If you can understand what is said, the symbols within the word have done their job. No need to be a dick, pal.

Often while this statement can be true in the short term it doesn't pay off in the long run.

If your writing is continuously filled with spelling and grammatical errors eventually you'll attempt to convey a more complex thought and be completely unable to do so correctly. Either due to far too many errors or your friends and readers just assuming you've made them. We have standards for spelling and grammar for a reason, no one is asking you to be an expert, just have the basic level of competence.

Furthermore studies have indicated that the language you use (i.e. vocabulary et. al.) help you better understand the world around. Not just describe the world but actually comprehend it. So you may be doing yourself a grave disservice by dropping even prepositions from your sentence in favor of numbers.

This is true, but it certainly has a lot to do with how capable you are linguistically in the first place. Due to the far-reaching nature of the internet, it has made slang and shorthand far more widely understandable, and although I am capable of forming complete sentences, I find the use and interaction of those elements fascinating, and use them often myself. While I shudder to think that some people have grown up with the internet to the point that they prefer truncated words and poor spelling, I believe that most of the time, it is because the post does not require more effort than baseline, rather than a mental lack on the part of the poster.

I mean, for seriously, how important are grammar and spelling on a site for deranged perverts when you're asking for the animated version of a shock-website's .gif?
