That's where Lily came in. They shared the same ideals, and genuinely cared about the more important aspects of their jobs, such as public relations and customer safety. The only challenge he would face was getting the board to recognize his insights. It was finally time to make his move, and he stepped into the boardroom boldly. This was his one chance to finally do something admirable. No more reaping unearned benefits from his father's fortune. He believed in this, and with Lily's help, he would do his best to convince them that he was not only right, but not the naive little boy they perceived him to be. Jon would be most formidable, but he had prepared himself for any backlash. If his presentation couldn't show them the inevitable error of their ways, time would surely be his ally. Fourteen executives, all of which included Andrew Sato, his father, and his brother, sat patiently in the circular room, awaiting him. Jace had not expected to see Siu's father at the meeting, but he shook the man's hand out of respect. No doubt there was some transaction, or other business going on between Mr. Sato and his father, which for the moment he knew nothing about. Lily tinkered with the projection equipment, while Jace strode forward. She was expected to stay back there during the meeting. This hadn't been his policy of course. She was perceived as low standing, and consequently remained in the backdrop; nearly invisible and seemingly uncredited. Jace wanted to do something about this, yet where to start was another problem. He would tackle this one another time. There was no need to incur any further wrath upon himself, were they to turn down his ideas. The gentlemen awaited as he made his way to the front of the room, and watched him closely. His audience entirely consisted of men in their mid to late fifties. His newly appointed brother was the youngest of them all. Jace motioned for Lily to turn on the projector, and was finally ready to begin. "Good morning gentlemen." he greeted them. "I apologize for this untimely meeting. I understand that our last conference had taken place only a short while ago, and you are all eager to enjoy the holidays. Yet, something has come to my attention, and I would like to discuss it with all of you. As you well know, our products have been top of the line for the last ten years, and we continue to succeed as one of the top ten manufacturers in our field." The gentlemen, including his father nodded and did not interrupt. However, Jon slightly shifted in his seat, and showed a bit of impatience with his brother. Jace ignored him and continued. "While we are indeed succeeding, there are a few issues that concern me. Namely, our popular brand of feminine hygiene products. Our reports show that a fair amount of complaints have been sent in to our customer service agents, regarding allergies and other discomforts; specifically relating to our sanitary pads and tampons." Jace paused, awaiting some kind of interruption; a cough, or maybe a look of disapproval. This was a group of men, who most likely could not, or did not want to relate to feminine issues. Surprisingly he held their attention, and this urged him to go on. "I assure you that this isn't coming from only a few cases. I estimated that one fifteenth of our consumers are being plagued by these problems, and most of them probably believe that they are merely freak cases, if you'll excuse the term. The numbers might seem irrelevant, but I believe that we can do better. After some extensive research I came upon the cause for all this. A survey indicates that most women believed that our Femme line is produced from 100% cotton. Little do they know of the many fillers, bleaches, additives and chemicals used in production. Moreover, we stand behind the safety of our products, when in actuality, the skin and tissue absorbs all of the additives and synthetics in our line. I feel that it is our first priority to ensure the safety of those we serve." He paused again, and gave his audience some time to whisper among themselves. No doubt they were already aware of these complaints, but it was yet to be seen whether their first priority was their wallets, or the safety of their consumers. Walter Avery was the first to speak. "I don't discount your research, yet these days everything comes with a risk. Don't you agree? We certainly don't force our consumers to buy our brand." "That is true, but don't you think that there's too much of a risk here?" Jace countered. "I don't think ignorance is the best solution. Ms. Chambers and I would like to explain the details of our research, and answer any questions you may have after the presentation." Jace went on to illustrate, with the help of the digital graphs and factual medical studies, the different issues associated with their product line, as well as the improvements he sought to make. TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome was more than a big deal. The infection which resulted from the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, typically manifests in otherwise healthy individuals with high fever, accompanied by low blood pressure, malaise and confusion. The symptoms usually rapidly progress into stupor, comas, and multiple organ failure. The characteristic rash, often seen early in the course of illness, typically resembles a sunburn, and can involve any region of the body, including the lips, mouth, eyes, palms and soles. The disease, although survivable, had caused numerous cases of deaths, and one of the main culprits, was indeed overuse of high absorbency tampons, and the toxins contained therein. Jace's solution was to introduce a more organic fiber, made of 100% cotton to reduce the health hazard. Not only would they be saving their consumers from pain and injury, but also supporting organic farmers in their endeavors. The new line, which he did not yet have a name for, would be well received by the masses in his line of thinking, giving them an advantage over the competition. Jace saw this as a win-win situation for both their company, and their consumers. While he took his time to clarify his goals, and make sure that every detail was known, he also observed the panel. There was minimal stirring, however nothing to make him suspicious of rejection. Since some companies had gone green and were more concerned with the idea of environmentalism, there was no reason why they couldn't be a part of that movement. With gratitude, and after graciously acknowledging Lily's hard work, Jace wrapped up the presentation and asked if there were any questions. This was Jon's moment to finally speak, and so, he did. "I think this idea is redundant, and that father is right." Jon said. "We don't force our customers to buy our brand, and we're certainly not the only ones supplying products which may, or may not cause side effects. This almost sounds like speculation. I say we stick to what has worked in the past." "Just because it has worked in the past, that doesn't mean that it will continue to. You're underestimating the power of those who find fault in our products." Jace retorted. Jon sighed, and went on, "Women love the Femme line because of the versatility and convenience we provide them. They're not concerned with the materials. As long as the majority finds it popular and convenient, they will continue to buy without question. We do list the materials and ingredients in our products. Like every disclaimer, we have taken the steps to make sure that the consumers are aware of every detail. If they choose to ignore it, the fault doesn't lie with us." "You make a point, but I think our newest idea is a more viable solution. Not everyone is going to read the fine print. We know marketing well Jon, and our job is to attract the customer. You must admit that pretty packaging and colors are what draws attention to the eye. Not the fine print." "That's my son. Always the concerned humanitarian." Walter commented with a thin smile. Jace ignored it. Although he might have otherwise taken the statement as a compliment, there had been sarcasm in his father's tone. "So what is your solution?" Jon asked, feigning slight interest. "As I said before, I suggest that we launch a campaign for 100% cotton products, which means absolutely no irritation. We can reinvent the line." "Are you serious?" Jon asked impetuously. "Do you realize how much we would have to invest in this new campaign? Not only that, we would have to increase the prices of these products to make up for lost revenue? We already have a good thing going. What makes you think that people would want to pay more for organic products?" His brother did have a point, but before Jace could answer, Lily interrupted. "With all due respect sir, I might argue that the prices of these products are raised every year, especially the most popular brands." she said, as she joined Jace in the front of the room. "As a marketing strategy we've played upon different aspects which may appeal to women; for example color, sizes, compactness, etcetera. While these strategies have worked, we need to be concerned with the ethics of the products we back. It may be difficult to relate to women's health, given that the board consists only of men, but I think this is an important issue." Jon smirked as she finished, and Jace detested him for it. No doubt he would play upon her argument, and try to embarrass her; one who rarely spoke at these conferences, but was making equal sense to his own points. "Our gender does not imply that we can't relate." Jon responded in a reprimanding tone. "I'm sure that every one of us is attached to a significant female, whether it be our mothers, sisters, wives, and so on. They use our brands without any complaints, and occasion praise us for our part in providing these luxury items." "I wouldn't call sanitary products a luxury." Lily argued. "They are as necessary as diapers, and other hygienic products for infants. Not every woman can afford the prices and still, when they do purchase our products, they're not 100% safe." "Really? And this is the important factor that we're too incompetent to realize?" Jon asked. "I didn't mean to imply incompetency, sir. I am reminded of the high fructose corn-syrup studies. We do not produce foods and beverages, but for many years consumers were fooled into believing that these products were safe for consumption. Public awareness led to changes, and now I'm sure that if any of you go to a supermarket, you will see that food and beverage products now contain both the nutritional information, as well as 'No High Fructose Corn Syrup' labeled on the packages. This is the evolution we should be worried about. People are smart, and will bring light to things not done with integrity." "Integrity?" Jon asked mockingly. "You question my father's integrity?" "N-no sir." she stammered, probably realizing her grave mistake in using those words. "I didn't mean it in such a way. I was simply..." "You were simply making light of my father's accomplishments, as well as those of his colleagues." Jon pressed. "Jonathan that was not our agenda." Jace finally cut in, doing his best to hold back his contempt for his brother. "We both agree that something needs to be done about this. We have a duty to our consumers, and one day we might be facing scrutiny ourselves." His thumb clicked on the manual remote, and immediately a list of the additives used in their products appeared once more on the presentation screen. "Take a look at these one more time. It's plain to see that you're overlooking what could be a huge issue in the future." Jace continued. "Women are becoming sick!" Jonathan snorted impatiently, "There's no need for a pessimistic outlook. We have thrived for years, and we will continue to do so. As I said, it's in our best interest to go with what has worked in the past, and what continues to work now." Walter Avery finally spoke up, before Jace got another chance to retort. "I agree with Jonathan." he said. "Our methods, although questionable by you, have brought in more revenue than we ever imagined possible. I acknowledge your concern, but I think that this matter is being blown out of proportion. What concerns a few will probably dissipate, and not affect our business too much. You've always been the type to look deeply into things, but I don't think you should worry yourself on this one. We will resume everything as planned, and not worry about any new campaigns until next season's launch." The executives, all possibly torn on the issue, looked to Walter for guidance, who left Jace looking like a fool. He was still inclined to argue, but knew better. With Jon's urging, his father had shut his ideas down in one fell swoop. As the founder and president, he had the final word, and his word would be adhered to. The seated men stirred and whispered, but no singular body spoke up. If they had any doubts about his father's final say, the time to voice their opinions had already passed. Jon got up from his seat, and switched the lights back on, heralding the dismissal of the meeting. In a way Jace had expected this sort of treatment, but on this occasion, the most damage had been done to Lily. Her professionalism had been questioned by Jon, and she was made to look inept in spite of him. This hurt him the most. Lily was his friend, and as a woman, she had personal experience in these matters. Why should her word be discounted by his arrogant sibling? It was even more evident that this patriarchal board felt that they knew what was best for women, and it sickened him. Jace looked to her sympathetically, while she silently smiled at each of the executives who exited the room; still murmuring amongst themselves. Jon had been the first to leave, while his father remained seated until the room was emptied. Walter might have wanted to speak to him, but exasperated by Jon's betrayal, he motioned for Lily to pack things up. "Jace, I know that you must take this personally, but you have to agree with your brother." Walter said almost sagely. "This affects only a tiny fraction of our consumers. Why spend our time uselessly on something that wouldn't be profitable in the end?" Jace cocked his head to the side and frowned, "I wasn't thinking about our profits. None of us are destined to go broke in the future. We have more funds than we could ever hope to spend. Why not invest in a worthy cause?" "You think we're being greedy son?" Walter asked, seemingly deep in thought. Jace didn't answer. Although he recognized his father's arrogance, to announce it would probably cause more damage than he wanted to inflict. In that instant, he understood that he needn't bring up anymore of his ideas. "The meeting is over. Jon saw to it that things didn't go well, as usual." he replied calmly. His father's eyes remained on him as he gathered his things, and walked back to his assistant. Jace never once looked his way. He was through begging for his father's consideration, and was past the mark of seeing any loving father who would support, or even entertain his rogue ideas. Lily's round face rested upon her upturned palms, and her eyes studied Jace as he motioned for their waiter. With his peripheral vision, he was aware that she had been watching him closely, and it was plain to see that she was concerned about him. While he ordered for them in French, and pretended to be amicable, his mind had been occupied by the events of their earlier meeting. Never had there been such a display of disrespect at their previous meetings, and this troubled him. Jon's disruption had been bolder this time around, and Jace couldn't figure him out. Why did he even care about this presentation when he never had a serious opinion about any of the projects that came before? It was safe to assume that he would never know what was truly on his brother's mind. They were no longer close, and almost strangers to one another. As an apology, he had taken Lily out to one of the finer restaurants tonight; Chateau Rueben. Instead of her offer of opting out for something more simplistic and less formal, he felt that he needed to make up for the earlier humiliation. He never mentioned where he would be taking her, and drove to a favorite French restaurant where he would dine with Siu on occasion. The building was nearly vacant, due to the weather. The snow had piled on almost six inches, and the flurries still came down as they entered. But he didn't mind the unfavorable weather. He appreciated the privacy they would be granted tonight. None of the company men who frequented the place would be here tonight. Amidst the fine crystal and modern decor, he could discuss any and everything with Lily, without worrying about running into anyone; especially his father. He could tell that she was impressed by his choice, because she was quite speechless as they entered the foyer. This was a five star luncheonette which only catered to those of a more refined palette, or in other words, anyone who could afford the pricey meals. No doubt Lily had heard of the place, but never dreamt of ever dining here with anyone. He ordered a bottle of Krug Rose as an aperitif, and although she didn't voice her concern, he read the uncertainty in her eyes. She was uncomfortable with being at the restaurant with him, and also for having him spend money on her. He on the other hand, felt that she deserved more than this for her everlasting patience; especially for what she had to deal with in the five years he'd known her. Her earliest run-in with Jon, although the most confrontational, had been one of many. So, he chose to give her a rare treat. He did this very often for Siu, but he was beginning to think that he needed to hold off on that special treatment; at least until he knew what was going on with her. He could relax for now in his friend's presence, without having to worry about arguments, or suspicion. Jace insisted that he order for the two of them. Left in her hands, she might have ordered more modestly, and less than her worth. As an appetizer he ordered Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Mousse, and for the main course, Grilled Lamb with Salade Nicoise. On their many dinners out, she expressed her taste for lamb, and he thought that she would love the dishes, having already tried them for himself. He would have had similar courses, but the events of the day had ruined his appetite. He ordered a lighter meal; a simple dish of mixed field greens in a vinaigrette sauce. When the appetizers arrived, they both ate without as much as a word about the meeting. He had apologized for his brother's insult, however he felt that his words hadn't been enough. "Would you please lighten up?" Lily said finally, kicking his foot lightly beneath their table. "It's just...how can you smile in their faces like that?" he asked, finally displaying his agitation. "After the way Jon spoke to you, I fought the urge to grab him by the collar, and punch his lights out!" She sighed, "Why?" "The way he spoke to you; I hate him for it." "Jace!" she scolded. "This is your brother we're talking about." "And? He's a disrespectful asshole. I know you're aware that they look down on you." "And what's new?" she shrugged. "Doesn't it bother you?" "I wouldn't say that it doesn't bother me. Sometimes I have to deal with these kinds of things. Professionally, and in my private life." "What do you mean?" he asked in a puzzled tone. "I guess being Jace Avery, son of the millionaire mogul makes you a little oblivious to real life." she teased, with a tiny smile. Jace sighed, "Are you trying to make me feel worse? I try to understand." Wicked Angel "Relax...I'm just teasing you. Before I joined your father's company I had many jobs. I've worked the lowest of the low, and you'd be surprised to know how people treat someone, depending on the position they hold." "You're saying you've had worse treatment? Not to sound naïve, but I can't imagine that in this day and age..." Lily raised an eyebrow in response. "Well...maybe that was naive to say." he said uncomfortably. "I guess it's difficult to relate, especially when someone is in your position. But I've had customers scream at me when I worked retail. Even had pennies thrown at me on a few occasion, for some stupid reason or another. I've seen managers who don't care about their duties, and rely on their lower employees to fall on the sword for the mistakes they've made. Trust me, humiliation is something one gets used to, especially if you're a woman of color, or any common employee for that matter. Unfortunately, most of the time it wouldn't do any good to react to it. So I just brush it off, and keep it moving. I won't be distracted from my goals. Take the team for instance. Jon treats them like they're idiots, and beneath him. Sorry to say, but he's probably the only idiot there." "I know, and I'm sorry about the way he treats everyone, especially you. I hope you don't take it too personally. He really meant to destroy my ideas through you." "It's alright. I think we're doing the right thing. That's why I brought the problem to you, instead of him. You would have taken action, while he wouldn't. I believe we're put into certain positions for a reason, and we should do what we can with the power we have. And...I don't think you're naïve for wanting to protect people from harm...even though your father might patronize you for it." Jace smiled. "No need to try to make me feel better. I know that I haven't lived a difficult life, so my complaints can't compare to those of most people." "When have I ever sugar-coated anything?" she asked "I really meant it. Even if they don't agree with us now, we've put our concerns out there. I'm certain they already know, but have kept it hush-hush...or even decided to ignore it until it became a bigger issue." "That's what I don't get! Why wait for the problem to get much bigger?" he asked, and combed his fingers through his dark waves. "Usually, I wouldn't have said a thing, and just left it all to you." "So...why did you use your voice? Especially knowing that they would have dismissed everything you said." "Oh, two reasons." she said lightheartedly. "Number one, I care about this project more than any I've ever worked on, and two..." Swiftly, she reached for her handbag, and pulled out a tiny clear bottle from inside. Jace's eyes narrowed, trying to better recognize its contents. It only took a second to see that she held up an empty shot bottle of vodka. He began to laugh, and she laughed with him. This accounted for why she so boldly accused the board of not being able to relate, or sympathize with women's health. Jace had thought that it was rather uncharacteristic of her to make such a claim, however she still spoke the truth. Lily had said what he never had the guts to say, and his respect for her had grown since then. He wished that her boldness could be transplanted into him. Not even the courage derived from drinking had ever convinced him to speak so candidly. "So you spiked your coffee? Shit, I wish you'd done the same to mine. I might have shut Jon and my dad up, right then and there." he said, vocalizing his lack of bravery. He felt even more comfortable with her now. He had always assumed such a proper demeanor around his colleagues, but there was this charm about Lily that made him feel connected to her. He could easily meld into her world, and be accepted there. Not for his position, or the size of his wallet, but for the person that he was beneath the pricey suits. "I never do this, but I wanted to back you up." she confessed. "Sometimes I do get nervous...especially for you." "But why?" he frowned. "You shouldn't be afraid for me Lily. I'm not in any danger." "I know, but you have a bigger voice than I do...as the company's heir." and she said the latter part with an emphasis that Jace couldn't ignore. "I think that theory was just proven wrong. You have a presence about you that made Jon look like a fool. And anyway, he'll most likely take the chair as President when my dad retires." "I doubt that. You're a good man, and also more deserving of the title. I look at you and I see someone born to manage and oversee the more important operations. No doubt you feel overwhelmed by your brother's tenacity, but everyone respects you the most. Without the little people pulling the strings, this corporation wouldn't exist, and they all see you as a leader. I think that counts for a lot. When the time comes, I think your father will have more sense than to just leave everything in your brother's hands. Maybe Jon knows this too, and he envies you for it." "Why should he? He has my father's eyes and ears. I'm no more than just a reminder of my mother." Lily grew quiet for a moment, and she gave him a pitying look. "What is it?" he frowned. "You've never said this much about your personal life in front of me." "I trust you." he said with a smile. "Enough to tell me such personal things." she asked worriedly. "It's no secret. Everyone knows about our family dynamic." "True...but no one's ever heard it directly from the mouth of an Avery." "Well I hope that you find some consolation in my little confession. Real friends are hard to find." "I do." she smiled. Chapter Two Dinner had been delightful, and after a few glasses of champagne and humorous conversation, Jace regained his appetite. They enjoyed a second course of Roast Leg of Lamb, and later Cold Orange Soufflé for dessert. The delectable meal had enhanced their evening, and they ended up dining late into the evening. When the hour proved too late to let Lily find her way home alone, Jace offered to drive her back. She lived only a few miles out of his way, and he didn't mind. Consequently, it took him nearly an hour to return home. Despite the weather, their drive had been a pleasant one, and neither of them worried about the meeting anymore. They expected that they could try again after the spring, before any new ideas went up before the board. It only occurred to him that Siu would be waiting up for him when he reached his apartment. The lights to his floor were turned on, revealing that she had come in with the spare keys. He had no idea if he would see her tonight. She did have her own apartment, but spoke of wanting to move in with him. Jace didn't know if the offer still stood, but he would find out eventually. There was no doubt that she would ask where he had been, and of course he would tell her everything. This hadn't been his first dinner out with Lily, and he had nothing to hide. Upon entering the apartment, he hoped that she would console him after his rough day. Before he could tell his story however, she approached him with her arms crossed, and an angry scowl upon her face. Nevertheless he went to her, and kissed her on the cheek. "We need to talk." she said, still glowering at him with angry eyes. Jace sighed, and shook his head. "Can't this wait Siu. I've had a long day, and I just want to go to bed." He was reminded that he had given her a hard time for the very same thing, so he humored her for the moment. "No, it can't wait." she continued. "I've been quiet long enough, and there are some things you need to know." "So, this is it huh? You're finally going to tell me the truth? Took you long enough." Jace muttered. "I wanted to work things out with you, but I knew something was going on. Now after weeks of doubt, I don't even think I want to know why, or who it was that changed you." "You don't want to know? I'm not the one who did anything wrong! That was you!" she said with attitude. "Excuse me?" he frowned incredulously. "Don't pretend like you haven't been messing around on me Jace." she screeched at him. "What the hell are you talking about? If I'm not at work, I'm with you!" "If you're not at work, or with me, you're with Lily!" she corrected. "And? She's my Project Manager! What the hell are you saying?" "Everyone in the building is talking about you two spending time together. You have lunch together, go to bars, and have dinner with her almost every night." "She's my colleague Siu! Don't make things out to be what they're not." "Colleague my ass! You're probably sleeping with her, and you had the audacity to try touching me last night. I gave you a chance not wanting to believe it, but everything's been confirmed. What do you see in her that you'd turn your back on me?" "Siu, who the hell is filling your head up with these lies? I've been faithful to you." he retorted; his tone angry and loud. "It's over Jace. I'm not going to argue, or bother with your lies. I deserve better!" "You can't be serious! Do I look like I'd cheat on you? You know me for God's sake!" "I thought I did, but I'm not so sure anymore. I'm the daughter of Andrew Sato dammit! Do you know what it's like to be the laughing stock of the whole company? My father believed in us as a couple. He even wanted to back our engagement." "Listen to me. This is crazy. Why would I...when would I have the time to cheat on you?" "I know how you guys in the big leagues work! Having families at home, then fucking it all up because you can't keep your dick in your pants!" Angered beyond control, he spat out, "Just because your father did it to your mom, that doesn't mean I'm the same!" The memories connected with the statement scalded her; he saw it in her expression. In afterthought, he realized that he shouldn't have said it. Siu looked like she would cry, but held the tears back. Feeling a great deal of remorse, he reached out to her, but she shoved him away. He wanted to hug and kiss her, only to prove that he was not the kind of man she most recently thought him to be. But her expression said that it was too late to make amends. "Fuck you!" she shrieked at him. "I'm leaving you, and don't expect me to come back. I don't know what happened to you, but I know that I was wrong to trust you." Her words chilled him to the core, but what could he say? Her mind was set, and there was no taking back what he had said. In utter desperation, and to make her see sense, he said something that he shouldn't have. Maybe he thought the statement would convince her of his fidelity, but he had fucked up, and in the worst way. She threw on her red pea coat, and bolted out the door with a tear stained face. He too felt like he would cry, and wanted to go after her, but he was paralyzed. He suddenly felt queasy, and wished that he had someone to talk to. Only his mother came to mind. He wanted to tell her what was wrong, because she always made everything better. But she was gone, and he would never hear her comforting words ever again. Talking to his father was out of the question because he cared about no one, other than himself and Jon. Forcing back his anguish, he staggered to the bathroom, feeling more alone than ever before. Two weeks later... Jace sat at one of the tables, observing the attendees of the office party. This was the only time of the year when the underlings of Avery & Soler Enterprises were shown their worth. Had he been in his father's position, he would have held one of these more often. They surely had the funds to reward their employees, however Walter might have seen this as a waste, with Jon riding his coattails. The party was elegant and catered to perfection. As expected, everything was done with pomp, in the name of the Avery family. One of the company lounges, big enough to hold two hundred people, was transformed into what looked like a hotel foyer. The ivory walls were the only plain thing about the room. Long dining tables set with Lilac tablecloths and bouquets of pink magnolias held elegant hors d'oeuvres of many colors and textures, countless bottles of expensive champagnes, and glistening flute glasses. In fact, Jace thought that the setup quite resembled a wedding banquet, however this was not a place of romance. It might have been if Siu was here, but he had come alone. The employees who attended were only those who occupied the 62nd and 65th floor. Harboring over a thousand employees in the tower alone, these annual events were managed separately, depending on the branch or department. This one, the last of the planned events, celebrated the hard work of all the customer service agents, secretaries and supervisors who worked beneath Jace, and Jonathan. For the meantime, everyone seemed content and enjoyed the fine cuisine. He however, was justifiably in a bad mood. Jon's presence, as well as the constant reminders of Siu's accusations floating around in his head, argued against any kind of enjoyment. He had called her many times to apologize, but she would not talk to him. He left message after message, but not once did she return his calls. Not knowing the finer details of his personal life, Lily had coaxed him into attending. Being accused of cheating was enough for him to just stay at home in bed, but he didn't want to be alone. He would have spent the time beating himself up for how he had handled the fight. For the first hour he stuck it out, and only sipped on a few glasses of champagne; all the while keeping to himself, and remaining at the far end of the room. He was in no mood to be social, and hoped that no one would take notice of him. Too tired to bear the festivities any longer, he retreated back to his office, and observed the party through the window blinds. Although he hadn't wanted solitude, he couldn't feign happiness either. He had hoped that Siu would show up, and they would reconcile on the spot, but she had chosen to stay away. Lily, the supposed object of his affection, had been occupied most of the night as well; with Jon. She spent the better part of the first hour chatting with him, and Jace couldn't believe what he was seeing. She was with his damned brother...and laughing with him for God's sake! Laughing with the man who had humiliated her! He wondered what her agenda was. Or was it that Jon wanted to keep torturing him? If anything, it lent to his irritability even more. She deserved better conversation than what that asshole had to offer. "At least she looks happy." he thought sadly, as he continued to observe her amusement in his brother's company. At that very moment, as a combination of loneliness and hurt coursed through him, he realized that he missed Lily. Because of the argument, and wanting to avoid any further rumors, he had kept his distance. He wanted to pretend that he wasn't attached to her, but in fact, he definitely was. So much so that probably the whole office did see it; along with whomever had been whispering in Siu's ear. He could never cheat on her. Deception was never his style, and he was more offended by the fact that she believed that he was capable of such a thing. And Lily...she wasn't his type. Yet, maybe his absence and lack of enthusiasm had pushed her away from him, and into the arms of Jon. But how else could he have handled this? There was no other way. As he thought the words, and watched his brother's arm cling to her shoulder, some new emotion arose. At first he couldn't put his finger on it, but once the words, "She's mine, not yours!" surfaced in his thoughts, he realized that he was indeed jealous. It infuriated him to see her with Jon, and he didn't quite know what that meant. His heart sank as he realized that maybe he did have feelings for Lily; however small. Jon was dressed in one of his best designer suits and nearly all the women had eyes for him, yet he seemed to dote on Lily. This made Jace feel sick and worrisome. He felt like a meager pawn in this little game. In an attempt to redeem himself, he imagined Siu in Jon's embrace. The thought did not anger him as it should have, and he was mortified. Tearing himself away from the blinds, he walked towards his desk and computer screen, hoping for some distraction to alleviate his guilt. He had no idea where to go from here. It was true that he hadn't cheated on Siu, yet he wasn't completely guiltless. He had unconsciously felt more for Lily than he realized, and for the first time he was inclined to agree with his perceived persona. Maybe he was naïve, and out of touch with the reality of things. Suddenly, there was a soft rap on the door, and he was immediately shaken out of his thoughts. "Who is it?" he asked over the intercom. His door had an electronic lock. One which he usually kept engaged, in case he didn't feel like being bothered, especially by Jon. "It's me!" a feminine voice responded. Lily had come to seek him out. He deactivated the lock, and she came in. She held a tiny white plate with a slice of iced marbled cake in one hand, and a filled glass of champagne in the other. "Why are you playing the hermit? You should come out." she said, as the door shut behind her. Tonight, her hair was pulled back into a tight pony-tail, and she wore a studded, black tunic with ankle-length leggings. The slimming outfit suited her figure perfectly. Jace had tried not to admire the curves of her hips which seemed to flare out from the rest of her figure, but there it all was. He had also taken notice of the graceful way in which she moved towards him, and above all, how he felt when she was near. Lily was a breath of fresh air. Her presence seemed to always chase away his melancholy. Now with the help of this recent disaster, he was no longer oblivious to her body, or her feminine charms. "Still brooding huh?" she asked sympathetically. "I wasn't brooding." he replied defensively. "I just wanted a little peace and quiet." His tone made him feel sick. He sounded like a whiny brat who had been sulking in a room all alone, because he couldn't have his way. "Then why didn't you just stay home?" she asked. "I don't want to be at home right now." "Does this have to do with the meeting? Because if it does, it's not as bad as you're making it out to be. In fact, I had a little chat with your brother." "Yes, I saw. Why were you letting him all over you like that?" he blurted out. She had frowned at his response, but then a tiny smile crept into the corners of her mouth. Realizing the tiny blunder, his own face grew hot with embarrassment, and he avoided her gaze as she set the plate down in front of him. "Do I detect a bit of jealousy?" she smirked. "No...I...I just don't think that he has good intentions, that's all." he stammered. "Well, it's cute of you to worry about me, but you have nothing to worry about. I'm a big girl, I can handle him." she said persuasively. "Have some dessert. Maybe you'll feel better." "So what were you guys talking about anyway?" he asked, evading her offering. "You, and the new campaign. He's decided to reconsider, and he wants to take another look at the details." "Really?" Jace asked doubtfully. "And he's willing to do this when?" "Tomorrow, if you're up to it. He requested that I explain it to him more thoroughly." "Uh huh...and he wants to do this with you, alone? He doesn't want me there?" "Oh, don't make it sound so sinister. I want you there, but considering how you two get along, he wanted you to sit this one out. I've asked some of our core team members to come in tomorrow for a small meeting. Once Jon gives his okay, we can make plans to get the ball rolling after the holidays." Something about this didn't make sense. Why did Jon not want him to be there? Of course he was more than confident in Lily's ability to bring the presentation to life, but in a less formal atmosphere, he would be able to keep his brother in check. Also, he was most certain that he had already made a thorough presentation before the board. What else was there to know? To say the least, all of this was disquieting. Wicked Angel "I'd rather be there with all of you." Jace said somberly. "How did you get him to hear you out anyway?" She laughed and winked, "Never underestimate the powers of a woman." Jace wasn't entirely sure of what her response meant, but wanting more clarification, yet dreading the response he asked, "So...I'm assuming that there's something going on between the two of you?" "What?" she giggled, "No, not at all. Besides, your brother isn't my type." "Oh..." "Honestly, a man like you is what I would usually go for." she confessed. "Me?" Jace frowned. As she opened her mouth to say more, Jon suddenly opened the door, without knocking, or asking for admission. "Hey little brother!" he called out, as he let himself in. Jace wished that he had locked the door behind Lily, however that would have seemed more than suspicious. "Jonathan!" Lily exclaimed with a smile. "We were just talking about you. I was telling your brother that you decided to reconsider." "What are you up to?" Jace asked, eyes narrowed at his brother. "Up to? Nothing! I swear. I just came to tell you the good news, but I see that Lily already beat me to it." "Yes, well I've heard the news. You can go now." Jace said bluntly. "Where's Siu?" Jon asked. "Thought you guys were going to come together." "She had other plans." Jace replied despondently. "Really?" Jon asked, and raised an eyebrow. "Well in any case, I'll be meeting with Lily and her group tomorrow. Maybe you should sit this one out. You look really tired." "I'll see you tomorrow Jon." Jace said grimly, dismissing his brother's probably accurate observation. He was tired, and hadn't been sleeping very well since the breakup. But he wouldn't let Jon pull one over on him. He was all too familiar with his brother's dubious nature. Something was up, and he would get to the bottom of it. "Whatever you say little brother. See you there. I won't interrupt you two any longer." Jon replied and immediately excused himself; leaving them alone. Jace hadn't forgotten what Lily said before the intrusion, but he had grown somewhat nervous of the confession. She couldn't have meant that she was interested in him. Maybe she just liked quiet men...or men who were the exact opposite of his brother. Convincing himself that this was a harmless statement, he cleared his throat and tried not to seem on edge. "Are you alright?" she asked. "I'm fine." he said forcing a smile, but avoiding eye contact. "No you're not. I know you. You're worried about the rumors going around aren't you?" "What? What rumors?" he asked anxiously. "That we're more than colleagues; even more than friends." "You need to tell me where all this is coming from. I had an argument with Siu, and she seems to think the same thing. It's like my life went totally out of control in a matter of minutes. I don't know who's spreading these lies but..." "Is it such a bad thing?" she interrupted. "Is what a bad thing?" "Being around me?" "Not at all. I love your company Lily. I just..." "You're afraid of what people would think." she interjected. As she said this, she drew closer to him; too close for comfort. She was now at his side, and he turned in his armchair to face her. He half suspected that she was the one spreading the rumors, but he couldn't believe that. Not Lily. "It's not that." he tried to reassure her. "I don't like lies being told about me. But I don't mean anything malicious by what I've just said. You've been a great friend to me, and you're irreplaceable. Being seen with you has never been a problem." "But it might be a problem now?" she countered, making her way to the back of his chair. "Would you change your mind if the rumors got worse?" "For the record...you're not the one who started all this, are you?" he asked nervously; hoping that he wouldn't anger her with the accusation. "No, it wasn't me. I'd never do anything to upset you, and you know that. But...you didn't answer my question. Would you change your mind?" Her hands rested upon his shoulders, and surprisingly she proceeded to massage him. "No I wouldn't. I promise you." he sighed, relieved that she hadn't made a move on him. At the very last moment, he had been afraid that she would, and didn't quite know how he would have handled it. Although the massage was quite forward of her, he took it as a simple and friendly gesture. Lily most likely knew him better than anyone. He had been stressed out for weeks, and this might just be her way of showing concern. The soft kneading of her fingers felt so good, that he shut his eyes and rested his head against the chair. He forgot himself, and for the moment, all worries evaporated. The pleasure of the massage, now combined with the effects of the champagne, were bringing him treacherously close to the point of a gratifying erection. Her hands were lifted from his shoulders suddenly, and with his eyes still shut, he expected to see Lily on her way out when he opened them. Instead, he felt movement against his crotch, and his zipper went down. His eyes popped opened, and he jumped out of his mild stupor. Lily was now crouched down on her knees, and she reached into his trousers for the partially flaccid organ. "W-what are you doing?" he asked, startled by her advances; his hand quickly covering his crotch. She gingerly lifted the hand, and placed it on his lap. With her other hand, she pulled out the pink organ, and began to stroke its length. "Lily, I-I can't..." "Jace, everyone already thinks that there's something between us. Let me do this for you. Consider it a well-deserved Christmas present." she said with a smile. Her fingers, quick and dexterous, presented a tiny wrapped packet from out of her ample bosom. She immediately tore the packet with her teeth, pulled out a rolled neon-green condom, and slipped it over his organ. Jace, slowed by the effects of the alcohol, felt as if he was dreaming. Although his body felt sluggish, he made an effort to look down at what she was doing. He had wanted to stop her, and he could have done just that, gotten up, and asked her to leave; but he did nothing. Instead, he watched as her luscious berry-tinted lips descended over the tip of his bulbous organ. The entire shaft, now coated in a translucent neon-green barrier, grew slick with her saliva as she took him into her mouth. In that instant, he wanted to pull the guard off and feel the truth of her soft mouth, however for safety's sake he left her to her methods. There was something extremely erotic about the bright color. It spoke to him, and said that there was a side to Lily that was both vibrant and playful; too complex for him to know from a mere office friendship. He groaned aloud, and for the first time he caressed her cheek. He wished that he was capable of more action, but in the throes of this distinct pleasure, he couldn't move; couldn't think. Lily had stroked him into semi-erection, but now she unpredictably used her teeth to excite him even more. While she moaned and purred like a kitten, audibly announcing her excitement, she went from tongue, to teeth; grazing the veiny skin of his organ, and threatening to shred the condom. She was introducing him to a new pleasure that he had never known of. Even though his eyes were fixated upon her mouth, he would glance at the outline of her full breasts from time to time. He wished that they were free of clothing. He wanted to strip her, and do all the wilder things that he could never do with Siu. She had never been this spontaneous in their lovemaking; a reason why he let Lily do as she wished. Jace sank back deeper into his arm chair, and almost slid down the seat. All of his focus had gone to his pelvis. He felt and knew nothing else. The rest of his body had been numbed by the alcohol, or more accurately, his senses had been overtaken by the overwhelming pleasure of the sexiest, and most dangerous blowjob he had ever received. As if reading his thoughts Lily withdrew from him, and with moist lips, she said in a throaty voice, "It would be horrible to leave you like this, wouldn't it?" Her mouth had quickly fallen back over the knobbed end of his shaft, and he shivered as the green organ once again disappeared into her mouth. He tried to answer her, but the words stuck in his throat. His efforts to talk were completely thwarted when her hand gripped the base of his shaft, and slid down to his testicles, where she proceeded to massage them. They were soft and clean shaven; exactly as Siu preferred them, but he only wanted to know what Lily thought now. "What if I said that I was wet for you? Would you fuck me right here, and now?" she asked. Not knowing what to say, and stunned by her use of language, he stuttered, "I-I...don't know." She smiled and licked the florescent green tip, and his cock slightly twitched against her tongue. "How about after the meeting, we have a chat. I have a little proposition for you." Her words instantly reminded him of where he was, and he knew that none of this should be happening. Not wanting to hold off an orgasm, he released into her mouth; or rather into the condom. His fears of being found out came back to haunt him, and with a loud groan, masked by the party music, he came in short, yet ample bursts. Lily never mocked him for his premature ejaculation, nor did she seem surprised by it. He hoped that she understood the risks they were taking. Their surroundings were a major disadvantage to his current libido. Had they been elsewhere, preferably somewhere private, he would have lasted a lot longer. He wanted to tell her all of this, even show her what he was capable of, but there was too much at stake. Lily slowly stood upright, grabbed a few tissues from his desk, and carefully peeled away the used condom. It was heavy with his fluids, and she was careful not to have any messes leak onto his crotch. Successful at this, she stood up and crumpled the evidence of their little tryst into the pile of tissues. With a few more sheets, she wiped the sweat off his brow, then attended to the wet corners of her mouth. "I hope to see you tomorrow." she said with a smile, and walked towards the door with a switch of her hips. Before she exited, she turned back to him and asked, "You will be there, won't you?" Jace nodded his head dumbly, still trying to compose himself. With a wink she walked out, leaving him stupefied as she exited to join the party. Chapter Three Jace lay back against his pillows, and watched as Lily crawled seductively towards him. Carefully, she mounted him, and the sweet scent of her skin filled his nostrils. She leaned towards the nape of his neck, kissed his throat gently, and whispered, "Jace...are you sure this is what you want?" Of course it was. Couldn't she tell how badly he had wanted her? Why else would they be here together? There was no going back, and he was in too deep to ever stop now. His fingers eagerly reached for her supple behind, and he groped the soft flesh, letting his actions speak in his stead. She on the other hand, remained still. It was obvious that she wanted to hear him say it. Only then would she willingly engage. "Everything's changed for me, and it's because of you. So yes, I want this, and I want you to be mine." he whispered, and looked into her eyes. He had referred to needing her in every aspect of the word; career-wise and sexually. His passion for her had multiplied over the short hours since their last meeting. She must have seen the terrible lust in his eyes, and maybe she too felt as he did, because her lips found his quickly. For a while, their tongues met and tangled in a passionate kiss. Jace's hands never left her behind, and his groin ached for her. Carefully, beneath her grinding pelvis, he pulled his erect organ out. In his grip, the shaft stood rigid, and searing hot beneath her labia. Once more, she asked, "Are you sure?" This time he spared no words. Instead he let go of his cock, which needed no help to stand on its own, and slipped the spandex cloth of her thong aside. She felt the heat of him; that much he knew, because she flinched once their flesh came into contact. Without further hesitation, she slid down on top of him; burying the hot tip inside her body. His head fell back, and he gasped as the pleasure of invading her tight snatch engulfed him. "Damn...you're so wet!" he groaned with his eyes shut tightly. "You like it, don't you baby?" Lily whispered softly in his ear. "Want more?" "Yes." he breathed; eyes still shut. As he bid, she lowered herself, and took every inch of his pulsing organ. This was more than pleasurable; it was beautiful in a way. The heat of her inner core, and the tightness of her flesh almost rendered him to tears. Lily rode him slowly, savoring her own pleasure. She lifted his hands from her buttocks, and raised them to her heaving breasts. She placed them beneath the naked globes, and already knowing what she craved, he lifted her blouse, and slid the silk fabric up and away from her body. Now the sable breasts were exposed to him; each tipped with dark areolas and puckered nipples. He needed no coaxing or encouragements. He knew what to do before she even asked. His fingers groped them, while his mouth latched onto her right nipple. He flicked his tongue at it, then gently suckled the rough bud. His devotion to her teats caused more of her wetness to flood down onto his crotch, and with the nipple still grasped tightly in his mouth, his hands found their previous positions. He squeezed her buttocks so tightly that he was sure he left marks on her skin as he forced her down. "Yes, just like that baby!" she groaned, as her fingernails dug into his back. "I'm all yours Jace!" It would have been easy to release and give into his own pleasure, but he wouldn't repeat that same hastiness in his office. Her pleasure should be equal to his own; and so, he waited. Even though she had begun as the dominant one, he used his strength, and overturned her body. Laying on top of her, his hands clasped her own, and pinned them to the headboard. Jace thrust hard into her center, and all he heard now were her excited cries. She called out his name loudly and freely, as if she didn't care that anyone would hear her. It was music to his ears. No woman had ever enjoyed him this much. If he was doing something right, he definitely wouldn't stop now. So, he gave it to her with all the strength he could afford. "Yes Jace! Yes!" she called out. The words echoed in his ears, even as he awoke in a heated sweat. His breath was shallow, and his body slick with sweat. He looked down, past his defined abdomen, and wasn't surprised at the erection beneath his checkered blue underwear. A tiny damp spot had accumulated where the mushroom tip rested. He had been a teenager the last time he'd had a fevered wet dream, and it made him feel vulnerable. His hands throbbed with pain, and he realized that not only was he clutching the bed sheets tightly, but his fingernails dug through the material, cutting into his closed palms. He took a deep breath and released the tight fist, allowing the pulsing in his hands to subside. Although the absence of Siu still pained him, he was happy that she hadn't spent the night with him. His wet dream might have given him away. He was most assuredly confused, and wasn't sure that he could pull off playing innocent. He still clung to the hope that she would return, yet what he experienced with Lily begged that she not come back. At this point, he could only wait to see what unfolded. He looked to his night table, where a silver digital clock blinked the time. It was 8 a.m., which gave him two hours to get to the meeting. With enough time to spare, he reached down below his navel, under the thin fabric of his boxers, and grabbed his stiff cock. He was still recovering from the dream. His breathing hadn't slowed down, and his heart still raced. He hadn't voluntarily done anything incriminating with Lily, but the memory of their brief encounter in his office continued to replay in his mind, exciting him. He remembered her lips, and the way they slipped over him. He had no true feeling of her mouth because of the condom, but he did feel the softness of her inner cheek; something his hands could never mimic. Nevertheless, he continued to stroke away; squeezing the veiny organ, and pumping with even and controlled movements. He was a total wreck because among many things, he was both excited and nervous to see Lily's face again. He wondered what he would say or do once they were together, and alone. He had always been reluctant, but she managed to coax something feral and dangerous out of his subconscious. This radical and new aspect of himself wanted to take risks, and topple all standing towers. So far, he had held the beast back successfully. He feared that once he gave in, the man he prized himself to be would be forever altered. But altered into what? Jace went to his office, as was his usual habit, before making it to any meeting. This one would not be held in the boardroom, but rather on one of the floors below; where the more intricate details of their projects were usually discussed. In this gathering, Jon would be the outcast. His brother rarely sat in on any of these discussions, and Jace felt that he would have the upper hand this time. He had almost dismissed all thoughts of his tryst with Lily, until he came to his desk. On top of the polished marble surface lay a tiny, black, box; embellished with a blue silk ribbon. Neither his father or brother were ever known for sneaking gifts into his office, and only Lily had ever dared to enter the room while he was out. Curious as to what lay inside, he lifted the top, and placed the cardboard lid aside on the desk. Inside was a tiny silver device; sleek and rectangular in shape, and about 2x3 inches in length. It resembled a flash drive, but when he removed it from the box, he saw that it wasn't. There was a single round button on the upside of the device, and written below that, was the manufacturer's name cast in small letters. It read 'Passion & Play,' and although it was unfamiliar, it confirmed who the sender might be. Tearing his eyes away from the curious gift, he searched the contents of the box, and found a note inside. In bold typed letters it read: 'PRESS THE BUTTON AND TAKE CONTROL!' Frowning, he looked back and forth between the note and the device. The cryptic message boggled his mind. He stared at the puzzling device for a few moments, then pressed the button once; hoping for some revelation to this mystery. There was nothing; no noise, no fireworks, or anyone jumping out from the room's corners to surprise him. Slipping the item into his jacket pocket, he retrieved his notes from the desk drawer, and headed out for the meeting. He couldn't be late, and would no doubt find everyone, including Lily, already waiting for him. On his way to the elevator, he pondered what the message might mean. Was it a metaphor for something, or had some unnoticed action occurred when he pressed the button? What exactly was he supposed to take control of? Unexpectedly, he found someone standing at the elevator doors, waiting to go down with him. Richard Soler was his best friend, old schoolmate, and the son of the other mogul half of the company, Francois Soler. He was a part of that essential team, and would also be attending the meeting. Had Jace been given a choice to choose his family, Richard might have been the brother he wanted. Circumstances might not have torn them apart, as they did with him and his actual brother. Richard resembled Jace in almost every way, and might have even been mistaken for family. This was probably why Jace felt drawn to him. They both had blue eyes and jet-black hair, except Richard's curly, dark, waves were almost shoulder length. In college, his long tresses had been much wilder. He had donned the look of a rock star back then. But for the sake of his esteemed father, he was required to keep it at a decent length. Jace felt for him, because Richard had loved the long curls which reaped him many female admirers. But he too had to deal with his overbearing, yet 'well meaning' family. Wicked Angel When Jace arrived at the university, he and Richard became quick friends. They had both taken up the same studies, and towards the end of graduation, after finding about Jace and his family's reputation, his father grew interested in not only investing, but becoming a prime partner. Although Francois Soler barely graced their meetings, he was still a prominent figurehead in the company. He preferred to be stationed elsewhere, at one of their many high-rise headquarters. "So what did you do?" Richard asked with creased eyebrows, and a sly smile. "What?" Jace asked, feigning puzzlement. Jace knew that his friend had waited for him, just to confirm the rumors. He was also aware that he had neglected Richard for Lily. It would pain him to have to admit this. It hadn't even occurred to him to call on his best friend for help or advice when Siu deserted him. He had been too out of his mind to think straight. Surprisingly, Richard didn't seem angry with him. Instead he looked curious, and maybe even eager to learn more about what was going on. "Don't give me that." his friend went on. "Your name's been on everybody's tongue since the party. You showed up alone without Siu, and I heard a few whispering about you and Lily. Word about your break up is all over the place. So...what the hell did you do?" Jace sighed and stepped into the elevator wearily. "Look, I don't want to talk about it. It's all bullshit anyway." Richard looked at him thoughtfully. "Well, I didn't really think that you cheated on her. I know you wouldn't do something like that. But can't say that I'm surprised either." "Surprised about what?" "I see the way you look at Lily. I was getting jealous." he chuckled. "Great! You too?" Jace groaned, and landed hard against the elevator walls. He supposed that his best friend deserved the truth, however he couldn't tell him everything just yet. Not here, and not now; especially when he was still unsure of the circumstances. He was no longer safe and secure, and intuition told him that he could never go back to those times again. Lily had abruptly changed everything. "So...I suppose the rumors about you two aren't completely false?" Richard continued. In dismay he responded, "What do you think?" "Hey relax. I'm just asking, one friend to another. You haven't been looking so good, and I'm worried about you. I just want you to know that if you need to talk, I'm here. "I know. I just need to take care of some things before I talk about it. Gotta keep my head clear for the meeting. After everything blows over, we can talk." "I understand. Talk about the worst time for this to happen to you. It's the holidays for God's sake." "Yeah..." Jace trailed off. He was never fond of the holidays after his mother's death, and didn't want to think about what could have been. The cards seemed to be against him, and all he had was Richard. He wasn't sure that Lily would continue to stay in his corner with the perpetual rumors. Unaware of his own actions, during the entire conversation, he had been thumbing the device continually, without a thought. It had become a mood ball of sorts, and he wondered what the consequences would be. Most likely there were none at all, and it was just a prank. He thought of asking Richard's opinion. His friend would have been discreet, but the elevator doors sprang open, cutting the moment short. In the far corner, past the waiting crowd, he spotted Lily in conversation with Jon. "This again." he thought to himself while making his way through the corridor. He didn't know if they were both doing this on purpose, or whether his jealousy was causing him to read too deeply into the situation. Nevertheless, he forced smiles, wished everyone a good morning, and pretended that he was his normal self. Jon saw them first, and gestured to alert Lily of their approach. As always, her face lit up with a smile when she saw him. Jace's heart skipped a beat at her evident pleasure, but he pressed on without returning the smile. It might have seemed cold of him, but he didn't want to provoke any more gossip. "You're late little brother. We've been waiting on you." Jon said with a smirk. "It's only 9:45." Richard responded; looking to his Bvlgari watch. "We're fifteen minutes early." "Well Jace is always an early bird, and usually the first to be here. We've all been wondering what happened to him." Indeed, he was usually the first person to arrive at most meetings. However, his excitable dream, and the masturbation that followed, had made him a little late. He had quite a time at trying to get rid of the erection, and left his apartment much later than usual. Ignoring his brother, he asked Lily, "Is everything ready?" "Yes, we're all ready when you are." she said with an amiable smile. "I'll need a few minutes to get my notes out." he responded. "That's fine. I was just briefing Jonathan on everything that would be discussed today." "You know me!" Jon cut in. "I can be a little impatient." "No shit!" Richard whispered under his breath, low enough for only the four of them to hear it. Jon narrowed his eyes at Richard, but said nothing. Jace found this humorous, but he went straight inside, not wanting to waste any more time. Lily left Jon's side for a moment, and followed him; her heels announcing her enclosing proximity. Jace did his best not to look up from the files, because she now made him anxious. He had never wanted it to be this way with her, but there was nothing he could do about it. "Here." she said in almost a whisper, and handed him a tiny white folded card. He assumed that her note would have something to do with the presentation, however when he read it, he was both perplexed and intrigued. In Lily's handwriting, the note read: 'I assume that you found my little present. Every time you press the button, a tiny electric charge will be transmitted to a tiny device located somewhere on my person. I'll let you figure out where that might be. The point of this little game? You have the power to please, or torture me. You're in control now.' Jace looked back at her, and she winked at him, before Jon, or the other employees walked in. His fingers reached into his pockets, and not certain that he believed her, he gauged the consequences of indulging in her tiny diversion. There was only one place that she could have inserted the device. If he was correct, depending on his actions, she would be brought to an orgasm, or at the very least, close to one. To test his theory, he pressed the button gently, then observed Lily. While she situated herself with the others, she was as normal as ever. There was no change in her body language, or tone of voice. He wondered if he had been fooled. She might have expected him to be timid, instead of trying his hand at anything adventurous. More than annoyed by this perception, he pressed the smooth button down with more force. This time, he tried not to stare at Lily, but only kept her in peripheral view. He held the button down for a total of three seconds, and in the corner of his eye, she shuddered and dropped a few of her files. She quickly picked up the pile, feigning clumsiness, and resumed her chatter. Within the next thirty seconds he pressed the button at a variety of intervals, and while he played it cool, he saw the subtle changes in Lily as the jolts were indeed transmitted to her crotch. Where else would she have put it? The torture was evident to others apart from him, because a few times the ladies present asked if she was feeling alright. She seemed to experience brief moments of absentmindedness, and violent trembling. Jace was overcome with satisfaction, as well as a feeling of total authority. He understood why Lily had done this for him, and he hoped to thank her for it when the presentation was done. He had professed to not feeling in control when they'd last been together. Left to her own devices, she was correcting that imbalance in him. Eight individuals apart from Lily, Jon and Richard were present. All except Jon were crucial in the development of this project. Other than the other two males present, the remaining employees were all female. Jace recognized the board's penchant for chauvinism, and thought that they were being unfair. Their products catered to both sexes, yet the majority of their profits were accrued from both feminine and infant products. Of course there were female candidates most capable of becoming the next CEO, and maintaining a balanced viewpoint in the boardroom. But the directors had seen to it that someone undeserving, namely his brother, received the next opening. Jace wasn't sure that Jon cared at all, or even took the work seriously. His interests lay elsewhere with architectural design, however Walter wanted him close. He almost felt sorry for his brother, because in a way, he too was trapped by Walter's expectations. He might have gone so far as to support his brother in his interests, but Jon forced him to keep his guard up. There could be no bonding, or brotherly protection in a relationship like that. As Jace went through the presentation, his attention remained mainly on Lily and Jon. He somehow felt more confident every time he drove Lily to tremble at his behest. She was doing a great job of maintaining control, however he wondered how long she would be able stand it. As for Jon, his attention always shifted to something other than where it needed to be. While he should have been the one paying attention, he would frequently take out his cellphone. Why was he even here if he couldn't pay attention to a thirty minute briefing? This frustrated Jace to no end, because everyone else was already familiar with the details. They were all here because Jon specifically requested it. Not wanting to waste anyone else's time, he decided to cut the meeting short. After all, the only thing left to be decided was the brand's name. Not surprisingly, Lily had already remedied the problem. Before he could dismiss everyone, she got up and joined him at the front. She passed out a few sheets with the name Aura stylized in a blue font, with an illustrated icon of a Peony. Jace was more than pleased by this, once she explained that she meant to give tribute to his late mother, Aurelia Avery. Although Jace wasn't sure what his father would think, he would accept it. He had high hopes that the Femme line would be completely replaced, and so far they were making great headway with their collective ideas. His brother however, seemed none too impressed, and neither did their newest attendee. Jace hadn't noticed at first, but Siu had been watching closely outside the glass door. She wore the same red pea coat that she had stormed out of his apartment with, and the painful scene began to replay in his mind. She looked back and forth at him and Lily, and for the moment, Jace went back to feeling uncomfortable. He couldn't figure out why she was here, or how she knew about the meeting. She never came to the building unannounced, and the scornful look on her face spelled trouble. As everyone dispersed, only Jon remained seated, as if waiting for something. Not wanting to have an argument, Jace got his things, and was ready to make a quick exit. He had no intention of lingering here, and what little fun he had with Lily could wait to be discussed. Before he could make an escape, Siu met him halfway, and approached him with fire in her red tinged eyes. He thought her to be the most beautiful woman on the planet only a few weeks ago, but now the crinkled eyebrows, and the hateful glare in her eyes just made her scary. "So it's all true, isn't it?" she snapped at him. "I saw the way you were looking at her. I can't believe you!" "Listen to me, this isn't the place or the time." Jace said in a lowered voice. "If you wanna talk, we'll do it when you're calm." "You can't tell me what to do, or how to feel Jace. Jon was right about you and her!" Jace frowned and looked to his brother who had gotten up, and joined Siu at her side. He put his hand on her shoulder, and Siu cozied up to him as if she was a frightened little animal seeking refuge in the arms of her protector. But all Jace saw was a slithering snake that had manipulated the one woman he was meant to have a future with. Jace only saw red now. He didn't see Lily, Richard, or Siu anymore. All he saw was his brother's smugness. He took a hard swing, and his clenched fist met with his brother's face. Caught off guard, Jon fell back and landed on the floor, cupping his sore jaw. Richard who had been standing at the door's entrance, saw everything and rushed in to restrain Jace. "You fucking asshole!" Jace grunted; still trying to break out of Richard's lock. "Calm down Jay!" Richard urged, and tried to push him out the door, passed the concerned bodies rushing to Jon's aid. "We need to get you out of here!" "What the hell happened to you?" Siu screamed back at him accusingly. "Did she change you so much that you attack your own brother dead on?" Jace shot her an angry look, but was shoved full force into the hallway. After that, everything went blank. He wasn't aware of who was with him, where they were going, or even what was being said to, or about him. He only knew that the next time he saw Jon, he would surely kick his ass, and do more damage. The bastard was the one spreading the rumors, and causing disarray in his life. He should have known, but he thought that Jon still had some decency left in him. He knew what was next. His father would find out about the commotion, and come down on him for it. He would even bet that Walter already knew what Jon was doing, but didn't think to say a word to him about it. At this point he couldn't understand either of their motives. He had never given Siu cause to distrust him, but sly words from his brother, one who had known him since childhood, would probably convince her that he wasn't an honest man. Either way, it didn't really matter. They could both go to hell. Once sense came back to him, he found himself in the ground floor's lobby, and Richard was with him. This area too was as beautifully designed as the rest of the inner tower, with the same polished floors and glittering displays. The only exception was that there were tiny, crimson, plush couches lining the various corners. It was all glorious to look at, but he didn't want to see any of it. He didn't want to be in a place that constantly reminded him of Jon. "What happened in there?" Richard asked, and sat down next to him. Jace didn't answer. Disheveled and a little confused, he slugged back against his seat, and cradled his reddened knuckles. His hand throbbed with pain, and he would need an ice pack soon. But that was the least of his worries. "It was him this whole time." Jace finally said. "He's the one who's been spreading lies about me." Richard gave him a pitying look and sighed, "I'm sorry Jay. He's your brother, but he treats you like a fucking step child. What the hell happened between the two of you anyway?" He had never told Richard about what tore them apart. Any knowledge of family disagreements had always been limited to those involved. This didn't mean that he distrusted Richard of course. Like it or not, he and his family were in the public eye, and Walter preferred privacy and discretion. He might even banish talk of the recent fight by threatening those present with demotion. "It's personal; a family issue." Jace answered after some thought. "Besides, I don't want to talk about it." "Trust me, I know how family can get...but this is on another level. Siu took this to the workplace, and now everyone will be talking. No doubt the old man will be pissed about it." "I don't care about that. I'm not the messed up person they paint me to be. What's most fucked up is that she believes that I am." he responded, referring to his now ex-girlfriend. "Give her some slack. Maybe she just needed more time with you. You know how women are when you're a workaholic." "More time? It's nearly two years since we've been together. I always tried with her, even with all my other responsibilities. I took care of her, and she was about to move in with me." "Hey, I hear you! Women are a mystery to me, so I can't help you there. Come on, let's get outta here before we run into them again. I don't think I'd hold you back a second time. Buy you a drink? Never too early when you're dealing with bullshit, right?" "Sure. Why not?" Jace sighed. They drove to Kyōgoku, a sushi bar on the upper east side of the city. Along with a myriad of colorful rolls, Jace also ordered a bucket of ice to tranquilize the pain in his hand. It had swelled a bit since the beginning of their drive. He was too angry to eat, so he only downed a few cups of sake to calm him, while Richard ate his fill. He suddenly realized that in all the commotion, he had totally forgotten about Lily. The tiny remote in his pocket was still there; now cold without his touch. While Richard finished a bite of a Sashimi, Jace asked, "Did you see Lily after you pulled me out of there?" "So there's really nothing going on between you two?" Richard countered with a grin. Jace sighed, aware that he couldn't dodge the question any longer. "Well...there wasn't, but now..." "No kidding?! You and Lily huh?" Richard answered with a hint of amazement. "I never would've guessed. I know you two were good friends, but I never thought it would go beyond that." "Neither did I. I never looked at her in that way. It wasn't until after Siu started acting funny that I...uh..." Richard stared at him wide eyed. "So you guys got hot and heavy?" "Hard to picture?" Jace asked with a tiny smile. "Well she's not the type I thought you were into." Richard said frankly. "Why? Because she's black?" "Yeah, that's what initially comes to mind. I guess there was no delicate way to say it. That, and you've always liked petite women. Maybe I should be more adventurous like you, and break out of my usual dating habits." and Richard winked at him. "I wouldn't call this adventurous. I cared more about the person she was. Besides you, I trust her more than family." "So if you're worried, why not call to see how she is? Maybe she's waiting to hear from you." Jace grew silent. Lily had never seen him this angry before. No one had, except for Jon. To some extent, even he had been surprised by his own reaction. Normally, he chose to hold off on any angry responses when provoked, but something had changed in him. He had always been the calm one, and the pacifist; very much like his mother. But now he didn't know who he was anymore. He imagined that both Siu and Lily would be angry with him, so he could go to neither of them now. She had witnessed his reaction, which gave away his remaining feelings for Siu. But of course he cared. Just last month he had casually discussed a possible engagement, insinuated by her father. Now everything had been turned upside down. Maybe he still wanted Siu back, despite her betrayal. Could anyone blame him? It was painful to be without her, but the other half of him also wanted Lily, and the promise of new experiences that came with her. He didn't know how to approach either of them at the moment, and felt hopeless. Richard now looked as if he had been contagiously seized by Jace's melancholy, and stopped eating. "I'm just trying to help Jay." he said. "I'm sure that if you confronted both your brother and Siu, laid down some rules, and had him confess that he was looking to sabotage your relationship, things would get patched up. She'd probably take you back, and all would be forgiven." "Forgiven?" Jace frowned. "I didn't do anything wrong here! Why does everyone side with her, and think that I'm the one who started this crap?"
