I came to gather medicinal plants that my master thinks could be useful. Would you happen to know where I can find a guide to help me find them?” Leo was bemused by this creature’s forthright attitude. “Well, what time of day is it and when does the mission start?” Zak asked. Leo realizes that it was getting late and his guild mates might start worrying about him. “It’s late and the mission is tomorrow. I need to introduce you to the guild master so that you can be temporarily inducted into the guild.” Zack motions Leo to lead the way. Leo heads off at a brisk pace and Zak is forced to trot to keep up. “Why do I need to be inducted into the guild? It should not matter if I am a guild member or not.” Leo responds “Being a part of a guild gives you protection in combat and prevents you from being killed on the field.”

If I end up having spare time, I’d like to research the mechanisms that allow that.” The two soon stop outside of a building. “Boss!” Leo called out. “I have a new mage for tomorrow’s mission.” A human female walked up. “I’ve decided that… What on Ivalice is THAT!?” She was staring at the kobold. Zak gives a small flourish and a bow. “Greetings, guild master. I am Zack, visiting Ivalice to gather potential medicinal herbs for my master to study. I hear you are in need of a competent magic user.”
The guild master was dumbfounded for a split second, but then got down to business. “I do not hire just any random traveling mages to serve the guild. What makes you think I’d hire a little freak like you?” Zak’s marking suddenly shifted to the orange that Leo had seen before. Zak’s grip on his staff tightened as he spoke. “Little freak, am I. I came to this world to accomplish a task for my master. I needed a guide and was led to believe that I could pay you back with my expertise. I will not be insulted by a brute.”
Now the guild leader flushed. “Brute? Hah! This coming from a shrimp of a bangaa. What, were you born deformed and have to lie to make yourself feel normal? His markings returned to their green state and he let out a sigh. “I apologize. I will take my leave as I am not needed here.”
The kobold turned to leave, but the guild master had other plans. “Wait. I apologize for my rudeness. You said you needed a guide? I believe we can work something out.” The kobold had paused halfway in his turn. “Oh? I thought that, how did you put this; I was a lying shrimp of a bangaa? Whatever a bangaa is anyway.” The guild master flinched. “Okay, I admit that I was harsh. Not every day that someone comes in understating their skills. So, you help us, we help you. Will that work?”
The kobold smiled, which sent shivers down the guild master’s spine. “I believe we have an accord. Leo mentioned I would have to temporarily become part of the guild. What does this involve?” The guild master shot a glare at Leo. “Yes, that. You must swear an oath to the Judge.” Zak cocked his head. “Can that be done here or is there a special place that this must occur?” “Here will work” the guild master replied.
After taking the oath, Zak settled down to work out details with the guild master about tomorrow’s mission and his herb hunting. After ironing out the details, Zak is shown to a guest room. The guild master called for Leo. “Leo, where the hell did you find that monster? That moogle was terrified as soon as he entered the room.” Leo was shocked by the hint of fear in the guild master’s voice.
“I found him in a bush beside the path on the way back to the guild. The guild master was stunned, but was not one to waste an opportunity. “ATTACK!”
