Initially I perceived SL as a game because of the ability to drive 'cars', ships, go on 'cruises' and so on.
I then interpreted as potentially a MMO game, because of similarities (shopping, upgrades, etc.), but in both the first and this case (as pointed out) there is no 'win'. You don't 'level up', you can't be super unique (a 110 Level Mage that wields dwarfen blood axes for example), no large lands can be acquired or conquered (like a SIMCity, Stronghold, etc.) nor any way to create large groups or corporations (EVE Online).
I then settled in agreement, while it is a sandbox environment initially (its first claim to fame was 'flying' and then second was seeing your 'feet in game'), its only reason it has continued on is the social interaction it provides visually over other chat mediums.
While directly threatened (and gave up the children/teen market to) IMVU, other competitors have not faired well in the marketspace as I seen, the economies still keep the Land Barons and big boy stores in business, but there is always change and modification to the scheme over all. When I saw the big 'land dump' going on and hints Micro$oft was looking for a better way to do avatars for XBox, I thought it was the writing on the wall, but SL still lives as it does and still doing things its own way.
I don't think it can ever be a MMO, I don't think it can ever achieve being a 'game', but will live and die on the how it can visually bring a better experiance to a chat interface, where the person has 100% control of the enviroment and 'story' for how it will play out. So a HiDef Social Network would be the best description for most I think.
