * A groan echoed through the debris strewn room as Kern struggled to open his eyes. His mind was telling him that something was wrong, very wrong. Flat on his back, staring up at the ceiling, Kern frowned, wondering why he was staring at the ceiling. He sat up slowly and rubbed his jaw, moving it around tenderly. His stomach ached like a Dall Ram had head-butted him, his jaw felt like he'd been hit with a sledgehammer and his head was full of mushy wet cotton. Confused and more than a little dazed, Kern focused on a foot near where he sat, and trailed up the leg until the owner came into focus. Caleb opened his eyes to find Kern staring at him, completely clueless. Kern's blank look made Caleb wonder how hard Daylon hit him. Caleb took in his brother's appearance: the bruises that were forming on his jaw, the empty look, the dried blood on the side of his mouth. Then he glanced around the room and his eyes fell on his father and reality snapped back with a ruthlessly hard hit... just like the one Daylon had thrown earlier. "Ah hell," Caleb said. "Dad? Dad? Can you hear me?" Caleb lurched to his feet, his head spinning for a moment. Moving carefully, he hurried to his father and slumped to his knees next to him. Blood was everywhere. All over Dolmas, the floor, and splatters of blood droplets ran in lazy paths, snaking their way down the wall. Caleb rested his finger on the pulse point on Dolmas' neck, and breathed easier when he felt the strong beat. "Shit." Kern voice sounded odd because his jaw was so swollen. "I feel like I went ten rounds with a kick boxing champion. What happened?" "He must have really rattled your cage," Caleb said. "The fight? Ivy attacking Dad? Mom beat to hell? Any of that ringing a bell yet?" Anger, as swift as a rising tide, flowed over Kern's face. "Son of a bitch!" Kern stumbled over to where Caleb sat next to their father. The gashes on his arms and face were healing, but Kern feared there would be scars. One long gash on Dolmas' cheek, from his eyebrow to his chin, looked particularly nasty. The cut was deep and splayed open, the skin curled back. "That's gonna leave a mark." "You think?" Caleb answered, sarcasm thick. "Jesus, he's gonna be pissed, Kern." "The trick is to focus all that anger where it belongs, and not on us. I limped for two days the last time he tore into me. I already feel like hell, I don't need him using me as a punching bag." A slight moan warned them that Dolmas was waking up. "Did you know? About Mom or Ivy?" "You're joking, right?" Kern said. "Of course I didn't know. But I bet Dad had an idea." "They took Mom," Caleb said. "Just loaded her up like they had every right and left. That one called Sam was paying particular attention to her." "Okay then, that's where we need to focus this old bastard's attention." Another low groan followed a weak cough. Dolmas' eyes fluttered open. For a second his mind was a blank and he could find no reason for both his sons to be staring at him with unease chasing around in their faces. He didn't understand why he was on the floor and... his crotch was wet? Then the pain hit, wave after wave crashing down on his body as memory rushed forward. "That little she-bitch!" Dolmas raged. "I'm going to kill her, rip her limb from limb, then I'm-" Yeah, right, Kern thought, knowing better than to voice that opinion. That's why the front of your pants are wet. She scared the piss out of you, old man. "Dad, listen to me," Kern said. "You got to calm down. The wounds are healing slowly, but it might be a good idea to shift to finish the healing. Try not to move around too much." "Where's your mother?" Dolmas snarled. "Tell her to get her fat ass in here." Both Kern and Caleb looked at each other. "Ah yeah. Um, well, you see... ah..." "What? Damn it, Kern, stop fucking around and tell me," Dolmas said. "Dad, she's not here." "What the hell do you mean? Where else would she be?" Dolmas growled, confused. "What the hell happened?" "Look, stay calm, and don't move around much, please. You're hurt and need to heal. One of the Wolfland members took her when they left." The sound that tore out of Dolmas had both brothers crab-walking backwards. Dolmas began to transform. "Time to go," Kern said, scrambling to his feet. "Shit, way to break it to him easy," Caleb said as they rushed out the door. Dolmas was in the middle of the room in wolf form. The anger that radiated off him could be felt into the other room. Snarling, shaking, the wolf attacked whatever wasn't already destroyed. His paws and teeth ripped the room apart, leaving claw marks on the floors and walls. The crunch of broken furniture drifted out to the hall. The maddened barks had Caleb edging toward the front door. In this frame of mind there was no telling what Dolmas would do to either of them. "I say we get while the getting's good," Caleb said. "Yeah, we'll come back in a while," Kern replied. "Maybe by then he'll be calmer." Both of them hurried to the door as the sounds of chaos continued in the room. Kern got in the driver seat and started his truck. "Where to?" "The nearest bar, and step on it." * * * * The silence on the drive back was deafening. No one wanted to ask the obvious question that was on everyone's mind. As they entered their territory Holland finally broke the silence. "Whose house first?" "Mine," Daylon said. "We got things we need to clear up before I deal with Surlak." Holland parked outside of Daylon's house and Sam carried Mary inside. "I think it would be better if Mary shifted, it'll speed up the healing process. Then we can talk." "Fifteen minutes," Daylon said. "The longer we wait, the worse it'll be when I contact Surlak." "Fifteen minutes sounds good," Mary said. The men left Ivy and Mary alone in the living area. Ivy held her mom's blood stained clothes as she stripped, then transformed. Her wolf looked similar to Ivy's... small, sleek, and regal. The color was nearly the same, just a touch of gray in her coat. Mary lay down on the carpet in front of a huge old fashion brick fireplace, and rested while her injuries healed. Sam stepped into the room and laid the clothes that were brought back for Mary over the couch. Voices floated out from the kitchen to Ivy. Listening to the deep tone of her mate, Ivy shivered. Now that her mind wasn't occupied by worry over her mother, it turned to other matters, namely the matter of Daylon being shirtless. His chest was a roadmap of hard defined muscles and black curly hair she wanted to explore all of a sudden. Her nipples pebbled in her shirt-his shirt-and she noticed that it smelled like him, her mate. Ivy wished he'd put a shirt on for her peace of mind. She didn't need him walking around like that, distracting her. Blowing out a breath, Ivy walked into the kitchen to find everyone around the table. "Sweetie, the clothes you grabbed are upstairs on the bed," Daylon said. "Is your mom okay?" "Yes, she's resting. I'm going to change, maybe lay down for a moment." "If it's okay, I'd like to sit with her," Sam said. Ivy looked at him for a moment. "She'd like that, I think." Sam left. Daylon stood up and moved closer to Ivy. Gently he eased her into his arms. Ivy rested her head on his chest, her arms wrapped around his waist. Rubbing his hand up and down her back, Daylon offered the comfort he knew Ivy needed. He felt her body relax into his and closed his eyes. She had been through so much, and there was no end in sight. Rigor and Holland slipped out of the kitchen. "I'm so sorry," Ivy whispered. "Ever since you laid eyes on me it's been nonstop drama. And now-" "Don't," Daylon murmured. "I wouldn't trade a second. We haven't had a chance to get to know each other yet, but don't doubt this, Ivy; I would do anything for you. You finally have someone who is here for you. All of us are here for you. Okay?" "I-I don't know exactly what I feel for-" "Sweetheart, I know you care for me. Same here. As far as the rest of it goes, don't worry about it. Things will calm down, and we'll go from there. Right now I need you to know that you can trust me to stand by you, as will my pack." "Will they, Daylon? Once they find out about-" "Will you trust me for now? Will you believe me that it won't change a thing? It won't, Ivy. Just like it doesn't change anything for me." "You've shown me over and over that you will be by my side. I've never had that. That ability to depend on someone, have someone there for me. And not just you, your whole pack. God, Daylon for the first time in my life I feel... wanted." "Oh Baby, I want you, make no mistake," Daylon whispered. "From the moment I saw you I knew that I had to find you." "I wanted you, too. I hoped you could somehow stop the mating ceremony. I knew when we met by the pond in that dream you were my mate." "Ah yeah, that pond. You have a thing for water, don't you?" "Yes, I spent so much time there. It was my escape." "Tell you what; tonight I'm going to take you to a small waterfall near the house. It has a shallow pool that is surrounded by evergreens, lush plants, and smooth rocks. It's beautiful, Ivy. It's peaceful and untouched. I'm going to make love to you there, my beauty, under the stars near the water. Short of someone declaring war on us, I promise you this." Ivy noticed everyone left the kitchen, giving her and Daylon privacy. No one stood around, listening in or making lewd comments. Daylon smiled at her and cut his eyes toward the bedroom. Ivy blushed, his message clear. He wanted her rested up for tonight. She resisted the urge to skip to the bedroom, her happiness overflowing. She knew Daylon would keep his word, if at all possible. Daylon watched Ivy leave and grabbed the back of the kitchen table chair, his knuckles white. Her hips swayed as she walked, and Daylon had to fight the urge to stalk after her, throw her over his shoulder, and carry her to the bedroom and... taking a deep breath he found another urge he had to deal with, the sudden lack of space in his jeans. Damn, he wanted to toss everyone out on their ear and go make love to his mate until she couldn't see, stand, or walk. Then he wanted to do it all again. He wanted to follow her to the bedroom, pull her into bed, and stay there for the rest of the day. Rigor and Holland chose that moment to reenter the kitchen. Holland grinned at the strained look on Daylon's face. "Not one word or I will toss your ass out the window," Daylon said. "Hey, I wasn't going to say anything," Holland said. "But now that you brought it up I'd have to say you look a bit... strained." "I got your strained right here," Daylon mumbled. "Boys," Rigor said, "you both sound like you're kids again." "I guess this is where I say 'he started it'," Daylon laughed as the tension left his shoulders, and other body parts. "And I say 'did not'," Holland laughed. About that time Ivy walked back into the kitchen, dressed in cut-off blue jean shorts and a v-neck shirt. She threw Daylon's t-shirt she had been wearing back to him. The sassy wink she tossed over her shoulder on the way back to the bedroom had his wolf sitting up, tail thumping on the ground, and paying attention. It took all Daylon had not to thump his own tail on the ground. He knew without a doubt she didn't have a bra on under that shirt, and wondered what else she didn't have on under her clothes. A strangled cough warned him that his tongue was probably hanging to his knees. "Aw damn," Holland laughed at the look on Daylon's face. "You may have finally met your match." "Yeah." Daylon's smile was slow, sly, and full of promise. Almost fifteen minutes on the dot, Mary walked in the kitchen. She had changed into the clothes that Ivy had left out for her. Her hair was loose around her shoulders, and most of the bruising was gone, nothing left behind but a faint tinge where she had been hit. Sam was by her side. Daylon went to check on Ivy to find her sprawled out across the bed, her beautiful red hair fanned out behind her. Daylon stood in the door, admiring her. As much as he hated to wake her, it needed to be done. As Daylon stepped toward the bed, Ivy suddenly opened her eyes and smiled at him. Daylon felt his heart lurch. That smile was peaceful, happy, and he wanted to see that on her face every damn day for the rest of their lives. Not saying a word, he held out his hand and Ivy let him pull her up. When they returned to the kitchen both Rigor and Holland had left. Ivy walked to her Mom. "How are you feeling?" "Better now. I'm better, sweetie," Mary said, then sighed. "So, do you want me to start talking or ask questions?" "It's your story, Mom," Ivy said. "You tell it." "Okay... My father chose Dolmas as my mate. There was no attraction between us, and I didn't want to mate with him. I had vague dreams of a man, but they were never clear, and infrequent. It was like we were looking through a broken and stained mirror at each other. Not that it mattered, he chose Dolmas because he had status in the village, and my father knew he was going places, as he called it," Mary said. "Must be something that runs in the family," Daylon said. "That's where he got the idea from. Our pack doesn't have much use for its female members, you know that. Back then, things were worse. Unfortunately, no one showed up to save me, and Dolmas and I were mated. And the abuse started immediately. He was insanely jealous and possessive. This went on for years. I gave him two sons, both healthy boys to be proud of, and I hoped that things would get better..." "They didn't, did they?" Daylon asked. "No. If anything, they got worse. He accused me of the most outlandish things, then beat me for no reason. He was always careful not to leave any marks that could be seen, or hurt me to where I was unable to perform my... duties." Sam closed his eyes for a second. "But one night he came home smelling like another woman. How dare he accuse me of everything under the sun when he was out doing the same! I said something to him, and I shouldn't have. He went into a rage unlike any I had ever seen; I honestly thought he was going to kill me." "How old were Kern and Caleb?" Ivy asked. "Two and three." "Jesus," Daylon said. "He eventually got tired of hurting me and stumbled off the bed. I shifted and healed as best I could. The next night he... well, there's no other word for it; he raped me. Didn't matter that I could hardly walk, or still hurt. Our laws say that a woman can't be raped by her mate; she's married so it's not considered rape, it's sex." "Dear god," Daylon said. "Two days later I ran. I had money I kept hidden. My mother slipped it to me before we mated, and Dolmas didn't know. Yes, I left the boys there. I thought it was for the best. I had every intention of coming back for them, but I needed time, and help. I was young, and I had no idea how hopeless the situation was," Mary said. "Where did you go?" Ivy asked. "I asked my family for help, and they, in turn, called Dolmas and told him where to find me. I ran again. Several towns and many days later I stopped overnight to rest. And then I met someone, the man who visited my dreams." "Me," Sam said. "We met in a small town near here. She was down to her last hundred dollars. I walked past her at a local fast food place and... knew." "I know that feeling," Daylon said. "It knocks the breath out of you for a second." "Exactly," Sam said, and took Mary's hand. "The next couple of days were the best in my life. I'd found my mate, and we planned to be together even though I was mated to someone else. We were going to get my boys and run away together. Ivy, you were conceived during that time. Sam is your biological father." "Would either of you be shocked if I said I'd figured that out already? Just seeing how the two of you are together told me all I needed to know," Ivy said. "What I really want to know about is this other form." "Well, simply put, it's a mutated gene that runs in my family. It pops up from generation to generation. My father carried the gene, but couldn't shift into the other form. The telepathy doesn't seem to be something connected to the ability to shift. My father could communicate telepathically, as can I. But I can shift, and he can't," Sam said. "Sorry, Mary, I didn't mean to interrupt." "It's okay. Anyway, everything was planned out. We were staying at a cheap motel on the outskirts of town. Sam left to buy some groceries. And then things went to hell." "Let me guess, Dolmas found you," Daylon said. "Yes. He busted in the motel door. He had seen Sam and me together and he used my feelings against me. The things he said to me, the names he called me, and, god, the anger. I panicked. I was scared to death the eight mercenaries' he brought with him would kill Sam. He told me I could either come home, raise his sons, or the man that just left would die. I didn't really have a choice; I left with him." Sam shook his head at Ivy's stunned look. "Ivy, your mother was young, scared, and to be honest... she was very naive. The amount of guts it took for her to run still amazes me. Plus Dolmas is a consummate liar. She didn't know I was more than capable of taking care of myself, especially if I'm pissed. The form you shifted into is from me." "Well, I've got a question," Daylon said. "Why did our pack not go after her? I know my dad; he would have burned that village down looking for the one you considered your mate." "I wasn't part of your pack yet, Daylon. I had just been kicked out of mine because of my ability. Not the ability to shift, but the telepathy. They considered that more of a freakish trait than my ability to shift into two different forms," Sam laughed ruefully. "Well, they were idiots," Daylon said. Sam shook his head. "I could shift into a form that was wildly dangerous, and that was just fine with them. But being able to get into someone's mind? Well, that freaked them the hell out. I didn't join your pack until five years later, and by then... it was too late." "Why was it too late," Ivy asked. "I still worried that Sam could be hurt. But his main threat was to hurt you, sweetie. He knew you were special to me. I love my boys, but they have grown up just like their dad," Mary said. "He must have had an idea," Daylon said. "Why else use that for a threat?" "Because he's an all out bastard," Sam said. "Anyway, that night I returned with Dolmas, he... claimed his marital rights. Not long after that I found out I was pregnant. I let him think you were his child, and you could have been, Ivy. Until you shifted this afternoon, I couldn't be sure. You take after my side of the family in looks. You don't look like Dolmas or Sam. Until lately Dolmas never had much to do with you. That changed as you got closer to coming of age." Finding Love Ch. 03 "Ivy, just curious, but have you ever been able to pick up other people's thoughts?" Sam asked. "No, never." "Well, it may be possible that all you inherited from me is the ability to shift into a larger form when really, really mad. My wolf is regular size, like most male wolves. And then there is that big bastard that comes out when I'm pushed too far, and it is dangerous. But yours seems to listen to Daylon, thank god." "The horror stories I could tell you," Daylon said. "That damn shape is uncontrollable and dangerous. It's never gone after one of my warriors, but they are all afraid of it." "I have little control in that form. I'm aware, but the anger rules me. It's like all inhibitions are thrown out the window when I shift into that form. Daylon is the only one that wolf will listen to, and only because he is the Alpha," Sam said. "Do you have any more questions, Ivy?" Mary asked. "Yes," Ivy said to Sam. "What do I call you?" Sam looked at Mary then Ivy. "I think that choice is up to you. But I'll be happy with Sam if that's easier for you. And Ivy, I don't blame your mother. She did what she thought was best." "How about we start with Sam and go from there?" "That sounds good to me." "Did you know I was your daughter?" Ivy asked. "I'd heard Mary gave birth, and knew the timing could be right. But she wasn't allowed off their land Ivy, and she was never alone after Dolmas brought her back. Did I know for sure? No. Even when I connected with you in that tiny little room of yours when your father tied you to the bed, I didn't know," Sam said. "I did know you were Daylon's mate." "Okay, now that I know the story, I need to make a call to Surlak," Daylon said. "I'm going to my office to do this; I'll be back when it's done." * * * * Dolmas stood in what was left of the sun room. He had worked the worst part of the blinding anger out, and now just coldness enveloped him. Throwing the empty beer bottle across the room, he listened as it shattered against the broken coffee table, his anger spiking again because Mary wasn't here to clean up the mess. He should have known that whore he was mated to couldn't resist running back to that freak of hers. Grabbing another beer, he raised it to his lips. He plotted how he would get revenge on all of them, but one in particular would pay, he would make sure of it. His stomach clinched as he remembered the wetness in front of his pants when he woke up. He was a strong, deadly man who had people owing him favors all over the world. He could snap his fingers and several people he knew would run to do his bidding. He was hated and feared by many, he had power untold... and, and, his mind whispered to him, a small, red-headed young woman had caused him to piss himself. It was unthinkable that a weak-kneed, good-for-nothing but fucking, empty-headed bitch of a whore made him... he couldn't think about it. His pride and ego rebelled at the thought. She would pay, that bastard she mated who thought he was a big shot would pay... They'll all pay, Dolmas thought darkly as ideas formed in his mind. They'll wish they had never fucked with the likes of me. Wolfland Pack leader? Ha! He's nothing more than a pussy; a stupid little pussy-whipped pup. I'll rip his head off and- A knock at the door interrupted his ramblings. Snarling in anger he strode through the demolished kitchen and ransacked living area. Jerking open his front door he came face-to-face with his Alpha. "Surlak," Dolmas stuttered. "What-what are you doing here?" "I just got off the phone with the Alpha of the Wolfland Pack and he told me what went on here today." "I was just coming to see you," Dolmas lied. The thought never crossed his mind. "He stole my mate! This, on top of ruining the mating ceremony I had planned for my daughter. I want to declare war on them. They can't just come on our territory and do things like this; it makes you... us... look weak," Dolmas blustered. Surlak held up his hand. "Stop. This isn't about how my pack looks. It's about how you look. I warned you long ago to release Mary when she ran. And I've stayed out of your affairs, against my better judgment. Any mate that desperate shouldn't be forced back." "But, but, the insult to me... us... I mean our pack... He has my mate and ruined my daughter's chance for a-" "I am not done. Daylon told me you are not Ivy's father; that they walked in on you beating Mary... said you were out of control. I know all that happened, Dolmas. And I don't appreciate not being appraised of what's going on in my own pack. I am not going to war over... this." "But, when is he bringing Mary back? He stole my mate, Surlak. He has to pay." "He did not; she went willingly. He even offered restitution." "How much? How much did you bleed him for? By god, they're wealthy and can afford to pay top dollar." Surlak stared at Dolmas. "Did you not hear what I just said? She went willingly. He didn't steal anything so why would I make him pay? She is there of her own free will. I told him that no money was needed; there was no theft." "You what?" Surlak's eyes turned a bright yellow. "Careful. You are in no shape to challenge me. This is over now. Do you hear me, Dolmas? This ends now." "I hear you," Dolmas said. What Surlak didn't hear was agreement. * * * * "Mom, you're staying here tonight, stop arguing with me." "But, you and Daylon are newly mated! I can't stay here; you need your privacy." "Okay. Then you can say with Sam." "Ivy! I can't just move in on him. And at my age, too," Mary gasped. "Besides, what makes you think he'd want me to?" "I can't believe you just asked me that with a straight face. That man would carry you to his house if you asked. And no, I have no idea where he lives, not that it matters. Mom, you deserve to be happy." "I-It's been a very long time, Ivy. We're strangers now." "He asked permission to bring you back, Mom. I know you need time, but that says something. And you still care for him; I can see it in your face." "Of course I do," Mary said. "But things have change, Ivy. I've changed." "No, you've been abused," Ivy said. "Big difference. Just give him a chance, give yourself a chance." "I'll try." "Mom, did you know about his ability to shift into another form?" "He told me, yes. I never saw that other form. He told me he was able to protect me, but I didn't know, didn't understand. But then again, a shot to the brain and it wouldn't matter what he could transform into," Mary said. Mary was standing in the guest bedroom with Ivy. Daylon had told both her and Sam that Surlak wouldn't be causing trouble and he wouldn't be fined for taking Mary with them. Nothing had been said about how Dolmas responded, but Mary knew they hadn't heard the last of him, and told Daylon so after he finished speaking with Surlak. She was pleasantly surprised to know that they were on the same page concerning Dolmas. "Would you like to stay for dinner, Sam?" Ivy asked as they returned to the kitchen. "Daylon said he was going to cook some hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill." "I'd like that," Sam said. "Mary? That okay with you?" "Oh yes, I'd like to... catch up." "I would, too," Sam said, his voice husky. Mary flushed, then smiled. Dinner, served outside, was nice and relaxed, the time flying swiftly. Ivy couldn't remember ever having dinner out on the patio at home. Both males were at ease and happy, the feeling around the table was so peaceful. Laughter echoed as Sam and Daylon picked on each other. No snarls or angry looks here. No harsh comments were made about dinner, or about how useless she or her mother was... it was one of the most enjoyable meals Ivy had ever experienced. Dusk was falling when Sam invited Mary to watch a movie at his house. A slight blush spread over Mary's fair skin as she accepted. Daylon gave Sam a spare key and told him that he and Ivy were going to the waterfall and wouldn't be back until later, much later. After Sam and Mary left, Daylon grabbed a small tote and packed it with a large blanket, some bath towels, and a couple of drinks. "Are we walking there?" "I planned on taking the four-wheeler, but we can walk if you want." "No, let's ride, it'll save time. We can walk around when we get there," Ivy said. "Then let's go," Daylon said. "It won't take long." The land was hilly around Daylon's house and as they bumped along Ivy wrapped her hands around his waist, her braless tits rubbing against Daylon's back. She grinned slightly as he stiffened. Feeling mischievous, she let her hands drift a little lower. Leaning her cheek against his back, she slipped her hands under his shirt and rested them on the waistband of his jeans. The tight muscles of his stomach flexed, and she plainly heard the low growl that went through him. She giggled slightly as she wrestled with the top snap of his jeans. Daylon sucked his stomach in and she finally got the top button undone. Ivy swore that Daylon stopped breathing for a moment when she brushed her fingers against hard, naked flesh. "Jesus..." "Don't let go of those handlebars, Daylon. Wouldn't want to wreck before we get there," Ivy whispered in his ear. "Ivy, sweetheart, you're playing with a loaded gun." Daylon groaned as she moved her hand deeper into his jeans, stroking his throbbing shaft. "Is it going to go off?" "Damn, it just might." "Hmm, maybe it needs a little more room then." "What's room got to do with-oh shit!" Ivy grasped both sides and tugged sharply. The button fly jeans spread open and Ivy had her hands full of damp, warm cock. She ran her finger over the top of his dick, and felt it twitch. Precum was leaking, wetting his shaft. She rubbed the head again and Daylon moaned, his body arching into her grip. Ivy marveled at how such a simple touch affected him, making his body shake and twist. Wrapping her hand around his shaft, she moved up and down that hard column, going slowly. Her touch was innocent, inexperienced, and driving him crazy. Daylon was afraid he'd blow his load before he could stop himself; her touch affected him like no other. He was hard, the length overflowing her hand, but the skin was silky smooth. "Ivy, oh god, squeeze harder." "I don't want to hurt you." "You won't, aw damn, trust me, you won't. Please, Baby." Ivy took a firmer hold, squeezed, and Daylon jerked so hard he nearly threw them off the ATV in his excitement. A breathless laugh sounded as he shook his head at his lack of control. He asked for it, by god. She was squeezing harder now, but still going slow. And he was going out of his mind. Her other hand crept up his chest, a light touch that raised goose bumps over his skin as her fingers trailed up toward his nipples. A sudden pinch and Daylon eye's nearly crossed. He had no idea his nipples were so sensitive. Ivy's finger rolled his nipple and the pleasure arrowed straight to his dick, making him groan. "Do you like that?" "Damn. Yeah, I do. I never knew-" "How much longer until we're there?" "Around the next corner, thank fuck." "You in a rush to get there?" Ivy grinned as she rubbed her cheek on his back. "Baby, you're going to make me explode before I'm ready." "Well, can't have that. Guess I better slow down even more." "You're killing me, you know that, right?" Ivy was still laughing softly, and stroking that wonderfully hard dick, teasing those tight nipples, when the waterfall came into view. The lights from the ATV lit up the area. It was everything Daylon said, and so much more. Water fell gently over a small rocky cliff and pooled in a small, shallow pond. Evergreens grew close to the water, providing shade in the day. He had solar lights that provided soft light close to the water's edge. Lush bushes flowered in the darkness and sweet smelling night blooming plants like four o'clocks and moon flowers made a serene escape Ivy fell in love with immediately. "Dear god, Daylon. It's beautiful. Did you make this?" "No. I did add a few things, but this is all natural." Daylon parked the ATV, turned it off, and helped Ivy off. The moon shown overhead, providing a silvery light. An area near the pond was level and manicured. Ivy couldn't resist, she kicked off her shoes so she could feel the grass between her toes. He spread the blanket out and, kneeling, held his hand out to Ivy. There, in the soft moonlight, Ivy looked upon a strong man, kneeling, waiting for her, hand out, and promises in his eyes. Dropping to her knees, she wrapped her arms around his neck. Staring up at him, she ran her hand through his dark hair. Daylon toyed with the bottom of her t-shirt as his tongue traced over her lips. He slowly pulled her shirt up, easing the fabric higher, until her perky tits were uncovered, exposing her to the warmth of the night. With a gentle nudge, she helped him pull her shirt off. Ivy caught a quick grin as he swung her down on the blanket, coming to rest over her. Resting his head on his hand, he smoothed her hair away from her face. "Open Sweetheart." Nipping Ivy's bottom lip, Daylon growled lightly as she opened, letting his tongue in to explore her mouth. His free hand began to caress Ivy's stomach, inching closer to an aching nipple. "Yes, oh please, touch me," she whispered quietly into his mouth, desperate for him to touch her nipples. "Mmm, is this what you want?" Daylon asked as his fingers tugged on a hard, pert nipple. The shockwaves arrowed straight to her pussy, making Ivy squirm on the blanket. Slowly his hand drifted down to her jean shorts and rubbed. Moans fell from Ivy's lips as he unbuttoned her jeans and slipped his hand inside. His mate didn't have a stitch of underwear on. Time lost all meaning as his fingers rubbed her clit, pinching it gently. Head thrashing back and forth, she grasped the blanket. Ivy began to rock her hips as Daylon stroked her faster. "Let's get these shorts off you." "Me? You're still pretty much dressed, and that's not fair." "Any suggestions?" Daylon grinned. "Stand up... my mate." Daylon got to his feet, a thrill running through him at her words. It was the first time she had called him that. His throbbing dick loved it. Ivy, on her knees, pulled his jeans down. Kicking off his shoes, he stepped out and froze as Ivy looked up at him, the innocent desire shinning in her eyes. She grasped that long, hard cock and pulled it away from his belly. The head was swollen, and precum coated the top of his dick. Ivy licked at the precum, opened her mouth, and swallowed the head while running her tongue around the shaft. Daylon buried his hands in her hair, not to push her farther down, but to steady himself. His mate was on her knees, topless, with only her shorts on and Daylon very nearly came for seeing her so wild, free, and Christ, so fucking sexy. Her mouth was warm, wet, and pushing Daylon to his limit much too fast. Then she rolled his balls and he stars exploded in his mind. "Ah, ah, damn, that's good, so good. Jesus, your mouth... Baby, please..." Ivy took as much as she could into her mouth, stopping before her gag reflex triggered. The low moans and quivering body above her told how close Daylon was to coming. Privately, she was amazed that she could bring him this close to losing control so fast, and a warm feeling of... maybe pride... made her wetter. To know that she brought her mate—a strong, self-assured male—to the point of near begging did wonders for her own self-esteem. She sucked harder, sealing her lips around his shaft, and... hummed. Fingers clutched in her hair as Daylon trembled. He held Ivy tightly for a moment before finally releasing her hair, mumbling under his breath about how the hell she could drive him to the brink so damn fast. Panting, Daylon tried to bring his rampaging body under control. He was gasping for air and the ability to recall his own name was beyond him. Then she teased his slit and his balls pulled up tight. "Oh god, Ivy, stop. I'm going to come!" Ivy pulled off, the soft popping sound of his dick leaving her soft mouth echoing around them, her lips slightly swollen, and red. Daylon looked at her and his wolf howled with the need to claim her, to be buried in her warmth, to become one with her, if only for a moment. His hand touched her cheek, and Ivy turned her face into the caress. Daylon dropped to the blanket and urged her to lie back, jerking her shorts off quickly, and moving between her legs. He wanted to taste her, have her scent in his nose and her juices on his lips, to watch her thrash and beg for him to stop, then beg for him not to stop. Her small, tight nipples called to him, and unable to resist, he lowered his head, his hands braced around her waist. The tight little nub hardened more as he sucked, the other hand twisting the neglected nub while his dick rubbed her clit. "Oh, oh-h, Daylon... it-it..." A pleasurable ache crashed through Ivy. It didn't really hurt, but her legs felt restless, and her body wanted to move, to shift around, to... writhe. She wasn't sure if she wanted him to stop, slow down, or suck harder. Unsure, a little afraid of the feelings, Ivy whimpered. Daylon heard the confused sound and lifted his head. "It's okay, Baby. Don't be afraid of the feelings." Daylon ran a finger across her lips. Slowly drawing a finger into her mouth, she teased it, running her tongue up and down the long digit. "Get the others wet, too." One finger at a time entered her mouth as she sucked them. Ivy closed her eyes as his fingers eased in her mouth, then pulled out, mimicking another in-and-out action. Panting, Ivy could smell his scent as he released her mouth and moved that warm, moist hand down to her pussy. Shifting her legs wide, he entered her slowly with one finger, little at a time. Stroking her faster, twisting his finger around, he watched her face for pain. Another finger entered and scissored open, preparing the way. He ran his thumb over her swollen clit and Ivy screamed; the shock worked her closer and closer to orgasm. "Close." "Not yet, not quite yet." Moving down her body, he spread her legs wide, feeling her muscles tremble. She was wet, glistering, and swollen. Lowering his head, his tongue teased her clit, bringing small, sweet gasps from her lips. Thrusting his tongue deep inside, he felt her body shake and tighten up. Her legs squeezed shut against his head, and Daylon smiled, his face buried in her pussy. Another harsh gasp sounded as he eased a finger inside while his tongue teased her clit. "In me... please! Daylon, need you in me." Daylon licked up her pussy one more time, and decided she was hot enough for his favorite position. "Hands and knees, Sweetheart." Ivy's eyes widened as she looked at Daylon. After a moment she rolled over and moved into position, feeling strange, but sexy. His hands ran over her bottom and a soft curse sounded behind her. "Beautiful, absolutely beautiful," Daylon growled, holding her slim hips in his hands, steadying her as his dick eased inside, the heat and wetness stealing his breath. The tightness made him fight to keep from coming immediately. Thrusting slowly, giving her a chance to adjust, Daylon waited. When she began to thrust back, he knew she was ready. His speed increased as he ground harder into her, soft moans telling him that she needed more. Their bodies moved together, sweating, thrusting; pleasure spreading... when suddenly Daylon stretched over Ivy, his eyes lightening to bright yellow, fangs extending. She pressed back, seeking that part of him that she wanted to pound her so badly, only to have him sink his teeth viciously into the fleshy area between her neck and shoulder. Ivy screamed at the sharp, unexpected pain, jack-knifing under him as pleasure exploded from Daylon's mating bite. The pleasure was unlike anything Ivy had ever felt. Finding Love Ch. 04 Thanks to my editor sleeplessgurl. Thank you everyone for the comments and emails on chapter 3. As always, they are deeply appreciated. I hope everyone enjoys chapter 4 even though I'm afraid this may be a bit shorter than normal. The Mississippi River-if you live in the States then you probably know about this mess-is flooding and things have been tense at work. I do have plans for two series to arc off this with 'Finding' in their titles. It will be about two certain half-brothers and their lives. This is a copyrighted work of fiction by the author durablue. All rights reserved. * Chapter 4 Ivy smiled, and held her arms out. Daylon picked her up and carried her into the water. The look of bliss, of happiness, told Daylon how much Ivy loved the water. She hugged him hard, then swam out to explore the falls, her movements carefree. This was their time; there would be time enough to worry about Dolmas, her step-brothers, Mary and Sam... right now he wanted to hold his mate and forget, just for a while. Daylon knew that Dolmas wouldn't forget the humiliation handed to him by Ivy, and he worried about how to protect his mate and the ones she cared for. He had good reason to be worried. * * * * Dolmas watched Surlak walk away. "How dare he show up here and lay his judgment down on me about how things are going to be," Dolmas snarled to himself. And to find out there would be no restitution for Mary being... He growled and for a brief moment control wavered and Dolmas' wolf strained at the leash, yearning to break free. For one wolf to turn his back on another was the ultimate insult as far as Dolmas was concerned. How dare Surlak turn his back on him? Control slipped farther, his eyes lightened, and his wolf snarled in anger. Who did Surlak think he was dealing with? "By god, we need a new leader, one who is strong and fearless, someone who will take our pack and turn them into a name to be feared... someone like... me." The more Dolmas thought about it, the more convinced he became. Clenching his fists, Dolmas wrestled his wolf back under control. He'd deal with Surlak later; right now he needed to focus his attention on what mattered most... her. The bastard child he raised, the one who caused him such humiliation, that freak who was responsible for him.... he couldn't think about it. His mind refused to accept what he felt, down toward his crotch, when he woke up. Dolmas walked back in the house and started cleaning up the tattered remains of furniture. His anger rose again. Mary should be there to clean up this mess. That thought led to where she was, what she doing, and with whom. More dark thoughts entered his mind, and he began to plot. Hours later headlights flashed across the yard, and Dolmas watched the pickup truck park in the drive. Kern and Caleb stepped from the truck, both the worse for wear. They approached the house, moving with the exaggerated carefulness of someone looking for danger. Dolmas opened the door, backlit by the room's light. Kern and Caleb stood frozen, eyes glued on Dolmas. Both scanned his body language, trying to read him. "Where have you boys been?" "We, ah, we went to the local watering hole and, ah..." "What Caleb is trying to say is we went out and had a few drinks," Kern said. "We figured you wanted to be alone for a while." All three men stood silently, eyeing each other. Dolmas scanned their appearance, noting that while they were battered and bruised, neither seemed drunk. Thankfully they had their wits about them. Dolmas motioned for them to come inside, then turned and walked out into the room. Caleb looked at Kern and shrugged. Both followed their father inside the house. "Help me clear away the debris, then we need to decide what to do about this situation," Dolmas said. "Ah, Dad, we ran into Surlak in town. He said you agreed to drop this whole deal." Kern was holding what was left of the coffee table. "I never agreed to that," Dolmas said. "The simple minded old fool actually believes I'm going to take this kind of insult. Well, I'm not. So get busy cleaning, then we got plans to make." Several hours later the house was cleaned, the broken furniture removed, and Kern lay in bed. His door opened, and Caleb slipped inside. "You awake?" "Yeah, what's up?" Kern asked as Caleb shut the door. "I'm worried. I've never seen Dad like this. What he was talking about..." "I know. Trouble with a capital T. But I don't know what to do. If we don't stand with him... Caleb, things are going to get bad." Kern rubbed his hands over his face. "Do you really think he means to do what he said?" "God help us both, but yeah," Kern said. "This could cost us our lives'." Caleb stared at the floor. "I don't want to die, Kern, especially over things that we know nothing about." "Look, try to stay away from the old man as much as possible. I'll... think of something." "What?" "I have no idea," Kern said, and sighed. "Go on to bed. We have to go to Lowe's tomorrow for some sheetrock. Maybe a new day will bring some new options... and all that shit." "Yeah, maybe. Night." Kern watched his younger brother leave. Sleep was a long time in coming. As far as he could see, there were no easy answers here. * * * * Mary and Sam walked hand-in-hand to his house. "Any particular movie you want to see?" Sam asked. "You used to have a thing for action movies, if I remember correctly." "Oh Sam, I haven't watched a movie in ages, so it doesn't matter to me. But..." Sam grinned. "Yeah?" "Has that new movie, with the fast cars, come out on DVD yet? You know, it has that actor with the bald head and sexy voice." "I know the one, and I do have it. Is that what you want to watch? Not a nice romance?" "Yes, that one. Frankly the romance movies... well, real life never works like that," Mary said quietly. "Mary..." Sam rubbed a head over his head. "True love does exist. Sometimes, well, sometimes things get in the way, but—" "That's one way of putting it. Let's not talk about the past, Sam. I don't want to ruin this by going over old, horrible memories." "Neither do I, but Mary, I want to see you." "We can't just pick up where we left off, Sam. It doesn't work that way. You don't know what my life was like all those years. I've changed." "As have I. We're both older now, but Mary... can you tell me that spark is no longer there? If it isn't I'll back off and leave you alone." Sam stopped on the sidewalk, and looked at their joined hands, and raised an eyebrow. "I-I-I..." Mary blushed. "I still have feelings for you, Sam. I always have, but I need time, time to find myself again. I don't know who I am anymore." "That's all I wanted to hear. I'll give you as much time as you need, just don't shut me out. And this time... trust in me Mary. We haven't heard the last from Dolmas. I need to know you won't let him bully you back to him in an attempt to keep me or Ivy safe. Can you promise me you'll let us handle this situation?" "Yes. I was young and foolish before. I will never go back to him. Never. I will miss my sons, but they hate me now. Do you have any idea what it's like for your own flesh-and-blood to despise... Oh, Sam, I'm sorry, I forgot," Mary said, turning pale. Sam tugged gently on her hand, and they resumed walking. "Yes, I know what it's like for your family to turn its collective back on you. We do have that in common. But Mary, you have me, and Ivy. And over time you'll have more. Our pack is very loving, and they will accept you if given the chance." Mary walked next to Sam, but didn't reply. "You have to give them the chance, though," Sam said, and shook Mary's hand gently. "I'll try, Sam. It's hard for me to trust." Several more minutes passed as they walked along, enjoying the warmth of the night. Sam stopped in front of a small, but well kept house. Solar lights marked the walk-way to the house. The bushes were lush and green, the yard nicely mowed, and flowering plants circled the mature trees in the front. Hanging baskets of plants swung gently on the front porch, a riotous of color exploding from the baskets. Two white Adirondack wood chairs sat on the porch with a wooden table between them. "My goodness, this is your house?" Sam grinned. "Yes, I live here, and yes, I did all this. Daylon and Holland like to poke fun at me for having a green thumb, but, well... I like digging around in the dirt. I seem to have a way with growing things, of persuading them to open and bloom for me." Mary blushed again. She hadn't blushed this much in... she didn't know when. Was that last remarked aimed at her? She resisted the urge to fan herself. Sam was still the gentleman she remembered, but now there lurked a... sensuality that hadn't been there before. And Mary was slightly ashamed at the brief flash of jealousy she felt when she saw the front yard. At first glance, it screamed of a woman's touch to Mary. "It's beautiful, Sam. I can't wait to see the inside." "Then follow me." The inside of the house was as well kept as the outside. It was comfortable, and homey. Sam put the movie in and popped a bag of popcorn. "What would you like to drink? I've got Coke, Dr. Pepper, and Sprite. Any of that sound good?" Mary breathed a sigh of relief... no alcohol. "A Coke sounds good." Sam returned with a bowl full of popcorn, and put it on the table. He went back to the kitchen and got the drinks. Sitting down on the couch, he started the movie. Occasionally their hands bumped as they ate. The credits rolled for the movie and Sam scooted closer to Mary. After a little time passed he casually put his hand on the back of the couch, and Mary grinned. "That wasn't your most subtle move." "Yeah, I'm out of practice, I'm afraid," Sam said. "Is this okay?" "Perfectly okay," Mary said and leaned her head over onto Sam's shoulder. The rest of the movie was spent in that position. Sam was careful to respect the boundaries Mary set, and Mary was able to relax. No one was yelling, cussing or drinking. She noticed Sam hadn't offered anything alcoholic to drink, nor had he drank anything. Sam played with a strand of her hair as he watched the movie, a simple gesture that spoke of caring. Mary had tensed when he first lifted a stand of her hair, as if she almost expected him to yank it. She had to remind herself that Sam wasn't Dolmas, and an easy gesture such as that wasn't the prelude to something darker. Once she relaxed she enjoyed the movie, enough that she fell asleep against his shoulder. Sam smiled. If she was comfortable enough to let her guard down and fall asleep, then a numb shoulder was well worth the cost. He noticed she stiffened when he stroked her hair. He purposely kept the touch light, and non-threatening. Every little step was worth the wait as far as he was concerned. * * * * Ivy splashed water at Daylon, giggled and swam away. "Imp." "You're just mad I got you in the face," Ivy called over her shoulder. She swam to the other side of the pool. "Besides... Daylon? Daylon, where are you?" Ivy scanned the water, but didn't see him. She stood up, looking across the smooth surface of the water. Where did he go? Something brushed against her knee and Ivy screamed. Daylon exploded out of the water behind her, and wrapped his arms around her waist. "Hold your breath!" He yelled as he pulled them both over. "You..." Ivy inhaled deeply. Once under the water he let her go. Ivy surfaced, flicked her long, wet hair out of the way, and glared at Daylon. "...maniac." "You started it," Daylon grinned. "You will pay..." Ivy cackled like a witch making Daylon snort. "And when you least expect it... bam! I'll pounce and revenge will be mine!" "Is this where, in a high sotto voice, I say, 'The horror, the horror!'" Daylon snickered. "Honey, I ain't no bubble headed blond with big breasts that walks into the cellar in the dark in a B movie." "I hate those movies. No one is that stupid." Ivy laughed. "And they always pick on the blonds!" Daylon eyed Ivy. "But you know, with your hair all wet and stringy, and the moonlight shinning on your pale skin..." "Careful there, bubby." "You are the most beautiful creature I've ever seen. Like a woodland nymph." "Good save," Ivy spluttered. "Otherwise you'd been sleeping on the couch." "First off, you are beautiful to me, more than words can describe. And secondly, my momma didn't raise no fool." "Really? You sure?" "Oh yeah, let me show you..." Spinning Ivy around, Daylon backed her up against the edge of the pool. Grinning, he wrapped his arms around Ivy and slowly leaned down to kiss her. Just a simple touch was usually enough to chase everything but him right out of Ivy's head. Her eyelids fluttered closed as his lips touched hers, coaxing her to open for him. "Mmm, nice," Daylon said. Both of his hand rested on Ivy's waist, kneading the cool, wet skin. Ivy leaned into him, crushing her breasts against his chest. Daylon's arms came around her, imprisoning her in his embrace. His tongue explored Ivy's mouth. One of his hands tangled in her wet, silky hair. She moaned quietly as her body ignited. Her nipples tingled, hard little points that stabbed into his chest. Daylon leaned into Ivy, grinding his erection into her stomach. He released her mouth, and rested his forehead against hers. "Oh damn, Ivy, I want you." Moaning, Ivy opened her eyes and rubbed her leg up and down his hard thigh. One of Daylon's hands drifted down to cup her ass, and squeezed. Her head fell back as he nibbled on her throat, then sucked at the fluttering pulse in her neck. "Yes, I want you, too. Now! I want it hard and fast, wet and wild. Take me," Ivy whispered. "You sore?" "No... oh no. I'm so not sore." Ivy moaned in disappointment when Daylon's hand left her ass. Grinning at her reaction he kissed the tip of Ivy's nose. Slowly he stepped back. Taking a finger he teased Ivy's lips until she opened and sucked it into her mouth. She sucked on it, rolling her tongue around it, wetting it. Breathing hard, Ivy watched his face as he withdrew it from her mouth and eased down to a nipple, then rubbed. They peaked as he blew against her wet skin. Chest heaving, fists clenched at her side Ivy groaned as his hand drifted down and fingered her wet clit. "Mmm, just how I want you... swollen." Daylon eased a finger inside warm, moist heat. He curled his finger, and rubbed her clit. Ivy gasped and pressed closer. He bent his head, and sucked a nipple into his mouth, pulling on the hard peak. Ivy stood before him in the ghostly moonlight, shivering with need as another finger eased into her pussy. His dick was tight against his stomach. Even the cool water couldn't put that fire out. "Harder... finger me harder," Ivy whispered. "I want to feel you." Daylon pushed another finger in and started to pump. Ivy was wet deep inside, but Daylon knew water would dry her out. He needed to make sure she was ready and loose. His thumb toyed with her clit as he fingered her. He removed his fingers, and Ivy grabbed his hand. "Don't stop, please." "Not gonna stop. Wrap your legs around my waist, Babe." Ivy slowly wound her legs around Daylon's waist, and his hands went under her bottom, supporting her. Daylon worked his way inside, the sudden stretching hitting Ivy hard for a moment. "You okay?" He asked, his voice strained. "Yes!" Ivy gasped. He started moving slowly. Ivy strained as she met his gentle thrusts. He slipped in-and-out easily, but she needed more, needed him to go faster. He grabbed her bottom, and started to move faster, but it still wasn't enough. She needed it deeper, too. Ivy whimpered and tried to push back against his cock, but in this position she was helpless and dependent on Daylon for her pleasure. He worked her up and down his shaft, and Ivy wrapped her arms around his neck as he moved in and out of her pussy. "More, Daylon!" Ivy gasped. "Faster!" Daylon thrust hard, sweat dripping into his face, teeth clenched. Pleasure twisted inside Ivy. Daylon shifter her slightly and she screamed; he was hitting her sweet spot. "My... mate," Ivy whispered. "Yeah, Babe," he replied. Faster he moved, striking her sweet spot every time, keeping her near the edge. When her moans picked up, he'd slow down, using short gentle strokes until Ivy regained control of her trembling body. On this went as he made love to Ivy, their bodies moving like one. Holding her tightly he suddenly slammed in, moving fast... pounding hard, driving her relentlessly to the edge. Ivy cried out and buried her head into his shoulder. Desire swirled through her. She wanted, no needed, release. She threw her head back and screamed as pleasure exploded in her mind and body. Daylon growled harshly and came too, a fountain of come unloading deep inside her. Again Ivy cried out weakly as he continued to pound her. Her mind was only filled with him now, her body in tune to his. "Yes!" Daylon yelled as her pussy clenched his cock. "Ivy... god!" He leaned against the side of the pool, and Ivy slowly let her legs down. His seed seeped out, and Daylon gently cleaned her. "Wasn't too rough?" Daylon gasped. "No, it was exactly how I wanted it," Ivy said panting. They held each other until they caught their breath, and their heart beats slowed. Daylon hugged Ivy. "Are you ready to go home, sweetheart? I'm turning into a prune." "Hmm," Ivy said, her eyes focused at the water that lapped around his waist. "Don't want anything important to wrinkle up." Daylon let out a loud bark of laughter. "Imp." "Yes, I guess we better go. Mom and I need to go buy some clothes tomorrow, and other personal things." "Come on, then. I brought towels." They both dried off, and dressed. Ivy helped pack everything up, and stood by the four-wheeler. "Can I drive it?" "Have you ever driven one of these before?" "Well, no. Is it hard?" "Not really, but I'd prefer to teach you in the daylight. It would be safer. Maybe tomorrow after things calm down. How's that?" "Sounds good to me," Ivy said and climbed on the back. They rode the four-wheeler home, going slow so Daylon could explain how the machine worked. Just as they pulled into the separate garage Sam and Mary came around the corner, walking hand-in-hand. Daylon grinned at Sam. "Hey. So how was the movie?" Daylon winked at Sam, and Mary blushed. "About as good as the pool was, I imagine," Sam said with a raised eyebrow, and Ivy blushed. "Okay you two, enough. It's late and some of us have to get up tomorrow." Ivy rolled her eyes as Sam and Daylon both continued to pick at one another. "Come on Daylon." "Oh my goodness, my adult daughter just shooed her mate inside so we could say good night. How in the world did the roles get changed up on me like this?" Mary asked. "Well, if I'm going to kiss you good night I had best do it before Daylon starts flashing the porch light at us," Sam laughed. "Are you okay with that, Mary? Seriously." "Yes, I would like you to kiss me," Mary blushed as Sam leaned closer. "It's been so long, Sam." Still holding her hand, he leaned in, and gently brushed his lips over her closed mouth. Mary stood frozen. Sam released her hand, and rested his arm around her back, holding her loosely. He wanted to her to see there was no force here, just sweet pleasure. Sam raised his head, and stared at her lips, and then looked into her eyes. "Okay?" He asked. "Oh yes." "Again?" Sam whispered. "Oh my, yes," Mary said. Sam pulled her closer to his body, still holding her loosely, but this time he wanted her to know, to feel what she did to him. He was just as attracted to the young Mary as he was to the now older one. His ranging erection was trapped in his jeans, and he knew she could feel it brush against her. Finding Love Ch. 04 He claimed her lips, and this time Mary opened to him. A small moan sounded and Sam wanted to yell his joy to the heavens at the sound he brought forth for her. Mary rested her hands on his shoulders, holding him tightly... and she didn't pull away. Sam again lifted is head and looked at her heavy eyes. "I'd say the spark is still there." "I believe... I think you may be right," Mary grinned. Sam raised his hand so he could run his fingers through her hair and Mary jerked in his arms. Her breath shortened, and the moan that sounded from her was not passion filled. Sam held her gently, threaded his fingers through hers, and slowly raised his hand to her hair. "Shh, it's okay. I would never lift my hand to you in anger. Never. I've never hit a woman, Mary, and don't intend to start." "Oh sweet lord! I'm... oh Sam, I didn't mean to, it's just-I had a moment there..." Mary's eyes filled with tears. "I ruined it." "No, Babe, you didn't, and your reaction is normal. It'll take time not to react to a raised hand. But understand this, I will never hurt you. It's not ruined, I promise." "You swear?" "Babe, move that hand down a little farther, and you'll find the truth of my words." "Oh my. Is that what I feel? Truth?" Mary asked. "I'd forgotten what a keen wit you have." Sam kissed her fingers and pulled her toward the house. "You better go in before Daylon does start flashing the porch light. Wouldn't surprise me a bit." "Sam? Will I see you tomorrow? After we get done shopping?" "Absolutely." "Okay. Well, then. Guess this is good night." Mary smiled at Sam, and the smile was carefree, light and happy, taking years off her age. "Good night. I'll see you tomorrow." Sam stood there and watched until Mary was inside and the front door locked. The lights were off in the hall. Mary allowed a small, happy smile to play across her lips. She couldn't remember the last time she felt this good. * * * * The next morning Ivy beat Daylon to the kitchen and fixed a light breakfast. She had the coffee going when Mary joined her. "Morning. Did you sleep well, Mom?" "Better than I have in a very long time," Mary said as she fixed the coffee. "Is there anything I can do to help?" "No, I'm done. It's nothing much, but I wanted to do this for Daylon. You wouldn't believe how good he cooks." "Sounds like he had an attentive mother," Mary said and lowered her eyes to the table. "Mom. You were attentive, too. As much as you could be, considering." "Oh Honey," Mary said, and her face fell. "He hit you. Right there at the end, he hit you and I did nothing. I'll have to live with that failure, the shame, for the rest of my life, Sweetie. I didn't protect you." "Okay, first off, the fault was his," Ivy said. "Parents are supposed to love their children, not abuse them. And... what good would it have done? I was hurt and yes, betrayed, that you didn't help me. But I know now it wouldn't have changed a damn thing, Mom. He still would have tried to force me into a match I didn't want, said horrible things to me, and then beat you for interfering. Not one thing would have been different." "I know, but—" "He hurt all of us. Even my half-brothers. The man is abusive, period. I'm not sure how good his grip on reality is, to be honest." "Can you forgive me for not protecting you?" Mary asked. "Oh, Mom. How could you protect me when you couldn't protect yourself? Yes, I forgive you. Now let's put it behind us and move on. Please." Ivy drew her mom into a hug and closed her eyes. She meant what she said, but the truth was that moment when Mary turned and went back into the kitchen, leaving her alone with her dad... it was burned in her mind. She understood why, and didn't blame her mom, but the hurt still lingered. Ivy knew she needed time to get past that. A small noise sounded near the door and Ivy opened her eyes to see Daylon quickly leaving. Ivy smiled. He knew they needed a private moment. "Well now," Mary said as she wiped her eyes. "So how are we going shopping?" "Daylon is letting me borrow one of his cars, and Holland is going as protection. Daylon and Sam have some business to take care of with the pack. The plan is to meet in town for lunch and then Daylon wants to go to Lowe's. It'll be fun listening to Sam and Holland yell when they figure that out." "And we're not telling them until I have both of them safely in the SUV... no way to escape then," Daylon said as he came back in the kitchen. "Morning ladies." Daylon kissed Ivy, and fixed his plate. Both Mary and Ivy joined him at the table. Daylon fished around in his back pocket and pulled out his billfold. He took a credit card out and handed it to Ivy. "I want you and your mom to buy enough clothes to at least get through a week. More if you want. And I mean everything you need... the whole nine yards. What I don't want to see is either of you come back here with two pairs of jeans and a few shirts. Everything you had is gone now, so replace it, okay?" "Do you realize the kind of money you're talking?" Ivy asked, shocked. "Yes, I do. But it has to be done. And I don't want to hear anything about it Mary. I don't want this to feel like charity, so we'll figure something out," Daylon said. "And I can afford it, trust me. So don't go buy the cheapest things you can find. You'll just have to replace it then when they fall apart." "Daylon, I don't know what to say." "Sweetheart, you are my mate. Mine to provide for, take care of. You and your mom can't go without the basic necessities. So go get what you need and have fun. That's the main thing I want you both to do... have fun." Ivy threw her arms around Daylon, and he pulled her into his lap. "You are the sweetest man." "Shh, my beauty," Daylon laughed slightly. "I do have a reputation to uphold. Besides, I know a couple of folks who would argue venomously with you." "Oh please. Sweet? He'd take candy from a baby," Holland said as he entered the kitchen. "Shut up, Holland." Daylon kissed Ivy once more and set her back on her feet. "Why don't we meet at The Silver Crest for lunch, say about one o'clock? Will that give you time to get some shopping down?" "That sounds good. We can always go back later," Ivy said. "Mom? Does that sound good to you?" "Yes Sweetie, that should be enough time." "Ivy, go finish getting ready and I'll clean up the kitchen," Daylon said. "You cooked so I'll clean. And thanks, it was great." Mary and Ivy went up stairs to finishing dressing leaving Holland and Daylon alone in the kitchen. "You hungry?" Daylon asked. "Naw, I ate at home. I could go for some coffee though." "Help yourself. You know where everything's at." "And such a gracious host, too," Holland said as he got a coffee mug down. "Keep in mind that stuff is hot, Holland." "Is that a threat? I distinctly think I heard a threat buried in there." "Ha-ha. And speaking of threats... take one of the black Escalades. That should give them plenty of room for their new stuff," Daylon said. "My Alpha, I love you like a brother, but you are so gonna owe me for this. And I'm talking big time, man." "Just bring them back safe, Holland. I can't keep them tucked up here at our village; they have already lived life like that. But being out in the big city makes me uncomfortable. Keep your eyes peeled." "You think there could be trouble?" Holland asked. "I'm not willing to take any chances. I don't think Dolmas has had time to do much, but why leave our asses uncovered? If he does do something, it will be underhanded and sneaky. More of a scare tactic. At least... for now." "Gotcha." "And don't say anything to them, either. Neither Ivy nor her mom is stupid, but why rain on their parade if we don't have to? It means a lot to me to see them having fun, Holland. They haven't had many opportunities for that in their lives," Daylon said. "It's just a matter of time, Daylon. Dolmas will do something and you'll have to—" "Yeah, I know. I should have killed him in the beginning. Damn noble urges. I thought Dolmas's ego was driving that train, but now... I truly wonder if he isn't a few bricks shy of a load." "Boy, aren't you just full of clichés this morning." "And you're full of shit, as usual. Go get the ride and pull it around front." Holland, Ivy and Mary left while Daylon cleaned up the kitchen. * * * * Holland was standing in the middle of the Lingerie section holding piles of 'unmentionables' and sweating buckets. The things Ivy and Mary were throwing on the pile had Holland's blood pressure rising, along with embarrassment. He was supposed to be off in the middle of the tool section, not here in the middle of frilly lace land. And Jesus god, what was that thing hanging up over there with all the little hooks up the back? It looked like a medieval torture device. Then he saw something that made his blood freeze, his shoulders hunch, and his stomach roll. The curses of his existence, the bane of his life, the never-ending pains in his ass... His sisters. "Oh no, please god, no. Not them... anyone but them," Holland mumbled, red faced. "Just shoot me now, god, and please, please don't miss." Tara and Jade stood gawking at him, eyes wide and mouths slightly opened. Then Tara smirked, and nudged Jade. "Oh now, would you look at this," Tara said, moving closer to Holland. "Hmm, I don't know, but I think the black would look better. Black is slenderizing, you know." "Oh god," Holland moaned. The big, brave warrior that was second in command seriously thought about dropping the arm full of lacy things and bolting for the door. But he couldn't because he gave his Alpha his word he would protect Ivy and Mary. "I'm gonna kill Daylon." "Oh, I don't know. That lace around the legs would be so flattering on him, don't you think Tara?" Jade walked around Holland then stood in front of him again. "But you may need to get a bigger size. I don't think a size small is gonna cover that rather large ass of yours." "Gonna kill him slowly, and no man on this planet will fault me," Holland said quietly. Ivy stood off to the side, watching. Never would she have teased her brothers in such a way. "Oh Tara! What about a sheer teddy?" Jade said. "Don't start. I mean it!" Holland looked around desperately. "I'm here for a reason." "Really?" Jade sounded the word out, and smirked at Holland. "Doing a little shopping on the sly are we big bro?" "No! Damn it Jade, that's not what I meant, and you know it. Jesus, don't you have to get your eyebrows plucked, or toe nails waxed, teeth whitened... something? And somewhere else?" "Toes nails waxed?" Tara snorted. "Good one." "He's hopeless," Jade said to Tara. "You dummy, cars are waxed, toes nails are polished, and a free gift certificate for the works at The Body Works Salon wouldn't drag me out of here right now." "Slow, agonizing, painful death..." Holland hissed under his breath. Ivy finally laughed. "You referring to yourself or Daylon?" "I'm there now, Daylon's is coming... soon," Holland promised darkly. "Ivy, these are my sisters. This is Tara, and that other one is Jade." "That other one?" Jade said. "It not a wonder you're still single, Holland." "Yeah well, look who's talking." Jade scowled. "If my mate is anything like you, then I'd prefer to stay single, thank you very much." "He'll thank his lucky stars," Holland mumbled. "I heard that!" Jade gasped, and slapped Holland on the shoulder. "It's nice to meet you two. Holland has mentioned you both before," Ivy said. "And this is my mother, Mary." "Oh, I can just imagine what he said. Ignore anything that comes out of his mouth. You'll be least likely to beat your head against a wall," Tara said. "It's nice to meet you both. Jade and I were trying to give you some time to settle in before we invited you to lunch." "Translated that means pump you for information. Lucky you," Holland said to Ivy. "Oh, I'm sorry! Did you say you needed a matching bra to go with that thong, Holland?" Tara asked loudly, causing several older ladies to look at Holland. "On second thought, I think I'll kill the both of you instead of Daylon." "Oh please. You've been threatening that for years, Holland," Jade said. Ivy giggled at the three of them. She couldn't imagine a relationship like theirs, but envied it. "Okay, I give up. Just stop, please. Have mercy," Holland begged. Jade turned to Ivy. "He's better than he used to be. It doesn't take nearly as long for him to give up now. I guess that makes him trainable." "You're lucky your brother cares for you so deeply. And for the record, I like him." "Yeah, he's worth keeping. And we love him dearly," Tara said. "He'd rip the head off any male that looked at us wrong. That doesn't mean he doesn't need to be taken down a peg or two." "Which they do... frequently," Holland said. "Ivy? It's nearly lunch time. Are you done here? We need to get a move on if we're gonna meet Sam and Daylon." "Oh, are we having lunch?" Jade asked. "WE are... got no clue what you girls are doing," Holland said as he made his way to the check out. "Holland!" Ivy shook her head. Turning back toward Jade and Tara, she added, "would you care to join us for lunch?" "And there goes my appetite," Holland groused. "We'd love to," Jade said. "We'll follow you... where?" "The Fisherman's Warehouse," Holland volunteered. "Would you stop," Ivy said, laughing. "We're meeting at The Silver Crest." "I tried," Holland said. "It'll be fun," Ivy said. "I'm sure Daylon won't mind." "Oh course not. They're not his sisters." Holland helped Mary and Ivy back to the vehicle, keeping an eye opened for any suspicious characters. They drove to the restaurant and Holland again checked to make sure the coast was clear. The only blip was his sisters did show up. One could hope they got lost, forgot where the restaurant was located, drove off into a deep hole... something. Lunch was nice, and everyone had a good time. Then Daylon informed the group that the next stop was Lowe's and the collected groan could be heard outside. "Oh come on! You had this planned, didn't you?" Holland buried his face in his hands. "Damn, what a day." "No wonder you've been in such a good mood," Sam sighed. "I think I need to keep a closer check on what's going on inside that head of yours." "You stay of out my damn mind, Sam," Daylon warned. Yes mighty warrior. "SAM." "Okay, okay," Sam laughed. "Couldn't resist." "So what's the big deal about going to Lowe's?" Mary asked. "You won't have to ask that question after we've been there for several hours," Sam groaned. "What in the world can he find to look at for that long?" "Everything!" The group yelled, and Ivy giggled. "Apparently this is a big deal, and a thing to avoid at all costs," Ivy told Mary. "Daylon didn't tell anyone he planned to go there... just sprung it on everyone." "Well, thanks for lunch," Jade said. "Ah yes, we really need to be getting along..." "Oh no, my dear sisters. You're going, too. I will have some enjoyment out of this one way or another," Holland said and grinned evilly. "Besides, you two wanted to spend time with Ivy, right? Well, here you go. You wouldn't just back out and leave her at Lowe's all by herself, now would you? With no other females besides her mother?" Jade took a deep breath, and planted a smile, which was mostly teeth, on her face. "Of course not, even though I hate Lowe's." Tara just laughed. "Enough belly aching. You guys act like I'm asking you to walk across hot coals," Daylon said. "At least that would be quicker," Holland said. "Oh now, how bad can it be?" Ivy asked. "That's my girl," Daylon said. "Remember you said that later, Ivy," Sam said, shaking his head. He helped Mary up, and everyone left. They arrived, and Sam couldn't stop the groan that worked the way out of his chest. "Good god, it's like an addiction. Look at him." "I think it's sweet he enjoys this place so much," Mary said as they walked inside. "Okay... again, remember you said that." Sam grinned slightly as Daylon immediately headed for the tools. "And here we go..." "Damn, I don't have a saw like this," Daylon said. "Daylon, you do to have a saw like this, it's by another maker," Holland said. "Huh. Well, this one might be better. Holland, go up to the front of the store and get me a pulley cart thing." "Oh god, not a pulley cart thing," Holland said to everyone. "Damn, that means he plans something freaking big." "I thought I'd build Ivy a swing out by the waterfall." "Oh sweet mother... he's building again!" Sam groaned. "I thought we agreed that you were not allowed to play with sharp objects after the last time." "Oh my... the last time? What happened the last time?" Mary asked as Daylon started gathering tools, nails, and screws. "Let's just say it included tall grass, some grape vines, and a... machete." Holland sighed as he watched Daylon. "Boring," Jade whispered to Tara. "I agree, actually. A couple of aisles over are some lamps, and ceiling fans. Let's wonder over there," Ivy said. "Daylon? We'll be a couple of aisles over in the ceiling fans and lights area, okay?" "Yeah, that's fine. Just stay close." Ivy, Mary, Jade, and Tara walked a few aisles over. "Why does he want us to stay close?" Tara asked. "In a word... my father." "Right. I heard about that. Scary man," Jade said. "Look, I need some light bulbs so I'm going over on the next aisle. I'll be right back." "Okay, we'll be here," Ivy said. Jade walked around the corner and strolled along the aisle until she found what she was looking for. Of course, the light bulbs she wanted were above her head. "Swear to god, they want people to buy these fluorescent light bulbs, then they make it as difficult as possible," Jade said, standing on her tippy toes. When that didn't work she boosted herself up on a shelf. Stretching as far as possible, she reached for the bulbs. Her foot slipped, and Jade felt herself falling. "Oh damn!" A pair of strong arms caught her before she landed on her ass in the middle of the floor. Jade blew her long, dark brown hair out of her eyes. And speaking of eyes... his were the color of chocolate. Her own green eyes widened. His hair was a light brown, and messy, but the style fit him. He gently helped her to the ground, his eyes never leaving hers. There were finger marks on his throat like someone had tried to strangle him, and a bruise on his jaw. He was the sexist thing Jade had ever seen. She sniffed lightly, and there, under the smell of man, was the scent of wolf. Her wolf liked what she saw, liked it very much. From the way the guy was staring at her, he apparently liked what he saw, also. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Oh yes. Stupid of me to climb up on that shelf like that," Jade said. "I was trying to get those light bulbs near the top." He continued to stare at her. "Could you get it for me? Please?" "Huh? Oh man, yeah, sure. I'm sorry. I was staring wasn't I? I'm an idiot. Yeah, light bulbs... I'm on it." Jade hid her smile. He was the cutest thing! Her body certainly agreed. She couldn't ever remember being this attracted to a male so quickly. Her heart was beating fast and she wanted to kiss him. Just wrap her arms around his neck, pull him down to her and lay a lip lock on him that would curl his toes. Then nibble over to his ear and... lord have mercy. She was about to melt right here in the store. From the looks of the bulge in his jeans, he was in the same condition as she. Finally he managed to get the packet of bulbs she wanted. He stood there, holding them. Finding Love Ch. 04 "Ah... thanks for getting those," Jade said, and motioned to the packet he was holding tightly. "What? Oh. Oh! Yeah, sure no problem... here you go." "That was very sweet of you..." Jade trailed off, hoping he would snap out of it enough to tell her his name. She wanted this guy with a passion that surprised her. "Oh man. I'm making an idiot of myself," he laughed slightly. "You're welcome. And my name is Kern." To be continued... "You have a beautiful name," Kern gushed even as he mentally cringed at what was coming out of his mouth. Honestly, could he sound any lamer? Damn, he felt like a gawky teenager, bedazzled and tongue-tied around a beautiful girl. What the hell was happening to him? He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. And to add to his misery her perfume was driving him stark... raving... mad with pulse pounding desire. Whatever it was should be outlawed. She smelled sinful. "Thank you," Jade said softly, and moved a step closer, compelled by some strange yearning. Did this guy have any idea how hot he was? Her wolf bobbed her head up and down, agreeing. Those tight jeans, the t-shirt that stretched over his shoulders so nicely... Damn, Kern thought as she stepped closer, is it hot in here, or what? "You need anything else from up there?" Kern asked. "No, I only needed these light bulbs," Jade said. Conversation stalled while Kern racked his brain, desperate to find something to talk about. The good old stand-by popped into his mind... "Nice weather we're having," Kern said, and his wolf rolled his eyes. Really, that's the best you got? his wolf asked. "Yeah, I love this kind of weather," Jade replied. Once that topic was exhausted Kern floundered around again. He never had trouble talking to chicks or asking them out. That was what he really wanted... a date, a chance to see her again. No way was he letting her walk out of his life. What he needed was a smooth line to ask her out. Something that would impress her, show her how cool he was. Kern thought for a moment. Nothing... he had nothing, zip, zero, nada. Where had all his famous pick-up lines gone to all of a sudden? Throwing caution to the wind he decided to just ask her out, no smooth lines or catchy phrases, and prayed she wouldn't laugh at him. "I-I'd like to – that is – I'd like to see you sometime," Kern said. "If you'd like that, I mean, if you're available." Jade struggled to hide her joy. She was so tired of the same old worn out, lame pick-up lines. How refreshing for a guy to just ask... and not try to be all cool and stuff. He didn't strike her as a player. Maybe Holland wouldn't want to strangle this one. "I'd like that," Jade said, a soft smile lighting up her face. Kern rubbed his hands over his face. What was wrong with him? This blabbering idiot wasn't him! Normally he just told the chicks what time to be ready. He didn't ask, he told them they were going out with him. No fuss, no muss... just get their ass in his truck, shut up and look pretty. Since when did a female turn him into a wuss? Okay, maybe wuss is a bit strong of a word, Kern thought as Jade's smile cut thorough him like lightning. She smiled and watched his pupils dilate. Man, he was sexy and his embarrassment was so cute. She had never rendered a guy speechless before. Something told her this was a first for him, too. She did sense there was a fighter inside him, and knew by his smell he was a wolf. "Ah, ah, yeah... good. I mean great! So, can I have your phone number?" Kern asked. His wolf actually put a paw over his eyes and ducked his head; this was almost too painful to watch. Oh, smooth move there Romeo. What are you? Thirteen? his wolf asked, shaking his head. Jade smiled, and pulled her phone out of her pocket. "What's your number?" Kern went blank for a moment, staring into her eyes. Will you get a grip! His wolf lay down and covered his eyes with both paws. Kern snapped out of it, repeated the number to her, and she called him. "There you go," Jade said. "I'd like to do lunch sometime." "I-I'd like—" Suddenly Kern's nose twitched... the smell of danger, a ripe tart scent that burned his nostrils, filled his sensitive nose. Then another scent caught his attention; a musky scent, one that reminded him of sandalwood, drifted to him. He knew this scent; the last time he'd smelled it he'd nearly ended up with his throat ripped out. That scent, the strength and purpose of it belonged to the Wolfland pack Alpha. Chill bumps broke out over his body, and sweat gathered at his brow. Oh shit, he did not want to run into that bastard here, and all alone. The damn smell was getting closer. Kern knew he had to leave, and leave now. "I have to go," Kern said, backing up. "I'll call you, promise." "What's the big hurry?" Jade asked. Kern had suddenly turned pale and was sweating. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine," Kern said. "I just really have to leave. I'm sorry, but I have to go." Kern turned and strode down the aisle, never looking back. * * * * Daylon stood looking at the hardware when the hair on the back of his neck stood up. Glancing around, he scanned the aisle, looking for the threat that was triggering his need to protect. Several humans were down the aisle from him, shopping. One was a bit drunk, and the other was hung over. Daylon frowned; this wasn't what was causing his hunter's instinct to trigger. He looked up the aisle at the human female and two small children. Nothing there either. There was a faint scent in the air–one that stood out above all the other scents, one he had smelled before. A vague memory surfaced in the back of his mind, then slid away. Where had he scented that smell? Being off their territory heightened Daylon's lupine aggression, making him edgy. The need to protect the females of his pack became stronger, and he growled slightly. His wolf agreed, snarling softly, and demanded to be let loose to prowl, to hunt for the scent; to protect, to... ravage, if necessary. Daylon denied his wolf's desire, explaining silently what a mess a werewolf on the prowl would cause in the middle of Lowe's. His wolf shrugged, damn humans shouldn't be so sensitive. Why they got so freaked was beyond him. So what if a big ass werewolf ran around sniffing crotches, what was the big deal? His wolf's upper lip curled back... where had he smelled that damn scent? Daylon's hands clenched into fists by his side. Both wolf and man wanted to tangle with something, beat it down and show it what happens when his pack and his mate were threatened. Immediately Holland was by his side, all business. "What?" Holland asked. "Danger. Don't know who or what, but there's danger. Where are the females?" Daylon asked. "Where's Ivy?" Sam appeared next to Holland. "Several aisles over looking at the home décor." "Find them, now," Daylon said, the need to protect pounding at him. Danger, danger, danger. "Be cool about it, but find them immediately." Holland, Sam and Daylon spread out, searching for Ivy, Mary and Holland's sisters. A couple of aisles over Jade watched Kern hurry off. She was confused by his abrupt departure. "What the hell—" "Jade? Jade, damn it, where are you, you massive pain in my... Oh, there you are," Holland said, coming around the corner. Jade jumped slightly, startled by Holland's sudden appearance. She swallowed the smart-assed remark she was about to make when she noticed how worried he looked. Right now Holland wasn't her irritating brother, he was a seasoned warrior. Two steps behind Holland were Ivy and Daylon. "What is going on?" Jade asked. "Daylon sensed a threat, but couldn't pinpoint who or what kind," Holland said. "Are you okay?" "I'm perfectly fine," Jade said. If their Alpha said there was a threat, then there was a threat. No more questions needed to be asked. "Everyone here?" Daylon asked. "Yes," Sam said, keeping Mary near him. "Let's finish this, then. No one leaves, understand? No going to look at pretty baubles; I want all of you where I can see you," Daylon said, his voice hard. "You still feel like there's a threat?" Sam asked. "Not as much, but I'm not taking any fucking chances. We stay together," Daylon said. Ivy was tempted to say something about 'pretty baubles' but the tension rolling off Daylon persuaded her otherwise. He had acted like this after he saved her and found out she had been starved. Daylon finished gathering his supplies, and they went to check out. Ivy didn't know what set Daylon off, but whatever it was had all three males uptight. No one noticed the figure hurrying out the sliding doors off to the right. * * * * Kern hurried to the parking lot. His hands trembled as he unlocked his truck, and taking a second to calm down he took a deep breath, held it, then released it slowly. "That was too close, damn it," Kern said to his reflection in the rearview mirror. "What the hell was Daylon doing in the middle of Lowe's? God, talk about bad luck!" Kern rested his head against the steering wheel. The lovely Jade probably wouldn't take any phone call from him now. Could he have acted like a bigger ass? Kern ran his hands through his hair. To make matters worse, he still hadn't bought what his father wanted, and no way in hell could he go home without those supplies. That thought led him to more unpleasant thoughts about what his father planned, and how Caleb had reacted. His childhood ran through his mind, seeing how his father had treated their mom. Then Kern thought of Jade. The very thought of raising his hand to her made his stomach roll. What was happening to him? Males of his pack were taught the man was the ruler, the one who had the final say in all things. But the mere thought of seeing bruises on Jade's lovely fair skin sickened him. Remembering how his father spoke to his mom made him cringe. He'd rather tie his tongue in a knot than speak to Jade that way. Was everything he had been taught a lie, was his whole belief system a sham? More importantly, was how they treated their females abusive? Shoving all these distasteful thoughts out of his head, Kern made up his mind he would call Jade, first chance he got. He'd have to find out who her pack was, also. He was happy with that decision until a nasty little thought crossed his mind... Daylon was at Lowe's. Jade was at Lowe's. How coincidental was that? Oh fuck, surely she wasn't... please god, she couldn't be part of the Wolfland pack! Kern shook his head frantically; she couldn't be part of Daylon's pack! If she was part of Daylon's pact she probably would have ripped his head off as soon as she saw him, then called Daylon to finish the job. Kern breathed a sigh of relief. It was just a coincidence, nothing more. Besides, why would Daylon be off his territory? There was no reason for him to here in the middle of Lowe's. Shaking his head, Kern started his truck. "To hell with this, I'll go to Home Depot. Surely to god I won't run into him there." Happy with his decision, Kern pulled out of the parking lot just as Daylon and the rest of his group walked out of Lowe's. Mere minutes separated the two seeing each other. Neither one of them noticed the other person sitting in the parking lot... watching. * * * * The ride home was uneventful. No one was lurking around the next corner waiting to ambush them, no one was following too closely. Once they were back on their territory Daylon relaxed. Whatever had triggered his instincts hadn't followed them home. His pack was safe, his mate was safe. They followed Jade and Tara to their family home. Once they were inside Daylon drove home. Finally he began to calm down. "We're going to have a meeting," Daylon said as Holland pulled in behind him. "Ivy? Could you and Mary order us some take-out while I talk to Sam and Holland?" "Sure. Then, after dinner, you and I can have a meeting," Ivy said as they walked inside. "I want to know what's going on." "Sweetheart, I don't know what to tell you," Daylon said. "I had this feeling of danger, that's all. I want Sam's and Holland's take... nothing more." "You really have no idea what started all this?" "No, I really don't. I wouldn't hide that from you." "Okay then. I'll order pizza. How's that?" "Sounds good," Daylon said. Daylon, Sam and Holland went into his office while Ivy ordered the pizza. "Did any one of you notice anything?" Daylon asked. "I picked up on your reaction," Holland said. "But no, I didn't sense a thing." "Sam?" "No, nothing." "Damn. Not knowing what threatened us is making me crazy... and there was this scent, but I can't place it." "You want me to read you? Maybe I could help your memory," Sam said. "No, not yet, not unless this happens again," Daylon said. "I don't particularly like you walking around in my head." "Then try this... stop focusing on it, and it may come to you later," Sam said. "So what do you want us to do in the meantime?" "There's not much we can do," Daylon said. "Just be on guard." Thirty minutes later the pizzas arrived. Ivy had ordered enough for all of them. Holland and Sam ate dinner with them. Later Sam and Mary went back to Sam's house and Holland went home. Daylon was still tense and restless. "This really bothers you, doesn't it," Ivy said. "Yeah, it does. I don't like not knowing where a threat is coming from," Daylon said. Daylon stood at the windows, staring out across the lawn. Night had fallen and the solar lights lit up the darkness. Ivy could see the reflection of his face in the windows, and there was worry in his eyes. Emotions flickered across his face, the unease and annoyance of not knowing showed clearly. Every instinct Ivy had urged her to go to him, to care for him. Ivy took a breath, and stepped up behind him. Rubbing his shoulders, she watched as her reflection joined his. "You've done the best you can do," Ivy said, "with no more than what you had to work with." "I know, sweetheart. It's just... I'm missing something. I know it." "Well, let's see if we can't take your mind off 'it' for a while." "Hmm, what do you have in mind?" "How about we run for a bit, let our wolves out and stretch our legs," Ivy said. "It's a nice night, the moon is bright... perfect." "That sounds like exactly what I need," Daylon said. "You go first, and I'll track you." "Ah, a little game of hide-and-seek? You're on!" Ivy sat down, took off her tennis shoes then slipped out of her clothes. She stretched, and felt her muscles begin to warm up and loosen. Daylon's eyes heated as his gaze caressed her body. His eye followed her as Ivy stepped out on the back deck. The pale moonlight illuminated her body, making her skin glow. His body stirred and Daylon had to remind himself about their run. Daylon watched Ivy transform, awash in the pale moonlight. A sudden wave of heat swept through Ivy, blurring her vision for a second. Power raced through her body, a sweet feeling of freedom. Then the sounds started; loud snapping noises as her body assumed the shape of a wolf. Blackness edged her vision for a moment. Her coat grew quickly, her snout lengthened while her tail formed. The fog began to lift and Ivy noticed that everything was just as clear at night as it was in the daylight. A small, delicate dark brown wolf sat waiting for her mate to change. Ivy yipped at Daylon, wanting him to get a move on. Quickly, Daylon transformed. The huge, black wolf stalked toward his mate, tail wagging. Ivy waited patiently as Daylon moved toward her. Less than a foot away, she stood up, gave another loud 'yip' and raced off the deck, throwing a very human look over her shoulder that plainly said 'catch me if you can'. Daylon waited as long as he could stand it, then jumped off the back porch. A lone howl cut through the air, warning his mate that he was on the hunt. He ran toward the woods, darting through the trees, nose near the ground, searching for that one special scent. Around him the night was alive with sounds. Crickets chirped, frogs croaked, and owls hooted. Off in the distance he could hear the honking of geese. Daylon could hear small woodland creatures scurrying through the underbrush looking for a meal or trying to avoid being the meal. Daylon stared at the image of the moon trickling through the trees. Again he sniffed the air, searching... searching for her. Ivy heard him land heavily on the ground as she raced toward the trees. She shot into the woods, already panting breathlessly from excitement. Her heart was thumping as she glanced wildly around, trying to figure out where to run. She took off, determined to put as much distance between them as possible. There was little doubt Daylon would catch her, but by god, he was going to have to work for it. Off in the distance she heard a lone howl, warning her that Daylon was on the hunt and closing in on her. She shivered in anticipation. As he stalked into the wooded area he focused on the trail she left, his eyes shining with desire. The big black wolf followed the trail, enjoying the hunt, having... fun. He raised his head and eyed the trail that lead off into the woods, toward the waterfall. His lips pulled back in a human like grin... so that was where she was headed. Ivy ran toward the waterfall, searching for the path and hoping she had gained enough ground to keep him from catching her immediately. She planned to cross the small stream, putting it between them, and hopefully throwing him off her scent. Daylon howled again, a deep, sexy rumbling noise that was close, much too close. With a surprised yelp Ivy took off again, darting around trees in an effort to lose him. Daylon moved through the woods, slowly tracking Ivy. Someday soon he would have to speak to her about how to travel the woods and leave no clues... but not right now. Oh no, this was much too fun. He howled again, hoping she noticed how close he was to her. Ivy veered off to the right, finally finding the path lead to the falls. Every once in a while, a twig snapped, sounding close by. Off in the distance, Ivy heard the sounds of water. She was near the falls, but Daylon was closing in on her. Hurrying, she broke into the clearing and started transforming. Standing there, nude in the moonlight, she waited for her mate. One minute there was nothing and the next he came loping into the clearing, nearly silent. Daylon transformed quickly while Ivy took off again. She might be able to see as well as he could, but she didn't have the experience hunting prey he did. With a breathless laugh she ran toward the pool. Daylon ran after her, laughing. "No escape, my lovely!" "You haven't caught me yet!" Ivy yelled over her shoulder. Finding Love Ch. 05 Ivy loved the sound of his joy and knew how badly he needed to laugh after what he'd been through today. Daylon caught Ivy at the edge of the pool, scooping her up into his arms. "Got you now, sweetheart!" Daylon exclaimed. Ivy didn't fight him. Truth was she enjoyed the strength of her mate, the dominance of the gesture. He was pure male, and he was hers. Ivy wrapped her hands around his neck and kissed his cheek. Holding her tightly he headed for a certain grassy spot. "Mine," Daylon growled. "Gonna make you yell your pleasure for all to hear." Ivy's body was so sensitive, so inflamed that the soft, gentle breeze made her shiver with need, and had her biting her lip to keep the moans inside. "Yeah?" Ivy said. Two could play that game. Ivy nibbled on his ear, whispering softly that she needed to have his thick cock in her, thrusting in and out of her pussy, that she needed him to fuck her until she screamed and begged to come. Daylon growled harshly when Ivy bit his ear, nearly dropping her. His cock was standing straight up, and aching. His breath sawed in and out of his lungs. He was lightly sweating, and the intensity on his face would have been frightening, but Ivy knew he wouldn't hurt her. Her pussy was getting wetter by the second as she drove him further into a mating haze. "Ivy..." Daylon laid her gently on the soft grass and leaned over her. He watched as her eyelids fluttered closed as his lips touched hers, coaxing them to open for him. Moaning slightly, she wrapped her arms around him, arching, trying to bring their bodies closer. Lying down beside her he kissed her, his tongue demanded entrance into her mouth, needing to taste her sweetness. Growling deep in his chest, his lips slanted over hers again and again, taking what he wanted, what she gave so lovingly. His hand drifted down her chest to caress a small, tight nipple. With a final hard kiss he lifted his head. Trailing little kisses he moved down her chest, heading for the puckered nub. His lips brushed across her nipple, watching it harden more. He blew on her nipple, the cool air against her hot skin made her shiver. Ivy moaned and her legs grew restless as she threaded her hands in his dark hair. Finally he sucked a nipple into his mouth, lavishing attention to it until it was hard and aching. As he alternated between her nipples, little tingles of pleasure shot down to her pussy, making her wetter. Both nipples were red and sensitive from his mouth. "Oh, oh... Daylon," she moaned. "Mmm, they are so wet, so swollen for me," he whispered. "Are you getting wet for me, baby? Is that clit swollen?" His hand flatted against Ivy's mound, toying with her before slipping a finger deep inside her pussy. Ivy lurched against his hand, opening her legs as his finger thrust inside. He kissed Ivy again, then stared at her, pushing another finger deep within. Then he ran his finger over her clit and Ivy's hands left his tangled hair to grab a hold of his shoulders, her short nails clawing into his skin. "I-I..." "What? What do you want? Tell me, sweetheart." Ivy reached down and grasped his cock. "I want to taste you." "Oh yeah, I'd like that." Daylon laid back and Ivy crawled between his legs. She licked the head, tasting him. He was already damp, the head slick from his precum. Rubbing the wet tip against her lips, Ivy looked back up into his eyes. As he watched Ivy gradually slipped the head into her mouth. She tongued the tiny opening at the top of his shaft. Ivy's other hand wrapped around the base of his length, holding it tightly. Ivy swallowed his cock, taking it as far into her mouth as she could without gagging. She moaned, and the vibrations shot up his dick. "Dear god," he rasped. Ivy bobbed up and down the length of him, sucking gently. "Stop, Ivy, don't want to come in your mouth. Lay on your back for me." Ivy moved out from between his legs, and lay down. Daylon lifted her legs up, and thrust against her, wetting himself in her wetness and seeking entrance. Ivy was so sensitive that the barest touch had her gasping, and pushing back against him, trying to urge him to hurry up and enter her. He watched her drown in the pleasure. Awareness swept through Ivy. There, in his eyes, was desire but there was also something... more. The head of his cock teased against her pussy until she thought she'd scream in frustration. She pushed her hips at him, desperate. Daylon slid into her in one smooth glide that had Ivy clutching at the ground. She felt every vein on his hot hard shaft, and the feeling of those big balls nestled against her ass was driving her insane. Ivy pounded her fists on the ground; the feeling of him stretching her open was glorious. Faster he moved, pulling out only to slam back inside. Pressure built, and Ivy couldn't draw enough air into her lungs as the intensity of her orgasm loomed over her. "I love you, my mate," Daylon whispered, slamming into her again. Ivy's whole body clenched as she came, tightening up until Daylon could hardly move. Wave after wave washed over Ivy until finally, finally she did what Daylon said he would make her do... she screamed. Her orgasm triggered his and he flooded her. Daylon shuddered and he eased his weight down on Ivy, holding her carefully. Ivy brushed the hair off Daylon's sweaty forehead. "I love you, too," she said. "Want to take a quick swim and clean up?" "That would be a perfect ending to a wonderful evening." They played around in the water for close to an hour, then shifted back into wolf form. Ivy followed Daylon back to the house. Shifting again on the back porch, they gathered up their clothes and walked inside. Ivy slipped on a pair of cloth shorts and a tank while Daylon dressed in a pair of old cut offs and no shirt. The rest of the evening they spent watching TV and talking about the swing Daylon wanted to make. A few hours later Mary walked in the house, spoke for a few minutes and went to bed. Daylon noticed that as soon as Mary walked in the house he relaxed. Now everyone was inside and safe. He and Ivy went to bed shortly thereafter. * * * * Kern finished up at Home Depot and returned home. Several hours later he and Caleb had the worst of the holes patched, and new pieces of sheetrock up. Caleb had picked up a couch and recliner from a nearby store. The living area and kitchen was fairly clean and useable now. "Where's dad?" Kern asked Caleb. "No idea. He told me what he wanted done this morning and left. I haven't seen him since." "Did he go into town?" "I really don't know. He didn't tell me and I damn sure wasn't going to ask," Caleb said. "Did he leave us anything else to do besides clean and patch stuff?" Kern asked. "That's it," Caleb said. "He wasn't real talkative." "You got plans for tonight?" "I thought I'd go shoot a little pool. You interested?" "Yeah, got nothing better to do. Let's not make it a late night, okay, I'm tired." Kern cleaned his hands off in the sink. "I'm going to shower, then you can have it." "Sounds cool to me," Caleb said as Kern disappeared down the hallway. Caleb put their tools away and waited for Kern to finish. Moments later he heard the shower cut off and Kern walked out with a towel wrapped around his waist. "It's all yours," he said, and went into his room to dress. An hour later they were heading into town. Neither had heard from Dolmas and frankly, they were both relieved. They spent several hours shooting pool and having a couple of beers. Caleb flirted with several women but Kern brushed them off. His mind was elsewhere. Finally he signaled to Caleb he was ready to go. They walked out to the truck. "What's up?" Caleb asked. "What do you mean?" "You were turning the ladies down coming and going." "No one appealed to me," Kern said as he started the truck. "Oh... I see." "Oh Christ, what is it you think you 'see'?" "Nothing," Caleb said. "Nothing?" "Yup." "I'm too tired to do this tonight," Kern said. "One question, though," Caleb said. "Damn it. What?" "When do I get to meet her?" Kern laughed slightly. "I have to ask her out first, and she may not even take my call after how I walked out on her in the middle of Lowe's." "Well why in the world did you do that?" "In a word? Daylon." "Oh shit, he was there!" Caleb exclaimed. "Yeah, and I got the hell out of Dodge." "Smart move." "Cowardly is more like it, but I didn't have a choice. I couldn't risk Jade getting hurt if we fought," Kern said. "So, you gonna call her?" "Yeah, maybe in a few days," Kern said as they pulled in the drive. "Caleb? Have you ever wondered if... maybe we're wrong?" "You mean about Ivy and Mom?" "Just... everything. How we treat our women, how dad acts, and god help us, what he's talking about doing," Kern said. "I've already told you I'm against what he wants to do. He's gonna get us killed," Caleb said. "Why?" "I just-it's... things are getting turned around on me. I'm questioning things I never have before and—" "Not liking what you're seeing? Yeah, me, too," Caleb said. "Oh fuck, Dad's home. Great. Look, don't say anything, okay." "Don't worry, I won't. He'd probably drag her here by the hair if he knew," Caleb said. He meant it as a joke but the reaction he got was not anything to joke about. "I'll fucking rip both his arms off and stuff them down his throat if he so much as touches her!" Kern growled, clutching the steering wheel. Caleb took in the sounds coming from his brother, and the fact that Kern's eyes were rapidly changing color. "Kern... man... you do know what that type of reaction means, right?" "I don't want to talk about it. Damn it to hell and back, we got enough trouble right now without adding more. I'm not kidding, keep quiet." "Just so we're clear," Caleb said. "We're clear," Kern said and shut the truck off. * * * * A week passed. In that time Daylon and Ivy built the swing he wanted to put by the waterfall's pool. Nothing threatening happened, no attacks... nothing. Daylon slowly lowered his guard. He and Ivy had returned to Lowe's several times for materials, and had eaten lunch in town. The threat seemed to have passed. Daylon was in the kitchen when the phone rang. "Hey Mom," Daylon said. "Hey, is Ivy up yet? I wanted to talk to her." "Yeah she is. Hold on for a moment. I think she's outside." "Okay," Kiara said. "Ivy? Mom's on the phone." Daylon heard Ivy answer from the back yard. "Hold on a sec, Mom." Daylon brought Ivy the phone. It was early morning and Ivy was watering the potted plants on the back porch. "Hey Kiara," Ivy said. "What's up?" "Well, I was going into town and was wondering if you might want to go to that new little shop that just opened. Then I thought we could go to the flea market, and later grab some lunch." "Oh yeah, I saw they were opening today. I would love to go! Let me ask Daylon if he had plans for us today." Ivy covered the phone. "You okay with me going to that grand opening I told you about? And your mom wants to go to the flea market, and do lunch." "I don't see why not. Nothing has happened in over a week, so I guess so. Just promise me you'll be careful." "I will be," Ivy said, then uncovered the phone. "Let me change clothes and I'll be ready." "Okay, say thirty minutes? Is that good? We can grab lunch in town if that's okay." "Yeah, it won't take me long. How about that seafood place near the mall?" "Perfect. I'll see you soon, dear," Kiara said. Ivy hung up and faced Daylon. "Want me to bring you back some lunch?" "Naw, I have some stocks I need to check over and other business. I'll be at the Council for a while. Is your cell charged up?" "Yes, I put in on the charger last night. I'm going to change, then. I'll call you when I get back," Ivy said. "If mom's dragging you to the flea market you better dress cool. Most of it is outside." "Huh. Okay, what about shorts and a t-shirt?" "Just something cool. It's going to be another hot one today." Forty minutes later Ivy and Kiara were heading into town. "That new shop is close to the flea market," Kiara said. "Maybe after we finish in there we can run over to the flea market. It's the big one they have once a month." "I've heard about it, but never been." Well, trust me; you're in for a treat. I try to attend every one. They have neat things there, and I've found brand name stuff for half price." The new shop was open and doing a booming business. It was geared toward women; it had jewelry, shoes, cute little decorative items, candles and so on. Both women bought something and enjoyed looking at the things. Ivy found a matching earring and necklace set and Kiara bought some of her favorite shoes on sale. They left and walked a little way down the street to an antique shop and spent some time in there. After an hour they were ready to go to the flea market. When they arrived, Kiara was thanking her lucky stars she had taken her car and not one of the big SUV's. The place was packed. "Oh dear, this place is full already." Kiara drove around for ten full minutes trying to find a place to park up front. "This isn't working; we're going to have to park in the back forty." "Well, a little walking isn't going to hurt us," Ivy smiled. Her smile faltered the farther back they had to go trying to find a parking spot. "Good Lord, do they offer shuttle bus services?" Kiara laughed. "What happened to a little walking not hurting us?" "That was before I knew we'd be miles away from the entrance!" Ivy gasped. "Think we should leave bread crumbs so we can find the car again when we get done?" "I have something better... GPS." Kiara laughed. "Rigor set my phone up with an app that helps me find my car in a parking lot. I've lost the stupid thing so many times coming out of the mall or Wal-Mart that he finally did something about it. Oh look, a spot!" Kiara pulled in on the grass and parked. There were trees next to the line of cars on one side so no one could park behind her and possibly block her in. A strip of grass was in front of the line of cars that was being used as a make shift road so people could move around. Another line of cars was on the other side of the grass road. The trees offered shade, too. No one could park behind her and no one could park in front of her, the spot was perfect... and a very long way from the entrance. "Well, we're going to get our exercise today," Kiara said as she locked the car. "If we had been in anything bigger we wouldn't have fit in there." "Yeah, then we'd be even farther away. Is it always this packed?" "Oh yes." It was a long walk to the entrance but worth it. The place was huge and had booths set up both inside and out. Anything and everything a person would possibly want was offered. Ivy found someone who made little wrought iron signs that said 'welcome' or had a place to have your name inscribed on them. She had their last name done on it. Ivy also found a vender that sold swimsuit cover-ups. They shopped for a few hours until it began to get really hot. "You ready to go inside somewhere cool and eat lunch?" Kiara asked, holding several bags. "Absolutely. I wish we had Daylon or Rigor here to help carry these bags," Ivy said. "Oh, Rigor avoids this place like the plague. He knows how I am once I get here." Kiara and Ivy walked the long way back to her car. "Did you have fun, or did I overdo it?" "I had a great time, and I definitely want to come back next month," Ivy said. "Oh thank god, there is the car. My feet are beginning to hurt!" Kiara laughed as she popped the trunk. "That's a good sign. It means you shopped till you dropped." "I'm ready to drop into a nice bench seat in a cool restaurant," Ivy grinned. "Thank you, Kiara. I really had fun." Kiara waited until all their goodies was stored in the trunk, the shut it. "I knew the first time I saw you that you were the one, honey. I hate how you and Daylon met, but I'm so glad he brought you into our lives." "Me, too. I never knew..." "What?" Kiara asked. "It's just... I never knew relationships could be like this." Ivy opened the passenger door and got in. "What I saw between Dolmas and my mom wasn't like this." "Loving?" "Yes, and a level of respect." Kiara sighed. "What you grew up with was wrong, honey. I'm so sorry that your childhood was like it was. But I want you to know that things are different now... we care for you. And we are not going to harp on that and ruin our day!" "You're right. So on to the next adventure," Ivy smiled. Standing there, waiting for Kiara to unlock her door, she noticed a patch of tall weeds had been flattened by the front of the car. Ivy stood staring at it until she heard her door unlock. "Whew, it's hot in here," Kiara said as she backed out of the parking spot. "I'm going to roll the windows down and let some of this hot air out." They pulled out and immediately a huge truck pulled in behind them. "Good grief," Ivy said. "If that guy behind us gets any closer he's going to be sitting in the back seat." "I hate when people ride my bumper. Jeez, all I can see in my rearview mirror is that massive grille guard on the front of his truck." "The windows are blacked out, too. I'd hate having to back that thing up at night, it's got to be pitch black in there," Ivy said. "I thought that was illegal." "I'm not really sure. If it isn't, it should be. No wonder cops hate that, goodness you can't see in there." Kiara said. "Hopefully the red light catches whoever that is; I don't like big trucks that close to me." * * * * "Damn whore," he mumbled. "Look at her in those skimpy shorts, and that tight shirt, showing off her body. I wonder how many men she fucked in there." He watched Ivy and the other woman walk to the car, and unload their stuff. "Would you look at all that crap?" he said, shaking his head. "Wasteful. No need for all that shit. And who the hell is that with her?" A sick, twisted smile curved his lips as he watched the two women pull away. Fate must have been shining down on him. He hadn't planned to come to the flea market today, but there was a booth that sold home grown tomatoes. They were the best in the county. After hunting for a spot up front for ten minutes he'd given up and started searching farther away. He couldn't believe it when the women parked right down from him. It was proof he was doing the right thing. He never had any doubts, but damn, to be gifted with such an opportunity proved his mission was just. The little freak needed to be wiped off the face of the earth. It was too bad about that other bitch. She wasn't bad looking. "Oh well," Dolmas grinned. "One less cunt in the world." * * * * Kiara pulled out on the street, and took a left. Traffic was so bad she decided to go the back way to town. The country roads were winding, but had less traffic. "We should be there before the lunch crowd hits," Kiara said. "I swear their cheddar biscuits are the best things I have ever tasted. Have you ever eaten there?" "Oh yeah, Daylon and I ate there not long ago. That place could make a fortune if they sold those biscuits to the public." There was a four-way stop coming up and Kiara stepped on the brake... and nothing happened; the car didn't slow at all. She pumped the brakes again, waiting. Still the car didn't slow, and the four-way stop was getting closer by the second. Kiara clutched the steering wheel and slammed her foot on the brake. The pedal went straight to the floor. The car was picking up speed due to the slight hill they were on. "Oh my god," Kiara whispered. "Ivy... honey, you have your seat belt on, right?" Finding Love Ch. 05 "Of course, why?" "We don't... we don't have any brakes." Kiara shifted down a gear at a time until she was into low gear. "W-what? What do you mean we don't have brakes?" "We can't stop. Make sure you're buckled in! Oh god, there are cars at the stop sign," Kiara said, turning on her hazards, and blowing her horn frantically. "Oh lord, Kiara!" Ivy yelled, grabbing a hold of the door. "What a-are we gonna do?" "Pray." Kiara veered into the gravel that lined the side of the road, hoping that the friction from the gravel would slow her. She knew this was a risk. Sudden terrain changes – especially if only under the wheels on one side of the car – could cause the car to flip. "It's coming up," Ivy whispered. "Oh... shit..." Kiara slowly applied the emergency brake slowing the car down a bit, but not enough. "Get out of the way," Kiara hissed under her breath at the other cars. "Don't pull out in front me, please!" Kiara blew through the intersection, sending several cars skidding out of the way. Ivy stared out of the window, eyes wide and terrified as she watched a car just barely miss them. The other driver's face looked equally terrified. * * * * Daylon sat on the Inner Chambers going over papers when icy fingers danced up his spine. He stiffened, trying to figure out what was going on. Dread filled him, and for a moment sheer terror clogged his throat. Danger. For second he was frozen, unable to act. With a loud snarl, he snapped out of it. He yelled for Sam, the worry and... fear in his voice brought Sam running. "What! What's wrong?" Sam moved around the desk, worried. His Alpha was clutching the desk, his knuckles turning white. Every muscle in Daylon's body was straining with tension. "Something is... I don't know, but there's danger! Oh god, Sam, this is like that first time I felt Ivy when she was in trouble!" Sam turned pale. * * * * After the four-way stop was a hairpin curve. "Hold on, Ivy!" Kiara yelled, getting ready. "We're... we're going too fast..." Tires screeched on the asphalt as the car screamed around the corner, slamming into the guard rail. Ivy was thrown into the passenger window, hitting her head hard, then jerked back as the car slid across the road into oncoming traffic. Luckily there was no one on the other side of the road. They hit the guard rail on the opposite side of the road and shot back into their right lane. The car hit the guard rail once again and flipped over it. Ivy watched her world spin around as the car tumbled down the shallow embankment. Sounds assaulted Ivy from every direction: the harsh scream of metal twisting, glass shattering, someone yelling... Ivy's stomach shoved up into her throat from the constant flipping. Kiara's arms flew out as the car turned over and over, slapping Ivy. Little things in the car, like spare change from the cup holder, hit both of them as they tumbled down the embankment. Finally the car came to rest on its side. Ivy's side of the car was on the ground, and Kiara was above her still strapped to the driver's seat. Blood dripped down Ivy's face into her eyes as she tried to focus. The lady from Central Alliance of Packs, or CAP, was frantically calling out to them, trying to get an answer. "We've had a wreck," Ivy said to the lady. "We need help... it's bad, very bad. Send someone, please!" "I'm sending help. Is anyone hurt? Do you need an ambulance?" The lady from CAP asked. "Yes. Oh god, yes, my mother is unconscious." There, above them on the street, a truck had pulled over. It was covered in mud, and Ivy couldn't tell if the color of the truck was white, silver, or gray for all the mud. The windows were blacked out, too. "Help us," Ivy whispered, staring up the embankment to whoever was in the truck. "Please, help us." "Who are you talking to, Miss?" The lady asked. "What's your name?" "It's Ivy. There's a truck on the street that has stopped... but no one is getting out." No one stepped from the truck. The smell of gas flooded the car, choking Ivy. "Oh shit, I smell gas." "Ivy? Listen to me, you need to get out of that car... now! Help is on the way!" Kiara moaned next to her. Ivy again looked up the embankment at the truck, and shivered. Whoever that was didn't intend to offer help, and a sense of foreboding crept over Ivy. That looked like the truck from the flea market. Just then the passenger window rolled down, and a lighted cigarette sailed out the window landing near them. The interior was dark and Ivy couldn't see who was in the cab of that truck. "No!" Ivy snatched at her seat belt. "What the hell are they thinking?" "What?" The person for CAP asked. "Are you out of the vehicle yet?" "Kiara's seat belt won't let go! Whoever is in that truck that stopped just threw a lighted cigarette out near us!" "Oh my god! You must get out of there!" There was a gas leak and someone had thrown a lit cigarette towards... Ivy eyes began to change as the implications' dawned on her. Kiara moaned again and struggled towards consciousness. Ivy watched as the truck drove off, and took note that the license plate was obscured by mud, too. Whoever was in that truck had planned this. "Ivy?" Kiara tugged at the seatbelt. "I can't – it won't come... oh my god! Is that gas I smell?" The fear in Kiara's voice triggered Ivy's wolf... the other wolf. "Don't shift, Kiara," Ivy growled, the sound low and harsh. Kiara watched as Ivy started the transformation process. The loud popping sounds echoed in car as her clothes fell in shreds around her. The wolf struggled against the seatbelt, finally using her long deadly canines to demolish the harness. Ivy's weight broke the car seat, and Ivy used her hind legs to kick against the dash, giving her more room. The she-wolf saw that Kiara couldn't get the seatbelt undone. Using her sharp teeth and powerful jaws she again ripped the belt, freeing Kiara. Ivy held her huge body still while Kiara wrapped her arm around Ivy's shoulders to lower herself down to the ground. Ivy gently pulled Kiara out of the demolished car and away from the wreckage. "Ivy, can you understand me? Honey, you need to shift back." Kiara petted Ivy's head, hearing the ambulance. "They won't come near us with you still in wolf form." Kiara watched as the big she-wolf lay down and whimpered. Thank god Rigor had told her about this form, because she was just as scary as Sam. Moments later the shift started and Ivy sat there, naked. "Oh my... god," Ivy said, realizing her clothes were now shredded. "See that bag over there," Kiara said. "I think that's the swimsuit cover-up you bought at the flea market." Ivy grabbed the bag, and pulled the cover-up out. "Well, it's better than nothing." Moments later the fire department, cops and an ambulance that CAP had called pulled up. Ivy immediately asked to use one of the police officers' phones to call Daylon. * * * * The ringing of Daylon's cell caused both he and Sam to flinch. Daylon, hands trembling, answered. He turned completely white and Sam's stomach dropped. Daylon listened to whoever was on the phone without saying a word, then hung up. Slowly he reached out to Sam. Sam's whole world stopped for a second. "Ivy and my mom... they had a wreck a short time ago. Listen to me, Sam!" Daylon squeezed his hand when Sam's eyes began to change. "Don't! She's fine... they are both fine." "You... are you... sure?" "Yes. That was one of the paramedics. Ivy and mom are bruised up, bleeding a bit, but okay. They are going to the hospital to run a few tests and check mom out. She lost consciousness for a short time. But they are alive and okay. We need to call my dad and Mary, then get to the hospital." "There's something else, isn't there?" Sam asked as he fished his cell out. This was not a call he looked forward to making. "I sensed danger, then I get a call that mom had a wreck? And Ivy just happened to be with her? Contact Holland, too, after you call Mary. I want to know what the findings are the second they establish what caused this. Call in a few favors if you have to. Also, tell Mary that we'll come get her, then pick up my dad. I want us all together." "You think someone tampered with your mom's car?" Sam asked. "Dad just had that car serviced, Sam. This should not have happened," Daylon said, then looked at Sam. "Fuck, you are saying this wasn't accident?" "That's exactly what I'm saying," Daylon said. To be continued... "Fuck, you are saying this wasn't an accident?" "That's exactly what I'm saying," Daylon said. * * * * "I'm okay, Daylon, stop hovering over me," Ivy said as Daylon once again checked her scrapes. "Where's the damn doctor?" Daylon growled at Holland. "And is there any word on Mom? Jesus, are all the doctors on a coffee break around here or what?" "Am I actually supposed to answer one of those questions?" Holland asked. The wolf was struggling for control, and coming close to winning. Daylon hated hospitals. The smell of stale urine, cleaning agents, the sickly-sweet scent of infections and abject hopelessness was bad enough, but add in the sensitive nose of a wolf... and his stomach churned. Of course, stress over his mate and his mother had nothing to do with his condition. Daylon paced the small confines of the room, ready to hunt the doctor down if he didn't show up soon. What the hell was taking so long? Just as Daylon was ready to go tearing out of the room, the door opened and the doctor walked in. Daylon sniffed, and knew immediately it was another wolf. "Doctor..." "Macon. My name is Doctor Macon. I'm with the Springfield Pack." "Daylon McCloud. I'm the—" "Oh believe me, I know who you are. It's why I was asked to attend on these two cases. Sorry for the delay, I was at another hospital when I was called. The humans thought you would feel better with another wolf for a doctor." "They would be right. So... what's the damage here? How badly are my mate and mother hurt?" "I haven't had a chance to examine either of them. I'll start with Ivy then examine your mother," Dr. Macon said. Doctor Macon first checked Ivy's reaction to the small pen light he flashed in her eyes. "Hmm, pupils dilate normally," Dr. Macon said. "Is that good?" Daylon immediately asked. "Very much so," the doctor said. "Ivy, are you seeing double? Headache?" "No to both questions. There's a knot on my head where I hit the door and it's tender, but no headache or pain." "What year is it?" Dr. Macon asked as he ran his fingers over the bump. Ivy flinched a bit as he felt of it and Daylon growled softly. "2011," Ivy answered then looked at Daylon. "Daylon, calm down." "Hurt bad?" "Just tender like I said." "We can't rule out a concussion, so we'll watch it for a few days. Don't do anything strenuous. Anyone with you needs to watch out for signs of headaches, drowsiness, decreased coordination or nausea. Come to the ER immediately if any of those signs occur. Understand?" "Yes," Ivy said. "Thank god," Daylon growled again. "Daylon, I'm going to clean out a few of the deeper cuts, and bandage them so please stay calm. It will sting a bit but I'll be very gentle," Dr. Macon said. "Why don't you come stand behind me? I could use a hug right about now," Ivy said as the doctor started cleaning her cuts. Ivy wanted his attention on her, not what the doctor was doing. She nuzzled his neck. Daylon leaned in close and rested his head against hers. "I know what you're doing," he said softly. "Whatever works," Ivy said back. "Okay, I'm done and Ivy is fine. She could use with a swift transformation once you are home to help heal the scratches. I understand she also transformed at the scene, so that helped the healing process." "Have you been to see my mother yet?" "No, I came here first since you are the Alpha. Tests were run though when she came in and the results came back a short time ago." "I'm going to leave my second in command here with my mate. There is some question whether this was an accident and I don't want her alone." "That's fine by me," Dr. Macon said. Daylon and the doctor went to the next room and examined Kiara. Rigor was pacing the small area just as Daylon had been. "Well?" Daylon asked. "Considering the severity of the accident, they are both very lucky. Kiara has a slight concussion, according to the scan, and some bumps and scrapes. Your mate has a knot on her head and some scratches. Both will be sore, but should be okay. I'd like to keep Kiara for observation as a precautionary measure, nothing more," Dr Macon said to Rigor. "Oh... stay the night?" Kiara said. "Mom, this is the best thing for you so please don't argue, okay. My nerves are shot," Daylon said. "Oh my, a guilt trip, nicely done," Kiara said. "Learned from the best," Daylon said and winked at her. "Once I'm done, I'll give orders that everyone stay out of here for at least thirty minutes so she can transform. That will help with the speed of her recovery," Dr. Macon said. "Good," Rigor said. "I'll go get the release papers for your mate," Dr. Macon said. "I'll meet you in Ivy's room." "I need to have a word with my father, and then I'll be there," Daylon said as the doctor left. "I'm going to stay here with your mom," Rigor said as a nurse brought in sheets and a pillow for Rigor. "That might be a good idea," Daylon said. "Do you believe it was an accident?" Rigor asked. "None what-so-ever," Daylon replied, shifting from foot to foot. "Go on son, we're fine," Rigor said. Daylon returned to Ivy's room to find Doctor Macon waiting. He signed the release papers and helped Ivy dress. After a quick stop to see Kiara they left the hospital. Kiara would be released from the hospital in the morning. Both were very lucky, considering. After Ivy was released, she and Daylon went to the police station to fill out the reports and answer questions, the same questions asked in different ways over and over again. The detective was a wolf that Daylon knew in passing and had a good reputation with both the humans and wolves. "Again Detective Moss, the truck that stopped flicked the lighted cigarette out the window at us while Kiara's car was leaking gas," Ivy said. "And it wasn't a truck you'd seen before?" Detective Moss asked as Ivy shook her head. "I couldn't see the plate because it was covered with mud, as was most of the truck, and I'm not sure what color it was either. It might have been white, silver, or maybe gray. It might have been a GMC or a Chevy. And it did have those black-out windows." "What did the driver do again?" "Flicked a lighted cigarette out the window. The smell of gas was strong, and that had me worried more than anything." "Okay, we have everything we need for now. Daylon, remind your mom she needs to come see me tomorrow after she's released. It'll be better to do this while it's fresh." "I'll tell her," Daylon said as he walked Ivy out. Once home Daylon called in a favor and spoke with the Chief of Police. The cops had tried to canvas the flea market and ask questions but the place was just too big, and too many people came and went. Several hours later Daylon received a phone call, and finally had his answer on what happened. Ivy was standing next to Daylon when he got the phone call, and she knew immediately he didn't get the answers he wanted. His big body was shaking, and harsh growls were working their way up from his chest. His eyes lightened in his anger. "What! Are you sure? It's obvious the brake line had been cut? So there is no question this was done on purpose?" Someone on the other end answered, and the answer didn't calm Daylon down. "It's been gone over... completely? There was nothing, no fingerprints, nothing. Son of a bitch. Yeah, thanks Shep, I appreciate you getting back to me so fast." Ivy quickly wrapped her arms around Daylon and held on tightly. She was the only reason he didn't tear his whole office apart in anger... and fear. Fear was something Daylon wasn't used to dealing with. Neither was the guilt, and Daylon was consumed with guilt. "Nothing, there's nothing. No one saw anything; no one heard anything... just nothing!" Daylon said as he slammed down the phone. "It's like that damn truck just disappeared into thin air." "Daylon..." "What the hell was I thinking? I should have never let you go without an escort," Daylon said as he stormed around the office. "I knew there was a threat and—" "Whoa. I think I know where this is heading, and you can just stop it right now. This was not your fault. You are not to blame for what happened!" Ivy wound her arms around Daylon's neck. "Ivy, sweetheart, someone cut the brake line. Do you understand what that means? Someone wanted the car you were in to crash. You and Mom, you both could have been killed." "I know that. Daylon, the person in the truck that stopped after the wreck was probably the one who.... I couldn't see the license plate..." "You sure you didn't recognize the truck?" "I haven't seen that truck in my life, and before you ask, I have never seen Dolmas drive a truck like that." "You know it was him, Ivy. I'd bet money it was him. I'm gonna rip him to pieces, and then I'm going to rip the pieces to pieces! I'm gonna go over there, drag his ass out of the house and—" "Daylon." "I should have killed his ass when I first had—" "Daylon!" Ivy hugged her mate close to her. "You don't know for sure he was behind it! How could he have known we'd be at the flea market? Your mom didn't ask me to go until that morning. The trip was spur of the moment. Daylon, he couldn't have known." "He knew somehow. It might have been just sheer luck he saw you two there, and took advantage of an opportunity, and damn, that took some balls, the crazy fucker." Daylon ran his hand through his hair. "Or somehow he knew. I just don't know how. There's no way he could have gotten on our territory without being seen." "Listen to me. You can't go and start a war with that pack with no proof. Daylon, there is no proof. Innocent people could be killed and for what? A gut feeling?" Daylon rested his chin on Ivy's head. "Damn it, I hate this. I hate that you're right and there's nothing I can do without causing a war. I hate being level-headed." "I know that, but what other choice do we really have?" Daylon pulled Ivy closer to him. "You were the target, Ivy; I have no doubt over that. Promise me you will be careful." "I will be." "And promise me you won't throw a fit when I make sure someone is with you at all times." "Oh come on, are you serious? All the time?" "Whenever you're off our territory. I'm not going to compromise on this Ivy. I won't lose you, I can't. You're everything to me. I need to know you're safe. Ivy, please my beauty, don't fight me on this." Ivy raised he head up and kissed Daylon softly on the lips. "Well, since you asked so nicely... Holland isn't going to be happy." "He'll live," Daylon smirked. * * * * One wolf was happy, but another wasn't faring so well. Kern hadn't been done talking with Jade when he had been forced to run out of Lowe's. Hands shaking Kern tried to call Jade, only to get her voice mail. He hung up without leaving a message. Kern was desperate to see Jade. Kern was just desperate... period, and for good reason. There, sitting on the kitchen table, were Mr. Mac's homegrown tomatoes. The only place to buy them was at the flea market. He and Caleb had been out together when he had heard over the police scanner what had happened with Ivy and her mother. Kern had broken out in a cold sweat. A brief description of the vehicle thought to be involved went out over the air waves. The owner was wanted for questioning by the human police. Kern's own kind would be interested, too. Kern knew that Daylon would be heavily involved with the human side of the investigation, also. The connections he had went far up the ladder. His pack was rumored to have influence all the way to Washington. Not to mention the investigation Daylon would be doing... his mate had been attacked, and so had his mother. Neither brother had said anything, but they were thinking the same damn thing. There was little doubt about who was responsible. The main thing that confused Kern was the description of the truck used. As far as he knew they didn't own a truck like that. Kern and Caleb arrived home, only to find that their father wasn't there. And there, sitting like a proclamation of guilt, were the tomatoes. "Oh my god," Kern said, staring at them. "Kern..." "Don't say a word, not one word. We don't know for sure." "Yeah, right," Caleb said. There was a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach and his head was pounding. "Don't say a word to Dad, Caleb. The less we know the better." "He's going to drag us into this; it's just a matter of time. Kern, I've been thinking... I don't want to tangle with Daylon over something as stupid as this. Ivy is mated, and Mom went willingly. And damn it, I don't want to die." "Just give me some time, okay. I'll think of something. I got to get out of here; I'm going to take a walk." "I think I'll cut the grass. It needs it and I want to get started before something gets said... with a fist." "Fine, you do that and I'll weed eat around the house and trees later," Kern said. Kern had to get out of the house; he needed air, needed space, and needed to think. He wandered around until he ended up near the back of their land. Way in the back, surrounded by trees, was an old barn they didn't use anymore. This part of their property was overgrown and abandoned. Weeds like goldenrod and ragweed stood waist high, and ivy was taking over the run-down barn. Kern brushed against the goldenrod and a shower of pollen covered the sleeve of his shirt. He brushed the gunk off and immediately sneezed. He hated goldenrod, damn weed was a pain in his ass. So, why were there tire tracks through the weeds and one of the barn doors slightly opened? Kern couldn't remember when the last time they had used this barn so there was no reason for the door to be unlocked, much less opened. His stomach cramped, a nauseous feeling boiled in the pit of his belly. Kern made his way through the tall grass to the barn. For a moment he seriously debated turning around and going back to the house. "I've got to know," Kern whispered as he opened the door. The windows on the barn had been boarded up long ago. Light barely managed to slip through the cracks. The barn was dark, but something was wrong. The smell of oldness and mildew assaulted Kern's sensitive nose, but there was something more... a smell that shouldn't be there. That smells like... exhaust? Kern thought. He pulled the barn door open wider so more light would shine inside. There in the middle of the barn stood something big, covered with a tarp. Dread dug its heels into Kern. Cobwebs drifted everywhere, and old tack hung from the ceiling. A heavy layer of dust covered most everything in there. Kern stepped closer to whatever was covered and felt the blood leave his head. He stepped up and grabbed one corner of the tarp, lifting it up. "Oh shit, oh my fucking shit," Kern hissed. The need to throw up hit Kern hard, his stomach flipped over. For a second Kern was worried he'd be on his knees relieving himself of the last meal he ate. Taking several deeps breaths he finally convinced his stomach to return to where it belonged. The back bumper of a jacked-up truck covered in mud looked back at him. It looked exactly like the vehicle the police were looking for. Kern arranged the drop cloth back over the truck and back away from it, his whole body shaking. "I knew it, I knew it," Kern muttered. Now there was absolutely no doubt. His father had done something to that car Ivy had been in and caused it to wreck. If Daylon ever found proof, none of their lives would be worth a plugged nickel. "Crazy bastard," Kern said as he left the barn. He made sure to leave the door exactly like he found it. Kern walked back to the house. Caleb was finishing up the lawn. Kern went inside, changed clothes, and returned outside. He got the weed eater out of the garage and went to work. He made a point of not telling Caleb want he had found. The less his brother knew the better off he would be when this blew up in their faces. Kern tried to call Jade again later that night and over the next several days. The first few times he didn't leave a message, but that didn't seem right either. After thinking about it, he started leaving messages even though he cringed at how silly he sounded. "Um, hey there Jade. It's me. Ah, Kern. Sorry I missed you. I, well, I was just thinking about you and wanted to say 'hey'. So... hey." Kern closed the phone and rubbed a hand over his face while his wolf just shook his head. Could he sound any more lame? He called back determined to sound more manly. "So anyway, I was thinking we could meet in town and have a few drinks. If you want to, that is. Then we could have dinner. Would you like to have dinner or would lunch be better? Oh man. Whatever you want to do sounds good to me. Let me know, okay. Um yeah, I'll talk to you later." That was more manly? his wolf snickered. Kern refused to answer. When Jade called back, Kern couldn't answer because his father was next to him. They played phone tag until he was finally able to catch her. The conversation was brief, but the desire was still there, and growing. They tried to make plans to meet but one thing or the other kept getting in the way. * * * * "Daylon, it's late, are you ready to go to bed?" "I'm not sleepy," Daylon said. "No, I imagine not; you're too busy wearing a hole in the carpet to be sleepy. Come to bed, my mate." "I'll just toss and turn. There's no point in both of us not sleeping." "Who said anything about sleeping?" "Ahh... now that I can get behind." Daylon walked to Ivy and wrapped his arms around her. The mere thought of losing her had twisted his insides up and made his stomach ache. The thought of trying to live his life without her... "I'm fine," Ivy whispered, clearly seeing the anguish in Daylon's eyes as he stared at her. Ivy hugged Daylon. His lips descended, tasting, while holding her tightly in his embrace. Dear God, he loved this woman. Little nibbling kisses covered her lips, encouraging Ivy to open to him. Ivy moaned and rubbed against the hard body so close to her. His big body trembled in her embrace, his emotions running hot and high. She pressed closer, her hard nipples rubbing against his chest through the fabric of her shirt. Finding Love Ch. 06 Daylon slid his arms around her back, pulling them closer together. The hardness Ivy felt prodding against her stomach proved he was slowly shifting from horrible despair to desire. Ivy kissed him back, urging him to respond to her kiss, heating him up. Moaning into his mouth, Ivy felt his shaft rubbing against her. Daylon's mouth skimmed along the column of her throat. Ivy tilted her head back barring her neck to him, showing him she submitted to him... her mate. He eagerly rubbed his cheek against her throat. "Take that off," he asked, motioning to the shirt. She pulled the shirt off and turned so he could undo her bra. She shivered when his hands touched the warm skin of her back. After he eased her bra off, she turned, unzipped her shorts and stepped out of them. Quickly she toed off her shoes. Daylon started at the tip of her head, caressing her with his eye's, and didn't stop until he reached her feet. "I love you, Ivy." "And I love you too, my mate." Daylon stripped off his shirt. Ivy never tired of watching how his muscles flexed when he moved. She ran her hands over his hard, muscular chest, stopping to tweak his hard nipples. Daylon drew a sharp breath as Ivy leaned closer and took a straining nipple into her mouth. "Damn, baby. I really like that." Daylon was hard, aching and needed to make room for his straining erection before he strangled himself. "I know," Ivy grinned up at Daylon for a second before going to the other nipple. Satisfied that both nipples were now hard little points, Ivy hands traveled down his chest until she reached the top of his jeans. Daylon helped her unbutton them, and then sat down on the bed to remove his shoes. Throwing them off to the side, he stood up and stepped out of his jeans. His body was all hard angles, soft black hair and she never got tired of looking at him. Daylon grabbed her hand and pulled her down on the bed with him. He ran his hand over her flat stomach, moving down until his hand slipped between her legs. She was already wet for him. She spread her legs open so he could reach the place that was throbbing for his touch. Daylon moved between her legs. She was so soft, and pink, and he was dying to taste her. Bending his head he lowered his lips and ran his lips over her clit. Ivy jerked on the bed moaning, desperate for more. His tongued her clit, driving her towards untold heights of pleasure. Ivy fisted the sheets as Daylon feasted on her. His arms wrapped around her legs, keeping her open as he sucked on her clit. Ivy nearly screamed when a lone finger entered her pussy. "Mmm," Daylon moaned into her pussy, "so wet." Two of his fingers penetrated her as he continued to toy with her clit. Pressure began to build. One hand left her leg and slowly trailed up her stomach to reach for a nipple. Ivy arched on the bed as he rolled the nub, hardening under his touch. Ivy's head whipped back and forth, her long red hair flying across her face as he used his mouth, tongue and fingers to drive her closer to orgasm. She reached down and buried her fingers in his hair, tugging frantically. Raising his head, he looked at her, the question clear in his eyes. Her eyes gleaming Ivy pushed him backwards until he was laying flat. Ivy reached between them and grasped that long, hard cock. She pulled his dick away from his belly holding it straight up. Daylon's head fell back as he moaned loudly. The head was flushed and swollen, precum dripped from the top of his dick. Ivy licked at the precum, opened her mouth and swallowed the head. Her hand jerked the bottom of his shaft. Daylon buried his hands in her hair, not to push her farther down, but to encourage her to take more. Ivy eased his dick farther into her mouth, and then started sucking, her head bobbing up and down. White light exploded in Daylon's mind. He fought thrusting his hips, the last thing he wanted to do was gag Ivy. This time it was Daylon that was tugging on Ivy's hair. He was so close, every heartbeat bringing him closer to completion. "So... close," Daylon growled. "Need you in me," Ivy said as she lay back and opened her legs. Swiftly he moved between her legs, he aimed his hard, leaking cock at her wet opening. Steadily pushing, he entered her. She was tight still, and so wet; her muscles gripped him. Ivy moaned as he slowly slid all the way inside. He knew he wasn't hurting her; she was still tight, and those moans were of pleasure, not pain. He pulled out, and then thrust back in. Ivy wrapped her legs around his waist, urging him to go faster, harder. Slamming in and out of her, sweat dripping into his eyes, he wanted her to come with him. Ivy's muscles tightened up and he knew from how her breathing changed she was close. Daylon finally let go of his control and thrust into her hard, his hips snapping back and forth. Ivy stiffened and yelled as she came, her orgasm washing over her. "Oh god," Daylon moaned as he came, the sound deep and guttural. Pleasure flowed through his body as he unloaded deep within her. He gently lay down over her, his arms supporting his weight. Ivy smoothed his hair off his forehead. "Don't want to crush you," Daylon said, the weariness clear in his voice as he pulled out and lay down beside her. Ivy kissed his shoulder and got up. "I'll be right back." A few moments later Ivy came out of the bathroom and came back to bed only to find Daylon snoring. With a shake of her head she snuggled next to her mate. So much for not being able to sleep, Ivy thought as she drifted off. * * * * Nearly a week had passed and nothing happened. Ivy ventured to town a few times with Holland two steps behind her the whole way. She was thankful that he was near. For a couple of nights she had had bad dreams about the accident. "Want to go with me and run a few errands, then maybe grab some lunch?" Jade asked Ivy one morning. Jade had called earlier and she and Tara had stopped by. They were sitting at Ivy's kitchen table. "Well, I guess, as long as you don't mind a tag-along," Ivy said, nodding toward Holland. Both he and Daylon were in the office. "We'd be off our territory so Holland has to come with us." "Ugh, really?" Jade asked. "'Fraid so, Daylon insisted after the wreck." "I guess we can stand it if you can." Tara tossed her light brown hair over her shoulder. A delicate eyebrow arched over dark green eyes. Holland stepped into the kitchen to refill his coffee and heard the end of the conversation. He ginned around his drink. "Now is that any way to treat your brother?" "Be nice, Holland. You don't want a repeat of what happened the last time," Jade reminded him. Holland rolled his eyes. They had had way too much fun with him the last time. The looks he had gotten in that department store would stay with him a lifetime. "So, where do you want to go for lunch?" Jade said as she shot a look at Holland. "How about the Tiki Bar?" Ivy asked. "They have really good steaks and seafood there." "Oh, and they have that little drink with the umbrella! Yeah, that sounds like a plan to me," Tara said. "Are you kidding me? A drink with an umbrella... dear god." Holland looked at Daylon, the plea in his eyes. "Get a grip; I've been there to watch the football game on Monday night. It's a cool place. Order the steak, trust me on this," Daylon said as he came into the kitchen. "We'll make sure to order one of those drinks just for you, dear brother." "Jade... shut up." Jade grinned at Ivy. "This is going to be so much fun." "You are so bad, Jade," Ivy giggled. "Yeah, I know it. But as much as I love him, he still needs to be taken down a peg or two. That's what sisters are for." Jade winked at Ivy. "I-I wouldn't know. If I treated my half-brothers like that... well, I just can't imagine it, frankly. I'd probably get a fist to the mouth for the effort." "Oh good god, Ivy, me and my big mouth; I'm so sorry, dear. I didn't stop to think, I just... I'm sorry, Ivy." "It's okay, I know you didn't mean to," Ivy said. "Are they really that bad? I mean, would they actually hit you?" Tara asked, shock deepening her voice. "Well, they have left bruises before, while helping Dolmas keep me trapped in my room." "I'd love to get a hold of such a filthy creature and rip his eyes out," Jade growled. "Sister dear, you'd have to take a number and get in line," Holland said. "I just can't imagine it," Tara said, shaking her head. "Holland may want to strangle us on a daily basis, but he would never hit one of us." "Well, not meaning it," Holland laughed. "Okay, you girls ready to go?" Holland followed them out to the garage. Daylon went with them and kissed Ivy good-bye. "I know it's a pain in the ass, but don't give Holland any trouble, Jade, Tara. Right now he's acting as my second in command, not your brother. Do as he says," Daylon said. "We know that, Daylon," Jade said, and put her hand on Daylon's arm. "We won't do anything to put Ivy in danger, and while we might harass Holland with words, we would never disobey anything he said. We understand." "Good. Just wanted to make sure we're all on the same page." Ivy, Jade and Tara got in the SUV's and Holland drove to town. Jade had a few library books to drop off and Tara wanted to run by the post office. The four of them spent the next few hours running errands. Finally Holland put his foot down, his stomach had been growling for a good twenty minutes. "Okay, where is this damn hut place you wanted to eat at," Holland groused. "I'm hungry enough to eat a flipping umbrella at this point." Jade smirked. "You men, all you think about are your stomachs." "Trust me, that's not all I think about," Holland rolled his eyes. "I said think about, not think with," Jade fired right back. "There's a difference?" Tara asked. Ivy snorted quietly besides her and Tara turned to look at her. "Oh no, I'm not getting in the middle of this," Ivy said, shaking her head. Holland's sisters continued to pick at him while he drove to the restaurant. The place was set off the main street. A huge parking lot was in front of the restaurant with several buildings facing the parking lot. Holland drove past the other buildings until he got to the back where the Tiki Bar was located. The layout reminded Holland of a square and was nicknamed 'the square' by the locals. Holland parked and stayed next to Ivy as they walked inside. The interior was done like a tropical themed beach hut. Jade asked for a table near one of the big screen TVs for Holland. A waitress came and took their orders, and sure enough, Jade asked the waitress to bring their drinks with little umbrellas in them. "We don't usually put those in non-alcoholic drinks," the waitress said, "but I'll make an exception for you guys." "Thanks! My brother wanted one so bad," Jade grinned. "Jade, how would you like to ride home strapped to the tailgate?" Holland asked. Their drinks were brought along with their salads and Holland left the little pink umbrella in his soda much to the delight of Jade and Tara. Holland just looked at Ivy and shrugged. "You're a good sport," Ivy whispered to Holland. "Their day is coming, I got a feeling," Holland said. "A higher power will take pity on me and repay them for the years of abuse I've taken at their hands. Or I may just strap them both to the tailgate. Either way works for me." Their meal was served quickly, which surprised Holland. The place was busier than it looked from outside. He sampled his steak and did a double take. "Damn, this place might not look like much, but someone back there sure can cook a side of beef. This is the best thing I have ever tasted." "Told you," Jade smirked. "Next Monday night you should come with Daylon and me to watch the football game. I think you'd like it," Ivy said as her cell rang. "Yeah, I just may do that. I think I've found a new favorite restaurant." Holland winked at Ivy. "Guess Daylon won't mind if I invite myself along, huh?" "What was it he said about you guarding me? Oh yeah... he'll live," Ivy laughed as she answered her cell. "Hey Daylon, we were just talking about you." Holland slapped the table as he laughed. "Hmm? Sure, come on, but we're about to eat. Okay." Ivy clicked her cell close. "Daylon is in town and going to join us. He's eaten already, but asked me to order him a soda." "Great! I'm not quite so outnumbered now," Holland said waving to the waitress. "Wanna bet?" Jade smirked. * * * * Dolmas walked around the truck, admiring his handy work. Yesterday the camouflage kit he ordered off the internet had come in and he had just finished covering the truck with it. The truck had been silver in color, thanks to the mud you couldn't tell, but now it was completely done in camo. The plate was stolen off another truck like his, too. The plate was still a bit muddy, but nothing that should get the attention of the human police. "Yeah, I'm a genius. It looks nothing like it did before," Dolmas said as he stepped back to look at it. Satisfied with how it looked now he got in and drove to town. He had a few errands to run, and had a craving for steak, potatoes, and a cold beer. Dolmas wondered briefly where his sons had gotten off to. Kern and Caleb had disappeared on him. If he didn't know better he would be tempted to think they were avoiding him. * * * * "Oh dear god, I ate way too much," Holland groaned, patting his full stomach. "Really? What was your first clue?" Daylon asked. "I think this was a case of your eyes being bigger than your stomach," Tara said. "Or just plain old greed," Jade said. "He finished up what I didn't eat, and then moved on to your plate." "Gonna be just plain heartburn soon," Daylon said. "I'm dying here, give me a break," Holland said, rubbing his belly. "No more than you deserved, you pig," Jade laughed. "My wolf would be very offended if he didn't agree with you," Holland said as he reached into his wallet. "Oh my, your fat belly must be cutting the oxygen off to your brain if you're paying for lunch," Tara said. "Least I can do since I ate the most," Holland said waving to the waitress. "Dear god, next time someone stop me." "I did try," Ivy smirked, "you growled at me." "Daylon, you really need to be careful letting Ivy hang out with these two," Holland said as the waitress brought back his change. Holland left a nice tip, and finished off his drink. "Ready to go?" "I'm going to run to the restroom right quick," Ivy said. "Yeah, me, too," Jade said. "Well, I'm not staying here with Holland..." Ivy, Jade and Tara stood up. Holland stood up, too. As they walked to the bathroom Holland fell in behind them, and Daylon was behind him. "What are you doing," Tara asked when she noticed they had followers. "What does it look like? I following Ivy to the bathroom," Holland frowned at Tara. "It's pretty obvious there, Tara." "Are you kidding me? She can't even go to the bathroom alone?" Tara asked. "You do know you can't actually go in with her. Management just might say something," Jade said. "I'd rather have management on my ass than Daylon here, but no, I'm going to wait outside," Holland said, rolling his eyes. "Hmm, he has a point," Tara said to Jade. "Come on you two," Ivy said, shaking her head. "He's doing what Daylon told him to do. And it makes me feel safer with someone, or two someone's watching out." "Okay, guess we can cut him a little slack just for today." Jade winked at Ivy as she pushed open the door. "We don't want him to get too used to it, though." "No fear there," Holland mumbled. Several minutes later the girls came out and the five of them left the restaurant. * * * * "Where is this place again?" Caleb asked as he and Kern drove through town. "Know where the square is at in town?" Kern said. "Sure." "That little hunting shop I was telling you about is there. I need to pick up a scope for my rifle, and maybe some new boots." Caleb started to say something when his stomach growled. "Man, I'm starving. You want to grab something while we're in town. God knows there's nothing at home." "Yeah, we might have to learn how to cook." "Have you lost your mind?" Caleb asked. "Dad sees one of us doing what he considers 'woman's work' and he'll blow a gasket." "Damn sure better than starving, and god I'm sick of fast food. I never realized how good Mom could cook." "Hate to say it, but there's a lot we took for granted concerning Mom," Caleb said. "I know. I wish there was some way we could talk to her." Caleb snorted. "Unless you want to be hauled off their territory in a body bag I'd advise against it. Daylon would love to get his hands on us." "Don't blame him. After what we did to Ivy and our own mom... damn it, I'm ashamed. And I never thought I'd say that, never thought I'd feel that way. It's not an easy feeling to live with." "Not an easy pill to choke down, I agree. But seeing how you reacted to this chick you've been mooning over sure opened my eyes." "She has a name, Caleb." "I know," Caleb grinned. "I just like to see you get your feathers ruffled. You called women chicks for years... and worse." "Jesus, don't remind me." Kern turned into the square. "You want to eat first or run by that shop?" "Let's get the shopping done first so we can eat in peace. I hate shopping," Caleb said. "Hey, the Tiki Bar is near that shop. Changed my mind, park half way between that shop and the bar and let's eat there first. Man, they got a steak that's to die for." "Suits me," Kern said as he parked. Neither saw the camo truck pulling into the square. * * * * "You know, we should run by the mall. Perfect way to walk this meal off," Jade said as she walked out into the sunlight. "Man, that place is dark. I can't see worth a damn." "We'd have to highjack the SUV and render Holland unconscious first," Tara laughed. She and Jade were in front of Holland and Ivy. "It always takes me a second after being in there to see right. I do wish they didn't keep it so dark." "I am not going to the mall," Holland growled from behind Ivy. "No way, no how. It's not open for discussion. We are not going. Little help here, Daylon? Damn, is it bright out here or what?" "You're on your own," Daylon said him. "I'll meet you at home, my beauty." "Okay. We shouldn't be too long... maybe," Ivy said. "Oh man," Holland groaned as Daylon walked to his SUV. "Did you say something Holland? No? Didn't think so. Anyway, I think going to the mall is a wonder... Oh my god! I don't believe it!" Jade's face lit up. Smiling, she waved furiously at someone as Ivy walked up next to her. "Oh good, what perfect timing..." A sharp pulse of pleasure shot down her spine at seeing Kern. He looked so cute with his hair all messy from the slight breeze playing with it. His bangs were hanging in his eyes and a sudden urge had Jade's fingers itching to brush it aside. A quick bashful smile cut across his face when he saw her and his eyes lit up. Jade just wanted to grab him there in the parking lot and kiss him silly. "Jade! Hey! What are you... oh shit," Kern said as he saw who was behind Jade. Low growls drifted behind Jade. The stark panic on Kerns' face made her feel light-headed. Fear was the only description she had for such a look.... stark fear. Jade turned to see Ivy was pale as skimmed milk, her eyes huge in her face. What was going on here? Kern looked like he was either going to run, faint or vomit.... Possibly all three. "Holland... why... uh, why are you growling?" Jade asked. The sounds Holland made raised the hair on both Jade and Tara's necks stand up. This wasn't their brother anymore, this was the second in command of their pack... and he was severely pissed. Holland's eyes began to lighten to a bright yellow. Finding Love Ch. 06 "Ivy!" Daylon yelled as he saw what Holland was looking at. "Oh dear god," Ivy whispered as she stared at Kern and Caleb. Ivy quickly grabbed Jade by the arm, halting her from walking to Kern. "Ivy, damn it let go," Jade said shocked. "Stay away from us," Ivy snarled at Kern. Jade, mouth hanging open, stared at Ivy. Kern looked like his world was ending. "What... what the hell is going on?" Jade asked as she looked first at her brother then at Kern. Confusion chased across her face. "Oh shit... no, no, no, no," Kern moaned as he looked at the woman he yearned for daily. She was part of the Wolfland pack. "Jade... oh dear—" "You fucker, how do you know my sister!" Holland yelled taking a step toward Kern. Holland's wolf was fighting the chain that held him in check, wanting to tear into the threat to his sister. "Sister?" Kern gasped. "Oh my fucking..." "Kern," Daylon growled as he started back toward the crowd. "Stay away from my mate." "Jade, stay right here by me. Don't go any closer to him," Ivy said as she tried to pull Jade farther back. "Those are my half-brothers Kern and Caleb." Jade turned pale. "You mean... He's the one that... Ivy, that's not possible! No way! He's much too—" A loud growl worked its way loose from Holland. "I'm gonna kill you, Kern. You son of a bitch, if you've touched my sister I'm gonna—" "Holland, damn it, calm down," Daylon said. "Please... let me try to explain!" Kern held up both hands, palms out. "Holland, man... calm down. I'm no threat! Dear god, I would never hurt Jade... never!" Kern took a step toward Jade and Ivy. "Do not move any nearer to my mate," Daylon hissed, his wolf snarling with the need to be set free. "Just like you would never ever hurt Ivy?" Holland snapped. "I saw the bruises you assholes left on Ivy when she tried to escape. I was there when your dad beat your mom half to death. What was it you said? Oh yeah... He's the male and has every right to discipline his mate as he sees fit." "Kern?" Jade whispered, the horror clear to see on her face. "You didn't say that... did you?" "Oh god, Jade... I-I-I—" "Yes, he sure as shit said that," Holland growled. "Please... just listen to me! Things have changed... I've... we've..." Kern motioned to Caleb, "we're not the same now. Please... I need to tell you about—" The sudden squeal of tires caught everyone's attention. A camo truck raced through the parking lot heading straight for Ivy... and Jade. Disbelief at what was happening froze everyone for a split second; a second none of them had. As Holland and Daylon snapped to their senses and started to move, a lone frightened howl escaped from Kern. The fear and regret of the sound shot through Holland, touching his heart even as his mind shouted in denial at what that sound meant. Kern ran into the path of the large truck, pushing both Ivy and Jade out of the way. He swung around to face the oncoming truck... that slowed a bit then everyone clearly heard the motor rev and it accelerated toward Kern. He had a few seconds to stare into the darkened cab of the truck, trying to desperately make out the figure behind the wheel. His eyes widened in surprise as he identified the driver just as the bumper hit his body, sending him into the air. "Nooo!" Jade screamed as Kern's body was thrown over the hood of the truck. "Kern!" A sickening crunch made Jade's vision dim and throat close up. Kern's body bounced off the hood, and fell to the ground, his head hitting the pavement with a horrible thud. His legs sprawled at unnatural angles and blood gushed from a wound on his head and out of his nose and mouth. The truck, skidding out of control, hit a parked car, bending the fender toward the tire. Going much slower, the truck tried to make it out of the square. Jade jerked away from Ivy and ran to Kern. Jade slowly sank to her knees, her hands fluttering above his body, wanting to touch but afraid to... dear god, so much blood and it was everywhere. Daylon and Holland were there right after Jade with Ivy standing over Jade. "It ...Dad..." Kern gasped, pain twisting his features. "Same truck... camo it... saw it... barn out back..." Kern gasped as his eyes rolled up in his head. "Damn it, you listen to me!" Jade yelled in Kern's face. "Don't you dare die on me, you hear me! I won't have it! You got some explaining to do, so damn it, you fight! Do you understand me, you fight to live... Kern, please... for me... fight." "Oh my god! Dad? It was Dad?" Caleb gasped as Kern passed out. "Ivy, call 911 and report a hit and run... victim a wolf!" Daylon yelled. Tara bent down next to Caleb. "The ambulance is coming, I can hear the sirens." Caleb turned to look at the pretty young woman and his heart skipped a beat. There was no censure, only sadness and questions in her gaze. "Holland, with me!" Daylon yelled, infuriated that his mate and her friend, Holland's own sister, had been attacked with him standing there, just a few lousy feet away. While he and Holland had stood frozen for a few precocious seconds Kern–Kern, of all people–had acted without thought or care for himself. His body surged with unleashed power and anger as Daylon dropped to his hands and knees as the change roared through him. His clothes shredded around him. Thick, coarse hair covered his body as man gave way to enraged beast. His mouth elongated into a muzzle that held sharp, deadly teeth. Holland rushed through his transformation, grunting from the pain of changing so quickly. Daylon rushed through the transformation, too, shuddering as power flowed through his body fighting the pain. His bones snapped and popped, rearranging to support the frame of his wolf. Within seconds a huge, muscular black wolf tore off after the truck with another wolf right behind him. Bright yellow eyes, with a black outer ring, narrowed on his prey. On the left side of him another wolf ran... not Holland his mind registered. Daylon looked the wolf over; there was only one male left standing and it was... Caleb. The other wolf looked back at him and Daylon could see the pain and fear in his yellow eyes. Caleb knew Kern was injured badly. The truck was moving much slower now, the front tire smoking from the fender rubbing it. Dolmas was cutting the tire down. With a maddened howl Holland leaped through the air. His front paws caught the tailgate. Struggling he pulled his body into the bed of the truck. Using his massive head he head-butted the sliding back window. He hit it repeatedly until the window had spider-web cracks all through it. With a last hard hit he pushed the safety glass through into the cab. Now he had access to the cab and the bastard inside. He wiggled his massive body until he was partly inside the cab and using his massive jaws attacked Dolmas as best he could. "Fuck! You sorry son of—" Dolmas let go of the wheel. Frantically he let his wolf take control. His eyes lightened as he balled up his fist to attack Holland. Suddenly the passenger window broke and crashed to the floor of the cab. Daylon was attacking from the passenger side of the truck. Daylon heaved his big body partly through the window and sank his sharp fangs into Dolmas' arm. Daylon shook his head viciously. His fangs sank deeper into the upper arm, skimmed the bone and ripped loose a big piece of meat, severing an artery. Pain and fear flowed through Dolmas making his mind scream. Blood sprayed covering the cab and everyone inside. "No!" Dolmas yelled as he reached under the seat for the gun he kept there. "Die you fuckers!" The truck slammed into another vehicle when Dolmas let go of the steering wheel and rolled to a stop. Both Holland and Daylon slowly and mechanically tore Dolmas to shreds... tearing skin from bone, blood covering the cab and horrible screams echoing around them. Dolmas tried to transform but the damage was done. They didn't stop until Dolmas' mangled body lay still on the bench seat of the truck. The entire time Caleb sat at the driver's door, his body blocking any escape. * * * * Two bloody wolves, and one deep in shock, walked slowly back to where an ambulance was pulling away with Kern. Human and nonhuman police swarmed over the scene taking eye witness accounts of what had happened. The human police had stepped back; this was something the wolves would handle among themselves. No humans had been hurt, only property. Ivy and Tara watched as the three males transformed back. Quickly Daylon went to his SUV and opened the trunk. He kept spare clothes there, as did many wolves. He wiped the blood off as best he could and dressed. He immediately went to Ivy and hugged her close. "He's gone, my beauty," Daylon whispered in her ear. "He won't hurt you ever again or your Mom." "I figured he was dead, there's so much blood. God, so much blood has been spilled today." "Are you okay?" "If you're asking me if I'm upset, then the answer is no. I'm not upset that he's dead. It's the best thing that could have happened for all of us. Now maybe our lives will go back to normal. What about Caleb?" Caleb stood shivering nearby. "There's another pair of sweat pants in the SUV Holland was driving," Daylon said turning to him. "Caleb, come with me, I might have something you can borrow." Holland and Daylon walked Caleb to the other SUV. Caleb's eyes darted back and forth between them. "Daylon, I had nothing to do with this, I swear. Kern and I were going to this little shop on the square and—" "I don't doubt you." "I decided I was hungry and there was the Tiki Bar and... wait. What?" Caleb said. "I said I don't doubt you. You think I didn't notice you blocked the driver's door? And you also ran with us to chase Dolmas down. " "I'm-I'm not next then?" Caleb was shaking from the shock of what happened with Kern and fear of Daylon. Daylon stiffened as Ivy walked to him. "Sweetheart..." "Kern saved my life, and Jade's. I can't believe he did what he did; do you have any idea how out of character that is for him? He's not the same person now. And he knew Jade, Daylon. She's pretty torn up over him getting hurt. I think... Daylon, there's something there. Caleb had nothing to do with all this. My mate..." "I'm not going to kill Caleb. He wasn't driving that truck. Hear me, Caleb?" Caleb closed his eyes for a moment and tried to calm his breathing. "I think Kern knew Dad was behind all this. He mentioned a barn on the back part of our land. He was trying to figure out a way to stop Dad... I know he cares for Jade, deeply. The mere thought of her being treated like..." "I was? Or how Mom was?" Ivy asked. "He swore he'd rip Dad to pieces if he ever touched her like that. He wasn't kidding, Ivy. He started questioning how we were raised, what we did to you. We both did." "Jesus Christ," Holland said. "She thinks he's her mate, doesn't she? Fan-fucking-tastic. Where is she anyway?" "She went with him. They aren't sure if he's... Caleb, he's really hurt bad and might not..." Ivy watched her brother tear up.... And was shocked at the depth of emotions on his face. "I'm so, so sorry Ivy. So very sorry for all the things we did to you... and Mom. Words don't cover what we did to you. God Ivy, the thought of treating my mate in such a way sickens me." "The human police and our police want to question us. Let's wrap this up and deal with the rest later. They want to talk to all of us. Frankly, I want to get this done and take a long fucking shower," Daylon said. "I guess I'll go home and—" "Are you sure that's a good idea? You stood by while we killed your Dad. Is your pack going to reject you for that?" Daylon asked. "I-I-I... god. I don't know," Caleb said. "Shit," Holland said as he rubbed his forehead. "I can't believe I'm going to say this, but maybe he should come with us until we see how they respond. And I've officially lost my damn mind." "I was thinking the same thing," Daylon said. "What? That I've lost my mind?" Holland asked. "That's a given. No, I meant that Caleb would be safer for the time being with us. Ivy, do you have a problem with this?" "No, surprisingly I don't. Mom will be thrilled to see Caleb again. Oh Lord... we have to tell her about Kern." Ivy leaned her head against Daylon's shoulder. "You mean... you mean you're going to allow me on your territory? I don't know what to say," Caleb said. "You promise me that I won't end up regretting this," Daylon growled. "No, oh Christ no... I won't do anything, I promise you. Thank you, Daylon," Caleb said as his eyes drifted to a very quiet Tara. Ivy saw the glance, as did Daylon. Poor Holland, Ivy thought. His world was about to get turned upside down. They finished giving their statements to the police and Dolmas' truck was towed in to be checked for evidence. Daylon needed to know whether he was behind the earlier attack on Ivy and his mom. They returned to their SUV's, Caleb included. Ivy shook her head. Her mom was going to be so surprised to see Caleb and relieved to know that Dolmas was dead. Ivy felt nothing; no guilt, no remorse and certainly no sadness. Dolmas was nothing to her, less than nothing. He spent his whole life making her suffer. As far as Ivy was concerned Dolmas was nothing more than a rabid dog that needed to be put down before more people got hurt. So what if, deep down inside, she was overjoyed that her mate had ripped him to shreds. She could live with that... no problem at all. Sam would be relieved, too. But as with any good news, there was bad. Jade was at the hospital with Kern and that spoke volumes. Ivy wondered if Holland had figured that out yet. Mary would want to see Kern just in case things turned out... bad. They needed to eat, then clean up and go to the hospital. It promised to be a long night. Ivy leaned forward and patted Caleb's hand. The simple touch had tears flooding in his eyes again. Sometimes the road to finding love can be bumpy, but worth every second of it. Now they were all on the road to finding trust. The End Finding Love ends here, but the story doesn't end. Kern is in bad shape, and Caleb has hope that things will get better for them all. I may try to get several chapters done before I start posting Kern's story, too.
