the site can be wiped at any time, through the captcha. we are completely defenseless.

until the actual site owner does the kind of basic defensive site setup like automated backups that he should have done years ago we're in a pretty bad position.

there is nothing i can do to make the site stay clean anymore. i give up until bartimaeus or someone else fixes the problems we've been asking to fix since the first time the site got wiped.

also yes i can sticky threads to protect them, which is what i did to the stuff i got here in time to save.

but that's fucking stupid.

and just to clear things up on the technical side, here's what happened:

there is one person who finds it funny to mess with this site. it is funny to this person because it works; he messes with us, we stay messed with for months, even years. he knows the site has a captcha in the first place because of his actions and that keeps him entertained so he stays.

if all the effort to harass us could be erased with a simple backup restore, he'd get bored and leave for some softer target.

anyway, for the longest time he only had the automated posting thing that worked without captcha. i don't know if someone else wrote the script or the attacker did, that's irrelevant. the point was the captcha stopped it.

now it's been modified somehow. my best guess is it'll pull out the captcha image from the automated posting, display it to the attacker and let him solve it, then feed the solution back to the attack. So, a real person has to sit there doing captchas but the spam flood proceeds as fast as he can type captchas which is much faster (especially with site lag from the attack) than i can click through the moderator panel to delete the new threads.

and that, in a nutshell, is why we are fucked and why backups is the only answer.


i know i'm a dick but i really do like this site. if i sound especially like a dick right now it's because being powerless to defend the site is pretty fuckin annoying. especially when i accurately predicted these attacks and offered solutions months and months in advance.

What's the point of staying on this site to contribute when it's all gonna get deleted anyway? There are plenty of other furry imageboards that we can spend our time on that do not have this problem. e621, fchan, ychan, I could even go onto sites like FA and, DA. There are tons of say, "competition" that I can go to over pawsru.

The reason I stay here is because I like contributing good smut/artwork that I find around the internet, but not if it's just all gonna be nuked again and again! I thought those in charge would have learned from last time, but I guess not! The fact that the only ones who are in charge either won't or can't do anything in the event of a hacking just tells me that this site isn't really worth going to or contributing to. I have been around this site since nearly its inception, and I believe Mod c49191 has as well, or at least very close to it. This is nothing new to us. We and multiple other people have constantly tried to get Bart to actually do something to prevent this kind of thing from happening, but he pretty much said himself he doesn't care enough.

Some people were all too happy to fork up some of their own money and donate it to keep this site running, and you're telling me that no one can put in any effort to keep a backup of files or to do something useful against a hacking attempt?

If I were one of those unfortunate to donate to this site, I'd be pretty upset that I wasted my money on people who can't put in the effort. the backups are working great, it's restoring them that is holding me up. i don't have a lot of time to spend on this and it takes several hours for each attempted restore so it's taking me fucking ages to figure out what i'm doing wrong. i still haven't successfully restored a backup and actually opened the restored site in a browser and i'm not going to trust the backups until i have

i am trying to extract a 13 gb tar.gz on debian linux + whatever packages it took to get kusaba up and running, i forget exactly. it is an archive of the entire site folder's files and also a dump of the database.

creating the zip on the server works great and i can extract it on windows fine, the file itself is not the problem, it's either failing in moving the file there or in extracting it. always get unexpected eof.

if you or anyone has some insight into why i'm such an idiot it would be really awesome. its fucking stupid that i'm stuck on something like "unzipping file" but there it is. i'm not willing to trust the backup until i've been able to test it.

yes, i'm root on my testbed. i don't have root on the real server. i'm fairly confident that the database dump and file archive are being created on the server side perfectly fine, i can download and open them on Windows without trouble. When I move them to my test VM the database dump works fine but the files archive fails to extract. The error is

tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now


The file archive is a tar.gz split into 1gb chunks. I feel like it's getting screwed up in the process of transferring it there but I can't imagine why.

here is my lazy backup script

(a) makes the revert very fast (rm -rf site && cp -a yesterday site) but some apps modify files in-place and backup may get lost - investigate if applicable in your case
(b) takes less inode table space, more general, but takes longer to apply backups (for d in day3 day2 day1; do cp -a $d site; done)

plus: always use llvm + snapshots or btrfs + snapshots to freeze the backed-up file system

the site's data is still being backed up every day. i can open the backups on windows, i'm fairly sure they're valid.

due to spending time at work and on a video game i code for i haven't really focused here at all. i have some vacation time coming up soon and i intend to get this backup nonsense worked out for sure once and for all and get rid of the stickies and captcha
