The vivarium no longer had a female alligator, so when the other two gators felt the urge, they would breed him like one, chasing him away when they were done. That day was no different, as Ash was slumbering in the less comfortable portion of the enclosure, unable to get scraps at the food dispenser, feeling very low. But this is exactly where young Bernard found him, out of breath after frantically running away from a pair of human children in the zoo.
Chester warned his little brother not to go in the reptiles' enclosure, but Bennie doesn't have much of a sense of direction. Fortunately, this alligator did not make any attempt to eat, hurt, or grab him. Ash looked with curiosity at this little critter come to make his life a little less dull, then as the Racoon climbed on his head, the gator slid into the pond, offering the rodent a little aquatic trip.
Bernard, usually always looking for something in return, found that Ash could give him nothing except friendship, and the two young males found just each other's company to be more precious than any reward. The first of the many days they met, Ash taught Bernard how to swim, gently lowering him down in the water and raising him up when the Racoon was in over his head. Perhaps there was an Otter somewhere in his genealogical tree, because Bernard took to it very well.
And because Bennie had spent an entire winter with a family of male wolves who liked to keep him warm on both ends, he knows how to hold his breath for a long time if there's something nice in his throat.
