Please note that the story is based in Australia and is written in Queen's English therefore my American audience will notice subtle differences in wording or phrases. This is the story of a family deeply involved in the world of boxing and how decisions can change the course of many lives. Copyright© 2009 by David Paul Jack Finnegan was feeling good tonight, his defence was holding up well and he was attacking as often as possible. His opponent was a higher ranked, better credentialed, more seasoned fighter. Every expert had predicted Jack would be catching z's by the 6th round. Well it was nearly the end of the 8th round and he felt he was ahead on points. The bell went and Jack raced back to his corner. Jack didn't bother sitting down as he wanted to let his opponent know he was still as strong as a lion. His trainer slapped him on the face. He only put up with that because his trainer happened to be his father. "Jack listen to me, stop fucking around and concentrate. Remember what I said stick and move, stick and move. Don't go looking for the knockout because you're leaving yourself wide open " "I can take him Dad" "Stick to the plan Jack, no funny business. We need this win; this will propel us up the rankings and open up the big money fights" Jack was momentary distracted, time stopped....his Dad was screaming at him and the crowd was roaring but Jack was looking at a beautiful red headed vision. The visions name was Cathy Reilly and she was on the arm of another man. Jack was pulled back to the present as the bell rang for the 9th round. The last thing his Dad said was "Jesus Jack forget Cathy and get your head back in the fight" The fight went the full distance. Jack was declared the winner in front of his home crowd. His Dad was jumping around like he had just won the lottery. Jack was glad to see his Dad happy because he hadn't seen him smile for a long time. His Mum's death last year had really sucked the life out of his dad. Flashing back, he had briefly thought of Cathy during the fight but that was soon forgotten as a microphone was shoved in front of him. Jack said all the right things. He thanked his support team, the crowd and his opponent John 'Killer' Cobb for a good fight. Jack headed back to the locker room for his shower and icing of his hands. As Jack stood under the shower, he couldn't believe the gall of that prick bringing Cathy to the fight tonight. He was sure he had done that on purpose to distract him and make him lose focus. The bastard would stop at nothing to keep sticking it to him. Cathy Reilly was Jack's high school sweetheart, the love of his life at one time, but now his ex-fiancée. They broke up around the time of his Mum's death. Cathy then went straight into the arms of that prick. Actually the prick had the name Billy Finnegan. Billy Finnegan was a Sports Agent and Jack's older brother. Jack's thought process was interrupted with Gary calling out to him. "Jack what the hell are you doing in the shower. Get out here so I can check your hands." "Dad they are fine, you worry too much. Cobb's head will be sorer than my hands" Jack laughed "Jack don't be a smart ass, we were lucky at times tonight. We have a lot to work on in the Gym Now let's see those hands" Jack had suffered a break in his right hand in a previous fight and Gary wanted to make sure there was no re-occurrence of the injury. "They appear fine, so ice them down now son." "On it now Pop" He left Jack to ice his hands and change into his street clothes. Gary then went about gathering all the boxing gear. There was a loud knock at the door. Gary Finnegan opened the door to see his son Billy and Cathy Reilly standing outside. "Hey Dad, we just wanted to come by and congratulate you and Jack on the win tonight. You really gave it to my client" "Thanks Billy. Listen it's probably not the best time right now. I need to check Jack over, so why don't you and Cathy come over Sunday for lunch at the house" "Sure Dad no problem, I'll see you then" Cathy just nodded her head and slowly walked off with Billy. They both went back towards the arena. Gary hated being in the middle of this war between his two sons. He loved both his sons but they were both stubborn little bastards. Gary secretly blamed Cathy Reilly for the problems in his household but he held his tongue. For the life of him, he couldn't understand why Cathy ran straight into Billy's arms when Jack broke off their engagement. Oh to be young and foolish again he thought. Jack had heard the exchange at the door and thought it might be a good idea to head to the beach this weekend for some R&R. He would be damned if he was going to spend Sunday with his brother and ex-fiancée. With that thought, Jack began to slowly pack up his gear and went to speak with his Dad. "Dad...I think you were right about the fight. I need to rethink my ring strategy and get some R&R" "Well son I guess that isn't such a bad idea. Where were you thinking of going?" "I thought I'd talk to Uncle Matt and see if I could use his beach house for a few days." "Ok son sounds like a plan. I will ring Matt and let him know you need the beach house. Leave it to me" "Thanks Pop, I'd like to go tomorrow morning if possible." With that, Gary went off to make the call to Matt. -------------------- Jack loved having generous sponsors and was very happy that his 'Uncle' Matt McEwan, owner of a business called 'Fire Power Sports' was always ready and willing to help Jack with anything and everything. Matt McEwan was also his Dad's business partner/best friend who hopefully wasn't using his beach cabin in Finbar this weekend. Jack knocked on the door and his 'Aunty' Vera opened the door. "Well, well, well the champ is here" "Hi Aunty Vera how you going?" "I'm just fine my darling. Great fight last night!" "Thanks, I could have done better but I got the win and this will open doors to the big fights." "Well I'll be there cheering you on but no doubt you need to wind down from last night's fight." "Yeah I sure do" "Well darling here are the keys to the cabin. Just relax and enjoy yourself. Matt said the place should have plenty of food" "Thanks Aunty Vera. Say hello to Uncle Matt for me." Jack had told Gary he was going to disappear for the weekend for a bit of R&R. Gary knew the real reason was that Jack was avoiding the pain of seeing Billy and Cathy together. Gary reasoned the boy did deserve a break for a few days after his fine performance against 'Killer' Cobb. Somehow, he had to resolve this stupid feud between his boys. Sunday would give him the chance to speak with Billy and Cathy if necessary. -------------------- Billy and Cathy had just finished making love. Billy had a huge smile on his face. Was it satisfaction from sex or did he have some plan cooking in that head of his? Cathy wondered for the umpteenth time what the hell she was doing. Well she would find out why Billy seemed extra happy. It was funny considering his major client just got beaten by his brother. "Billy is everything okay?" "Sure it is sweetheart, why would you think otherwise?" "Well your fighter did get beaten last night" "Oh well honey you win some, you lose some. Jacky boy should remember that." "What the hell do you mean by that?" "Nothing Cathy. Just that in boxing a man's fortunes can change at any given time." With that, Billy gave her a kiss, turned over and went to sleep. Cathy could not sleep as she had too much on her mind. Well really one thing on her mind apart from Billy's cryptic answers was Jack. As usual, Jack looked magnificent in the middle of that ring. Cathy had to admit though, she still hated watching him fight for fear of him getting badly hurt. Cathy silently shed some tears wondering how something that was so right for such a long time had now turned into a bad nightmare. -------------------- Jack had just left Matt McEwan's house with the keys to the beach house in his hands. It was only 7am Saturday morning and he had a long drive ahead of him. Beside him in his truck was his faithful dog, a Border Collie called Bidgee. He still laughed about his dog's name. He was not the one who named his dog. Jack had been given Bidgee by an old sparring partner a couple of years ago. The man who had given him the Border Collie was Neil Luff. Neil was born in New Zealand but spent his teens in Australia. Neil was glad for the move as it was a more competitive fight arena in Australia. The dog was named after the 'Murrumbidgee River' in Australia. This was the river that Neil had fished and swam in when he was a young man. Neil had got the dog as a training partner when he did road work. He gave Jack the dog before leaving Australia. Neil had run into some visa problems in Australia and was sent back to New Zealand. -------------------- As Jack drove towards the beach house, he went over the fight. Jack was secretly very pleased, as he knew doors would now be opening for him at the tender age of 23 years. Jack was looking at a promising career as long as he kept his focus more completely centred on boxing. Jack arrived at the beach house around 10 am. Bidgee jumped out of the truck and ran barking at some birds that had landed near the house. Jack quickly unloaded the truck. As Vera had told him, Matt had left the house well stocked with food and booze. Jack went out back and switched the heater on for the spa so it would be ready to get into later in the day. Jack decided to take Bidgee for a walk and a swim in the ocean. He quickly got changed, grabbed a beach towel and called Bidgee. She was the only female Jack trusted now, with his mother no longer around and his ex-fiancée, just that, his ex. The ocean was warm and inviting. Jack felt thoroughly refreshed as he swam in the water for about 15 minutes and then got out and dried off. After a run on the beach, Jack and Bidgee made their way back to the beach house. Jack fed and watered his dog and left her on the enclosed deck to sleep. He had a quick shower to rinse off the salt water and sand and then changed into shorts and a t-shirt. Being around 1pm, Jack put together a light meal and ate. With that done, Jack grabbed a light beer. Jack knew he should not have been drinking but he felt he deserved a few. Anyway, his next fight was yet to be decided so it would not hurt his body too much. Jack sat down outside on the deck and watched the ocean. Feeling totally relaxed after his first beer he decided to have a second. Sitting outside and watching the waves, his mind betrayed him and he started to reflect on his sometimes painful past.... -------------------- Jack had a good childhood overall. He grew up in a rough neighbourhood in Mayson New South Wales where you had to be on the lookout for trouble at all times. His family were just getting by but the household was full of love. His Dad Gary was a cop. Gary Finnegan was a man who could have made detective but he loved being in uniform and patrolling the streets with his partner Matt McEwan. Jack's Mum Lisa worked a register at the local grocery store part time. Lisa was a loving Mother who ensured she was home in the afternoons to be with her children when they returned from school. Billy was Jack's older brother by 4 years and they were as close as two brothers could be. Billy looked out for Jack and vice versa. Gary started teaching both boys to box at a pretty young age. Gary had been a pretty decent amateur boxer growing up but he turned out to be an even better trainer and was always in high demand. Gary helped run a boxing program in the neighbourhood out of 'Harry's Gym'. The gym was owned by an ex fighter called Harry Weaver. In reality without the help of Gary Finnegan and Matt McEwan running the boxing classes, the gym would have closed its doors long ago. Harry Weaver was once upon a time a contender for the Middle Weight crown. Now he was a bitter drunk who spent more time propping up a bar than running a gym. Fortunately, Gary and Matt each had a set of keys so the gym was always opened in the evenings for classes. Billy showed little promise as a fighter and only went through the motions to appease his Dad. Whilst enjoying the gym environment Billy was more book smart. He watched the managers who came around the gym to look at promising fighters and knew that was where the smart money was. Jack was a different kettle of fish. Gary knew straight away he had a champion in the making. Jack was a tireless trainer, quick to learn, had a strong right hand and was fearless. He looked at home in the ring and everyone could see it. Lisa was not thrilled with Jack's love affair with boxing but she trusted her husband completely. Lisa knew Gary would not endanger Jack at such a young age sparing against boxers outside his ability or range of skills. Lisa was much happier that Billy seemed to have more interest in books than boxing. Gary had to keep a tight rein on Jack, as he was headstrong and chomping at the bit to start competing. Gary wanted to develop Jack a bit more prior to starting his amateur boxing career. It got more difficult for Jack as Billy was already competing in tournaments as a 12 year old. 8 year old Jack loved to watch his older brother box and his Dad even let him work the corner. Jack would always copy ring jargon to throw in his advice to Billy when working the corner. "Knock him out Billy, Knock him out" Jack would always say each round. Billy would always reply with "Anything for you little brother." Billy won more fights than he lost but not by much. Gary knew Billy was not going to set the world on fire but Jack had something. It seemed he was born to box. -------------------- The schedule Jack maintained was set in stone when he was 8 years old. Get up, go to school, come home, homework, boxing, dinner and bed. On weekends, Jack and Billy would workout on Saturdays and have Sundays off. Although there was, a 4 year age gap the Brothers still did a lot together. Due to their rigid schedules, they had no time to get into trouble. Things continued that way for many years. At the age of 10, Jack began his amateur career and he won most of the time. The brothers were still very tight and looked out for each other. Things changed when Jack was 12 & Billy was 16. It came in the form of 12 year old Cathy Reilly and Billy's decision to quit competitive boxing. By 16, Billy had enough of being in the ring and so he quit. Gary was not pleased but Lisa was delighted. Jack could actually recall some of the conversation the day Billy quit. It all happened at the Gym. Jack had been working out for 30 minutes and Billy had suddenly appeared in his school clothes. Gary was helping Jack with a combination when Billy appeared. "Jesus Billy where the hell have you been! You'll be doing extra fitness work now" Gary proclaimed "Dad I need to speak with you" "After training we'll talk. Now get changed" "No Dad I need to speak with you now!" "Listen Boy for the last time get changed and we'll talk later" "No Dad" "What do you mean no!" You could hear a pin drop in the gym as all eyes turned to the Finnegan clan. "Dad I didn't want to do it this way but you leave me with no choice. I am not boxing anymore. You have Jack... you don't need me." "Son be reasonable..." "Dad please I thought about this long and hard and I'm out. I'll see you at home." The house was very icy for a long time and you could cut the tension with a knife. Gary then poured all his efforts into Jack. If Billy was upset, he did not say. -------------------- So Billy drifted away and was only interested in his school work and hanging out with his friends. Jack was upset with the decision of his older brother. Jack felt he lost his best training partner and confidant. Jack did not have too much time to mourn the loss of his brother from boxing. Soon a cute little red headed girl called Cathy Reilly distracted him. Cathy Reilly was new to the neighbourhood. Her family had fallen on hard times as her father had been injured in a car accident and could no longer work. Cathy's mother Lyn was now the main breadwinner and her Mum had to work two jobs to ensure they survived. Jack was instantly smitten. Whilst he was fearless in a boxing ring, he was completely out of his depth talking to the female species. Life kept on keeping on and Jack only admired Cathy from afar. Things began to change near Jack's 13th Birthday. Gary decided to quit the force, which had come about from being involved in a near fatal shooting. Then Matt McEwan his former partner gave Gary an intriguing offer. Matt had retired from the force and had opened a store called 'Firepower Sports' and it was exceedingly successful. The store was doing so well in fact that Matt wanted to open another store on the other side of the city. Matt asked Gary if he would run it for him. The offer was too good to refuse so Gary agreed. Billy being nearly 17 at the time wanted a car so he landed a part time job working with Gary. Gary had begun searching for an Assistant Manager who could run the store in his absence when he had other commitments. Gary found his Assistant Manager when Lyn Reilly came for an interview. Naturally once Lyn began work both Gary and Billy came to know her well. They both found out Lyn had moved into the neighbourhood in the last year because of her husband's condition. Gary and Lyn soon became firm friends and with the money Lyn now made she was able to quit her second job. The families soon became friends and often had cookouts on the weekends. Jack was delighted as he now had a venue to speak with Cathy outside of school. With all the time the Reilly and Finnegan families spent, together it was only a matter of time before a friendship blossomed between Jack and Cathy. Jack still maintained his strict regime but whereas years before Billy & Jack would spend all their spare time together, it was now Jack and Cathy. By the time, Jack had reached 14 he was starting to really make a name for himself in amateur boxing circles. Billy at 18 decided to work full time at 'Firepower Sports' while attending night school to gain his business degree. Around that time Harry Weaver passed away, years of drinking had finally taken its toll. Harry had no family to speak of so it was a very small funeral. The shock came later that week when Gary and Matt found out they were the new owners of 'Harry's Gym'. As per the instruction in Harry's will, they now owned it lock, stock and barrel. Gary and Matt made the decision to refit the gym out with new equipment and started attracting more legitimate trainers and boxers. Gary and Matt put their business heads together and in a short time, the gym was doing a pretty good trade. Billy was then asked to run the Gym during the day and the nights when available. All in all life was going pretty well for the Finnegan family. Jack in the meantime was winning titles and travelling to various events. As Gary had a flexible schedule the father and son team went to events together throughout the country. The thing Gary was most pleased about was the attitude Jack displayed when he lost. Jack took the loss on his chin and went back to the drawing board to find out what went wrong. The boy was learning and honing his craft. There were some bad losses but he kept on fighting. -------------------- Love was blossoming between Jack and Cathy but it was a near tragic event that pushed them together and brought those suppressed feelings to the forefront. The neighbourhood was changing for the better but there were still bad elements about. The worst element was a local neighbourhood gang called the "Westies". The Westies were a mix of hoods, thieves and general riff raff. The gang ranged in ages from 13 to 22 years of age and most of them were on the track for a life time spent in and out of the correctional system. The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 01 Jack had got out of school late as he had been pulled up by his English Teacher to discuss the paper he had submitted. Jack and Cathy generally walked to and from school together. The unwritten rule was that after school, they would wait up to 15 minutes for the other and after that time lapsed the person, waiting would start walking home. Jack figured he must have missed Cathy by maybe 5 minutes. Jack started to jog home in hopes of catching up to Cathy. As Jack ran passed an alley he spotted a group of about five boys milling around two people on the ground. It took Jack about 10 seconds to register that Cathy was one of the two on the ground. Jack stopped instantly and went quietly into the alley. Cathy was struggling on the ground, her dress was ripped and her mouth was bleeding. She was screaming out for help. The Westies as part of their initiation would make a potential member commit a felony. Rape was a favourite choice. The boy on top of Cathy was talking non stop. "You gonna love what I'm packing bitch" "Get off me you bastard!" "Listen you little red headed whore, you are gonna take it all" "Baby I'm gonna fuck you so good. You're gonna bleed for a week" "Hey boys once I'm finished we can all have a piece of this little slut" Jack did not think but acted. Jack said nothing, as he needed the element of surprise. He began by blindsiding the first Westie he saw. Soon the remaining group forgot about Cathy and focused on Jack. It was a vicious fight of six against one. Jack used every weapon available in the alley as well as his fists. Jack had just finished punching the last member of the group when Cathy screamed out his name. Jack felt a sharp pain on top of his shoulder blade. When Jack whirled around he found himself staring at a boy of about 16. The punk held a bloody knife in his hand. The punk started taunting Jack but made the fatal mistake of not being the aggressor. Jack literally saw red; he hit the boy on his knife hand with a piece of lumber. This knocked the knife out of the punk's hand. Jack then used every pugilistic skill he knew and applied that on the face and body of his tormentor. Jack finally stopped after he heard Cathy screaming his name repeatedly. The boy was unconscious and his body was badly broken up. Blood was still pouring out of the wound on top of Jack's shoulder. Cathy tore Jack's shirt off. She then applied pressure to the wound. "Oh Jack please don't die. You saved me, you saved me!" "It's ok Cathy; it'll be all right.. Are anymore of those punks around?" "No Jack...they are down in the alley and not moving" "Well let's get outta here before more come or the cops turn up" With that said, they staggered to Jack's house. -------------------- Lisa had been getting worried, as Jack was really late. Normal for most teenagers but not for Jack he took his boxing too seriously. There was a sudden pounding at the door. Lisa went to the door and found a pale Jack shirtless with what remained of his shirt held over an obvious wound. Cathy's dress was ripped and she had a swollen eye and a cut lip. Lisa raced Cathy and Jack straight to the hospital. At the hospital, Cathy was treated for her wounds and Jack was admitted for surgery. While waiting for Jack to come out of surgery a distressed Cathy explained the whole story to Lisa. "They were trying to rape me Mrs Finnegan but Jack saved me he saved me" was all Cathy would say at the end. Repeating it like a mantra over and over again. Lisa did not hesitate to call the police about the assault and attempted rape. The Police attended the hospital and interviewed Cathy. By that stage Gary, Billy and Lyn Reilly were at the hospital. Gary had a quick word with the detective and his partner. Both of them knew Gary Finnegan. The police soon had the suspects in custody. The boy that Jack had torn apart was in a serious but stable condition one floor above them. Police would lay charges but advised there was the possibility of bail. That was soon forgotten when Doctor Evans appeared. Jack would be fine but would not be able to box for at least 6 months. Jack would have to undergo rehabilitation but there was little doubt he would make a full recovery. Cathy was beside herself and still in a state of shock. Billy drove Lyn and Cathy home. Gary and Lisa stayed by Jack's bedside. They were both very proud of their son and the man he was becoming. Jack did recover but he was frustrated as he would not be able to touch a boxing bag, let alone put on gloves for at least 6 months. -------------------- The good news was that pressure had been applied and all six offenders plead guilty to assault and one of them to attempted rape. All the offenders would be going to be incarcerated for a lengthy period. Cathy from then on became a fixture in the Finnegan's household. Jack was her hero and she knew she loved him like no other. Jack was going through rehabilitation and was becoming moody and irritable. Jack missed boxing! The only one who could pacify his moods was Cathy. Then the unthinkable happened for Jack. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon when Cathy came over. Cathy was determined to let Jack know how she felt. She went up to Jack's room and spoke her mind. She told Jack he was her hero and she loved him. Now Jack did not know much about girls but he reckoned he knew love when he felt it and saw it. Jack then replied in kind. Jack would always remember those words Cathy spoke: "Jack I love you. You are my hero; I promise I will always be your girl. No other man will touch me." The next 6 months were the best period of his short life. Cathy made him forget about his troubles. Their young love went from strength to strength. Jack and Cathy became inseparable. Where one went the other was following. -------------------- Jack completed his rehab and soon was back boxing. Gary was amazed at Jack's recovery but he suddenly felt like he had a 'co-trainer' at the gym. As soon as Jack began training again, Cathy appeared and wanted to learn everything about boxing. Cathy seemed to be a great influence on Jack and he was training better than ever before. Gary was relieved, as he had thought Cathy would become a negative influence in the gym. With Cathy practically living at the gym it was only a matter of time before Billy became an influence. Cathy loved Jack but she had a lot of time for Billy and they soon became the best of friends despite the age difference. Gary did take note of this friendship but thought nothing more of it. -------------------- As the years flew bye things only improved for the Finnegan family. Billy completed his degree and then started looking into sports management. However, it was an unlikely meeting at the Gym that started his career path. A young boxer named John Cobb was looking for representation. Billy believed he could help find him someone worthwhile. Billy had befriended a young upstart called Peter Johns who had started a company called IMG (International Management Group). An appointment was made and Peter was very impressed with Billy Finnegan's aggressive style while negotiating a contract for John Cobb. John Cobb signed with IMG that day and so did Billy Finnegan when offered a job as Peter John's right hand man. Peter Johns demoted his protégé Scott Rankin to bring Billy into the fold. Billy Finnegan was now a Sports Agent. With Billy becoming a Sports Agent the Gym needed a Manager. Gary and Matt decided to promote Lyn Reilly to Store Manager at 'Firepower Sports'. Gary then took over the management of the Gym. This meant Gary could dedicate even more time to Jack's training needs. Jack was on top of the world. He was in love with a beautiful girl and his boxing was improving. Jack had won several junior titles in the middleweight division and had just won the National Golden Gloves Championship at light middleweight. He was a force to be reckoned with at 17 years old. Jack had the privilege of attending several national training camps. He mixed and sparred with elite boxers and got some fine tutelage from well known trainers. He ran into Billy several times as well as Billy was on the lookout for talent. It was about that time that Billy made overtures for Jack to become part of the IMG family. Billy then got really serious in his pursuit. Jack resisted as he felt he did not want any type of representation and thought agents were slimy creatures. Many times Jack had seen young amateur boxers sign with agents. The boxer was then forced into a pro career and was feed to the sharks often matched against the wrong type of opponents. No, ...his Dad's representation was all he required. It was at this point cracks in the brother's relationship began and they only got wider. Billy felt humiliated. How would it look to his boss and clients when he could not sign his own brother? So began the war of attrition and it was a take no prisoners approach. Cathy got dragged into the middle of the argument and surprisingly took Billy's side. Cathy was impressed with Billy's exciting lifestyle, which included the flash new car, city apartment and nice suits. Cathy logically assumed that Billy must know what he was doing and who better to represent her boyfriend than his own brother. Billy had taken it a step too far recruiting Cathy as his messenger. Jack had a lot on his mind...he was turning 18 and felt soon he had to decide on whether to go pro or not. Cathy applying pressure on signing with IMG made things worse. It all came to a head on Christmas Day and would have wider ramification years later. Billy knew it was only a matter of time before Jack went pro. Billy decided he would give it one last try at persuading Jack to join IMG. Christmas morning went well with the family opening presents and generally having a great time. Mid morning the McEwan and Reilly families came over for Christmas lunch. It was during lunch that the fireworks began. Billy seized his opportunity when Matt McEwan casually asked if Jack was considering going pro. Jack said he had not decided. Billy put his 2 cents worth in and started pushing his case. "Jack you need solid representation to help guide you through the world of boxing. There are a lot of sharks out there" "As I said Billy thanks but no thanks" "Look Jack. IMG represents some great boxing talent. I can make things happen for you. Cathy and I both agree this is the best thing for your future" "Leave Cathy out of this" It was starting to get heated so Gary tried to put on end to the conversation. "Billy for the love of God its Christmas, just give it a rest" "You're like a broken record; when the time is right we will organize the proper representation for Jack" "Well I hope it's with IMG!" Cathy had silently been watching the exchange, as had the rest of the table. She could see Jack starting to get angry and wondered if she should say anything. That all ended when Jack got up thanked his Mum for dinner and left the table. Cathy followed him as he went to grab his coat. "Jack wait where are you going" "For a walk ......alone" "Why are you angry with me?" "I'm sick and tired of the Cathy and Billy double act. I can decide my boxing future" "I only want to help you Jack. I love you. I want to secure our future" Before Jack could reply, Billy appeared at the door and started his sales act again. "Listen Jack before you go. I have an IMG contract with me, just sign on the bottom line and I'll take care of the rest" "Look Billy......FUCK OFF!" Cathy knew something bad was about to happen. Jack had reached his boiling point. "You ungrateful little prick! I was wiping your snotty nose for all those years; you would be nothing without me. Do you know how bad this makes me look at IMG?" "Billy I couldn't care less, I wouldn't sign with IMG if you guys were the last agency on earth" With that Jack turned to leave Billy made a fatal mistake and pushed Jack in the back. Jack whirled around and reacted. Jack sent a perfectly timed shot with his fist at Billy's nose. There was a loud crunch with Billy on the ground with a broken nose. Cathy screamed and knelt beside Billy nursing him. Jack opened the door and left. Gary found Jack hours later at the Gym training. -------------------- The brothers who were once so close were no more. They were civil towards each other at family events but in private, it was a different matter. Cathy and Jack's relationship changed and it took a long time to get it back on track. Jack felt slighted and used by Cathy. Cathy worked hard to earn his trust back while she still remained friends with Billy. It was a low key professional debut for Jack with Gary as his trainer. Cathy was ringside and blew him a kiss before the bell rang. The fight went the distance against the journeyman opponent. Jack won easily, it was a unanimous decision. Jack asked Matt McEwan to handle any business arrangements. Matt agreed. -------------------- By 20 years of age Jack was a star on the rise. However, every time he tried to go that one extra step IMG was there to block it. Gary was as frustrated as Jack and let Billy know in no uncertain terms. Billy said it was not his doing; Jack just needed to generate some interest, as he was a nobody. The war continued and Billy took every opportunity to bring Jack down. Jack however continued to flourish and his popularity grew. At 21 with a solid career established, Jack asked Cathy to marry him. Everyone had known it was just a matter of time. Cathy enthusiastically responded with a definite YES! So life continued along that path. Cathy made several attempts to help make peace between the brothers to no avail. When Jack was 22, everything changed for the Finnegan family. Lisa was driving to get some milk from the market when a truck lost control in the wet and a collision occurred. Lisa was killed instantly. Death can drive some families closer or some apart. The Finnegan's were driven apart. It was an emotional time. There was so much pain and anger. Jack became distant and aloof and would disappear for hours usually ending up at the gym. Cathy felt alone and abandoned. Billy was around to comfort his Dad but he ended up comforting Cathy. Jack and Billy no longer held in their hostility for each other. With Lisa gone and Gary an emotionless shell for the moment, Billy and Jack verbally jousted at every turn. Earlier indifference was now turning to hate. The powder keg just waited to be lit. -------------------- Jack had felt particularly bad that day. Cathy was pressuring him to consider getting an apartment together before they married later that year. Jack felt Gary still needed him and refused. They fought about the apartment but it was more about Jack's attitude about everything in his life. Cathy wanted security. Jack went running. Halfway through his run he turned around, he had to speak with Cathy and apologize. Jack came home to a rude shock. Billy's car was in the driveway. Jack mentally braced himself for the confrontation. What he found when he walked in the door cemented everyone's immediate future. Billy and Cathy were on the couch, passionately kissing and holding each other. Jack grabbed Billy by the shirt collar and physically threw him out the door. "I never want to see you again you son of a bitch. You are nothing more than a gutter rat" Billy was too stunned to answer so he got in his car and left. By then Jack's focus was on Cathy. "How the fuck could you do this to us Cathy!!" "Jack it looks worse than it is. Billy is just a friend" "You are as bad as that prick. You have conspired with that rat from the beginning." "Jack...that isn't true. I love you" Cathy cried "Love me! We are basically married and here you two are practically fucking in my father's house!" "Give me the ring... it was my grandmother's and get out. Go to Billy and leave me alone!" Cathy collapsed on the floor crying uncontrollably. Jack roughly picked her up, took back the ring and asked her to leave. Cathy soon complied. Everyone's fate was sealed. Jack refused any further contact from Cathy or Billy. Jack refused to listen because he knew what he saw and felt betrayed. Billy and Cathy found comfort with each other and eventually started dating. By then Jack moved his boxing to another level. His focus was on boxing and only boxing. Soon Billy and IMG had no choice but to deal with Jack. The fight with John Cobb was arranged and if Jack won, he would move into the big time and attract bigger game. Billy tried every tactic in the book to disrupt Jack and Matt so the contract negotiations were painful. Matt felt out of his league and told Jack so. If Jack won this fight, he would need to find a good agent in the boxing world. The contract was finally signed and the fight was on. Billy tried took one last shot at disrupting Jack. Billy brought Cathy along to watch the fight. It backfired and Jack went on to win. -------------------- After coming back from all that history, Jack decided it was time for a spa. He patted Bidgee and then finished his third beer. Jack relaxed his aching body against the warm jets. Jack had decisions to make and he thought he knew of exactly the right person to sign with. The kicker was that Billy would never see it coming! -------------------- Billy Finnegan woke up Sunday morning smiling and thinking a name. That name was Ernie Johnson. Ernie Johnson was the hottest young amateur boxer in Australia. The 18 year old Middleweight had a fantastic record and was about to turn pro. Every management company in the country had been after Ernie Johnson and after an exhausting chase, he had signed with IMG on Friday. The better news was that Peter Johns had personally asked Billy to take control of Ernie's career. The first step was finding Ernie a good trainer and training facilities. Billy had a plan that he believed would work out extraordinary well for him. There was absolutely no downside. Everyone would be forced to do it Billy's way now. The last piece of the puzzle was Gary Finnegan. -------------------- Billy and Cathy were driving to Gary's house for Sunday lunch. Cathy was feeling very uncomfortable. For starters, Billy was whistling and had been on a high all weekend. What the hell was going on? Secondly and more importantly, she was petrified that she would be seeing Jack. Cathy had no idea what to say to him. Why had she wrecked everything that had been good in her life? Why was she with Billy? Well she could answer that last one. She started seeing Billy to upset Jack and make him come back to her. What a foolish girl she was thinking that Jack would be the white knight coming to her rescue again. With that last thought, she decided to find out why Billy was so happy. "Billy" "Yes baby" "Why are you so happy? I know it wasn't just the sex last night." "Cath everything will be revealed at lunch today. I have a massive announcement that is going to be great for all of us!" "Does that include Jack?" "Jack, Jack, Jack. It is always about bloody Jack. Well after today, Jack is going to have to make a few decisions. If he toes the line, he will be well on his way. I can't say anything more until lunch. Trust me you will be delighted." Suddenly Cathy had a very bad feeling that everything was going to change....for the worse. -------------------- Jack woke up Sunday morning with a headache. How many beers did he have? Bidgee was on the bed asleep. For a border collie, she could sure be lazy. Well then again, he had gotten to bed about 1am and it was now only just coming up to 6am. Jack figured a swim would do him a world of good. So he woke Bidgee up, grabbed his towel and hit the beach. The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 01 The early morning swim was just what the doctor ordered. The water was refreshing and his head felt a lot better. Jack and Bidgee then headed back to the cabin. Breakfast was soon made and eaten by both dog and master. After cleaning up, Jack let Bidgee out for a run and followed slowly behind. Jack knew he would have to head back to the city tomorrow, as arrangements had to be made for his boxing future. He knew he would have to contact Scott Rankin today and arrange to meet as soon as possible. Scott Rankin had been Peter Johns' protégé at IMG until Billy Finnegan came on board. Scott was known as an honest, straight forward and out of the box thinker. He cared for his clients and not exclusively the bottom line. Scott was nicknamed 'Jerry Maguire' in the sports management business for the way he treated his clients. It had not taken long for Billy Finnegan and Scott Rankin to become bitter enemies. This was mostly Billy's doing. Scott had taken his demotion fairly well when Billy first joined IMG but Billy made Scott's position in the company untenable. Scott's life became miserable as Billy stole his clients within the firm, humiliated Scott in front of Peter Johns at every opportunity and generally made his life a living hell. Peter Johns thought it was great as it drove his sports agents to 'higher levels'. The breaking point came when Billy was making jokes with staff about the appearance of Scott's wife Eve. He called her the 'white ghost who walks' and that was the only printable comment he made. When he started leaving paper cut outs of what appeared to be white stick figures all around the office he crossed the line. What Billy did not know nor bothered to find out is that Eve Rankin was recovering from cancer thus her pale and skinny appearance. Scott literally did a Jerry Maguire and quit IMG taking several high profile Rugby League, Rugby Union, AFL, Soccer, Boxing and Cricket sport stars with him. To rub salt into the wounds of IMG many of these athletes were under Billy's 'management'. Scott Rankin was now IMG's biggest problem. Scott knew IMG's methods inside and out and made it his purpose to cause IMG inconvenience whenever he could. Rankin Management was a small but profitable operation and they were very well regarded. -------------------- At 9:30am, Jack made a call to Rankin Management. Even though it was Sunday Morning, he was confident that Scott would take his call. Rankin Management was run out of the Rankin's home in an attached office built on their large property. "Good Morning Eve speaking" "Hello...I was wondering if I could speak with Scott Rankin please" "Scott is busy at the moment can I take a message?" "Yes could you have Scott call Jack Finnegan when he is available?" With that, Jack left his mobile number and thanked Eve Rankin for her time. Within 2 minutes, Jack's mobile started ringing. Jack answered "Good Morning...Jack Finnegan speaking." "Jack its Scott Rankin returning your call." "Scott...thanks for calling back. I know it must be a bit of a surprise for a Finnegan to be ringing you. No doubt you may be suspicious." "Well sure I'm surprised Jack but believe me I don't hold any negative feelings towards you or your father Gary. " Jack noticed that that feeling didn't extend to Billy Finnegan nor should it he thought. "Scott I'm glad you said that. As I have been told you are a man who judges everybody individually. I could understand you not liking the Finnegan name however..." "Well Jack that's nothing to worry about. The past is the past and I should thank IMG as now I make my own decisions and run my business the way I want to. Although this is very pleasant chatting to you on this Sunday morning I'm sure you didn't ring to discuss past events that frankly have no bearing on you." "You are correct Scott. I'm sorry to bother you on a Sunday but was hoping I could meet with you tomorrow regarding representation. Scott ...Scott are you there...?" "Sorry Jack I'm just a little stunned. I mean I would love to meet with you but I have to say I just assumed you would be with IMG. I mean Billy was always bragging about you and he made it plain as day that you would be with IMG when you needed to be represented." "Well Billy doesn't make decisions for me. In fact Billy has no bearing in my life period". "Ok Jack no problem. Look I'm tied up tomorrow and then have a trip out of town for 3 days and will be back Friday. We could meet Monday morning I suppose but I don't think it would be enough time as my meeting is at 12pm and will run for the rest of the day. Friday would be better" "Scott can I ask what you and your lovely wife are doing today?" "Well actually Jack nothing special we were just having a lazy day really." "How would you like to be my guests at the beach cabin I'm currently in? I could cook a late lunch and you are more than welcome to stay the night." "Well Jack that is a mighty tempting offer. Let me speak with Eve and I'll give you a call back." "No problems Scott. I'll await your call." With that, Jack hung up and decided to check on Bidgee. Hopefully he could be well on his way on starting this process with Scott. Jack tried to give Gary a call but the phone was engaged or off the hook. As Jack hung up the phone rang instantly. "Hello" "Hi Jack its Scott." "Hi Scott what's the verdict?" "Well Jack, Eve and I would be delighted to take up your invitation. Just give us the directions and we'll be there in a couple of hours." With that, Jack gave direction to the cabin and assured Scott all would be ready on his arrival. -------------------- Gary answered the door a little after 10am and found Billy and Cathy on his doorstep. "Jesus Billy I said lunch not breakfast." "I know Dad but I need to speak with you before lunch. Is Jack around?" "No son Jack has gone away for the weekend." "Ok that's fine." "Well come on in. Hello Cathy how are you?" "Hi Mr Finnegan pretty good thanks" With that said Billy and Cathy entered the house and sat down in the living room. "Dad do you mind taking the phone off the hook?" "Sure Son.... is it that serious?" "Yeah Dad it's life changing" -------------------- Jack continued to try Gary but the phone was still engaged. He would have liked his Dad to come and meet with Scott and Eve but no matter. He thought he would give his Uncle Matt a call just to feel him out on this decision. Jack tried Matt and Vera's home phone first. "Hello" "G'day Uncle Matt...it's Jack" "Jack my boy, hope everything is okay at the cabin." "Everything is great. I really appreciate you letting me stay here." "Jack you know the Cabin is available anytime you need it. By the way great fight. You are going all the way son." "Thanks Uncle Matt I really appreciate the support you and Aunt Vera give me. Look have you got time to talk business at the moment." "Sure Jack, what's on your mind? Please don't tell me we have to negotiate with Billy and IMG again....that was the most painful experience of my life." "No Uncle Matt. I've actually taken your advice and I'm getting representation." "Oh thank god finally this family feud is at an end. Billy will be happy." "Well he won't be happy. Actually Uncle Matt I'm going with a different Management Group." "Who?" "Rankin Management. In fact Scott and Eve Rankin are coming to see me at the cabin today to discuss terms." "Have you told your Father?" "No I've been trying the home phone but it's off the hook." "Well Jack don't sign anything until you've spoken with him. All I can say is you sure like to fight. Billy will really try to stick it to you now." "I'm my own man Uncle Matt." "I know son and we are all proud of you. Just follow your instincts. Let me know how it turns out. I won't say anything to Gary until you give me the all clear." "Thanks Uncle Matt." Jack decided to sit outside and wait for the Rankin's. He had a bit of thinking to do before they arrived. -------------------- Gary passed the phone off the hook and returned to the living room with some coffee for everyone. "So life changing you say?" "Yeah Dad for everyone and I mean everyone" Cathy decided not to interrupt and just listen to the two Finnegan men talk. She had a feeling in the pit of her stomach that Jack was going to be hung out to dry. She just hoped she was wrong. "Well this isn't going to be another IMG sales pitch for Jack is it Son?" "No Dad this literally has nothing to do with Jack." "I have a name for you Dad, Ernie Johnson" "Ernie Johnson...as in Ernie Johnson, Amateur Australian Middleweight Champion, Ernie Johnson?" "The very one Dad. He signed with IMG on Friday." "Wow son that's incredible! Every man and his dog wanted to sign him." "The news gets better Dad I'm his Manager and he's going pro." "Well done Billy. That's fantastic." "Dad it's more than fantastic. He needs new training facilities and a trainer and he wants to work with the best. That's you Dad." "Son you must be kidding." "No Dad I'm not, part of the reason the kid signed with IMG was because I work there and he knew I was your son." "So what do you say Dad do you want to be on Team Johnson?" "Son I would love to train Ernie but I still have commitments with Jack." "I know that Dad but surely you could train them together?" "Well sure Son I mean if Jack is in agreement." "Why wouldn't he be Dad? You told me he needs more quality boxers around him and to work with him. Ernie Johnson fits that criteria." "For once Billy I agree completely. What's the catch?" Cathy Reilly thought to herself here it comes. Her heart felt like it was in her mouth. Jack was about to get screwed. "Well Dad it really isn't much of a catch but I need you to sign a contract with IMG today." "Why the rush Son and why the contract?" "Dad, Ernie Johnson is hot property. You wouldn't believe the hoops we had to jump through to sign this kid. We have trainers literally lined up at the door to work with IMG and Ernie. Peter Johns wants a quick answer as Ernie is IMG's star recruit otherwise he wants me to sign another trainer tomorrow. Dad, Ernie wants to work with you. He respects Jack as a fighter and knows you are the man behind his rise to the top." "I wouldn't say that Billy. Jack is a once in a generation fighter." "Yeah Dad well so is Ernie and quite frankly he needs your guidance more than Jack does at this point of his career." "Let me try Jack now. I want to speak with him first." -------------------- Jack heard the car before he saw it. Down the road came a BMW with two people in the car. The Rankin's had arrived. Jack turned off his phone, as he didn't want any interruptions. -------------------- "I can't get on to Jack; it's going direct to voicemail." "Dad I have the contract here for you. Have a read over it I promise it is very generous and offers some great monetary incentives." "Well son I'll have a read over it. While I'm doing that you can prepare lunch." "Sure Dad I'll fire up the barbeque. Let's go Cathy" With that, Gary started to read the contract. IMG was offering him a very generous contract. Not only would he be getting 10% of the winning purse but also he would be given a very generous annual salary to be 'retained 'as a trainer. There were large incentives also built in for the progress Ernie made up the rankings. The real prize however was that IMG would upgrade Harry's Gym with all the latest equipment and help with operating costs. This was too good to be true. Billy must nearly run IMG for Gary to be offered this contract. This was just unheard of. It was so good that it would be very difficult to say no. Cathy was feeling very sick with worry. Billy was a slick one, if Gary signed that contract the Finnegan family would implode. Cathy needed to speak with Jack. Cathy excused herself and went to the bathroom from there she made a call to Jack's mobile but it went to voicemail. Cathy left a message. "Jack I know I'm the last person you want to hear from but you need to call me now. Your boxing future depends on it!" Cathy then returned to the kitchen and started preparing the salads for lunch. She quietly cried as she felt the last pieces of her heart breaking. -------------------- Bidgee was the first to greet the visitors. The Border Collie was all over the Rankin's. Clearly, the Rankin's were dog people and Bidgee's reaction was a very good sign that the female in Jack's life liked the couple. "Scott, Eve good to meet you both." "The pleasures all ours Jack. Isn't that right Scott." "It sure is. I'm a big fan Jack. You are one hell of a great boxer." "Well enough of this praise. My ego's big enough as it is, come on in." Jack laughed "I love your dog Jack. What's her name?" "It's Bidgee and she sure likes you and Eve." Jack led the couple into the beach cabin and they were suitably impressed. Jack had prepared seafood and salad. Jack opened a bottle of wine and they all made small talk while eating lunch. After lunch was finished Eve asked if Jack would mind if she took Bidgee for a walk along the beach and she thought she'd go for a swim as well. Jack had no problems with that arrangement and showed Eve where she could change. With that done, Jack offered Scott a cold beer and he accepted without hesitation. For some strange reason Jack felt a real strong connection already with Scott and Eve. "That was a mighty fine meal Jack. Eve was suitably impressed and she is hard to please." "Ah it was nothing Scott, my pleasure. You two make a great couple." "Thanks mate I couldn't agree more." "So tell me what's on your mind?" "Look Scott...I won't beat around the bush. I need representation for myself and my Father. My Uncle Matt has been representing me but he has a business to run and quite frankly doesn't have the expertise. The last negotiation was with IMG and it was painful and we were totally out of our element." "Yeah I know how IMG operates Jack. They would screw you over for five cents." "Well I don't know if you saw the Cobb fight on Friday..." "I was actually in the crowd Jack...great fight." "Wow I didn't realise that..." "One of my fighters was on the undercard. He's not a bad prospect." "Well you know that doors should start to open for me now but that also means we have to deal with the likes of IMG." "Not only that Jack, you will also start getting call for all types of things from advertising campaigns to helping out charities." "Exactly Scott...that's why we need you." "Jack I'll be honest. Rankin Management would love to represent you. You are in my opinion a future world champion but I really need to know why you haven't gone with your brother." "That's a fair question Scott. My brother and I are no longer on speaking terms in fact I gave him his crooked nose. I want someone who wants to work with me on my career not someone who thinks he owns my career and wants to squeeze every last cent out of it." "Well that's fair enough Jack. Your answer impresses me. The fact is we are comparatively a very small company but we like to offer quality not quantity. We think of all our clients as family and I'm happy to give you names of some of our clients for you to check on us." "Scott you have been on my radar for quite a while. I have discreetly checked into you via some mutual friends. I know you and Eve run a tight ship and treat all your clients like friends. I must say your management fees seem fair. You don't take more than what appears to be reasonable in return for all your hard work." "Well Jack I know this sounds corny but we really aren't in it just for the money. Eve's cancer scare taught us that there are more important things in life than money and power. We do very well though and make a good living. We just don't believe we should be stripping our clients like the bigger companies. Anyway the tax man does enough damage as it is." "Amen to that brother" "Look Scott the only real stipulation I have is that my Father continues to train me." "Not a problem Jack. We don't like to fix something that isn't broken. We like our clients to have control in that area anyway. We are there for advice, guidance and recommendations but the final decision is yours. Anyway your Father is a fantastic trainer and we can work with him anyway you see fit." "Scott I'd like to sign with you today. Just let me try my Dad again." "Sure Jack I'll just grab my laptop and printer from the car and get working on the contract." Jack went to try Gary again. "The phone is still off the hook. Well I'll have to make the decision by myself." Jack muttered to himself. -------------------- Back in town Gary, Cathy and Billy had just finished lunch. Cathy excused herself to go visit her mother she could not bear to look at Billy any longer. With Cathy gone, Billy pounced. "Well Dad what's the decision." "Son before I sign I want to talk about Jack." "Ok...what about Jack." "You're not trying to screw him over are you?" "No Dad...I admit I was probably over aggressive in my pursuit of Jack but we live and learn." "So there are no problems in still training Jack?" "No Dad, it would be preferable if he came into the IMG family but Peter has assured me that an unrepresented or independent fighter is fine as long as it doesn't clash with IMG's commitments." "Promise me son that this isn't about forcing Jack into a corner." "No Dad this isn't about Jack. It's about you as a trainer and the bonus is Jack will have some real decent Gym competition." "Ok son I accept that." Cathy returned from her visit and had the 'honour' of witnessing Gary sign the contract. 'You beauty' thought Billy. The trap had just shut; Jack was now IMG's. ------------------------- Meanwhile at the cabin Scott said "well here is the contract Jack, read it over and I would advise you to get legal advice." "Call me stupid but I trust you Scott. You are only taking 5% of winning purses, covering training costs and taking a bigger slice of the promotional work which is only fair. I can live with that. Thanks for adding the clause that I can pick my trainer and support staff. I'll sign. Uncle Matt will be relieved as will Dad. Finally someone to take over the management and we can concentrate on boxing." Jack signed the contract and was now officially part of Rankin Management. "Jack I'll have a business plan to you by Friday and with your consent I'll release a media statement tomorrow that you are now represented by Rankin Management." "Sounds good Scott, want another beer?" ----------------- Cathy had returned to the apartment and Billy had gone over to Peter Johns' house with the contract. Cathy made a decision she was done with the Finnegan family but she owed it to Jack to speak with him and warn him. She pulled her phone out and dialled Jack's number. Jack was just seeing Scott and Eve off when his phone rang. The Rankin's decided to head back to the city and get started on the press release. Jack waved goodbye and answered the phone figuring it was his Dad returning his call. "Dad...." "No Jack its Cathy...don't hang up." "What do you want Cathy?" "I need to see you, it's important." "I told you we have nothing to talk about...you made your decision." "This isn't about us Jack! It's about you, your boxing and more importantly your Dad." "What's happening? Is Dad ok?" "Gary is fine but we need to meet. Where are you, I'll come to you." Jack reluctantly gave her the address. Cathy knew the way to the beach house as they had spent many romantic interludes in this very cabin. What was going on? Should he try his Dad again? He decided he'd wait for Cathy and find out what she wanted first. With that thought Jack switched off his phone and waited for Cathy to arrive. The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 02 Author's Note: This is a work of fiction. Please note that the story is based in Australia and is written in Queen's English therefore my American audience will notice subtle differences in wording or phrases. This is the story of a family deeply involved in the world of boxing and how decisions can change the course of many lives. Copyright© 2009 by David Paul Peter Johns was delighted with his number one man Billy Finnegan. Ernie Johnson now had the trainer he wanted and even better Jack Finnegan would be coming onboard in a matter of days. "Billy you've done some fantastic work. Many people would say this was a given because Gary is your father but not me. It was all the harder because he was your Father and the situation with Jack didn't help." "Well Peter IMG is in the big leagues of boxing now. We have Ernie and Dad with Jack soon to follow." Both men laughed and toasted their success each with a tumbler of scotch. -------------------- Gary Finnegan tried Jack's phone again without success. Why had Jack turned off his phone? Gary hoped he had done the right thing and felt he had. This opportunity meant good things for Jack. A competitive Middleweight in Ernie and reconciliation with Billy. Gary Finnegan decided to head over and see Matt and tell him the good news. -------------------- Jack anxiously waited for the arrival of Cathy. He really didn't feel like seeing Cathy in the flesh but the news sounded ominous. She had broken his heart and then shattered it when she started dating Billy. He thought he was starting to get over her and now this. Bidgee heard her first as the dog started barking at the approaching vehicle. Sure enough it was Cathy's red Toyota heading down the driveway. Jack braced himself for the confrontation. Cathy exited her car and Bidgee came bounding up to her. She sure missed Bidgee but Jack even more. Cathy was nervous but steeled herself for the inevitable talk. "Hello Jack" "Cathy" "How are you?" "Look Cathy let's cut the bullshit and small talk. What do you have to say?" "Well can I at least come in?" "Sure follow me." Jack led Cathy into the cabin and offered her a drink. She accepted a beer, Jack stuck with water. "Jack I'm sorry to barge in on you like this but something has happened today." "Ok what happened?" "Billy signed Ernie Johnson to IMG." "Well good for Billy, Ernie is a great fighter." "There's more...much more. Ernie has requested your father to be his trainer and Gary has agreed." "Ok... I guess I can live with that as long as Dad can juggle the both of us fairly." "Jack you don't understand. Billy dazzled your father and he signed a contract with IMG today." "Oh Shit......I can't believe it. Why the hell didn't Dad call me?" "Jack...he tried as did I. Have you checked your phone?" "No I haven't. I had a meeting today and switched it off." "On a Sunday?" "Yeah it was a last minute thing." "Cathy I need to call Dad. Can you excuse me for a minute?" "Sure Jack." -------------------- Gary arrived at Matt and Vera's and was hoping his old friend would be happy with his decision. He knocked on the large oak door and it was promptly answered. "Gary. How are you old buddy?" "Good Matt, How's Vera." "Yeah she's good Gary actually she is visiting her mother at the nursing home. So I'm glad for the company. Come on in" Matt grabbed a couple of beers for both of them and they sat down on the couch. "So Gary great fight on Friday. The boy is getting better and better. He'll go to the top with your guidance. I'm just glad Firepower Sports' will be along for the ride." "Well Matt I've got even better news that will be great for all of us." "Really what is it?" "Guess who the new Trainer is for Ernie Johnson." "Gary not you?" "Yes me my friend." "Holy shit well done, how has Jack taken the news?" "Well mate I haven't been able to get hold of him but he'll adapt. It's great for Jack as he will now be sparring with a boxer on the same level as him." "I see but will you be able to handle the two competing egos?" "It'll take time but it will work. I just can't believe I have the 2 best middleweights in the country. Both are world class." "Gary how did this all happen?" "Bloody Billy lined it up via IMG." "Ok....What's the catch?" "Well I had to sign with IMG." "Shit that can't be good for Jack! You know how he feels about IMG." "Look Matt it's all good I can still train Jack and he can remain independent. Billy knows it's up to Jack if he goes with IMG or manages himself. It's a win win situation for everyone. Hopefully my boys will get their act together and start speaking to each other again." "Gary you need to get hold of Jack now." "Why?" "Trust me just call him before its too late." "Too late for what?" "Just call him." --------------------------------- Jack tried the home phone but only got the answering machine. Jack then tried Gary's mobile but it was engaged. He had just put the phone down when it rang. "Jack" "Dad...I just tried calling you." "Son I've got some news." "I know Dad I heard about Ernie." "You did?" "Yes but please tell me you didn't sign with IMG." "Well yes I did Son but its ok I have assurances that I can still train you as an independent fighter. You don't have to join IMG. Won't it be great having Ernie to spar and train with?" "Dad...we are screwed!" "What do you mean?" "I signed with Rankin Management today." "WHAT! Why the hell would you do that?" "It was for us Dad. How did I know you would sign with Billy? I just wanted to get IMG off our backs and Scott is the most honest agent in Australia" "Oh Christ what are we going to do?" "Dad...knowing Billy there's probably not much we can do." "Look son I'll call Billy and get back to you." Jack knew it was over. The boxing would continue but without his father by his side. Billy was a snake and hell would freeze over before he would let his Dad out of the contract. Jack could possibly get out of his contract but he didn't want to go with IMG. Plus IMG would hound him if he remained independent. For the first time ever Jack felt truly alone. -------------------- "How did it go with your Dad?" Cathy asked "It's over" "What's over?" "The Fighting Finnegan's." "What do you mean?" "I signed with Rankin Management today. Dad is with IMG. Our partnership is over." "Oh God. I'm so sorry." "You better be going back to toast your success with Billy." "You know what Jack...FUCK YOU. I came here to help, all you Finnegan's can go to hell!" With that Cathy stormed out of the cabin and jumped in to her car. She roared off and was soon gone. What the hell was wrong with that woman? She had Billy, had Billy's money, and had Billy's love. What did she want from him? Whatever it was it was too little too late. "Come on Bidgee let's go for a swim" Jack said to his faithful dog. -------------------- Gary made a call to Billy. What had happened? What did they say 'the way to hell is paved with good intentions'? Billy answered after a few rings. "Son..." "Dad speak of the devil. I'm sitting here with Peter toasting our good fortune." "Son...there is a problem." "What's the problem Dad? Let team IMG fix it for you." "It's Jack." "Don't tell me he's upset about Ernie." "No son it's about his training." "Dad...I told you, you can continue to train him as an independent fighter." "Son...Jack just signed with Rankin Management." "WHAT!" "It's a done deal son." "Well tell him to undo it! Fucking Scott Rankin that dirty bastard!" "What happens if he remains with Rankin?" "Dad...you are part of IMG. Rankin Management is our rival and you can't train Jack as now he isn't an independent." "Jesus how did it come to this? What about my contract?" "Dad...its iron clad. You walk and there are major ramifications. Court action for one." "It's over isn't it Billy." "No Dad. Not if Jack can get out of his contract with Rankin." "Son...I've gotta go. I'll speak to you in a few days when we meet with Ernie." Gary knew it was all over. Jack would not sign for IMG even if his life depended on it. God dammit! The Finnegan's had really dug a hole for themselves this time. -------------------- Jack's phone started ringing just as he got back from his swim. He figured it must be his Dad. "Hello" "You son of a bitch!" "Billy...What do you want?" "You signed with Scott Fucking Rankin! You traitorous dog. Get out of the contract and do it now." "Go to hell Billy. I'm with Rankin Management now. " "Yeah well Dad's with IMG. See you on the other side of the ring." The phone went dead. Well that was what Jack had expected. Maybe it was for the best. It would have been difficult for his Dad juggling 2 fighters in the same division. What's done was done. Jack just had to move on. Jack placed a quick call to Scott and informed him of the situation. "Thanks Jack but I received a call from your Brother. I won't go into specifics but he made his feelings clear. Look Jack if you want out of this contract because of your Dad, no hard feelings and consider it torn up." "No thanks Scott. I'm sticking with Rankin Management. I'll need your help in finding a trainer and a place to stay. It wouldn't be appropriate to stay with Dad anymore as knowing Dad; he'll get Ernie to move in so he can monitor his diet." "Look...leave it with me. I have to go away but Eve is making you top priority. We'll call you tomorrow." -------------------- Billy was furious! His best laid plans had evaporated. He felt good giving hell to Rankin over the phone. What a smug bastard. At least he had Ernie and his Dad. Jack was in for one hell of a surprise in the Middleweight division with Ernie Johnson entering the fray. Arriving home the apartment was dark. Where the hell was Cathy? He needed some release. Billy had to smile to himself, how this must piss off Jack with him having Cathy. Wait till he married her then the fireworks would really begin. Billy made himself another drink then another until he passed out on the couch. Billy awoke to the sound of movement and a clicking noise. He stumbled from the couch and made his way to the master bedroom. Cathy was busily packing her suitcases. "What are you doing?" "Packing" "I can see you are packing but why?" "I'm leaving you Billy. I'm going to stay with my Mother." "Why?" "Look Billy we helped each other out at a difficult time. We had some good times but it was never really going to work out." "I love you Cathy." "Well I'm sorry Billy but I don't love you and quite frankly I don't even like you anymore." "What the fuck do you mean by that?" "You've become a power driven asshole, only interested in success and destroying everyone in your way...even your own family." "You bitch! You loved spending my money." "Yes and for that I'm sorry I used you Billy. I gave my heart away a long time ago." "Well you are nothing more than a whore." "Yes I guess I am." "Well you aren't leaving slut." With that Billy grabbed Cathy's bags and placed them back on the floor. "I'm going Billy, with or without the suitcases." Billy had reached his breaking point. Screwed over by his brother and now his lover. He let out a roar and gave Cathy a mighty backhander to her cheek. Cathy collapsed to the floor in shock. Billy hauled her up and dragged her to the bed. He tore off her dress and undergarments then proceeded to rape her. Once it was finished she quickly picked up her clothes and changed. Without interference this time she grabbed her suitcases and left. Cathy was done with the Finnegan's...they could all rot in hell. -------------------- Money and power can change the outcome of most any given situation. Billy had been drinking fairly heavily since the fight with Cathy. Being drunk made the most irrational ideas seem like perfectly good ideas. Billy jumped in his car and decided to win back Cathy. Hell, he was the best negotiator at IMG; he could sell ice to Eskimos. Cathy would be a pushover. The first mistake was trying to drive drunk, weaving along the road at excessive speed will warrant attention. Billy got that attention in the form of a police vehicle. His second mistake was fighting with the police and verbally berating them. The third and final mistake was refusing a breathalyser test. Billy was locked up charged with drink driving and assaulting a police officer. It didn't make the news. Peter Johns knew the right people in the right places and Billy walked with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Money, power and corruption sit well together. -------------------- Jack had an easy drive back to the city. He needed to talk with his Dad and then find a place to rent. He knew the Rankin's were helping but it never hurt to try yourself. Gary wasn't home. There was a note saying that he was out at a meeting and they would talk later. Jack decided to go for a long run. The run felt great and Jack knew he should continue training even though everything was in limbo. Just some running and swimming for a week or so to start off. Jack was just passing the Reilly's house nearing home when he saw Cathy sitting on the steps. He wanted to ignore her but unfortunately, Bidgee wouldn't. Cathy got a scare as she had been in deep thought when suddenly a tongue was licking her face. "Bidgee! Calm down girl." Cathy looked up and saw Jack with a small smile on his face. Dammit she still loved Jack Finnegan but she had betrayed him and nothing would put things right. She started tearing up but used all her willpower to stop them. "Bidgee leave Cathy alone." "It's ok Jack I don't mind." "Cathy look I just wanted to apologise about my comment yesterday. It was mean spirited but I was in shock." "Well you Finnegan's can sure be mean spirited." "Ok...Let's go Bidgee." "Wait ...Jack I'm sorry. It's been a rough few days." "Ok Cath, what's wrong?" "Nothing Jack." "Are you just visiting your mum?" "Sort of...I'm living here again." "What?" "I left Billy and I'm home. Now that's all that needs to be said. Look Jack I've got to go." "Hey Cathy wait just a minute...what happened to your face?" "Nothing Jack I ran into a door. I've gotta go. Bye Bidgee." Interesting Jack thought to himself as he made his way home. Billy must have really screwed up to lose Cathy. However, it was none of his business but he had to admit the bruise looked like it had come from a hand and not a door. Billy didn't hit woman though, that was one thing Jack was sure of. -------------------- Gary had a very productive meeting with IMG. Ernie had attended and Gary had laid out a training plan along with a list of possible fights for his debut in a couple of months. Gary had inquired on whether Ernie would like to live with Gary and Jack. Ernie jumped at the chance and would move in next week. Harry's Gym was being outfitted with new equipment and would be closed for a couple of days. Gary headed off home to speak with Jack. Jack was watching a movie on TV when he heard Gary's car pull in. Well here we go thought Jack. Gary came through the front door and found Jack at the dining room table "Hey Dad. How was the meeting?" "Good Son. Ernie looks like he will be a good worker. We start training next week." "I'm happy for you Dad." "Jack look......" "Dad before you say anything let me say something. I love you Pop and believe me I don't hold any grudges about how things have panned out. It was bound to happen one day, you've made me the boxer I am but it's time to move forward. You always taught me a contract is a contract and it should be honoured." "Son I'm so relieved. If I had my time over again.......but I won't unfortunately." "Dad I just want to let you know that I'll be moving out soon." "How come?" "It'll just be easier. I need to make my own decisions now." "Ok Son I understand. Ernie is moving in next week. I think he'll be disappointed you aren't around but he'll survive." I hope I will survive Gary thought to himself. "Let's fire up the barbeque and cook a couple of steaks. What do you reckon Dad?" "Sounds like a plan Son." -------------------- Scott had wrapped up everything up in a couple of days. Bloody thug footballers he thought to himself. One of his clients had gotten himself into trouble and had been accused of assaulting a prominent Member of Parliament's son. The initial security video footage from the nightclub didn't bode well for the football player. However, one of the patrons of the nightclub had videotaped the fight close up and it showed that the other person had thrown a drink onto the football player and had racially slurred him. All assault claims were dropped with that evidence. The footballer was lucky but it would be an interesting time for the Member of Parliament who was the acting Indigenous Affairs Minister. He would have to explain his son's actions. Thank God for mobile phone cameras Scott thought. As Scott was lined up at the Airport, trying to arrange a flight home his phone rang. "Hello Scott Rankin." "Scott it's me." "Eve how are you baby?" "Scott you won't believe this.........David Angelo just called." "The David Angelo" "Yes he saw the press statement on Jack and wants to talk to you." "Look I'm getting a flight back now to Mayson. Can you call ahead and arrange a convenient time to talk to David." "Will do Scotty. Love you." "Love you too babe." -------------------- Scott made it to the check in counter and was in luck as a plane to Mayson was leaving in 45 minutes. Scott got his seat assignment, boarding pass and checked his luggage in. He had about 20 minutes to kill. Scott grabbed the local paper and sports magazines and by the time, he got to the gate the plane was boarding. Scott found his seat and sat back thankfully there was no one assigned next to him. Scott started to think about David Angelo. It could only be good news for Jack. Scott was smart enough however not to assume anything. He started making a few notes on David Angelo from his own limited knowledge. David Angelo was a very well known American boxing trainer. David had been a very skilled Amateur Boxer who had to retire early due to a bad back injury caused in a motor vehicle accident. David did his initial tutelage under Hall of Fame trainer Liam Derry. David then broke away and worked out of the famous Camden Gym near Florida. David had produced over 20 champions in his time with the only trainer more successful to Scott's knowledge was Emanuel Stewart. David Angelo would be around 58 years old but the strangest thing was that he had quit training boxers over 3 years ago. This was going to be an interesting conversation. -------------------- Billy was putting together the final touches on his proposal to Peter Johns about the recommendations for Ernie Johnson's debut fight. He liked the look of Jason Driscoll who looked tailor made for Ernie. Driscoll was a journeyman boxer and fought indiscriminately. Most of the time he worked as a builder's labourer. Ernie would once and for all end this guy's pitiful career. -------------------- Scott walked in the door around 4pm and as he entered, he got a big hug from Eve. "How did it go Scott?" "Yeah I got our client off but I think this won't be the last time. He really is a Neanderthal. More importantly did you get to speak with David Angelo?" "Maybe" "Baby please don't torture me." "Of course I did Scotty you can ring him 6pm our time." "Ok... want to mess around for a couple of hours then?" The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 02 "Why Mr Rankin, I thought you'd never ask." ---------------------------------------- Jack was feeling pretty drained. Gary was in his study looking at some fight footage of Ernie Johnson and making notes. 'Bugger it' thought Jack "Dad I'm going out." "Ok Son see you later." Jack started walking around the neighbourhood noting nothing much had changed in the last 5 years. The area was much more prosperous but it was still a blue collar neighbourhood. Jack walked up to the high school and it brought back pleasant memories of Cathy. Why was he still pining for this woman? Jack knew he had to let it be. Jack had walked away with his pride intact and didn't want to even contemplate a relationship of any kind with Cathy ever again. 'Let sleeping dogs lie Jack' he quietly said to himself. Jack headed home. -------------------- Scott phoned the international number of David Angelo promptly at 6pm. The phone rang and after 20 seconds, it was picked up. "Hello" "Hello Mr Angelo?" "Yes...you must be Scott Rankin considering that accent of yours." "Yes sir that's me." "Well thanks for calling back Scott. I read you represent Jack Finnegan now." "That's correct Mr Angelo." "Well I heard from good authority you are after a trainer for Jack." "Yes sir that's correct. May I ask how you know this?" "Let's just say a somewhat mutual acquaintance told me. I've followed Jack's career and I think he has the tools to make it to the top. That is provided he has the right people in his corner." "Sir are you saying you want to train Jack?" "Let's just say I'm interested and would like to meet him. I believe I can launch his career here in America." "Sir that's unbelievable. I'm sure Jack would jump at this opportunity." "Well Scott I'd like him to come and base himself out of the Camden Gym. He will be my sole pupil so to speak." "Well Sir let me call Jack and I'll get him to phone you with an answer." "Good to hear, tell Jack I look forward to speaking with him." Scott put the phone down in complete shock. Eve could see something was either terribly right or horribly wrong. Scott came out of his daze and told Eve about the conversation with David Angelo. "Scotty this is...I don't know... this is unreal. What an opportunity." "I know. I better ring Jack." -------------------- Jack had just gone to lie down when his mobile phone started ringing. Against his better judgement, he answered the phone. "Hello" "Jack its Scott" "Hey Scott what's crackin'?" "Mate you won't believe who just phoned me." "Who?" "David Angelo." "The David Angelo?" "If you mean the future Hall of Fame Trainer David Angelo, yes, the very same." "What did he want?" "You Jack." "You're kidding." "I'm not. How fast can you get over here to make a call to David Angelo?" "I'll be there in 20 minutes." -------------------- Jack raced out the door and broke the speed limit getting to the Rankin's house. Jack was quickly ushered inside and the number was dialled. "Hello." "Hello Mr Angelo. It's Jack Finnegan." "Hi Jack thanks for calling. I presume Mr Rankin told you about our conversation." "Yes sir, he told me you might be interested in training me." "Jack I'll be honest. I'm more than interested. You are the guy I want to make my comeback with here in America." "Mr Angelo I'd love to work with you. I'm not a fool so I know I have to make the move to America if I want my shot." "Well son the offer is there for you to start your training out of the Camden Gym in Niven, Florida." "Well Mr Angelo I'll get Scott to go through the details and if he's happy I'll see you in Florida." "Tell Scott to send me through his requirements and we'll do a deal." Jack handed the phone to Scott to talk with David Angelo. Jack sat down and knew that everything was coming up roses. -------------------- Gary heard Jack come home around midnight. He had just finished up in the study and walked out to find Jack stretching out on the couch. "Hey Son, late night for both of us." "Yeah you could say that Dad. Can we talk for a minute?" "Sure Son. What's on your mind?" "Dad I've found a new trainer." "Really that's great. Who is it?" "David Angelo" "You're kidding. The David Angelo?" "Yep that's him." "Son...what an opportunity!" "I know... the thing is Dad, I fly out to Florida on Saturday." "Wow so quick. Soak up everything Jack you're with the best now." "No Pop you're the best. By the way would you take care of Bidgee for me?" "Of course, Bidgee is part of the family. In fact she can come to the gym with me just like in the old days." "Thanks Dad." -------------------- With the arrangements made Jack had a quiet few days. He packed his bags, spent time with Bidgee and avoided Cathy. Jack would be staying with David in Florida above the Gym. The future was looking bright for his boxing career. -------------------- Scott and Eve collected Jack Saturday Morning. Jack hugged his Dad goodbye and told him he would speak to him when he arrived in the US. Jack watched the neighbourhood fade away behind him and was glad Cathy hadn't found out he was leaving. Scott and Eve helped Jack with his luggage and he was put on his flight to America. Scott gave him all the information (nicely compiled in a folder) for his journey. While in America Scott would be keeping in contact and would assist in anyway possible. Jack boarded the plane and found his seat. Soon enough the plane taxied the runway. As the plane left the runway, Jack looked back only briefly. He would miss Australia but his future lay with David Angelo. To Be Continued The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 03 Author's Note: This is a work of fiction. Please note that the story is based in Australia and is written in Queen's English therefore my American audience will notice subtle differences in wording or phrases. This is the story of a family deeply involved in the world of boxing and how decisions can change the course of many lives. Copyright© 2009 by David Paul Two Years later February Madison Square Garden Jack was in the fight of his life. Round 5 was a blur and he felt his left eye closing up. He had knocked the WBC & IBF World Middleweight Champion down in the second round but Ricardo Fermin was a proud champion and he came back in the third, fourth and fifth rounds. "Jack look at me. Stop looking for the knock out. Keep working his body. You're younger, faster and stronger but at the moment he is alot smarter. Stop playing into his hands stick to the game plan." "Will do David, how's the eye?" "Forget the fucking eye Jack. Work the body and aim for his left side!" The bell rang for the sixth round and Jack got up determined to stop Ricardo Fermin. -------------------- Gary Finnegan was watching Jack fight for the WBC &IBF Middleweight Championship at his home in New South Wales. Beside him was Ernie Johnson they were both cheering Jack on. Gary couldn't believe the changes in Jack. He hadn't seen his Son in the flesh for over 2 years. Gary watched all Jack's fights and couldn't believe the difference in Jack's fighting style since leaving Australia. Jack had hit another level. David Angelo was moulding a champion. Jack was in a tough fight. Ricardo Fermin was a great champion and had only lost 2 professional fights and they were at the start of his career. Gary crossed his fingers and mentally wished Jack well as the 6th round began. Jack ducked Ricardo's first punch. He was going for head shots. Jack mentally told himself to stick to the plan. Jack ripped in some hard body shots to Ricardo's left side. He was hurt! Jack thought he had injured Ricardo's ribs obviously David had seen this. Ricardo tried to slow down the fight but Jack relentlessly stalked him. Several more body shots found their mark and Jack knew he could win this fight. The bell rang for the end of the 6th round. -------------------- Billy Finnegan was sitting in a bar drinking with his latest squeeze. Her name was Bridget or Bianca he could never remember when he was drinking. They were both watching the fight. The crowd in the bar were cheering on 'Aussie Jack'. It was enough to make Billy vomit especially when they scanned the crowd at Madison Square Garden and in the front row was Scott& Eve Rankin. That Rankin was a no good rotten snake, it should have been Billy in the front row of the Garden not Scott fucking Rankin! "Gee your brother is boxing well Billy, he might win this." "Really thanks for the update Bridget." "The name's Bianca Billy how many times do I have to tell you." "Whatever just shut up and watch the fight." "You know Billy Finnegan you can be a real prick sometimes." "Yeah so they tell me." -------------------- Jack felt he had shaken loose the cobwebs and he no longer was worrying about the eye. He knew he could win this fight and the titles if he kept it together. "Good work Jack you are wearing this guy down. Just remember he is not a champion for no reason. Stay with the body for this round but if you see an opening at the top take it as he is starting to drop his hands to protect his injured left side." "No worries David." "Damn you Aussies and your 'no worries'. Let's win this thing. We've put 2 years into this campaign. Go for it Jack!" The bell rang for the 7th round and Jack went out to face the champ. Ricardo seemed less aggressive and less eager to mix it up with Jack. Ricardo was moving away everytime Jack went in for a body shot. The champ kept dropping his hands to protect his left and right side. Jack got a few good combinations going but Ricardo Fermin was a proud man and had a body that wouldn't quit. Jack spent most of the round chasing Ricardo. The champ was done and it seemed to be just a matter of time if Jack didn't make a mistake. The bell rang for the end of the 7th round. --------------------------- Cathy Reilly was watching the fight at her mother's house. It had been a rough couple of years for her mum. Cathy's Dad had succumbed to his injuries and passed away in the last year so the Reilly women decided to stick together and share the house. They were both thinking about selling the house and moving into the suburbs. They were both bringing in good incomes and could afford a better house in a better area. They really needed a bigger house as there were 3 of them and Cathy wanted a backyard. Cathy watched the TV screen... Jack was finally fulfilling his dream and Cathy couldn't be prouder. "Mum quick the next round is starting." -------------------------------- Jack could feel everything aligning, this was his night. He quickly looked at the crowd and he focused on the front row where he saw Scott & Eve Rankin and Matt & Vera McEwan. Jack was happy that Matt had come in his Dad's place as his Dad was preparing Ernie for a big fight in Australia. "Jack...are you with me?" "Sorry David...I'm here." "Look Jack the eye is getting worse. We need to finish this fight. Work the body and grab your opportunity." "Ok David...let's do this." The bell rang for the 8th round. Jack got up and attacked his opponent from the start. He was going to be Champion! Ricardo Fermin had his time it was now Jack's turn. Jack unloaded a brutal combination on the Champs body. Ricardo Fermin staggered and tried to retreat but Jack followed. Jack kept hammering away at the body and then it happened. Ricardo Fermin dropped his hands to protect his body. Jack unleashed a wild right that hit Ricardo Fermin directly on the temple. The punch rocked him to his core and he fell to the canvas. The crowd went wild when Jack retreated to a neutral corner. The referee slowly counted Ricardo Fermin out. Jack had done it! The ring was chaos as Jack's support team led by David Angelo came running into the ring and tried to pick him up. However, Jack quickly went to check on Ricardo Fermin to find he was conscious and sitting in his corner. Jack thanked him and gave him a quick hug. A few kind words were said and next minute Jack was being interviewed by Larry Merchant. Jack said all the right things praising his opponent and then Jack's own support staff. Jack gave special thanks to David Angelo, Scott & Eve Rankin, Matt & Vera McEwan and lastly but certainly not least his Dad Gary. Jack finished the interview saying "We did it Dad...we did it!" -------------------- Gary Finnegan had a tear in his eye. He had never been more proud. His son was now Middleweight Champion of the world. -------------------- Billy Finnegan had never been more angry plus he just lost a bundle on the fight. He thought for sure that Ricardo Fermin's ring experience and superior height advantage would defeat Jack Finnegan. Jack had screwed him over yet again. -------------------- Jack had finally made it back to the change room. He had 2 belts in his possession the WBC & IBF Middleweight Championship belts to be precise. The support team were screaming and shouting and had opened champagne. Jack thanked everyone again then hit the shower. He knew he would be heading to the hospital to get checked over. The left eye was the only real concern but Jack wasn't worried. Jack was taken straight to the hospital and checked over. Everything was fine...for a guy who had been in a fight that is. The swelling would reduce and the bruises would fade. David then took Jack back to the hotel where a room had been booked for a victory party. Really it was just a small gathering with the support team, David, Matt and Vera and of course Scott and Eve. When they arrived at the hotel all the staff and guests applauded him. Jack found it all quite embarrassing really. They were then shown to the private function room. A big banner was hanging in the room saying 'The Champ is here' and was filled with balloons and streamers. The party was good. They ate, they drank and Jack caught up with Matt & Vera McEwan. Scott & Eve were like surrogate siblings and Eve was hugging and kissing both cheeks. Jack had received a call from his Dad plus Ernie Johnson also spoke to him. Then to make things really surreal he got a call from the Prime Minister of Australia who had watched the fight and wanted to convey his congratulations and tell him how proud Australia was of him. By that time Jack was exhausted so he headed up to his room and fell asleep on the bed holding his newly acquired belts. -------------------- Jack awoke next morning very sore and feeling like he had run into a freight train but he was happy. Jack jumped into the shower and had a long and refreshing one. He then jumped into the spa where the jets helped his aching body. He was meeting David and Scott for breakfast as a few decisions had to be made. Breakfast was delicious and Jack was impressed with the buffet presented. David and Scott made small talk until breakfast was finished. "What now Champ?" "What do you mean Scott?" "Do you have any idea what you want to do for the next couple of months?" "Well Scott I think we all need a break." "Couldn't agree more Jack." David said "I'd like to go back to Australia for a short holiday." "That sounds like a good plan as I'm going back to Florida for some rest. We'll start training again in mid April and line up our first defence of the WBC title." "Scotty...can you book me a flight back with you and Eve?" "Consider it done Champ." "Well then it's settled. Now I just want to go up and see Matt and Vera before they leave for Hawaii." "Ok mate see you at lunch." -------------------- For a surprise Scott had booked the 3 of them into first class for the trip back to Australia. Jack was overjoyed as he could use the extra space at the moment. He needed to stretch out as he was still sore. The plane took off but Jack couldn't sleep. He was still a bit disturbed about the message received on his phone. It was from Cathy Reilly congratulating him on winning the fight. He had tried to forget Cathy but failed miserably. Jack briefly reflected on the fact that he had been away from home for nearly 2 years. David Angelo had delivered what he had promised that first day in Camden Gym. "Listen to me Jack Finnegan and I will make you a Champion. However it's my way or the highway. You are going to work harder than ever before." David hadn't lied. He punished Jack. Jack had thought he was fit but he wasn't. David Angelo soon took care of that. Everything was monitored including training, diet, even free time. There was no drinking ever and no women leading up to a fight. Jack had done alright on the women front. The ladies found his Australian accent sexy and he bedded many a young beauty. He missed having the occasional beer but understood why. The opponents he faced were a class above of what he had experienced in Australia. David carefully hand picked his first 6 fights and each opponent taught Jack something new. As his fitness and skill base improved Jack fought tougher opponents and many fights went the distance. It was a good lesson as in Australia Jack hadn't advanced much past 5 rounds except for the Cobb fight as he was normally knocking out his opponents in the early rounds. In the first 12 months of his stay in America Jack was in the top ten on the WBC & IBF rankings. Boxing is a very political sport and many fights were scheduled and then delayed for one reason or another. It was a frustrating period for Jack but David kept him busy with different types of opponents and Jack was becoming a better fighter for it. Slowly but surely the bigger fights presented themselves. Jack was making a name for himself and having David Angelo as his trainer gave him a media presence. He fought all the great fighters and they all fell before him. Jack suddenly found he had a reputation as a giant killer. He had beaten classy fighters like Denys Oleksander, Reece Maxen, Dan Sweeney, Herman Meino and Patrick Hugo. Jack Finnegan finally found himself as the number one contender in the WBC & IBF rankings. Only one obstacle remained and that was Ricardo Fermin, pound for pound one of the best fighters in the world. David Angelo was convinced Jack had the tools to upset the Champion. Scott and Eve Rankin had been regularly coming to America and were very close to Jack. Scott Rankin negotiated the deal and everything was set for a New York February fight at MSG. The fight was billed as 'Clash of the Titans'. The build up to the fight was long and relatively civil as both fighters respected each other. Jack wondered to himself how his Dad was going since he had only heard snippets of news. Jack knew Ernie Johnson was about to make his launch as a serious contender on the world stage. Ernie was ranked at number 15 on the WBC Rankings, Number 13 on the IBF Rankings and was in the top ten in the WBO rankings. Jack had a feeling that somewhere down the track they would meet in the ring...maybe. With those thoughts Jack drifted off to sleep. -------------------- The plane landed in Sydney and Jack departed with Scott and Eve to go through customs. Jack wasn't prepared for the media storm that he walked into. He was mobbed by fans, television cameras and microphones. Questions were coming at him left and right. Australia was a fiercely proud sporting nation and loved their sporting heroes so it was no surprise to Scott or Eve Rankin. Jack was escorted to a room in the Airport to conduct media interviews with Scott and Eve by his side. -------------------- Billy Finnegan was on the phone talking to a client when Peter Johns walked into his office. Billy quickly finished his call and turned around to his boss. "Come with me Billy, you've got to see this." Billy made his way to the conference room where on the large screen was Jack Finnegan with his 2 world title belts prominently displayed in front of him. Billy scowled and heard Jack say "....as I said before... yes I would definitely like to fight more in Australia and perhaps bring a title defence here.." Peter turned to Billy with a grin. "This is it Billy. Think what a money maker Jack Finnegan vs. Ernie Johnson in Sydney Australia would be. Just think of the revenue that would be generated...for us." "Peter there's no way that prick Rankin will deal with us nor my bloody brother for that fact." "Wrong Billy. We use the media and put pressure on them until they do the deal. Remember the Mundine vs Green fight that was all due to public pressure. Finnegan is a world champion and Ernie is the best fighter in Australia. It's a match made in heaven." "But the WBC & IBF surely won't agree." "Have you seen the latest rankings?" "Not yet Peter." "Well Ernie is now ranked number 10 by the WBC and number 8 by the IBF and the WBO have him at number 4. Jesus Billy what's wrong with you, you should be on top of this!" "Sorry Peter. I've been preoccupied with the Rugby Union guys. News Limited is making life difficult." "No excuse Billy. Go see your father and Ernie today and plant the seed. We need to strike while the iron's hot" -------------------- Finally the news conference was over. Jack grabbed his bags and made his way to Scott's SUV. Jack would spend the night with Scott and Eve and then head over the next day to visit his Dad. Jack left a message letting Gary know he was home and he would see him the next day. Jack slid back in the seat and went to sleep. -------------------- Sweat was pouring off Ernie Johnson. "Faster Ernie Faster" Gary was shouting. Ernie was hitting the bag with everything he had. "Time" Gary shouted. "Good work Ernie. Great session. Ruben Jackson won't know what hit him. Go and have a shower." "Will do boss." Ernie was a great kid Gary thought to himself. Gary firmly believed the young man could get to the top and at 20 was maturing nicely as a fighter. Gary looked around the Gym .If Harry Weaver was alive today he wouldn't even recognise it. The Gym had been expanded and had every known piece of equipment required had been purchased by IMG but they expected a return for their investment and quickly. Gary wished he had never signed with IMG as they were ruthless and didn't care about their clients at all. On the other side of the coin however was that he wouldn't have met Ernie without them. Ernie was like a son to Gary which was more than he could say about Billy. Gary didn't even recognise who Billy was, he barked orders like a drill instructor and Gary clashed constantly with him. IMG wanted to push Ernie into big fights against opponents he wasn't ready for and Gary refused to do it, suffice to say Gary never got his 'incentive bonuses' outlined in the contract. Ernie decided to have a quick spa. Gary was just cleaning up when Billy strode through the door. "Gary we need to talk." "What's this Gary crap...how about hello Dad." "Ok hello Dad we need to talk." "What is it Billy?" "Have you seen the latest rankings?" "Yes I have but I think they flatter Ernie at the moment." "Well we disagree." "Who's we?" "IMG" "You mean Peter fucking Johns don't you." "Show some respect Gary." "Why?.... you pricks don't show me any. Just say what you want to say as I have to get home to cook Ernie dinner." "We are going after Jack." "What?" "Yep Ernie Johnson vs. Jack Finnegan in Australia for the titles." "No way Billy. Ernie isn't ready yet for the step up in class. Did you even watch the Fermin fight?" "Jack was lucky." "Lucky! Jesus Billy you amaze me at every turn! How the hell can you call yourself a sports agent when you know nothing about sports?" "Gary..." "Stop calling me Gary!." "Dad let me remind you, your contract is up in March and if you disagree we'll find a new trainer for Ernie." "Well Billy let me remind you, you're fucking with the wrong bloke. Now get out of my sight and tell that prick Peter Johns he can go to hell. I choose the fights for my fighter not IMG!" "Read your contract Dad. See you later.....maybe." "Hey Billy!" Billy turned around and saw Ernie standing there looking angry. "Oh Ernie....I didn't know you were still here. How's it going Champ?" "Don't ever threaten my trainer again. Just don't forget if Gary goes I go. Remember we are in the middle of contract extension talks." "Ernie this was nothing but just a bit of father/son tension." "Just leave Billy." Gary said Billy quickly left cursing his bad luck that Ernie had been present. -------------------- Gary Finnegan was furious. That son of a bitch Peter Johns and IMG. Who the hell was that man who had once been his son? Gary felt a tightening in his chest and shots of pain in his left arm. "Oh shit Ernie......." was the last thing Gary said before he collapsed on the floor. -------------------------------- Jack had just sat down for dinner when his phone rang. Jack decided to ignore it and have his dinner thinking it could wait. The conversation at the dinner table was pleasant and everyone was in good spirits. After dinner Jack tried phoning his Dad but only got the answering machine. He left a message, telling his Dad that he would see him tomorrow. Jack thought he better check his messages on the phone. There were several from media outlets requesting interviews but the last one was totally unexpected from Ernie Johnson. It sounded like he was on the verge of breaking down and asked Jack to call him immediately. The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 03 Jack hurriedly dialed the phone number. "Jack is that you?" "Hi Ernie...it's me. Are you ok?" "Jack you have to get to the hospital now! You're Dad has had a massive heart attack and they don't know if he will survive." Jack dropped the phone and raced out of the house past a startled Scott and Eve. He grabbed Scott's car keys and raced towards the hospital. "Hang on Dad...I'm coming." Jack said to himself -------------------- Billy was talking to Peter Johns. It was turning into a long conversation. "Peter I'm telling you we have to get Ernie signed and then get rid of my old man as his trainer." "Christ Billy...you are one cold bastard... that's what I like about you." "Well we need this fight and I'd like nothing more than for Ernie to wipe the floor with that smug bastard. He's just a paper champion. Have a read of this list I've quickly put together on available trainers." "Impressive Billy. I'll read over it later tonight." "Well we'll speak tomorrow then. I'm taking Bianca out for dinner, but she's starting to wear me out with her incessant talking. Thank Christ she's good in the sack." Peter Johns just laughed. Billy Finnegan was indeed the coldest bastard he'd ever met but he sure did produce the results for IMG. If this was the way he treated his family I'd hate to be his enemy. Those were Peter's last thoughts as Billy left for the day. -------------------------------- Jack rushed through the emergency doors of the hospital and was directed to the nurse's station. Jack spotted Ernie in the waiting room and rushed over to speak with him. Although they hadn't met in person before they had talked numerous times over the phone and got on well. "Ernie, what's happening?" "Jack ...I don't know they haven't told me anything. I think Gary had a heart attack but I'm not sure. They promised me that the Doctor would come out soon" "I can't believe this is happening. Were there any signs?" "Well to be honest Jack he has been under a lot of stress for a long time." "What do you mean?" "Well I don't know if it's my place to say but Billy has caused your Dad a lot of professional, personal and financial problems. There has been many a surprise or two in the last couple of years. To be honest Jack I don't think much of your brother but that's just my opinion" "Billy.....Dammit I should have known. Where the hell is that Doctor?" "Look Jack I'll go and see if I can find out where he is." "Thanks Ernie. I have to make a few calls." Ernie left to find the Doctor. Jack phoned Scott and apologised for taking the car but he explained the situation. Jack could hear Eve in the background telling Scott she was getting her car out of the garage and to tell Jack they would be getting to the hospital pronto. Jack wondered if he should call Matt & Vera but they were overseas so he thought he'd wait until he knew more. Jack decided to hold off calling Billy, not that he'd care Jack thought bitterly. Ernie came back followed by a Doctor in his white coat. "Jack this is Doctor McCarthy," "Hi Jack... nice to meet you. I'm looking after your Father." "Hello Doctor McCarthy. Please tell me what is happening?" "In simple terms Jack your father has had a heart attack and we had to put him into a medically induced coma." "Why a coma for a heart attack?" "Well we have some concerns as there is swelling on the brain. This could mean potential brain damage but it is too early to tell. It appears the swelling was from the heart attack itself as the brain was deprived of oxygen during the attack." "Will he survive?" "Again it's too early to tell at the moment but your father is on a ventilator and is resting comfortably. We are monitoring him very closely. Look Jack I have to get back so please leave your number with the nurse's station and we will call if there is any change during the night. Otherwise you are welcome to stay in the waiting room." "Thanks Doc." Jack was still in disbelief and had a lot of information to digest. He decided to stay at the hospital for the night. Ernie agreed to stay with him. Scott and Eve soon arrived and as Jack explained the situation they said they would wait as well. However Jack talked them into coming back in the morning and would call them if there was any change. "Ernie are you sure you want to stay because it's the same deal for you. . I can call if there is a change." "No mate...I want to stay. He's my best friend and like a Father to me. I want to be here." "Ok Ernie...and thanks." "I guess I should phone Matt & Vera first, and then Billy I suppose." "Mate I think you might have to call a couple of other people as well." "Who Ernie?" "Lyn and Cathy Reilly." "Why would I do that?" "Jack your Dad was going to let you know tomorrow but considering the circumstances I better tell you." "Tell me what Ernie?" "Jack your Dad has a very special relationship with the Reilly family. A lot has changed in the time you've been away." "Well I know Lyn worked for Dad and they've been family friends since I was a kid." "Yeah well it's more than that now Jack." "Ok lay it on me Ernie." "Well for starters Lyn and your Dad are going out and are extremely close. I think its love mate." "Shit why didn't he tell me?" "I think it was going to be a surprise but there's more." "He's real close with Cathy as well." "Why...because of Lyn?" "No mate because of his grandson." "Grandson? Oh fuck...it's Billy's kid isn't it?" "Yeah but Billy won't have anything to do with him and just pays his child support. There are some issues there I guess but that's what I meant by Billy being a real thorn in your Dad's side." "That son of a bitch... Why didn't anyone tell me I had a nephew?" "Mate I think your Dad wanted you to just focus on your boxing but you'll have to ask him why." "Gee Ernie what a mess. Well I'll make the calls. Thanks for the information." -------------------- Jack phoned Matt & Vera McEwan's hotel in Hawaii and left a message to call him as soon as they could. Jack then had the unpleasant task of phoning Billy it went straight to voicemail. Jack calmly said he should get to the hospital immediately as his Dad had a heart attack. Next he phoned the Reilly house. He hoped Lyn would pick up and not Cathy. "Hello Reilly residence." "Lyn its Jack Finnegan." "Oh Jack how are you darling. We watched the fight; well done love...we are all so proud of you." "Lyn I'm sorry to call like this but I'm at the hospital." "Are you ok?" "It's not me...its Dad." "Gary....what's wrong with Gary?" "Lyn...he had a heart attack plus there is swelling on the brain and the doctors put him in a coma." Jack heard an almighty screech and sounds of sobbing as the phone hit the ground. The phone was picked up. "Hello this is Cathy Reilly. Who is this?" "Cathy its Jack Finnegan." "Jack? Why is mum crying?" "Cathy...Dad's had heart attack, there is swelling on the brain and he's in a coma." "Oh God no. We will be right up I just have to arrange a sitter..." "No bring him with you. I'd like to meet my nephew." "You know?" "Ernie just told me." "Ok...we'll be there in 20 minutes." -------------------- Jack returned to the waiting room. Ernie and Jack killed a bit of time talking boxing and Jack was impressed with Ernie's knowledge and love of the sport. Jack was just getting a coffee from the machine and turned to find Cathy only metres away. Cathy was more beautiful then he could remember. Standing but wobbling next to Cathy was an adorable little boy no more than 2 years old. Lyn was being comforted by Ernie. Jack came back into the waiting room and Lyn looked up and rushed into his arms. "Oh Jack it's so good to see you. Promise me Gary will be okay." Jack said all the right things and told her everything Doctor McCarthy had said. Lyn then sat back next to Ernie. Jack knew this would be an awkward moment but he turned and faced Cathy. "Hello Cathy." "Hi Jack." "You look good." "Thanks...so do you." "Well are you going to introduce me?" "Jack this is Richard Jack Finnegan your nephew. We call him RJ." The little boy held out his hands and Jack picked him up. Up close there was no doubt he was from Finnegan stock. Jack hugged him and the little boy hugged him back. Jack fell in love with RJ the minute he picked him up. "Cathy he's beautiful." "I know Jack...I know." Jack cuddled little RJ and they both fell asleep in the waiting room. Cathy watched them with her heart breaking; the man she loved holding her child. It was almost too much to bear. -------------------- Around 2am that morning everyone decided to head home. Doctor McCarthy had reported no change and insisted the hospital would call if there were any problems. Jack decided to stay with Ernie at his childhood home. They all left together in Cathy's car as Scott had taken his SUV home with him. Jack was really disgusted with Billy as not even a phone call to the hospital was made to check on his own Father. Even Matt had frantically called from Hawaii every few hours to check on Gary's condition. Matt & Vera were getting the first plane home and cutting their vacation short. Jack figured Billy's time to pay the piper was coming. -------------------------------- Billy was drinking heavily as usual. The date with Bianca hadn't gone well. Who cares if he called her Bridget a few times? Well she did and had stormed out of the restaurant and left in a Taxi. Billy had paid the bill and then went to his favourite bar not far from his apartment. His mobile phone had rang a few times so he just shut it off, work could wait. He decided he would have one more drink and then head home to face an angry girlfriend. -------------------------------- Jack roused early but had never really slept. He phoned the hospital and was told his Dad was still in a stable condition. He had some breakfast and it was only just 6am. Still too early to go to the hospital Jack figured. Jack scribbled a message telling Ernie he had gone for a walk. Jack then headed out to look around the old neighbourhood. The neighbourhood had changed in the last couple of years. The streets seemed cleaner and by the look of front yards and the toys left on the lawns a lot of young families had started moving in. Jack found himself out the front of Harry's Gym. Jack didn't even recognise the place, it was much bigger, not the Gym he remembered pounding those bags all those years. Things change, that's just the nature of life Jack figured. He started walking back and decided to go by the Reilly house just to look. Jack found himself standing outside the Reilly house. At least not everything had changed although the place needed to be repainted and the guttering needed repair. Jack heard movement inside and thought it best to move on. He was just a little too late and he heard the door open as he turned to walk away. "Jack?" "Good Morning Cathy. What are you doing up this early?" "Well I have a 2 year old but the truth is I haven't been able to sleep." "True....stupid question eh" "Jack come inside." "Ok...I guess I can." Jack entered the Reilly house for the first time in years. There were some new furnishings and of course children's toys but it was still as he remembered it. Cathy offered Jack some coffee but he opted for tea instead. "What time are you going up to the hospital Jack?" "Probably around 10am." "Can we go together?" "Sure as long as you bring RJ along." "Of course, Mum as well." "Cathy look I know this isn't the best time but can you tell me about RJ?" "What can I say Jack he's my life." "No Cathy I mean what happened with Billy and everything." "Jack I don't know if I can really tell you it may bring up some painful memories.....for both of us." "Please Cathy I need to know." "Ok Jack ok. Where to begin? I guess from the time of your Mum's death we were drifting apart and you were acting very aloof and withdrawn..." "Yeah I sure acted the fool didn't I?" "Well that's the past Jack. Anyway Billy seemed to be the only one offering me any support. That day you left for your run. Billy came around to see your Dad but Gary was sleeping. I had being crying and I thought Billy was my friend so I opened up to him and told him about the way you were acting. He said all the right things even going as far as saying that he would never treat me like that and in fact said he had loved me for a very long time. I was shocked and Billy took this as an opportunity and started kissing me very passionately. Then you walked in and everything ended. I tried for weeks to get you to talk to me but you refused. I felt betrayed and angry. Billy was pursuing me relentlessly and you wanted nothing to do with me. Being a foolish girl I succumbed to Billy's advances and became his girlfriend..." "Why Cathy?" "Please Jack I'm getting to that. In my mind I thought if I could make you jealous you would come back to me. Who better to do it with than Billy, your own brother? So it went on but you never came back to me. I knew the night of the Cobb fight that things couldn't get any worse. I was just an object to Billy just like his sports car. He made me go to the fight and I know it was to put you off. I was so proud of you that night but I knew I couldn't keep the charade up any longer. I was beginning to really hate Billy and I knew I had lost the respect of your Father. He didn't say it but I know he thought of me as a home wrecker. When all the business with IMG signing Ernie and your Dad happened I knew I was done with the Finnegan family but I felt I owed it to you to tell you what was happening. I went to you and you had signed with Scott Rankin and I saw the anger in your eyes, we fought and I left. I went back to Billy's apartment and packed my clothes and arranged to live with Mum as Dad was in a nursing home by then. Jack this is the hardest part of the story, please give me a minute...." Cathy got up and went to the bathroom. Jack was stunned at the turn of events. What a fool he had been. Why didn't he trust Cathy? He knew Billy was a snake with no morals. Before Jack could silently beat himself up any more Cathy returned with her eyes red from crying. "As I said before Jack this is the hardest part to tell. I had my bags packed and Billy came home I told him I was leaving him and that I never loved him as I had given my heart away long ago. Billy told me he loved me and grabbed my bags; he then struck me on the face and raped me.....' "He WHAT! Raped you!! I'll kill that son of a bitch." "Jack please calm down let me finish the story. I don't need Mum or RJ waking up." "Sorry Cathy go on." "Well we caught up in the neighbourhood that day and I told you I had run into a door. I was still in shock. I didn't see you again and then found out you had gone to America. I was so angry with you but then I reflected on the situation and knew it was for the best. You needed to be free to pursue your dream. Soon after I found out I was pregnant. Mum supported me all the way. I knew the father was Billy so I told him. He went ballistic saying I was a whore and it could have been anyone's, he said the baby was probably yours. Around the same time my Dad passed away so it was a very traumatic time. The only bright spot was your Dad he was around all the time supporting Mum and me. Ernie became a friend as well. Well it didn't take long for your Dad to figure out I was pregnant he talked to me one night and asked if it was his grandchild I was carrying. I told him the truth, that Billy was the father. I don't know what happened but Ernie told me that your Dad and Billy had a blazing argument over me and the baby. Things then soured badly and Billy made your Dad's life unbearable. After I had RJ and got home from the hospital Billy visited. He dumped some papers on me. The papers were to relinquish his parental right to RJ and it came with a cheque. I signed the papers not for the money but because I never wanted to see Billy again. Up to this point I have never heard from Billy but I ensured that RJ kept the Finnegan name. In the past year love has blossomed between my Mum and your Dad, and Gary is a doting Grandfather. I knew privately it was hurting him badly about Billy and I have to admit he has seemed to have aged badly in the last year. He is always talking about you and Ernie and is proud of you both. Gary never talks about Billy but told Mum he was thinking about getting out of training and retiring. He is only sticking at it for Ernie's sake and to keep IMG at bay." "My God Cathy I can't believe things got that bad. I feel like I abandoned my family and look what's happened. The Championship means nothing without family" "No Jack please don't blame yourself. You've kept us all going, we are so proud of you. You have inspired everyone around you. You know that you are Ernie's hero don't you? To be honest you're mine too." "Cathy...this is hard to say but I've had two years to think about it. I missed you everyday over in America. I still love you with all my heart." "Jack please don't say it if you don't mean it I couldn't take it." "Cathy...I mean it I love you." "I've always loved you Jack." Jack and Cathy looked at each other and passionately embraced and started kissing each other. They only stopped when they heard sniffing. It was Lyn. "Oh I'm so happy. It's good to see you two kids back together." -------------------- Jack had to leave and wake Ernie up. They all then met at the Reilly house and left for the hospital. Jack spoke with Dr McCarthy again but there was no change to report but they could go in and see Gary. It was a humbling sight for Jack seeing his Dad unconscious and hooked up to machines. Lyn was openly crying and Ernie was comforting her with tears in his eyes as well. Cathy and RJ hugged Jack. The group was soon joined by Scott and Eve Rankin. Everyone was there for Gary and just hoped he would pull through. -------------------- Billy Finnegan woke up in an empty bed with a hangover. Where was Bianca? He wanted breakfast. Oh well, he'd grab something near the office. Billy had a shower and shave then put on his suit. He stopped as he always did at the hallway mirror muttering 'looking good killer'. As he made his way to the car he turned his phone on and saw he had messages waiting. He checked them. Billy got the shock of his life as he heard Jack's voice telling him to get to the hospital as his Dad had a heart attack. Billy quickly rang the hospital and was informed his Dad was in a stable condition. They even put him through to Doctor McCarthy who explained the situation. It sounded like his Dad would be ok so he pondered whether to go to the hospital or the office? -------------------- Matt & Vera McEwan arrived at the hospital looking exhausted. Jack went through what happened, explained the situation and introduced Matt to Doctor McCarthy as his Dad's 'brother'. After discussion it was decided that they would all take shifts at the hospital staying with Gary. Jack, Ernie and Cathy would take the first one that day. Matt, Vera and Lyn would take the other. RJ would be shuffled between Lyn and Cathy. -------------------- Billy arrived at IMG and went straight to Peter John's office. His Dad was ok so it was pointless going to the hospital he reasoned. Billy strode into the office as he had a plan hatching already. "Peter...got some news." "Well good morning to you to Billy. Coffee?" "No I'm good." "What's the news then?" "Gary Finnegan had a heart attack." "Your Dad had a heart attack! Is he okay?" The Fighting Finnegan's Ch. 03 "Yeah I spoke with the Doctor. He should pull through." "What the hell are you doing here...go to the hospital." "Why?" "Well he's your Dad." "I know that Peter. I'm sending some flowers and I'll visit tonight some time." "Ok IMG will send flowers as well. I'll get Marsha to organise that." "This will work out great for IMG Peter." "What do you mean Billy?" "I know his contract back to front. We can immediately terminate his contract with IMG." "On what grounds Billy?" "Medical grounds. Regardless of the outcome Dad will be out for action for a long time if not permanently. The contract stipulates that he has to be available at all times for IMG promotions, functions and of course the training of Ernie. He can't now so he has technically breeched the contract." "Christ Billy...that's too cold even for me. The man is fighting for his life and you are going to sack him? But it's your client and your contract but let me warn you, your actions may have consequences. I don't want to lose Ernie Johnson over this feud." "Peter...you worry too much. Marsha is typing up the termination letter now and he will get a nice fat cheque as severance pay. I'll send the letter and cheque today so he's officially finished with IMG as of now. All I need to do is call Ernie in get him to sign a new extended contract with IMG as his current contract expires after the Jackson fight. Once that's done we are back in control. Everyone will be too worried about Dad to interfere, it can't fail." "Alright Billy but this better not blow up in your face." -------------------- Jack was still looking for any signs of improvement but he saw nothing. Matt, Vera, Lyn and RJ turned up to relieve Jack, Ernie and Cathy. Cathy took RJ and Jack updated everyone on the latest information. They would be back at 9am the next morning so they headed home to rest up. They all decided to stay at Gary's house in case the hospital called. Jack set Cathy and RJ up in his Dad's room where he would join them later. First Ernie asked to speak with Jack. "How can I help Ernie?" "Jack...I know this is a lousy time but I need some advice." "Sure Ernie tell me the problem." "Jack I don't want to sound shallow but I have a fight in 5 weeks against Reuben Jackson in Sydney and I don't know what to do." "Are you ready?" "Not without Gary I'm not." "Well postpone the fight." "Jack...I don't think I can. With Gary ill IMG will take control since Gary has always dealt with them .To make things worse I've been ordered in tomorrow afternoon with Billy as we were in the middle of contract negotiations." "When does your contract finish with IMG?" "About the same time as the Jackson fight." "Are you going to sign with IMG?" "Well that's the thing Jack. I was only going to sign if Gary was remaining with IMG. Now it's up in the air. I don't know what to do." "Gee it's a tough one Ernie. I'm probably not the best person to ask for advice as you know I don't like IMG." "I know that but you know boxing." "I suggest you buy some time Ernie." "What?" "Call Billy and tell him you need some time due to Dad's condition. You will meet with him at the end of the week to discuss the fight and the new contract. Hopefully we'll know Dad's condition by then." "Thanks Jack! That should work. I'll call Billy now." As Ernie left to call Billy Jack was feeling drained. But on the bright side he had a loving women waiting for him and a darling little boy. Jack went to bed. -------------------- Billy was pissed off. Ernie Johnson had just called and postponed the meeting until the end of the week. He was put out but felt that once he had Ernie sign the contract he was all Billy's. Billy jumped into his car and headed for his favourite bar thinking he'd then go to the hospital afterwards. -------------------- Jack woke up due to knocking at the bedroom door. It was 8:15am. He had a pretty good sleep and it definitely had a lot to do with the fact that he had his arms around the woman he loved all night. Jack got out of bed, quietly opened the bedroom door and stepped into the hall. "Ernie is everything ok?" "Yeah Jack but a courier delivered a package from IMG this morning addressed to your Dad." "Have you opened it?" "No. Should I?" "Probably. It might have something to do with the Jackson fight. I'll come down with you." Both men headed down stairs. It was really just a large thin envelope. Jack tore it open and started reading the contents. "That piece of shit." "Jack what's wrong?" "They terminated his contract Ernie! IMG terminated his contract!" "Based on what?" "Based on medical grounds." "They can't do that. No one knows what's happening yet" "Well they did and have provided a severance cheque." "Those sons of bitches. I'm ringing Billy right now and tell him where he can shove his new contract." "Hold up there Ernie. I don't want you screwing up your career. You and Dad worked too hard. You need advice. I'm going to call Scott Rankin and I'm sure he'll come over and speak with you." "Thanks Jack. You're just like your Dad always looking out for my best interests." Jack made the call and Scott promised he would be over in the next hour to talk with Ernie. By that time Cathy was up, had bathed RJ and started breakfast. They all ate then Jack, Cathy and RJ left for the hospital. Ernie remained at home waiting for Scott. -------------------- At the hospital Lyn was at Gary's bedside and Matt and Vera had gone to the cafeteria to get breakfast. Lyn smiled when she saw them and lit up when RJ came running towards her. Lyn scooped him up and gave him a hug. "You look happy Lyn." "Yeah what gives Mum?" "You just missed Doctor McCarthy. He thinks Gary is going to make it and they will be taking Gary out of the induced coma tomorrow. Isn't that wonderful!" "It sure is" said Cathy and Jack in unison Matt and Vera arrived back at the room with breakfast for Lyn. Matt motioned Jack outside so he left everyone else talking. "Jack did you hear the good news?" "Yeah it sounds promising." "I guess Lyn didn't talk to you about the visitor last night." "No who was it?" "It was Billy." "How did it go?" "Not well Jack. He was drunk and started saying some nasty things to Lyn. He then progressed on to you and Cathy." "He had Lyn in tears and I had to physically remove him with the help of security. He was told not to come back." "It figures... I don't know how he sleeps at night. We received a package this morning he terminated Dad's contract." "That fucking bastard!" "Exactly." "Don't worry Uncle Matt. Billy will pay." ------------------- Ernie was pleased with the way the meeting was progressing. Scott was very upfront and offered some sound advice. Considering that Ernie knew what to do. "Scott I want to sign a contract with Rankin Management and I want to postpone the Jackson fight." "Ernie you should get legal advice first." "No Scott. I've seen what you did for Jack's career and my only stipulation is that Gary continues to be my trainer if he recovers." "Ok Ernie it can be done but it will have to be post-dated until your IMG contract officially finishes." "Let's do it Scott. Once I sign I'll call IMG myself." -------------------- Billy was just finishing up a meeting when he was called into Peter Johns' office. "Hey Peter, Marsha said you needed to see me." "Sit down Billy." "Ok what's wrong?" "I warned you Billy that some actions have greater consequences than others." "What do you mean?" "Ernie Johnson just phoned me." "Well you know I am meeting with Ernie at the end of the week." "Not anymore." "Don't tell me he postponed again." "No he didn't fucking postpone again Billy. He rang to inform me that he had just signed a contract with Rankin Management." "Not again! Bloody Scott Rankin!" "No not Scott Rankin... you Billy." "What do you mean me?" "It seems that a package was received this morning with a termination letter for Gary Finnegan. Ernie said he couldn't be represented by such a cold blooded company. He has asked us to postpone the upcoming fight with Jackson and if we won't he'll refuse to fight." "Jesus Christ I'll speak to him." "Talk is over Billy he has already signed the contract with Rankin. IMG has just lost the most promising athlete in our company. I warned you not to carry on this family feud and as I said there are consequences. I've overlooked a lot of things Billy including your heavy drinking for one thing but not this. As of 5pm today you no longer work for IMG." "You piece of crap! I made this company and this is how you reward me? How many times did I land the big fish?" "No Billy. You've made IMG a laughing stock. First you can't land your own brother and now Ernie. No legitimate boxer will ever want to be represented by us. We are finished in the sport of boxing." "You fucking ingrate! I'll destroy you!" Peter calmly turned and picked up his phone. "Marsha call security." Billy saw red, how could his mentor do this to him? He had sacrificed everything for him. Peter Johns didn't expect a physical attack but he got one. By the time security got to Peter Johns' office he was unconscious and lying in a pool of blood. Billy was nowhere to be found. -------------------- Everyone stayed all night at the hospital. Ernie came up with Scott and told Jack the good news about leaving IMG. Jack had better news for Ernie. Earlier that day Jack had called his trainer David Angelo and told him of the situation. David would be organising a visa and coming to Australia to train Jack for his first defence and would be working with Ernie as well until Gary recovered. Ernie was over the moon with the news about Gary and Angelo. It was turning into a great day. -------------------- Jack, Cathy and RJ had headed home to sleep. Jack turned on his phone and it immediately indicated messages waiting. Everyone got settled and he checked the messages one was from a Channel 9 reporter asking Jack if he would like to comment on the arrest of his brother Billy Finnegan. Jack went to the television and turned it on to the news channel. Sure enough it was all there. Billy had been arrested on charges of grievous bodily harm. Jack picked up the phone and called Scott. "Scott did you hear about Billy?" "Yeah I just got a call from a newspaper reporter." "Can you find him a lawyer? He's an asshole but he's unfortunately my Brother." "Leave it with me Jack." "Thanks Scott." -------------------- Apart from Billy the next few days were filled with joy. Gary came out of his coma and was doing well Doctor McCarthy believed he would make a full recovery but he would have to dramatically alter his lifestyle. Gary decided on retirement and Lyn would move in with him at the house when he was out of the hospital. Ernie would remain with them also. David Angelo had organised his visa and would be heading out to Australia for training with the first defence to happen midyear. Ernie Johnson would be joining Jack as David now had 2 fighters to train. Eventually both knew they would have to head to America. Jack then decided to make things official and he asked Cathy to marry him (again). She said yes and they would marry after the first title defence. Jack figured things couldn't get any better until he received a call from Scott Rankin. "Jack its Scott" "Scott how are you." "Ok Mate. Look Billy has refused the lawyer and said and I quote tell Jack to go fuck himself. He's going with a legal aid lawyer." "What a fool, does he know he's looking at 7 years prison time?" "He knows Jack but he did ask to see you." "When? Because I know where." -------------------- So it was on a cool March day that Jack found himself standing outside Ackland Prison. Jack made his way through all the security protocols and found himself waiting on a bench for Billy. Billy Finnegan came out in his grey issued prison overalls and made a beeline for Jack who sat across the screen and table.. Billy hurriedly sat down. This was the first time the Brothers faced each other in years. "Wow the Champ is here." "Ok Billy you've made your point." "No little brother I haven't even started to make my point." "Look Billy I only came here today to convince you to take my offer of a lawyer." "Fuck your lawyer. You think you've won Jacky boy but you haven't" "What is wrong with you Billy? Since when was it a competition?" "It's always been a competition golden boy." "Only to you Billy." "You're a real prick Jack. You started this whole chain of events. All you had to do was sign with me and IMG but no...you knew it all." "Are you still hung up on that? I signed with Scott to get you off my back and because Scott's a good guy." "Scott's a fucking loser. I would have made you a multi millionaire by now." "It's always about the money isn't it Billy. Some things are more important than money." "Like what." "Family for starters." "Family! Look at your family Jacky. A father with one foot in the grave, a gold digger for a new step mummy and let's not forget you marrying a whore with a bastard child." "Christ Billy. Look at yourself. Sitting in jail and still cursing everyone who loved you in spite of your problems." "Go to Hell Jack." "You first Billy. As I said the offer is there for the lawyer." "And as I said fuck your lawyer." "Goodbye Billy." "That's it Jacky go away, you're good at running."
