A letter to Rocky

Dear Rocky, my friend,

I miss you.

It is December. I went Christmas shopping to day and found a store
that specializes in stuff for cats and dogs. On the shelves there were
memorial plaques, they were very nicely done in solid brass with a
weathered finish and a place for a dog tag to go. One said "When you
think of me please remember that I was usually a good dog, and that we
loved each other."

Damn.

I had to leave. I was embarrassed to shed a tear where it could be seen.
Embarrassed to explain to people who couldn't know or care.

I will go back there though, I realize now that it has been far, far, too
long since there has been a present under the tree for you. This time I
will tear the paper to little shreds for you.

I have read about a place called "The Rainbow Bridge". I can't tell how
much I would like to think that it, or someplace like it exists, and
that your spirit is not gone never to be again.

Your den buddy Rusty is here as I write to you. He is asleep and snoring
softly as usual. He is now older that you were when you left us, and I
fear he will be leaving this place soon. Welcome him when he comes, and
if you can please, please wait for me. Even though I am some times
ashamed of the great love you offered and gave to me.

I miss you, and I do remember.

With all my heart, Love,

                                        Tim
