Aside from crime, one of the few ways to survive is to sell oneself as a slave on the open market. Brinna has done so for the sake of her family, and has been fortunate enough to be purchased by (arguably) the most sane and compassionate member of the ruling family.\n\nLatex is common fashion - and often mandatory for certain slaves. So while I don't believe it has happened canonically, I couldn't resist seeing how the timid mousie would look in it. At least one in the ruling family would approve, anyway.\n\nThe Great Tree is a reference to Yggdrasil, the mythical tree that entwines the various realms of the universe (hence the background).
