"Well hello Katie." A voice came from behind me. Turning around and looking, I noticed a male wolf behind me and turned around, looking over the couch backrest. Through an almost cloud-like mist I noticed it was my brother. "Well, long time no see Josh" I commented back at him as he came up to me. Smiling I stood up and walked over to him, giving him a hug before sitting back down on the couch, and him across the table in another chair. "Surprising to see you here." He said, smiling and leaning back in his plush love seat. "Yeah, I know. It isn't very fun waiting to return is it?" I said, making a joke about both of our situations. Josh caught on and laughed. "Yeah, six weeks, four days and nine hours for me. What about you? How did you end up here?" I looked down, slightly embarrassed which showed through my darker panda colored fur. "Well, it's..." I paused just a second too long trying to think of the right words. By the time I looked back up, my brother was next to me with his arm around my shoulder. "Oh it's OK, Some people here are here for really stupid thing. I was crossing the street and a chicken truck got me. Trucks. It always seems to be trucks with me!" I looked at his expression and knew he was trying to make me laugh. "Oh shush you." I couldn't help but crack a smile as I pushed his face. He was persistent. "Oh come on sis, yours can't be as bad as being called chicken boy for nearly two months. How did you end up here? I'm curious." I looked at him for a moment, still flush with embarrassment of how I had ended up here. "Well, promise not to laugh OK?" He nodded "Tell Ol' chicken man why your here."
"Well Mycah and I were moving from Portsmouth to Glentondale and had just got settled in. It was an international jump, but it was well worth it. The creatures here were a lot more friendly than we had both imagined, although most were of lighter fur mesh than we were, so we had to adapt. Mycah, as you should recall is a White Siberian Bear, and clearly me a slightly hefty panda bear." I continued on as I recalled more of the day, slipping into a semi conscious state and explaining more as if it was happening all over again. "We would always take a walk in the city park and watch the little lovebirds, squirrels, and others scurry about their daily business. I remember on that Thursday a couple of pine martens came up and introduced themselves. They kind of looked like weasels I thought, but they were quite different. They came over and sat on the trail bench across from us and started talking." "Well hey there." The male one waved and smiled at us. His girlfriend or wife sat next to him and crossed her legs. I noticed that he was wearing a blue short sleeved T-shirt and a pair of khaki slacks. She was wearing an orange blouse top and a knee length denim skirt.
"Hey there." Mycah waved politely back. He stood up and met the stranger half way on the path. "Name's Mycah, what's yours?" The Marten stuck out his paw, which was much more slender than my boyfriends. "Names Charles, pleasure to meet you. You two must be new around here?" I watched Mycah reach out and daintily shake Charles’s paw in an effort not to crush this new acquaintance's bones, noticing their paw difference of nearly triple the size. "Yes, we are. Trying to find some new work around here since my old job wasn't cutting it for my girl and I's lifestyle." Charles reached into his pocket after the two exchanged handshakes and pulled out a little metal wallet and opened it up. "Well, it just so happens I own one of the country clubs here. Perhaps we can work something out." I watched Mycah take the card, and noticed his female companion was eying me over slightly. "Thanks, I'll come by and visit you after I talk this over with my gal. Perhaps see you tomorrow?"
"Sure thing. I can get you outfitted when your there. It's pretty easy work, there's just a lot of it to do. Pay starts at $29 an hour, plus benefits. Plus we are set to have our monthly exchange next week." Charles commented as Mycah looked over the card and shook his hand again. "It's OK, I'm not against work at all. And exchange? What kind of an exchange?" "Well, it's more to help keep morale up both among staffers and family lifestyles. For a full 24 hours two people swap their partners. It's quite simple and easy with only two rules: you can't call or visit your partner during the 24 hours, and your trade can decline to be traded if he or she desires." Mycah looked at him with at first an excited look, then a concerned expression came across his face. "Well, I wouldn't want anyone else knocking up my girl. That just wouldn't be good at all." The weasel-like creature nodded his head. "I understand that, this is why your partner can decline. Everyone is in the same boat with that same trust issue, and on a side note away from the official news they know they would be fired from my employment if they did anything dirty like that. It's a huge step in trust, but it does keep the employees honest, surprisingly. Everyone has the highest respect for others mates I assure you. Why not come down tomorrow like you said and you can ask anyone you'd like and they will tell you the same thing."
Mycah still looked a little concerned, but I could tell he was intrigued by the idea. "And it's just for one day right?" Charles nodded. "At the end of the 24 hours we all meet back at the clubhouse and swap back and tell our stories about what happened." Mycah nodded. "OK, I'll see you tomorrow then. I'll still have to talk it over with Katie over there and see if she would even be OK with it." "Of course. My girl, Laura over here is up for trade too." Both Mycah and I waved to her and she smiled and waved back. I watched Mycah come back and stood up, waving to the marten couple as we walked away and to home. I looked at Mycah with a serious expression. "If your going to do this to me, you better make sure it's safe." He looked back and nodded. "Of course hon, I'll go there tomorrow and see if it's on the up and up. If it is, would you be willing to do it with me? Do you trust me enough?" It really wasn't a fair question as he knew I trusted him. "Of course I do sweetie. It's just the others who I want to make sure of."
