"description": "I used to read Sonic Archie comics some time ago, and I've always wondered why they never mentioned anything about ancient mobian hedgehog history and culture etc. They've always talked about ancient echidna civilizations which I've found fascinating, but they've never really told us the origin of the hedgehog. Well here is a little info sheet on the hedgehog, on their biology, history, behavior, etc. Please note that this is MY take on it, or my little head canon idea. Don't take this seriously, just as an idea of mine or whatever. This is my canon, for my own story. \nObviously I used Sonic and Amy as examples, since most hedgehog fan characters are based off of them.\n\nHistory: Like all Mobians, hedgehogs are result of the gene bombs that mutated all life on Mobius, formally known as Earth. Unlike echidnas, hedgehogs didn't start their own civilization. They lived a nomadic life, even a solitary life for some. Hedgehogs didn't have the means to become as advanced as the echidnas because they weren't that social and preferred to roam alone. Hedgehogs typically lived together in small nomadic groups. It wasn't unusual to see a lone young male hedgehog, since they preferred the solitude, while females usually stayed with their small family group until they found a lone hedgehog to mate with. Ancient hedgehogs were omnivorous, and still are to this day. They ate pretty much anything, from mobini insects, amphibians, birds, fruit, vegetables, etc. They were hunter gatherers for much of their history.\nHedgehogs are one of the fastest of the Mobians, the reason why is unknown, but I have theorized that it may be that they've developed this speed to escape from larger Mobian predators, such as wolf packs, large cat tribes, overlanders, and echidna hunters, and perhaps even from each other. It is also possible that male hedgehogs used this speed to fight each other for resources, territory, and females. \nDuring this time, Echidna society had become very sophisticated and they enslaved several Mobian races, including the hedgehog. Echidnas initially believed that hedgehogs, due to their great strength and stamina, would serve them as the ideal laborer, however their behavior was quite unmanageable and were very rebellious and difficult to control. Females were slightly easier to keep because of their calmer nature, and were kept as house servants. Echidnas believed that hedgehogs, like the rest of the Mobians, were inferior and primitive, since they lacked a civilization of their own. However they underestimated them, since were accounts of enslaved hedgehogs outsmarting their masters, playing tricks on them, and solving problems echidnas couldn't find the answers to. One example was of a enslaved female hedgehog, whose wits and intelligence caught the attention of an Echidna scientist, who then decided she might be useful as an aide for his research, and eventually became the first hedgehog scientist. (A story in progress) However hedgehogs were proved to be a nightmare to keep as slaves, they were impossible to tame, and so their enslavement ceased.\nHedgehogs didn't become part of any society until the middle ages came into play, in which by then they joined societies like the Kingdoms of Acorn and Mercia. During this time, one female hedgehog in particular, gained control over the Chaos Emeralds from a curse sannimo.deviantart.com/journal… (it's TL;DR). \nAs a few hundred years go by, life in these kingdoms became unbearable due to having limited freedom, and a revolution ensued, lead by a few hedgehogs. The Kingdom of Acorn was the first to go, their king executed (save for his son), which was replaced by the Republic of Mobius, the first multiracial and democratic Mobian society. A society free of kings, and ruled by the people. This nation experienced great advances in technology, which rivaled that of their neighbors like the Overlanders and Echidnas. War ensued between the Republic of Mobius and the Overlanders due to a miscommunication. Hedgehogs played a huge role during the Great War, one such hedgehog was Charles Needlemouse (Sonic's uncle), who developed advanced weaponry and technology for the war effort. The Mobians won, but had to defend themselves from a new threat--Dr. Robotnik, who wished to rule all of Mobius. A new hero emerged, Sonic the Hedgehog, who with his super sonic speed (speed which no hedgehog before him has acquired) and ability to harness all seven chaos emeralds, to defend Mobius from Robotnik and other villains. \nBehavior: Hedgehogs are typically hot tempered, and usually display some arrogance/cockiness. They are usually impulsive, stubborn and impatient. Overall they are a prideful race.\nAbilities:All hedgehogs have the ability to roll up into a ball when faced with danger. Either that, or they run away (which is what their speed is for). They can also do various attacks when rolled up into a ball, including spin attack, spin jump, spin dash, etc. Although hedgehogs can run quite fast, they can't run at sonic speeds, with only Sonic being able to do so. (Shadow probably rivals him at this, though I don't think he has broke the sound barrier like Sonic has done many times before).\nDiet: Modern hedgehogs are omnivores, their diet is similar to that of a human's/overlander's, and the vast majority of Mobians. Their hunter-gatherer ancestors ate insects, haha.\nReproduction: Female hedgehogs usually give birth to about 1-3 hoglets at once. A hedgehog pair mate for life. Back in the nomadic days, male hedgehogs usually attracted their mates with how fast they can run, and their ability to hunt. When faced with a rival male hedgehog for the same girl, they usually raced each other and even fought to the death over the female. Nowadays hedgehogs don't particularly do that, especially since the world population has dramatically increased and is much more global than ever before. Now, it's not unusual to see hedgehogs pair up with members of other races. (Ex: Sonic and Sally, and Scourge and Fiona) However it's more common among male hedgehogs to mate outside their race than females. \nAppearence: Each hedgehog has it's own unique look, however the basic features for males are a wider chest, and a pair of quills on their back, which females lack.(On a side note, I've found that female hedgehog fan characters with back quills and large noses kinda..odd in my opinion, I feel like those features are reserved for males.) Males can also have chest fur (As found in Shadow and Silver), and may also have light peachy fur on their arms, belly and muzzle. Hedgehog quills can be all sorts of shapes and sizes. Their colors are inherited from their parents, it can either be a mixing of the two, or one color (or a shade of that color) from a parent. Males have larger noses, while females have smaller noses.\nLifespan: average is 90 years. Like all Mobians, they are immune to most diseases that affect humans and overlanders, and have a hardy immune system. \nSubraces: African Pygmy, European, and Long Eared Hedgehog, just to name a few.\nOrigins: It is unknown as to what continent on Mobius hedgehogs originated from, since there are traces of their existance found throughout most of the world, except Downunda and the Poles. \nNaming customs: Like how echidnas have their naming customs, (Ex: two letter suffixes after their names for female echidnas), ancient hedgehogs and many other Mobians had their own customs, usually naming their offspring with their physical or behavioral characteristics. A newborn might remind a parent the color of the sea, or of a particular flower, or a special talent, and try to name them based on that. In modern times, hedgehog parents may do either, like naming their child with a particular trait they have, names like Sonic, Silver, or Shadow. Some parents don't even go there, and just borrow names that are commonly found in humans and Overlanders, such as Amy.\nClothing: Ancestral hedgehog males never covered themselves, and females seldom did if they only lived with their mate. When with family or any other large group they wore clothes or when in extreme cold. Nowadays males wear some little to a moderate amount of clothing, while females wore them constantly. \nNatural Predators: Long time ago, Mobians and large Mobinis(non-sentient animals) did hunt other Mobians for food. It was a fight for survival. A hedgehog's natural predators were likely wolves, large cats, and bears. Echidnas only captured them to use for labor. \nNatural Rivals: Hedgehogs competed for food with other mobians to survive. Their rivals usually were foxes, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, echidnas, skunks, badgers, porcupines, tenrecs, rats, mice, eagles, hawks, mongooses, and small cats just to name a few.\n",
