Is Second Life even a game? I thought it was more of a social network.

It's a video game nothing more. This same thing happens with people who play "Driving Simulators",Go head ...head on over to any Driving sim forums and call it a video game I guarantee you'll some jackass replies like...

"[insert game] is not a video game its a serious driving and street racing sim,"

"Welcome to the forums lol!!! [insert game] is a driving sim ;). dont forget to read the faq"

"I <3 surpas and it a SIM as in simulation"

"Spam ^"

The same can be said for any game with a strong online fallowing/online based games.

People that do that have always annoyed me greatly. A simulation is still a game in this respect. SL? Simulation, sure, but it's still a game. ARMA? game. etc.

It's like those people don't want to be associated with "gamers and their ilk" because of...whatever reason.

The definition of a "game" that I use is one that has a predefined goal, direction, or winning condition. A social game or sandbox game or simulation game, then, wouldn't really be a "game" in the same way as more traditional ones. I tend to call those "toys"; the Sim games are sometimes referred to as "software toys". You play with them in much the same way as a game, but there is no set direction that you're forced to go in.

For example: Chess is a game, but only if you use the pieces on the board in accordance to the rules that are set out. If a pair of little kids take the chess pieces and pretend they're actual kings/knights/castles and start playing with them in a completely unrelated way, they are using the chess pieces as a "toy", not a "game".

There can be some overlap. If you're playing SimCity, and you choose to do one of the predefined scenarios, you're playing a game. There is a set method to winning, victory conditions to fulfill, and it's possible to lose/fail. However, if you just play in normal mode, you can do badly (but one can do badly at playing with Legos or blocks, too) but you can never really lose; and there is very little restriction on what you want to do or can do.

In short, a "game" is defined mostly by whether or not it's possible to win or lose, or otherwise complete a set path/storyline.

what would you call a Rogue like game which is slang for a game with no end, Therefore, there is no goal to finish, as you only continue endlessly to the point of failure or giving up.

Initially I perceived SL as a game because of the ability to drive 'cars', ships, go on 'cruises' and so on.
I then interpreted as potentially a MMO game, because of similarities (shopping, upgrades, etc.), but in both the first and this case (as pointed out) there is no 'win'. You don't 'level up', you can't be super unique (a 110 Level Mage that wields dwarfen blood axes for example), no large lands can be acquired or conquered (like a SIMCity, Stronghold, etc.) nor any way to create large groups or corporations (EVE Online).
I then settled in agreement, while it is a sandbox environment initially (its first claim to fame was 'flying' and then second was seeing your 'feet in game'), its only reason it has continued on is the social interaction it provides visually over other chat mediums.
While directly threatened (and gave up the children/teen market to) IMVU, other competitors have not faired well in the marketspace as I seen, the economies still keep the Land Barons and big boy stores in business, but there is always change and modification to the scheme over all. When I saw the big 'land dump' going on and hints Micro$oft was looking for a better way to do avatars for XBox, I thought it was the writing on the wall, but SL still lives as it does and still doing things its own way.

I don't think it can ever be a MMO, I don't think it can ever achieve being a 'game', but will live and die on the how it can visually bring a better experiance to a chat interface, where the person has 100% control of the enviroment and 'story' for how it will play out. So a HiDef Social Network would be the best description for most I think.

At first I thought that Amazon thing was a joke, but I just looked it up and so it is.

Wow, that's kind of cheesy on LL's part. o_O What was wrong with the pricing/distribution model they have been going with for nearly a decade now?! Lame... >>
