It's not that she was a brat, it's that she was a little girl, I supposed. Her lower lip trembled as Sherry's smiling face came down to the 6 year-old's level.\n \"But, sweetie, it's just some boring old boats, remember? We saw them earlier today.\" Sherry said, her girly sweet talk backed by a strong early-30's woman voice seeming to somewhat comfort little Missy.\n \"But, but-\"\n \"Don't talk so much about butts!\" Sherry laughed. I giggled, too.\n My name is Taylor McIntosh and I was 12 when we had this McIntosh Family Reunion in Australia, because where else would we have had it, right? Beside me was my twin sister, Isabelle, but we all call her Izzy. Next to Izzy was Emiline, our cousin from the U.K. She was about 11. And across from me was David, my 14 year old cousin and Missy's older brother. Oh, and I'm known as Tay, which is a badass name, by the way. It goes with my accent. We were in the front room of our grandparent's house in Sydney, which was an old house in an old area of town, but it had a warm and fuzzy familiarity to it that happened to smell like vitamins and old wooden furniture. I looked down again and Missy seemed annoyed as she prepared for a yawn.\n \"Aunt Sher-reeeeahh!\" Missy cried, rubbing her eye. She was obviously tired. Sherry reached out and hugged the little girl.\n \"Oh, sweetheart, I'm sorry.\" Sherry started. \"You look so tired anyway. Haven't you seen all your yawns?\" Missy rubbed her eye then looked confused at her aunt.\n \"My yawns?\"\n \"Yep!\"\n \"See them?\" During this exchange, I noticed how Buddy had already checked out in a chair in the corner, looking peaceful. Little kids were so easy to get to sleep.\n \"Yeah, you're putting them all over the floor,\" Sherry leaned in to whisper, but we could still hear her, \"but i don't think grampa or gramma would appreciate yawns all over their carpet.\" I thought it was funny, Izzy giggled a little, too, so, heh, it must have been at least a little funny. Missy smiled some, followed by another yawn. Sherry picked her up and smiled. \"Now look, we got alllllll week to do stuff together!\"\n \"That's... yaaahhh.... that's silly, Aunt Sherry... you can't... you can't see yawns...\" Missy was barely keeping her eyes open. Her mother, Aunt Lynette, came into the room, gently taking her daughter from Sherry's arms. Was she asleep already? Wow.\n \"maybe you should go already while she's, you know...\" Lynette whispered, smiling while motioning at the already sleeping little one in her arms. Sherry gave her a wink and a thumbs up and we made it through the front door of the house.\n Outside, we felt the comforting fresh air hit our faces. I looked ahead and at the street we were about to head down. It was a quaint little neighborhood just a few blocks from the shore, or at least the bay or the port area thing... something like that. The place with the boats, yeah.\n \"Everyone just keep close, okay?\" Sherry said as we hit the sidewalk. Sherry was our 'cool aunt,' you know, that aunt who always took the kids places when we were together, maybe out to ice cream, or bowling, or even go kart racing (that was super fun!) She always seemed to prefer being with us older kids than the whiny little ones. I tried to not think of Missy and Buddy as brats, cus really they weren't, but ditching the little ones to have some fun times with Aunt Sherry was always one of the best parts of any family get-togethers. No wonder Missy wanted to be with her all the time. She was almost the 'older kid' of our little groups whenever we saw her. She was a bit shorter than Mum so she almost was like another kid, but I was quickly catching up to her height. Soon I'd be towering over her. But for now, I was shorter.\n It was December, and in Australia that meant it was dead in the middle of the hot season, but being near the shore made it not so bad. There was always a cool sea breeze blowing, it seemed. Despite the heat, Grampa's house was always comfy. Not cold, not hot, just... very comfy. I never remembered sweating or shivering there, so I guess they were doing something right.\n The walk from the house to the edge of the water took maybe 5 minutes. There was barely any traffic in this area, and especially this time of day, just when the sun was going down, leaving purples and reds across the sky. Lights from boats and piers began popping up all around, reflected in the waters. We approached the railing, looking out across the water and down at the lapping waves hit the wall.\n \"Say, who's up for ice cream?\" Sherry said, causing all us kids to shout a 'I am!' in unison. Sherry leading the way, we walked down beside the railing toward the pier where there were lots of shops and restaurants and a theatre, I think. We walked into a place that I think was unique to that one place. The sign said 'Victor Rause Ice Cream' and we'd been here before on other visits to grandma and grandpa.\n Inside, it was a lot colder than the house. It smelled wonderful, too. On display were lots of ice cream flavors and Sherry said the sky was the limit. I asked for every one of their flavors on a cone with all of their toppings. When Sherry laughed nervously, and Izzy gave me a stern look, I decided to scale it back a little. We all met up at a round table with stools. I stepped up and into my stool and found it had a round bar underneath, so naturally my feet went right to it. \n \"Mmm this ice cream is so yummy!\" Izzy said, licking her lips before taking more licks. \"I wonder if they would have this place in America.\" \n \"I don't know. I think this is the only 'Victor Rause Ice Cream' in the world.\" Sherry said, licking up her spoon as she got a large cup. For some reason, I felt something change in me at that moment. Aunt Sherry was such a cool aunt indeed. She was suddenly pretty. Heh, I remembered having a huge crush on her when I was a tiny kid, like maybe Missy's age. But Sherry was always nice to all of us, so of course I'd fall for her. But right at the moment she licked that spoon, I felt something inside me twitch. I don't think I reacted in a way anyone could have noticed. I continued eating my ice cream while occasionally catching glimpses of Sherry smiling, laughing or, gulp, licking.\n \"That's a bummer.\" Izzy said.\n \"Huge bummer.\" Emiline spoke up. \"Y'know, there's this place back home that's got a castle theme and roller coasters that go through the parlor. It's crazy!\" Izzy giggled right alongside her cousin.\n \"What's it called?\" Sherry asked.\n \"'Crazy Castle Ice Cream.' Quite a boring name, if you ask me.\" Emiline said, finishing with a lick. I know I was listening to this conversation, but my mind kept thinking about Aunt Sherry. She was pretty, wasn't she?\n \"I see the English aren't any better at naming their businesses than Australians.\" She said, at one point looking right at me when she scanned her audience. I may have blushed!\n \"Well, at least Victor Rause has his name on his business.\" David said, speaking up finally.\n \"True, true.\" Sherry said.\n \"It is a bit of a shame that Missy and Buddy couldn't have come with us.\" Izzy said sounding a little down.\n \"Nah, they'd just be annoying.\" David said. Emiline shot him a dirty look.\n \"They love ice cream, too, y'know.\" she said.\n \"Yeah, sometimes you're annoying, David.\" Izzy said, giggling. David smirked.\n \"Yeah, but I don't exactly need to be watched all the time.\" he said proudly. Sherry nudged him with her elbow.\n \"Then why d'ya need an old woman like me ta look after ya?\" she said, causing laughs around the table. David sunk in his seat mumbling something. He and his younger siblings were born and raised in America, but since their dad was Australian, they all had a little bit of the Aussie accent, which came out at times like these.\n \"You're not old, Aunt Sherry!\" Emiline said. \n \"No, you're our youngest aunt!\" Izzy said. Sherry smiled and ran a paw past a stray hair in her face.\n \"Why thank you, girls.\" She said, turning to us boys. \"How 'bout you two? What do you think? Am I old?\" David and I most likely blushed and looked at each other then at her.\n \"N-no... you're...\" David stammered.\n \"You're like a, uh... younger mom!\" I exclaimed. The girls giggled and Sherry put her paws on her hips, giving us a dirty look. What did I say?\n \"Tay, moms are still old, older than us at least.\" Emiline said.\n \"Well, all moms are older than kids.\" Izzy said, turned slightly to her cousin. Sherry laughed.\n \"Am I too old for fun, boys?\" Sherry said, watching us sink further into embarrassment. She threw her paw around David's shoulders and hugged him. \"Nah, don't worry; I take being considered an adult a compliment actually.\" Sherry said, eating the last of her ice cream as she nodded. \"So, what should we do next?\" she asked us. I felt immediately I had an answer. THE answer.\n \"Skeet shooting.\" I said. The stares and giggles happened right away.\n \"Uh, no, I don't think anyone around here even does that, Tay.\" Sherry laughed. I felt the blush happen again, but stronger. At least I said something dumb to cover for it.\n \"No, Tay, I think we should ride that ferry that goes out into the bay!\" Izzy said, excited. Emiline 'mmm'd in agreement.\n \"Yeah! We couldn't go earlier because Missy was scared of it.\" she said.\n \"Right!\" Izzy said, finishing her ice cream.\n \"Okay then! That sounds like fun!\" Sherry said. I looked at David, who shared my look.\n \"No, no, no.\" I said, crossing my arms awkwardly.\n \"What? Why?\" Sherry asked.\n \"Eh, sounds boring.\" David said, still eating. If David and I were together, we tended to buddy-up and a lot of times we agreed on things. He was older, but we still got along very well. Just the same, Izzy and Emiline were always a pair, doing the same girly things in the same girly ways.\n \"It's not boring!\" Izzy said.\n \"YOU'RE boring!\" Emiline said, huge smile. The girls giggled. I was annoyed, as usual, at the girls' immaturity. I certainly didn't want to look stupid in front of cool Aunt Sherry.\n \"You're the boring ones!\" David said, making me think of what I would say.\n \"Okay, now, kids.\" Sherry said, interrupting my chance, but that was fine. \"C'mon, let's have a vote. Who wants to go ride the ferry?\" The girls shot their thin arms up alongside Sherry's. \"Okay, who doesn't want to ride the ferry?\" My arm was up before I realized David's was up alongside it. Sherry shrugged. \"Looks like ya lose, boys.\" The girls giggled as David and I groaned in disappointment.\n \"I don’t like no stinkin' ocean!\" I said, almost standing. Was I serious? It didn't feel too serious. Anything Sherry did with us was cool. Always.\n \"C'mon, Tay. Maybe we'll see some dolphins!\" Izzy said.\n \"Feh, dolphins are dumb.\" David said. I laughed.\n \"They sure are!\" I said, chuckling. The girls looked at us with distain. Sherry held her paws out to us across the table.\n \"You boys just don't understand how to relax and take in beauty, huh?\" When she smiled at me, it was like I began to understand. Her big blue eyes stood out from the rest of her face which was framed by over-shoulder-length brown hair which she had up in a ponytail. \"C'mon, it'll be fun! I promise!\" David and I looked at each other. I was now ready to ride anything, but David seemed still reserved. Still, I reflected on what Aunt Sherry said. She 'promised.' It was something she said a lot, maybe due to her wanting us stubborn boys to do fun things and we were being butts about it.\n We left the ice cream parlor and made our way down the wharf. By now, the night had taken hold and though there was still a little bit of daylight at the far end of the sky, the darkness was lit up by all the lights of boats and piers and things. The line for the ferry wasn't very long; we waited on the yellow-painted striped area for the ferryman to usher us onto the boat. I saw a sign saying 'Manly Ferries.'\n \"Say, it says 'Manly Ferries.'\" I said, nudging David. He laughed.\n \"Heh, there's nothing manly about ferries!\" he said.\n \"Manly is a part of Sydney. So, these are Manly Ferries, get it?\" Sherry said. David and I shared a look.\n \"That's dumb.\" he said. Sherry laughed.\n \"Everything's dumb at your age, huh?\" she said sweetly.\n When we finally got on, we all followed Sherry into a doorway which had a sign about ferry rates. Was Aunt Sherry gonna buy tickets for all of us kids? She shouldn't have to! I didn't want to ride the ferry in the first place!\n \"Don't worry about the price, kids.\" Sherry said, beating me to the punch on my question.\n \"Aunt Sherry, you're not gonna buy tickets for all of us, are you?\" Izzy said. We came to an OpalCard tapping station. Sherry looked at me and pulled out her wallet.\n \"Yeah, you already bought us ice cream.\" Emiline said. Sherry looked at the girls with a confused, but amused look.\n \"You sure are weird kids. Here I am spending money on you and you're worrying about what I'm spending. Haha, that's weird.\" she said pulling out her OpalCard. \"You gotta be the most unspoiled kids ever.\"\n \"Well, we don't wanna be barges.\" I said. I got some looks.\n \"'Barges,' Tay?\" Sherry asked. What was the word I wanted to say then?\n \"This ferry is a sort of barge, huh?\" David said. Sherry laughed.\n \"You mean 'burdens,' Tay?\" Sherry asked. I nodded. \"Nah, it's fine. During this holiday season, there's an evening discount. All five of us comes out to around... $20.\" Sherry said, smiling and tapping her card. I wondered how much that was in US dollars. \"That's about, ahhh..... $14-15 US dollars.\" I froze as we headed into the next room. Was she reading my mind?!\n Inside, I could hear people talking and there was a general hum of the motor, or something, all around us. Lots of yellow and tan colours. The seats were blue in some areas, green in others. I could smell a weird mix of engine oil and food. A sign pointed at the central staircase saying CAFE. Food? As we walked further into the boat, the oil smell went away and was replaced by just the food. Just as this happened, we rounded a corner and there was a central staircase and a small cafe selling food items and drinks.\n \"Wow, you can buy food here?\" I said, maybe a little too excitedly. Sherry laughed.\n \"Yup, it's a cafe. Smells better in here than out with the smell of engine oil, huh?\" she said, taking me by surprise. She was pretty AND a mind-reader! \n We went up the central stairs. Izzy was ahead of me, so I whispered up to her.\n \"izzy...\"\n \"yeah?\" She was whispering, too.\n \"i think aunt sherry can read minds.\" I said. Izzy turned slightly to me.\n \"what?\"\n \"yeah, she keeps answering questions before i've asked them!\"\n \"tay, that's silly.\" Izzy said as we reached the upper floor landing. There was a sign that said:\n\n IF YOU SEE SOMETHING,\n SAY SOMETHING.\n\n I was trying! I was trying to say something!\n \"izzy, i'm serious! she could be a witch! she's gonna put a spell over me!\"\n \"uh huh.\" Izzy said. We followed Sherry to the outside area where the night met our eyes again. We were at the back of the boat. Tiny lights and the nice cool evening air. It wasn't so hot anymore, which was a relief. Sherry went forward to lean on the railing and look out across the harbour, so us kids did the same around her. We could see the Sydney Harbour Bridge being lit up in colours that seemed to rotate from green to blue to purple and so forth. It looked kinda like a large whale holding two golden bricks beside it. Beyond and almost under it, I could see weird shapes moving among the lights that didn't make much sense to me. They seemed to shrink and expand and judging by the distance, they were really big! What was I looking at?\n \"Aunt Sherry.\" I asked.\n \"Yeah, Tay?\" she answered, not looking away.\n \"Whassat stuff out there? It's like weird shapes changing shape.\" I said, pointing toward the odd things.\n \"I can't see what you're...\" Sherry started, moving between David and I. \"Where?\" she said gently, lowering her head right next to mine. The smell of the sea harbour air mixed with Aunt Sherry's comforting warm scent filled my nose and I was surely blushing. Her warm fur touching mine wasn't nerve-wracking; it was just lovely. She didn't smell like Mum at all, but she didn't smell like a girl either. She had her own essence I guess. I continued to point at the weird shapes. \"Ahh,\" Sherry said, standing up, \"that's the Sydney Opera House. They light it up and project animations on it at night.\" I looked again, squinting. Wow, such an Australian icon, right there. I didn't know they did that! I felt a swell of Aussie pride in my chest.\n Soon, the ferry's motor vibrated and we were moving out into the harbour. To the side of us, white water indicated where the motor was. We were looking off the left side of the ferry. The wind blew gently at first, but a few gusts made their way across us. My arm was warm and I looked to see Sherry hadn't moved since she came over to explain the 'weird shapes' to me. \n \"Ahhh... isn't this so nice, kids?\" Sherry exhaled, smiling warmly with her eyes closed, wind blowing her hair around. Some of it landed in my face and I happened to catch a quick whiff before it was whipped away. I looked up at her; she opened her eyes and watched the evening sights slowly pass by. She looked kinda lonely, too. Even though she was with us four kids, she had a look of longing, as she did the past day.\n Our first night we spent the night at Sherry and Roland's house and they didn't seem to be getting along as well as I thought a married couple should. They certainly weren't as close as my Mom and Dad were; they seemed to be forever in love all the time, day or night. No, Sherry and Roland seemed like they barely knew each other. Even at Grampa's house, Uncle Roland was off in the backyard talking with Dad and Geoffrey the whole time. Even a few times, Dad had come checked in on Mom and even kissed her and everything. Why was that? I saw Izzy's hair blow past Sherry's back and I could hear her talking endlessly with Emiline. Maybe she knew what was up.",

I stepped up and into my stool and found it had a round bar underneath, so naturally my feet went right to it. <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Mmm this ice cream is so yummy!&quot; Izzy said, licking her lips before taking more licks. &quot;I wonder if they would have this place in America.&quot; <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;I don&#039;t know. I think this is the only &#039;Victor Rause Ice Cream&#039; in the world.&quot; Sherry said, licking up her spoon as she got a large cup. For some reason, I felt something change in me at that moment. Aunt Sherry was such a cool aunt indeed. She was suddenly pretty. Heh, I remembered having a huge crush on her when I was a tiny kid, like maybe Missy&#039;s age. But Sherry was always nice to all of us, so of course I&#039;d fall for her. But right at the moment she licked that spoon, I felt something inside me twitch. I don&#039;t think I reacted in a way anyone could have noticed. I continued eating my ice cream while occasionally catching glimpses of Sherry smiling, laughing or, gulp, licking.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;That&#039;s a bummer.&quot; Izzy said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Huge bummer.&quot; Emiline spoke up. &quot;Y&#039;know, there&#039;s this place back home that&#039;s got a castle theme and roller coasters that go through the parlor. It&#039;s crazy!&quot; Izzy giggled right alongside her cousin.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;What&#039;s it called?&quot; Sherry asked.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;&#039;Crazy Castle Ice Cream.&#039; Quite a boring name, if you ask me.&quot; Emiline said, finishing with a lick. I know I was listening to this conversation, but my mind kept thinking about Aunt Sherry. She was pretty, wasn&#039;t she?<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;I see the English aren&#039;t any better at naming their businesses than Australians.&quot; She said, at one point looking right at me when she scanned her audience. I may have blushed!<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Well, at least Victor Rause has his name on his business.&quot; David said, speaking up finally.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;True, true.&quot; Sherry said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;It is a bit of a shame that Missy and Buddy couldn&#039;t have come with us.&quot; Izzy said sounding a little down.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Nah, they&#039;d just be annoying.&quot; David said. Emiline shot him a dirty look.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;They love ice cream, too, y&#039;know.&quot; she said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yeah, sometimes you&#039;re annoying, David.&quot; Izzy said, giggling. David smirked.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yeah, but I don&#039;t exactly need to be watched all the time.&quot; he said proudly. Sherry nudged him with her elbow.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Then why d&#039;ya need an old woman like me ta look after ya?&quot; she said, causing laughs around the table. David sunk in his seat mumbling something. He and his younger siblings were born and raised in America, but since their dad was Australian, they all had a little bit of the Aussie accent, which came out at times like these.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You&#039;re not old, Aunt Sherry!&quot; Emiline said. <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;No, you&#039;re our youngest aunt!&quot; Izzy said. Sherry smiled and ran a paw past a stray hair in her face.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Why thank you, girls.&quot; She said, turning to us boys. &quot; How &#039;bout you two? What do you think? Am I old?&quot; David and I most likely blushed and looked at each other then at her.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;N-no... you&#039;re...&quot; David stammered.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You&#039;re like a, uh... younger mom!&quot; I exclaimed. The girls giggled and Sherry put her paws on her hips, giving us a dirty look. What did I say?<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Tay, moms are still old, older than us at least.&quot; Emiline said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Well, all moms are older than kids.&quot; Izzy said, turned slightly to her cousin. Sherry laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Am I too old for fun, boys?&quot; Sherry said, watching us sink further into embarrassment. She threw her paw around David&#039;s shoulders and hugged him. &quot;Nah, don&#039;t worry; I take being considered an adult a compliment actually.&quot; Sherry said, eating the last of her ice cream as she nodded. &quot; So, what should we do next?&quot; she asked us. I felt immediately I had an answer. THE answer.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Skeet shooting.&quot; I said. The stares and giggles happened right away.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Uh, no, I don&#039;t think anyone around here even does that, Tay.&quot; Sherry laughed. I felt the blush happen again, but stronger. At least I said something dumb to cover for it.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;No, Tay, I think we should ride that ferry that goes out into the bay!&quot; Izzy said, excited. Emiline &#039;mmm&#039;d in agreement.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yeah! We couldn&#039;t go earlier because Missy was scared of it.&quot; she said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Right!&quot; Izzy said, finishing her ice cream.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Okay then! That sounds like fun!&quot; Sherry said. I looked at David, who shared my look.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;No, no, no.&quot; I said, crossing my arms awkwardly.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;What? Why?&quot; Sherry asked.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Eh, sounds boring.&quot; David said, still eating. If David and I were together, we tended to buddy-up and a lot of times we agreed on things. He was older, but we still got along very well. Just the same, Izzy and Emiline were always a pair, doing the same girly things in the same girly ways.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;It&#039;s not boring!&quot; Izzy said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;YOU&#039;RE boring!&quot; Emiline said, huge smile. The girls giggled. I was annoyed, as usual, at the girls&#039; immaturity. I certainly didn&#039;t want to look stupid in front of cool Aunt Sherry.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You&#039;re the boring ones!&quot; David said, making me think of what I would say.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Okay, now, kids.&quot; Sherry said, interrupting my chance, but that was fine. &quot;C&#039;mon, let&#039;s have a vote. Who wants to go ride the ferry?&quot; The girls shot their thin arms up alongside Sherry&#039;s. &quot;Okay, who doesn&#039;t want to ride the ferry?&quot; My arm was up before I realized David&#039;s was up alongside it. Sherry shrugged. &quot;Looks like ya lose, boys.&quot; The girls giggled as David and I groaned in disappointment.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;I don&rsquo;t like no stinkin&#039; ocean!&quot; I said, almost standing. Was I serious? It didn&#039;t feel too serious. Anything Sherry did with us was cool. Always.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;C&#039;mon, Tay. Maybe we&#039;ll see some dolphins!&quot; Izzy said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Feh, dolphins are dumb.&quot; David said. I laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;They sure are!&quot; I said, chuckling. The girls looked at us with distain. Sherry held her paws out to us across the table.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You boys just don&#039;t understand how to relax and take in beauty, huh?&quot; When she smiled at me, it was like I began to understand. Her big blue eyes stood out from the rest of her face which was framed by over-shoulder-length brown hair which she had up in a ponytail. &quot;C&#039;mon, it&#039;ll be fun! I promise!&quot; David and I looked at each other. I was now ready to ride anything, but David seemed still reserved. Still, I reflected on what Aunt Sherry said. She &#039;promised.&#039; It was something she said a lot, maybe due to her wanting us stubborn boys to do fun things and we were being butts about it.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We left the ice cream parlor and made our way down the wharf. By now, the night had taken hold and though there was still a little bit of daylight at the far end of the sky, the darkness was lit up by all the lights of boats and piers and things. The line for the ferry wasn&#039;t very long; we waited on the yellow-painted striped area for the ferryman to usher us onto the boat. I saw a sign saying &#039;Manly Ferries.&#039;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Say, it says &#039;Manly Ferries.&#039;&quot; I said, nudging David. He laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Heh, there&#039;s nothing manly about ferries!&quot; he said.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Manly is a part of Sydney. So, these are Manly Ferries, get it?&quot; Sherry said. David and I shared a look.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;That&#039;s dumb.&quot; he said. Sherry laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Everything&#039;s dumb at your age, huh?&quot; she said sweetly.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;When we finally got on, we all followed Sherry into a doorway which had a sign about ferry rates. Was Aunt Sherry gonna buy tickets for all of us kids? She shouldn&#039;t have to! I didn&#039;t want to ride the ferry in the first place!<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Don&#039;t worry about the price, kids.&quot; Sherry said, beating me to the punch on my question.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Aunt Sherry, you&#039;re not gonna buy tickets for all of us, are you?&quot; Izzy said. We came to an OpalCard tapping station. Sherry looked at me and pulled out her wallet.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yeah, you already bought us ice cream.&quot; Emiline said. Sherry looked at the girls with a confused, but amused look.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You sure are weird kids. Here I am spending money on you and you&#039;re worrying about what I&#039;m spending. Haha, that&#039;s weird.&quot; she said pulling out her OpalCard. &quot; You gotta be the most unspoiled kids ever.&quot;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Well, we don&#039;t wanna be barges.&quot; I said. I got some looks.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;&#039;Barges,&#039; Tay?&quot; Sherry asked. What was the word I wanted to say then?<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;This ferry is a sort of barge, huh?&quot; David said. Sherry laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;You mean &#039;burdens,&#039; Tay?&quot; Sherry asked. I nodded. &quot;Nah, it&#039;s fine. During this holiday season, there&#039;s an evening discount. All five of us comes out to around... $20.&quot; Sherry said, smiling and tapping her card. I wondered how much that was in US dollars. &quot;That&#039;s about, ahhh..... $14-15 US dollars.&quot; I froze as we headed into the next room. Was she reading my mind?!<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Inside, I could hear people talking and there was a general hum of the motor, or something, all around us. Lots of yellow and tan colours. The seats were blue in some areas, green in others. I could smell a weird mix of engine oil and food. A sign pointed at the central staircase saying CAFE. Food? As we walked further into the boat, the oil smell went away and was replaced by just the food. Just as this happened, we rounded a corner and there was a central staircase and a small cafe selling food items and drinks.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Wow, you can buy food here?&quot; I said, maybe a little too excitedly. Sherry laughed.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yup, it&#039;s a cafe. Smells better in here than out with the smell of engine oil, huh?&quot; she said, taking me by surprise. She was pretty AND a mind-reader! <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We went up the central stairs. Izzy was ahead of me, so I whispered up to her.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;izzy...&quot;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;yeah?&quot; She was whispering, too.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;i think aunt sherry can read minds.&quot; I said. Izzy turned slightly to me.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;what?&quot;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;yeah, she keeps answering questions before i&#039;ve asked them!&quot;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;tay, that&#039;s silly.&quot; Izzy said as we reached the upper floor landing. There was a sign that said:<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;IF YOU SEE SOMETHING,<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;SAY SOMETHING.<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I was trying! I was trying to say something!<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;izzy, i&#039;m serious! she could be a witch! she&#039;s gonna put a spell over me!&quot;<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;uh huh.&quot; Izzy said. We followed Sherry to the outside area where the night met our eyes again. We were at the back of the boat. Tiny lights and the nice cool evening air. It wasn&#039;t so hot anymore, which was a relief. Beyond and almost under it, I could see weird shapes moving among the lights that didn&#039;t make much sense to me. They seemed to shrink and expand and judging by the distance, they were really big! What was I looking at?<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Aunt Sherry.&quot; I asked.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Yeah, Tay?&quot; she answered, not looking away.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Whassat stuff out there? It&#039;s like weird shapes changing shape.&quot; I said, pointing toward the odd things.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;I can&#039;t see what you&#039;re...&quot; Sherry started, moving between David and I. &quot;Where?&quot; she said gently, lowering her head right next to mine. The smell of the sea harbour air mixed with Aunt Sherry&#039;s comforting warm scent filled my nose and I was surely blushing. Her warm fur touching mine wasn&#039;t nerve-wracking; it was just lovely. She didn&#039;t smell like Mum at all, but she didn&#039;t smell like a girl either. She had her own essence I guess. I continued to point at the weird shapes. &quot;Ahh,&quot; Sherry said, standing up, &quot;that&#039;s the Sydney Opera House. They light it up and project animations on it at night.&quot; I looked again, squinting. Wow, such an Australian icon, right there. I didn&#039;t know they did that! I felt a swell of Aussie pride in my chest.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Soon, the ferry&#039;s motor vibrated and we were moving out into the harbour. To the side of us, white water indicated where the motor was. We were looking off the left side of the ferry. The wind blew gently at first, but a few gusts made their way across us. My arm was warm and I looked to see Sherry hadn&#039;t moved since she came over to explain the &#039;weird shapes&#039; to me. <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot;Ahhh... isn&#039;t this so nice, kids?&quot; Sherry exhaled, smiling warmly with her eyes closed, wind blowing her hair around. Some of it landed in my face and I happened to catch a quick whiff before it was whipped away. I looked up at her; she opened her eyes and watched the evening sights slowly pass by. She looked kinda lonely, too. Even though she was with us four kids, she had a look of longing, as she did the past day.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our first night we spent the night at Sherry and Roland&#039;s house and they didn&#039;t seem to be getting along as well as I thought a married couple should. They certainly weren&#039;t as close as my Mom and Dad were; they seemed to be forever in love all the time, day or night. No, Sherry and Roland seemed like they barely knew each other. Even at Grampa&#039;s house, Uncle Roland was off in the backyard talking with Dad and Geoffrey the whole time. Even a few times, Dad had come checked in on Mom and even kissed her and everything. Why was that? I saw Izzy&#039;s hair blow past Sherry&#039;s back and I could hear her talking endlessly with Emiline. Maybe she knew what was up.</span>",
