In one corner, a king-sized, four-poster bed stood, inviting her to lay her weary body down. The floor was covered in beautiful throw rugs. Four armchairs were situated around the room artfully. In another corner, an armoire stood with its doors open, revealing the deep hanging space with gowns hung tidily up. Satisfied, she turned to the two beside her. "Oh, Marikay! It must have taken you forever to learn to do that," eighteen-year-old Linaross said in awe. "How do you do it so well?" "I concentrated on that feeling inside me. The one that's unlike any other feelings so that you can feel its power. You just sort of grab and use it. Everyone has it, just most don't know how to use it," Marikay answered, smiling. She brushed her long, dark blonde hair out of her face and turned violet eyes on Linaross's adopted brother, Topain. "Do you need some more help Topain?" she asked the twenty-year-old. Topain sneered and shook his head. He flicked his eyes toward the room and changed it back to its bare state. Then instantly, it was furnished again, only more elaborately. He tried to hide the flicker of fatigue that crossed his handsome, sculpted features, but Marikay caught it. "Topain, if it tires you out to conjure, maybe you should start out small? Not furnish my room just to show that you can do it better than I can. I have had years of practice. You and Lina have had only a few months. This knowledge is a gift, don't abuse it. If you do, you'll lose this ability and the thought reading ability. You may be heir to the throne, but that doesn't mean you can purposefully disobey me. You're father gave me full reign to do what I felt is needed to make sure you learn this," she lectured. Topain's sneer only got more spiteful and he stormed out of the room, cutting her off in the middle of it. As soon as he was out of the room, Linaross relaxed visibly. "I can't do this anymore Lina. I'm so tempted to leave. I would if it wasn't for you and your quickness and eagerness to learn. It's so hard to teach him, even though he is heir to the throne, he acts like a spoiled disobedient child!" Marikay said. Marikay tightened her lips and closed her eyes. Almost immediately, Linaross left the room and her mentor. Running swiftly to the throne room, she dreaded what she had to do. The attentive guard nodded her in the instant he recognized her. Running across the large throne room, she skidded to a halt at the edge of the throne dais. She fought to avoid her mother's judging eyes. Falling to her knees, she bowed her head and gasped out, "Dearest Mother, Honorable Father, I bring you news of Marikay and Topain." "Speak Lina, and get up. You are a princess, act like it. A princess does not grovel except before her father when she has done something wrong. Which I'm sure you have not," Linaross's mother said. Linaross stood and looked into the kind green eyes of King Paintin. Purposefully, she avoided Queen Shelakay's brown gaze. "Dear Father, Marikay is thinking of resigning her position as tutor to Prince Topain and me. She told me she could not teach disobedient heirs who refuse to cooperate." "That's the third one in two months Shelakay. What are we going to do about Topain? If he doesn't learn how to behave he will never be a good king and my duty is to make sure my heir will rule as well and as fair as I have," Paintin said to his wife, his brow furrowed in concern. Shelakay laid a hand on her beloved's arm and opened her mouth to speak before another voice cut her off. "And what does that mean Paintin? That you will give your precious kingdom to Linaross here? Your bastard with a peasant woman? Do you honestly think that the kingdom will accept that?" Linaross turned sharply, dread rising to grab her by the throat. Leaning casually on a marble column, Topain regarded them coldly. Pushing away from the column, he walked over to them. He avoided Linaross's eyes and instead glared at his mother and father. "They won't and you know it. So you are stuck with me whether you like it or not." "Topain, apologize to your sister and father. First of all, you know that your sister is adopted into this family and we do not know who her father is. Second of all, treat you father with respect, call him Father, not Paintin," Shelakay snapped, standing in one quick fluid motion. She stepped down to where Linaross and Topain stood. "You don't deserve this and until you can, Lina will be heir," she added, snatching his silver crown from his brown curls. He stared at her shocked, then stormed from the throne room. Linaross stared at Shelakay as the older woman came down from the throne dais. "You are now heir Lina. Don't abuse the privilege like Topain did." Placing the crown, to signify her rank on her adopted daughter's blond hair, she smiled grimly. "You are our last hope Lina...please, be more than a princess, and be a perfect heir. This means being all that you hate." "Yes Mother," Linaross whispered, then, dismissed, turned and walked out of the throne room. As soon as she was out of sight, she picked up her skirts and ran toward the stables. Summoning a stableman, she signaled for him to saddle Milky, her large, white stallion. She petted his velvety nose, giggling as he nudged closer, looking for treats. After pampering the large horse for a few minutes, she mounted, then turned him toward the main road. "Go Milky...go!" she murmured into his ear. Instantly, the horse took off, flying down the road, sending Linaross's honey colored hair flying out behind her, coming out of the proper upsweep Shelakay demanded she wear. She laughed out loud as she bent over him, murmuring words of encouragement. Finally, without any directions from her, he slowed, and then turned off the road, following a path into the forest. Linaross straightened, out of breath, as they came to a small clearing about half a mile from the main road. Sliding off Milky, she tied his reins to a sapling, letting him tear up mouthfuls of tender clover and new grass. Then she sat down by the small river that ran through the clearing making the clearing peaceful and tranquil. Staring into the moving water, she felt her hair fall forward, held back only by the crown. Sighing, she slipped the surprisinly light piece off her head and placed it on the ground beside her. "Oh Mother, why did you have to go and die? Why did you beg the king to take me in and raise me as his?" she moaned aloud, beseeching her birth mother to answer her. "You know she won't answer Lina. She is dead. Has been dead for years. Why do you insist on talking to her?" Startled, Linaross turned, her heart going cold. Seated on a chestnut mare was Topain. He looked down at her, smiling. "What do you want? To torture me more?" she cried, paling as she cringed away from him. "No. Torture is far from what I have in mind...I only wanted to wish you a happy birthday," Topain said as he slid from the horse. He tied the mare next to Milky and walked over to her. He towered over her five foot two form by a good foot, but she stared him down, masking the fear in her eyes. When his mind tried to touch hers, mental blocks stopped him, something she would never have used on him before. He grimaced at this symbol of her fear and dislike of him. "Thank you Topain. But I know you are here for another reason. What?" she asked, her blue eyes shielded as well. He reached out to touch her then gathered her in his arms with a strangled oath. "Shithell Lina...I love you. I miss you, need you. I know I have been acting like a jackass these last few months, but I was scared after we were together. I was worried you wouldn't want me or love me anymore. Please forgive me," he whispered into her hair, his voice tortured. He felt her stiffen when he had first touched her, but relax slowly as he talked. Her hands slid around him, holding him close. "Do you really love me?" "Of course, haven't I told you that before?" "No." "I thought I had Lina. I must have shown it tons of times. If not, I am terribly-" She stopped him by placing her finger over his mouth, her mind opening to his again so he could feel her joy and happiness. His heart swelled and he lowered his lips to hers. The second his mouth brushed over hers, she melted, her arms sliding up around his neck, pulling him down closer. He lifted her in his arms, and then laid her down on a bed of soft moss. Then he broke the kiss, smiling at her whimper of protest. "So you did miss me," he whispered. Then his eyes roamed over her petite body, so perfectly formed it took his breath away. From her golden curls lying over the bright green moss, to her glazed blue eyes and her full pouting, red mouth. From her full breasts, heaving beneath her lace bodice, which revealed the first swell of her breasts, to her thin waist, which needed no corset, to her shapely legs, hidden by the long folds of her gown. She was his and he loved her. "You are so beautiful," he breathed before leaning down to kiss her again. She pulled him over her, one of her delicate hands slipping down the length of his body. He tensed, delighting in her soft touch. He deepened the kiss, showing her again how to respond more by tilting her head to better receive his kiss. Finally, he pulled away when her hand cupped his hardness through his breeches. He moaned when her fingers started caressing him tentatively. His fingers tangled in her hair, as he kissed her again. "Don't stop," he murmured against her mouth. Her touch grew more confident as he shifted over her, bracing his weight on his elbows. His gaze traveled over her silk clad form, making her heat under him. Slowly, giving her time to say no, he started to push the scalloped bodice of her gown down, baring her full breasts to his hungry eyes. But instead of resisting, her free hand captured his and placed it over one enticing mound. Her blue eyes were filled with passion, desire, and need, driving him crazy. "Oh Topain, of course I missed you. How could I not? After what we have been through? After what happened that night. What happened?" she asked her voice soft and musical. "Nothing." "Don't lie to me...Something went wrong. Did I do something?" she said, and then moaned in pleasure. For even as they talked, he had been caressing her breast, making the nipple harden under his warm palm. "No!" he exclaimed, stopping, his eyes widening for emphasis. "It wasn't you. It was I, I was scared. And Prince Adarin tried to turn me against you. I don't know why though. But it worked, feeding me the lie that you were my half sister, making me hate how I felt about you. Doubting my father and myself. So I tried to make you hate me, so that I wouldn't feel like a jerk whenever you looked at me with those blue eyes so full of love. Instead I turned that love to pain...and that hurt more than anything else did," he finished, dropping a kiss on her eyelids. Then to his dismay, a tear fell down her cheek. He kissed it away, and then held her close. "But why Topain, why? Mother and Daddy are half brother and sister, and look at how the world accepted them. I see no reason why they would not be as accepting, if not more, of you marrying me, your adopted sister," she asked, distress in her eyes, replacing the desire. "Adarin told me it was wrong, that Mother and Father were wrong in marrying and having me. I believed the son of an ass for some reason. Shitfire, if I couldn't stop loving you, then I was determined to make you stop loving me. But I couldn't do it. And after I lost the title today, I went to see Adarin, and he refused to see me. That is when I knew he had been playing me for the fool. He had got what he wanted; now he had no more need for me. Only problem was, I couldn't figure out why he wanted us apart," he said. Then a terrible thought crossed his mind and he shuddered. But he didn't voice his fear, fearing it would come true if he did. "I don't know. But kiss me again love, hurry. Let's put this all behind us. I love you too much to think of another man. Just kiss me..." she murmured in his ear, pulling his mouth to hers. He kissed her tenderly and pulled her even closer. Her golden hair tangled around his fingers as he cupped her head to allow control over the kiss. He caught her moan in his mouth as his other hand cupped her breast again. The hard nipple grazed his palm, sending a shot of something close to lightening down his body. It pooled below his belt line, threatening his self-control. "Oh Gods Lina, I want you so bad, want you under me, moving with me...I want to be inside you, loving you. Lina, Lina," he whispered against her mouth, covering her pliant body with his hard one. She strained against him, her body demanding him inside her even as her eyes denied him. She shook her head, closing her eyes to block out the plea in his eyes, though her body betrayed her remembered pain and arched against him, her hands drawing him down over her. "Topain, we can't. You know the law. I am supposed to be a virgin. When I get married and my husband finds out I'm not, then a war could be started. As it is, I'm going to have to hope I get a really ugly man who hasn't had anything other than paid women so then he won't know the difference. You may not think it matters little now, but I do. Why tempt fate?" She avoided his mouth, her eyes still tightly closed. "You are only going to marry me. Or I will start a war to get you back. I swear to the Gods above, that you will be my bride. Or I will never marry," he cried, kissing her, wiping all her hesitations and denials and making her his with his passionate words. He felt her relaxation and submission. His hand left her breast and slid down her body, tugging her skirt up. His fingers grazed her moist heat and he lifted his head. "You want me Lina, don't deny me," he said, looking into her eyes. Numbly, Linaross shook her head, pressing her hips against his hand. Deny him? How could she? When his touch made her heart sing and her senses soar? She closed her eyes as the intense pleasure ran through her body, making her skin flush, her lips part. He kissed her hard, drawn wild by the look of pleasure on her face. He continued to please her, drawing his pleasure from hers as he slipped his long fingers deep inside her. As she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, she felt the first tremors of completion start. She shook her head, not wanting it to end so soon. "No, not yet...please," she pleaded. "Yes, now. It's not over with, love, not even close," he whispered, kissing her. And as though his words were as pleasurable as his touch, she cried out, her muscles tightening around his fingers. Her lips fed hungrily on his as the waves of pleasure coarsed through her body, sending her shooting int the stars. Slowly, she started to come down, his fingers still moving inside her slowly to help ease the fall. Afterwards, her climax finished, she relaxed, her breathing labored. Her eyes opened to meet his as he kissed her lightly, just brushing his lips over hers. He lifted himself off her, stretching out beside her and smoothed her skirt with his free hand. Then he slid his fingers out of her and brought them up to his mouth. He sucked on one, tasting her sweetness, closing his eyes in bliss. Linaross watched him, love in her eyes. "How do I taste Topain?" she asked, so softly. Her question was innocent yet erotic. He smiled and opened his eyes. He let her taste for herself. She licked his finger then drew it into her mouth, sucking greedily. It amazed her that the taste on her tongue, so sweet and heady, was her, her pleasure and love for Topain in the physical. "Perfect Lina, so very sweet and perfect," he answered. He lowered his mouth to hers, letting her taste her sweetness on his tongue. She gently scratched his back, her hands slipping under his silk shirt. Her innocent touch aroused him more than the most seductive woman could. He groaned and whispered, " I want you fully so bad. But we can't. The ball is tonight. It'll take us awhile to get ready. And we have to talk to Marikay about leaving. She was right...I see that now." She sighed in disappointment and pulled out of his arms. "Oh my beautiful Lina, I'll love you for forever; until the end of time. If I can't marry you, then I will never marry." Linaross's heart swelled with love and joy as he proclaimed his never-ending love. Her bright smile echoed her thoughts. Milky neighed, startling the two out of their world. Linaross looked up at the stallion that was peering down at them worriedly. "Shithell, that horse is so damn protective. He's like an oversized guard dog. Tell him you are all right. He only listens to you," Topain said, standing up. Linaross nodded and stood up, fixing her clothes. She pulled Milky's head down close to hers and whispered in his ear. The horse's ears swiveled toward his mistress to catch her words. Topain came up behind them but the big bay snorted, pawing at the ground in agitation. Topain hastily stepped back and Linaross laughed. "It's alright Milky. It's just Topain, my lover and friend. He won't hurt me," she said, soothing the horse. He calmed and allowed Topain to come up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back against him. Nuzzling her neck, he slid his hands up to cup her breasts through the bodice of her silk gown. His thumbs brushed over her nipples, causing her to moan. "Topain stop. Not now. We have to stop Marikay from leaving," she cried, not sounding convincing, even to her. He ignored her and instead turned her around in his arms and lifted her up against him. Her feet dangled above the ground as he kissed her fully, bruising her tender lips. "Gods, I want you, my own sister. Others may see you as my sister, but I, I see you as a beautiful goddess sent to make me love and see my own foolishness. May the gods help me, but I love you," he groaned into her hair. Gently, she untangled his arms from around her and turned to mount Milky. He helped her mount, his hand lingering on her hip. She settled herself then looked down at him. "Topain, in everyone's eyes, I am your sister, adopted or not. So in front of them, that is what I must be. So mount your mare and let us go home," she said. He frowned, displeased, wondering if she was having doubts, and then nodded. He mounted then moved the mare beside Milky. He leaned in for one last kiss, which she eagerly gave. Then he led the way back to the main road. As soon as the horses touched the dirt road, Linaross swore softly, "Shithell." "What? What's wrong?" Topain asked, concerned. "I left the crown back by the river. Let me run back and go get it," she answered. Without waiting for an answer, she wheeled Milky around and plunged back into the forest. When she returned, the token of her new station was placed safely on her head, holding her untamed curls back. Just then, watching her, Topain was reminded of a fairy princess. Her wild untamed look made him wonder just why she played the charade of heir to the throne when it was obvious she didn't want it. That she belonged in the wilderness, not a palace. But all he said was, "Ready to go?" She nodded and he set his mare into a run, flying past her. She slapped the reins and soon she was closing the distance between them. When she passed him, his breath caught in his throat. She looked so beautiful. Her form was perfect, her back as straight as a board. Her curls flew out behind her, catching in the same wind that made her skirt billow out. She glanced back at him, her blue eyes laughing and she spurred Milky faster. Cursing softly, Topain dug his heels into the mare's side, crouching low over her neck. But when he reached the palace stables, Linaross was already there. She smiled at him as he slid from his mare. When he reached up to help her off Milky, he could tell she had hardly tried. Tossing the reins of the two horses to a stable hand, he barked orders, "Take them and give them a rubdown and a walk." Dreams of Love Ch. 01 "Yes, My lord. Anything else Your Highness?" the meek boy said. In answer, Topain turned sharply from the stable, pulling Linaross toward the castle. She cast a glance back at the poor boy and turned to admonish Topain. But he cut her off by scowling at everyone they met, including their parents. All she did was gape at him, pain keeping her silent. It was as though the Topain in the forest clearing couldn't be with her in the palace. She knew that was for her own protection, but it still hurt. Inwardly, she ached to have him treat everyone with respect and kindness. It was as though the Topain in the forest clearing couldn't be with her in the palace. She knew that was for her own protection, but it still hurt. Inwardly, she ached to have him treat everyone with respect and kindness. He continued to lead her through the large, drafty palace halls. Finally, he pulled her into an empty guestroom and closed and locked the door. Groaning, he pulled her into his arms and buried his face in her golden locks. His hands found the fastenings of her gown and after fumbling with them for a few minutes, undid them. He pushed the silk and lace from her shoulders to her waist. Then he fell to his knees, looped his arms around her waist and pressed his face into the sweet valley between her small soft breasts. They stayed like that for a long while. He held onto her like a lost man, and she stroked his hair soothingly. Finally, he straightened, pushing her gown down past her hips until it pooled around her feet. Then, swinging her up, he crossed the room and then laid her down on the large bed. Swiftly, he undressed, watching her. She had sat up and now sat on the edge of the bed; hands folded demurely in her lap. She regarded him quietly, still except for the barely noticeable rising and falling of her breasts as she breathed. Her nipples tightened in desire under his intense gaze. She so resembled a porcelain doll, he faltered, unsure. Worried he might break her again. :What's wrong Topain?: she said in his mind. He grinned, shaking his head, feeling foolish. "Nothing, nothing at all," he whispered, crossing the remaining distance between them. Sitting beside her on the bed, he opened his mind to her and her alone. Sliding an arm around her shoulders, he pulled her close to him. Her slim, willowy form molded to his as he bore her back onto the bed. No longer did she remind him of a porcelain doll, for she met each of his caresses with her own innocent ones. Soon, she had him sweating, his body tense with need. Feeling her slim legs part beneath his, he settled himself between them. Then, thrusting forward, he dived deep into her hot, tight sheath. Nearly fainting from the pleasure, he started moving, marveling at how eagerly she arched to meet him. Soon, she was cresting, her back arched, her body tight and tense as she bit her arm to muffle her cry of ecstasy. And as she collapsed beneath him, sated, he followed, whispering her name in a hoarse cry of completion and joy. When he started to roll off her, worried he was crushing her she clung to him, keeping him over her and inside her. She opened her mouth to say something, but then froze, her keen ears hearing something he didn't catch yet. He looked down at her, concerned, and then heard it himself. Footsteps were coming their way. The footsteps were accompanied by voices, one belonging to Marikay, the other to Nursemaid Sora. "Have you seen Prince Topain or Princess Lina? They aren't in their rooms, and if I don't find them soon, they will never be ready in time for the ball," Linaross's maid, Sora said. Linaross paled at the frantic sound in the older woman's voice and step. But then Marikay answered, shocking them both. "The last time I saw them, Topain was dragging poor Lina through the palace. That stupid boy has no earthly idea how much more power Lina has than he does. Why, she has more power in her little finger than most mages do in their whole body. It's frightening knowing some one possesses that much power. Poor Lina might be married off to that Adarin, who will surely use her power for his own purpose. I just hope the king will realize that before tonight," Marikay said, her voice solemn and serious. The two lovers lay still until the voices faded away. Then, without any protest from Linaross, Topain rolled off her, sitting on the edge of the bed. Linaross knelt behind him, wrapping her arms around him and propping her chin on his shoulder. "Did you hear that Lina? More power than a Mage. Unbelievable! And now I know why Adarin was so determined to break up our love. Because he wanted you for himself, and your power," Topain said, amazed. "Yes love, but that doesn't mean he will get it. Besides, even if I do have more power than a Mage, that doesn't change how I feel about you. Now, come on, get up and get dressed. The ball is going to begin soon," Linaross answered, soothing him. He nodded, and reached for his breeches. When he stood up, she studied him, pride filling her. His body was lean and muscular, tanned by the sun when he worked out in the fields, learning to fight. His skin was smooth, tight, not a sag anywhere. His shoulders were broad and strong while his hips were narrow and muscular. His handsome faced looked peaceful as he felt her watching him. He flushed slightly, glancing at her as he pulled his breeches on. "Keep that up Lina and I might have to forget the ball. I want and love you so much," he warned, his blue eyes dancing merrily. Linaross laughed, the musical sound wrapping around him. Her laugh sounded so new. When had he last heard her laugh? Not for a long time. Not since he had started to push her away. Come to think of it, her eyes hadn't shined so brightly since then either. Nor had a true smile crossed her lips. He hated the thought that he had done that to her. Vowing to make it up to her, he slipped his shirt on then bent to retrieve her dress. He handed it to her behind his back as he picked up their shoes. When she didn't take it, he turned, confused. Linaross stood, clad in a beautiful ball gown. More exquisite than any he had ever seen. He swallowed hard as he watched her conjure a brush and purse. Brushing her long curls out, she smiled at him, confident. After slipping the brush into her bag, she concentrated on him. In a second he was no longer dressed in velvet breeches and a silk shirt, but court finery. It was just as exquisite as her gown. He nervously smoothed the ruffles of his shirt down; knowing full well he could never had done that. Not without resting between conjurations. Nor could he have conjured anything so fine. He shrugged and held out his hand. She took it, smiling softly at him. Together they walked over to the door. Unlocking it, he opened it. Looking out into the hall, he checked to make sure no one was coming. When he saw that the hall was empty, he opened the door the rest of the way. Leading her out into the hall, he walked down the long corridor, dragging her after him. To the people who they passed, his behavior appeared normal. She followed him, looking as meek as ever, but she was constantly whispering funny remarks about the people that they passed in his mind. He struggled to keep a straight face, but found it harder and harder as the maids and servants that passed looked funnier and funnier in their ball costumes. "Lina! Topain! There you are? I was looking everywhere for you. Lina, your hair! Why is it not up? Hurry to your room and put it up right now," Marikay ordered as she rounded the corner and saw them. "No, this is how I want it. Down and free," Linaross said, brushing past her tutor. Marikay tried to probe the young girl's mind and was stopped by blocks so strong, even she couldn't breach them. Then, gently, tentatively, she tried Topain and encountered the same blocks. Only few people could hold such blocks up for more than a few seconds. And that was mages. "I wish you wouldn't do that. You know you can't get past my blocks, so don't even try," Linaross whispered. Marikay blanched. Then, realizing she was up against far more power then she had bargained for, she threw up her own, feeble blocks. But she felt no probing on them. Linaross respected her privacy. "Shall we go then?" Topain asked, offering his arms to the two women. Linaross took it, and then looked expectantly at Marikay. Marikay hesitated for a second before taking his other arm. They walked toward the ballroom, and Marikay felt the mental conversation between the other two. She felt a pang of jealousy but quickly doused it. She'd soon find someone to love. It was just a matter of patience. When the trio came to the entrance to the ballroom, Topain reluctantly let go of Linaross's arm to escort Marikay into the ballroom. But they had gone no more than two steps when a handsome man came and swept Marikay away and into the bustling crowd of the ballroom. Topain stood staring after them for a moment, wondering where the man had come from before turning back to his love. She stood, waiting for him, an amused smile on her face. He shook his head, knowing that she had conjured the man. "You little witch," he whispered, walking toward her. She only smiled in response and held out her gloved hand. He took it, kissing her knuckles before leading her into the curtained alcove where they could watch the ball without being seen before they were called out. He watched her silently, longing to take her into his arms and hear her tell him she loved him. But instead, she stood by the curtains behind the throne dais and peeked out at the festivities being held in her honor. He knew that her future husband was out there, standing beside their parents. :Lina, I just want to tell you how much I...: he started; only to have her cut him off by reaching for his hand. "It's time my love," she whispered. He sighed and nodded, composing his features into a neutral mask. After living his whole life in the palace and playing by court rules, he knew better than to show any emotion they could prey on. He offered her his arm and she took it before they both stepped through the curtain and into the bright light that surrounded the dais. He blinked once or twice before his eyes adjusted, listening to the roar of the people who had started to applaud when they saw their prince and princess. Then, to his shock, his eyes focused first on Linaross's future husband who was standing next to Paintin. Adarin stood there, a malicious smile on his face when he saw the disbelief and anger in the two younger people's faces. "Adarin," Topain whispered, struggling to control the urge to march over there and slam a fist into Adarin's arrogant face. His earlier fear was confirmed right then and there. Adarin had poisoned his mind with the idea his love was immoral and wrong only to try and take that love himself. :Yes love, I know. You were right. He was trying to get you to hate me. But don't worry, I will talk to Father about this, let him know how we both feel. Maybe, he will call off the engagement: Linaross said, feeling him tense in anger. He relaxed a little, believing in her. Just then, Paintin stepped forward. "Loyal subjects, may I have a minute of your time? Today, on this fine, wonderful evening we are here to celebrate my wonderful daughter's seventeenth birthday. I don't know what mine, Shelakay's, or Topain's life would have been like if one of my servants had not found little Linaross in front of the castle, her mother nearly dead beside her. As her mother's dying wish, the Queen and I took the poor babe in and raised her as our own. Now it is my pleasure to present to everyone here, Princess Linaross Owlkin, Heir to the throne of our fair kingdom. And her betrothed, Prince Adarin of our neighboring kingdom, Relanin," the graying king said, pride obvious in his voice and stance. The crowd erupted once more into thunderous applause and cheering. Raising his hands for quiet, Paintin turned to his daughter. Holding out his hand, he smiled. "My beautiful Lina, may I have the honor of presenting you to your future subjects?" he said softly. Linaross smiled back uneasily and reluctantly stepped out of the comforting presence of Topain. Paintin didn't fail to notice the reluctance between the two. The hostile manner of this afternoon was no longer there, instead replaced by a love so strong it reminded him of his love for Shelakay. Taking his daughter's hand, he wondered if maybe he was doing the right thing in marrying her off to a man she didn't know and obviously didn't love. Maybe he would have been better off doing as his father had done and married Lina and Topain. A servant rushed up, a satin pillow balanced in his upturned palms. On the pillow was Linaross's new tiara that told of her position as heir and princess to the throne. Linaross made as though to decline it, thus declining her rise in stature. But, thinking better of it, took the silver coronet off her head. Almost immediately Adarin stepped forward and took the tiara. "Allow me," he said then settled it on her head. Leaning down he kissed her cheek and whispered cruelly, "Now I have you Princess and I will own you and that power of yours." Linaross tensed, but still managed to keep her smile plastered on her beautiful face. Just then the orchestra started playing. But instead of allowing the two to start the dancing off, Paintin raised his hands for silence. Immediately the orchestra stopped. "Ordinarily, Linaross and Adarin would be married after the fall harvest, but since she still has to prove herself worthy to this kingdom, she must serve the required three years out in the real world with out the help of my influence or me. After careful consideration, since she is a young woman, I have decided to send one of my most trusted men out with her. So, when Linaross comes back, she and Adarin shall be married," he said. A brilliant thought had just occurred to him. Why not send Topain out with Linaross? If things happened during that time, then he would have no choice but to accept them. But while he thought, Adarin had swept Linaross into a waltz. Topain watched his father, wondering what he was thinking. Then, movement out of the corner of his eyes caught his attention. Turning to look, he scowled. Adarin had Linaross in a vise grip, and Linaross was pouting a little as she tried to pull away. Squaring his shoulders, he walked toward them, smiling kindly. "Mind if I dance with my sister?" he asked his former friend. Adarin hesitated, but Topain had spoken loud enough for the people around them to hear. Those very people were listening, waiting to see if this new prince would show the kingdom his true nature. "Be my guest. I have the rest of our lives to dance with Princess Linaross. After her trial of course," Adarin said, putting Linaross's hand into Topain's. His smile as he walked away was malicious. Within seconds of the orchestra starting up a new song, he had captured the hand of a pretty, buxom peasant girl. Topain sighed and drew Linaross close to him, but keeping her a respectful distance so as not to raise too many suspicions. She matched his steps perfectly, his guiding hand on her waist barely even pressing. :I hate him my love. I wish he would give up on me while I am on my trial run: Linaross's words barely startled him; he had wished the same thing. :I know. I wish so too. Maybe he will sleep with some noble girl and be forced to marry her if he gets her pregnant. Dare we hope?: he said. She gigged and nodded. :Sounds good, though I feel sorry for the poor girl who does marry him. He is so cold and heartless. He cares nothing for love: she said and he had to agree with her. Already he was going over the nobles' daughters, looking for one that would suit Adarin. There were a few who would match his personality perfectly. The music ended and polite applause sounded as many couples migrated toward the long tables full of delicious food. Topain reluctantly released Linaross and after wandering through the crowd, making his appearance, he bade Paintin and Shelakay goodnight and went up to his suite. Calling his chamber servant, he shrugged off his shirt and breeches. His servant came in, a plate of food in one hand, a towel in the other. "The baths are empty right now milord, if you would like to soak for awhile. Shall I make sure you are undisturbed for the rest of the night," the servant said. Topain nodded and took the towel and food and walked quickly to the baths. Filling a bath with warm water, he undressed and slipped into the water. Eating slowly, he closed his eyes and sighed deeply. The memory of Linaross and Adarin dancing together stuck in his mind, making him ache. He knew that Adarin wouldn't give up such a beautiful, powerful girl that easily. So he would have to do everything in his power to make sure that Adarin was trapped in another marriage before three years was out. He swore he would save his Linaross from Adarin if it was the last thing he did. Dreams of Love Ch. 03 Linaross looked around the room and sighed inwardly. Topain was no where to be seen. In fact he had disappeared not long after the ball started. Sipping some champagne, she glanced up in time to see her father coming towards her. He took her elbow and led her into a secluded corner. "Yes Father?" she asked. "I want you to go to bed now. You have had a long day. Just walk out and don't stop for anything, all right my sweet daughter?" he said, brushing her hair out of her face. She looked perplexed and then nodded. "Good," Paintin said, pushing her towards the back hallway. She hurried through the door and ran quickly through the darkened hall. Then she stopped, looked around her then closed her eyes. Darkness covered her as she opened her eyes and kept running. Her heeled shoes made no sound on the marble floor. Neither did her soft breathing. An unnatural black surrounded her as she ran past servants and ball-goers. She finally made it up to her deserted suite and tore off her gown. The material had been confining and she longed to sleep. But she had to see Topain first. Clad only in a chemise, she padded barefoot to the door that separated her room and Topain's. Knocking on it softly, she waited a second before opening the door. The room was dark; not even a single candle lit. Topain's bed stood empty. She glanced around and noticed the door to the baths open. Silently walking over to the door, she slipped inside and peered into the steam. Topain lay slumped in a bath, his arms hanging limply over the sides. Fear filled her, choking off the short scream that rose in her throat. "Topain?" she gasped. He looked up and over at her. "Lina?" he asked groggily. She nodded and stepped closer, relief flooding her. He had only been sleeping. "What are you doing here?" he asked her. She shrugged and sat beside the bath. "Father told me to go to bed. So I came here to talk to you. Do you mind?" she answered, running a hand over his wet face lovingly. He shook his head and sat up more. "No, not at all Lina. I love being with you. Now, more than ever. Come on; let's go talk by the fire in my room." He hoisted himself out of the tepid bathwater and reached for at towel. Wrapping it around his middle he offered a hand to Linaross. She took it, blushing a little from the sight of his bare, glistening form. Together, hand in hand, they walked out to his room. He settled some pillows on the floor in front of the fire and sat her down. He pulled on some breaches, and then dried his shoulder length brown curls. Stretching out beside her, he stared into the fire, watching the flames dance and leap. She pulled his head into her lap and combed his hair with her fingers. "I don't want to marry him. You know that right?" she finally said. He nodded and looked up at her. "I know. I can feel how much you hate him. But don't worry. I'll think of something. Even if takes all three years of your trial. I promise," he said, pulling her head down to his to give her a quick kiss. She sighed then closed her eyes tiredly. Topain smiled gently and laid her beside him, tucking her body into his. Then he closed his own eyes and yawned. "Go to sleep my love." Within seconds they were both asleep. * * * * * Linaross looked over her kingdom. She would be out there by tonight. Away from the shelter of the castle and its guards. To fend for herself. She couldn't wait. It was a dream come true. Except Topain wouldn't be with her. Instantly, her mood drooped. Paintin had yet to tell her who her escort would be. And she would be leaving soon. Sighing, she turned away from the edge of the castle wall. Walking down the spiraling staircase in the tower, she frowned prettily. "Princess Lina. Your horse is ready. Shall I call your parents?" a servant said as he walked up. Linaross looked into his familiar face and nodded. Jenson was always there for her. Except now he wouldn't be. Suddenly Linaross's eyes filled with tears. Throwing her arms around the servant's neck she clung to him. His arms came up around her comfortingly. They had been friends for as long as anyone could remember. "I'm going to miss you Jenson. You are one of my closest friends. If I miss no one else, I'll miss you," she sobbed. He murmured soothingly and brushed her blond curls back. "Oh, my fair and kind princess, I will miss you too. The palace won't be the same without you," Jenson said, grief darkening his words even more. His handsome face was also wet as he tilted her face up and kissed her lightly. She sighed and dropped her head back onto his shoulder. Once there had been something between them, but no more. Jenson's shoulders slumped a little in disappointment, but he understood. He knew the way that she looked at Topain was no infatuation. There was love there, strong and evident. "Come, let us go now Lina. I will visit you on my days off. Just let me know where you will be," he said, leading her down the rest of the way down the stairs. Neither of them saw the tall lanky figure that darted out of the shadows and towards a hidden door in the tower. "My darling daughter, you will never believe how much we will miss you. I wish you didn't have to do this. I really do. But you must, so I give you one of my most trusted advisors to protect you." Paintin and Shelakay were at the entrance of the palace. With them was a cloaked and hooded figure. He sat on top of Lightening, a white mare. Linaross shot him a confused look and then turned to her parents. Her father held out his arms. Biting her lip, she hesitated before flinging herself into them. They clung to each other for a second before she pulled away. Fighting back tears, she turned to her mother. Shelakay's eyes were disapproving like always, but she smiled softly. "My little foster daughter is all grown up, looking just like her mother. Come back safe Lina. Please," the queen said before turning and walking back to the palace. Linaross swallowed the lump in her throat and looked around. Topain wasn't anywhere in sight. They had made love the night before, saying their goodbyes, but she still wanted to see him one last time. Jenson gently touched her shoulder to get her attention and then led Milky over to her. Surprised, Linaross looked at her father. "He is useless without you here. So you go ahead and take him with you," the graying king said before wiping his eyes. Linaross nodded wordlessly, knowing if she spoke, she would burst out in tears. She mounted with Jenson's help then glanced down at her father one last time. "I love you Father. I will be back. I promise you that," she said before wheeling Milky around, her saddlebags full of her necessities, towards the main gate. The hooded figure followed her, silent. The gates opened and they rode out slowly. The whole city was outside, waving goodbye to her as she rode away from her home and safety. Not long later they were on the open road, the last tower of the place slowly sinking out of sight over the horizon. The two horses walked slowly, taking their time, allowing their riders to relax. Linaross glanced over at her silent companion and wondered who he was. But then her thoughts strayed to Topain. What was he doing right then? Was he missing her already? The way she was missing him? She hoped so as she suddenly wished the three years were up and she was going the other way, back to him. "This is my dream, I must live it as best as I can before I must marry that horrible Adarin," she murmured under her breath. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the hood swing her way for a second before facing front again. "Maybe we should get off the main road?" she said, louder this time. Once again the hood swung to face her and she strained to see who it was, but to no avail. She was half tempted to probe his thoughts, but quickly scolded herself. He had a right to privacy. He shrugged and maneuvered Lightening off the main road and into the forest. She followed him, reaching up to slip her tiara off and place it in one of her saddle bags. "Stop," she called out. "I want to change." Another shrug and the mare stopped. She stopped Milky then slipped off his back. Digging in her saddlebag she searched for a pair of breeches. But felt with only folds of silk and satin. Cursing she stepped away and closed her eyes and concentrated. When she opened them, she was clad in some deerskin breeches and a loose shirt. Her blond hair was pulled back into a tail at the nape of her neck. Then she concentrated on her saddle, turning it from a side saddle to a regular riding saddle. Vaulting back onto Milky she nodded to the cloaked figure in front of her. "We can go now. But first tell me who you are," she ordered, her voice commanding. But the hood only shook in negation. She frowned and wondered if maybe she should order him to. But she discarded that idea quickly. It wouldn't help her any. Only cause frigidness between her and her protector. Many hours later, when night was coming, he stopped again and dismounted. She followed his example then stretched. Her muscles were sore as she took Milky's reins and followed her escort into a cave. Without thinking, she conjured a light to lead them even deeper into the cave. Then, he stopped and tied his mare's reins to a natural cutting of rock that resembled a bar. She followed suit then took Milky's care things out of one of her saddlebags. After brushing him down quickly, yet thoroughly, she prepared his dinner. The cloaked man had already taken care of Lightening and had started a fire. He sat crouched before it, his head still covered by the dark hood. Clenching her jaw, she strode toward him until she stood directly in front of him. His head jerked up but then back down. "Tell me who you are right now. I will not travel with an anonymous person. For all I know you are an imposter," she demanded for the second time that day. When he didn't answer right away, she felt the sick fingers of defeat creeping up her spine. She started to turn away to go make her bed by Milky when she heard the rustling of think heavy cloth. Slowly she turned around, and then gasped in shock. Topain stood in front of her, his green eyes bright with mischief. She took one step towards him, then stopped. "Are you real?" she asked breathlessly. "Come find out my love," was all he said. She made her way towards him, until she was right there in front of him. Reaching out a trembling hand, she placed it on his chest. Then she collapsed in his arms. Relief filled her as she closed her eyes, thanking the Gods with every breath and molecule in her body. Then she lifted her lips for his kiss. Later, when they lay on conjured blankets, naked, and wrapped in each other's arms before the fire, she closed her eyes and drifted to sleep. Topain brushed her hair back, for it had fallen out of its confinement during their lovemaking. He remembered how sad she had been all day. He didn't think she'd let her sorrow at leaving him overcome her joy to see the kingdom. But she had, and that amazed him beyond belief. Her joy at having both her dreams comes true on the same day made her response to his lovemaking more fierce and satisfying. He was glad Paintin had come up with this idea. He yawned and held her closer as he drifted into sleep. :Wake up my love. It's a beautiful day and we are together: Topain opened his eyes when Linaross teasingly touched his mind with hers. She was leaning over him, her blue eyes filling his whole world. Instantly, his heart started beating wildly with joy and love. She was his. He never could get over that. He pulled her down on top of him and brushed her long hair back. Kissing her lightly, he smiled. "I love you Lina," he whispered, making her smile widely. "I love you too Topain. I don't know how I could have made it three years without you," she said. Snuggling against him, she closed her eyes. This was the life she had always dreamed of. This was how it should be. Milky neighed, and tugged at his reins, knocking the lovers out of their reverie. Topain jerked a little in surprise before nudging Linaross. "I think your horse wants out," he said. She blushed and got up off him. Instantly, he missed her warm weight. She untied Milky and led him out of the cave, outside. He sat up and reached for his clothes and dressed quickly. When she came back in, her face was flushed from the bright sun and her eyes were bright. "I still can't believe that we are here together. It's a dream come true. Who would have guessed that Father would have let both his children go?" she asked, walking over to help him up. He stood and went to take care of Lightening. As soon as they had fed the horses and watered them, they turned to each other. He conjured a small brush, not wanting to tax his strength and turned her around so he could brush her long golden curls. When they fell over his hands in a soft cascade of living gold, she pulled her hair back and secured it. Then she turned and dropped a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you." "Shall we go? It's getting late and we need to find a town where we can masquerade as wandering peasants and find work. Or we will never pass this test," he said regretfully. She nodded and went to saddle Milky. Mounting she rotated her neck, working the kinks out. Then she waited for Topain to mount his mare. He stood there, watching her. "You go on ahead. If we come in together, people will begin to suspect that you are the princess. Everyone knows that she is traveling with someone. And lots of people want part of the castle's treasury. They will do just about anything to get it too," he said, coming over to stand beside Milky. He slid one arm around her waist and tugged her down for a quick kiss. "Be careful," he said when the kiss was over. Not giving her time to object, he hit Milky's rump, startling the large horse, sending it out of the cave at a gallop. Linaross could only hang on until the shock was over, and when it was, she was already long gone. Sighing in resignation, she slowed Milky to a walk and found the road. Not long afterwards, she came across a small town. Hesitating before she rode in, she searched mentally for Topain. :That's fine Lina. In fact I was going to suggest it: was the reply when she wondered if she should stop here. She sighed and wondered where he was. :No my love, you just go on in and get a room for the night. Try the Lonely Friends. It's kind of pressed for space tonight. This way we can get a room together: he said laughingly, reading her thoughts. She perked up at that and sent him a mental picture of them sleeping in each other's arms. Then she turned her attention back to the town. It was about midday and the main street was bustling as she rode in, looking around her. It was just as she imagined a small town to look like. Down to the last detail. Grinning, she dismounted and led Milky through the streets, looking for the Lonely Friends Inn. She saw it and looked it over. No not yet; later, when they were seriously pressed for space. Turning, she saw a small food stand on the other side of the street. Her stomach reminded her she hadn't eaten that morning. The delicious aroma of the baking rolls made her mouth water, but she knew better then to go with roadside vendors. Their food was usually made up of mostly unappetizing things she would never eat otherwise. Making sure her purse of money was still strapped between her breasts, she wandered back towards the bustling area of the town, where she had seen some fruit stalls. Spotting an old lady selling various fruits, she stopped in front of her. "How much for a fortnight's worth of food?" she asked, trying to quiet her stomach. The old lady peered up at her, noting her young face, and slender body. "You look like you haven't eaten in days, you poor thing," she said, clucking her tongue. Packing a few apples and oranges into a cloth bag, she handed it to Linaross. "Here, on me. And when you need more tomorrow, you just come to old Jiss here. Or a job; I'll help you with whatever you need," Jiss said, smiling kindly. Linaross nodded thankfully, a bit shocked. "Thank you! But I can pay you, I really can!" she protested. But Jiss shook her head. "Don't you worry your pretty little head about it. You remind me so much of my daughter when she was your age. Such a shame she died in childbirth." Jiss's voice got soft and sorrowful as she drifted off into the past. "Hey Jiss, can I get some food here." A customer shoved Linaross aside and Jiss perked up and smiled brightly. "Of course son. Just let me tell this young thing where to take her horse for a good price," she said. Then she turned back to Linaross. "Take that beauty there to the stables on Southern Grove. Tell them I sent you. They won't charge you much. And he will be well taken care of there, I promise you that!" "T-t-thank you," Linaross stuttered. Jiss shrugged in response and turned back to the young man. Linaross stored the bag of food in her saddlebags and started to look for Southern Grove and the stables. She found it after awhile and had Milky settled, promising to come see him later that night. Walking back towards the marketplace she heard a loud shout. "Topain is back! He's come back!" A little towheaded girl ran down the street, shouting loudly. Linaross's heartbeat quickened as she followed the throng of people towards the marketplace. There, seated on his mare, was Topain, looking as handsome as ever. Surrounding him was almost every person in the town. Girls stared up at him in awe and adoration, each hoping to catch his eye. Topain's gaze traveled over everyone, looking for one slender golden haired beauty. He knew she was there, he could feel her. Suddenly he spotted her, near the back of the crowd. His grin got wider and he slid of his mount. Instantly, the reins where taken from his hands and the mare was led towards the stable. Walking through the crowd, he smiled and talked to a few townspeople, greeting them, but keeping his eyes on her. He finally reached her and took one of her hands in his. Kissing the back of her hand he smiled and bowed low. :So much for trying to stay discreet. What are you? The town hero?: she laughed mentally. He shrugged and met her blue eyes with his own. :The town hero, I saved two girls from drowning when I was last here. It's helpful to be known in some places: Then he said aloud, "Well who is this young beauty. She wasn't here when I last came. And that was just a few weeks ago." Jiss stepped up and embraced Topain like he was a lost son. "She just arrived this morning Topain. No one knows her name," she said, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Forgive me. I'm Lana. I'm just stopping for the night," Linaross said hastily. Topain's eyebrows shot up in surprise and amusement. "Well, where are you staying? I might stay there tonight," Topain said. Linaross blushed and shrugged a little. "I'm not sure. But I'll be sure to let you know as soon as I decide," she promised, then turned and walked away. :The inn you told me to check out. Is that ok?: she said gently in his mind as she turned the corner. :That's fine Lina. I'll see you there in about a candlemark: His response was fleeting and made her wonder what he was going to do during that candlemark. Then she shrugged. It was his business. She fought the temptation to watch him in this new environment, and instead went to the stables to be with Milky. She groomed him carefully, thinking about how handsome and peaceful he had looked when he had ridden into the town. Milky leaned into each stroke she made with the currycomb, making her laugh. He looked at her, his brown eyes gentle and trusting as she leaned her forehead against his neck, her laughter turning to tears. This was a new side of Topain she had never seen before and it hurt knowing she wasn't a total part of his life. Dreams of Love Ch. 03 Someone cleared their throat, causing her to jump. She dried her tears and turned around. Jiss stood there, her faded blue eyes inquisitive. "Lana? That's an unusual name young one. Where exactly are you from?" she asked. Linaross fidgeted uncomfortably, pressing closer to Milky. "My name is a variation of my mother's. And I'm from this kingdom, just traveling, looking for my father. I never knew him," she finally said. Jiss's expression softened a little and stepped closer. Linaross stepped backward unconsciously and turned back to Milky. "I'm sorry child. I hope you find him. But I'm here about Topain. He seems to know you. Have you two met before?" Jiss's question made Linaross smile. If only the older woman knew. "No. I've never seen him before in my life," Linaross lied. Then she turned towards Jiss. Tossing her long bangs back with a toss of her head, she smiled brightly. "But he does intrigue me. Who is he?" she asked. "Oh, he is just a traveler who passed by a little while ago. He saved my daughters from drowning when my oldest daughter's husband tied them up and threw them in the river," Jiss explained. Linaross's eyes widened in horror and she gasped. "How horrible! Why would he do that?" she asked. "I have a feeling because they wouldn't give themselves to him. So he raped them and then tried to quiet them; permanently. Only now he is the one who is buried behind the church," Jiss said, tensing in old anger. Linaross was horrified that such a thing could happen in her father's kingdom. Nothing she had experienced in the palace could have prepared her for this. "Now child, don't tell me you've never heard of anything like this. It happens most everywhere, unfortunately." Jiss was watching her carefully. The poor girl looked like she was about to faint. "Actually I haven't. I led a very sheltered life up until now. It so horrible," Linaross stammered. Anger was slowly replacing the horror and she vowed to help those in need during her three year trial. Topain would help. She would see to that. "Well, that's the horrible thing Lana. Your mother should have taught you more. But, back to Topain. He's like a son to me. If you do get up with him, be careful. I don't want to see him get hurt. You hear me young one?" Jiss said fiercely. Linaross nodded and set to putting up her grooming tools. "Excuse me, Miss Jiss. But I most get to an inn. It's getting late and I've had a hard long day. I will see you later maybe? And I will keep in mind your warning. Good night," Linaross said. Jiss nodded and left, walking briskly despite her age. :Topain? Can you hear me?: she thought. was the immediate response. :Can I come to the inn now? Do you have a room yet?: :Yes love. Come now: Topain gentle, loving mind-voice warmed her heart as she strode out of the stables and towards the Lonely Friends inn. When she reached it, she groaned. Her saddlebags were heavy and the walk was longer then she had suspected. Walking inside, she looked around for the innkeeper. Spotting him, she strode over to him. "Innkeeper, I need a room for the night," she said commandingly. The older man stared down at her indignantly. "I don't have a room to spare girl. You should have come earlier. Go try someone else," he said before turning, dismissing her. She clenched her jaw and reached in her money pouch and took out some money. "I said I need a room," she repeated, placing the money before him on the counter. His eyes widened at the sight of the gold coins mixed in with the more common silver. "And I said I have none. Now go. Unless you want a dinner," he said, a little kinder. :Topain! Help: she groaned mentally. Then he was there, placing a hand on the innkeeper's shoulder. "Is there a problem Josef?" he asked, his gaze going between the innkeeper and Linaross. "Just that this girl wants a room here and I have none left," Josef said. Topain looked at Linaross closely. "Lana! What a surprise. I didn't recognize you there," he said. "You know her Topain?" Josef's stance was skeptical. "Yes. We met today in the marketplace. Here, why doesn't she sleep in my room with me, and that will solve the problem we have here," Topain suggested. Josef's eyes lit up, and he nodded eagerly. A few silver coins were swept up off the table and disappeared in his pocket. Linaross opened her mouth to protest, but Topain grabbed the rest of her money and her bag and led her towards some stairs. :That was too easy. Most likely he'll be checking to make sure I treat you with respect,: he said mentally. She murmured agreement and conjured a lantern to light the dim hallway better. He smiled thankfully and opened a door. "Here we are Lana, our room for the night. Do you approve?" he asked. "Yes. It'll do. But let me add a few things. It's too impersonal," she said. Then, concentrating, she conjured some things that reminded her of home, little trinkets that had decorated her room and his. He grinned and slid his arms around her. "Perfect Lina; I would never have thought of that," he whispered. She smiled back at him and kissed him softly. Then she laughed as his stomach growled. "Is someone hungry?" she asked playfully. He flushed and nodded. He opened the door again and stepped out into the hall. She followed him, her own stomach growling a reminder her last meal had been the night before. After they had made love so fiercely. She blushed hard at the memory. "Is everything satisfactory milord?" the innkeeper asked when they stepped into the main hall. "Everything is fine Josef. When is supper going to be served?" Topain asked. "Right away. Miss, are you comfortable with the bedding arrangements?" Josef inquired. "Yes, it's fine. I'm glad Topain here came up with it. What is to be served?" Linaross sat at a table and smiled kindly up at the innkeeper, bewitching him with her beauty without knowing it. "Whatever you like. May I get you some ale?" Josef suggested. She shook her head and he said hurriedly, "How about some cider, a bowl of stew, and fresh baked bread?" "Yes please. Thank you," Linaross said. He hurried away and she laughed. "So eager to please me isn't he?" she asked Topain. "You have money. If he doesn't keep you happy, then you might not come back and spread a bad word about his inn. He doesn't want that, so he caters to you. Just like I want to do tonight," he said. She flushed a light pink from his sexual suggestion. "Stop Topain, people are watching. What will they think if their town hero is caught catering to a lowly girl," she said, looking around. "They will envy me the honor of dining with the most beautiful girl this town has ever seen. I heard Jiss came to see you before you came here. What did she say?" He reached for her hand and held it in his, smiling lovingly at her. "Just that I better not hurt you. She thinks of you as a son. If I do hurt you, she will have the whole town after me. But she also filled me in on something I had never known," she trailed off, thinking of the cruel thing that had put Jiss's daughters in such dire trouble. "What is that Lina?" Topain asked, intrigued. "That the world isn't perfect. That many people hurt others for their own pleasure. Murder, stealing, raping, cheating; everything Father told me didn't exist in his kingdom. Why did he lie to me?" she asked. He shrugged and tossed his bangs out of his eyes. "I honestly don't know Lina. But no one can stop everything wrong in the world. Father is trying. You must give him credit for that. But here comes our food," he said, dropping her hand as Josef placed some food in front of them. "Enjoy miss and milord," he said before walking away. She laughed and started eating. "Mmm, this isn't bad. Almost as good as what Cook makes back home. But don't you dare tell her I said that," Linaross said. Topain laughed and watched her eat, loving her enthusiasm. When she looked at him inquisitively, he shrugged. "You look so lovely there. So different then I have ever seen you. I love it. I love seeing you so happy and carefree," he said. She blushed and hid her face behind her curls. "That's only because of the fact I can be who I want to be out here. I don't have to worry about court rules. I can be the girl I was born to be," she said. "You were born to be Linaross. You were born to be the woman I love and cherish. You were born to save this land from any evil that might still be lurking in it. Fate just decided to twist it around so that you were adopted into the royal family instead of born into it. That is why you were born. You are the one who makes yourself unhappy. You think that because your mother, Willa, was a peasant girl, you can only be happy with that life. But you can be happy as long as you love who you are and who you are with," Topain said, lifting her head up. "But," she started to protest, but he shushed her. "Who do you love?" he asked. "You, my love. I love you with all my heart and soul. I'd die for you," she whispered after a long pause. "Do you love who you are?" he asked her. She nodded, confused. "Then why can't you be happy anywhere life puts you? Like yesterday afternoon, you were finally out in the open country, but you were unhappy. Why?" "Because I wasn't with you. I had my dream come true, but I wasn't happy because the one person I wanted to share it with wasn't with me," she said, finally understanding. He nodded then sat back in his chair. Linaross smiled to herself. Topain was right. Life had been worst when she thought Topain hated her. But it got better after her birthday. She had left the castle, believing she had been leaving her love behind, and had been miserable, until he "showed" up. And everything had been exactly as she had dreamed. Except now she knew about the evils of mankind. Dreams of Love Ch. 04 Linaross stretched, adjusting in the saddle while she did so. They had been traveling for two weeks now, looking for work for both of them. After deciding that the town they had first stopped in was too obvious a place for her to take her trial, they had reluctantly left the next day, amid heartfelt farewells for Topain from the villagers. They hadn't been lucky in finding another village with work so far, but there was time. Also, this time alone was proving to bring a change to Topain. She glanced over at Topain and smiled to herself. He had started off the trip with a smug, domineering attitude. He hadn't intended it, but it had been there. In the way he treated her like a child at school, and he was the schoolteacher. True, she hadn't known many things, like how to start a fire without magic, or to construct a shelter at night. But there were some things he didn't know she knew. That even he hadn't known. For instance, two days ago, he was in charge of making supper and had decided to use some herbs and mushrooms in the rabbit stew. The things he had collected had either been poisonous or too bitter to eat. She had snatched them from his hands, scolding him for his ignorance. He knew nothing about plants or animals other then how to kill him. He would watch her for hours, watching the way the wild animals around them would come to her and suddenly become tame for her. Or the way she would collect edible and delicious plants to eat when he couldn't catch supper or when it was her night for supper. Slowly, his arrogance disappeared, replaced by an awe of her skills. She had much to teach him, just as he had much to teach her. Now, two weeks after leaving that first town, he was more comfortable with her, no longer trying to show off. They had once again reached that level of partnership they used to share years before. Linaross sighed happily at this revelation and patted Milky between his ears. "How much farther do you think we need to go?" she asked. "Not sure, but I'd like to go as far as we can go. The farther away from the palace, the less people will look for the princess. News doesn't really travel far without embellishing a bit. The last town we were in, the locals believed the princess was a small soft thing dark of coloring and spoiled. And her consort was old, short and ugly, a veteran from the border. Which we know isn't true. But the farther we go, the more untrue it becomes. Soon you will be a child with big innocent eyes and I will be the devil himself that has been paid to protect you." Topain laughed at the image. "Why would you be evil? Why can you not be an angel, beautiful and loving?" Linaross asked. Topain shrugged and nudged his mare closer. "I don't know love, but I know that is what you are. Maybe our loyal countrymen think I should be the opposite," he whispered, leaning in to kiss her. She returned his kiss eagerly, and then leaned her head on his shoulder, yawning a little. "Tired?" he asked "A little bit. When are we stopping for the night?" she asked, confused by the waves of fatigue washing over her. "We'll stop in a bit. Can you hold on a little longer?" he asked. "I would do anything if only you asked me too," she murmured. He flushed crimson, causing her to laugh. "By the way Lina, I want to congratulate you on not using your magic today to find food. I know that it would have been easier, but you didn't. I am really proud of you for that," he said, changing the subject. She grinned at him, toying with the idea of making him blush again, finding it adorable, but had mercy on him. "Thank you Topain. I thought I should probably learn to stop using my magic. That will set me apart from people. I know that." Linaross grew silent, wondering what he was really thinking. Because every time she had done magic in the past few weeks, he had grown dark, almost angry. So she had cut down on her magic use, which had seemed to pacify him, bringing him back to the Topain she loved so much. "Yes, that is true. People will begin to believe that you aren't a regular person," Topain said. "What do you mean, not a regular person. Of course I am. I just know how to use my magic. Marikay said everyone has it. Just a few people can use it," Linaross said, her blue eyes flashing in anger. "I know love. Just that the peasants believe mages aren't normal. And since you have as much power if not more then a mage, you will be considered the same," Topain explained. "Do you think I'm not normal?" she ventured to ask. He looked at her incredulously. "Of course I don't Lina. You are too dear to me to be considered normal. But if I were to meet you on the streets, I would think you were exceptionally beautiful, but shockingly normal," he said. She smiled, flushing lightly. "Really?" she asked. He nodded. "Of course my love." "Then why don't you like me using my magic even when we are alone?" she asked. "Because...no reason. Just thought you should be more cautious. Never know who could be watching." He looked away from her, clearing his throat nervously. "Then why didn't you tell me this earlier?" she asked. "I don't know Lina. Can we not talk about this?" he cried. Linaross cringed mentally and nodded. "Whatever you say Topain, I'm sorry for pressing. When are we going to get to the next town?" she asked. "We should get there by nightfall with this good weather. I've been there before. The inn is comfortable and the food is good. Also Milky and Lightening will be housed in the inn's adjoining stables," he explained. She giggled. "Will we be greeted by the whole town like we did the first night?" she asked. "No. We won't. I guess maybe I should have warned you about that. I'm sorry Lina," he said, looking ashamed. "I understand Topain. You wanted to surprise me and show me that not everyone thought of you as a selfish prick. Which I am very glad of!" she said, her soft musical voice filled with understanding. Then, without warning, her eyes fluttered closed as her body went limp, sliding off to the side and almost off Milky's back. The horse sidestepped at feeling his mistress's confusing signals, trying to keep her on. "Lina!" Topain cried, managing somehow to catch her in his arms before she fell to the ground. He stopped Lightening and managed to catch Milky's reins before the stallion could wander to far off. Not that he had to worry about that. The great white stallion hovered next to him, nosing Lina insistently. This allowed Topain to get a better grip on her limp form. "Lina, wake up! Please," he pleaded as he dismounted awkwardly. He laid her down on a bed of soft moss and tethered the horses to a sapling. As soon as he was sure they wouldn't run, he turned his attention back to Linaross. She lay there, in a deep sleep. When his mind touched hers, he felt nothing. There weren't any thoughts or ideas. Her mind slept with her body. He wondered what could have caused this. Because though she should have been tired of their day of traveling, she shouldn't have been so tired as to slip into a coma like state. "Lina," he whispered again, almost desperate. But he received no response. He lifted her slight weight into his arms and settled on the ground, holding her close. His head bent, he hunched protectively over her body. He knew he had to get to the village, but he didn't want to risk moving her. He didn't know what was wrong. Maybe she had been hit by a branch. Or a stray rock from the path had been flung up from the horses' hooves and hit her, knocking her out. He dismissed those thoughts automatically. A hit to the head wouldn't explain her mind's unresponsive behavior. Then it hit him, his heart going cold. A mage was at work. Only a mage, and a powerful one at that, could put a person into a trance so deep even their mind didn't respond. Fear swept over him. If a mage was after Linaross, they could be close by. He had to get Linaross to a safe place. A place where no one could touch her. And then he had to send word to the capital that they were being followed; and he had to work quickly. Standing up, casting a fearful glance around him, he slipped Linaross's prone form over Milky's back. Untying the reins, he secured Lightning's to Milky's saddle and then swung up into it. Milky was the only one strong enough to carry them both. He urged the white stallion back onto the road, apprehension and fear thick in his throat. As he rode away, a cloaked figure on a black horse stepped out of the woods. The Princess had been easy to control. She had had her shields down and been unprepared for the attack on her mind. His master would be pleased. Now all he had to do was finish off the Prince for his master and then he would be paid handsomely. He had been promised that. And he would get it. Dreams of Love Ch. 05 Topain rode into the courtyard of a magnificent house a few hours later. He had barely seen the entryway for the house from the road, only Milky's insistence to go down it had alerted him that it was there. He dismounted, Lina cradled in his arms, leaving the horses there, too concerned with Linaross's health to worry about them. Luckily, he had ridden them hard and they just stood there, panting, sides slick with sweat. Walking up to the door of the manor, he kicked at it. When nobody answered after a few seconds, he kicked it again, yelling loudly. A servant finally opened the door, peering out at him angrily. "Go 'way. Master not home," the man slurred. The smell of whiskey on the man's breath made Topain pull back a little, his stomach roiling in protest. The servant started to shut the door as Topain pulled back. He came to himself and inserted his foot into the door's path just in time. Shouldering it open, he carried Linaross inside. "I don't care. My companion is hurt. I need to get her someplace safe. I will take it up with your master," he growled to the drunken man. The servant scowled more and made as though to push Topain back outside. Just then, a voice stopped him. "Andlin, stop it. Can't you see this man needs out help. Let him in and send a groom to take care of his mount. I will see to the girl," a soft, feminine voice said. But in spite of its soft, musical quality, there was a note of command in it. A voice used to being obeyed. Topain looked up, to where a slim, attractive woman stood leaning over a railing. "Yes Milady," Andlin said, shuffling off to follow the orders. "And no more spirits Andlin, or I'll discharge you!" the woman called after him. "Yes Milady," he repeated, his shoulders slumping. When he was gone, Topain turned his attention back to his savior. "Kind lady, please, I beg of you, Lana is sick, I don't know with what. We need help and safety," he said, bowing his head in submission. He didn't care if he was the prince, he'd clean the floors on his hands and knees if this woman wanted him to if she would help Lina get well. "And you shall have it sir. Come, let me see the girl. I will get her settled, while you change out of those clothes," the woman said, leaving her post at the railing and coming around to the stairs. She descended them as royally as Shelakay herself would have. When she had reached Topain, she looked Linaross's sleeping face over. Touching one slim hand to Lina's forehead, she closed her eyes for a brief second. "Mage driven," she stated simply, before turning to ring a small bell on a side table . A large man entered the room, bowing before her. "Take the girl up to the green room. Send some maids in there to help me tend her, then escort this man to the blue room," she commanded. Topain started to protest, but stopped himself. If this woman knew what caused it so easily, maybe she could fix it just as easily. The manservant nodded and took Linaross's limp body from Topain. Instantly, Topain's arms started to ache, screaming in protest from the hours of strain he had put on them. He rubbed them as he followed his hostess and her servant up the stairs. Stopping briefly before a room done in all in different shades of green, the man laid Linaross on the bed then pulled a bell rope. Leaving the woman with Linaross, he led Topain further down the hall to a blue room. Grunting softly, he bowed, pointed to the bell rope, then the empty bath, then left, closing the door softly behind him. Topain understood that if he wanted a bath to pull the rope to call a maid to fill it. He did it instantly, needing a good bath before seeing Linaross. Also his arms needed to be soaked in hot water soon or he wouldn't be able to use them without excruciating pain. He pulled the tasseled rope, then sat gingerly on the large bed and looked around. The room was good size, and all blue. The walls had been painted a light blue, almost the color of the summer sky. The curtains were a slightly darker blue and the bed's covers were even darker, like the night sky. Chairs and throw rugs were a beautiful combination of different blues. Even the wardrobe was blue. A knock on the door signaled the arrival of a maid. He called her in, too sore to get up unless necessary. A pretty brunette came in, her comely looks surprising him a little, though why it did, he wasn't sure. She bowed low, her brown curls falling over her shoulders. She held the sides back with braids and a ribbon, the rest falling free in a tumbling riotous mass of curls down her back, resembling the style Linaross favored when at home. Her green eyes were full of curiosity and confusion, and a little fear. "Yes Milord?" she asked. "I need a bath. I was told I could get one," he ventured, suddenly unsure. "Of course Milord. I will be back shortly with the water and soap. Would you like a change of clothes also Milord?" she offered. "Very much, thank you." She nodded, surprised by the thanks and left, her manner efficient and quick. Topain smiled. Of course she would have been surprised. She wasn't used to being thanked for doing her job. But he was supposed to be kind and considerate of servants since he was supposed to be in their class, or at least not far from it. Pushing those thoughts out of his mind, he undressed. He draped the dust filled clothes over a chair, not wanting to dirty the lovely room. Standing there, nude, he waited for the water. Completely unselfconscious of his body, he hadn't even tried to hide behind a chair for the sake of decency. So, when the maid knocked on the door and entered, he turned to face her, completely exposed to her green gaze. She gasped in shock, taking the sight of his bare body in. "Milord!" she exclaimed breathlessly, color filling her cheeks. Then she composed herself with a visible effort and went to fill the tub with the pitcher of water she carried. A soft, herb scent filled the air, telling him the water would ease his aching muscles. He took one step towards the bath, not realizing he did so. Then, three large men walked in, each carrying tubs of water. Two were steaming, and the third was cold, so as to regulate the temperature a bit. They dumped the water into the bath, then left, not glancing at Topain. Topain crossed the distance to the bath and stepped gingerly onto the raised platform. The maid offered her arm to hold him steady as he stepped in and immersed his body. Then, she took a few more herbs out of her pocket, crushed them, and sprinkled them into the water. Instantly, Topain's muscles stopped screaming in pain. He moaned softly in surprise and looked up at her, eyes full of questions as the pain left them. She smiled and knelt beside the bath. Reaching into the water, she immersed her arms up to her elbows. Her fingers touched his forearm and gently, finding all the aching spots, worked the muscles. Slowly, she moved up to his biceps, working those muscles as well. Her knowing fingers were efficient, but gentle. Moaning again, he closed his eyes and let her work, thankful for her thoughtfulness. When she had finished with that arm, she stood and moved to the other side, kneeling beside him again. Lifting his arm out of the water he tried to help her, not wanting her to get too wet. But as soon as his arm left the water, his muscles started hurting again. He whimpered and she murmured reassuringly and placed his arm back into the water. "The water is numbing Milord. But it doesn't heal. Let me do this for you," she explained. His eyes opened when she spoke, meeting her emerald gaze. He smiled up at her. "Thank you. You didn't need to do this and yet you are. I owe you so much," he said, lifting his other hand and touching her cheek. To his surprise, her gaze dropped and a slight flush colored her cheeks. "You needed my help. I am here to do that Milord," she said, turning her attention back to her task. When she finished, he tilted her face up and looked into her eyes. "I'm serious little one. You are doing much for me. With this you will probably save my life and the life of my lady if what your mistress told me was true. If I can help you in any way, please tell me," he said. "Take me with you then Milord. Please don't leave me here," she said suddenly. Then her eyes widened in shock at what she had said and she blushed fiercely. Standing, she turned from him. "Why do you ask that little one? Are you not happy here?" he asked, concerned. She ignored him and busied herself with his soap. Catching her wrist, he turned her to him. Looking up at her, he swore. "You have me at a disadvantage little one. We will talk after I am clean and dressed," he said, resigned. She nodded and knelt again. Reaching into the water, she started to soap his body, cleaning him of the road dust. When she was done, she filled her pitcher with water and rinsed him. Then she concentrated on his hair. She was done within minutes, despite her obvious wish to prolong the bath, and thus prolonging their talk. His mind touched hers and he sent a wave of reassurance. He could see her relax a bit, not knowing what he had done. After she rinsed his hair, she helped him stand and wrapped a large towel around his body. Still connected to her mind, he kept up the tiring task of putting her at ease. He even made it so that when she finally did talk to him, it wouldn't be her own experiences she would be describing, but instead someone else's. She helped him dress, her eyes glazing over as he put her into a trance-like state. He didn't want her remembering telling him unless she wanted to. And also, he didn't want her running off when he went to see Linaross. At the thought of Linaross, guilt overwhelmed him. His first thought should have been of her and instead it wasn't. "Can you stay here until I get back little one?" he asked her. She nodded, her gaze refocusing for a moment. "Yes. I am yours to do what you will with. Mistress has commanded it," she said. Topain looked confused for a second, and then it dawned on him. The lady of the house was not only providing a maid, but also a bed mate, if he wished it. He could do what he pleased with her and not worry about getting in trouble for it. Not that he would. He already thought of her as a friend, almost like a sister. "Then stay here while I go to see my lady. Do not leave this room, nor are you to let anyone in," he commanded. She nodded obediently. He finished putting her into the trance and left the room, leaving her lying on the bed, eyes closed as though she was sleeping. Walking quickly down the hall the way he had come with the silent manservant, he soon stood in front of the doors to the green room. Knocking softly, he hesitated, and then opened the door. The sight that greeted him made his heart leap to his throat. Linaross still lay as though dead on the bed stripped of her breeches and shirt. Her pale face against the soft green sheets made her look dead. Stumbling across the room, he knelt beside the bed, grabbing her limp hand in both of his. Tears rolled down his face as he murmured her name. He pressed his forehead to her cold skin, sobbing his pain and loss out. A hand on his shoulder made him look up. "She's not dead. I managed to save her. She will wake in a few days. Her energy has been depleted, that is all. Come, you must be hungry. And you must tell me how you ended up on my doorstep with this young, untrained mage, nearly half dead and exhausted." The lady stood before him. Her soft voice sounded melodious against his aching heart. "I won't leave her again. I swore to protect her and I didn't. I have failed," he stammered. "You couldn't have saved her if you had known. You are comparatively weak next to even the one who did this. Come, Your Majesty. I yearn for company," she said, leading him from the room. Topain sent one last look at his beloved before turning his attention back to his hostess. "What a moment, what did you call me?" he asked. "You are His Royal Majesty, the prince, are you not?" she asked, looking over her shoulder at him. Her green gaze met his brown one, and he felt chills run down his spine. "And that young beauty must be Linaross, the Peasant Princess. Or am I just imagining it?" she continued. "What would give you those ideas Milady? We are just simple people looking for a place to settle," he protested. "First of all, your manners; they are impeccable. You walk and talk like one who is used to being obeyed. You have a grace that belies the position of a peasant. Also, I read into Her Majesty's memories when I was healing her," she explained. "You did what?" he cried outraged. He grabbed her slender arm, stopping her and turning her to look at him. "You had no right! Those are her private thoughts!" he yelled. "I had every right. You were distraught and would be no help in healing and she couldn't very well tell me what had happened. I had to so what I could to save her!" she countered, jerking her arm away. "She is untrained with her power. Though her outer shields are strong, her inner shields aren't. I only looked for her memories from today, and I received her whole life. Now, before you accuse me of some other immoral thing, let us go to dinner," she said, resuming her way. Topain followed, ashamed of his self. This lady was kind enough to take him and Linaross into her home, and he had to ruin it by accusing her. Paintin would have been so ashamed. He flushed and tried to remember that Linaross would not want him being so suspicious. "So you are the prince, right? Or is that girl just extremely delusional?" she asked, looking at him over her shoulder. "I am. But you can't tell a soul. Or else Lina will not become Heir. And our kingdom needs her to be queen. She has compassion and sympathy and love that you wouldn't imagine." He smiled softly. "Not to mention extraordinary powers. I've always wanted to meet somebody like her. I'm just a novice mage next to her. But it's enough to get by on. It keeps food on the table and clothes on my back. And my servants loyal and quiet," she said, smiling back. "You use magic to keep them here. And that is why the men don't talk?" he asked, amazed. "Yes. It gets very lonely here all alone when my brother is away; which is often. The menservants help me from losing my mind." Her smile was no longer innocent. Instead she had taken on the stance of a well-sexed woman. Something started to click in Topain's mind. "And the girls? The maids; I've noticed they are all exceptionally beautiful. What are they used for?" he asked, venturing a guess. "They are for my brother." His hostess turned into a dining room. "He makes me make them want him. I feel so sorry for the poor things. But he is family and I can't help it. He has threatened to take my power away. I don't know if he can, but I don't want to find out," she explained. "But what about when he is gone?" "I let their minds and bodies go. I can't bear to see them so sad, because the person they think they want and love is gone. Also, I heal them. He does such horrible things to them..." She trailed off, her eyes filling with tears. Topain thought of the one waiting in his room. She had been so scared when his mind had touched hers. He couldn't leave her here. Not if she was getting hurt. "What kind of things?" he asked. She turned to look at him. Her face brightened. "Lets not talk about this Milord. You must eat then go rest. Then you and the princess will meet my brother tomorrow. He is due home tomorrow morning," she said, avoiding the subject entirely. Topain let the subject drop. He would ask the maid. "What is your name? You know who I am and who Lina is, but who are you?" he asked. She chuckled, dropping into the chair at the foot of the long dining room. "How rude of me...not telling you my name. I am Distri Cloudkin. And this is my home," she said, gesturing with one shapely hand. "It is beautiful home Lady Cloudkin. I am Topain Owlkin. And the lady upstairs is my adopted sister and Heir to the throne, Linaross Owlkin," he said, nodding his head slightly, already attacking the plate of food set before him. "And also the love of your life, the reason you would nearly kill yourself to bring her to safety. As you are of hers," Distri said softly. Topain glanced up guiltily. Was it that obvious of his feelings for Linaross? Distri laughed when she saw the look on his face. "You forget Your Majesty; I have been inside the princess's mind. I know how she feels about you. I know more than I wanted to know. Like how important this trip is for her. How she doesn't want to disappoint you or your parents. Especially the queen. How she feels that she isn't fit to be a princess because her mother was a peasant. My heart reaches out to you and her. I will help you both for as long as I can. Also, I will train Linaross more. Marikay wasn't concentrating on the prospect of a mage, so she taught you the basics," she said. "Yes. Mainly because I am so weak power wise. I barely have any. Conjuring simple things can exhaust me easily," he explained between mouthfuls. She nodded understandingly. "Yes Milord. I can tell. But you need to be trained too. Your shields are weak, they need to be stronger," she said. "I'll train you both as much as I can, then I will send you to a powerful mage I know who will help with the princess's training. And in return, you will keep me company for a bit. Does that sound fair Milord?" she asked. Topain nodded and stood, finished with his dinner. He nodded to Distri, and then yawned. He was tired, but he had things to do before sleeping. And it was obvious to him that his hostess planned on keeping him here. So he feigned extreme fatigue and excused himself. She followed him as far as the stairs and then left, disappearing into the library. He sighed with relief. Opening the door to his chamber, he slipped in, before quietly closing the door behind him. The servant girl still lay on his bed in the exact state he had left her in. Touching her mind briefly, he ordered her to wake. She opened her eyes and looked up at him. "Oh, Milord. I thought you were going to see your lady," she said, confusion coloring her eyes darker. "I did little one. You fell asleep." It was best to not tell her he had used magic on her, considering all she had been through. Slipping an arm around her shoulders, he drew her close. "Now, you said you would tell what why you wanted to leave this comfortable place," he reminded her. Instantly, she balked, drawing away. But after a reassuring touch from his mind, she relaxed. "Yes. It will be hard for me Milord. So be patient with me," she warned. Then she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "I am known here simply as Trina. The lord of the manor fancies me and takes me to his bed often. More often then any of the others," she started. "He is a handsome man, worthy of desiring, I admit. Until you look into his eyes. They are pure evil. He is a selfish, horrid man who delights in hurting others, especially in bed Milord. I'm sure you noticed that I and those that I work with are not without . . . charms. We are hired for that reason. I have seen better maids than even I come and be turned away because the master was not fond of their face or shape. When you work here, your requirements are not being able to make a proper bed or clean and care for a house. Instead it is how pretty your face is, how full your bosom and how tiny your waist. Also, how long your hair is. Because, I've noticed that the master takes pleasure in long lustrous hair. It does not matter the color as long as it is to the waist of the maiden. Do not ask me why, but if a girl is to cut her hair any shorter than that, he beats her severely, almost to the point of death. And then, he will not feed them nor pay them, nor even acknowledge they exist until their hair is long again. I tried that after the first few nights. And I couldn't leave. He ordered the guards to hold me here. I am a prisoner here unless someone takes me with them. And the only other men I could have possibly gone with were his friends. I would have been no better off with them. But you Milord, you are kind and gentle. I know I will be happy with you," she concluded. Dreams of Love Ch. 05 "If you don't mind me asking, what is it he does that makes him so horrible?" he asked. She paled and dropped her gaze. "I'd rather not tell Milord. It's too horrid to remember," she said reluctantly. Then she cringed, as though expecting punishment. He laughed and drew her close again. Kissing her forehead, he hugged her. "I understand little one. And there is no need to fear me. I won't hurt you, I promise," he said. She looked up into his face, and seeing he didn't lie, relaxed. "Maybe another time little one," he added. She nodded emphatically. "But will you take me with you?" she asked. "Of course I will. Lana will be glad to have another girl to giggle with behind my back," he said. "We will leave soon?" she asked hopefully. He frowned. "I'm afraid not Trina. I need my lady to be well. Only your mistress can help me right now. Do you understand?" he said regretfully. "Yes Milord. Your lady must come before me. I understand that. But promise me we will leave as soon as possible. I have seen your lady and she is lovely. Exactly what the master would want for his personal pleasure," she warned. He saw the logic in her words and made a mental note to watch Distri's brother around Lina. Distri's words told him that her brother wasn't without aid in seducing Linaross. "I promise. And promise me not to go near your master. As a good host, he would offer me a bedmate since my lady is injured. I have already been given you, so he will have to bow down to that," he said. She nodded again, her green eyes filling with tears. "You are doing so much for me Milord. I owe you my life," she said. "No, you owe me nothing but your loyalty and friendship. Now, shall we sleep? I have had a long day and must care for Lana tomorrow," he said, reaching over to extinguish the candle with moistened fingers. Then, standing, he undressed in the dark and slid, naked, as was his custom, under the covers. Trina was already undressed and waiting. She pressed close, half afraid. "No, little one, I will not take advantage of you," he said, scooting away. She hesitated, before following after him, her chin set determinedly. "Please Milord. I know you love the Lady Lana, but I am asking this because I need to know that what happens between a maid and man isn't horrible and ugly. I trust you enough to show me this," she said. He pushed her away gently. "Please, show me," she begged, her lips right by his ear. He groaned, feeling his body responding to her nearness. "Trina, please. I love my lady. I don't want to do this, but I don't think I can resist much longer. So please, you don't know what you are asking me to do. Stop," he said, standing up. She smiled, her lips curving into a self-conscious smile and followed persistently. "I know what I am doing. You have to trust me too. I will not tell Lady Lana. Nor, after this night, will I ask you to again. But for this one night, show me what if feels like when you care about the person," she said. Topain could feel himself weakening as he stared at her lovely, lithe form. She wasn't as beautiful as Linaross, but wasn't without charm herself. Her slim body did attract him as he looked at the moonlight dancing over her milky skin. He gritted his teeth to resist the urge to give in to her breathless pleas. But when she stepped up to him and pressed her cool lips to his, he was lost. He pulled her close, his mouth crushing hers. Then he forced himself to slow down. This girl had been treated cruelly before and he wanted to show her that there could be pleasure in lovemaking. Breaking the kiss, he drew in a few, cooling breaths. She lay against him limply, staring up at him with limpid eyes. "Are you sure?" he asked. She nodded and drew his head back down to hers. This time when he kissed her, it was slow and sweet, letting her learn how to respond. For though Distri's brother used her in his bed, he had never taught her to kiss. Topain delighted in showing her these new things. He loved hearing the cries of wonder and passion that he caught in his mouth. All from just a kiss, his hands never strayed from her back until she was breathless, arching closer. And when his hand cupped one of her full, upturned breasts, she nearly drove him wild with her response. She arched into his hand, her head falling back and a hoarse moan issuing from her kiss-swollen lips. He resisted the urge to bury himself in her waiting body. Instead, he lowered his lips to her exposed throat. She tasted so sweet, like honey. He marveled at the softness of her skin as he kissed a trail over her throat, back and forth. His hand shifted on her breast so his thumb could brush over her hardening nipple. She cried out in wonder, her eyes closing. "Milord, it feels so good," she whispered. He murmured agreement and kept on kissing her neck. Flicking his tongue out, he tasted her skin, delighting in its unique taste. Nibbling on her collarbone, he moved his hand to her other breast, treating it to the same treatment. He could feel her leaning on him, unable to support herself and as his teeth caught on her earlobe, he lifted her and carried her to the bed. Laying her down gently, he followed, laying on his side beside her, leaning over her. She smiled up at him, reaching with one hand to gently touch his face. He returned the smile, then leaned down to continue his exploration of her body. Leaving a path of kisses from her full mouth, he made his way to her just as full breasts. Using his tongue, he traced a moist circle around her nipple, then flicked his tongue over it. She jerked, crying out again. Her fingers where in his hair then, pulling him closer, asking for more silently. He obliged. Drawing her nipple into his mouth, he suckled it softly, one hand covering her other breast, stroking it and squeezing it gently. She shuddered and writhed beneath him, her cries full of delight and shock. He moved to her other breast, his hand traveling down to test her sheath. When his fingers brushed over her entrance, he groaned in delight. She was wet and hot, more then ready for him. Slipping one finger inside her slowly, he moved up to kiss her lips. Her tongue met his in an erotic dance. Her hips moved restlessly under him, her muscles clenching around his finger. She dug her nails into his back and whimpered for him. Finally, he couldn't wait any longer. Covering her body with his own, he spread her legs wide. She tensed instantly, looking up at him with fearful eyes. "I won't hurt you little one," he promised, understanding. She nodded, but only relaxed a trifle. Gritting his teeth in frustration, he kissed her again, trying to console her. Then he touched her mind with his. Soothing her that way, he slid inside her. Then he stopped, halfway inside, shock stilling him. He could feel her pleasure! And it was mixing with his own in a way that threatened to drive him insane. Her gasp told him she felt it too. But when he went to close off his mind from hers, she shook her head. "Don't Milord. I like knowing that I please you," she whispered. Lacking the strength to deny her anything at the moment, he gave in. Then, stealing himself, he thrust inside her fully, quickly, not knowing if he could stand it if he went slowly. Her legs wrapped around him and pulled him close as her green gaze stayed locked on his. "You feel so good Milord," she whispered. He dropped his head, touching her forehead with his. And then he started moving, embracing the fiery pleasure with open arms. The sensations built and built, along with hers, until he couldn't hold back any longer. He groaned with relief as his seed spilled into her, her cries of completion echoing in his ears. Then dropping over her tiredly, he closed his eyes. Guilt automatically washed over him in tidal waves. What had he just done? He loved Linaross and here he was making love to another. He didn't deserve her. Rolling off on Trina, he covered his face with his hands, tears welling up behind his closed lids. He could hear her beside him, moving as she sat up, a little tentatively. She reached out to touch him, but he pulled away. "Don't," he growled his voice thick with guilt and anguish. "Don't blame yourself Milord. I made you do this. Lady Lana will understand. I will tell her the truth, that I seduced you. Please don't hate me," she said softly. "I don't hate you. I hate myself. If I love Lana as much as I say I do, then why would I sleep with you?" he asked her, sitting up, reaching for his clothes. "You love her. I know you do; I could feel it in your mind. I asked you too and then seduced you. You are only a man, just like I am only a woman, victims to our desires." Her slender, work roughened hands slipped around his shoulders. He sighed gently and leaned back, his shirt falling from his hands. Her touch was soothing and gentle. It was almost as though she held power in her hands. No, that couldn't be. She was untrained in the ways of magic. Suddenly, fatigue washed over him. Not so strongly that he collapsed into a state of unconsciousness like Linaross had, but enough to make him forget about leaving the bed and sleeping next to Trina. He needed her soothing touch. Obediently he closed his eyes and was asleep within minutes. Dreams of Love Ch. 06 Topain woke the next morning, sunlight making him close his eyes again. He turned, burying his face in the pillow. His hand brushed over Trina's bare skin. Jerking fully awake, he pulled away. She stirred and then sleepily opened her eyes. When she saw him, she smiled warmly. "Milord," she murmured. He tried to return her smile, but failed. He stood up and dressed hurriedly. "I have to go," he said, his voice strained. She nodded, understandingly. But he was already gone out the door. He felt like such a fool, running from her. He remembered before Linaross how he had never cared about the women he had slept with. But now, guilt was strong in him, making him loathe himself. Even more then he had when he had pushed Linaross away. Reaching Linaross's room, he pushed the heavy door open. His eyes swept over her still form and he dragged a chair to her bedside. Closing the door behind him, he locked it and sank into the chair. Taking her hand into his, he sighed softly. "Oh Lina...I have betrayed your love," he whispered. In answer, he felt her mind brush against his in a question. He nearly sobbed with relief at that touch as he opened his mind to hers. Linaross took instantly from him what would have taken hours for him to tell her. And when she brushed his mind again, it was full of love and pride. :My love, you have done something that is very honorable. You have showed Trina what it feels like to love. Why would I hate you for that?: she asked him. He shrugged, still amazed at her acceptance. :But I should have refused Lina. I should never have taken what she was offering!: he protested. Her answer was a soft chuckle. :Don't you see that she was terrified of all men? I felt that. I gave her the courage to ask for what she needed. I was with her last night, helping her to accept you. If you and I hadn't helped her, then she would have died soon of mistreatment and hatred of men...can't you see that?: Topain stared down at her in shock. She had made Trina ask him to use her body! :I also made you want her. Before last night, you had looked upon her as a little sister, one worthy of your protection. Not as an object of lust. I helped you both. I made you want her, because I would rather her learn from you then anyone else: she added. He jerked away, shocked. Linaross had never done this before. She had never manipulated anyone's mind or body. "How could you!" he cried out softly. He instantly felt her self doubt and guilt. Quenching his own anger and disbelief, he gathered her close. He knew she had done it for Trina's own good, and that was all that mattered. :I didn't think you would mind. I honestly didn't, or I would never have done it: she explained her mind voice full of anguish. He soothed her gently. "I don't Lina. It just surprised me. I'm not angry, honest," he said into her ear. He wished that she was better enough to at least look at him, but the spell had been effective. It rendered her body into a deathlike state, her skin cold, her heartbeat so slow that one doubted it being there. Only because of Distri's work was her mind still alive. :Are you sure my love? Because she will need more...you understand that right?: she said tentatively. He nodded. :Yes Lina, I understand that. And if you truly want me to help her, then I will, but I will need your help. When I looked at her just now, I couldn't understand why I had done it last night. I couldn't understand what had appealed to me. Now I do. You were with her in her mind. I could sense that. I should have guessed when her hands made me forget my guilt and pain and sleep. Only your touch can do that Lina: he said, smoothing back her hair. :I will help you in whatever way I can Topain. Do not worry about me. If you'd like, I could stay in her mind in such a way that I would feel everything she feels. So in a way, you would be making love to me: she suggested. :I'd like that love. I would feel better knowing you were there. Maybe then, I could forget about Trina and just love you!: He sat up, hearing a knock on the door. "Come in," he called aloud. Then remembering the locked door, he cursed softly and left Lina's side to go unlock it, hurrying back to his love right after, letting whoever was there to come in on their own. Linaross instantly grew silent and unresponsive, making him bite his lower lip. But he understood her reluctance. Her shields weren't up to full strength yet, and until they were, she couldn't trust that whoever came in might hear her. And if they did that they would keep their secret for them. "Milord, I've come to tell you that my brother Damion approaches. Would you receive him in here, or in the parlor?" Distri asked, slowly, gracefully walking into the room. Topain stood, not releasing Linaross's hand. He hesitated before answering, remembering Trina's words from the night before. But he could feel Linaross's curiosity. She needed to know about this monster. "In here if you will. Oh and when should Lina be able to use her mind again?" he asked, curious. "I'm afraid not for another day at least. I know you want to talk to her, but you can't. At least not yet, please understand and be patient milord." Distri flashed a sympathetic smile before bowing her head and leaving. "She's lying, my love. She said at least another day!" he informed Linaross. She chuckled softly in his mind. :Dear, dear Topain. She doesn't know that I am stronger then most. She honestly believes it will be longer before you and I can talk. And you were right. I do want to know about this man who hurts so many carelessly. When he comes in, I will listen through you. I've found I can do that if I know the person well enough: she said. "Of course. I should have thought of that my love. Forgive me for my suspicions. We can't afford to be so doubting of our gracious hostess," he said, opening his mind to her fully again. He felt her slip inside and settle there wearily. "After this I will leave. You need your rest. I want to leave this place as quickly as I can. And we can't leave until you are at full strength," he said. :Have you contacted Father yet? He needs to know we were attacked: she asked. He shook his head. "Not yet Lina. I was too tired last night. But I will do it right after I meet this Damion." He shook his hair back, wishing he had secured it before he had left him room. And then suddenly it was. He laughed and looked at Linaross in amazement. :He's right outside the door my love: was all she said. "Yes Lina..." he said just as a knock sounded on the heavy wooden door. "Come in," he called. "I can't believe I have to knock on my own door in my own house!" a male voice was saying as the door opened. In walked a tall, muscular man, handsome to a fault, every golden hair perfectly placed, his well tailored clothing molding to his well muscled body. He carried himself like a member of the royal line, the strange golden color of his eyes looking with thinly veiled contempt on his sister who followed meekly behind him. Instantly Topain realized how easy it could be for a girl to fall under his spell, until she looked into those eyes and say the dark malice lurking there behind the beauty. "Well Damion, this is a lady's private room. It is considered polite to knock," Distri said as she followed her brother into the room. "Milord, this is my brother, Damion Cloudkin. He owns this little manor," she introduced, curtsying low. Topain stood, bowing his head in response. "So this is the nobleman my sister insisted I meet. He doesn't look like much to me Distri," Damion said, looking Topain over. Topain noted how he didn't even incline his head in greeting, even though he was before someone of noble blood. "Well Lord Cloudkin, I must say, looks can be deceiving. For you look like a prince, even though I have been assured you are not," he said, smiling. Damion scowled, and then turned to his sister, dismissing her with a wave of his hand. She automatically left, acting more like a servant then Damion's own flesh and blood. This made Topain frown slightly, remembering all to well how he used to do the same. He thanked the gods and Linaross for bringing him back from the heartless cruel persona he had grown into. And he could only hope that this Damion would eventually realize the same, though he doubted it. "I'm sure my darling sister made sure to tell you that we aren't as noble as we appear. She seems proud of her humble beginnings. But I am not, I assure you. So you are Cres Tiferkin," he said. "Sit, we will talk," he commanded. Topain smiled to himself. He acted like a prince too. He sat, only after Damion had. He reached automatically for Linaross's hand, strengthening their mental connection. "She's quite beautiful. Is she your sister?" Damion asked, his greedy golden eyes locked on Linaross's sleeping form. :Tell him I am your traveling companion Topain: Linaross suggested in his mind. He protested, but when he started to speak, he said, "No. Just someone I met a few towns ago. We were going the same way, so started to travel together. I barely know her." He gritted his teeth, sending a few swears to Linaross. :I always get my way my love, haven't you noticed that?: she said, laughing. "Well, that is good to hear," Damion muttered. Then aloud, "So she is available? Do you know?" "Yes. But I don't think she is looking for marriage. I think she is going to the church," Topain said hurriedly. "Maybe I can change her mind Milord. And if you put a few good words in for me, I would be forever in your debt. She is lovelier beyond belief," Damion said, his voice practically dripping with feigned friendliness. "I will think about it Damion. I have an obligation to protect her, since she is so young and trusting. But you seem to be a strong, intelligent man. One who would make a good husband for Lana. Come, let us talk more about other things besides this lovely creature," Linaross made Topain say. He sent his anger and fear for her safety to her through their connection. Damion had a reputation of being a hateful, violent person. Two people had warned him of this. :Don't worry my love. I can protect myself: she assured. :But not as weak as you are Lina. Even talking to me is difficult to you. And you and I share one of the closest bonds Marikay has ever seen. He can easily overpower you!: he protested, even as he talked with Damion about the weather and profits of trading. She sighed softly, giving in for the moment. "Damion, I have to say though. I'd rather not think of marrying Lina off until she is completely well. And I would feel more comfortable if her door was locked at night. And then the key given to my maid, Trina," he said as soon as he felt her acquiesce. Damion looked furious for a second, then smoothed his handsome features into a careful mask. "Of course Cres, I wouldn't oppose that at all. She is under you care. And you will do what you seem best. I will lock the door myself and hand the keys over to Trina," he said graciously. Then he paused. "Trina you say? Why she is my personal maid. Did Distri give her to you?" he asked. "No Damion. I chose her. The one given to me didn't suit my preferences. Do you mind?" Topain asked innocently. Damion flushed. "No Cres, not at all. You are welcome to her. I don't blame you for choosing her though. She is quite an amazing beauty. If she had been of noble birth, I would have wed her. But I am sure she will find another to love," he said hurriedly. He stood, smoothing his tunic down. "Now, if you will excuse me Cres, I have important things I must see to. I will see you at dinner perhaps?" he said. Topain stood. "Yes. How could I turn down an invitation from our gracious host?" he said, bowing slightly. Damion frowned, then inclined his head reluctantly. Then, turning on his heel, he left the room quickly. Topain automatically turned to the still figure on the bed. "And now you Lina, you deceiving little sneak. You will rest for the remainder of the day. I will have you well as soon as possible. I don't like that man. I also don't know what you are trying to do here, but I am against it!" he growled. :I will tell you when I am better my love. But until then, I will do as you say. But go now and learn all you can about our host from his sister. Or from Trina. That poor girl is more then willing to help. And do not forget our agreement concerning her. You promised to teach her!: Linaross said. Her mind-voice was tinged with extreme mental fatigue. "Don't worry my love...I will teach her. But you must help; remember that as you plan against our so ungracious host." He leaned down to kiss her forehead lovingly before leaving the room. :And you stop antagonizing him!: she retaliated weakly. He laughed and shook his head, closing the door gently behind him. He walked towards the stairs, needing to see to his horses, to ask their forgiveness for his rough treatment the day before. Also he had to write a letter to his father. At the thought of his father, Topain's mind wandered back to two years ago. He had been sent away to schooling when he was a little over six years of age. He hadn't come home except on holidays and even then, he tried to find somewhere else to go. When he had finally been sent home right before his eighteenth birthday, he had grown up into a stranger, but one who was willing to rule the land with care and compassion, after seeing what his father did from an outside view. Almost immediately, after his birthday ball and the proclaiming of his rise to royal Heir, he left on his trial, determined to prove this to his father. Then, Linaross had been a scrawny, pigtailed girl who had demanded all of the attention from their parents. Three years later, he returned, wiser and stronger, changed in many ways. And he found that the girl everyone called his sister, who he barely knew, had changed too. She had grown an inch or two more, but was still almost a foot shorter then him. Her dirty-blonde tresses had turned to a molten honey-gold color. Her watery blue eyes had cleared and brightened into the alluring sky blue shade that he loved. And she had filled out, her stick thin body filling out and developing the curves of a woman. He was instantly smitten with her beauty, and when he started to know her, her intelligence, wit, and fondness for even the littlest things. But she had been infatuated with one of the upper servants. Topain struggled to remember the name of his rival for Linaross's heart. Jenson. That was it. Eventually, though, her eyes had strayed to him, and he managed to win her interest, and finally her love. By pure accident, they ended up staying together all night long in the pouring rain in the forest. With both their desires raging out of control by the closeness of the other, in the sheltering confinement of a cave, they ended up making love. Topain had been filled with joy and delight, immediately going to his new friend, Adarin, to crow his delight and joy to him. But instead of sharing his joy, Adarin had expressed disgust. "You slept with your SISTER?" he had asked, horrified. Topain had tried to explain, but every point Adarin had made had seemed so logical. Eventually, Topain hated himself for taking Linaross's virginity, and also he hated the fact that he had desired his sister so much. But no matter how much he hated himself, he found he couldn't hate the one person who had captured his heart. And that person lay in a green bedroom, so vulnerable, so beautiful it made his heart ache just to look at her. Eventually he couldn't stay away from her; he had to tell her how much he loved her. And now he thanked the stars above he had and that she had taken him back into her heart and her arms. Now if only he had been able to protect her... He pushed his thoughts way as he entered the stables. Seeing that Lightening and Milky were content and happy eating grain in an open stall, he turned intent on finding Distri. When he did, he smiled a greeting. "I need to send a message to my father, explain what happened," he said. She nodded, understanding. Then, she led him to the library. "You will find paper, pen, and ink on the desk. I will return in a bit to take the finished letter. I will mail it for you so my brother doesn't suspect something," she offered. He breathed in relief, not wanting Damion to know Linaross or his true identities. Sitting behind the desk, he picked the pen up. Dipping it into the inkwell, he took a deep breath. This would be the hardest letter he had ever had to write. Paintin loved his adopted daughter fiercely, and hated to hear of any ill that might have befallen her. Setting the pen to the paper, he penned a quick letter to his father of what he knew so far. Then, after sanding the wet ink, he folded it and dripped the hot wax onto it. Pressing his signet ring into the wax, he sealed the letter closed; breathing a small spell over it to assure it reached his father, unopened, as fast as possible. He stood and went to Distri in the kitchen. She turned to him, surprised at his speed but nodded, taking the letter from him and turning to the servant beside her. "Make sure this gets delivered to the palace Fridrik, and stop for no one. Then wait for a response before returning home," she commanded clearly. The mute man nodded once, taking the letter before turning to leave. She looked at Topain. "He is one of my most trusted. If he can't do it, then no one can. Though I really can't foresee any problems. My brother is sleeping from his travels and would not have heard us. Even if he could have heard us through the shields and walls of this room. And Fridrik can fight off any mage with the shields I have put on him. He serves me out of love, not through any spells of mine." Her words, meant to reassure only caused Topain to pace. If that letter didn't make it to his father, they wouldn't know Lina's life was in danger. Distri placed one small delicate hand on his shoulder, her eyes dark with concern and worry. "Relax Milord. There is not much more for you to do right now. And if you wear yourself out with pacing and worrying over things that are now out of your control, you can not remain strong for the lovely Lana. And that will accomplish nothing. She is strong willed, but she depends on you for most of her faith. You are her world, her everything. If you exhaust yourself, she won't find the hope to fight the spell holding her mind and body captive." The dulcet voice caressed his mind, waking him out of his worry with her wisdom. "You are right sweet lady. Forgive me for my lack of discipline. It is hard for me to see her like that. Ever since I can remember, she has been strong. No one would harm her, they love her moments after meeting her. But I find myself rambling. Once again, I ask forgiveness," he said, smiling for her, to ease the lines of worry he saw between her emerald eyes. "Perhaps you can distract me with a lesson?" he asked. "Oh! Of course Milord. And there is no need to ask forgiveness. You are understandably distraught and worried. It makes you human to lose yourself in your emotions every now and then. Come; let us go to the workroom. It is well shielded in there, so much so that nothing can pass through, not even regular sounds." She turned, long blond hair swaying behind her as she led him through the manor to a tiny room in the center of the building. The entire room was made of stone, from the door to the few pieces of furniture inside. After sliding the door closed, despite it's heaviness, she turned and smiled. "Feel better Milord?" she asked. Nodding, the soft hum in his mind fading to silence as the door closed, he looked around the room. He had never even noticed the hum before, it having been a part of his mind all his life. But, now with it gone, he realized how loud it had been. Suddenly, he could think clearly, more so then he ever had before. "Yes. It's so quiet in here, I almost don't believe it!" he murmured, his eyes wide. "What type of rock is this?" Dreams of Love Ch. 06 "To be honest, I don't know. It was here when my family built the manor long ago. They just built around it. Even the table and benches were here. My grandmother told me that this land used to belong to a school of mages from long ago. And all that is left of their university of magic is this room. My non talented family members have used it as a place for private conferences or secret trysts. My brother liked to use it for his...fun. But my grandmother stopped that with her dying breath a few years ago. She made him forget it existed. He doesn't even see the door anymore. I just renew the spell every year. Otherwise, he would taint it, and the natural magic would start to fade. Too much grief and pain in one blessed area," she mused, walking around the room and tracing the ward signals on the four points of the room. The signals flared with power for a split second before slowly fading. Finally, she gestured him to sit on one of the stone benches before gathering her skirts and sitting on another herself. When he did sit, he was pleasantly surprised to find the stone surprisingly comfortable to sit on, almost soft. "Amazing," he murmured, his fingers caressing over the stone. "It's almost like sitting on the best made divan. This is truly magical stone. She just smiled and nodded "The stone seems to become what you need it to be. The benches are comfortable enough to sleep on without regretting the decision in the morning. The door is lighter then most wooden doors and the table will let you write on it. And the most amazing thing is the writing is gone when you need it to be. We have never been able to figure it out, but we just thank the gods that they graced is with such a blessing. Now, it is time for your lesson." He nodded, making a mental note to tell Lina about this room, as well as his father. "First, find you need to learn to find your center and to create an anchor. Otherwise, your shields will crumble, just like any house will without a bearing wall. Something needs to be the basis, the anchor for your shielding, your spells, anything with your power. Otherwise, you will lose the energy easily. With the proper training, you, with your tiny power could become stronger then someone with mage power but no training. It's a matter of knowing your strengths and weaknesses and using them to your advantage. Also, without proper anchoring, power leaks continuously, draining you at a constant pace. Thus explaining why even simple conjuring tires you so easily. You are drawing on the last dregs of your power. Because you only ever have those last dregs left. Do you understand?" she asked Topain nodded. He appreciated her explaining the why to things. Marikay had only ever told him to do, without giving him reasons for why he was doing it. And this made sense to him. He felt more tired at the end of the day, then he did in the morning. And he never knew why. If he didn't use magic all day, why would he be so drained? But if he was continuously losing the power, that would explain it. Resolutely, he tuned his whole mind into what Distri had to teach him, a small smile curving his lips as he found a fascination in the more arcane side of him for the first time in his life.
