"writing": "The Return of Routine: Part 2 by: Pent Ghelsburg\n\nDisclaimer: This story series is the second continuation of my other series. While it is not directly related to the background story of my fursona, it is very early in his life. This story attempts to maintain the scientific realism of my other works. However the basic theme now shifts from something new but not all together different. Be also mindful that this is my first go with some minor smut. Let me know if you have any comments, suggestions, or criticisms. I am open to everything so please feel free to leave me a message! \n\n“Science is a part of the reality of living; it is the way, the how and the why for everything in our experience.”\n-Rachel Carson\n\nChapter 6: The thrill of the chase\n\n\tReturning to the wilderness seemed wild, for a lack of a better word, for me. My mind raced a mile a minute as the scents around me wafted through my vulpine nostrils. However my increased sense of smell allowed me some new enjoyment in the experience. Winter had changed to spring since my last endeavor and the white powder was replaced by billows of dew on the freshly grown plants. The wilderness was astray with the smell of fresh maple despite being dampened by a recent shower. Not a cloud could be seen in the sky as the rainstorm had long passed into the distance. \n\n\tBeing somewhat animal in person certainly had it's advantages for the task at hand. Having a full knowledge of the vulpine diet and an idea of what they smelt like could prove beneficial. My ability to hone in on scent was keen, even through the myriad of other scents that mingled in the area. As I perched down on all fours, I tried to pick up a scent. It was clear there were foxes nearby, possibly a fox hole or den with a full family of them. With my bag on my back, I continued forward looking as if I were the predator of an unsuspecting prey. \n\n\tComing upon a quick flowing stream, my direction was diverted for a moment to quench my thirst. Some nearby Deer stared over at me unhindered by the seemingly overgrown, and now out of season, arctic fox. Before long the deer pounced into the distance as if startled by something, but I brushed it off as sheer coincidence. Still I lapped my tongue into the cool spring water to sate my desire. It wasn't long before I picked up the sound of a howl in the distance. I decided that it was best to keep moving, not to want to attract the attention of what I perceived to be a wolf. \n\n\tBack on the trail of the scent, the aroma became stronger and stronger. I began to pick up the scent of something nearby. It was not something I was entirely used to. The combination of primal instinct and my own preteen curiosity were not making things any easier. It was becoming harder and harder to keep my focus the closer I came to my perceived target. All I wanted to do was catch whatever it was that was out there. I crept down on all fours, ready to pounce and catch whatever it was I was looking for.\n\n\tBefore long I couldn't help myself any longer. I was running full force into the bushes. The shrubbery parading past me as I crashed through each and every bush with each. I looked around, there was nothing to be seen and yet...I could still smell whatever it was. It was getting stronger and I couldn't help but sniff my snout into the air. It was stronger for sure and I knew I was getting close. My desire to catch it grew exponentially as my gentle strides picked up in pace. Then all of the sudden, I heard something move. I pounced forward, not even seeing what it was and then felt something move in my front paws.\n\n\tIt was strange, I could feel it squirming and yet I didn't want to move my paws. I was afraid and yet curious. It wriggled...more and more almost causing a tickling feeling against my paw pads. My inquisitive nature was killing me...I wanted to know. Slowly but surely I opened up my paws and surely enough was a small mouse lying underneath. Scared to the world, the thing was crawled up and protecting myself. All at once I felt incredibly bad. I couldn't go through with whatever it was I was doing and opened my paws to let it go.\n\n\tI didn't know to that point the power that came over me. It was surreal, and alien. Altogether it was something that I was unprepared for. As I sit there panting, it took a while before I could regain my purpose. The scent still captivated me but the primal desire had left my mind. I picked myself up and went about my way as if nothing ever happened. The scent eventually dissipated and I remembered my purpose. Taking a few deep breaths and regaining my composure I continued forward to continue looking for the fox hole. \n\nChapter 7: The big bad wolf\n\n\tWith my lewd actions behind me and my mind back on proper forward thinking I could pursue the task at hand. My own scent mingled with the musk that had so recently enticed me, dampening it's allure on my person. Still a more concerning affair was at hand, the search for the elusive fox den. Another howl could be heard in the distance, this time much more loud than before. I deducted that the wolf was nearby but what it was after was hard to say. A rustling in a nearby set of bushes caused me to jump backwards in fear, half believing that it was the wolf. \n\n\tIt wasn't long before a large masculine red fox came tumbling out of the bush. I was so worried about the wolf, I had almost forgotten about my target. Fumbling around in my backpack I fiddled around desperately looking for something to trap it with, but it's awareness was too keen. The fox flitted back into the bushes before dissapearing into the distance before I looked back with a frown on my snout. I was not about to lose hope as I leaned over and pressed my snout onto the floor in hopes of gaining his scent.\n\n\tThe scent wasn't hard to pick up despite being mixed with an array of other odors. I knew exactly what I was looking for. Honing in on a foxes scent wasn't hard, especially for a fellow fox. As I perched downward and haunched on all fours, I deduced that the fox couldn't have gone far off into the distance. His trail was leading north back into the thick bushes pushing my way through them. After breaching the shrubbery, I found myself staring straight into a pair of angry yellow eyes.\n\n\tI stopped in my tracks before trying to ease away. Saliva slipping out of the gray snout in front of me as a tongue slipped out licking over it's black lips. I overheard a snarl before a gnashing set of teeth ripped into my right arm. I cried out on pain as blood poored out of my wound. Sensing I was it's prey, I began to panic and pick myself up by reverse my path tearing my flesh from it's fangs. Tripping over my clumbsy footpaws in the process, I landed straight on my knees. Once again eye level with the beast, I got a better look at it. Dark gray fur matted over it's lithe body. The wolf clearly look overtaken by hunger and desperation staring at me in anticipation of it's next meal, blood dripping from it's fangs.\n\n\tIt was becoming harder to think midst the pain of my gaping wound. Panic set in before I casually set aside my backpack in search of a makeshift meal for the wolf. I was not about to become it's meal nor I was naive enough to think the animal would just let me go. I knew I had a roast beef sandwich that could perhaps entice the predators focus elsewhere. Locating it in my bag, I slowly hoisted it out and tossed it to the side of the wolf. It didn't take long for it to catch a whiff of the free meal. The wolf tilted it's head over curiously looking at the dish before dipping it's head down to dine on the delicacy.\n\n\tI took the opportunity to pick myself up and dash off into the distance. Forgetting all about my original task, all I wanted to do was get away from my woodby pursuant. I was afraid for my life knowing that wolves preyed on foxes. That wolf seemed keen on me and I wasn't about to let it finish dining on me for it's meal. I found a nearby cave and decided to camp there for the time being in hope that the wolf would lose interest in me in lieu of it's makeshift delicacy. I would use this time to tend to my wound which had lost a sizable amount of blood and continued to hemorhage down my shirt and fur.\n\n\tIt was hard to maintain conscience. I was dizzy from the loss of blood and the sheer panic of the moment. I took off my shirt and cut off both of my sleeves before dampening them with my water bottle. I then took one sleeve to clean the wound before disposing of it. I followed wrapping the other sleeve around the wound and winced as I tightened it around my arm. I gathered some nearby twigs in an effort to make a fire to ward off the wolf, should it have come back. Grinding the wood into some flint, trying to spark a blaze. Embers shot around the branches as flames gathered around the base.\n\n\tI sat considering my next action, finding it hard to concentrate with the pain in my upper arm. I huddled next to the fire in hopes of easing my discomfort but found very little. The fire built up slowly as I hunched over it for warmth. Outside some rain fell down from the canopy above, creating a more relaxing and serene scene. The day had been long and I was weary from over exerting myself despite being filled with panic and adrenaline. I decided to take this opportunity to wait the day out and rest my worn out body. Laying flat on on the floor I tried to get some shut-eye for a least a little while. It didn't take long before I fainted on the ground.\n\nChapter 8: The visitor\n\n\tAs I came around to what I thought was the next morning, I found myself back in my bedroom. Still writhing in pain, I looked to my injured arm which was now wrapped in a bandage. I surmised that someone I knew must have found me in the cave and taken me home. Looking around the room I found a figure on the side of the bed in a lab coat. The person looked back around as I came to. “Hi there, little guy. How're you feeling?”\n\n\tI tried to get a better look at the person but my vision was still blurred as I strained to look at them. “I feel alright, I guess just a bit woozy is all.” The figure peered over me as it patted my forehead with a wet rag before responding. “You need rest, you've lost a lot of blood. Your lucky your alive.” I remembered the whole incident with the wolf but the bottom line was, I had not accomplished my task. Instead I lay at home bedridden tending to my wound.\n\n\tAs I wrapped my paw around my body to grasp my arm the figure lurched over stopping me from doing so. “You need to stop applying pressure, the wound is still open and hasn't fully healed yet.” the voice seemed feminine but I couldn't quite tell in my current state of delirium. I set my paw over my chest as the figure leaned over me to apply some ointment to my open wound. A cooling sensation overtook my body as the warm hand applied it to the sore spot.\n\n\tThe anesthesia didn't take long to take effect as the pain began to wash away and was replaced by numbness and a slight chill to my upper arm. “Feeling better now?” The pain had indeed subsided as I responded. “It feels better but it's still sore.” The figure stood back up before answering. “Of course it does silly, that was just to help.” I was indeed appreciative of the care I was receiving before delivering a response. “Thanks for helping me out, Did you take me out of the woods?”\n\n\t“Nah, your friend found you and brought you here. You were gone for a few days and your brother reported you missing.” The idea swirled around my head despite being a bit difficult to digest. I couldn't help but thinking who it was that had gone looking for me? It had to a scout as I didn't really know anyone outside the group anymore. “Who was it?” I asked to sate my curiosity. “I think the boy said his name was Arthur.”\n\n\tIt all made clear sense now. Arthur was invested enough in me to be concerned about me being missing. My brother knocked on the door before entering the room. Approaching the bed I could make out him sniffling beneath his soft voice. “I was so worried about you, Pent. Don't go doing that again ok?” I could understand his concern and didn't want to upset him. “I promise Samaliel, don't worry.” The experience had certainly dampened my enthusiasm for hunting down animals but it wasn't about to eliminate my original purpose.\n\n\tSamaliel continued to sit at my bedside as the figure continued to care for me. This went on for several days as my strength and wits slowly came back to me. The mystery figure turned out to be our old family doctor who had come out on yet another house call. The lady had already seen me once before in the past and was already used to my condition. After a heart filled gratitude from both myself and my brother she instructed us to continue to cater to the wound with antiseptic and antibiotics to keep it from getting infected.\n\n\tShe added that it was may also have needed some hydrocortizone. As the wound and bandage may have ground together causing them to become itchy. She did not want want me to re-open the wound and assured us that in time the wound would clean up nicely. Having completed her duty she left our humble abode leaving Samaliel at my bedside to tend to my recovery. Lucky for him, I was ready to return to my normal life. “Just take it easy alright, Pent? I know you want what's best for us too but don't go getting yourself killed.” I assured him with confidence. “Don't worry I won't.”\n\nChapter 9: The incident\n\n\tDespite not having achieved my means in the woods, Samaliel and I knew that something had to be done to alleviate the financial burden we were facing. My wounds were not entirely healed but we decided that a safer route to experiment on things to age Samaliel would just be to rent a lab. Renting a lab was not cheap but I did not have the supplies necessary to undertake a similar experiment without problems. Samaliel suggested that they used some of their remaining money to rent a lab for a day.\n\n\tI decided to take Samaliel's bike over since I couldn't drive a car anymore as I was much too short now and probably lacked the skill and dexterity to do so. I hadn't ridden a bike in sometime and it was hard to grasp the pedals and bars with my awkward paw shape and size. Instead I resolved to run on my own four haunches and fiddle with the bike another time. After placing my shoes and socks into my bag, I dashed off towards the lab as fast as I could. It didn't take me but 15 minutes to arrive at the door to my new rent a lab.\n\n\tAfter I returned the footwear to my paws, I opened the doors to the facility. Upon entry I looked over at the counter where a clerk stared at a computer screen without paying much attention to me. The clerk seemed young, maybe a high school senior or college freshman at best. I gathered they didn't care much for their job and mustered as much courage as I could before approaching the desk. The desk was quite high and I couldn't quite see over it without standing on my tippy toes. “Hello, I'm here for the keys to the rent-a-lab?” I said with as strong a voice as I could muster.\n\n\tThe older male didn't really budge from his chair. He was quite relaxed with his gum laden shoe bottoms plastured on top of the polished lacquer wood. In a deep voice he responded. “Your name, please.” I was glad he didn't bother to look at me else he might had been concerned about my age amongst other things. “Pent Ghelsburg.” The older male didn't consider really looking into it before shuffling a small set of bronze keys onto the tabletop. “Room 110, back of the hall to the right. Just clean up before you leave and return the keys when your done.” After thanking the older male I rushed into a set of glass automatic doors that led into the hall he spoke of. \n\n\tLucky for me no one seemed to be in the hall. The corridor was shone as if recently stripped and waxed while the walls smelled of fresh paint. Obviously the place had been remodeled recently and was under good ownership despite the poor help at the front desk. It didn't take me long to find room 110. The black numbers on the door gave away the location as I fiddled with the keys in my paws before trying to unlock the door. After doing so the door gave way as I opened it. Entering it was like I had entered my own personal fantasy land.\n\n\tThe room was very well organized with a number of cabinets and drawers that lined the walls. In the center an array of equipment was set out ranging from simple bunsen burners to distributors and other complex machinery. I made sure to lock the door behind me. Strangely in the corner of the room was a conveyor belt complete with a computer. I deducted that this was an ordering machine for whatever I needed for my experiment. I decided that it was best to start out with an assortment of canine, vulpine, lupine , and other related species samples.\n\n\tThe next thing I decided that I would need would be a collection of older male human blood samples. The computer collection was quite extensive as I punched in an order for blood samples for 18 to 21 year old males. Not wanting Samaliel to be completely wet behind the ears these ages seemed to make more sense to me. Taking the human samples first I decided it would be smart to further examine my specimens. Putting them under the microscope I deducted that the most physically adept and active culture was the one that was identified as a 18 year old male. Most likely belonging to a physically active and fit male this one seemed the most aggressive and I assumed it would be the best fit for my needs.\n\n\tMoving forward I returned to the conveyor belt before distributing the different cultures of vulpine blood samples I was given. 6 samples existed and each was labeled with the species of fox that it belonged to. Still attracted to the idea of another fox for a brother it was the first animal I had in mind for the experiement. Under the microscope it didn't seem to prove to be too much of a promising sample. Seeing an arctic fox sample, I decided to test that having an inate bias towards the species now. The culture was proficient and alluring. This particular fox was seemingly an apex predator given the activity in it's blood cells.\n\n\tI decided no further testing of the samples was necessary and proceeded to move on. Before continuing, I shuttered the drapes to reduce the amount of glare and light into the room. Locating the spectroanalysis machine I plugged in the arctic foxes sample with a wax paper to deduce it's genetic makeup. After the readout came printing out of the nearby computer the results were clear. The fox was a male approximately 2.5 years old making it about 17 in human years. The fox also seemed to have a darker pigmentation of fur, gray was my guess but it was hard to say from a recessive gene. Still the activity of the culture was promising enough to give me hope.\n\n\tSeeing no reason to perform the same task on the human sample, I decided to press on. I began by mixing the two samples together on a large dish. Stepping away for a moment I took this time to order a strong protein based mixture which was delivered soon thereafter. Taking the jar of powder back to the table I inserted a spoon into the whey supplement. Easing some of the white substance out without spilling it seemed problematic but I managed to distribute it to the disk without much issue. The powder seeming to moisten as it absorbed into the liquid based culture of blood. Before long I added some distilled water to hasten to process of absorption. \n\n\tThe next step that I could recall was the necessity of the human growth hormone. Stepping back over towards the ordering machine I glanced over the catalogue looking for a supply of it. The amount of options was unreal. Once clicking on my selection a small rack of two vials of the clear liquid came out on the belt. Taking the vials over to the counter I debated how much I would need to finalize my concoction. Placing it back under the microscope the results were promising. As with before the cells were meging. However neither cell was dominating the other. Instead they were mutating as they converged.\n\n\tInserting a small needle into the tray, I sampled some of the mixture into the spectroanalysis. The results were promising but not as good as I had hoped. The diploid had indeed increased to 50 in some cells but it was not the dominant diploid number yet. Returning the solution to the HGH I decided on a small introduction of 2 ml of serum into the culture. I deduced that with time the HGH should positively effect the growth of the culture and acclimate to the strengths of each cell respectively. Only time would tell if my conclusion was right.\n\n\tPlacing the final product into a test tube, I placed it on the table before deciding to play around with my extra time for the day. I wanted to get the most bang for my buck and so I took the remaining samples of canidae family blood and placed them into the centrifuge. My playful mind began to whirl with the possibilities of a super canine. Turning the device on into high gear the rotators began to spin around and whirl. Grabbing over on the counter I introduced some Isopropyl alcohol into the chamber in order to lubricate it.\n\n\tThe machine began to choke and spit clearly unused to the liquid mid activity. The centrifuge began to leak out the sides before reaching the wires causing them to sputter with electricity. I began to panic looking around desperately for something to put out the electrical disturbance. Spotting a chemically based fire extinguisher I lept into action. Removing the pin I returned to the growing electrical shortage which was getting dangerous close to the source. After spraying it the result was unwanted, causing the shortage to leap over to the wall causing a fire.\n\n\tStill believing I could put the fire out, I continued my actions. The room becoming more and more hot as the fire began to consume the room in front of me. Soon after losing hope I grabbed my test tube before jetting out the door yelling. “Fire, Fire!” Apparently the fool at the front desk had left his post. Looking back I could see the fire had already reached the door seemingly reacting with all the chemicals as I frantically left the building. \n\n\tRushing out of the building, I looked back with a sense of guilt. Still it was an accident and the chemical store in the building had only served to feed the fire. The fire continued to consume the structure and torch the inside. Before long the fire plumed upward with a large explosion. The impact of the shockwave from the building caused me to shield my eyes from the eruption of heat and light. A cloud of smoke and fumes billowed from the building, debris flowing outwards from the blast. Sirens could be heard in the distance. I decided that this was a good time to head home.\n\nChapter 10: The reckoning\n\n\tReturning home left me wary with an assortment of feelings but mainly guilt and dismay. However I was not totally to blame, I continually told myself this. The chemical fire spurned with flames and the latter explosion seemed to make sense as most chemical incidents needed to be treated rather quickly to be remedied. I found myself fortunate to have escaped the ordeal in tact. I was lucky to be in a room where the chemicals were few and far between but the store beyond the room I was in proved too much to be contained even if the authorities had responded sooner.\n\n\tMy brother greeted me at the door, my frowned face gave away a sense of disappointment that he took as failure. However after telling him my story, he understood fully the brevity of the situation. Still with the building itself blown to smithereens there was little chance they would find the culprit and there was little liability in the incident having been accidental. Samaliel assured me of this before asking me about my progress with the experiment. I had almost forgotten about the result of my toil.\n\n\tTaking the vial out of my pocket, I showed it to my brother. He looked on it with curiosity before he asked. “That's all you have?” I had not considered making more but that was out of the question now. “Yeah, it will have to do.” Grasping the vial in his hand he continued to inquire as to it's use. “So what do I do with it?” I grappled with the question in my mind before answering. “We can either inject it into your blood or you can drink it. You will need to maintain a high protein diet for it to work effectively.\n\n\tSamaliel did not like the idea of needles and didn't take long to consider his options. Samaliel looked over at me before heading over to the fridge for a protein shake. Pouring the bottle into a cup he loosened the top of the test tube before adding it into the cup. The blood mixing in caused the liquid to turn cloudy as I watched him look into pinkish liquid. Pinching his nose he lifted the drink into his mouth forcing it down before putting the empty cup down in disapproval. \n\n\t“So how long will it take to work?” Samaliel looked at me with a grimace inquiring as to the nature of the drink. I had not truly considered this notion. “I'm not sure to be honest. Just make sure to keep drinking a protein shake each day and that should speed it up according to my notes.” Samaliel looked at me with a light smile before returning to help me get settled back into the house. I still reeked of chemicals and needed a shower. However it would be some time before we would see if my pursuit had paid off.",

<br /><br />\tBeing somewhat animal in person certainly had it&#039;s advantages for the task at hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;Having a full knowledge of the vulpine diet and an idea of what they smelt like could prove beneficial. My ability to hone in on scent was keen, even through the myriad of other scents that mingled in the area. As I perched down on all fours, I tried to pick up a scent. It was clear there were foxes nearby, possibly a&nbsp;&nbsp;fox hole or den with a full family of them. With my bag on my back, I continued forward looking as if I were the predator of an unsuspecting prey. <br /><br />\tComing upon a quick flowing stream, my direction was diverted for a moment to quench my thirst. It wasn&#039;t long before I picked up the sound of a howl in the distance. I decided that it was best to keep moving, not to want to attract the attention of what I perceived to be a wolf. <br /><br />\tBack on the trail of the scent, the aroma became stronger and stronger. I began to pick up the scent of something nearby. It was not something I was entirely used to.&nbsp;&nbsp; The combination of primal instinct and my own preteen curiosity were not making things any easier. It was becoming harder and harder to keep my focus the closer I came to my perceived target. All I wanted to do was catch whatever it was that was out there. I crept down on all fours, ready to pounce and catch whatever it was I was looking for.<br /><br />\tBefore long I couldn&#039;t help myself any longer. I was running full force into the bushes. The shrubbery parading past me as I crashed through each and every bush with each. I looked around, there was nothing to be seen and yet...I could still smell whatever it was. It was getting stronger and I couldn&#039;t help but sniff my snout into the air.&nbsp;&nbsp; It was stronger for sure and I knew I was getting close. My desire to catch it grew exponentially as my gentle strides picked up in pace. Then all of the sudden, I heard something move. I pounced forward, not even seeing what it was and then felt something move in my front paws.<br /><br />\tIt was strange, I could feel it squirming and yet I didn&#039;t want to move my paws. I couldn&#039;t go through with whatever it was I was doing and opened my paws to let it go.<br /><br />\tI didn&#039;t know to that point the power that came over me. It was surreal, and alien. Altogether it was something that I&nbsp;&nbsp;was unprepared for. <br /><br />Chapter 7: The big bad wolf<br /><br />\tWith my lewd actions behind me and my mind back on proper forward thinking I could pursue the task at hand. My own scent mingled with the musk that had so recently enticed me, dampening it&#039;s allure on my person. <br /><br />\tIt wasn&#039;t long before a large masculine red fox came tumbling out of the bush. I was so worried about the wolf, I had almost forgotten about my target. Fumbling around in my backpack I fiddled around desperately looking for something to trap it with, but it&#039;s awareness was too keen. The fox flitted back into the bushes before dissapearing into the distance before I looked back with a frown on my snout. I was not about to lose hope as I leaned over and pressed my snout onto the floor in hopes of gaining his scent.<br /><br />\tThe scent wasn&#039;t hard to pick up despite being mixed with an array of other odors. I knew exactly what I was looking for. Honing in on a foxes scent wasn&#039;t hard, especially for a fellow fox.&nbsp;&nbsp; As I perched downward and haunched on all fours, I deduced that the fox couldn&#039;t have gone far off into the distance. His trail was leading north back into the thick bushes pushing my way through them. After&nbsp;&nbsp;breaching the shrubbery, I found myself staring straight into a pair of angry yellow eyes.<br /><br />\tI stopped in my tracks before trying to ease away. Saliva slipping out of the gray snout in front of me as a tongue slipped out licking over it&#039;s black lips. I overheard a snarl before a gnashing set of teeth ripped into my right arm.&nbsp;&nbsp;I cried out on pain as blood poored out of my wound. Sensing I was it&#039;s prey, I began to panic and pick myself up by reverse my path tearing my flesh from it&#039;s fangs. Tripping over my clumbsy footpaws in the process, I landed straight on my knees. Once again eye level with the beast, I got a better look at it. Dark gray fur matted over it&#039;s lithe body. The wolf clearly look overtaken by hunger and desperation staring at me in anticipation of it&#039;s next meal, blood dripping from it&#039;s fangs.<br /><br />\tIt was becoming harder to think midst the pain of my gaping wound. Panic set in before I casually set aside my backpack in search of a makeshift meal for the wolf. I was not about to become it&#039;s meal nor I was naive enough to think the animal would just let me go. I knew I had a roast beef sandwich that could perhaps entice the predators focus elsewhere. Locating it in my bag, I slowly hoisted it out and tossed it to the side of the wolf. It didn&#039;t take long for it to catch a whiff of the free meal. The wolf tilted it&#039;s head over curiously looking at the dish before dipping it&#039;s head down to dine on the delicacy.<br /><br />\tI took the opportunity to pick myself up and dash off into the distance. Forgetting all about my original task, all I wanted to do was get away from my woodby pursuant. I was afraid for my life knowing that wolves preyed on foxes. That wolf seemed keen on me and I wasn&#039;t about to let it finish dining on me for it&#039;s meal.&nbsp;&nbsp;I found a nearby cave and decided to camp there for the time being in hope that the wolf would lose interest in me in lieu of it&#039;s makeshift delicacy. I would use this time to tend to my wound which had lost a sizable amount of blood and continued to hemorhage down my shirt and fur.<br /><br />\tIt was hard to maintain conscience. Embers shot around the branches as flames gathered around the base.<br /><br />\tI sat considering my next action, finding it hard to concentrate with the pain in my upper arm. I huddled next to the fire in hopes of easing my discomfort but found very little.&nbsp;&nbsp; The fire built up slowly as I hunched over it for warmth. Outside some rain fell down from the canopy above, creating a more relaxing and serene scene. The day had been long and I was weary from over exerting myself despite being filled with panic and adrenaline.&nbsp;&nbsp;I decided to take this opportunity to wait the day out and rest my worn out body. Laying flat on on the floor I tried to get some shut-eye for a least a little while. It didn&#039;t take long before I fainted on the ground.<br /><br />Chapter 8: The visitor<br /><br />\tAs I came around to what I thought was the next morning, I found myself back in my bedroom. Still writhing in pain, I looked to my injured arm which was now wrapped in a bandage. I surmised that someone I knew must have found me in the cave and taken me home. Looking around the room I found a figure on the side of the bed in a lab coat.&nbsp;&nbsp; The person looked back around as I came to. &ldquo;Hi there, little guy. How&#039;re you feeling?&rdquo;<br /><br />\tI tried to get a better look at the person but my vision was still blurred as I strained to look at them. &ldquo;I feel alright, I guess just a bit woozy is all.&rdquo; The figure peered over me as it patted my forehead with a wet rag before responding. &ldquo; You need rest, you&#039;ve lost a lot of blood. Your lucky your alive.&rdquo; I remembered the whole incident with the wolf but the bottom line was, I had not accomplished my task. Instead I lay at home bedridden tending to my wound.<br /><br />\tAs I wrapped my paw around my body to grasp my arm the figure lurched over stopping me from doing so. &ldquo; You need to stop applying pressure, the wound is still open and hasn&#039;t fully healed yet.&rdquo; the voice seemed feminine but I couldn&#039;t quite tell in my current state of delirium. I set my paw over my chest as the figure leaned over me to apply some ointment to my open wound. A cooling sensation overtook my body as the warm hand applied it to the sore spot.<br /><br />\tThe anesthesia didn&#039;t take long to take effect as the pain began to wash away and was replaced by numbness and a slight chill to my upper arm. &ldquo;Feeling better now?&rdquo; The pain had indeed subsided as I responded. &ldquo; It feels better but it&#039;s still sore.&rdquo; The figure stood back up before answering. &ldquo;Of course it does silly, that was just to help.&rdquo; I was indeed appreciative of the care I was receiving before delivering a response. &ldquo; Thanks for helping me out, Did you take me out of the woods?&rdquo;<br /><br />\t&ldquo;Nah, your friend found you and brought you here. You were gone for a few days and your brother reported you missing.&rdquo; The idea swirled around my head despite being a bit difficult to digest. I couldn&#039;t help but thinking who it was that had gone looking for me? It had to a scout as I didn&#039;t really know anyone outside the group anymore. &ldquo;Who was it?&rdquo; I asked to sate my curiosity.&nbsp;&nbsp;&ldquo;I think the boy said his name was Arthur.&rdquo;<br /><br />\tIt all made clear sense now. Arthur was invested enough in me to be concerned about me being missing. My brother knocked on the door before entering the room. Approaching the bed I could make out him sniffling beneath his soft voice. &ldquo;I was so worried about you, Pent. Don&#039;t go doing that again ok?&rdquo; I could understand his concern and didn&#039;t want to upset him. &ldquo;I promise Samaliel, don&#039;t worry.&rdquo; The experience had certainly dampened my enthusiasm for hunting down animals but it wasn&#039;t about to&nbsp;&nbsp; eliminate my original purpose.<br /><br />\tSamaliel continued to sit at my bedside as the figure continued to care for me. This went on for several days as my strength and wits slowly came back to me. The mystery figure turned out to be our old family doctor who had come out on yet another house call. The lady had already seen me once before in the past and was already used to my condition. After a heart filled gratitude from both myself and my brother she instructed us to continue to cater to the wound with antiseptic and antibiotics to keep it from getting infected.<br /><br />\tShe added that it was may also have needed some hydrocortizone. &ldquo;Just take it easy alright, Pent? I know you want what&#039;s best for us too but don&#039;t go getting yourself killed.&rdquo; I assured him with confidence. &ldquo;Don&#039;t worry I won&#039;t.&rdquo;<br /><br />Chapter 9: The incident<br /><br />\tDespite not having achieved my means in the woods, Samaliel and I knew that something had to be done to alleviate the financial burden we were facing. My wounds were not entirely healed but we decided that a safer route to experiment on things to age Samaliel would just be to rent a lab. Renting a lab was not cheap but I did not have the supplies necessary to undertake a similar experiment without&nbsp;&nbsp;problems. Samaliel suggested that they used some of their remaining money to rent a lab for a day.<br /><br />\tI decided to take Samaliel&#039;s bike over since I couldn&#039;t drive a car anymore as I was much too short now and probably lacked the skill and dexterity to do so. I hadn&#039;t ridden a bike in sometime and it was hard to grasp the pedals and bars with my awkward paw shape and size. Instead I resolved to run on my own four haunches and fiddle with the bike another time. After placing my shoes and socks into my bag, I dashed off towards the lab as fast as I could.&nbsp;&nbsp; It didn&#039;t take me&nbsp;&nbsp;but 15 minutes to arrive at the door to my new rent a lab.<br /><br />\tAfter I returned the footwear to my paws, I opened the doors to the facility. Upon entry I looked over at the counter where a clerk stared at a computer screen without paying much attention to me. The clerk seemed young, maybe a high school senior or college freshman at best. I gathered they didn&#039;t care much for their job and mustered as much courage as I could before approaching the desk. The desk was quite high and I couldn&#039;t quite see over it without standing on my tippy toes. &ldquo;Hello, I&#039;m here for the keys to the rent-a-lab?&rdquo; I said with as strong a voice as I could muster.<br /><br />\tThe older male didn&#039;t really budge from his chair. He was quite relaxed with his gum laden shoe bottoms plastured on top of the polished lacquer wood. In a deep voice he responded. &ldquo;Your name, please.&rdquo; I was glad he didn&#039;t bother to look at me else he might had been concerned about my age amongst other things. &ldquo;Pent Ghelsburg.&rdquo; The older male didn&#039;t consider really looking into it before shuffling a small set of bronze keys onto the tabletop. &ldquo;Room 110, back of the hall to the right. Just clean up before you leave and return the keys when your done.&rdquo; After thanking the older male I rushed into a set of glass automatic doors that led into the hall he spoke of. <br /><br />\tLucky for me no one seemed to be in the hall. The corridor was shone as if recently stripped and waxed while the walls smelled of fresh paint. Obviously the place had been remodeled recently and was under good ownership despite the poor help at the front desk. It didn&#039;t take me long to find room 110. The black numbers on the door gave away the location as I fiddled with the keys in my paws before trying to unlock the door. After doing so the door gave way as I opened it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Entering it was like I had entered my own personal fantasy land.<br /><br />\tThe room was very well organized with a number of cabinets and drawers that lined the walls. I was lucky to be in a room where the chemicals were few and far between but the store beyond the room I was in proved too much to be contained even if the authorities had responded sooner.<br /><br />\tMy brother greeted me at the door, my frowned face gave away a sense of disappointment that he took as failure. However after telling him my story, he understood fully the brevity of the situation. Still with the building itself blown to smithereens there was little chance they would find the culprit and there was little liability in the incident having been accidental. Samaliel assured me of this before asking me about my progress with the experiment. I had almost forgotten about the result of my toil.<br /><br />\tTaking the vial out of my pocket, I showed it to my brother. He looked on it with curiosity before he asked. &ldquo;That&#039;s all you have?&rdquo; I had not considered making more but that was out of the question now. &ldquo;Yeah, it will have to do.&rdquo; Grasping the vial in his hand he continued to inquire as to it&#039;s use. &ldquo; So what do I do with it?&rdquo; I grappled with the question in my mind before answering. &ldquo; We can either inject it into your blood or you can drink it. You will need to maintain a high protein diet for it to work effectively.<br /><br />\tSamaliel did not like the idea of needles and didn&#039;t take long to consider his options. <br /><br />\t&ldquo;So how long will it take to work?&rdquo; Samaliel looked at me with a grimace inquiring as to the nature of the drink. I had not truly considered this notion. &ldquo;I&#039;m not sure to be honest. Just make sure to keep drinking a protein shake each day and that should speed it up according to my notes.&rdquo; Samaliel looked at me with a light smile before returning to help me get settled back into the house. I still reeked of chemicals and needed a shower. However it would be some time before we would see if my pursuit had paid off.</span>",
