AND WHO SAID WE'RE STOPPING?

>The crisp cool air blows through me, the damp breeze cooling my entire body. I breathe deep and-
>"Wwwwhhhhyyyyyyy...." A moan from the baryonyx behind me.
>"Come on Nick just try to enjoy this." I sigh, turning to face the blue woman limp and splayed out on the deck chair.
>"FFfffffffiiiiiiiinnnnne." she croaks out , stretching her limbs and then reaching down towards the cooler full of beer. The only way I'd coax her onto this trip in the first place.
>"Catch." I hear her say and I whip around to grab the flying bottle, my reaction barely quick enough to the catch the thing before it sailed right passed me and into the water off the side of the boat. Dad borrows this thing from a friend from time to time and that privilege extends to me, somehow. Dude that owns the thing seems to not give a rats-ass if it even sinks, must be one of those quiet billionaires or something, not that I'm complaining about being able to come out and dick around on the lake for free.
>I glance back to Nick who's already drained her first bottle and is on to the second.
>"Not so fast, we gotta actually teach you how to fish before you get too slammed to remember." I pester her.
>She squints at me suspiciously, slowly lowering the bottle into the cooler before quickly ripping it back up and popping the top in one motion, dragging it to her lips and scrambling to her feet to run to the back of the sizeable boat.
>I don't bother giving chase as it'll likely just end up with us both in the drink so I just wait.
>As she finishes the bottle she takes a stance, ready to pounce I follow her gaze to see it aimed right at the cooler. Thankfully I'm closer so a step forward brings my leg in front of it. Putting on my best stern father gaze I can.
>Nick stands straight up after realizing she's been bested and strides over to the rods lined up against the side.
>I sigh in relief and pop the top back on the cooler to meet her over near the things.

>"So you really like doing this. Unironically? Not as like a torture thing for others?" Nick asks, blowing some hair out of her face
>A bit exasperated at this point I answer with as little shortness as I can "Yeah, it's relaxing. Lot of time to think and contemplate. Also an excuse to day drink."
>Nick doesn't seem to enjoy the concept of doing nothing much but agrees the day drinking sells it at the very least.
>"So it's pretty simple, bait on line, cast line out, tuck it in the little slot there" I gesture to the hook on the boats edge to hold the rod in place "Then when you hear it pulling you come reel it in."
>Nick looks at me as if I've just spit in her face "You're kidding. That's it? No calculating where to put the bobber, wait bait to use or when to reset your line?"
>"Really, it's waiting more than anything."
>Nick's eyes threaten to do a full 360 backwards into her skull, kicking her head us as they roll upwards "My god you've sent me to die out here."
>"Look you might find you like it. Connecting to nature and sorting yourself out, yknow?" I fight
>A strange look of pain shoots across Nick's face at the mention of being in your own thoughts again, something I've never seen before with her.
>As quickly as it came it leaves and she simply shrugs, picking a rod up and doing her best Goofy impression "Alright Anon, it's time for the perfect cast. Relax, Feet apart, windup and LET HER FLY." she does a little jig while flailing the line around threatening to catch me with the hook before absolutely sending the hook, taking several seconds to hit the water a good 30 feet away. I chuckle at her show and proceed to cast out near hers, not quite as flashily but I get about the same distance.
>A pause "And now we wait." she says, scrunching her face up to exaggerate her disdain
>"And drink" her face instantly snaps into joy

>She scrambles over to the cooler and proceeds to help herself. It's pretty cute to watch her desperately chase sobriety away like that but the small reaction earlier still chips at me. I ask
>"Not a big fan of being alone with your thoughts?" I ask, Nick's been a friend long enough that a small prying question won't kill the vibe, surely.
>Nick freezes. I can't see her face as she's turned away from me but I hear her speak, uncertainty in her voice, a rarity.
>"Uh yeah no I really instead like to be doing stuff, not just thinking. Yeah." I detect a hint of pain under there but I guess it's best not to pry. I saunter over and grab my own beer and hold it up
>"Cheers."
>"Cheers." she reciprocates, putting on a plastic smile.
>And so we fish. And drink. and fish. and drink.
>Conversation has ground to a halt by hour three. I simply stew in my thoughts of good times, pipe dreams and blissful nothingness. I glance over to see how our gator is doing and...
>She looks as if she wanted to die. She's brought her knees up to rest her snout on, her tail wrapped around her as well, eyes down to the deck. My heart tightens up. Shit, this is my fault. I speak up
>"Shit, sorry Nick I didn't mean to bring you down like this I just thought it'd be a nice thing to do, hang out and relax. Sorry..." I say, trying to bring her out of her funk, I've never really seen Nick this down before.
>She snaps to attention and her face quickly goes back to a sort of plastic smile. "Ah nah just bad memories flared up, nothing much dude." she deflects
>"...you okay?" I ask
>Nick pauses a while, face neutral before turning away, responding with her own question.
>"Do you like who you are?"
>I'm stumped for a moment, unable to formulate an answer a moment.
>I come to an internal consensus. "Well, yeah. I'm not in love with who I am but I like myself enough... Nick?" I ask, treading carefully

>"Hypothetically" she starts, her voice quiet and distant "what would you do if you didn't? None of that "just change what you don't like bullshit either"."
>My mind flits back to Fang for a moment, a long ago memory. "That's tough." I say, collecting my thoughts a moment
>"...well honestly I guess I'd hide it. Try to keep the dark parts under wrap and just show people the things that I want them to see. " I say, thinking back to how into anime I used to be, still kind of am but thankfully that personality trait has muted itself.
>"And- and if there was someone you really wanted to show who you were, but you were terrified they'd hate you do you think you could do it?" she asks, voice shaking now
>"... I don't know, Nick." I say, my heart going out to the poor woman.
>We sit in silence a few moments before Nick clears her throat and snaps up. She turns to me with a genuine smile on her face again.
>"Alright I need a few more beers." she dives back into the cooler. I relax as she seems to have beaten whatever that was about.
>As she's digging in I hear the rod tug.
>I shoot to my feet as Nick beats me there, her reactions really are something else. It's her line, too. She quickly rips it up and reels in, tugging on the line and leading the fish longways to tire it out, as I'd instructed during some downtime. Not but a few moments later and we've caught the thing. A small bass, about the size of two hands.
>Nick whips her head around to me flashing a huge toothy grin. "First damned try, can I get any-" she freezes as she says that a quick flash of pain across her face.
>"I-I uh. I caught one." she says, a much weaker smile this time but eyes looking to mine, asking for reassurance. I gladly give it to her
>"Great work. Take the hook out at throw it back." I say patting her on her back.
>"Hey can we take a picture of the thing though? I wanna show the dudes when we get back." Another big grin across her face, it's infectious

>"Sure, stand back. Lemme grab my phone." I go rooting in my pockets and dig out old reliable and turn it sideways. Focusing pretty well on Nick and her catch.
>I take a few pictures, having her pose with a few times before we decide to release it. I go over them before having her break stance and note how happy she is in them. I smile back at my phone sappily before returning to her and getting the poor thing back in the water.
>Nick watches it swim away for a while, gaze still out on the lake as she speaks to me.
>"You were right. I liked this a lot." she speaks, a contentness and softness in her voice completely new to me. The lack of teasing and bragging also catching me slightly off guard. I decide to not pursue the thought
>"You up to do this again?" I simply ask back
>"Yeah. I'd love to." she says, turning to face me, her face in a soft gentle smile.

Fin. Taste of Nick pain.
