>I turn the key in the ignition and it comes to life. Borrowing mom's van for our little double date. I check the rearview and pull out, heading on over to pick up the group at school. Can't believe I'm willingly dating that half skinnie. The little voice in the back of my head pushes the sensation of her soft scales and feathers right to the front. Okay maybe I can believe I'm dating her.
>I pull into the front of Volcano High and honk, the three sitting on a bench out front, turning their heads to look at me. They quickly hop up and in, Amber taking the seat next to me while Mel and Greene hop in the second row.
>"Alright, we're off to that buffet on Pachy street, yeah?" I quickly put it back into gear.
>"Yup, place's called "Buffalo Buffet"." Amber fiddles with the seat a bit as she speaks.
>"Oh hey let's stop off at the liquor store nearby first." I go stock still as my eyes shoot up to the rearview mirror. Mom's in the car, back row.
>I spy everyone else's horrified gazes, locked up and panicked.
>"M-Mom!?"
>"The one and only, now go on." I quickly shift into gear and start driving, extra carefully now.
>The mood is completely dead, not a conversation dared to be started with her here.
>"Aw cmon you lot, just pretend I'm not here." She laughs and kicks her legs up on the back of the second row. Damnit mom.
>We force out the smallest of small talk, barely anything until we start to get close to the buffet.
>"Oh that's the place, on the right. Go on." I sigh and pull into the drive through.
>As I pull up to the window I notice the guy manning the counter eye me up and down.
>"Can I help you?"
>"Two cases of tres-equis!" Is called from the back.
>The guy pauses and looks over me, face unamused.

>"I'm gonna need some ID."
>I feel a purse land squarely in my lap, thankfully it's light enough to not harm the tenders. I pull mom's wallet out and hand her ID to the guy. He squints at me, then peeks his head out the window and sees mom sprawled in the back. He sighs and moves back to grab the cases.
>I unbuckle and lean back to hand mom her bag back, she pulls the wallet out and hands me some cash out of it.
>The guy comes back and passes me the things, they're quite heavy. I place them in the floorboard between the chairs and pay the guy, getting the change and mom's Id back. A quick thanks and I start hit the road again, now pulling into the little buffet. Mom calls from the back again as I do.
>"Hey I'ma borrow the van, text me when you need me to come get you lot."
>I step out and nod at her, at least she's not crashing this part, too.
>"See ya soon Jackie. Oh and use protection!" I facepalm as she embarrasses me one more time before pulling out. It's like she's trying to keep me alone as best she can.
>The group finally fully relaxes and we get our buffet on, the place serving absolute heaps and heaps of food. Even Mel finds a good serving of veggie options to dig into. This is nice. Wasn't too big of a fan of the idea of a double date but it's a great way to ease the pressure of being alone with the single prettiest girl I've ever seen. Shut up, hormones.
>The date goes well but I quietly dread having to have mom come pick us up. I hope she didn't get into those beers yet, either. I shoot her a quick text as we finish up our absolute mountain of food.
>I get a confirmation text that she'll be here soon and I relay the information to the group. A quick talk about how weird my mom is arises.
>"She always like this?" Greene looks at me in solidarity.
>I sigh "Yeah she is. She's usually pretty cool but it feels like I have no privacy sometimes." I get a knowing nod from Amber.

>We step out and mom pulls the van up. I go for the front door to find it locked. I sigh in frustration and go for the back door, looks like she's forcing us to sit together.
>We scramble in and I notice the distinct lack of smell of alcohol. At least she's held off on that. I almost trip as I get all the way in. The cases are still in here. She must not have gone home.
>"Alright lovebirds, you guys got an extra half hour?" Mom's looking at us through the rearview.
>I look around to see shrugs. The hell is she doing?
>"Alright! We're going to the beach!" I sigh. With any luck she hasn't packed my swim trunks.
>We shoot off and within a few minutes find our way to a small quiet spot on the beach. Not too many people out now. We step out and glance over each other again nervously as mom pulls out a big umbrella and a few towels, handing them to me.
>"Alright be back in like half an hour. Clean up after yourselves." I blink at her as she also drops the cases in my arms. Wait, what?
>"Hey wait!" I try to say anything but she borderline sprints back to the van to get in and drive away, leaving me standing there overloaded with beach tools and alcohol.
>"Uh, you good?" Amber comes over to lighten my load.
>"Yeah, sorry about this." I groan as she grabs a case.
>"Wait, isn't this the beer?" Amber looks over it.
>"Yeah, she's got this weird idea in her head that teens have to underage drink. Think this is her way of giving her blessing." I sigh and shake my head.
>Mel looks worriedly at us but Greene just shrugs.
>"When in Rome." Can't be too bad I guess.
>We end up just meandering down to an empty spot, towels down and umbrella up. We sit in silence looking at the drinks.
>"To hell with it." Amber leans forward and drags bottle out, popping the top with her talon and taking a swig.
>"Wow that sucks." she wipes her mouth as she finishes. I notice Greene's grabbed two, handing me one as he leans back. He looks to Mel who's looking apprehensive.

>"This is the part where we peer pressure you into drinking, Melissa." Amber chuckles out.
>She sighs and goes with the flow, grabbing one herself.
>We share a quick toast and all drink. I'm on Amber's side here this is awful. Guess you don't drink for the taste. I look over to see Melissa is the only one not cringing.
>"Really, Mel?" She looks up a bit surprised.
>"It's not that bad. I get why people like these." Disagree but you do you.
>We end up resuming our previous conversations, mostly inane chattering. I think I can start to feel a buzz coming up. It's like something's holding my nerves still.
>Amber scooches over to me and leans a bit on me.
>"So what changed?" Greene and Melissa are matching our position, the former posing the question.
>"Huh?"
>"You and Amber. From what I remember you hated us "half-breeds"." I cringe at him. Mel raises her eyebrows at me in surprise.
>"Got over it, I guess." I shrug, not really fully truthful.
>I notice Mel smiling a bit, she chimes in. "Love conquers all." Guess she's the poetic type.
>I blush and glance down to Amber. She's resting her head on me. God I wish we could stay like this forever.
