Now I hate endings, because I feel like there could always be more for my characters. But sadly, at the end of the day everything has to end. I've so enjoyed writing this story and hearing from all you readers. I hope you like the ending! -S *** Day groaned as pain cut a deep into his side. All around him were loud noises, things he subconsciously recognized but was failing to grasp at the moment. As if from a distance he heard a crisp and sharp voice issuing orders, but he couldn't make out exactly what was going on. The pain in his side increased as he felt something cold and metal touch his skin obviously trying to remove whatever was causing him the pain. Finally the pressure was relieved, and with it gone came a tired feeling, as if all he energy was flowing out of him. Day was tired, so very tired. The voices around him became louder, urgent as sleep tugged insistently at him. Day tried to open his mouth to speak tell them everything was fine and that he just needed a nap, but everything felt heavily, he couldn't even keep his lids open anymore. I just needed a little nap, something small, and then I'll be better, Day thought exhausted. "We're losing him!" Day could hear someone say, and the words startling him a bit. Trying to fight through layers of sleep, Day valiantly tried to surface, to remember why he couldn't fall asleep. What was so important that he couldn't give in? What did he need to fight for? The answer came with the pain, as he screamed into the busy operating room and continued on living. Chapter 51 Beth was having a crazy dream which involved Bugs Bunny and giant carrots. "What's up doc?" Bugs said to her, sitting high on top of a giant carrot and making Beth stretch her neck up to see him. He was wearing a doc's coat with a stethoscope around his neck and chewing on a carrot. Suddenly under her feet the carrots began to grow, pushing her up to where Bugs was, so they were eye level but still separated. "You should eat more carrots doc. Carrots and cake and cookies! Eat anything you want!" Bugs screamed at Beth, making her want to cover her ears. Then out of thin air a clipboard appeared in one hand, and he looked down while chewing the carrot before looking back at her, and suddenly Beth was anxious. What did the clip board say? Despite it being a dream there was something important here, something she was missing. Bugs looked up from the clip board and his mouth moved as if he was talking but no sound came out, he smiled and tossed the clip board at her, but then she was falling, trying to see the clip board, but she couldn't. "Bugs bunny was swimming towards her, smiling and chanting: "Its time to wake up! It's time to wake up Beth!" Beth ignored him, trying to grasp the clip board, but every time she got close, it slipped out of her fingers. Then Bugs was directly in front of her, his arms wrapped around her, the clip board getting farther away from her. "Its time to wake up Beth, we need you!" It wasn't Bugs voice, it was her fathers! Beth's eyes popped open to see an extremely sterile looking hospital room with her parents sitting beside her on the bed, her fathers arms wrapped around her. "She's awake!" Beth heard her mother exclaim before another set of arms wrapped around her. Then everything came flooding back, the fabulous night of sex, the tesla, the crash. Beth cried out as she hugged her parents back, the small amount of pain she felt from doing so insignificant when faced with the fact that she'd almost died. "I'm glad to see you up and moving, I'm Dr.Galloway. How are you feeling?" A female doctor said as she strode into the room, her hair pulled back from her face and an expression of exhaustion marring her features. "Better, thank you doctor." Beth said as her parents released her and she settled back on the bed. "Of course dear!" The doctor said absently, grabbing a chart at the end of the bed and flipping through it. "Well, everything seems good. We'll probably just keep you a few more days to make sure there aren't any complications with your pregnancy. We might be out of the red zone, but the fetus is still in the early stages and we wouldn't want you to lose it." Doctor Galloway said smiling and, patting the bed in a show of comfort. "I'll see you later than dear. If you need anything just let one of the nurses know." ANd with that the doctor breezed out of the room as quickly as she'd come in. Beth sat there frozen, as her mother gaped like a fish out of water and her father stared after the doctor completely perplexed. "What?" Beth whispered, finally coming out of her shock. Turning to the door she waited to see if the doctor would come back and explain, when it didn't look like that was going to happen Beth got angry. "Get the fuck back here! I'm not pregnant! I can't be!" Beth screamed, as a nurse ran into the room. Pregnant? Beth thought as the nurse checked her and bombarded her with questions. I'm pregnant? Beth thought, her eyes glazing over. Holly shit, I'm pregnant! Chapter 52 One minute Day was sleeping peacefully and the next he as wide awake and panicking. "Where's Beth? Brian?" Day screamed as he shot up in bed, his body protesting painfully and some of his stitches re-opening. "Shit!" Day trained forcing his body back. Ricky was by his side instantly, hitting an intercom button to get a nurse. "He's awake!" Ashley was right beside him, smiling through watery eyes. "Hey boss man, glad to see you're up." Day's vision seam as his room was suddenly bombarded with nurses and doctors. "Beth? Brian?" Day whispered fiercely, trying to work through the pain. "They're fine. Everyone's fine. Brian's been with Beth and her parents since she woke up." Ashley answered for somewhere in the room as a doctor proceeded to poke and prod him. Man I feel like shit run over. Day thought as a doctor began to ask him a series of questions. Day answered them as best he could, but after several Mingus of it his patience was wearing thin and be just wanted to see Beth. Not only that but holding a conversation was taking too much of his energy, energy which could be spent finding Beth and Brian and making sure they were alright. "Out." Day whispered lowly in the room. When no one seemed to hear him, or didn't care, he popped his eyes open and stared down each person. "I said get the fuck out!" He thundered at the hospital staff, watching them scurry out of the room. One doctor had the ball to try and protest, giving Day some bullshit excuse about his health and rest, but Day was having none of it. "Get the fuck out or lose my funding; your choice." Day growled out violently, clutching onto the side of the hospital bed as if he might leap up and attack the doctor. The man visibly paled before tripping over his own feet and slamming the door closed behind him. Day still knew that Ashley and Ricky were in the corner of the room watching him, but wisely choosing to remain silent. Their presence gave him a measure of comfort as he struggled to sit up and swing his legs out of the bed. Putting most of his wait of the bed side table, Day tried valiantly to stand, but his legs shock too badly. Ricky was there in a second, lending silent support. "I'm going to see Beth." Day stated, as Ricky helped him walk to the door. "You're a fucking idiot Day!" Ashley breathed into the room as she rushed to hold the door open for the men. It wasn't an easy trek down the hall and around the corner to Beth's room, but it was one Day would do a thousands time over if the result would always be him seeing his health and happy family. Finally they reached the door, and Ashley stepped into the room holding it wide. Day stared at the ground, trying to force his feet to move as he entered the room. "Day!" He heard Beth gasp his name, his head turning instantly towards the sound of her voice. Beautiful in a pool of light, Beth sat upright on a hospital bed with Brian curled in her lap, asleep. THe seen left him speechless, and with a burst of strength he pushed off Ricky and stumbled the last few feet towards her bed. Beth immediately moved over as Day climbed on, pulling her against him, and cuddling her to his chest. He blocked out the pain in his side, as her cried grateful tears into her fiery locks. "Day, be gentle." Day heard Beth's muffled whisper against his chest as he gently pulled back and looked her over for any noticeable wounds or signs of pain. Day watched Beth shake her head as she grasped his hand and pulled it to her stomach. "We have to be careful." She said quietly, meaningfully. "Are you-" Day chocked on the words, moisture gathering in his eyes, as he became overwhelmed. Beth smiled back at him through her own tears. "We're having a baby Darius! We're starting a family!" Beth gushed, as Day gathered her once again into the safety of his arms. Everything Day had ever wanted was wrapped in his arms, crying softly onto his chest, and tugging insistently at his arm. Beth and Brian were his everything-no, that wasn't right; Beth, Brian, and their new baby were his everything. Chapter 53 Whistling a cheery tune, and blissfuly happy, Beth folded the matching set of baby overalls and tucked them neatly into the tiny baby blue dresser. After leaving the doctors office that morning, Beth had been bit by the shopping bug and had gone on a frenzy trying to fill up the baby room in their lavish pent house apartment. A while back Day had asked her if she wanted to move to a house further away from the city, but she was glad she hadn't. She'd grown to love the ridiculously huge apartment and was over joyed that it would be her children's first home. Yes, children! Twins! Beth thought excitedly as she hugged the tiny sweater she had grabbed to fold close to her chest. I can't believe I'm having twins! The news had come as a great shock when at 12 weeks pregnant the doctor had said that her HCG levels looked a tinny bit high and that they had to run a test. The conclusion: she was pregnant with healthy twins, the ultra sound the preformed confirming the sound of three heart beats, hers and her two babies. Smiling softly, Beth folded the sweaters as she thought of Day, the man she loved with all her heart. This had been the first doctor's appointment Day hadn't gone with her to. In fact this had been the first Day that she hadn't felt Day's presence around her in some way, either with his own presence, the yards or his insistent phone call every two seconds. The man had been with her what felt like every second since the accident, but she couldn't really complain, all the attention just reminded her that she was loved. Even now she could still remember the days when Jason had barely every glanced at her, barely even spoken to her. If Day was smothering her a bit, Beth wouldn't admit it, because she knew how the other side of the fence felt. Beth smiled, as she waddled over to the rocking chair and sat down heavily. Life had been changing so dramatically over these past few months that they hadn't been able to do much other than get out of the hospital and start preparing for the baby, well, babies. But Day didn't know yet, and since Beth had finished her sudden bout of shopping she'd decided to make diner. A roast was in the over, potatoes were on the stove and the makings of a cheese cake were in the frig. It was no wonder she was exhausted! Even more recently Day had been pressing her to quit her job. In all reality Beth really didn't need it, she could always help Day out with the company, which is what he had suggested anyway, but for some reason she was loath to let go of her job. That probably had something to do with it being the only thing in her life Day didn't have his hands in, but hell would freeze over before she admitted it to anyone! Still he wanted her to quit, and take care of the babies and do what she wanted to do. Wether that was work at the company in certain areas or just become a philanthropist. He'd given her a wide berth and it was only a matter of time before she agreed. Already she was secretly grooming a colleague for her position. Not that she even went to work anymore, because the constant doctors visits and what not kind of made it impossible. But sooner or later she'd leave her job and do what Day wanted, or so she'd let him think. Rubbing her overly large stomach, she yawned and cooed softly at her children. All her friends had remarked that she looked bigger than was normal, but she didn't really know and neither did Day because Shontell had never been pregnant. To the two of them everything looked fine, she was looking like every other pregnant woman out there. In fact all of her symptoms had been like everything she'd heard: constantly tired, hungry, weird cravings, mood swings, the works. The only thing that hadn't been normal was her constant need to have sex; horny didn't even begin to describe how she felt 90 percent of the time. In all honesty she was starting to actually wear Day out, and that little thought made Beth chuckle dangerously to herself. "Hmm... I think I'll get a little nap before Day gets home." Beth muttered to her stomach, as she silently added in her head; and I accost him. Moving to rise, Beth moved out of the room, quickly checking the roast and the potatoes. The potatoes were done and she drained them before placing them back on the stove so she could get to them later. Stifling another yawn Beth moved up the stairs to the bedrooms, still amazed by the size of the apartment. Rubbing her stomach Beth smiled and cooed sweet nothings. Talking to herself, or rather the babies, had become a sort of habit lately, but Ty said it was perfectly normal. Ty'd been a great support over the last few weeks, just like Ashley and the rest. Surprisingly the woman Aiesha, that she'd met from the fundraiser had sent a gift basket with all sorts of baby goodies. The woman was truly a kind and generous person and Beth had sent her back a thank you card, with a sincere thank you. "I can't wait to tell your daddy the good news. You think he'll be happy?" Beth asked her stomach around a yawn, as she pulled back the blankets and crawled into their bed. Turning she set her alarm for 30 minutes later, plenty of time for a quick nap! Chapter 54 Day had just finished work, and was more than excited to get home. It's gonna be tonight! It's gonna be tonight! He chanted in his head, as he got up to get his coat and heard Ricky enter his office. "You gonna finally give it to her?" Ricky asked causally as he shrugged on his coat and went about turning off the lights. Day sent Ricky a cheshire cat smile as he flipped his collar around. First he fell in love with an incredible woman, then he let her into his home, now she was carrying his child, and with one small question she would be his. For some reason the memory of his dead wife was stopping him from creating new memories with the woman he hoped would be his new wife. Day was so deep in thought that he hadn't even realized that Ricky was standing next to him, until Ricky clapped him on the shoulder. "Come on man, don't think so hard! You're going to hurt something! " Ricky said with a laugh. Day turned to his assistant, who over the past few months had become more like a best friend to him, and rolled his eyes. "Yeah; thanks Ricky. Oh and don't give Brian any fucking junk food. Last time he came home, he was bouncing off the fucking walls!" *** Stepping off the elevator of their apartment building, Day practically ran to the front door, keys already in hand. With a deft flick of his wrist the lock gave and he ended into their apartment, the spell of a home cooked meal wafting enticingly to him. "Beth!" Day called out as he shrugged out of his jacket reaching for the small velvet box before he threw it over a chair, striding into the kitchen. "In here!" Beth called back from the dinning room, sounding like barely suppressed excitement. You love her! Day remind himself. She won't say no. So stop pussy-footing around and just ask her already! Day gathered all of his courage and forced himself to enter the dinning room. "Fuck Beth!" Day gasped as he entered. Beth smiled sweetly at him before coming to grab his hand and lead him to the dinning room table; the beautifully set and filled with enough food to fill a small village dinning room table. His mouth watered as he looked at the giant roast and various mouth watering sides displayed on the table. "I take it you approve?" Beth said with a light laugh as he felt her push him into the chair. On instinct his arm reached out and caught her around the waist. "You did all of this? For me? Pregnant?" Day almost squeaked, his eyes roaming her distended stomach as if because she was pregnant she couldn't possibly stand up without assistance, let alone make a beautiful feast for him. Day looked at her like he was lost, and maybe he was. He'd been lost without Beth, struggling to be a good single parents, struggling with Shontell's grief, struggling with his company. It was a pattern of struggling, falling, then getting up and struggling again. But then Beth had come sauntering down the street in the middle of the night and suddenly his world had been turned upside down and now he couldn't struggle, because she wouldn't let him. Her light, her problems, they found ways to resolve them together, as a team. He helped her put away her demons and she did the same for him, so that he didn't have to struggle through his life. He could live it, with her. "Day," Beth began gentle as she finally settled herself on his lap and began to fill his plate. "Just because I'm pregnant with your childr-child, doesn't mean that I can't do things on my own. Women have been doing it for centuries, and none of them had guard, or over protectives husbands who thought they couldn't pick up their own purse. Now will you eat! It took me a freaking long time to make it all and everything is getting cold." Beth said softly with steel lacing her voice as she stabbed a piece of roast and held it out to him to eat. Day smirked up at her as he obediently opened his mouth and let her feed him. Ever since Jason had hit them and was then arrested Beth had gone from strong to unbreakable. She'd testified against Jason, with the kind of steadfast conviction tha Day wasn't even sure he had. And instead of letting Jason rile her up, she'd been calm, composed, and as cold as ice on the stand. Day leaned further back in his chair as he settled into being fed. He didn't want to spend the evening dwelling on the past; he wanted to spend it working towards their future. "Beth I-" he began as he saw her place the fork down. "Day there's-" She said at the same time. Beth smiled at him, and gestured for him to start first. Deep breath. Remember, you love her and that's all that matters! Day said over and over in his head as he slowly moved Beth off his lap and rose up in the chair. They stared at each other for a moment, before Day quickly dropped to one knee, ringing a surprised gasp from Beth. "Beth I- fuck, you know i'm terrible at words." Day mumbled as he heard Beth's throaty laugh. "Elizabeth McNash, will you do me the honor of being my wife?" Day asked formally as he reached into his pants pocket and pulled out the small velvet box. Taking a breath, Day opened the box and presented the ring to Beth, waiting for her reply. All in all she looked stunned, like she hadn't been expecting it. Shit! I fucked this up! Day thought as he watched tears begin to stream down her face. "Awh shit! Beth I'm sorry I-" "Twins" Day heard Beth whisper shakily. Day rubbed the back of his neck, not exactly sure how to take that. "So is that like code for something? Like maybe a yes?" Day asked wryly, a smile twisting his lips because she hadn't said no. Flirting the Fence Ch. 50-Final "No..." He heard Beth begin, and his grin dropped and his expression soured. He was just about to- well, he didn't know what he was about to do, when she finished. "It means that we are having twins." Beth said softly. Day's knee began to hurt, so he got up, the reality of her words penetrating. "You're having two babies?" "Yes! Yes!" Beth yelled excitedly as she threw herself into his arms. Day blocked back in surprise, not exactly sure what happened. Beth was laughing and crying and talking and Day couldn't exactly hear what she was saying. "I was g-going to tell you... before... but then-and now... yes! I-I love you Day, adn my hormones are doing crazy things to my brain-and I love you and yes!" Day rushed out as she drew back from him. This crazy, crying, beautiful woman was his. And she was having his babies. Babies. And she was going to marry him. Day's mind went in circles, and he thought maybe some of her hormones were rubbing off in him. "I love you so much Beth." Day said clearly, fighting back his own slew of emotions. Slowly he side the ring from the case and then onto her finger. "We're having twins and we're getting married." Day said with finality, as everything in his life seemed to settle into place. "I'm so glad you found me!" Beth whispered against his lips. So am I. Day thought loudly in his head as he devoured her mouth. So am I. Chapter 55 Beth looked over her wedding reception as Day danced with Ashley and Ricky glowered at the two. The wedding had been perfect, if a little hectic and stressful with her being just about ready to pop. Still, despite her exhaustion, and the fact that she just wanted to drop dead and sleep everything had been absolutely perfect and she would stay up for however long it took until the reception ended. "Hey honey!" Beth's mom said behind her, wrapping Beth in a fragrant, exuberant hug. She squeezed her mom's arm back, as the woman turned and sat on the other side of her, quite a bit of alcohol loosing her tongue and making her smile uncontrollably. "How're you holding up? You look like you might fall asleep in your chair." Beth smiled, and patted her mother's hand reassuringly. "I'm fine. A little tired, a little hungry, but that's my new normal." Beth said with a smile as she absently stroked her stomach. Her mother smiled and made noises of understanding before bending to coo at Beth's stomach and her grandchildren. Beth smiled at her slightly tipsy mother as she turned back to watch Day and Ashely burn up the dance floor. Day caught her watching him and gave her a slight wave, while all but sticking his tongue out at Ricky who looked angry enough to chew glass. Not two seconds later Ricky cut in and twirled Ashley away from DAy, much to Day's amusement. Beth laughed at the scene, happy to see everyone having a good time. "So you're happy with... everything?" Her mother asked, pulling back from her stomach to look at her with a slightly glazed expression. Beth thought on that for a minute while she waved at her old boss and his wife, who'd been unexpectedly kind and understanding about her circumstances. Beth returned to the question; it wasn't as if her mother had been he top supporter of Day, but neither had she really meant any harm by her actions. Her mom was just selfish, that was just one of her characteristics. But Beth knew what she was asking nonetheless; was she happy with the choices she'd had in her life so far? "Yes. The good and the bad." Beth said solemnly looking directly into her mother's eyes while adding mental; I'm grateful for all of it because it brought me to this point and made me stronger. It was the truth; she didn't regret any of her decisions. The time that Jason had shown his true colors, the moment that she'd indulged in dangerous behavior, the night she'd nearly been raped, all of it! She loved all of it, because it had all brought her to this point, to her life with Day and Brain and the children growing inside of her. It was that demarcation line, of her life before Day and her life after him. She'd been glass encased in rock before she met Day, but when that layer of stone had been chipped away and ultimately broken, she'd shattered. And as much as she'd struggled to find the glass and put herself back together, she had to realize that she would always have that impediment if she went back to the way things were, back to being easily broken glass. So she'd forged her own self, she'd sharped the glass with the rocks, she'd broken it all again, and then she'd melded it together, so it could never break again, so that she was stronger for her weaknesses and her strengthens. "Beth?" She heard her mother calling her back. Gently Beth smiled at her mother, resting hand on her stomach as she watched Day striding over to her. "I've been thinking a lot mother," Beth began as she made a move to rise. "I'm not lost anymore. I've found a place for my heart and soul can call home. So I don't care that it's been a hard journey to get here. I'm just happy that i'm here and have it." Beth watched her mother shake her head, a quiet smile playing on her lips as she had a move to rise too. Leaning forward she kissed her daughter on the cheek; "You always were such a romantic." "I thought I was a realists?" Beth asked with a smile as she felt Day wrap his arms around her from behind. Her mother just shook her head and wobbled off. Beth shook her head at her mother who probably wouldn't even remember their conversation come the morning. Turning around, she reached up to wind her hands around his neck; "So Mr.West what do you want to do now?" Day smiled, and leaned down to gently kiss her lips; "Well Mrs.West, I can think of a number of things I want to do, but what I need to do is get you home and tucked into bed so you can get some rest. I can see your exhausted Beth." Day said pointedly. He'd grown too, Beth realized as she looked into his eyes, darker than they normally were and no longer that leather hue, but something deeper. He'd gentled, let go of his past and opened up his heart. "I'm ready." Beth said, the words loaded with meaning. But Day understood; he always did. There was an invisible tether between them, connecting them. "So am I, love. Let's start our life together!" Day whispered, bending to grab her hand and kiss the ring he'd placed on it only hours ago. Yes, Beth thought smiling brightly, and wrapping her arms around his neck to kiss him with all her heart and love. *I hope you all liked it.
