We went to the same private high school together and met on the debate team. I won fourth chair our freshman year and his father made him join. I covered often for his shyness that year, due to his nervousness about speaking English, and we were inseparable ever since. By our senior year, we were co captains and English wasn't a problem anymore. We double dated some despite him having a political arranged marriage, to a girl named Ayano Nakamura waiting for him back in Japan after he graduated college. After High School, we entered nearby Georgetown University together. I wanted a law degree and he was going for a foreign services degree. I rented an apartment and he came over quite often to get away from the pressures his father would place on him. I was his sanctuary. Now, after just one semester, I'm sitting on my bed with my back against the headboard holding my pillow, grasping for any comfort I can, hoping, praying to understand what would cause him to commit the unspeakable. I know he was feeling down after his parents, Junichi Tanaka, the Ambassador of Japan to the United States and his wife Rin, died in a car accident a week ago, but I never expected my always bright and upbeat friend to kill himself over the affair. Especially since I saw him yesterday and though he wasn't over the loss, he seemed like he was getting better. Or maybe I'm just trying to rationalize the impossible because I desperately miss my best friend. I am brought out of my sadness by the ringing of my doorbell. I trudge down to the front door and open it to a man in a delivery service uniform. "Yeah, I got a package for a Connor Baldwin," the man said while looking at the paper on his clipboard. "That would be me," I replied confused on why I'm receiving a package. "Sign here." The man handed me the clipboard and a pen. "What is it?" I asked as I put my signature on the paper. His response was generic as he handed me a box no bigger than a small cube of Kleenex, "Don't know. I just deliver it. Have a nice day." I just tossed it in the general direction of the kitchen table and went to sulking on the living room couch. Minutes later, perhaps hours, who really knows, the doorbell rang again. When I opened the door, a man of Japanese descent in a black suit stood before me. He had a scar on his right cheek and his eyes seemed to peer at my soul. "Are you Connor Baldwin?" The man asked in a firm tone. "Yes, I am," I answered. "The same Connor Baldwin that was friends with Kagari Tanaka?" "Yes, who wants to know?" The man's response to my question was to enter my house and grab me by the throat. "I am looking for something. Did Kagari give you anything this past week? "He tightened his grip. "I will know if you are lying." He then released me. "Tell me before I get upset." I gasped out, "No." (Emotional response? Love the psychological aspect of any story.) "You speak the truth. Sorry for the inconvenience." He turned and left. I crumbled to the floor, felt my neck, and coughed a couple times. "What the hell." I said to no one. "What was that?" I looked up and saw my girlfriend since day one of college, Kate Upshaw, a beautiful curvaceous brunette woman wearing her typical tight sweater and hip hugging jeans standing in the doorway. "Oh goodness, are you alright?" Kate rushed to my side. "Why are you on the floor?" I took a deep breath. "Well, my best friend killed himself and now some asshole just choked the shit out of me." I never swear, but my frustration level was now through the roof. "Oh my God, I'll call the police." Kate whipped out her cell phone. "Don't bother. He's long gone and I couldn't tell you where he went or even what vehicle he drove." I stood up and hugged her. "Besides, I'm not hurt." Kate took care of me that night. She made dinner and we talked about the happy moments we had with Kagari. It was a sad day, but the grieving process has at least begun. Kate went to use the bathroom, and I stretched my legs under the table. I kicked something. I glanced down and saw the box that was delivered earlier. I was getting out of my chair so I could retrieve it when Kate came back in. "I got to get going," Kate said with her coat in hand. "Are you going to be alright?" "I'll be fine." We kissed. "Thanks for everything." "No problem. See you tomorrow." Kate went out the door. I grabbed the mysterious box and a knife. I cut the tape and lifted the flaps. Inside was a small jewelry box. I flipped it open to find a ring with a Japanese word inscribed into it. Now I'm okay at speaking Japanese myself and below average at understanding people speaking it to me, unless they go slow, when your best friend is from Japan you notice quite a bit. Reading it, however, is a completely different animal that I have not even tried to master. Underneath the ring box, there was a letter. Connor, You and I have been friends a long time and there is no one I trust more. I have concluded my parents were murdered and I may very well be next. If I am not alive when you receive this, then I must ask a favor of you. The ring is very sacred and people are willing to kill for it. Do not tell anyone you have it, not even Kate. The less people know, the safer they are. I require you to travel to Kyoto, Japan. There is a secret meeting of The Brotherhood of Japan to be held at Kiyomizu-dera temple at midnight one week from Friday. The Brotherhood is an organization that has been in existence for thousands of years and its sole purpose is to create a better life for the people of my country that includes political leaders, religious leaders, international corporations, and even legendary samurai castes. A technology has been developed that would reduce the world's dependency on oil. Lately, various members have secretly been in league with several Middle Eastern countries that are pushing for acts that would prevent this technology from being developed. My father was the head of the organization and wanted nothing more than to make life easier on the common man, and he was certain this would help the world. The position he held is an inherited one so when he died, it fell to me and I am now bequeathing it to you. Whoever has the ring has the power. The enclosed invitation will get you in. Tell them you are from the Lysengic Corporation. It is an American company working with Harashima Enterprises to develop the technology. Outsiders are not normally allowed, so don't expect a warm welcome. Only when they announce for the ring bearer to make his presence known can you show the ring and you will be safe. Don't let anyone pressure you into handing it over. Trust your instincts, as I do not know who set these plans in motion. Good luck and be safe. Your friend always, Kagari My friend was murdered and if I'm not careful, I very well could be next. Hell, a man was already here today and if I had opened the box first, Kate would be the one mourning me. I want to help my friend but I don't want to die. A world without reliance on oil would be a dream but at what cost to me? Can I risk death? What kind of friend would I be if I refused Kagari's last request? Time to make plans to go to Kyoto. December is one hell of a month to travel at the last minute. I paid way over market value for flights and hotel accommodations. I informed my family I got an internship in California and told Kate I had a death in the family. I hated lying, especially to her. Despite getting there a day early, I dared not risk going anywhere. I could not stop fidgeting. I locked myself in my hotel room until it was time for the meeting. The temple was only a couple blocks from my hotel, so I walked it. I didn't want to draw attention to myself by getting a cab. When I arrived, security was tight. I had to show my invitation to several guards and every one of them looked at me with disgust. I briefly thought about leaving, as I was definitely not wanted. Everyone was hoarded into the biggest building. I was in the back with all the other gaijin, or outsiders. I couldn't believe the spectacle I was witnessing. There were three separate tables of samurai, two tables of men I would say were religious, based on their robes, and about twenty other tables filled with men in suits. The master of ceremonies soon arrived in front of everyone. From what I was interpreting, he welcomed everyone and went over the agenda. I think he then asked for a moment of silence for the Tanaka family because everyone's heads bowed. I followed suit. He said something about unfortunate circumstances, something about a vote, and the final word was mikado. "What does mikado mean?" I whispered to myself. "It means leader or emperor." The extremely thin man in glasses sitting next to me answered in a hushed voice of his own. "Because of the untimely deaths of father and son, they want to elect a new mikado." "What about the ring?" I curiously asked the man next to me. "He said a ring wasn't found, but I don't know what that means, do you?" I stood up and tentatively walked forward. With each table I passed, I felt like daggers were coming from everyone's eyes. I heard words like disrespectful, insolence, and dishonorable. They didn't like that the gaijin was interrupting there precious meeting. I reached into my pocket and clutched the ring. The host was saying something to me about sitting or getting out. It was now or never. I slipped the ring on and held my hand high in the air for all to see. A wave of silence came over the room. The host asked something. All I understood was "where" and "ring." "Talk slower, please," I countered in Japanese. The man rolled his eyes and shook his head but complied. "Where did you get that ring?" "Kagari Tanaka," I responded adamantly. "This organization does not concern you. Hand it over and leave." The man was beyond angry with me. "No," I said sternly and then I remembered I'm supposed to be in charge. "By order of Connor Baldwin, I demand you to sit down. The anti-oil device is too important to the world and I'm here to see to it that it gets created," I added with a confidence I wasn't really feeling. He took a step back and then smiled. He walked towards me and stopped with about a foot separating the two of us. "I challenge you to a duel to prove your worthiness." A small amount of pee escaped my body. After a few moments, I responded. "What kind of duel?" I was barely audible. The answer came from behind my antagonist in the form of a woman carrying two katana's. "Choose." I grabbed one and it was obvious I had never held a sword in my life. I was so unsure of myself. The man openly laughed at me. Kagari never mentioned anything about a duel. What did I get myself into? There came a commotion from one of the samurai tables. I heard the phrase "Your Highness, no." I gazed toward the crowd and saw a young woman, no more than twenty years of age. She stood about 4'7" tall with shoulder length black hair, and had brown eyes. She wore black glasses and she was walking towards me. She looked like she had some American features in her as well. As she got closer, her hand reached for her katana. I was fortunate my opponent was in awe of this woman, because he had plenty of opportunities to cut me down. I stumbled a few steps back as she was almost in striking range. Her eyes reminded me of a hawk stalking her prey and her facial expression seemed to be made of stone. Two more steps, and then the woman withdrew her sword and kneeled. "Upon my code of honor, with the discipline of my being, I am bound to serve and protect you with my life and sword." She spoke in perfect English first and then echoed it in Japanese for all to hear. I didn't understand the meaning of what she said but everyone in attendance received it as if she gave birth to a deity. It was held with that much reverence. The woman stood and faced my foe. "I, Tsukiumi Akita, on behalf of Mr. Baldwin accept your challenge Isamu Susaki." Could she do that? Not that I was complaining. Apparently, Tsukiumi is good with a sword, because Isamu dropped his katana and backed down immediately. "Very Well." Tsukiumi sheathed her weapon and turned to face me. "Tell everyone we are postponing the meeting for one week." I did, but it took me two times, as my first attempt was followed by abrupt laughter and Tsukiumi had to correct the word 'week' as I apparently said 'orgy'. She sent several members of her clan to retrieve my belongings and we went to her hotel room with one other samurai, a warrior by the name of Kazuki Akita. Kazuki muttered something. "In English." Tsukiumi responded. "It is impolite to speak a language in front of someone who cannot comprehend, especially when you are talking about him." "Yes, Your Highness. I apologize." Kazuki continued. "The elders are not pleased that after only three years of coming to the knowledge you exist, the head of our clan would leave." Kazuki shook his head. "And for him of all people. It is just foolish." "What is wrong with Mr. Baldwin?" Tsukiumi replied unwavering. "He stood up to a crowd who wants nothing more than his death, proving his bravery, he accepted a duel he knew he could not win, proving his courage, all for the anti-oil device he knows nothing about, proving his passion to want to help humanity. Is not a man of that mettle worth protecting?" Kazuki stood speechless. "And besides, he is the Mikado of The Brotherhood of Japan. His position alone demands that he should be protected," Tsukiumi added. "You are wise beyond your years Your Highness. I'll let the elders know of your decision." Kazuki left. "Ma'am, I would like to say thank you for saving my life." It was an apology long overdue. "You can suspend the formalities. Call me Tsukiumi and no thanks needed, Mr. Baldwin." Tsukiumi looked out the window and then closed the curtain. "It is considered an honor for an Akita to find someone worthy to protect and you definitely need protection." "Please, don't call me Mr. Baldwin." "Yes, Sir." "No, that's not what I meant. You can call me Connor." "With all due respect, Sir, I will call you Mr. Baldwin or Sir." I realized then I have to take Tsukiumi for her word. Her stoic voice and stone facial expression hasn't changed from when I first saw her stride toward me. "Please don't take this the wrong way, but should I be looking to hire a security service?" "I will be enough." I believed her. Without warning, there was a knock at the door. Tsukiumi pulled her katana, opened the door and had the blade at the throat of the man standing there in a blink of an eye. "What do you want Hideki Nakamura?" Hideki took the hint and proceeded in English. "I need to see the Mikado about a personal matter." I could see apprehension in his eyes, as he certainly wasn't expecting a weapon at his throat. "It can wait until later," Tsukiumi rebutted. "I was Junichi Tanaka's most trusted advisor and you won't let me in to see the new Mikado?" There was shock in Hideki's voice. "No." "I understand your position, but understand mine. My daughter would like to meet her husband before they get married." I coughed on air. "Did he say married?" I know all men have a little angst on their wedding day, and they had months, if not years to plan for it. Now take that little and multiply it by infinity. That's where I'm at. "Mr. Baldwin, do you wish to meet with your fiancé?" Tsukiumi inquired. Still stunned by this development, I eloquently replied, "Um yeah, sure." "Only Ayano may enter," Tsukiumi directed. "Hina and I would like to meet with our future son," Hideki beseeched. "No, only her. Take it or leave it." Tsukiumi was defiant. Ayano glided through the door and Tsukiumi shut and locked it. Ayano is the most angelic being I have ever seen. She radiated a simple beauty. Her black hair went to her mid back; her eyes were the color of chestnuts and she wore a blue silk kimono. Every movement was graceful and with purpose. I kissed her hand and invited her to sit beside me on the bed. We both seemed mesmerized as we took in each other's appearance from head to toe. Ayano placed her hand on my chest, right where my heart is. "Courage." She struggled with the word. She then placed her hand on her chest. "Honored." "If you speak slowly, I can understand you." I told her in Japanese. Ayano smiled widely and nodded her approval. We talked a short while before Ayano felt she should go to sleep. Tonight was just for introductions. We were supposed to be married the Sunday after the meeting, which means if I didn't postpone it, I would be married in two days. Now it will be in ten. What a relief, I thought it was going to be rushed. Ever the gentleman, I walked Ayano to her room with Tsukiumi as a shadow. I kissed her cheek and bid her a goodnight. Once Tsukiumi and I were safely back in the hotel room, I flipped out. "I can't get married, I have a girlfriend. I'm only 19; I'm not ready for commitment. I'm still trying to figure out who's the best person to give this damn ring to. What the hell am I even doing here? What did Kagari hook me into? Ah, man." I shook my head and threw up my arms. "My Dad's going to kill me for marrying someone I don't even know and my Mom's going to be pissed she isn't here to see it." I collapsed onto the bed. Tsukiumi let me get all my aggressions out before talking in her usual controlled voice. "Relax Mr. Baldwin. I am here to assist in all your quandaries." She sat on the bed next to me and placed her hand on my back. "First, you need to decide right now if you are able to lead." I turned my head towards her, hoping she was about to give me a way out. "The Brotherhood of Japan is an honorable organization. It has been in existence for thousands of years because of proper guidance from the Mikado. If you turn over the ring, it will fall into disarray with all the members fighting over who deserves the right to be in control. They are all wrong. Being a leader is not about personal power, it's about giving power to the people who do not have it. I see that power in you. You spoke of giving the device to the world without want of compensation or regard of what others may think. That is why I spoke an unbreakable vow to serve and protect you. You, Connor Baldwin are the right person to be the Mikado. Don't just believe me, believe Kagari Tanaka. Your friend could have chosen anyone to give this power to and he chose you." I was now sitting up on the bed, facing Tsukiumi. "But what about Ayano?" I asked curiously. "Ayano was selected to be the wife of the Mikado. She has been trained to be everything the Mikado needs in a woman. She is highly skilled in foreign affairs, negotiating, and can speak several languages. . She knows everything there is to know about the Brotherhood and all its enterprises. She is someone who will push you to be your best while being supportive in your endeavors. She will be your confidant, your wife." "So you're saying love is not a luxury to Ayano and me?" "I understand why you may think that, but that is not how she feels. Love is born from actions. Ayano's first words were courage and honored. Your act of courage tonight made her feel honored to stand by your side and by speaking those words in English, a language that is a weakness to her, she demonstrated she is willing to show you her flaws. She could have easily asked me to translate. You in return did the same, when you spoke to her in Japanese. It was a small gesture, but one that went a long way. She wants to love you and if your current actions continue along the same path as you have already shown, she will." Walking My Friends Path Ch. 01 "What about Kate?" I'm not sure I want to know the answer to this one. "Allow me to ask a question to you, are you going to turn your back on the world and humanity and refuse your duty, the responsibility only you can do and let fear be your guide? Are you going to deny your friends last wishes? Or will you honor him and take the burden of this office for the betterment of civilization? How do you want history to remember you?" I took a deep breath. "You're right Tsukiumi; I'll do it, but only on one condition." "What do you wish?" "Call me Connor." I smiled. Tsukiumi just shook her head. "If not that, then I want three things. I would like to take Ayano on a date before we are to wed, I would like to have a crash course in Japanese, and I definitely want to know who is responsible for the murders of the Tanaka family. If I can bring to justice the perpetrators, it will solidify the Brotherhood." "Sir, all will be accomplished. You should sleep." I awoke to being thrown over Tsukiumi's shoulders and carried onto the balcony. "What the hell?" "I disposed of three, but there were too many filtering in from the hall, so we had to leave." Tsukiumi jumped to the neighboring balcony. "You killed three and I didn't wake up?" "I can be quiet." Tsukiumi leapt to another balcony. I looked back and saw several men in black suits following us with guns drawn. "They're going to shoot!" I panicked. "Relax, Mr. Baldwin; I cannot make these next jumps if you are squirming." Tsukiumi tightened her grip on me and I closed my eyes, not wanting to see my death. I felt an unusual sensation and opened my eyes. We were in a state of constant stop start free-fall. Tsukiumi was jumping downward on the balconies, crisscrossing her way down the thirty-story hotel. This woman must have arm and leg muscles made of steel. When we reached the bottom, she set me down, took two deep breaths, and we jumped in a cab. "You are truly a remarkable woman Tsukiumi." I stared at my companion in awe. "Thank you again." "Mr. Baldwin, you are the remarkable one. Those men were not after me and yet you have not given in to the pressure of surrendering the ring. When I look at you, I see hope." I shook my head. I was never good at receiving compliments. "Where are we going?" "I have organized everything as you wished. Later we will delve into linguistics, Kazuki is investigating, but right now we are on our way to meet your fiancé for your date." We met Ayano at a fancy restaurant, but we didn't eat there. Another cab ride, two stops on the train and a five-minute walk through the snow and woods later, we were now at the small cottage set on a lake that Tsukiumi picked out for the date. If anything can be said about Tsukiumi, she is thorough at her duty. She was the only one to know our location, exactly as she meant it to be. "Welcome to Chateau Baldwin." Tsukiumi announced as Ayano and I stepped in. "Feel free to give yourself a tour and I'll fix dinner." "Chateau Baldwin?" I chuckled. "I don't remember owning a Chateau." "You do today," Tsukiumi called from the kitchen. It took Ayano and I exactly one minute to tour this "chateau." When you walk in the kitchen is to the left and the living room to the right. There were two doors in front of us, one led to the bedroom and the other to the bathroom. It was scarcely furnished. No matter where Ayano and I were, Tsukiumi would be close by. We decided to take up residence in the living room on a couch that has seen better days. We talked and truly got to know each other. "So tell me about yourself." I asked with a smile. "Not much to say really, all my life I've been groomed to be the Mikado's wife. I barely even went outside as I was trained and taught how to be perfect and in the end, it was between me and another girl. When we were sixteen, the decision was made and I was selected. I'm not sure what I would have done if I lost. To be that close and not meet my only goal in life would have heartbreaking. After that day, I've been between excited and nervous about meeting you." Ayano grabbed my hand. "Then when you stood up to everyone at the meeting, I was genuinely proud that I'd be able to declare that you will be my spouse." "That's so sad. You lost your entire childhood." Ayano was taken aback by my words, but I really felt bad for her. She hasn't had an ounce of enjoyment in her life. "I promise we're going to have fun." Ayano's eyes lit up. "Fun?' "Of course." I laughed. "We're going to do all that you missed out doing while you were a child." Ayano embraced me and I felt a few of her tears as our cheeks meshed together. I think she fell in love with me at that moment. She then let go and looked at me with dreamy eyes. "Your turn." I told her about my life; a typical youth belonging to an upper middle class family, my friendship with Kagari, my time in High School and college, and of course, Kate. If she's going to be my wife, you have to start with honesty. Ayano's face fell when I mentioned Kate. "Did you love her?" "I'm not sure. If it wasn't, it was close," I answered honesty. "You can still choose her and be the Mikado. I know there is an exemption you could request." I can see a deep fear building inside Ayano. "It must have been really hard for you to say that. Very admirable, so I should say thank you for telling me, but that life is over for me now." I put my hand to her cheek. "I have accepted my duties and all they entail and that includes you." I shook my head and laughed. "Besides, me being a gaijin is hard enough on the rest of the members of the Brotherhood. I don't want to make more enemies by asking for exemptions." "Dinners ready," Tsukiumi interrupted. I stood and held out my hand and Ayano greedily accepted. I then pulled out her chair. I don't think she had anybody do that for her before. Dinner was excellent and soon after we were done, Tsukiumi started clean up. "You ready for some fun, Ayano?" She exuberantly nodded. "Then grab your coat." Tsukiumi shot me a hard glare. "Relax, we won't go far Mother." Ayano chuckled at that, Tsukiumi just continued to stare. I never know what she's thinking. Ayano and I walked by the lake for a short while, just enjoying each other's company. She pointed out a pair of snow birds and told me that they mate for life. I spotted a deer and when she was distracted, I hit her lightly with a snowball. She didn't understand why I did that. With some encouragement, she flung one at me and laughed when I slipped to avoid it. "Come join me." I laid in the snow. "Why?" Ayano was puzzled. I smiled. "Trust me." That did it. Ayano lay next to me in the snow. "Now make like you're doing a jumping jack." I moved my arms and legs and she followed suit. After a few moments, I stood and helped her up. I pointed at her snow angel. "That's how I see you, an angel." Ayano kissed me briefly on the lips and then pulled back just as quick, unsure of how I'd react. I cupped her chin and leaned in. Our lips met and it became a magical moment. Both our mouths opened slightly, each of us wanting more. My tongue slithered in and lightly caressed hers. They tangled and weaved until the need for oxygen forced us to end our embrace in a huff. "Wow." Ayano breathed out and put her hand to her lips. I smiled. "My sentiments exactly." We walked hand in hand back to the cabin. We entered and noticed it was empty. We both feared the worst until Tsukiumi startled us from behind. "Where did you go?" I asked, shaking my head. "I was within ten paces from your position the entire time, Sir." Ayano and I looked at each other and then back at Tsukiumi. "Don't you make any noise?" "That would defeat my purpose Mr. Baldwin. It's getting late; we'll be leaving after I finish cleaning up." Ayano took me by the hand and we went to the living room. The week in hiding went quickly. Several hours of Japanese language training, secret rendezvous with Ayano, and updates from Kazuki every day dissolved all my time. I also decided, at Tsukiumi's suggestion, that I would only wear the ring to meetings. She did not want us garnering undue attention to us. Like her having her katana strapped to her back when we are in public doesn't draw every eye in our direction. I chuckled at the recommendation, but followed it. By hiding the ring, it protects my position as Mikado. Soon Thursday was upon us. I was extremely nervous about the weekend. First, facing the members of the Brotherhood of Japan had me wound tighter than a spring. All I have to do is go over the progress of last year's goals, which I don't know, make new resolutions for this year, in which I have no clue, listen to new business, which I can't expect, and ruin the plans of several members by ensuring the anti -oil device is a priority. No big deal. At least no one will try to kill me there with the entire Akita clan present. If all that wasn't enough, I'm getting married Sunday. To help me relax, Ayano and I are going to a small shopping district. Tsukiumi protested, but I want to get to know the people of Japan if I'm leading a secret society to help them. "These are nice." I pointed to a set of wedding bands in the corner. Ayano smiled. "Very nice." It's a great feeling to not have to have your fiancé talk slow to understand her. She appreciates it too. I can also tell she has been doing the same with the English language, it is much better. "Do you see any you like?" I kissed her. Ayano glanced over the glass case again and then began biting her lower lip. I followed her eyes and hastened the sales woman over. "We would like to look at these, please." I pointed to the expensive bands. Ayano immediately shook her head. "Too much money." She didn't do a whole lot to convince me she didn't want them. "We'll take them." I handed the clerk my credit card and squeezed Ayano's waist. "They were too much." Ayano shook her head. I could see the happiness in her eyes. "Ayano, I only plan on getting married once." I kissed her. "Connor!" A voice yelled from a few shops over. "There you are. I've been worried sick." I looked up to see Kate running towards me. When she was within ten feet, Tsukiumi halted her onrush abruptly. I didn't even know Tsukiumi came, but I should have guessed. "Tsukiumi, you can let go." I walked toward the two of them. "Kate, what are you doing here?" Once Tsukiumi loosened her grip, Kate shook her off and embraced me. "Your Mom called me to see what I was doing for the holidays." She let go of me and immediately went into her pissed off stance, hands on her hips and a face masked in anger. "Imagine my surprise when I said sorry for your loss. After that, it was easy as I went through your internet history and saw flights and hotels to Kyoto, Japan. Now tell me what are you doing here?" "It's kind of a long story." I ran my hand through my hair as Ayano slipped an arm into mine, clutching me and the bag with our wedding bands tightly. "And who is this?" Kate demanded. "Kate, I'm sorry, but something happened and I'm getting married." I tried to convey my apologies. "What?" Kate screamed. "This is Ayano, my fiancé." I futilely introduced. "Explain. Now!" Kate was adamant. I tip toed through the events that led me to Kyoto. I was vague as I mentioned a secret society that Kagari belonged to and how the leadership of it passed to me. I then explained how I had to marry Ayano on Sunday. Kate calmed visibly. "Here is what we're going to do." She wrapped her arms around me, sliding between Ayano and I, trying to break her grip from my arm. "You're going to ask for some sort of exemption or something and you'll marry me." I could feel Ayano's trepidation. "I can't do that." I broke free from both girls. "I'm sorry Kate." "You're saying you'll rather have little Miss Washboard than a real woman?" Kate then stared down Ayano. "I have three days to get him back. I don't mind competition, do you?" Kate kissed me with a hunger. It took a moment, but I pulled away. "Kate, let's be civil about this." "We'll see." Kate gave me a smile that I was not prepared for as she sauntered away. It was one of wickedness. "That was unexpected." I then faced Ayano. "It's me and you." I smiled. "Me and you." Ayano wiped the tears from her eyes and nodded. At that moment, I understood I chose Ayano. I liked Kate, maybe even loved her. Kate was everything a man wants in a woman. She has beauty, intelligence, and is always full of energy. I never knew why she approached me that first day of college, but I wasn't complaining. Ayano, however, has a plain beauty and her innocence to the world astounds me. The simplest things give her pleasure. I knew I liked her and I can grow to love her, but that didn't matter. As soon as I accepted my post, I knew I was forgoing my life for the greater good, and that includes love. Ayano was best suited for the role as my wife because I knew very little about my position. If all things were equal, I don't know whom I would've chosen. The next day found me fidgeting as Tsukiumi and I went to pick up Ayano. We were supposed to make a grand entrance at the meeting to signify our future union as Mikado and the selected bride. The elevator beeped, signifying our arrival at Ayano's floor. When we exited, the hallway was empty. In a blink of an eye there were several samurai coming from each direction and more filtering in from the other rooms. Tsukiumi pushed me back in the elevator right as it shut. I heard swords clanking as I desperately tried to hit the door open button. I didn't want anyone to die for me. "Tsukiumi!" I slammed both fists at the closed doors. "Hit the button for the third floor." A voice from above stated. "No." I replied firmly. "I need to help Tsukiumi." "I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation." I then heard a clicking sound. I looked up at the shadow looming above me and I could see the end of a gun barrel. I tentatively pressed the three button on the panel and we were there in an instant. Two samurai and two other men in suits with guns greeted me. The two in suits appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent. The four surrounded me and ushered me to a room. "Ayano!" I screamed as I saw my fiancé duct taped to a chair. I made a move to rush to her side, but was halted before I even took two steps. A tall, very muscular built American man stood behind her. "We understand you've grown quite fond of her, Mikado." His voice was deep and deterring. "What do you want?" I said in a tone that implied my anger, but had a willingness to compromise. "We want to make this new found technology disappear." The man had an air of smugness about him. "At first we wanted the ring for ourselves, but with the Akita's investigating the death of the head of their clan, we decided to keep you as a figurehead. I'm sure she fought gallantly until the very end." I couldn't help the few tears that escaped as I thought about Tsukiumi. "You marry whom we tell you to marry and surround yourself with our bodyguards." The man continued. "If you don't do what we ask, if you even think about trying to leave, you're family dies." A wicked smile curled his lips. "Oh yes, we know exactly where you're mother, father, and sister are located." "What about Ayano?" "Her death will serve as a warning." He pulled a knife and put it to Ayano's throat. "Ayano!" I tried to go forward but the four men holding me back were too strong. Seeing my futile attempt, the man smiled. "Say goodbye." "Wait." In walked Kate from the adjoining room. She caressed my face as I was still being held. "I tried to be, what was the word you used, ah yes, civil about this, but you just had to choose this trained cunt over me." "Are you telling me you're behind this?" The betrayal echoed in my voice. "Not exactly." Kate laughed. "I believe I told you my father was in advertising, but that was a lie. He actually owns the largest oil refinery in the United States. I went to Georgetown to get close to Kagari. Since he was engaged, what better way to get close to him than to be with his best friend? With the information I gave, he was an easy target. Your relationship to Kagari got him killed." She forcibly grabbed my hair and made our eyes lock, mere inches apart. "You know, I really did fall in love with you. So what did this harlot do to you to unravel the months of effort I put into our relationship?" She released me and walked over to Ayano. "It certainly isn't looks. I'm one hundred times more beautiful. Was it sex? It can't be intelligence because she's tied to a chair because she thought I came to apologize. Stupid Bitch." She slapped Ayano. "Tell me, Connor, what made her so damn special!" I looked at Ayano and couldn't help the slight smile as I remembered the week together. I answered honestly. "It was her innocence." I nodded, reaffirming my statement. "Her every reaction to even the most insignificant detail was always one of wonder. It was like I was showing her the world for the first time." "I can be like that for you. At least I now know how to act to please you when we are married." "Wait. What?" Kate grabbed the knife from the man and looked at Ayano. "I also lied about minding competition. I fucking hate it. It's time to rid myself of mine forever." At that moment, Tsukiumi flew through the window, her bloodied katana drawn. She appeared as if she already fought in the battle of her life; sweat dripping down her face, her hair matted down, and she was breathing heavily. Everybody's attention now focused on her. She used everyone's mental lapse to her advantage, as she wasted no time or movements. Her first action was the immediate threat of the knife. She karate chopped downward with her left hand, causing the knife to fall and stick in the floor between Ayano's legs. The two samurai charged. She blocked the first man's swipe of the sword with her katana then immediately ducked to avoid contact from the second. She used her left leg to kick the second man in the stomach, pushing him back. The first swordsman was now on his second attempt to cut down Tsukiumi. From her lowered position, she did a somersault into the man's blind spot and used her right leg to sweep kick him to the floor. She then brought her left elbow down hard on his throat. I swear his throat went as a flat as a pancake before expanding back, followed quickly by blood coming from his mouth. The second man lunged at her, but she had to have seen him through the mirror as jumped up onto the dresser and did a back flip over him. I saw the point of her katana come through his chest and quickly back out. "Do something!" Kate commanded to the muscle bound thug next to her as she was still rubbing her wrist from where Tsukiumi hit her. He wrapped Tsukiumi from behind and squeezed. She struggled, but to no avail. "Your fancy little moves are no match for my strength." He tightened his grip and Tsukiumi gasped. "It was entertaining." Tsukiumi flipped both her legs up and they engulfed his neck. I cannot believe her flexibility as her feet are literally behind her head. As the man's clutch weakened, the rest of her body slipped down. Her whole body then twisted and the crack that came from his neck reverberated in the room. The sound sent a shiver down my spine. Or that could have been the two guns now aimed at the back of my head. Tsukiumi popped back up in an instant and put her blade to the throat of Kate. "Mine for yours." After a moment's pause, I was pushed forward but I could still sense their guns were pointed at me. "You're turn." One of them said in a heavy accent. I slowly turned and backpedaled as Tsukiumi walked Kate forward, her blade never leaving her neck. The two men instinctively backed up, with me still in their crosshairs. They were scared of my bodyguard. The man on the left grabbed a hold of Kate's wrist and pulled her away. As he did, the other pulled the trigger, but Tsukiumi saw it and her sword removed his hand at the wrist. I flinched as the bullet grazed my ear. The three fled down the hall. Walking My Friends Path Ch. 01 I rushed over to Ayano and struggled at the tape before grabbing the knife in between her legs. "Thank you Tsukiumi. I will never be able to repay you for what you have done." I cut the tape and Ayano and I embraced in a most heartfelt hug. "We're late for the meeting Sir." Tsukiumi announced. After the pomp and circumstance of Ayano and I standing hand in hand going to each table and showing the members we were to wed on Sunday. When we did our final bow on stage, a round of applause erupted from only four of the thirty tables and then we took our place at the head table. With Ayano's guidance, I made it through old business. During new business, I pressed my authority for the first time. I exiled the famed Orimura samurai clan from the Brotherhood. They were the samurai who attacked me at the hotel earlier. We still don't know which group was in league with them. Whichever it is, they have powerful connections with Middle Eastern and American oil tycoons. After the ensuing chaos, my order stood and they were cleared from the building. I heard every motion. Whether I spoke yes or no, I always gave my reasons. A few items I sent to a vote, allowing diplomacy to prevail. That impressed some of the members. The topic of the anti-oil device came up and as expected, there was heated debate. I listened carefully to both sides. I wanted to be objective. The only arguments against were how people would have to buy new cars and not all can afford them and the loss of jobs when oil companies would be forced to close their doors. They were weak arguments as the people would love to be able to not have to buy gas for their cars and new jobs will open up when the factories are built to mass-produce the device. I stood to answer this one. "After careful thought, I have decided in favor of Harashima Enterprises and the Lysengic Corporation to proceed in changing the world. The benefits of this device are too great to deny and who am I to stand in the way of a better tomorrow." Ayano clutched my hand and I knew I had her full support. After new business, I proceeded with my goals for the New Year. I didn't ask for much, just peace and prosperity for all, that and an anti-oil device. I reminded them I was enforcing something Ayano told me my predecessor did; an unannounced visit once every other month to every organization in the Brotherhood of Japan to guarantee my will is done. A new reign is beginning and I am the Mikado. * Author's Note: If you would like to know the history of Tsukiumi, read the "More Than Words" series. Walking My Friends Path Ch. 02 As always, thanks to Boheminxen for editing. * Chapter 2: Avenging My Friend The marriage was a lovely affair. It consisted of Ayano, Tsukiumi, a monk, and me in a small, private room. There was more to showing off our union to the Brotherhood of Japan than the wedding itself. Since I must marry, I am pleased it is with Ayano. She looked absolutely stunning in her white silk kimono. Ayano was elated to finally being able to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming the Mikado's wife and once again expressed her love and faithfulness to me. The one disheartening transpiration was that no one came. We knew my family wasn't coming. Why would they, I didn't invite them, but the surprise was that her family didn't come. The only evidence they even acknowledged their daughter's wedding was a note written from her Mother saying that she will always love her and hopes she has a great life. I was shocked. "Do you know why no one came?" I asked as I put my carry-on in the overhead compartment. "It's because you're not Japanese," Ayano stated as she buckled her seatbelt. "If that was a problem, why did your father press you to marry me? I would have never have known." I sat next to her and held her hand. "He didn't, I did." Ayano gazed into my eyes. "Really?" I asked insinuating that I was hoping for more information. "As soon as he saw you were not Japanese, he was ready to back out. It would have dishonored the family, but he didn't care." Ayano smiled. "But I knew after you stood up to everyone, you were an honest, courageous man and deserved to be the Mikado. I wanted to at least meet you and see for myself, and then Tsukiumi called and said you wanted to go on a date. I don't think a Mikado has ever tried to get to know his future bride before the wedding in the entire history of the Brotherhood of Japan. I'm yours now, not my father's and I will love and honor you forever." "And I you," I said sincerely, and then added sympathetically, "But I am still sorry about your family." "We all follow our own paths in life and now mine and yours are the same." Ayano put her head on my shoulder. "Just be who you are and I'll be happy." We landed in Washington D.C. at five in the evening. Tsukiumi insisted on handling the carry-on bags and we made our way through the tunnel. My sister, Valerie, a ten-year-old tomboy, darted toward me. Tsukiumi didn't hesitate. She dropped the bags, dove between Ayano and me, and had my sister's arm bent behind her back with her right hand. My Dad was none too happy and charged Tsukiumi. Still holding onto Valerie, she knocked his arm away with her left palm as he tried to grab his youngest child. She then kneeled down and drove her left shoulder into his knee. My Dad fell immediately on to his stomach and she straddled his back, put her left hand to his forehead, and pulled back. All this happened before I was able to say, "No Tsukiumi, this is my family." Tsukiumi quickly released her captives and helped up my Dad. "I humbly apologize for my impulsiveness." She then bowed. My father looked at me and without even asking, I knew he demanded an explanation. "Hi dad." I hugged him and he slowly returned it, still waiting for the clarification. I turned toward Valerie, and she was rubbing her arm. "Hey Val, how's the slap shot?" I picked her up as I embraced her. "It's good, but who are these people and why did she attack me?" Valerie pointed at Tsukiumi. Leave it to a child to say what is on the adult's mind. "I'll tell you soon, where's Mom?" "At home, cooking a big family dinner," Dad responded, irritated. "Oh. Well, this is Ayano and this is Tsukiumi. Please allow me to explain who they are when we get home. I really only want to say this once." The drive to the old family homestead, a three-story condo, was made in near silence. Valerie was the only one willing to talk. Leave it to a child to ignore the big elephant in the room, or in this case car. As soon as I entered, Mom had me in a bear hug. "We missed you for Christmas -- welcome back Connor." After a moment, she appeared startled and pulled back. "Oh, you've brought guests." Her eyes were looking over my shoulder. "Please come in. Any friend of my son's is a friend of ours." "I'm not so sure," I heard my dad mumble as he kissed my mom. "Well?" I took a deep breath. "Mom, Dad, this is Tsukiumi, my bodyguard." "Bodyguard?" My mom shook her head. "Believe me, Barb, she is very good at her job," My dad added. "Well, that's good to know Dennis, but Connor, tell me why you need a bodyguard?" My mom stared at me curiously. "I will, but there is someone even more important to meet." I put my arm around Ayano's waist and moved her to the forefront. "Ayano, this is my Mother and Father, Barb and Dennis Baldwin." I looked at my parents. "Mom, Dad, this is Ayano, my wife." Their looks were priceless as they both stood mouth agape, utterly stunned. Mom blinked. "When did this happen?" "Sunday." "And what about Kate?" "I don't like Kate." I shook my head. "And I haven't seen her since she tried to kill me." "I thought you two were good together. Just because she wanted to see you doesn't mean she was trying to be clingy or smother you," My dad defended. "And that also doesn't mean you have to go marry the first girl you meet afterward." "No, you really don't understand: she had two men hold guns to the back of my head as she tried to cut Ayano's throat," I stated matter-of-factly. "Look here, a bullet grazed my ear." I pointed to the cut on my earlobe. "Now, what's for dinner? I'm famished." Over dinner, I explained everything and left no detail out. My parents began to worry about my predicament but didn't say too much. My mom was adamant that we hold a wedding of our own, as the first one didn't count because she wasn't there. Ayano liked the idea, and once the women decide something like that, my opinion doesn't count. The three of us stayed at my parents place for the next week. Ayano and I shared my old room and Tsukiumi patrolled the house. Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever seen her sleep. We found a place of our own and moved shortly after the New Year. Having a bodyguard makes college that much more fun. Seeing a college professor shit his pants when Tsukiumi pulled her sword on him because he demanded her removal made for an exciting day. This is why they were waiting until Kagari was out of college to promote and marry him. All too soon, it was time for my first trip back to Japan for my unannounced visits. The religious members received me warmly and gave some very good ideas on peace. The Akita samurai's were overly nice, but I'm sure that was because Tsukiumi is the head of their clan. Most of the businesses were indifferent to me. They showed me around and I got to know key personnel. We were met with a great amount of enthusiasm at Harashima Enterprises. We were chaperoned to the main office, fifty stories in the air. "It is a pleasure to finally meet the famed Mikado." The young man in the black suit shook my hand firmly and then bowed to me. "And this must be the lovely Ayano and talented Tsukiumi." He smiled at the women. "I'm Daijiro Harashima. I apologize my father, Chikao, and my older brother, Daitaro are unable to receive you today as they are at a conference. Please accept my hospitality in showing you around." "Not a problem," I said cheerfully. "I'm looking forward to seeing the anti-oil device in person." "Of course you are." Daijiro hit an intercom button. "Minato, Karasuba, can you please come in here?" An older man, also in a black suit and a stunning young woman wearing a blue skirt and white blouse quickly entered the office. Daijiro wasted no time in giving orders. "Minato, please take our guests and give them a detailed guided tour that includes a demonstration of the anti-oil device. Karasuba, ensure tea is ready in the main conference room immediately following." He then turned his attention towards the three of us. "If it is satisfactory to you, I will meet you in the conference room following your tour to go over any questions you may have." "We'll see you there," I replied and then the three of us followed Minato to the elevator. Minato was extremely knowledgeable and I took in an abundance of information. Harashima Enterprises is on the cutting edge of technology and several projects piqued my interest. I was truly in awe at the demonstration of the anti-oil device. Instead of oil, it used water to power engines. Remarkable. I could hardly contain my excitement as we sat down to drink our tea. I went through two cups before Daijiro showed up. "I humbly apologize for keeping you waiting." Daijiro sat at the head of the table. "I trust the tour went to your liking." "Yes," I said and then yawned. All the walking combined with the excitement wore me out. "Any questions I can answer for you, Mikado?" "I was curious when the anti-oil device would be available for mass manufacturing?" I yawned again and my head nodded. "Sorry Daijiro, I'm not trying to be disrespectful. It's been a hectic week." "I understand," Daijiro smiled, "and in response to your question, four months." I regained consciousness with a migraine headache that would put a jackhammer to shame. The room I was in only had the mattress I was laying on as far as furnishings and it was hot. I had already begun sweating through my clothes due to the sweltering heat. "What the fuck happened?" I wiped my eyes before opening them, now realizing I said that to no one. I was awake now. "Ayano? Tsukiumi?" I ran for the door to find it locked. I pounded with cruel violence on the non-yielding door. "Let me out of here! Where's my wife?" A voice that spoke a language, one that I didn't understand, answered my call as I heard the jingling of keys on the other side of the door. I stepped back so I wouldn't be hit and an Arabic man entered with an automatic weapon in his hands. He waved it, encouraging me to step into the hallway. He took me to a room down the hall. The odor of cigar smoke filled my nostrils and there was a black sheet hanging the length of the room, shortening the width of it by six feet. Near the back wall was a desk with a short, overweight, balding man with a peppered mustache sitting behind it along with a big muscled bodyguard standing behind him. "Welcome to Qatar my friend." He had an accent but his English was surprisingly good. "I'm Sheik Abdul Nebi." "Where's my wife?" I stared him down. "I see you are not wearing the ring." The Sheik took a puff of his cigar. "I asked you a question," I demanded. "Please Mr. Baldwin, sit down." The Sheik gestured toward the chair in front of the desk. "We are negotiating right now." I was forcibly sat in the chair by the brute behind me. "Negotiating for what?" "You have a ring I want, Mr. Baldwin. I'm sure there is something I have that would be of interest to you. Money, cars, belly dancers if that is what you like. Just tell me where to find this ring." "Not interested," I was steadfast. "Nothing materialistic?" The Sheik gestured to the sheet. "How about a loved one?" The bodyguard tugged the sheet and revealed Tsukiumi tied down to a chair. "Where's Ayano?" My patience was gone as I insisted. "I do not know." The Sheik chuckled. "She was not part of the deal to bring you here." "I'll give you the ring for both Tsukiumi and Ayano." I didn't care about the world anymore. I was concerned for my spouse and bodyguard. "I'm sure someone of your position can arrange for my wife to be brought to me." "I can get you anything else but her." I stood up. "Then you will never have the ring." "I see she has you, what is the term, pussy whipped. Mr. Baldwin, I'm sure you can find another. Someone like Kate Upshaw perhaps?" The Sheik laughed. "Where are you going?" I took a couple steps towards Tsukiumi. "Without Ayano, I have no fear of death. I'm releasing my friend and leaving. You can shoot me if you want." Tsukiumi immediately leaned forward and to the right, all her weight one her right leg and the front right leg of the chair. I almost stopped in awe of her balancing act. The Sheik said something in Arabic and I heard footsteps coming behind me. In an instant, I was shoved to the left by Tsukiumi's left shoulder as she dropped the left part of the chair to the ground, planting both her feet to the floor. Using them as a springboard, she pushed forward into the bodyguard who was right behind me and drove him into the Sheik. She spun quickly and slammed the chair against the wall. The man with the automatic weapon came running around, but didn't make it passed my outstretched foot. Oops. He went barreling into the wall. Tsukiumi stood and she looked as dangerous as ever. Tied to her hands and legs were broken pieces of wood from the chair. In front of her was the Sheiks bodyguard and behind her was the man with the automatic weapon. She swung her right hand at the man in front of her and missed with her punch, but the piece of wood pierced his face. At the same time, her left leg shot back and jabbed the man behind her and he staggered back. The bodyguard, however, was unfazed by the attack and appeared pissed. With a loud grunt, he dropped his elbow to her back, causing Tsukiumi to fall to one knee. She immediately bolted back up, landing an uppercut under his chin. The impact of the wood sent him into his boss. The Sheik started yelling for what I assume was assistance as he couldn't get the big man off of him. The man that was behind her wrapped the strap from his weapon around her neck and tightened so hard that I could see the whites of his knuckles. Tsukiumi began struggling, her hands clutching at the fabric restricting her air supply. I charged toward him, but I was instantly shrugged off with a laugh as his elbow caught my jaw. I hit the floor and felt powerless as I watched him hold her small frame in the air. Tsukiumi's legs came together and in one motion, they came back and up. Her feet, and the wood attached to them, impacted into the thug's groin. He collapsed to his knees. If he wasn't trying to kill my friend, I would've felt sorry for him as that hurt me just seeing it. As soon as her feet hit the floor, she spun, and with her left leg, clobbered him across the face. As the bodyguard woozily tried to stand, she flung both her arms towards him and with the wood, sandwiched his face at the temples. He was done for. She then grabbed a letter opener from the desk. "Where do we find Ayano?" Tsukiumi held the letter opener to the neck of the Sheik. "I don't know," The Sheik nervously responded, "She wasn't part of the deal." "I don't believe you." Tsukiumi poked the letter opener into his neck slightly, causing a small stream of blood to flow. "The next movement will be much deeper so I would answer me." "She never left Japan. Our contact at Harashima Enterprises said her safety was purchased by someone else." The Sheik then smiled. "It doesn't matter. You two will be de..." Tsukiumi smacked him hard on the back of his head and the Sheik slumped into his chair. "I want you to head east to Port of Doha." She handed me an end to a larger piece of rope. "I'll meet you there." "What am I supposed to do with the rope?" I was perplexed. "Out the window. I will ensure you make it safely to the ground." "What about you?" "Someone has to stay to deal with the swarm of guards that are responding to the silent alarm he triggered. We have 46 seconds until their arrival." As I meandered my way east, all I could think about was the well-being of Tsukiumi. I fell the last three feet from that window because she had to start fighting. What did I do to become worthy of such devotion? It took me over three hours to arrive at Port of Doha. It wouldn't have taken so long if I actually knew where Port of Doha was. It took a myriad of inquiries before someone pointed me in the right direction. The world needs to adopt a universal language. I don't care which one, but it would be nice if we could all communicate with each other. "What took you so long?" A smile adorned my face as I turned to find Tsukiumi holding a couple bags of food and water. "You made it." I ran over and hugged her. "Sir, I appreciate the sentiments but the next ship leaving for Japan is departing in 30 minutes. I found our way aboard, but we need to get moving." It took us a week to get to Chiba Port in Japan. Hiding away in the belly of a container ship is not the ideal way to travel. Once there, we met up with Kuzuki. A quick bite to eat, a change of clothes, and a set of weapons for Tsukiumi later and we were back to business. We wasted no time in locating Daijiro Harashima residence. We waited in his living room for him to come home. It was well after midnight when he stumbled in smelling of alcohol and having a just as intoxicated woman giggling on his arm. They were literally holding each other up. "Good evening Daijiro. Where's Ayano?" I asked from my seated position in the black leather chair, announcing our presence. Daijiro fell back against the wall with a look of disbelief strewn about his face. The woman he was with appeared to sober immediately. "I'm glad I got paid in advance." She extricated herself from the high-end apartment hastily. "Come on Daijiro, where is my wife? Or would you prefer Tsukiumi ask you?" Tsukiumi strode forward and the weasel caved. "Her father, Hideki Nakamura has her." Daijiro slid down to the floor, cowering under Tsukiumi's shadow. "Please don't hurt me." "And why are you, a high ranking member of Harashima Enterprises, a company developing the anti-oil device, in league with Middle Eastern oil?" I interrogated as Tsukiumi dragged Daijiro along the floor until he was in front of me. "You don't understand. My father hates me and is giving everything to my brother. Money, the company, everything. So I made a deal." Daijiro pleaded his case. "All I had to give them was you and my future would be secure. I needed it. I had no..." Tsukiumi knocked him out. "I apologize Sir. I could not handle listening to his drivel a second longer." "I agree. Shall we make our way to the Nakamura household?" We arrived at the home of my father at three in the morning. I'm amazed at Tsukiumi's level of being undetected. A person would need a security system that rivals Fort Knox to prevent her from entering and even that may not be enough. "Hideki Nakamura," I stated sternly and then waited a moment as I startled both him and his wife from their slumber, "you have some explaining to do." Hina really was surprised to see me. "Is that the Mikado? You said he was dead." "Be quiet," Hideki snarled back. "Dead?" I chuckled. "No, Tsukiumi and I obviously got away from the Middle Eastern faction your husband sold us to." "He did what?" Hina shouted and then put her hand to her mouth. "I said be quiet!" Hideki yelled back. "And as for you," he put his hand under his pillow, "I am disgusted at the sight of your visage. You are not good enough to be the Mikado and you are not good enough for my daughter." "Ayano and I love each other. If you cannot handle it, so be it. But why are you against the anti-oil device?" "Stupid child. Technology comes and goes. My goal was to be the Mikado. I used the device to make alliances to get rid of the Tanaka family so I could come into power. Then you had to stick your nose into business that didn't concern you." "Hideki, when did this become you?" Hina began to cry. "It was you, Father?" Ayano appeared in the doorway, betrayal and tears in her eyes. "You tried to kill my husband?" "I did it all for you, Ayano. Can't you see that?" Hideki shook his head. Walking My Friends Path Ch. 02 "No, you just said you did it all for you," Ayano replied defiantly. "You've dishonored yourself." "The Mikado is a position to help advance society, not your own ego," I stated with conviction. "And it will be mine with your death!" He pulled a revolver from under his pillow. Tsukiumi pushed me out of the way, as the shots rang out. I was lying on the floor, unharmed with her on top of me. I could feel blood dripping onto my body. "Tsukiumi, are you okay? Answer me!" There was no movement from her body. I could hear Hideki's footsteps come closer. "Without your Akita, you are nothing." He laughed. "Father, no!" Ayano ran toward him, but he shoved her to the bed. Hideki smirked. "Prepare to die." He was right on top of me now. He cocked his gun and pointed it right at my face. My body tensed up. Suddenly, Tsukiumi rolled over and chopped with her right hand, knocking the gun away. She then kicked Hideki twice with her right foot. The first landed in his stomach and then she followed that with a kick in the face while he was hunched over. Hideki staggered back, giving Tsukiumi the chance to flip onto her feet. She had two wounds, one in her left shoulder and the other on the left side of her body. She pulled out her katana and put it at his throat. Hideki looked over to his wife and daughter. Both Hina and Ayano just turned their backs to him. The katana easily dispatched Hideki. "It is over, Sir." Tsukiumi fell to one knee. As soon as Tsukiumi was cleared to fly, the three of us went back home and continued with our lives as normal. Tsukiumi was my ever present bodyguard, even if I didn't know where she was, I knew she was always close. Ayano was always on the phone, keeping in constant contact with all the organizations involved in the Brotherhood of Japan. I went back to college and changed my major to foreign services. All of us were grateful this episode in our lives had passed. Until the next meeting of the Brotherhood of Japan...
