I wanted a warm, airy look to the colours in this piece, and did a fairly decent job of it, I think.  I used various browns as the base for the whites, and that did a lot to tone down how bright they might be, and make the light look more filtered (he's in one of those cool Japanese rooms with the sliding paper doorways :).
