I was also raised Catholic until I was about ten and then my parents were like, "Do what you feel is right in the world, we won't judge you for what religion you choose in life". All paraphrased of course but nonetheless they gave me the choice. I looked into all religions and some philosophy (It was not required in my curriculum so I never took a course).
My problem is how churches in the same town, whether Baptist or Catholic or Protestant or whatever, they all said that since they (other churches/churchgoers) didn't go to their church, they would all burn in hell...When they all follow in the respects of the Bible. This has always bugged me and makes me despise organized religion all the more. My sister actually became Buddhist believe it or not and I like to follow the rules of Karma for my own sake in case you are curious.
And as for this "Ultimate Hapiness"? Of course it is convincing to a lot of people. People who don't know what their meaning is in life, they feel inadequate/unwanted in the world and will strive to make something for themselves. Religion's biggest customer are these people of faith who believe that there is something for them in the afterlife, even if they did not do much in the mortal realm. It's comforting and makes the ease of death more bearable especially when one faces it in the near future.
I feel that all religions have a place in the world, but to convert people by force is a big no-no for me, I get so upset about Jehovah's Witnesses who harass me weekly because I jokingly said I was a Scientologist to get them to go away like almost a year ago. Atheism also deserves it's place in the world. Everyone has the right to believe in whether or not there is higher power. Even if Atheists believe in ghosts which wouldn't qualify them as Atheists rather they would be Agnostic would they not?
Philosophy has always been dear to me. I have my moral code more adjusted to philosophical quotes among the centuries rather than the Bible or the Koran or whatever other religious novelty that is out there. Although there is something to learn from every religion or philosophy that can make you a better person if you take the teachings to heart. I actually enjoy reading through the King James version and find it to be so cruel and accurate to how the world really is.
Look at me ramble again, I better stop before I become incoherent. By the way I see that very few people seem to want to post in this thread, kind of lame when only so few do. Ask me anything cause I get bored believe it or not!
