BS. When you are commissioning an artist, you're paying for his/her time. You will not get away with $100 for a two weeks worth of work, for example. Not even from a bad artist (unless said artist doesn't have to pay bills).

(This picture in particular looks like no more than 4hr work total, though. And not particulary good.)

Furry clients themselves are to blame for their complete lack of taste. There are plenty of good artists around, yet popular ones are commissioned instead, because more_views > art_quality in this fandom. Furry "mainstream" never was and will never be about art, it's about exposure. That's why retarded prices like $10 for a commission prevail - neither the client nor the artist actually care about the quality of the outcome.

If you're drawing traditionally it can end up taking a while if you mess up since you don't have a magical undo button in RL. But you don't see many artists drawing traditionally nowadays unless they're literally professional artists. Which ACTUAL professional artists in the fandom...Yeah maybe 1 or 2. But the majority? Too many misconceptions with this post =) One is to assume someone is poor or don't have the money because they won't spend outrageous amounts of money for something overpriced because of "name". Imo, a lot people don't know how to spend money wisely. Why spend $100 on a product because of the "name" when you can get the exact same product for $40? (As mentioned in the post right after yours) Take bottled water for instance. Waste of money. Just take tap water, put it in the refrigerator, and it tastes the same as bottled water (unless you live in like Mexico). I seen a lot of articles that show there is almost no difference between tap and bottled. Another good example are online games. I seen games where you can change the color of your name for money. That's right, for nothing else, you get a different colored name for like $20-30. That's just a waste of money and plain retarded, even if you're rich.

There's no "exact same product" from a different source when it comes to art. Unless all the artists in question are equally bad, derivative of each other, and don't have a unique approach of their own (yes, it happens far too often). Or if the commissioner doesn't care about quality (this also happens far too often). Generally, people will commission their favorite artists, not the ones with the lowest rates.

It just happens so that popular artists have better visibility, they have a bigger "fanbase" which translates to a bigger demand, to control the demand they rise the price. It's not the quality that allows them to charge more and get away with it, it's the quantity of commissioners.
