Alright here we go again!

Gotta start this up from scratch but I will let you know what's happened.

Back on Saturday/Sunday our server provider had physical damage to their server, which in turn inflicted our site and caused it to be down.

This also corrupted the site's database and caused a lot of dead threads and 504s that everyone was having. We did a back up which was back up in January so all the threads are now current! We did lose a pretty decent amount of stuff but everything should work with no issues now. I will also try to get the database updated more often so we won't lose as much the next time something like this happens.

As for Ask Foxcroft, I will still run it so you guys can ask me anything about anything and keep things going. As for the last discussion we were having before the site was down I had ran a poll for a new CSS and black had won (87 out of 371 votes total{23%}) So that is what I will work on when I get some free time t do so. And I can always do more so don't think you will just be stuck with default or black.

Hope this sums up any unanswered questions and I'll be here if you need me.

Hmmm, the front pages still only show till 7/2011 or so. And stuff from after january 2012 is still here.
For example;

(I had it under favorites). All from feb or later. And it's not cached. Ctrl+F5 and it's still all there. No way to reply though... :/

Should we post porn yet?
This site has been hit by setbacks several times now and has always been so slow with content that I would say I've almost had enough.
Still, it's the best place to share porn without to much drama. Now if only something could be done so it would be easier to upload images.

Yes might as well get rid of broken threads/images. Clean up what won't work.

As for people not being able to post I am awaiting Bart's help, I'm not the best at php but I have informed him of the issue and hopefully we can get it fixed. My suspicions lead towards the fact that Bart had made thumbnails to be larger and it is doing something to cause issues.

Also any Janitors/Mods if you lost your status let me know, I was reverted back to Mod when we had the issue and had to get switched back. That'll be all for now.

Don't know how many threads have this problem, but it seems that replying to

http://pawsru.org/pawsX/m/res/8076.html

Also, it seems to have disappeared from the board completely.
>> No. 2950 ID: 19400c
>>2944
I know this sounds like a dick thing to say but since the images are now accessible that should be enough for now. It's throwing that error because of the Jan backup, and because of that you can still see it(it's saved in the databse) but its not rw type of thread anymore.

I only know so much of php, it reminds me of other languages but working with it I tend to stumble around. I'm still working on trying to get a multi-image uploader going but it's taking some time. I really don't want to make one from scratch and I need to find one that would incorporate with Kusuba X. I have been hitting up other sites that have this ability that are also using Kusuba X. Just need to find one that can suit this community.

I know it's a lot to cope with but I'm trying to figure out ways to help the site when I have free time. Last time I had off I ended up in Corpus Christi and Port Aransas. Just some this and that you know. And I'm still working on that new theme too.

Well I hope all of you (Americans) enjoyed your Independence day. I know I did!

I have Friday off so I will put in Anonsuba into the mix (you probably won't see it...maybe) and test it out to see if it is any better than Kusuba...From what I've heard there is mixed reviews all over the board. I'd like to see about getting IB4F like U-18 simply because I like their layout more but~ we don't have to go that route and we most likely can't.

Also if anyone wants to give me a color card for theme ideas (still working on Wolfies [it will be called Wolf and I plan on one called Bunny and one called Fox, maybe])

A lot of stuff happening lately for me I might be moving to Dallas in late Aug/Sept. so if that happens it might delay the work on the site.

I want to make great things happen for this site, especially while Bart is away in Europe. If anyone wants to contribute in anyway please feel free to let me know!

Hope this sums up some stuff if you have questions or concerns, as always please post in this thread and I'll get to it in reasonable time.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Anyway, you do have a valid point.

From what I have seen on other chans and imageboards, Photoshop Threads/Boards usually become popular if there are people willing to at least attempt to change images using Gimp, Inkscape, or other programs.

Another thing I have noticed from other threads was that Photoshop boards always seemed to have trouble finding where to start (hence why I asked). They usually end up starting in a "Miscellaneous" type board (such as "Requests", "Alternative", "Your Artwork", etc).

Also, they often are "cluttered" requests that have varies themes (you will find people requesting to add something, delete something, color something all in the same thread).

Lastly, photoshop threads always seem to "pop up" occasionally, last for a little bit, then die off (or don't get bumped). I then start to see people asking where the photoshop thread went.

Anyway, I am not sure how chans work in terms of programing, but I think adding a Photoshop Board would be nice. You are right, I am not sure how popular the board will become, it all depends on how many people are willing to work on the images. However, creating a seperate photoshop board instead of a thread would ensure that people are aware of it and will check it out. It will also allow people to create their own threads based on what they are willing to work with.

Sorry that this message is so long.

Ok I'm liking this, I've thought paws could do with a general art board at least i rather have that than changing Drawfags to upload none Oekaki art which was suggested before.
Maybe we can see about a new art board sometime in the future depending on how a Photoshop thread goes.
>> No. 3379 ID: c49191
>>3375
no, the site doesn't need more boards. everything's already too slow, things were better when it was just a single board with individual threads for each taste category.
>> No. 3381 ID: 19400c
>>3379
Actually more boards with categories helps make it easier for each board to open easier. Ever notice how /b/ on 4chan there is never the same thread there for more than a day? It's because there is so much volume that it can't handle more than the 10 or whatever pages it has for the board alone. Now imagine if this site just had one board for everything. I could extend it to have more pages but it would be too mish-mash and generally disorganized (You got intersex in my female thread etc. etc.) There are separate boards for a reason, but I don't want a million boards either.

I think that the idea of an art board is more than a little optimistic on my part, it's a bit to quite on paws to support an art board, at least right now.

Can we come up with a better name than something like "Photoshop thread" though, it needs a more smart ass name.

You do have a point. From what I have seen, artists boards or threads generally do not get that much attention. Then again, you have to look at why. Most artists (at least the ones that I watch) don't rely on chans to post here artwork. They use artwebsites such as Deviantart or Furaffinity, which is much more geared for displaying their artwork. So why post your artwork on a chan site? The only exception I have seen to this is when a already popular artist post work on a chan site that people can't find on their regular art account. This usually don't with more adult oriented artwork.

Photoshop Artwork/Threads are better suited to chans and imageboards, because of some art websites have copyright laws and won't allow modified images. Though some chans do have restrictions on what artwork can be posted. Also, the person posting the modified image can remain anonymous.

As for names, that is kind of tricky. Whenever I am looked for shopped images, they are most commonly tagged as "photoshop", "edit", or "modified."

I've always suspected that the reason why drawfags doesn't get that much attention is because it an oekaki board and oekaki is more of an anime culture thing.

The tendency for furry artist's to go the DA, FA route to get a copy of photo-ma-shop and spend three hours drawing something doesn't appeal to me (I'm very unmotivated AKA lazy). That's why i like oekaki, it can be an alternative to way of doing things.

but bbmbbf doesn't have a copyright for the art. He steals other's copyright (like Pokémon or MLP), makes some porn of it and then he sells it claiming that he has a copyright.
Then he complains when someone post the pics although he doesn’t have a copyright.

In my opinion (and I’m not the only one who see it like that) Krezz is abusing his power as an admin/mod just because he knows bbmbbf. He should stop to delete the Equestria Untamed threads.

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol or design, or a combination of words, phrases, symbols or designs, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.

A copyright is the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something (as a literary, musical, or artistic work)

So technically bbmbbf is doing something illegal by asking for money for this product.

Either way if you use someone or an entity's product or service that involves media in any way that would produce money for a benefactor that isn't apart of said company (i.e. Hasbro with MLP), they can come after you for infringement or ask for royalties for using their product if you didn't get any previous agreement.

I doubt he is hardly making anything to really get anything from Hasbro, at least not enough to be effecting their business.

Copyrights can expire! Trademarks don't! Hope that clarifies it for you.

Is it possible to make it so that we can choose to only view images (save for the OP) in threads? I ask because a lot of threads seem to be around 60% actual content and 40% arguing.

When people see a thread that's turned into a battleground or filled with content-less spam, It makes them a lot less likely to contribute to the thread. If viewers were able to make it so that only images were shown, I'm sure there would be a heck of a lot more contributors because then they wouldn't see any of the spam, the arguing, or the furrydrama.

The way I update it is to collect material whether it be on my own or from the donation materials box and then after I've collected enough I delete the old box and replace it with a fresh copy of the repository.

Sounds like a pain to redownload it, but it simplifies keeping everything where it is when people decide they want to move things and don't understand that moving things on dropbox changes things for everyone else.

Well, shit.

This is something that I wish I knew before using the report function. Oh well.

To clear things up. I don't care how much of an argument I get into on these boards, and the reports I sent weren't to get the other person banned. Only to get the posts removed to clean up the thread so that there's less clutter and more content.

I figured if people were just gonna pop in, not contribute at all to the thread, and either whine/complain/troll/etc that the posts should be removed.

I guess that's no longer the case which I guess goes back to this post >>4270

Of course, that was already answered.
>> No. 4356 ID: c49191
a while ago i got into an argument with another mod about deleting posts to clean up threads

some people want the site to just be about images and delete everything else so it's easy to see images

i think it's more entertaining to let the threads run through and see what people put there. words can be as entertaining as images and it's interesting to see what happens without constantly pruning things to fit some ideal

i realize dumb arguments are trash to a lot of people but they're pretty funny to some

anyway that sure is a giant care post but what the hell you're a good lady or dude and post a lot of good stuff

Oi, Foxcroft.

The spammer on /f and /fc is apparently manually entering all the captchas. What a fucking loser, I know.

I stickied several threads in /f to make sure that if he spams the boards like that again, he can do minimal damage. Is that cool?

I got no problem dropping in every other day and pinning the threads that are worth a fuck. Thought I'd get your okay first, though.

I thoughd every board who isnt sticky would have the opportunity to get up by the people who are actually using that thread.
Instead one of those sticky Threads who does´t get a single comment nor a image on them and still earns to stay at the 1st page.

That does not sounds very fair to my ears,
~But hey, that´s just me.

there's one thing this site has never had and i don't understand why

automatic database backups. for about as much effort as it takes to do it by hand you can make the server take backups for you

it can compress everything and delete older backups to save disk space or put them somewhere else and delete immediately if it's that important to keep usage low. (it should put them somewhere else anyway)

its all over google, not a difficult thing to figure out even with no linux experience. it should be there anyway
>> No. 4454 ID: 39bd35

Not if an active mod comes in every day or so and stickies the threads that are worth a shit, at least until we find a permanent solution to the problem of a no-life who manually enters captchas.

The biggest issue EVER is that Bart cant back it up everyday. If I can get him to do so once a day at least we'd be ballin' and people could do that shit all day long and it wouldn't really cause any issues because I can come and fix with a back up very easily.

>>4457

I know I'd hate for a site to die that I can have run and drama can be easily ignored because i just don't give a fuck. Let me talk to Bart about trying to see if we can at least do daily backups. Most basic automatic backup using cron:

mysqldump -u root -p[PASSWORD] [DATABASENAME] | gzip > /home/USER/backups/backup-paws-`'%m-%d-%Y'`.sql.gz
gzip -c /home/[USER]/public_html/*.* >/home/[USER]/backups/files_`'%m-%d-%Y'`.sql.gz

Havent tested for typos but should work. Just replace whatever is in brackets.
[DBPASSWORD] = The password for root MySQL login. If you want to use the applications then change root to the username and the password to the password for the username
[DATABASENAME] = The database name for the chan
[USER] = Your cpanel username or whatever user the server has you under.

I assume you use cpanel so you can add these from there. Look for "Cron jobs" or something similar under the advanced area. Set the timing to a day and you're golden. What I posted above are the commands (two seperate ones.)

If you want to do off-site backups go with the r1soft link I posted before. You can have them host the backups ($15 for 50 gigs) or you can find a cheap VPS with storage ($5 for license + cost of vps). The r1soft backup has more options if you want them.

WinSCP is a FTP/SFTP client. All it does is allow you to upload/download files. It has no other purpose.

For managing the actual domain (not the chan) do you go to a url such as:
http://www.pawsru.org/cpanel
http://cpanel.pawsru.org/
http://www.pawsru.org/webmin

Anything that gives you options to create FTP accounts, emails, databases etc? That's where you would find the area to add/edit/delete cronjobs.

If not, you need to download something called "Putty". This will allow you to actually access the server and do commands.
The site:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
The download:
http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.zip

Once extracted open up putty.exe and enter "pawsru.org" into the "Host name (or IP Address)" box. Without the quotes of course. Leave the port at 22. Then select "SSH" as the connection type. In the "Saved Sessions" input box put 'Pawsru' without quotes and click save. Then at the very bottom click "Open".

It should then load a command prompt type box and ask you for an username. Use the one you use in WinSCP. Then the password is the same as you use in WinSCP.

Once you're in you should type this (replacing username with the username you used to login):
cd /home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/
Then type:
mkdir backups

Then in a notepad file on your computer copy these commands:
mysqldump -u [DATABASE USERNAME] -p[DATABASE PASSWORD] [DATABASE NAME] | gzip > /home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/backups/backup-database-`date '+%m%d%y'`.sql.gz
gzip -c /home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/public_html/*.* >/home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/backups/backup-files-`date '+%m%d%y'`.gz

[DATABASE USERNAME] = The database name for the chan
[DATABASE PASSWORD] = The password to the user for the database. Do note there should *not* be a space between the p and your actual password. If your password was "digimon" it would look like this: -pdigimon
[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME] = The username that the server assigned. This is usually 5 or 6 characters long and is prepended to the database name and username. If you dont know it just type "cd /home/" and then look for a directory that doesnt start with a period and is not: "APACHE_ARCHIVES", "cpeasyapache", "cprestore", "lost+found", "munin". It should be colored blue.

Once you filled out those inputs copy the first to your clipboard (ctrl+c or right click -> copy). Then back in putty/command prompt looking window and type this:
cd backups
You should now be in the backups directory (it should say root@something [/home/(PAWSRU SITE USERNAME)/backups]#
If so then right click and it should paste the first command. Press enter. If you dont see any errors type this:
ls
You should see a file called "backup-database-05172013.sql.gz"
If that works do the same for the second line. See if it produces a file called "backup-files-05172013.sql.gz"

If they do then type this:
crontab -e

Using the arrow keys on your keyboard go to the very bottom and copy both commands in. Then at the begging of each of them add this (make sure there is a space between the * and the start of the command):
0 3 * * *
It should look like this after:
0 3 * * * mysqldump -u [DATABASE USERNAME] -p[DATABASE PASSWORD] [DATABASE NAME] | gzip > /home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/backups/backup-database-`date '+%m%d%y'`.sql.gz
0 3 * * * gzip -c /home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/public_html/*.* >/home/[PAWSRU SITE USERNAME]/backups/backup-files-`date '+%m%d%y'`.gz

Change the 3 to whatever hour in the day you want to run the backups. 3 is 3am, 15 is 3pm. The 0 is the minute.

Once done do ctrl+x on your keyboard and then press Y
Now backups are being done automatically and put into the /backups/ folder and has a filename with the date of the backup.

You have to remember this is PHP based and I can run PuTTy off of WinSCP I can edit any of the files it's not just meant for uploading and downloading. oh, i didn't realize. can i have an account to get in there and handle it or do i have to have you between me and the keyboard again? i'm not really interested in spending the time if i have to walk someone through every step and then sit around and wait for people to respond to my emails/IM when the site gets attacked and I need to take action.

Send me an email so I can send you info and get this train going, usually if I have my phone I am pretty quick to reply to emails. Otherwise this will have to do for now.

So, it's time to remove stickies then?
>> No. 4728 ID: c49191
yes, soon. i just need a bit more time to fiddle with my local test server. i'm trying to duplicate paws' server environment and restore a backup locally to prove 100% that everything is safe. once that's done the site can return to normal. i should have time to do it soon, maybe in a couple of days maybe the weekend depending on how things go at work.

Only if you dont know linux. Saying something is shit when you hardly even know it is highly short-sighted.

Foxcroft,

Please remove thread 2220 under requests. As the artist I didn't give permission for those pictures to be distributed.
