>It's been a few days since papa and I had to replant mama's garden and it seems to have gone well. Papa's idea of joining mama in the garden still ringing in my head, I decide today is the day, everyone else is busy or grounded (Looking at you, Cynthia) so I might as well do something to spend the day. I sheepishly step out the back door and trot over to the garden where mama has already started.
>"Mija?" mama asks as I approach, sitting back on her legs and tilting her sombrero back to look up at me.
>"H-hola, mama. You need any help?" I ask, breaking eye contact due to guilt.
>She sits back a moment, contemplating before smiling at me. "Go get some gloves out of the shed." I quickly nod and with some pep in my step I trot over and do as instructed, the same pair as I had grabbed last time.
>As I'm walking back to the plot of flowers I catch papa looking through the kitchen window at us, winking at me and shooting me a thumbs up. I smile back and give a quick wave before I step to mama again.
>"Okay, what're we doing today?" I ask, kneeling next to mama.
>"Well, mija, first we gotta weed then water the seeds you and An-on replanted the other day." I flinch at her mention of our little gardening trip.
>"Sorry mama we didn't want to upset you..." I say, trying not to cause a fight.
>"It's okay, mija I can't be mad at you two bonding, even if it costs me some flores." she smiles back
>"And you don't have to do this if you feel you need to apologize. Just trying to fix your mistake the first time was enough." mama reaches over and gently rubs my arm
>"Oh actually mama I don't mind it that much. When papa and I were out here I found it kind of comforting to get everything in order. I also wanted to say sorry for putting gardening down all this time as well." I say, struggling to articulate my point very well.
>"Mija..." mama says, covering her snout with her hand before leaning over to hug me.
>"M-mama come on..." I protest uselessly

>She pulls back and guides me right down into the nitty-gritty, weeding, watering, trimming. The whole shebang. I really do find myself enjoying the time spent out here now, not just the gardening itself but watching mama work like this and how into it she gets really paints her in a different light. I'd not seen her like this before.
>"You've got a real green thumb." mama compliments me
>"Guess it runs in the family, even papa is good at it." I say, sitting straight and stretching.
>"Not at the start he wasn't." mama says, standing. I match her.
>"Coulda fooled me. Seemed to know exactly what he was doing." I say, legs slightly sore.
>"He worked his butt off to learn." she says, a warm smile as she remembers.
>"For you?" I ask
>"Si." she responds cleanly
>I imagine for a second my papa as anything less than what he is now and I simply can't fathom it. Mama notices and starts a story.
>"He grew a lot. Wasn't happy with himself. He wanted to be better and wanted I tagged along for the ride. Don't ask his side of the story he'll tell you I carried him on my back to the finish line." she says as we walk to the shed to put away the tools and gloves. I'd never heard this story before. Mama notices my intent listening and continues.
>"It was during highschool. He had transferred to Volcano High at the halfway point of the semester. He was being bullied at his old school and needed a breather." I can barely believe it. That mountain of a man being bullied by anyone? He'd snap them like a twig.
>"I don't believe that. Him?" I ask, incredulously
>"He used to be a frail thing, Mija." My head spins trying to picture it.
>"He had a tough time starting out then we met at after school beautification. I didn't like seeing him hate himself so I had a talk with him. He decided then and there he had enough of the pity party and picked himself up." mama says, warmth permeating her entire figure.

>"From there we started dating and the rest is history." She finishes, as we are now almost at the door to the kitchen.
>It's nice to hear stories like this. I make a mental note to talk to mama more like this. I smile at her as we step into the kitchen.
>"An-on doesn't like to talk about it much, that part of his life was not a very nice one." Mama pats me on the shoulder as papa rounds the corner to greet us
>"Mi amors!" he says cheesily as he drags up both into a big hug. The thought of him ever struggling makes my heart ache and I hug back with my entire being.
