If "furry" is wrongly associate with anything, it's the stereotype that furries are all plushophiles that yiff in fursuits. "Thro" is a term you'll have to explain, and as soon as it's equated to furries in any way, shape or form, those who'd get nasty over a furry will get nasty over you, too. Simply put: people who willingly make negative associations by believing everything they read or hear will NOT be dissuaded from this. They, consciously or subconsciously, enjoy being able to see a short label and believe they instantly know everything they need to know. It amounts to laziness.

The fandom is a million different things to different people. It IS a fetish, but it isn't JUST a fetish. It did start as such, but it has expanded.

Most non-furries don't give a rat's ass about the layers or interest levels in furry fandom, anime fandom, sci-fi fandom, SCA/Renaissance fandom, etc. They - as a lot of people do, as it is human nature to do - prefer to be able to mentally stick a neat, tidy, concise descriptive label on everything (and everyone) and then file, categorize and organize them. This interesting thing called "depth," as in, "the furry fandom has depth to it," doesn't work when you're trying to fit everything under a short, pithy descriptor.

Thank you. I won't really make fun of those who claim they were furry before they knew what furry was, because I know that feeling: when I was eight, nine or so, every movie I found with anthropomorphic characters, I always picked one and had an intense longing to either be, or be friends with, that character. (See attached, my first introduction at age six or so.) There was, I am certain, an affinity from an early age, for reasons I don't understand. I don't happen to be in the group who believes that this means I am on a spiritual level, was in a past life, etc. one of these creatures; I'm most assuredly 100% human. But there's an attraction, and it wasn't sexual at all from the start. So that absolutely can and does happen to people.

It nonetheless doesn't define me as a person; it's one of countless facets of me, most of which never really sit on the surface or get worn on my sleeve. I know the public's general opinions. I don't hide it, nor do I show it.

For those in the fandom, deeply or lightly: The fandon is to you what you take from it. The fandom will eventually become what you put into it.

Just to make this clear to people, anthro means human, thro means nothing. When I take this into anthropomorphic it's human shaped, but thromorphic is just shaped. So a thro fox is just a normal fox, meaning if I call myself a thro I'm calling myself a "animal fucker" good job OP at learning Latin. Maybe just anthropomorphic fan works, or normally a furry.
