I wanted to add some illustrations this time but that didn't work out. This first chapter is mostly scene setting. It was near the end of July, 1942 and the newspapers in Hawaii were full of news of the war. The Japanese, after a string of victories in Indochina, Guam, Wake Island, Singapore, and the Philippines, were finally feeling the sting of bringing the United States into the war. The Doolittle raid on their homeland had shaken Japanese leaders. The naval battle in the Coral Sea had basically ended in a draw or maybe a Japanese advantage but it did thwart the Japanese attack plans on Port Moresby. Now the Americans were starting to take the fight to the Japanese after the decisive victory at Midway, where four of Japan's ten heavy carriers were lost. The first group of islands the Americans tried to take were the Solomon Islands. They are a small group of islands in the South Pacific about 1,000 miles to the northeast of Australia. While General MacArthur did his best to stop the Japanese on Papua New Guinea, a second force under the leadership of Admiral Chester Nimitz began to plan an attack on the Japanese controlled islands in The Solomons. The plan was for both MacArthur and Nimitz to gain control of Rabaul, on the island of New Britain, and to capture the Japanese stronghold there. The Japanese were using Rabaul as a major base from which to attack Allied shipping and also to supply other Japanese held islands in the region. To take Rabaul, they would first have to take back The Solomon Islands recently lost to the Japanese. The newspapers told of the Japanese attacks on New Guinea being repelled by the Allied Forces, chiefly made up of Australians. They had counterattacked the Japanese and pushed them back in difficult mountain and jungle fighting. MacArthur then used a brilliant series of combinations of naval, air, and land forces to attack and push the Japanese back in many of the northern areas of New Guinea. With the new jungle fighting, the Allies had to worry not only about casualties and wounded but about malaria and other diseases. Bites from snakes and scorpions were a real threat too. Many soldiers were being wounded but many were also falling victim to the horrible conditions in which they had to fight. While the war raged, the last two weeks had seemed like heaven for the nurses from Midway as they enjoyed the sights and free time they were given in Hawaii between assignments. Their days were filled with beach time and their nights enjoying the bars, movie theaters, and the parties in and around the base. The beautiful weather and wonderful scenery provided the perfect setting for a wonderful couple of weeks of rest and relaxation. In many of the nurse's opinions it didn't hurt either that the whole island was covered with men in uniform. Dorrie and Vivian had kept up their wild ways by partying with the sailors and marines almost every night. Bea, May, and Jenny had kept more to themselves. They had danced at the bars but held their sexual activities in check, much to the chagrine of the many men they accepted dances with at the clubs and bars. They all got a good kick out of it when Viv had to be treated by Charlotte's boyfriend, Doctor Sanford, for a case of venereal disease. The nurses waited anxiously to learn of their next assignment. Other than Viv, they all hoped for safe duty back in the States or some low risk war area. They constantly pestered Charlotte for any news, even as they enjoyed themselves. Everyone hoped their days on Hawaii would continue but all knew that wouldn't last much longer. On exactly the fifteenth day of their R & R, Charlotte called them all together with news. They were being reassigned to a Task Force Naval Battle Group being formed and sent to an island in the Solomons. No further word was given for secrecy but they were to report for duty on a hospital ship as part of the task force. It would depart Pearl in two days. Afterward they all scrambled to find the Solomon Islands on a map. Bea and Dorrie thought surely such little islands couldn't hold much significance until Viv astutely pointed out the size of Midway to them. As the women packed, the mail arrived. Jenny hit the jackpot, or so the other nurses pointed out as she had four letters to most everyone else's one or two. May did get one from Ben besides one from home. The girls stopped packing and each sat silently reading their letters. Jenny had one from home and one from her brother. She read those first. The letter from home was mostly about the funeral for her boyfriend Gary, which her parents attended. The letter brought tears to her eyes to the point that the others asked what was wrong. She told them and they understood. It was getting to be that many people knew someone killed in the war. If they didn't, they at least had someone in the military and probably in harms way, so they understood. The letter from her brother was almost as bad. It spoke of the horrors of war and seeing many dead soldiers and bombed out towns and villages. He was too close to the frontlines for Jenny's liking and she prayed he would be safe. She wasn't sure she could handle losing another person so close to her. He told of being in England and the bombings. Also about the unbelievable fortitude of the British people. The next two letters were the ones that made the others jealous. Jerry Johnson and Brad West had both written to her upon returning state-side. Jenny read Jerry's letter first. He was recovering nicely. The scars on his face were healing and beginning to clear up. His eyesight was improving too. He could make out more than just blurred shapes now. He could almost tell people apart and the doctors were optimistic he would continue to improve. His fingers were all better except the two on his left hand. Both of those had permanent skin damage and lost mobility but they did not have to be removed, which Jerry was thankful for. His letter was full of questions about where she was. Was she still in Pearl or had they been reassigned. At the end, he talked of missing her badly. He hoped they would be able to see each other soon back in Nebraska. The remaining letter was from Brad West. It told of his recovery, rehab, and fitting for artificial limbs. His parents had money and he was receiving the best care both the military and civilian doctors could provide. It didn't seem to help his depression though and the rest of the letter was about missing her. He practically begged Jenny to come see him as soon as possible. He offered to pay whatever costs she would incur. Jenny set the letters aside feeling melancholy after reading them all. It seemed to her that most of the news these days was all about the war. Everything was death and killing, and family, friends, and lovers all separated from each other and missing them. She looked depressed as the others talked about their letters. "Why the long face, Jenny? You got more letters than any of us and probably have two beaus waiting for you to return. The rest of us are lucky to have one," Viv said. "Leave her alone, Viv. She lost her old boyfriend, remember," Bea proclaimed. "Yeah, why are you looking so depressed now?" Dorrie questioned. "I thought you just read the two from Jerry and Brad." "I did. Jerry's was great and upbeat but Brad's was concerning. He is really depressed and wants me to come see him right away," Jenny said, fighting back a tear. "Well, that's not going to happen," Bea offered. "We need to pack tomorrow for our reassignment." "Yeah, I know," Jenny agreed sadly. "He'll be okay till you can get to see him," May said, trying to reassure her. "Send him a nice letter. That'll make him feel better." "Who do you really like anyway?" Bea asked. "If you went back today would you want to see Jerry first or Brad?" "I don't know," Jenny stated. "That is part of the problem." "You are confused, girl," Dorrie added. "I know," Jenny agreed. "Tough problem to have," Viv claimed. "Too many men want her. Look, Jenny, by the time your tour is up you'll probably meet ten more guys that will fall in love with you. Look at you, girl. You have that affect on these poor slobs. Don't be a sucker for each one of them. It'll drive you crazy." "Viv's right, Jenny. You'll probably meet someone else before we're through. It's the business we're in. They give us the sick and wounded to care for. Naturally we're going to feel sorry for them all. You need to realize we can't please everyone," Dorrie avowed. "I know," Jenny said. "But it's just that..." "Hey, Brad and Jerry were special to her. She didn't go for them all," Bea defended her. "We're just saying, this war is far from over," Dorrie stated. "We all know that," May agreed. The conversation turned to more pressing concerns of packing and preparations. Each of the women wanted to get their hair and nails done before they shipped out. Time was short and they needed to do a lot before they debarked. The following day was nothing but errands for each one. Letters were written and mailed. Hair and last minute purchases of clothes and other sundries was another priority for most. There was no time for relaxation as they prepared to go. Viv was out of commission with her VD anyway. Dorrie usually followed Viv's lead as the aggressor, so she hung back too with Viv sidelined. Jenny was walking back from the base post office to the dorm when she spotted Viv alone outside smoking a cigarette. None of the girls had smoked when they first got to basic but now Viv and Dorrie definitely and even Bea occasionally all smoked. Jenny noticed Viv's concerned face as she approached. "Hey, Viv. You look worried. Maybe you should quit that smoking," Jenny said, with a smile trying to cheer her friend. "Smoking is the least of my concerns," Viv stated. "Jenny, can I tell you something?" "Sure." "Well, not even Dorrie knows this but I'm part Gypsy. At least that is what my mother told me when I was little. My aunt even thought I had the gift," Viv explained. "What gift?" "I see things sometimes. Things that are going to happen." "That's not possible..." "I told my aunt last April that we were going to have a lousy Christmas," Viv said. "Well, you may just have thought that for some other ... " "When I was ten I could tell my dad was dying before the doctors. He died that year," Viv confessed. "That may be just a coincidence ... " "Jenny, I have to tell you something but you must keep it between us." "Why?" "The rest aren't as strong as you and me. Sure Dorrie puts up a good front but other than liking to suck guys' dicks, she is a wimp at heart. May too. Bea is stronger, but even she has her moments. You are the only one I can confide in," Viv stated. "Me! Why would you think I'm stronger than ... " "You are. You may not realize it but you are. You have internal strength these others lack," Viv claimed. "I don't know, Viv. Bea is pretty ... " "Will you keep a secret or not?" "Well, sure. If you want me to." "Jenny, I've had a premonition that at least one of us will not survive this war," Viv stated emphatically. "Viv! You can't be serious! Don't say that or even think ... " "It's true! I feel it as sure as I've ever felt anything, Jenny." "Oh, my god! That can't be ... " "It is! I know it." "One of us five? You sure?" "Well, it might include Charlotte but yes, I'm sure," Viv concluded. "That just can't be, Viv. How could we ... " "I don't know how or why yet but I can tell you it's true." "Oh, that's terrible." "I know. That is why you can't tell anyone else." "Why did you tell me this?" "I had to tell someone. It's been eating me up inside for days now," Viv explained. "Oh, my god. You sure it wasn't something else. Maybe a sickness ... " "No! One of us is going to die," Viv proclaimed. "Oh, geez," Jenny said, trembling from the image now cast before her. "Please keep your promise and don't tell the others," Viv demanded. "I will," Jenny agreed, unsure if she had the strength like Viv thought to deal with this. Jenny was so disturbed by the news, May picked up on it, and asked her what was wrong as they packed together. Jenny somewhat lied and said it had to do with Brad again. The next day they loaded in a waiting truck with all their gear and drove to the docks to meet Charlotte. The whole island seemed to be in the same state of packing and departing. Signs of preparations for the sailing of the task force could be seen everywhere. Truckloads of sailors and marines drove past on their way to ships of their own. At the docks, huge naval ships of all kinds could be seen making preparations to leave. Several aircraft carriers were taking on supplies and planes were being loaded onto their flight decks and into their lower hangar decks. The girls watched from the back of the truck the dizzying madness of work as the task force assembled to leave. They sped along the docks past many ships until the truck finally came to a halt next to a white ship with a red cross on the side. One of the drivers appeared at the back. "Out here, ladies," he said smiling at them. "This is it, huh," Viv said, departing the back of the truck. "It sure is. Your home for a few weeks anyway," the driver added. He helped them unload their stuff as did the other sailor. Two sailors approached from the gangplank and grabbed as much gear as they could carrier. "This way, ladies," one said. They all grabbed things until all were accounted for. They followed the sailors to the gangplank and up. Jenny noticed Charlotte waiting for them at the top. "Morning, nurses," Charlotte yelled as they approached. "Welcome abroad M3." They all exchanged greetings and Charlotte led them below to their quarters. She showed them to their bunks and then to the operating rooms, patient care rooms, and the like. Jenny and the others were not accustomed to the cramped quarters. Everything they needed was there but in so much less space than normal. Unlike Midway, they would all be in the same room on this ship. Charlotte left them to unpack but with orders to meet topside by the forward helicopter pad in thirty minutes. The women hurried to stow their gear. The room was tight but somehow they managed to stow all their gear. In exactly thirty minutes they were on deck. Charlotte approached with Doctor Sanford. They exchanged greetings and Doctor Sanford explained the various procedures and protocols that would be needed on board. He was deep into his discussion when the nurses noticed a smartly uniformed man who was obviously the captain of the ship approach. Doctor Sanford stopped talking when the captain reached them but told them they would resume the briefing later. He then deferred to the captain. "Well, ladies. Welcome abroad M3. I am Captain John C. Marshall. I trust your stay with us will be more than you bargained for. All I ask is that you do your duty. Pay strict adherence to regulations and follow orders. Doctor Sanford is your team leader and Nurse Charlotte is your head nurse. Two other teams of nurses like yourself will be arriving shortly. They are newer recruits with less experience than you from Midway. Ensign Moore has convinced Doctor Sanford and me to give you five the day shift. We expect that may be our busiest time. I would encourage you to help teach the other recruits from your experience. My door is always open to anyone but I expect you to respect the chain of command. Do you all understand?" "Yes, sir," the nurses all said in unison. "Very well. Carry on," the Captain said and departed with Doctor Sanford. "Wow, Charlotte," Bea whispered under her breath as the two men walked away. "Things are by the book around here, ladies," Charlotte said, with a particular eye to Viv and Dorrie. "This is not a picnic ship and quite different from Midway. I expect you all to be on your best behavior here. Is that understood?" "Yes, Ma'am," they all responded. "Good. When we are in mixed company please call me Ensign Moore - regulations and all ya'all know," Charlotte stated, with her North Carolina accent showing. "Now, ya'all are trained and ready for this but don't expect things to be easier around here than Midway. Not likely," Charlotte added. "In fact, I get the distinct indication we are in for some tough action. So be ready to react. I'll be looking for volunteers to join me and two of the other ensigns as surgical nurses. We will help train you on board." "Do we know where we are headed, Ma'am?" Bea asked. "Well, not much more than I already told you. We set sail tonight after most of the other ships depart. We are headed for the Solomons like I clued you but I still don't know where exactly. I may never know until we are there." "Are we headed somewhere dangerous?" May asked. "May, look around you. They're not assembling this armada to go turkey shooting," Charlotte stated. "Oh, my," May groaned. The others also took in a deep breath. Jenny and Viv exchanged glances. "I want you all to go below and prepare all the work rooms for operation. I will join you later and I want to see us ready for full scale operations. Is that understood?" "Yes, Ma'am," they echoed. "Okay, then. Dismissed," Charlotte said and departed. "I'm scared," May offered, as they stood there briefly shocked. The loading of supplies continued all around them. In the distance they could see a few submarines already departing. The whole scene was one of blistering activity and preparations. They started walking back to their stations. "I think we're all a bit nervous," Dorrie said, trying to reassure May. "They expect us to train other nurses. We're barely out of basic ourselves," Bea claimed. "I guess these nurses are coming direct from basic," Viv added. "They're in for a shock I think," Dorrie continued. "Anyone going to volunteer for surgical duty?" Viv asked. "Not me," May proclaimed. "If they don't get any volunteers, they'll pick someone," Viv remarked. "What about you, Jenny? You're awful quiet," Dorrie observed. "Just thinking about all we just heard," Jenny replied. They headed below to get started. One of the orderlies named Jeff showed them to the storage room. They had several orderlies help them with boxes of bandages, instruments, and other medical supplies. They spent several hours making sure everything was stowed and prepared for the first day. Another nurse named Ensign Margaret Walker helped them prepare the operating room by telling them what the needed supplies were. She was Charlotte's counterpart and would handle second shift duties. Her team of nurses was due in from San Diego. They had landed and were due to the ship within an hour. They had just finished when Charlotte arrived. Ensign Margaret greeted Charlotte but left to meet her group of arriving nurses. Charlotte toured what they had done and was pleased with the work they had finished. She had not expected them to do the operating room but was glad Margaret was there to guide them. They talked briefly on procedures and other practices but decided to finish the discussions over lunch in the mess hall. "The food is great on board," Charlotte said, as they sat with their filled plates. "It's even better than the mess at Midway." "So, Charlotte, tell us. How is the good doctor?" Viv asked, with a smile. "He's well, Viv. Thanks for asking," Charlotte said, with a wink to Viv. "Jenny got letters from both Jerry and Brad," Dorrie told Charlotte. "So, Jenny, both guys want to propose yet," Charlotte said, joking with Jenny. "They probably would if she gave them half an opening," Bea claimed and laughed. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 01 "Funny, you all. Just because I have interest in a couple of patients you guys ... " "Interest she calls it!" Viv exclaimed loudly. "Oh, yeah! Interest between the sheets," Dorrie proclaimed chuckling. "Dorrie! Now don't make it seem so lurid ... " "Lurid! Don't use those fancy words on us, sister. Dirty old plain sex is what it is," Viv stated jokingly. "You guys are terrible," Jenny responded, but smiled with the jokes. "Charlotte, don't let them convince you it's any more than ... " "Brazen sex!" Bea yelled and they all cracked up. As the nurses finished eating and took their trays to the wash station they noticed many of the sailors that were eating also giving them the eye. A couple winked but didn't say anything, probably because Ensign Charlotte was there. As they walked out of the mess and ascended towards the main deck they ran into Ensign Margaret coming back down with her team of nurses. Introductions were made all around. The new recruits were Peggy, Laura, Millie, Beth, and Mary. They all gave their names and told where they were from but it became confusing and afterwards the nurses tried to recall who was from where. They realized after everyone put their two cents in that they totally couldn't remember who was from where. They only remembered that they were all from different states than they were and Peggy and Beth were from New Jersey. The nurses walked the deck watching the activity from around the docks and the various ships. An aircraft carrier was leaving which could have been the Enterprise. A small crowd of wives and other family and friends waved from the dock as the massive ship departed. A lot of the ships had embarked already making them believe they would be soon. Bea, Dorrie, and Viv all had a cigarette by the railing on one side and waved to some of the whistling dock workers and sailors. A squad of marines walked by and one of them recognized Dorrie and yelled her name. She blushed red from the implication. Charlotte had walked along with Jenny. "How is Brad?" Charlotte asked. "He's healing physically okay and using artificial limbs but his mental attitude is not great," Jenny explained. "He's not as depressed as he was before you met, is he?" "I think he might be reverting back, Charlotte." "Oh, that is bad. You know, you did an incredible job with him. I know you got emotionally involved too which is not always good. You are a great nurse, Jenny. But you can't save all these poor boys from their individual fates," Charlotte concluded. "I know but he was a special case for me," Jenny stated. "Well, I only mention it because you will probably have many more cases like his if I guess right. Don't let them all get to you, Jenny, or you're going to end up an emotional mess yourself," Charlotte advised. "Thanks for the advice, Charlotte. I'll try not to," Jenny said. "Good." "Charlotte, I've been thinking about your request for volunteers for the OR." "You want to volunteer. I was hoping of all the nurses, you would." "You think I can do it? I don't want to let Doctor Sanford or you down." "Jenny, I won't kid you that it will be easy in there. Tensions can run pretty hot some times, to say nothing of the physical and emotion demands. But I will tell you it is rewarding beyond belief to be part of helping save lives and watching them recover. My belief is you would be a good OR nurse." "I'd like to give it a try then," Jenny concluded. "You sure? It's a big step. Some of the wounded are in terrible shape and it will threaten to break your heart. You will definitely learn to hate war quickly, if you don't already." "I believe I do already. I want to help the best way I can." "Okay. I'll talk to Doctor Sanford but I'm sure he will agree. He thinks highly of you especially after your success with Brad West." "Thanks. I'll try not to let you both down," Jenny claimed. "I trust you won't, Jenny," Charlotte allowed. The next twenty-four hours were hectic. The ship departed port just before dusk. They had met the last group of nurses and all the names were starting to run together. The food was better than on Midway all the girls agreed. Sleeping was not. The bunks were cramped and the rocking of the boat made May and several other girls sick. Other than some minor injuries they had nothing to do but prepare. One sailor tripped down a stairwell and broke a finger, but that was the extent of their worst case so far. Most of the larger ships had medical staff on board that could handle minor injuries and even immediate trauma situations. It wasn't until the third day at sea they actually had a man transferred over from a ship. He had a badly broken leg from a shell that had slipped off its dolly as it was being transported. After two weeks at sea even May no longer got sick. They had covered nearly 4,000 miles, skirting around the Gilbert Islands. The last 1,000 miles they had deployed anti-submarine tactics and steamed in a zigzag pattern. Nighttime running was done without lights to avoid detection from long range reconnaissance planes. They ran under radio silence and signaled between ships using large flood lights and Morse code. Despite the boredom as they neared their destination everyone grew more and more nervous and anxious. "Have you felt it?" Margaret said to the first shift nurses, as the second shift came on duty. "Felt what, Ma'am?" Bea asked. "The ship has slowed and I can't see as many of the task force ships ahead of us as before," Margaret stated. "What do you think that means?" May queried. "I think things are going to start soon," Margaret claimed. "What day is it? Viv asked. "August seventh," Margaret answered. "Where are we?" May asked. "No one's sure," Margaret said. "What makes you think things are going to start, Ma'am? Dorrie questioned. "Think about it, Dorrie. Would you want your hospital ship in the middle of an engagement? Not likely. Why else would we be slowing and losing sight of the other ships?" "I guess you're right at that, Ma'am," Dorrie replied. Charlotte walked in at that moment. She had been called to Doctor Sanford's office before the shift change. "What's happening, Ma'am?" Jenny asked as Charlotte approached. "What do you mean?" "The ship appears to have slowed," Margaret told Charlotte. "I know," said Charlotte. "I want you all to be ready for action. I have no other news now but to tell you time is short." "But what is going to happen?" May asked nervously. "I don't know for sure but I suspect we are near our destination and that a major offensive is about to begin. Just be ready to move when I say," Charlotte concluded. "Margaret, can I speak with you please?" "Sure," Margaret said and followed Charlotte from the patient's room. The nurses did not know it but as they were speaking the war was about to take a decidedly different and dramatic turn. The task force was north of the largest island in the Solomons. An island called Guadalcanal. They were in Sealark Sound between Savo Island, Florida Island and Lunga Point on Guadalcanal. The Japanese had nearly finished construction of an airfield on Lunga Point. Once finished that airfield would be a serious threat to the shipping lanes between the United States and Australia. The Allies could not allow the Japanese to complete this airfield and gain air superiority. The U. S. First Marine Division was in the process of landing on Lunga Point to seize the airfield. Another amphibious and paratrooper landing, primarily by the 1st Marine Raiders, was taking place on Florida Island and on nearby Tulagi Island. A naval bombardment of both Red Beach on Guadalcanal and Tulagi preceded the amphibious assaults. The Japanese having landed on Tulagi on May 3rd were planning on building a seaplane base there. The Allies wanted to take the Islands to help the invasion of Guadalcanal and keep the Japanese from using it for operations against them. The Japanese were caught somewhat by surprise and their first initial air response was ineffective in stopping the landings. The Japanese constructing the airfield fled into the jungle to avoid capture and The Fifth Regiment, which had landed first, took the airfield without loss of life. The Division pushed inland after securing the airfield. It took them three days to gain six miles with Japanese counter attacks. But finally The Second Battalion of The First Regiment reached the Lunga River. During the first three days the Americans dug in and established defensive positions along the beach and around the airfield. They were under constant attack from planes and even shelling from a Jap submarine. The second night the Japanese struck back with a bombing run on their own airfield, which had been renamed Henderson Field. The jungle was extremely thick and the bugs, rats and snakes were horrific. The weather was oppressively hot and humid. It rained often and the ground around them became ankle deep mud. The Marines worked furiously to complete the airfield and make it operational. The transports were still being unloaded two days after the initial landing. One of the US transport ships, the USS Elliott was destroyed by the Japanese. The first job of the task force was to support the amphibious assault and allow the transports the necessary days to completely unload at Lunga Point. However, the commander of the carrier group, Admiral Fletcher decided to withdraw his carriers to avoid risking them in Sealark Sound. He made this decision because he lost twenty-one planes from his carriers within the first two days. They had been used to shoot down Japanese planes and drive off Japanese attempts from Rabaul, over 1100 miles away, to bomb the airport and the marines. The carrier planes had played a vital role in derailing the Japanese first attempts at recapturing the airfield. Admiral Fletcher also claimed to be low on fuel and with the airfield secured, wasn't needed anymore. The carriers were really supposed to support the screening force protecting the transports the entire time but the Admiral chose otherwise. That unfortunate move by Admiral Fletcher set the stage for the Battle of Savo Island on August 8th. The Japanese, under the command of Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa, who took over the newly formed 8th Fleet out of Raboul, after a failed re-enforcement attempt, attacked with seven cruisers and one destroyer on the night of August eighth. They passed through the New Georgia Sound, later to be called "The Slot", and attacked around Savo Island in a daring nighttime assault. The Japanese navy had trained heavily in nighttime battle and believed they had the tactical advantage in the dark. It proved to be true and a brilliant maneuver. The Battle of Savo Island was one of the first ship versus ship battles of the Pacific War. The previous early navy battles had been mostly between carriers. The Americans allowed themselves to be taken by surprised by Admiral Mikawa. His brazen night attacked proved successful and cost the Americans and their Allies four cruisers and damaged several more ships, with only minimal damage to his ships. It was a shocking defeat for the overly-confident U.S Navy and showed the nighttime superiority of the Japanese navy. However, Admiral Mikawa also made a supreme tactical mistake that could have produced an entirely different outcome in the battle for Guadalcanal. Unsure of where the American carriers were and against the advice of several of his subordinates, he decided to totally withdraw after the battle and before daybreak. If he had pressed the attack, he could have gained the upper hand in Sealark Sound and left the invading marines without their naval support. Even with the American carriers in the area that would have been disastrous for the ground forces on Guadalcanal. Back on M3 the nurses had been working non-stop shifts since the battle began. The helicopters were ferrying in wounded and dying constantly. At first the wounded were mostly marines but as the sea battle raged sailors and naval officers outnumbered the marines. Instead of eight hour shifts, everyone was working twelve hour shifts with barely enough time in between to grab meals, a shower, and sleep. Jenny's on the job training in the OR was beyond intense. In just a matter of days, she went from a novice to a full blown OR nurse. She was so busy she couldn't even stop to think of all the human carnage she saw before her. Charlotte kept encouraging her which helped her carry on. The volume of work allowed her not to focus on the individual lives passing before her. She became totally numb by the fourth day. If she didn't get a break soon, she felt sure she would crack. Fortunately she was not alone in that feeling which helped. Everyone was under immense strain and close to the breaking point. When their shift ended and they finally got a break, Viv, Dorrie, and Bea headed topside to have a smoke. May and Jenny went along for the fresh air. Jenny looked at the others light up and almost gave in to the urge. It seemed a welcome way to relieve some of the incredible tension they all felt. "God, damn," Viv said. "This is fuckin' insane." "Take me back to Midway," Dorrie chimed in. "Jenny, how the hell are you holding up?" Viv asked, knowing the OR was the most intense of all. "I feel tired and numb," Jenny stated. "God, I'd be a loon by now if I was you," Bea said. "I'm getting close," Jenny allowed, looking out over the water. "Hang in there, girl. None of us want to replace you," Viv added. The women hung on the deck for only a few minutes. They had to eat and get to bed. A quick shower and they would be back on the job in the morning. Walking back towards their bunks they passed by Doctor Sanford's quarters. Charlotte was just emerging as they approached. She had that just fucked look that they all knew well from seeing Viv and Dorrie return from many nights out. Charlotte smiled at them as they passed. She smelled of sex. "Lucky lady," Viv said when they were out of earshot of Charlotte. "She has a man to help her forget all this for a moment." "I could use a nice dick to relax with," Dorrie said with a giggle. The rest giggled along with her and chastised her for being so crass. The next days were more of the same. Air, sea, and land battles continued as the Japanese fought hard to retake Henderson Field. The Allies, working non-stop, had managed to complete it quickly and were already using the field for flight operations despite constant attempts by the Japanese to bomb the airfield. The nurse's duties were extremely difficult. Midway had been a dream compared to the grievously wounded and dying they saw on M3. Two weeks into the campaign, their nerves were nearly shattered for everyone one of them, but especially the OR nurses. Jenny felt like she had been catapulted into hell never to return to normal life. Tensions were high, leading to quarrels among the nurses over little things, exaggerated by the cramped conditions. The quarrels were soon patched over as everyone realized the strain that each of them was under. Charlotte and the other head nurses tried their best to keep moral high, telling them all they needed to be up for the patients. Two major carrier battles, several ship to ship battles, and many other submarine and other engagements had them never short of wounded to attend to. The helicopters ferrying the wounded were being taxed so hard that one had gone down. Fortunately everyone survived but for a while they were short of transport. The outcome of the struggle for Guadalcanal was very much in doubt for many months. The evidence of Japanese superiority in nighttime naval battles could not be refuted. If not for the Americans' overwhelming ability to replenish lost planes, ships, and men in short order, the battle for Guadalcanal might have turned another way. The heavy losses to both sides were much more severe to the Japanese. On land the battles were insane and the conditions horrendous. Almost as many marines and soldiers ended up in the hospital from dysentery, malaria, and other pests and diseases as were the wounded. The Americans repulsed wave after wave of Japanese attempts to overrun the airfield. Despite incredible resistance the troops managed to keep Henderson Field operational which was probably the turning point of the campaign. Sealark Sound was soon to be renamed Iron Bottom Sound from the incredible amount of lost ships on both sides. The planes from Henderson Field inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese trying desperately to reinforce and take the offensive in the battle for Guadalcanal. Collaborating with some locals the marines and soldiers on Guadalcanal were able to prove the fallacies of the Japanese land forces' war doctrine when faced with a determined, trained, and superior fire power force. A month into the Guadalcanal Campaign the Allied Forces had completed a base on Tulagi. It was a make-shift affair but a temporary field hospital was established there. Charlotte approached the nurses with the prospect of moving off the ship to work there. Doctor Sanford was being put in charge, therefore Charlotte and the first shift nurses were given first choice to join him. After little discussion they all readily agreed. Even though they knew the work wouldn't be any better, they all opted for a land assignment and more room to work. The shift was made during the day as the Japanese were the most active at night. The nurses immediately wondered why they had chosen this assignment as soon as they saw the hastily constructed buildings and the climatic conditions in which they would be working. The cots they had for beds were only slightly better than the berths on the ship. At least they didn't sway, one of the nurses stated. The buildings were little more than huts and the hospital looked more like an airfield hanger than a true hospital. The first few days were long and hard setting up the hospital with supplies and preparing the OR. A complement of marines and soldiers guarded the base and were equally busy preparing for air raids and possible ground assault. This knowledge gave the nurses even fewer feelings of security. Discussions of what might happen to them if they were ever captured by the Japanese had all of them petrified and given to nightmares. As soon as they were organized the wounded were ferried in by helicopter and now ships. In short order they were back into the hell of the war, only now they had to work in stifling weather conditions. Killing bugs and changing sweaty clothes became a constant affair. They had running water but a hot water heater was yet to be installed so they had to make do with cold showers. Privacy was also much reduced from the ship. The women had to use the same showers and toilets as the men and therefore shifts were assigned. Many times the nurses were cheered and whistled at by lonely soldiers as they moved from dorm to showers and back. Two weeks into the new assignment, life though extremely hard and exhausting, was gaining a level of routine they all found comforting. Several other nurses had joined them to make two twelve hour shifts possible. A couple more doctors joined too but Doctor Sanford remained in charge. With several nurses working floating shifts as well, eventually they were give one day a week off. It didn't take long for Viv and Dorrie to resume entertaining the troops as if it was their sworn duty. Viv was given a clean bill of health by Doctor Sanford which meant she could resume her unrestrained sexual activities. They told the other nurses it was the best form of relief from the horrific strain they all found themselves under. Even Jenny was goaded into admitting once that she could use some loving. It was a constant joke among the nurses in the few light moments they had together. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 01 Viv's reputation for being an easy lay and Dorrie's as the blowjob queen soon spread across the base. The constant requests of them to attend hastily put together parties by the troops became more than the two could handle. They took to inviting the others in an effort to spread the fun. Bea went on a few occasions but May and Jenny held back. Jenny had struck up a friendship with a few more recovering patients but took most everyone's advise and tried to stay emotionally unattached. May had also met one patient she fancied but tried not to get too involved. After a month on the island Jenny and May allowed themselves to be coerced into going to a party. What was amazing was how these GI's could always find booze and even a record player in conditions like this. Once at the party, both girls' dance cards were constantly being punched. Jenny's beauty had practically ever sailor, marine, and soldier on the island seeking her company. A couple of officers and even one of the other doctors were pursuing getting to know her better. The base commander was a handsome marine major that ruled with serious discipline but his men all loved him. He was tall and very handsome, all the nurses thought. He had a strong jaw and sandy blonde hair. He was eight years older than most of the nurses and his mature demeanor and leadership skills had all the nurses talking about him. Of course, it was Jenny that caught his eye. His face seemed to soften when he saw her and even Jenny, in a weak moment, admitted to May and Bea that he made her feel a bit squishy in her belly when he looked at her. Around the third party that all the nurses attended, May took particular interest in one soldier. He seemed to dominate May's dance card and it was obviously not by accident on her part either. It was also at that same party, larger than many of the previous ones, at which the major showed up. He ran a tight ship but knew the soldiers and nurses needed rest and relaxation to maintain their sanity and moral. All the nurses took amused note when he asked Jenny to dance. It turned into one of many dances that night. As the party was winding down and the major had already excused himself to attend to base matters, Bea approached May and Jenny with a hushed tone. "They just left," Bea stated. "Who?" May asked naively. "Viv and Dorrie," Bea said, as if May should have guessed who she meant. "Off again," Jenny said amusingly. "Yeah, you want to follow them this time and see what they're up to?" Bea asked mischievously. "It's not nice to spy on them ... " May started to say. "Oh, don't be such a goodie-two-shoes, May," Bea exclaimed. "It would be fun to see where they go and want they do. You in Jenny?" To May's somewhat surprise Jenny agreed, "Yeah, let's do it," she whispered giggling. The few drinks they had all had probably helped with their mellow moods but the idea of tailing the two wanton sluts appealed to them. At least it did to Bea and Jenny with May agreeing to go along at the last minute. Bea led the way as they stalked the two provocative nurses as they met up with a group of nearly ten marines and sailors outside the mess hall where most of the parties were held. It was obvious they had been waiting there and many were either drunk or close to it. Viv and Dorrie were not much better as they passed a bottle around with them. The GIs were trying to ply them with liquor even though it probably wasn't even necessary. The three spying nurses followed them silently around several buildings, past the barracks, and towards the showers. "Aha," Bea whispered. "The scene of their illicit activities." "It's not going to be easy to spy on them in there," Jenny astutely pointed out, knowing the showers were by nature somewhat private. The party goers ahead were making enough noise that the three trailing spies didn't need to worry too much about being heard or even noticed. The group in front disappeared around the side of the showers leading to the front door. The spies raced ahead to the side of the showers and peeked around the edge of the building. They just managed to see the last of the group disappear inside but then one guy, drink in hand, appeared as if he was appointed as a guard. They couldn't get any closer without being spotted. "There's no way we're going to see anything without being caught," May exclaimed. "She's right," Bea joined in, also in a whisper not to be heard. "Yeah," Jenny agreed, looking around. The back of the latrine and showers faced towards the dense jungle of vegetation. They had never been around the back but the prospect of checking back there didn't appeal to Jenny or the others too much. The side that they were on had no windows and they knew the front only had the one open doorway where they would certainly be seen. Jenny eased around the side, towards the back, with Bea and a reluctant May following closely. Jenny had never gone hunting with her father or brother but was not unaccustomed to nature. She had often followed animal tracks with her brother and had grown up close to nature in Nebraska. This was not Nebraska though and there were animals, bugs, and snakes here that Jenny didn't know and didn't want to meet in the dark. She did notice that the underbrush appeared partly trampled close to the building, which was curious. Jenny reached the backside and peered around. The jungle came right up to within five feet of the building. A small pile of building waste from the construction of the showers was evident. There were no windows on the back either but there was an old pallet leaning against the back of the wall. As Jenny looked at it and then further up she noticed a beam of light streaming through a small hole she had never noticed before from inside. It was high up but one could climb the pallet like a ladder and possibly look inside. Jenny moved around the corner. "Where the hell you going?" Bea whispered. "I see something," Jenny stated. "What?" Bea asked, following her around the corner. "What are you two doing?" May questioned. Jenny walked to where the pallet was, looked up, and then started to climb up the rungs of the pallet. Bea watched her, looked up to find the source of the light too, and then stood behind her to hold her legs. May watched what they were doing from the corner. Jenny got up to the top rung and gingerly held onto the plank walls for support. Bea's hands on her legs gave her only a little more comfort as she aligned herself with the hole. She was about four feet off the ground and could still barely see in the hole. It was a knot hole in the plank that had fallen out or been purposely knocked out. It was no bigger than a quarter but as Jenny put her eye close to the hole she could clearly see two of the four shower stalls. If the curtains were open, as they were now, you easily could see whoever was in the shower. It immediately made Jenny thinking back to the number of showers she had taken using those two showers stalls versus the other two. It had been a few. 'Whoever put this pallet against the wall might have already seen me naked,' she realized. 'These stinkin' sailors,' she thought, as she too looked through the hole. With the lights on inside the showers everything was illuminated nicely. The activity before her eyes almost made her gasp too loud. It got a reaction from Bea though. "What is it? What do you see?" Bea inquired softly. "Wait," Jenny whispered, and then returned to looking. Jenny couldn't see Viv but Dorrie was seated on the bench outside the two stalls and along the wall. It was normally used to hold personal items while someone was in the shower, things the hooks weren't good for like toiletries. Dorrie was seated on the bench with three guys in front of her and two more milling around watching. The three guys before her each had their pants down and their dicks out. Dorrie had her mouth around the penis of the guy in the middle and her hands jerking off the other two. 'Or is she just getting or keeping them hard until she is ready to suck them?' Jenny thought. Jenny intently watched Dorrie's mouth bobbing up and down on the guy's cock in her mouth. His head was back and he had moved a hand behind her head. She could barely make out sounds especially over the lurid comments the other guys were making. She heard. "Hurry up, Dorrie. I need some of that." "Wait your turn, Stan," someone said. "Look at her suck that dick." "She's the best." As Jenny watched, the guy Dorrie was blowing started to shake a little and then groan loudly. Jenny watched, like she had that first time back on Midway, when Dorrie blew Jerry. She watched as Dorrie's cheeks bulged slightly and it was obvious to her that Dorrie was taking the guy's cum load into her mouth. Jenny watched, glued to the hole, as Dorrie finished him off and swallowed his cum. As that guy staggered away, one of the others in her hands moved over. Jenny heard Dorrie speak. "Nice thick load, Karl," Dorrie stated to the retreating man. "Thanks, Dorrie," he said. "There's always more for you in these here balls." "Sweet too. You ready, honey?" Dorrie asked looking at the guy before her. "What's your name?" "Phil," the guy with the average sized stiff cock inches from her lips said. Dorrie sucked the head into her mouth without hesitation. She slurped on that with her lips and tongue before taking nearly the rest of the guy's cock into her mouth and down her throat, making the guy groan loudly. He was not huge but it was impressive to Jenny still. She was getting into watching the scene when she felt Bea patting her leg anxiously. "My turn," Bea whispered. Jenny gave way and climbed down. Bea replaced her on the pallet but had to stand on her tiptoes to see through the hole. Jenny realized the reason she had never noticed the hole before was it was probably close to seven to eight feet off the floor inside the showers. Even if she had noticed it, it would have been difficult to imagine anyone up that high trying to look in, but obviously someone had. It made her shudder a little to think of some guy or maybe dozens checking her out as she got out of the shower. Bea turned from the hole and whispered down to Jenny now holding her legs. May had reluctantly joined them at the bottom of the pallet. "Holy shit! Dorrie just swallowed some guy's sperm," she exclaimed softly. "Let me see," May requested. "Wait a second," Bea replied. "They're taking her top off." Bea watched for a short while more then gave May a turn. Being taller than Jenny or Bea, May had it easier to see through the hole. She watched Dorrie suck off two more guys before once again it was Jenny's turn. Jenny repositioned herself on the pallet with May holding her legs this time. The mosquitos had found them and were swarming like hungry vampires. The girls were trying to quietly slap them away but the one on the pallet was left to just get bit. Jenny looked through the hole once more and saw Dorrie naked from the waist up still sucking cock. She wished she could see what Viv was doing but a wall blocked the view of the other side of the showers. She could hear noises in between the chatter, however, that sounded a lot like a woman's groans from getting fucked. Dorrie still had four or five guys in the room with her. Jenny looked around to see if she recognized any of them. She didn't know any of their names but several of them looked familiar. One guy was black and Jenny watched as he stroked his dick waiting his turn. The guy in Dorrie's mouth groaned and Jenny watched as she finished him off. The black guy was next and he stepped forward. Dorrie took the black guy's cock in her hand and smiled up at him. He had a nice sized cock, not huge, but plenty big enough. Dorrie watched his face as she took his cock into her mouth. Jenny was no racist but she knew plenty of men and even women back home that would have called Dorrie some terrible names not only for sucking dicks like this but doing a black guy. It was such a dirty thing to watch but somehow it made Jenny horny. She could feel her own juices stir as she watched Dorrie suck the black cock. Her saliva made it shine in the bright lights of the showers. Jenny watched a little longer then gave Bea and May turns. The girls took shorter turns as the mosquitoes were driving them crazy now. They started to leave but before they did they quietly pushed the pallet away from the wall and onto the ground. Jenny had the idea that anyone peeking in might know now their game had been discovered. They worked back around the side of the building. They peeked around the front to make sure the coast was clear before they darted for the safety of the dorms. Jenny saw two guys leaving and talking quietly. A new guy was arriving, probably just to go to the bathroom. He was being told something by the guard at the door. Jenny then saw him go inside. They scurried across the open field to the nurses' quarters. They made it inside and to their beds without being caught. The three buzzed about what they had seen as they got ready for bed. When Jenny slid beneath the covers she still felt horny from watching Dorrie service all those guys. Images of cocks spewing their seed filled her head making it hard for her to sleep. Even putting her hands between her legs and pressing hard against her sex did little to quiet the dull ache she felt. Jenny could hear Bea tossing in bed and wondered if she was feeling the same way. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 02 Book Two, Chapter Two This is a fictional account. Sorry for the delay but I tried to include pictures to augment the story but either Literotica or I can't seem to figure it out so here it is again without the illustrations. *** May shook Jenny's foot, waking her all too early. At least that was what Jenny thought as she moaned and tried to roll over. "Get up, both of you," May yelled. "It can't be time already," Jenny heard Bea say. Jenny had not slept well. Her sexual frustration, after witnessing the sordid activities of Viv and Dorrie in the showers last night, had her tossing and turning for a while before she finally fell asleep. Bea must have had the same reaction, because she seemed to be in the same sleepy state. "Can't we have five more minutes?" Jenny pleaded with May. "Suit yourself but, if you want breakfast before the start of our twelve hour shift, you better get your buns out of bed, both of you," May proclaimed. "You'd make a good head nurse," Bea stated as she sat up in bed. "You've got the crabby discipline down, already." Jenny laughed but May shot back, "If I didn't have to head nurse you, all would be well." "Now, now; only fooling with you," Bea claimed. "Well, if you hadn't been fussing so much last night before falling asleep, you might feel better," May quipped. "I heard you jumping around in bed before I fell asleep." "Yeah, I was a bit restless," Bea admitted smiling wearily. "Me too," Jenny agreed. "I think I was dreaming about riding Prince," Bea said, but laughed right away. "Is Prince your horse back home?" May asked naively. "No. This was Prince Charming," Bea exulted. Jenny laughed heartily but May only frowned. "Funny, Bea," she said. The nurses got up, and it took all three of them to wake Viv and Dorrie. With the oppressive heat, everyone started the day with a shower. The nurses all made their way across the short field in robes for their short window of free time in the showers, each thinking in their own minds about the night before. Two of them had wild sex in the showers, with lots of guys, after the party. The others had witnessed it all, and had run across this very field in the dark, to keep from being caught spying on them. May and Bea were the quickest and grabbed the first two showers. Jenny and Dorrie beat Viv, so she had to wait for a stall to open up. However, this put Jenny and Dorrie in one of the two back stalls. Jenny looked up to the hole, expecting to see an eye peering in, but there was none. Even so, it made her nervous to strip before entering the shower. Jenny took a quick shower and Viv was able to follow her. When Jenny exited the shower, she once again glanced to the hole, hoping not to see someone watching her drying off. As Jenny dried, she watched Viv drop her robe and enter the shower. She tried not to stare but, when she saw the bluish bruises on Viv's tits, she couldn't help herself. As Viv entered the shower and closed the curtain, Jenny also saw a few other bruises on her hips and rear. 'My god,' Jenny thought. 'What do those guys do to her?' From that point, onward, the day quickly resembled so many others. Fresh wounded and sick arrived almost constantly, from either Guadalcanal or ships. The nurses worked without break until 1:30, when they got a half-hour break for lunch. To have even five minutes to themselves before needing to head back, they all hurried each day to the mess hall to grab food fast. The mess hall was open about twenty hours a day, so there was always food. The nurses grabbed their plates of the day's surprise food and headed to a far table. They liked to sit alone despite offers constantly from the Marines and sailors. If they ate quickly, they had time for two cigarettes for those who smoked and a few minutes of conversation, if they hurried. Jenny was sitting near Viv when Dorrie got up to get more juice and talk with a sailor over a cigarette. The sailor, who May liked, joined May and Bea at the table which gave Viv and Jenny a moment alone. "Still think I'm wrong about one of us not making it, after living in this hell hole for a while?" Viv stated. "I don't know if you're right or wrong," Jenny replied, "but I certainly pray you're wrong." "It might surprise you, I do too," Viv allowed. "I hope I'm wrong, too, but I know differently." "Any clue who, or why?" Jenny asked, and then thought better. "On second thought, don't tell me. I don't want to know. That would be even worse." "No, not yet, so you're safe," Viv said. They were silent for a minute as Viv smoked and Jenny stared off into the distance by the docks. It was a bright sunny day and, under different circumstances, Jenny could see herself at the beach or on a picnic, enjoying the beautiful hot day. "You noticed earlier," Viv claimed. "Noticed what?" "In the showers, you noticed my bruises." "Yes." "You probably guessed how I got them, huh?" Viv queried. "Yes," Jenny said, but didn't tell they had watched too. "It's okay," Viv said. "Why do you let them hurt you?" Jenny asked. "They don't mean to. It's only play and some of it actually feels good. They're just drunk, mostly, and don't realize how hard sometimes," Viv professed, but sadly. "Viv, are you okay? Why do you let them do it to you like that?" "I guess I just don't care, Jenny. I'd rather give these poor suckers a good time than worry about myself. Maybe it's why I'm here, in the first place. Dorrie, too. We're only nurses during the day. Sometimes I wonder if our real duty isn't to allow these poor bastards a minute or two of pleasure before they potentially sacrifice themselves. Some of 'em are gonna die, and they don't even really understand what they're sacrificing their lives for!" "You and Dorrie can't single-handedly solve all their problems, or please all these guys," Jenny stated. "We know that. But at least we can give a few of them some fun, before they die. You know some are still virgins?" Viv said, but again sadly. "I feel for them, like you do, but I can't ... " "Bring yourself to fuck a bunch of them at one time? No ... I guess that falls on whores like Dorrie and me, do to it. You're better than we are, Jenny. You need to stay ... " "How am I better than you two?" Jenny demanded. "We're the same ... " "Time to go," May shouted, interrupting their conversation. "You're better. Don't try to fight it, any more than we don't try to fight who we are." "You're better than that," Jenny claimed. "You deserve everything that the rest of us ..." "Jenny, we're meant to do this. Don't you see? It's fate, for Dorrie and me, just as it's your fate to be held to a higher standard. Embrace who you are, Jenny, just like we do," Viv said as they started walking back. Viv's words troubled Jenny for the rest of the shift. How was it that Jenny's fate was different than Viv's or Dorrie's. Why wasn't she acting like a slut, and fucking or blowing guys at random. Nothing about their reality made sense to her, yet in a different way Viv was right, and everything was taking its proper course. 'Is this the meaning of life?' she thought. 'Is Viv so insightful as to see it before and better than I can? If so, why isn't Viv the one held to a higher standard and me, the slut?' August was now a distant memory and September was upon them, as the nurses carried on their daily duties on Tulagi. The base was expanding constantly, and more Marines and sailors were added to Major Russ Felton's brigade all the time. They were expanding the docks to allow for bigger ships. Supplies and personnel were constantly moving in or out. The campaign was advancing from the earliest days. Henderson Field had been operational since the latter part of August. It was used to press the attack on the Japanese ground forces on Guadalcanal, and also to harass Japanese shipping and resupply attempts. The Japanese did manage to get supplies through, mostly at night, but the costs in planes, ships, and men were staggering. The repeated Japanese attempts to bomb Henderson Field produced an astonishing number of bomb craters around the airstrip, but never managed to stop its operation for long. Allied Forces, aided by British and local scouts, started to take the fight to the Japanese on Guadalcanal. They were able to break out of their defensive positions around the airstrip and push the Japanese back into the jungles and hills. Fierce fighting resulted, every day, as the Japanese knew the loss of Guadalcanal to the Allies would be a severe blow to their presence in the area. It would also give the Allies a strategic airfield from which to harass Japanese shipping and supply lines. The basic operation, code named Watchtower, had been a success. The Allies had surprised the Japanese, and quickly gained the upper hand on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The battle for Tulagi had lasted only days, but had produced the fiercest initial fighting. It had begun with an amphibious landing on the southwestern shore, and a bombardment of the approximate 500 elite Japanese Special Landing Forces stationed there. The Marines had spread out to form battle lines, and then advanced on the Japanese positions. Heavy fighting followed, but the superior numbers of the Marines managed to force the Japanese defenders onto the southeastern part of the small island. It took several days to end the fight and in the end 45 Marines had died. Only a handful of Japanese troops survived to be taken prisoner. The tiny island of Tulagi became a valuable part of the overall plan for the campaign to retake the Solomons. Only two miles long and several hundred yards wide, it had ideal protected waters where damaged ships could be repaired. It soon served as an important base of operations for short-ranged Patrol Torpedo boats. These boats would prove to be a great asset in the battles for Guadalcanal and later in the campaigns in the Central Solomon Islands. The Allies would make use of the other nearby islands too, such as Florida Island, but Tulagi would be crucial in the Allies' war effort. The nurses had seen many changes to the tiny island in their brief time on shore. In addition to the work on the docks and the use of the island for supplies, a recreational facility was planned. When Charlotte broke the news to the nurses, they were elated. Despite the parties, there had been little to do on the island. The increase in personnel soon brought more nurses too. The increased numbers meant that shifts could be reduced and days off were possible. The island had some nice beaches and the nurses were looking forward to the days they might be able to use them. Despite the increased number of nurses, the workload in the hospital was non-stop. The increase in combat assured that a nearly constant stream of wounded kept them all busy most of the time, and crazy-busy at others. Jenny was getting used to her operating room duties. It troubled her that the blood and carnage of so many of the Marines seemed less noticeable to her. As the weeks became months, she had seen it all: limbs blown off, stomach wounds that gaped open, eye wounds, and everything in between. It troubled her deeply that she could be so callous and unaffected by the misery and suffering of these soldiers but, to do her job properly, she had to be. They all got to know the other nurses despite working separate shifts. Charlotte kept the original group all together, knowing she would have a rebellion on her hands if she tried anything different, and put the new group on second shift. Night fighting was as fierce as that during the day, on Guadalcanal, but evacuation of the wounded was far more difficult and often waited until sunrise. Thus, second shift was usually slower than first shift. Because the daytime influx of wounded was the heaviest, she kept the more experienced team on days. The new recruits of nurses had gone through San Diego, just like them. With that in common, they struck up friendships with the other team. Bonnie, Jackie, and Darla were from the Midwest, like Jenny, May, and Bea. Rose and Thelma were from back east, near Charlotte, in North Carolina. This was their first assignment since being recruited, so Charlotte was constantly working their shift to train them. With Charlotte's heavy schedule, she needed someone to be in charge of first shift. Jenny was the logical choice given her assignment, and duties in the OR. Jenny was promoted to Petty Officer, Second Class, and put in charge of the day team when Charlotte wasn't there. Jenny was happy for the increased pay, some of which she sent back home, but didn't like having to tell her friends what to do. The slightly reduced workload resulting from the additional nursing staff gave them all a little more free time. They eagerly watched the construction crews putting up some new buildings for recreational activities. The Solomon Islands now boasted a strong sizable force of Allied Forces despite the fleet's being away on other operations. The original waves of Marines on Guadalcanal were finally being relieved from duty for some much needed rest. Many of the ones that made it to the base on Tulagi had all sorts of problems, ranging from disease and tropical infections to malnutrition. Those with psychological problems were the worst, for the nurses. They could treat the men for what ailed them, but not for what plagued them. Parties grew more frequent, and were not just limited to weekends. They sprung up as soon as a few people had some time off, something to drink and, hopefully, one or more of the nurses there to socialize with. Dorrie and Viv were increasingly popular, and their exploits were well known, though in hushed tones, on the base. Charlotte knew what was going on, as did her beau, Doctor Sanford, but they looked the other way, as did Major Felton. Felton had begun calling on Jenny, frequently. They would go for long walks on the beach, talking about many things but all the time growing closer. May was seeing one particular Marine stationed at the base, and Bea was frequenting many of the parties Viv and Dorrie went to. Bea usually managed to escape with just one guy, though, and left the gang bangs to Viv and Dorrie. Even so, she was friendly now with several men who all wanted her attentions. The new girls fit in, after they learned the ropes and Rose even attended a few of the parties with Viv and Dorrie. Rose was shorter, like Bea, with nice breasts, and Thelma was a tall thin girl with shoulder length hair. She had a smallish figure, but that didn't stop the guys from whistling at her or trying to get dates. Bonnie and Jackie were also tall, but with better figures, and were very cute. Darla was smaller and more plain, but had a funny nature about her that made her good company. Guadalcanal was the scene of fierce fighting each night. The Japanese fought hard to regain the island, and poured troops and equipment into the fray in a desperate attempt to push the Allies from the island and reclaim the all-important airstrip. The Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, realizing the importance of Guadalcanal to the region and the Allies, deployed available elements of the 17th Army, stationed out of Rabaul and fighting in New Guinea, to take on the task of overrunning the American positions on Guadalcanal and either retaking or destroying the airfield. The first of those Japanese troops to arrive was the 28th Infantry under the command of Colonel Ichiki. It was a regiment-sized force of 917 men, and they landed via destroyers near Taiva Point, east of the Ilu River. Severely underestimating the size of the American forces they confronted, Ichiki attacked the Allied defensive positions in the predawn hours of August 21st . His troops suffered heavy losses and, when the Marine units counteracted after daybreak they managed to kill all but 128 of the Japanese, including Colonel Ichiki. The remaining Japanese fled back to Taiva Point to await further reinforcements. This engagement eventually became known as the Battle of Tenaru. A further part of the offensive planned by the Japanese was to deliver 1,900 troops from Truk to Guadalcanal, using three slow-moving transport ships. The transports were being protected by a naval force consisting of thirteen ships under the command of Rear Admiral Raizo Tanaka. As further protection, the Japanese Navy sortied three carriers and thirty other ships to guard the landing force. In response, Admiral Fletcher combined three U.S. carrier groups and met the Japanese offensive in what would become known as the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. In one of the biggest naval battles since Midway, the carrier groups exchanged blows before retreating. The Japanese lost one carrier and Tanaka's convoy suffered heavy losses, including the sinking of one of the transports. The remaining convoy was forced to abort the landings on Guadalcanal and divert to the Shortland Islands for later redeployment, by destroyers, to Guadalcanal. This was hugely strategic to the war, as the Japanese would not be able to land much needed supplies and material now using destroyers only. Once again, in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the planes from Henderson Field proved invaluable in the defense of Guadalcanal and the Solomons. The U.S. aircraft and their crews, brought in all through August, were instrumental in harassing Japanese bombing attempts from Rabaul on the field, and on Japanese Naval shipping. In early September, the 1st Marine Air Wing came under the command of U.S. Marine Brigadier General Roy S. Geiger. In early September, Major Russ Felton was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, as the brigade forces on Tulagi expanded to support the campaign on Guadalcanal and in the Florida Islands. The pace of activities for the Colonel and Jenny gave them little time together, but they still tried to spend a little time each week. They spent long hours walking along the beach talking, mostly about the war. Colonel Felton had a good handle on the development of the war efforts on Guadalcanal and elsewhere in the Solomons and Jenny found it fascinating talking to him. "What was the name of that place, again?" Jenny asked as they walked along the beach. "Tenaru," the Colonel said. "They'll probably call it 'The Battle of Tenaru', once the brass-hats in the Pentagon have had time to analyze everything that happened during the fighting." "Do you think Admiral Fletcher redeemed himself, with his strategy in the Eastern Solomons, for pulling back from Guadalcanal too quickly after the landing?" Jenny asked. "Time will tell, Jenny, but the Japanese are still determined to recapture Guadalcanal and push us out of the Solomons," Russ stated. "Do you think we're in danger, here on Tulagi?" Jenny questioned nervously. "Jenny, we're in a forward position in the war, and the Japanese Navy still owns the Sealark Channel at night," Russ claimed. "You must hear the naval bombardments of Henderson field, practically every night." "Yes, and thankfully they have not turned their guns on us, that much," Jenny stated. "True. We've been spared the worst of the fighting, so far," Russ agreed. "Do you think you will remain here on Tulagi?" Jenny asked. "I don't know, Jenny. I hope so. There are plenty of officers who are anxious to taste battle. Personally, I see enough of this crazy war with the wounded here on Tulagi, to want to remain here. I am comfortable with my command, for now. Do you think I should push to get a battle command?" "No! Definitely not! You're doing a great job here! You're needed here!" Jenny said emphatically. "Good," the Colonel stated, laughing. "I'd hate to think you felt I was a coward, for remaining in command here." "Never!" Jenny proclaimed. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 02 "Why, PO2 Wells! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were concerned about me," Russ kidded her. "No maybe about it," Jenny declared with a smile. Russ took her hand as they walked, and they stopped to sit on a flat rock some distance down the beach. It was getting late in the afternoon, and the sun was sinking low on the horizon. The Colonel had been carrying, in his other hand, a small basket Jenny had bought from one of the local natives. In it, she had cheese, bread, and some salami one of the cooks at the mess had been good enough to part with. It didn't hurt that the cook knew, as did most people on the island, of Jenny's involvement with the good Colonel. For his contribution to the little feast, Russ had somehow secured a bottle of red wine, which he now opened. They ate the cheese and bread with the salami, and drank wine from two glasses Jenny had borrowed from the mess hall. The sun was like a golden ball just above the horizon, as they finished eating and sipped the remainder of the wine. Unaccustomed to drink, Jenny started to feel its effects. "Oh, geez, I'm feeling a little light headed from the wine," Jenny told Russ. "Good," Russ said jokingly. "Are you trying to get me drunk, soldier?" Jenny kidded. "Would it work?" Russ replied chuckling. "You never know," Jenny allowed, and moved closer to him on the rock. They had kissed before, but had not exceeded that limit yet. Colonel Russ Felton was eight years older than Jenny, but she didn't care. May thought she was crazy for letting an older man pursue her, but the other women thought he was dreamy handsome and told her to 'go for it, girl.' The age difference didn't bother Jenny, and she liked Russ's strong, experienced demeanor. He had remained a gentleman, though, and hadn't tried to push her to do anything beyond her comfort level. The soft kiss was followed by several that were more urgent. Jenny had not had sex with anyone since Midway. Her body was telling her to let go, but her brain wasn't sure. She knew Russ wanted her and found her attractive. He had told her how beautiful she was, on several occasions and, a couple times, after kissing, she could tell he was hard. She wasn't even sure what was holding her back, except propriety. She knew Russ was a gentleman, and didn't want to mess things up with him by being unladylike. Perhaps it was the wine, or the setting, or maybe it was just her body, finally winning out, but Jenny pushed her tongue into his mouth as they kissed. Russ answered, and they grew more ardent in their passion. Jenny took his hand and slowly moved it up to gently cup her left breast. Russ got the hint and squeezed her breast softly, through the material of her blouse and bra. Jenny moaned into his kiss and her tongue fought harder with his for the upper hand. She reached down and pulled her blouse from the waistband of her skirt, allowing him access now from underneath. His hand quickly found her supple left tit and massaged it some more through her bra. Jenny reached behind her back, under the blouse, and undid the clasp of her bra. Instantly, Russ' hand was under the cup of the bra and over her firm breast. He cupped the apple sized mound and felt the turgid nipple pushing hard against the palm of his hand. His fingers wasted little time focusing on the tender distended bud, and they moaned together into their kiss. "Oh, Russ," Jenny said when they finally gasped for air. "God, you're so sexy," Russ exclaimed. "Oh, you make me so hot," Jenny groaned. "You're so beautiful," Russ declared as he gazed into her eyes. Jenny's tiny hand traced a line from his knee up to his upper thigh. She had picked the right leg and could feel his excited sex bulging the fabric of his trousers. Her hand closed around it and squeezed gently. Both his hands caressed her breasts, now, and they resumed kissing their breath hot in each other's mouths. Their kisses grew even more urgent, as Jenny's hand moved to his belt and pulled on the brass buckle. It popped open and she pulled the one end loose. Russ picked her up in his strong arms and they slid to the ground on the other side of the rock. It was not high enough to block anyone from seeing them if they walked this far up the beach, but it was high enough to provide some privacy from more distant observers. Jenny's hands worked on the buttons of his shirt, and Russ did the same to her blouse. Moments later, his eyes feasted on Jenny's soft white breast in the twilight, and her cute pink nipples were now accessible to his kisses. He put his mouth to one as she pulled hard on his pants and underwear. "Oh, geez," Jenny growled when Russ sucked on her sensitive left nipple. Her hands found his cock as it popped free from his pants. She ran her hand up the underside of the shaft, feeling something wetting her palm as she brushed over the head. Her small fingers curled around the shaft and Russ moaned into her tit, adding a new sensation to the wonderful ones she was already experiencing. Jenny's hand slid lower and palmed his huge testicles. She couldn't hold them both at once. His cock didn't feel as long as Jerry's, maybe more like Will's, but it was thick and his balls huge. Russ' right hand tried to pull up her skirt but she stopped him. He groaned in moderate frustration, but returned to her breasts as he switched nipples with his mouth to give them both equal attention. Jenny's hand returned to his shaft and started stroking him. She felt more pre-cum ooze from the head, coating her fingers and making her task of rubbing his cock easier. Jenny would have liked nothing better than to impale herself on Russ' thick hard cock, then and there, but she wanted him to believe she wasn't that easy. Her mind was even tormenting itself between just stroking him and not pleasing him more by taking him in her mouth. Good girls in the forties weren't supposed to be even doing what she was little, let alone fucking or sucking cock. Her growing feelings for Russ were in strict contrast to her desire to avoid jumping right back into relationships like those she had with Jerry and Brad on Midway. With Russ, though, there was more. She could feel herself falling for this guy and wanting to please him. Her mind tried to restrain her actions but, her heart and body were fighting hard for more. Jenny pulled up Russ' undershirt when she felt his cock grow even stiffer and his testicles draw tightly against the base of his shaft. He was moaning into her breasts, now, and she pulled his head up and kissed him with increased passion. Her tongue probed deep into his mouth, seeking his and finding it. It was all Russ could take and his cock started spewing cum. The first shot went higher than Jenny planned and landed on his shoulder. Her thumb blocked most of the second, equally forceful, blast, and it coated her fingers and dropped to his belly. The next several covered his chest in white spunk. Jenny couldn't see well, in the darkness behind the rock, but she believed he came a ton. She kissed him until his dick began to soften in her hand. Russ laid there with his eyes tightly closed, his chest heaving as he sought to slow his breathing, and his abdomen still slightly moving in the aftermath of his release. Jenny finally broke the kiss and used the moment to clean the remnants of his seed from her fingers, then sat back on her heels to button her shirt. She could see glimpses of the whiteness on his belly. She smiled at him as his breathing slowed and he opened his eyes and smiled back. "Nothing for you?" Russ asked. "I'll be fine," Jenny avowed, but knew she would have to do something on her own. "That was nice," Russ said, kissing her again. "I liked it too," Jenny allowed with a cute mischievous smile. "Here, I thought you were an innocent girl," Russ said. "What makes you think I'm not?" Jenny asked but with a smirk. "The way you handled me. I think you've done that before," Russ claimed. "Maybe once or twice," Jenny said and giggled. "So you're not the innocent little farm girl from Lincoln, Nebraska you claim to be," Russ stated with merriment. "I never said I was completely innocent," Jenny claimed. "Oh, must have been my imagination," Russ chuckled. "Must be, Colonel, sir," Jenny said and saluted him. "Maybe I should order you to show me what else you know," Russ mused. "That wouldn't be fair, even in love and war, Colonel," Jenny chided, but grinning. "I suppose not, PO2, but I'd sure like it," Russ proclaimed. "I think I might too, sir." They laughed, and Jenny helped Russ clean up with her handkerchief. They packed up the food and glasses and started walking back, hand in hand. Darkness had settled over the island but, in the distance, flashes of explosions could be seen and their thunder dimly heard as the battle raged over Guadalcanal. They drew closer to camp and passed a two-man patrol walking the beach towards them. The Colonel returned their salutes, and they walked past. "It's a good thing you know the schedules of the patrols," Jenny giggled quietly. "I guess that's true," Russ agreed and chuckled softly along with her. They got back to camp and walked past the mess hall, which was one of the few buildings with an outside light on, at night. As they were nearing Jenny's barracks, Bea came out of the shadows, laughing, hand in hand with some Marine. She was somewhat startled to see the Colonel and Jenny, and both Bea and the Marine saluted them both. The light caught their faces and Jenny could see that Bea's lipstick was smeared. She knew that Russ probably saw it, too. After Bea and the Marine had moved off, Russ and Jenny said goodnight. They were discreet, now that they were back on base, and he gave her a chaste kiss on the cheek. He held both her hands, as they talked and gazed into each other's eyes. "Thanks for a great evening," the Colonel said with a smile. "It was very nice," Jenny agreed. "Can I see you again, soon?" Russ asked. "I don't have much time, between now and Friday. Can you get away, Friday night?" "I'll find a way," Russ stated. "I don't know if I can stand it, 'til then." "Me either, Russ," Jenny replied. He looked around and, not seeing anyone, leaned in and kissed her full on the lips. Jenny kissed him back but, broke into a grin. "Why, Colonel, Ah do declare! Y'all are takin' liberties, with me!" Jenny scolded in her best Southern Belle imitation. "I am consumed by your beauty, Miss Wells," Russ said jokingly. "Well, okay, then," Jenny relented, laughing. They said goodnight and Jenny went inside. May was in their room, and asked about her date with the Colonel. Jenny filled her in on the nice picnic on the beach, stopped short of describing everything that had occurred. Bea entered as they were getting ready for bed. "Geez, Bea," Jenny declared. "You got to be more careful." "What do you mean?" Bea asked. "When we met you, your lipstick was all smeared," Jenny pointed out. "Oh, my. You think the Colonel noticed?" Bea asked. "I wouldn't be surprised," Jenny stated. "Oh, gosh," Bea responded. "Oh, Bea, how could you?" May proclaimed. "Alright, May. I get it. I'll be more careful next time," Bea avowed. When Bea, May, and Jenny were in bed and had just turned the lights out they heard Viv and Dorrie stumbling into the dorm. From the sounds of things, they were drunk, which probably meant they'd had another night of wild sex. Jenny rolled over, facing the wall. She felt her own sexual frustration, but tried to put it out of her mind so she could sleep. Japanese troops shown boarding a destroyer for the "Tokyo Express" run to Guadalcanal. As the nurses slept on Tulagi, the Japanese continued their build up of troops on Guadalcanal, using nighttime operations the Allies referred to as the "Tokyo Express". This involved using destroyers and other fast ships that were capable of making the run to Guadalcanal and back before daybreak. It was also referred to as running "The Slot", a narrow body of water between the various islands of the Solomons including Sealark Sound. The Japanese landed over 5,000 troops on Guadalcanal, near Taiva Point, between August 29th and September 4th. They also landed about a thousand troops west of the Marines' Lunga perimeter. The Japanese next major offensive was planned and led by Major General Kawaguchi, in command of the 35th Infantry Brigade, which had finally arrived and was prepared to fight. Along with remaining elements of Ichiki's Second Echelon, now renamed the Kuma Battalion, and part of Kawaguchi's 35th Brigade that had landed west of the Marine's perimeter under the command of Colonel Oka, all prepared for attack on Henderson Field. Kawaguchi issued his three pronged attack plan on September 7th to attack and annihilate the troops around Henderson Field. Kawaguchi's forces all began moving into position on the 7th. He left 250 men behind in charge of protecting their supply base at Taiva, near the village of Tasimboko. Native scouts, under the command of Martin Clemens of the Solomon Islands Protectorate Defense Force, told the commanding officers of the Marines about Japanese troops being around Taiva Point. Lieutenant Colonel Edson planned an attack on them via boat. On September 8th they landed on Taiva Point and quickly drove the defenders into the jungle. What they found was a treasure trove of rations, ammunition, medical supplies, and a very high powered radio. They destroyed everything they didn't want, but returned with valuable documents and equipment. The captured documents, along with the volume of supplies, gave the Marines evidence that an attack was planned and of the size of the force facing them. They prepared for the attack and strengthened positions they thought were vulnerable, especially around the airstrip. Colonel Edson positioned his Raiders along a natural ridge just west of the airfield. The Japanese attack took place the night of September 12th with 3,000 of Kawaguchi's men attacking the ridge defended by Edson's men. The battle raged for two nights with the Japanese gaining some ground, but at a high cost. In addition, most of the advances they made were quickly repulsed by other Allied defenders. On the night of September 14th, Kawaguchi withdrew his remaining troops and led them on a five day march to the Matanikau Valley to meet up with Oka. The remaining two prongs of the Japanese attack had been repulsed, with equally heavy losses. All told, Kawaguchi's forces lost well over 800 men while the Marines lost just over a hundred. Upon learning of the defeat Kawaguchi's men suffered, the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters determined that Guadalcanal was now a critical front in the war. They could not afford to lose Guadalcanal to the Allies. General Hyakutake, the overall operational leader for the area, decided to concentrate on Guadalcanal. To do that he had to withdraw from their positions on New Guinea, only thirty miles from their objective, Port Moresby, and reassign those troops and materiel to the campaign on Guadalcanal. The nurses on Tulagi put in a series of hard, terrible shifts, that week. The wounded from Guadalcanal were coming in to them in a vicious, steady stream. They learned, through various channels, that the Japanese had launched a new offensive on Guadalcanal. The work was constant, giving them little to no time for rest, and free time was not available at all. They were so exhausted by the end of their twelve hour shifts that even Viv and Dorrie forgot about attempting any afterhours hi-jinx. Jenny thought she was going to lose it, if things didn't ease up soon. Every night as they got ready for bed, she scrubbed her hands until they were nearly raw. Her hands were constantly covered with blood for most of her twelve hour shift in the OR. When she got out at the end of the day it took massive scrubbing to get all traces of blood from her hands and under her nails, and she began to wonder if this was how Lady Macbeth had felt. The other girls watched her with growing concern. Finally on the 15th thing eased up a bit. Again they heard, through the grapevine, that the Marines had successfully defended their positions on Guadalcanal. The nurses still had to work feverishly for two more days, to finish tending to patients before they were shipped out to Pearl, and to restock the OR and other stores for the next potential offensive. It wasn't until that weekend that they really got time to relax. Many of the Marines had a party planned for Saturday night. Of course all the nurses were invited. They would have liked to do a beach party, but bonfires on the beach were strictly prohibited because of all the Japanese naval activity in "The Slot." Therefore, they had to hold the party either in the mess or back behind the camp in the jungle. The mess hall had limitations for size, and the atmosphere was not great either, so they preferred the jungle, despite the mosquitoes. The bonfire worked to keep them at bay, as long as you stayed close by. Charlotte let the nurses work only eight hour shifts that day which meant even the second shift could make the party once they were off duty. The Marines prepared everything, and were fortunate that there was a nice clearing not far into the woods where they could hold the party. They used a bulldozer to clear a path to it, which made it easier for the nurses to get there. Someone had made some punch and spiked it with some spirits they managed to lay their hands on. The phonograph one of the Marines had worked off a wire they had strung to the clearing, but the damp humid night didn't help with the sound or the playing. Nonetheless, they had music, which meant dancing. By ten o'clock at night the party was in full swing. The fire and smoke helped keep the mosquitoes down to manageable numbers and the dirty, somewhat muddy dance floor meant the women had to wear flats and not heels, but all in all they had a great time. Everyone needed to unwind, and the punch helped in that regard. The first shift nurses' dance cards were constantly full, and they were elated when the second shift showed up to take some of the pressure off them for every dance. The night was hot and sticky and everyone soon had a good perspiration going, especially those who were dancing. Jenny's dance card was constantly full, until the Colonel showed up at just after ten. She danced, after that, but the varying partners became just one. May was constantly dancing with Phil, the Marine she had developed a fondness for over the last few weeks. Bea had a group of five male admirers after her, and Dorrie and Viv had so many that no one could count them all. Charlotte had been there, early, with the good Doctor Sanford, but they had kindly left to cover the remaining patients when the second shift arrived. All the new girls, who hadn't had much time for socializing since arriving on Tulagi, were immediately besieged by a horde of Marines and sailors. Jenny and May were taking a breather from dancing, and Phil had gone with the Colonel to see about more punch for everyone. As May and Jenny sat talking, they watched the new recruits dancing away. "Look at that, "Jenny said, pointing over to Thelma. "She must have five guys, easy, waiting to dance with her." "Yeah, poor, Thelma. Those guys are going to wear her out," May expressed. "Look at Bonnie and Jackie," Jenny added. "They look like good dancers." "They're both so cute I imagine they had plenty of chances to practice, in high school," May elaborated. The phonograph was currently playing a lively dance number. Jenny recognized it as a Benny Goodman tune, although she couldn't put a name to it. Of course, since the only Goodman tunes she recognized by name were "Stardust" and "Sing, Sing, Sing", that wasn't saying a whole lot. She watched the two tall brunettes swing and sway, with their partners, out on the dance floor. Both Bonnie and Jackie looked to be about five-eight with trim curvy bodies, not unlike May, but more so. Jenny was a little jealous of their height. Darla was shorter and blonde, closer to Bea's height, but not as cute as Bea. She was a talker though and everyone liked her. Her bubbly personality made up for a nose that was a little too big for her face. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 02 The last nurse from second shift was Rose. She had developed a friendship with Thelma, as they both were North Carolinians with heavy southern accents. Rose was about Jenny's height, not as tall as May, but taller than Bea. She had bigger breasts than Jenny did, close in size to Bea's huge mounds, but couldn't compete with Jenny in the looks department. Jenny was still the overall favorite of the Marines and sailors, but her attachment to the Colonel meant she was off limits to everyone else. In addition to the usual focus on Bea, Viv, and Dorrie, the new attentions of the enlisted men were lavished mostly on Jackie, Bonnie, and Thelma. None of the nurses were left without a dance-partner for much longer than it took to have a sip of punch or smoke a cigarette, but the size of the waiting lines for dances with Bonnie, Thelma, and Jackie told which girls were being given the highest priorities, by the men. "It's good to see everyone relaxing," May said. "Especially you, Jenny. We've been worried about you, working in that OR. It's got to be tough, in there." "I'll tell you, May, I thought I was going to go crazy, this week. I don't know how much longer I can keep up with the pressure, when we are inundated with wounded." "This week was terrible, even for us in post-op," May agreed. "I don't know how Charlotte does it, without it getting to her." "I think it does get to her, but she's learned how to cope. You should talk with her, Jenny. Maybe she has some advice on how to handle it," May allowed. Jenny noticed Russ and Phil, who were walking toward them with four glasses of punch. "I think I'll get drunk and ravage the good Colonel, tonight," Jenny stated, jokingly, before they arrived. "After this week, I may just let Phil get to another base," May said with a giggle. They both were still laughing when the two men arrived back at the table. "What's so fun?" Russ asked, looking at Jenny. "Oh, we're just happy you both found us more to drink," Jenny claimed, but still giggling. "Using the punch to take the edge off?" Phil observed. "You could say that," May replied. "I think it's good for all of us," Phil added. "Thanks, Colonel, for allowing us to have these parties." "Well, Corporal Green, they are a great way to keep moral up. Everyone needs some time to themselves and time to relax. Other commanding officers might not feel that way, but I do," the Colonel stated. The two couples drank their punch and talked. Afterwards, they danced a few more dances. Jenny noticed Viv giving her a sign, at one point, as she danced with the Colonel. Jenny knew what Viv wanted and, when the song ended she suggested to the Colonel they leave and go for a walk. As they were walking back to the base Russ asked, "Why'd you want to leave?" "I just wanted to be alone with the most handsome man there," Jenny commented with a smile. "Well, I was enjoying dancing with the prettiest girl there," Russ responded. "Flattery will get you everywhere, Colonel," Jenny claimed with a giggle. "I'm hoping so," Russ replied. They walked, hand in hand, down towards the beach. The base commander stopped at the guard shack to check the duty rooster and sign off on his inspection. He made it a practice to do random checks on the sentries, to keep them on their toes. His staff was supposed to do likewise, and sign off on the detail rosters. This time though, he had an ulterior motive. "Everything in order?" Jenny asked. "Yes, fine. I do that from time to time, but actually I was checking the watch patterns. We should be safe for a half hour after the next patrol passes," Russ concluded. "Oh, smart thinking," Jenny said and laughed at his deviousness. He laughed too. They walked along the beach for a while, back to the rock they had sat on nearly a week earlier. When they got there, they sat down and gazed out over the water of Sealark Sound, commonly referred to now as Iron Bottom Sound because of all the ships from both navies that had been sunk, there. They talked a little, but mostly just sat there with Russ' arm around her shoulders. It was a beautiful night, with a light breeze off the water. It felt good, after the dampness and heat of the jungle. Their clothes were still damp from dancing. The Colonel saluted the patrol as they went by and they watched the two guards continue on down the beach. When they were out of sight in the darkness, Jenny got an idea and looked at Russ with a mischievous grin. "You said we would be alone now for a half hour?" "Yeah, the next patrol is due ..." his words catching in his throat. Jenny had jumped up and in one motion pulled her dress over her head. She stood before him in her bra and panties, kicking off her shoes. "Last one in is a rotten egg," Jenny said giggling. "Oh, yeah," Russ shot back, standing and working his shirt buttons. Russ nearly stopped dead in his tracks though when Jenny pushed down her panties and threw them on her dress on the rock. He was thankful for the nearly-full moon, as he watched her unfasten her bra and add it to the pile of clothing. His eyes were riveted to the luscious female body before him. Jenny's body nearly took his breath away and he slowed his disrobing to stare at her in rapt admiration. "Hurry up, silly," Jenny shouted with a laugh and headed off down to the water's edge. Russ watched her cute rear run away from him, and sped up his undressing. He tossed clothes anywhere, as soon as they were off, and set off after her. Jenny had paused briefly to test the water, but had turned to beckon him on as she proceeded in. He hit the surf at full stride and caught up with her before the water level rose to the middle of his thighs. The waves were small, with the low tide, making them both sway gently. He came up behind her and grabbed her around the waist. "Hey," she shrieked, but giggled as he spun her around. "You wild thing," Russ scolded her playfully. "What's the matter, Colonel? Never go skinny dipping with a girl, before?" Jenny asked him, amused. "No," Russ admitted. "Have you, with a guy?" "Truthfully, no," Jenny allowed but laughed. "I guess there's a first time for everything." "I'm glad of that," Russ agreed laughing and dragging her into deeper water. The water was delightful. It cooled their skin, and washed away the perspiration from their dancing. Russ released her and Jenny turned to face him. Her arms went around his neck which brought her body close to his. Her nipples were distended from the coolness of the water, or was it the excitement, or both? She leaned in to kiss him, and her breasts pressed deliciously against his chest. She could feel him below the water, touching her belly. "Ah declare, Colonel, does skinny dippin' with a girl get y'all excited?" Jenny chided with her southern belle accent again. "With one as beautiful as you it does, Miss Wells," Russ shot back with a smile. "It feels like you're saluting me in a different way, Colonel," Jenny said, laughing. "I could say the same of you, PO2," Russ replied, nodding down towards her breasts. Jenny looked down, "Oh, I guess you're right at that, Colonel," Jenny mused. They kissed again and Jenny could feel the increasing hardness in the prodding appendage below the water's surface. Her hand snuck between them and encircled it. Russ moaned into their kiss as her hand moved on his shaft playfully. "Oh, god, Jenny. You drive me mad," Russ groaned, her hand still caressing him. He leaned down and kissed her neck, then along her slim shoulder, and down her left arm. When he reached near her breast, he moved over across the soft tissue of her mound to the crinkled nipple. Jenny moaned when he took the little bud into his mouth. The wet warmness felt delightful and his little licks sent flashes of pleasure to her pussy. "Oh, geez," Jenny groaned. "You're so beautiful," Russ exclaimed. "I love every part of you." Jenny pushed down on his cock and straddled it with her legs. His cock nestled between her labia as she let go and put both arms around his neck as they kissed. Russ' cock put delicious upward pressure on her clit as they moved together slightly in the waves. They stayed like that for a time that was agonizingly long for each of them. Russ was unsure of the next move she might allow, and Jenny was wrestling with her emotions, as well. Their kisses told of their passion, however. They were deep, long kisses, and their tongues tangled in a wonderful dance. Both their passions soared as they barely moved. Finally, Jenny pushed away from his chest slightly. She looked deeply into his eyes as she reached between them. He felt her hand grasp him again but this time she guided him to her entrance. They looked deeply at each other as the spongy head of his cock battered around her opening before parting her lips. They both gasped with the exquisite contact as his cockhead forced open her pussy and slipped inside. She was tight, incredibly tight given the month or so since she had last had sex. Russ' cock felt huge inside her. He was barely in and already she could feel the wonderful fullness. Jenny wrapped her legs around Russ, which helped force more of his beautiful cock deep inside her sex. They hugged each other when his cock was fully nestled in her cunt. "Oh, god, you feel so good inside me," Jenny proclaimed in a low, throaty moan. "You feel incredible, too," Russ growled. "Do it, Russ! Make love to me, please!" Jenny groaned. Russ started slowly moving inside her. He held her firm ass with his strong hands, and worked his cock back and forth. Jenny encouraged him with her legs as they helped pull her into him. Russ went as slowly as his over-excited body would allow. He wanted this first coupling of theirs to be the best it could be. He had been with several women in high school and met more in Maryland while going to the naval academy, but Jenny was special to him and he wanted this first mating to be perfect for both of them. Jenny wasn't as reserved. She had abstained from sex for too long for her body's liking. Her sexual frustrations were pouring out as she rode Russ' cock like she couldn't get enough. It didn't take long for her to feel those incredible twangs of bliss simmering below the surface of her body. "Oh, my god! Do it, Russ! Do it harder!" Jenny pleaded desperately. Russ did as she wanted, but fought hard against his own rising passions. His orgasm was stirring deliciously in his balls, but he wanted desperately to make her climax first. He fortunately didn't have long to wait. The added stimulation to her clit, from his harder thrusts, threw Jenny over the precipice of her orgasm. She clung to him as her body shuddered through waves of pleasure. "Oh, Russ!" Jenny groaned loudly. Russ waited until his mind was about to blow, along with the pressure in his balls, before pulling out of her. He barely made it out before his cock erupted, depositing ropes of sperm into the sea. Some of it hit Jenny in the stomach before washing away in the tide. They moaned together as they rode the crest of their orgasms. As their climaxes waned, Jenny's legs dropped exhausted from his hips and she stood again in the water before him. They kissed despite still fighting for breath. Eventually, they parted and Jenny looked into his eyes and said, "That was wonderful." "You're incredible," Russ said. "You're not so bad yourself," Jenny weakly said, smiling and panting. Russ held her and they kissed again. His cock was now softer between them. "We better get dressed before the guards come," Jenny suggested. "Do we have to? I could hold you like this forever," Russ replied. "I wouldn't mind that, either, but the guards might have a great story to tell if they found their commander in the surf with a nurse," Jenny stated reluctantly. "They might, at that, but who cares?" Russ responded. "You might, in the morning," Jenny expressed with a smile. "I doubt it, but you're probably right," Russ sighed in agreement. He picked her up and carried her from the water, back to their clothes. They didn't have towels, so they sat on the rock and waited for the breeze to dry them somewhat. Russ couldn't keep his hands off her body between tickling her and caressing her breasts. Jenny fought off his attacks, but only playfully, and occasional got in a feel of his recovering cock as well. Before they were dry, he was hard again. Their passionate kisses had her excited as well. "We'd better dress," Jenny said, playfully pushing him away. "Hey, I'm supposed to be the boss around here," Russ complained. "Not this time, buster," Jenny said jokingly. Russ grabbed her teasingly but then let her go and they dressed. His eyes never left her body and he seemed disappointed every time a new article of clothing hid parts of her. "You're so gorgeous. I'm the luckiest guy in the whole bloody world," Russ commented. She leaned into his arms and said, "I like you, too, my handsome prince." Russ hugged her and they kissed. The tender-at-first kiss turned into a deeply passionate one as they stood locked in their embrace. When they finally stopped, Russ looked at her longingly. "Jenny, I'm falling in love with you," he said. "Russ, I ... " "You don't have to say anything. I don't expect you to, but I just wanted to tell you my feelings. I know, from what you've told me that you've had some relationships back on Midway that still weigh on you. I can appreciate that you might not be over those, but I just wanted you to know that I feel like I'm falling in love with you." "Oh, Russ ... I don't know ..." "Shhh ... You don't have to say anything. I don't want you to say anything, now. I just wanted to tell you this because I have other news too." "What?" "Jenny, the Admiralty thinks another Japanese offensive is being planned for Guadalcanal. The Japs are pulling back in New Guinea and that can only mean one thing - they are planning to strengthen their attacks on us here. I haven't exactly received orders yet but I believe my brigade is going to be called up for action. I have some friends in General Vandergrift's headquarters and the word is out he is looking for reinforcements in anticipation of the offensive. "Oh, Russ, no! Please don't say that! You're needed here on Tulagi!" Jenny exclaimed. "I hoped I could stay here too, so I could be close to you, but that was only wishful thinking I guess. I knew in my heart of hearts that eventually they would get around to me. "No, please don't go, Russ! Tell them you can't. Tell them there is too much work to be done here," Jenny pleaded. "I can't, Jenny. Besides, what kind of man would you think me to be if I hid from my duty," Russ countered. "I don't care about that! I want you safe, with me. Please don't go," Jenny exclaimed. "Jenny, I'd never leave you if there was a choice. I have to do this." Tears started rolling down Jenny's face. She stared at him in disbelief. She pushed him away and stared at the ground, crying. "Jenny, please. I need you to be with me, on this. I need you to be here for me," Russ pleaded. She turned to him with tears streaking down her face. She went to him and hugged him. "Two seconds ago, I was the happiest girl on the island. Now, I'm the saddest," Jenny said. "It'll be alright. Nothing's going to happen to me," Russ claimed. "I wish I could believe that," Jenny professed. They walked slowly back to camp. They were walking so slowly the guard detail passed them and saluted. Russ hugged Jenny to him as they walked in silence. Even with the long, slow walk, she had barely stopped sniffling before they reached camp. Russ walked her back to her barracks. They kissed ardently outside for several minutes. To Jenny, it felt like their last possible kiss. She held herself together until she got through the door and out of sight. As so as she started down the hall toward their room, she started bawling like crazy. May heard her coming and met her at the door. Jenny managed to get out the gist of the problem through her tears. May stood in shocked disbelief. This meant Phil would probably be going too. They had left the party soon after Russ and Jenny. They found a parked truck, crawled inside the back, and kissed for a long time. Before they left the truck she had given him a blowjob, their first real sex together. May felt tears of her own coming on. 'Damn this war,' she thought. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 03 Book Two, Chapter Three This is a fictional account. *** May woke first and returned from showering to find Jenny sitting up in bed. She had a worried look as May finished getting dressed. "Something else wrong, Jenny?" May asked. "No, but, May, please don't tell anyone what I told you last night. I'm not sure Russ expected me to tell anyone. After all, they don't have the official orders yet." "I won't, Jenny." "Won't what?" Bea groaned sleepily from her bed. "Oh, darn, you're supposed to still be asleep," Jenny said. "I have to pee," Bea claimed. "What won't May do?" "Okay, I'll tell you but you must swear to keep it to yourself," Jenny stated. "I will," Bea said, sitting up in bed. Jenny explained what Russ had told her the night before. That nothing was official yet but that they might be called up for duty on Guadalcanal. "Who might be called up?" Bea asked. "Third Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment," Jenny said. "General Vandergrift is calling them up in anticipation of another Japanese offensive." "Oh, shit, really? That means a bunch of my friends will be going too," Bea claimed, now getting out of bed. Jenny and Bea walked to the showers together. Bonnie and Jackie were already in the first two showers, so Bea and Jenny took the back two. Jenny hated these back showers with the peephole in the wall and she always glanced up to see if anyone was watching. Fortunately, no one was this day. As the four women walked back towards the barracks together later, Bea and Jenny got more of a chance to talk. Jackie and Bonnie were a few steps ahead, talking together. "Those two were sure getting their dance cards punched last night," Bea stated. "Yeah, they were, the guys can't get enough of them. But you were doing just fine from what I saw," Jenny responded. Bea laughed, "Yeah, I did alright." "What does that mean?" Jenny asked, believing Bea was talking more than dancing. "Jenny, I'm afraid I'm becoming more like Viv and Dorrie every day. This war is getting to me like it has them," Bea said, extracting a cigarette from her pack in her robe pocket. "Why do you say that?" Jenny asked. "Oh, well, I shouldn't tell you this, because I don't what you thinking ill of me, but I was naughty last night," Bea claimed with a slight giggle as she lit up. "What do you mean?" "The five guys I was mostly dancing with last night." "Yeah?" "Well, two of them got pretty drunk and passed out at the party but the other three and I found a spot in one of the supply tents," Bea allowed. "What?" "Yeah, I had sex with all three of them," Bea admitted. "Bea, you didn't!" Jenny gasped. "Actually, I did ... and you know what? It was fun. I'm not sorry I did," Bea stated, taking a drag on her cigarette. She was smoking as much as Viv and Dorrie these days too. "Oh, god, Bea!" "Yeah, I know, pretty slutty of me, huh?" "Did they just take turns on you?" Jenny asked, acting more intrigued than she intended. "Geez, Jenny, don't make me tell you all the sordid details, but it was pretty much all three at one time switching off," Bea related. "What?" "You know ... or maybe you don't ... me bent over, one in the front and one behind, while the other plays with your hanging tits or his dick's in your hand." "Oh, god, Bea!" Jenny said, as if shocked, but she could feel more than that as a reaction. "The worst part is concentrating on everything at once," Bea bemused. "My word, Bea!" Jenny exclaimed too loud. "What?" Jackie said, turning as they approached the barrack. Bonnie did too to see why Jenny was saying that so loud. "Nothing," Bea said. "Jenny, is it normal for those guys to be packing like that?" Bonnie asked pointing to some Marines loading supplies and carrying full packs. "Oh, geez," Jenny exclaimed, but to no one in particular. "What?" Bonnie asked. Jenny took off in a run for the headquarters building. She forgot all about being in her robe with just underwear on underneath. Jackie and Bonnie looked on in shock. "Jenny, wait!" Bea shouted but to no avail. "Where's she going in her robe?" Jackie asked. "She's going to see the good Lieutenant Colonel," Bea foretold. "Why?" Bonnie asked. "I believe what you're seeing ladies is the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine regiment getting ready to deploy to Guadalcanal," Bea related. "That includes the handsome Colonel." "Oh, my!" Bonnie exclaimed. "You mean most of those men we danced with last night are going off to fight the war?" "That's exactly what I mean," Bea said. "Excuse me please. I have to get dressed quickly and see some Marines of my own before they leave." Bea felt the first raindrops as she ran inside. May was waiting for them to go to breakfast but Bea quickly related what they had seen and where Jenny was. May rushed out to find Phil, even as the drizzle turned to a steady rain. She was soaked and getting her feet muddy before she was fifty yards from the barracks. Jenny reached the headquarters wet, dirty, and out of breath. She rushed into the Colonel's outer offices and asked his adjutant to see the Colonel right away. Everyone on the base knew of their relationship, so the adjutant didn't even bother to ask why. With a glance to her robe and a grin, he asked her to take a seat while he informed the Colonel and left. Jenny sat and it gave her time to catch her breath. She tried to make herself look more presentable but that was not really possible given her wet hair, muddy shoes, and lack of even a brush. The adjutant came out of Russ' office and greeted her warmly. "The Colonel will see you now," the adjutant said, as several of the officers Jenny knew from the base filed out of the Colonel's office and gave her passing grins and nods hello. Jenny returned the smiles and nods but rushed into the Colonel's office and closed the door. Russ had been sitting at the desk but he was standing now and came around one side to meet her. "Jenny, what the hell are you doing here dressed ... " "Russ, I saw the men packing! Is it true? Is it happening already?" "Yes, Jenny. We depart this evening at 2100 hours. "No, that isn't fair! Can't they give you more time?" "Actually, I couldn't tell you for sure last night, because of orders, but I've known for sure we were going since the 14th," Russ said. "You knew and didn't tell me?" Jenny shouted. "Jenny, please," Russ said, trying to calm her down, "I couldn't tell anyone under orders. It had to be that way." "But last night ... you let me ... you could have told me before ..." Jenny shouted. "Jenny, please keep your voice lower. I couldn't tell you for sure. I really wasn't even supposed to tell you what I did, but I knew it would be obvious to all in the morning as we prepared," Russ asserted. "Besides, I wouldn't have changed a thing, would you?" "I ahh ... I might have ... I mean I could have ... oh, I not sure of anything right now. All I know is I don't want you to go. Can't you get out of it somehow?" Jenny pleaded. "Jenny, I told you last night this was inevitable and you wouldn't respect me if I didn't answer the call of duty." "I would too! You don't need to prove anything to me," Jenny expounded. "Would you have done anything differently if I'd told you earlier?" Russ asked taking her hands in his. "Ahh ... I umm ... Yes ... No ... Yes," Jenny said, and then hugging him and kissing him as tears filled her eyes. "Which is it?" Russ asked with a chuckle, kissing her back. "Shut up and kiss me, Colonel," Jenny allowed, tears running down her beautiful face. They kissed for several minutes until Russ held her back, "Now why are you dressed like this?" "We were walking back from the showers when we saw the troops preparing," Jenny stated, a smile now brightening her cute face. "I must look a sight." "You look beautiful to me," Russ claimed jokingly. "You like this, do you?" Jenny said, laughing and untying the belt of her robe. It fell open, revealing her matching white cotton bra and panties underneath. She opened it further with her hands. Russ drank in her beauty and body with his eyes and smiled. "I might have planned a better send off if you'd given me more time," Jenny mused. "This is wonderful as you are," Russ claimed, with a laugh. "Will there be time later?" Jenny asked. "I doubt it. I have a lot to do before we leave tonight," Russ stated. "Does that door lock, Colonel?" Jenny asked with a mischievous grin. "No, but are you serious?" "Yes," Jenny proclaimed. "Wait a second," Russ said. He walked to the door, opened it a crack, and told his adjutant not to disturb him. When he shut it and turned to Jenny, she dropped the robe on a chair and beckoned him to her. Russ laughed as he walked back to where she stood by the desk. "This is quite against regulations, PO2," Russ said smiling. "Does this PO2 not please you, Colonel?" "Oh, yes, very much," Russ said. "Then shut up and come here," Jenny commanded, holding her arms out to him. They kissed for a while but Jenny knew he couldn't dally long. She backed up onto his desk and pulled him with her. Her hands unfastened his belt and buttons as they kissed. Russ' hands palmed her bra covered breasts and teased the nipples to stiffness through the material. When his pants dropped to his ankles, she pushed his underwear down too. His semi-hard cock bounced free of its confines and into her hand. They kissed until she had him hard with her hand. Jenny leaned back on the desk and pulled Russ between her legs. She pulled her panties to the side, exposing her sex to his gaze. Russ got his first look at her blonde pubes and the pink gash below. Her hand had not left his cock and she guided him into her. She was not totally ready but he managed to enter her slowly. They fucked and kissed with a passion neither had felt before. They went slowly at first, until her pussy moistened, and then she pulled him tighter. Russ brought her along, until her first orgasm arrived and peaked, and she hugged him to her, quivering through the bliss. They kissed feverishly for several minutes and then he started again with some urgency. Jenny wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him deeper as they fucked. Russ managed to get her off once more but it was all of her body his pleasured cock could take. At the last second he pulled back, his cock popped free of her cunt, and bounced above her belly. They both watched as he erotically and forcefully shot ropes of white thick sperm onto her tummy. When it was over, they hugged and kissed again. Russ looked around the room for something to wipe her off with but Jenny just smiled and grabbed her robe. She put it back on and tied it around her waist. She smiled at him the whole time and he laughed at her as he pulled his clothes back on. "You walking back like that?" he asked. "Yes! It will give you an image to think about while you're away from me. Me walking back to the barracks with your sperm on my tummy," Jenny exclaimed with a naughty giggle. "I didn't know you were such a bad girl," Russ said. "There's a lot you don't know about me yet, Marine. So come back to me so you can find out," Jenny pleaded with a smile, but a serious edge to her tone. They kissed for several more moments before he walked her to the door, "Promise me, you'll come back to me, Russ," Jenny begged. "I will, my love," Russ avowed. They kissed one more time before he opened the door and she left. She hadn't replied to him that she loved him too. It made her cry. 'I'm not ready,' she told herself, but the truth was she was scared. I'm too scared of losing him and being crushed. "I should have said it," Jenny told herself. As she walked back in the rain, she cried softly. It was somewhat hidden from all the passing and busy Marines and sailors by the dampness of the rain on her cheeks. Quite a few whistled at her but, she just walked, 'If they only knew what I had under this robe they'd really be whistling,' she thought and managed a slight smile. The Tokyo Express completed runs to Guadalcanal on September 14th, 20th, 21st, and 24th. They succeeded in bringing in much need supplies and a small force of about 280 men from the 1st Battalion to Kamimbo on Guadalcanal. General Kawaguchi had plans to add 17,500 more men and equipment to Guadalcanal in anticipation of another attack against Henderson Field on October 20, 1942. For this, the Japanese 2nd Infantry Division and the 38th Division were both moved from the Dutch West Indies to Rabaul for plans to be taken by Tokyo Express runs to Guadalcanal. With the break in the air battles over Henderson Field, because of bad weather between September 14th and the 27th, the Allies copied the Japanese in adding reinforcements to the Lunga perimeter. Vandergrift called up, between September 14th and the 18th, the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment from Tulagi, 4,157 men of the 3rd Provisional Brigade that were part of the 7th and 11th Marine Regiments, as well as a convoy loaded with vehicles, supplies, and equipment. These additional forces allowed Vandergrift to secure a solid line of defense around Henderson Field. During the resupply of Guadalcanal, and herself carrying troops to be delivered, the U.S. carrier Wasp was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. This left only one U.S. carrier, the Hornet, operational in the area at the time. Both sides took the time with the break in the air war to resupply planes. The Japanese added 85 fighter and bomber aircraft to Rabaul, while the U.S. brought in 23 fighters and attack aircraft to Henderson Field. The Japanese outnumbered the Allies in land-based planes 117 to 71. The air war started again on September 27th, with planes from Rabaul attacking, which were answered by those from Henderson Field. Starting September 24th, and until early October, Vandergrift had his men conduct a series of raids upon Japanese positions. Vandergrift knew that Kawaguchi's forces were amassed to the west of the Matanikau River, with other smaller elements scattered outside his defensive positions at Lunga. To keep the Japanese from establishing positions right up to his Lunga perimeter and back, west of the Matanikau River, Vandergrift attacked the Japanese forces with several raids. One was a disaster and required three companies of Marines to be evacuated by destroyer and the U. S. Coast Guard after heavy losses. A second, larger raiding party, caught the newly unloaded Japanese 2nd Infantry unprepared and inflicted heavy casualties. Both actions served Vandergrift's plan of keeping the Japanese back from his lines and hindered their efforts to regroup for the planned attack late in October. In October, both sides continued adding forces to Guadalcanal. The Japanese Navy had promised to support the Army in whatever they needed to win the battle for Guadalcanal. In addition to the air attacks planned from Rabaul, the Japanese Navy planned to attack Henderson Field by ship and destroy the planes and airstrip with special high explosive rounds. The night of the 11th, the Japanese planned another Tokyo Express run to deliver 728 men and equipment, while simultaneously planning in a completely separate action, a naval attack on Henderson Field. Ironically, the Americans had resupply plans of their own that night, which called for elements of the Army's 164th Infantry Regiment to be delivering 2,837 men, to aid the Marines on Guadalcanal. Task Force 64, consisting of four cruisers and five destroyers was sent into the Slot to interdict any attempts by the Japanese to destroy the transports. The U.S Naval force, commanded by Rear Admiral Norman Scott, surprised the Japanese force of ships, commanded by Rear Admiral Goto, which was headed for Henderson Field. The Americans fired first and destroyed one heavy cruiser, one destroyer, and heavily damaged another heavy cruiser. The Japanese force retreated but managed to sink one U.S cruiser, one destroyer, and damaged another cruiser. Goto died in the exchanges between the ships, and his force retreated without completing their mission against Henderson Field. In the morning, the CAF once again took to the air from Henderson Field, and sank two more Japanese destroyers. Both opposing forces managed to make their landings of troops unmolested. When the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment left Tulagi that night for Guadalcanal, an eerie silence fell over the camp. With bad weather affectively grounding everything, the nurse's extremely strenuous activities came to an abrupt halt. The lull in the war gave all the nurses more time to catch up on many of the neglected things. To keep from thinking about Russ, Jenny had time to respond to letters from Jerry and Brad. May also wrote to Ben, and more new mail arrived from the States just as they were finally mailing responses to old letters. Now, they had those to read and answer too. The only good news for Jenny was a letter from home that said her brother had yet to be deployed to either Europe or Africa. At least that was good news, and she didn't have to worry too much about him yet. Russ had smoked cigarettes, as most GIs did, and somehow Jenny had indulged occasionally. She had, in the past, given her weekly supply of cigarettes, which in those days the military furnished without question, to her friends. Now, like practically everyone else, she had a pack with her constantly. She only smoked a few a day, not like Viv, Dorrie, and Bea who went through a pack a day easy. May had tried it along with Jenny but had not liked it enough to continue. Of the new nurses, Rose, Thelma, and Darla all smoked but Bonnie and Jackie didn't yet. With the reduced activity, the nurses got fewer hours per shift, more breaks, and time to take better care of the wounded still to be transferred out. Kindnesses that were not possible, time not permitting before, could now be done. Nurses even spent hours of their free time tending to the wounded. Sometimes it was just someone for them to talk with. A pretty face, soft caring voice, and someone to light a cigarette for those too wounded to be able to do it themselves. With the temporary reduction in forces on Tulagi, even the parties dropped in frequency. Most of the Marines and sailors the nurses had partied with were gone. Viv and Dorrie still had enough left to stay busy, and Bea had two of her five best men still around, but May and Jenny had plenty of time to worry about Phil and Russ on Guadalcanal. Sure there were still parties, and all the nurses attended but, the size and numbers were down. The phonograph was still available for music and dancing but, the supply of alcoholic beverages was dramatically down. Also, the heat, rain, and mosquitoes made any outside activity a chore. Other than walks along the beach, which was still constantly patrolled, and where it was more pleasant, life was boring and miserable. Jenny had gotten to know one boy in particular on her off hour rounds in the infirmary. She spent a lot of time there and knew everyone by name. They knew her too and always looked forward to when the pretty nurse showed up. The guy Jenny felt the most sorry for, and maybe it was because he had hand wounds like Jerry, was a smart but sort of awkward acting Jewish boy from Queens, New York. Jenny liked his accent and he said he liked hers too. He was young, barely nineteen, and couldn't even light his own cigarettes with his burnt and bandaged hands. She would make her rounds of all the wounded but usually stop and talk with him for a while. His name was David Shuler. His family had relatives in Poland and France. He told Jenny they had lost contact with the families in Poland. He hated the Germans and decided to enlist. He was disappointed when he was sent to the Pacific. He had wanted to go fight the Germans, but now it looked like his fighting days were over. The War Continues for Nurse Jenny Ch. 03 The poor guy had to be helped with everything, very much like Jerry. The only difference was that David could see where Jerry couldn't at first. The nurses had to give him baths, help him with bowel movements, and do everything for him including lighting his cigarettes, a habit he had only started since joining the military too. Jenny enjoyed hearing his stories of New York City. The many attractions like the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Yankee Stadium, and Coney Island. She had never been to New York City or any big city even close to that size. Her parents had told her about Chicago but she had never been to either place. David was a good listener and surprisingly never seemed to tire of her stories about Lincoln and the family's farm. They joked about milking cows, feeding pigs, and gathering eggs from chickens. He usually had some more city experiences to relate that offset her more rural farming ones like playing baseball in the streets and going to temple all the time. The last few times Jenny had helped him pee had been a little awkward for both of them. He had definitely started to get excited by her helping him get himself ready for the bedpan. His penis was smaller in stature than Brad's and certainly no match for Russ or Jerry. But she liked him and it didn't bother her that much to help him out. Jenny had started the conversation today asking about letters from home, "Did you get any mail from State-side?" "One letter from my Mom," David replied. "Nothing unusual except Uncle Abe got drunk at my cousin's bar mitzvah and fell into the band." They laughed about that and David asked if Jenny got any letters too. "Yeah, one from my parents and two from guys I knew on Midway," Jenny said. "Oh, friends of yours?" David asked. "Yeah, definitely, friends," Jenny agreed but for a second her thoughts were elsewhere. "More than friends ... boyfriends perhaps?" David questioned, trying to be funny, but also sounding curious. "Maybe, good friends, though," Jenny just said, and told him about Jerry and his wounds so similar to David's except for the vision. "Have you had any boyfriends?" David asked, sort of out of the blue. "Yes, back in Lincoln I had a boyfriend," Jenny said. "And many people would have said Jerry was my boyfriend too. My first boyfriend was killed by a German U-boat sinking the ship he was on." "Oh, sorry," David said. "It's okay. I see firsthand how war is hell. I'm dealing with it fine now," Jenny claimed. "What about you? Any girlfriends back home in Queens?" "No, none," David admitted. "Well, when you get home a wounded veteran I bet more than a few girls will want to get to know you," Jenny said. "Hardly with these mangled hands," David lamented. "You'll be fine soon and able to do things for yourself," Jenny said. "Speaking of which I think I could use a pee," David stated. "Okay," Jenny said. She retrieved the urinal and moved the sheets from David's legs. She glanced at him briefly before she parted his bedclothes. He was watching her intently. Her hand took his penis and positioned it onto the urinal so he could pee. She told him okay but nothing happened right away except it started to grow again. "Do you need me to pull the corners up for you?" Jenny asked seriously, like any good nurse. "No, that wouldn't help," David said. "Should I leave for a little bit?" Jenny continued. "No, please don't," David said. "Are you able to go?" Jenny asked seriously again. "I think so. Just give me a minute," David said. Jenny tried to think of something to say to take his mind off things but couldn't. Instead she glanced between his worried looking face and his growing erection. He may have been smaller than her other guys but his dick knew how to grow. It was lengthening and expanding nicely. Still he couldn't or wouldn't pee. "David, I think I should leave and let you do this," Jenny stated. "Do you have to?" "I don't think you're going to be able to go otherwise," Jenny proclaimed. "Maybe we should wait till later," David explained nervously. "Maybe you can hold off till Rose and Thelma come on shift next?" Jenny queried. "I'd rather do it with you though," David said. "Why's that?" Jenny asked. "Because ... because you have the softest hands here," David offered as a reason. "Thank you, David. But does that have anything to do with your reason for this?" Jenny said pointing to his now full erect cock. "Well, you're the prettiest nurse here too," David confessed. "Thank you, again," Jenny said and looked around the dark room. The patients all seemed to be asleep except David and Bea was off retrieving supplies. "You can't go when it's like this, can you?" Jenny said and this time she rested her hand on his inner thigh. "No," David gulped. "If it goes down then you could go, right?" "Yes," David groaned. "You want me to help you with that?" Jenny asked. "Okay," David replied. Jenny could see a drop of pre-cum forming in the slit on top. Her hand slid up his thigh to briefly graze his tight scrotum. "Oh, god," David moaned. "Has any girl ever touched you before, David?" Jenny asked. "No," David responded. Jenny moved her finger to rub the drop of pre-cum around on the head. David stiffened and groaned loudly. "Shh," Jenny whispered. "Try to keep this our secret." Her finger lightly teased down the head and along the sensitive nerve endings below it. That was all it took. David moaned and his sperm jettisoned from his cock straight up in the air and then dropped down on Jenny's hand and his groin. His cock rocketed several thick strong, white ropes into the air. About the third, they diminished in strength and the last two more or less oozed out onto Jenny's fingers. "Oh, sorry," David said when his composure returned somewhat. "I couldn't help myself..." "It's quite alright," Jenny said, draping his shrinking cock into the opening of the urinal. "I know guys release fast at first." Jenny was subconsciously rubbing the sperm on her hand back and forth between her fingers to feel its texture and consistency. She noticed what she was doing before he did and quickly went to get a towel. She cleaned her hand and him and threw the towel in the soiled linen. When she got back the bedpan had pee in it. "Oh, I see someone went already," Jenny said with a laugh. "Thanks to your help," David declared. They laughed quietly together and Jenny emptied the used urinal. When she returned, she replaced David's bedclothes but not before noticing his small flaccid cock. She tucked him into the sheets again and smiled at him. "Thanks, Ma'am," David said with thankful eyes. "Call me, Jenny, David. You're welcome. Now get some sleep." "That should be easier now," David avowed with a smile. "I would imagine," Jenny whispered. "Goodnight." Jenny did her final rounds quickly and she and Bea left when Thelma and Rose arrived. The women exchanged greetings and Bea and Jenny exited the building to cross the open grounds of the base back to their barracks. Along the way they talked as Bea and Jenny both lit cigarettes. "Hey, I'm supposed to meet those two sailors you saw me with at the dance. You want to come along?" "No, thanks, Bea. I appreciate that but I'm not ready yet to go out with anyone else." "Still thinking only of Russ?" Bea questioned. "You could say that. Actually, he's all I think about most of the time," Jenny proclaimed. "I worry all the time for his safety." "I have faith the good Colonel is going to come back to you," Bea said. "But what about Jerry and Brad?" "I like Brad but he's not in my heart the way Russ and Jerry are," Jenny stated. "Why do you think so much about Russ only if you're still sweet on Jerry too?" "I guess it's because Russ is in harm's way and Jerry is safe back home in Nebraska. If the roles were reversed, I'd probably be worried more about Jerry." "I don't know whether to be jealous or happy I don't have your man problems," Bea claimed. "Well, don't be jealous. It's no fun," Jenny attested. "What're you going to do for fun then tonight?" "May and I will probably play gin again," Jenny mused. "You two are a wild bunch," Bea mocked. "Yeah, we're pretty sad when our men are away," Jenny agreed. "I know May and you must think me a terrible slut like Dorrie and Viv but I tell you it is helping me to get through this damn war to have some fun with these guys. You haven't lived, Jenny, till you've had three guys fucking and playing with you at once," Bea extolled with a snicker. "That would be interesting, I guess, but I'm more of a one guy woman." "You're right. It fits you better than whoring it up like Viv, Dorrie, and me," Bea claimed. They tossed their finished cigarettes aside and entered the barracks. They ran into Viv and Dorrie on the way out. "Want to come with us tonight?" Viv asked with a naughty smile. "Got plans," Bea replied. "How about the beauty queen?" Dorrie said, licking her lips seductively. "Not me," Jenny affirmed. "Jenny, you should have some fun while Russ is away," Viv said. "That's what I told her and even offered to share but she's determined to play gin with May," Bea injected. "Oh, fun," Dorrie mocked sarcastically. "Jenny, if I had your looks I'd be fucking all night," Viv stated. "No, you wouldn't," Jenny tried to claim. "Maybe not. As it is, by the time this war's over, my pussy's going to be as big as the Holland Tunnel," Viv said jokingly. "That's right. That's why using your mouth more than your cootch is the way to go," Dorrie claimed laughing. "You're both something else," Bea professed. "That's dirty talk," Jenny declared. "You shouldn't talk like that." "You're right, Jenny. We're the worst kind of whores. See you, girls," Viv said and she and Dorrie exited laughing. "Those two think way too little of themselves," Jenny stated. "They're better than that." "Maybe so, Jenny. But this crazy war makes idiots of us all one way or another," Bea proclaimed. The news reached the nurses on Tulagi with some regularity of the events on Guadalcanal across the sound. They learned of the raids by the Marines on the Japanese positions and the heavy losses of the first engagement. Many of those wounded arrived to them the next day and they were back to regular hours quickly. Charlotte warned them of the belief another major assault was coming. The nurses of Tulagi prepared for the worst. And hopefully the worst wouldn't involve Russ and Phil.
