WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10th, 1960
About a hour after noontime, Marge and the cubs had finished having lunch at The Club Cafe' in Santa Rosa. Over the past years, it was always the family's favorite place to eat while in Santa Rosa, with their excellent meals and home made deserts.
On this day, Marge took the cubs to Santa Rosa to go shopping for school clothes. Within four weeks, the 1960 - 1961 school will be starting, which will be September the 5th, on a Monday.
As Marge and the cubs were on their way to a modest size department store, Clarence asked, "Will I be getting new clothes too?".
"Well ya can't go to school naked", Rex remarked as everyone laughed.
"Okay, Rex. That will do", Marge said, even though she too got a laugh from Rex's remark.
Marge then said to Clarence, "You'll be getting new school clothes too being that we don't know how much longer it will be before the time machine is fixed".
"So Clarence might be going to school with us again", Donna surmised.
"He'll be in the same class with me again", said Rex.
"And we can make up more invisible cub stories when Stimpson Mink stops the school bus for railroad crossings", Jed said to Clarence.
"Well, we don't know for sure yet", Marge said to the cubs. "If the time machine is repaired before the 5th of next month, Clarence will be back in the future by then".
"Then if the time machine is fixed by then, I won't be wearing these clothes I'm getting in this day and time", Clarence mentioned.
"If that were the case, You'll have them to wear in the 2018 - 2019 school year", Marge suggested to Clarence.
"What I mean is, all the clothes we have now days will be way out of style in my day and time", Clarence explained.
"You mean the cubs in 2018 would laugh at the clothes we have", Jed asked Clarence.
"That's right", Clarence answered.
"Well, we can't buy clothes from a day and time that won't exist for another 58 years", Marge assured Clarence, then suggested, "But has it dawned on you these clothes will be vintage and classic when you return to the future with them? And they'll still be brand new from 58 years in the past".
"Gee, I never thought about that", Clarence agreed.
"That's why they say Mama knows best", Donna remarked.
"I believe who ever came up with that saying hit it right on target", Marge agreed with her daughter.
Pretty soon, they were pulling into the parking lot of the department store, as the cubs were looking forward to trying on some new clothes to get for school.
After parking their Plymouth Fury station wagon, Marge reminded the cubs, "Watch out for cars. And no running".
Thus, the cubs made their way to the store in an orderly fashion, with Marge following along behind them.
As they entered the store, Rex wanted to get a soda at the store's luncheon counter... Some department stores and drug stores had a little restaurant and soda fountain section back in those days... Much like what Target stores have in the 21st Century.
Marge told Rex, "You don't need to be carrying a soda into the clothing department. Besides, you already had a soda a while ago at the Club Cafe' ".
With that said, Marge and the cubs went over to pick out some school clothes.
There were so many nice styles of clothes, including pants, jeans and shirts in the male's wear area. And there was also a large variety of slacks, dresses, skirts and blouses in the female's wear area as well. One would almost have a time deciding where to begin.
Rex took a liking to a cowboy style pair of blue jeans.
"Oh, those would look nice on you", Marge said to Rex.
"My brother, Lone Ranger Rex", Donna jested as Rex smiled.
"These look about the right size", Rex said as he went over to where the fitting rooms are.
When Rex opened the door to a fitting room, he heard a female bobcat exclaim, "Eeek, Do you mind, little boy?"
"Sorry", Rex replied as he closed the door.
The female bobcat was trying on a pair of slacks, and the other fitting rooms were also occupied.
After Marge also apologized on behalf of her son, she said to him, "Rex, you need to knock first before you open a fitting room door".
"I guess I forgot", Rex replied.
As soon as the bobcat was done with the fitting room, Rex went in to try on the cowboy style jeans.
"They feel a little tight", Rex said as he came back out.
"They're too small for you", Marge said to Rex, then she picked out a larger size for Rex to try.
While Rex was trying on the larger size jeans, Jed picked out a dark blue pair of casual pants he liked, which also had those little cuffs on the ends of the legs. Those were still popular in 1960.
Once a fitting room was available, Jed tried them on.
When Rex came back out wearing the size cowboy jeans Marge had picked out for him, he proclaimed, "These feel more comfortable".
"They fit great", Marge affirmed.
"As Jed stepped out of the fitting room, everyone saw that the dark blue casual pants fit great.
Before Clarence had made the journey from 2018 to 1960, he had already been aware of the bell bottom style jeans of the 1960s and early 1970s. But what Clarence didn't know was, it would still be three years or so yet, in the mid 1960s, before bell bottom jeans came into style.
"Aren't there any bell bottoms here? I don't see any around", said Clarence.
"Bell bottoms?", Jed asked rather puzzled.
"Those are what navy sailors wear", Rex exclaimed.
"Bell bottoms go with navy uniforms, Clarence", Marge added. "You don't buy military uniforms at a store".
"Oh", Clarence replied, now realizing bell bottoms were not yet in style.
"Maybe Clarence thinks he's going to military school", Donna jested.
"Okay, Donna. Very funny", Marge said to Donna.
Though there were no bell bottom jeans to choose from, Clarence did find some pants he liked well. One pair of casual pants he picked out was red, black and beige plaid with a hint of yellow accent, and they had fairly large cuffs. In the year 2018, no one would want to be caught dead wearing those pants. However, in 1960, they were considered the latest style and really cool... And those plaid pants went really sharp with a solid black polo shirt Clarence picked out. Marge even mentioned how good a pair of black and white saddle shoes and a white belt would go with that outfit.
"That will be the envy of the other cubs at school", Jed said of that outfit.
"I bet it would be a hit at The Hop", Rex mentioned, being that they have seen young patrons there wearing similar outfits.

Jed and Rex, as well as Clarence in case he doesn't get back to 2018 soon, eventually picked out quite a collection of jeans, casual pants, polo shirts, sport shirts and casual pull overs for the coming school year... Rex also chose a couple of cowboy style shirts.
Then it was Donna's turn to pick out school clothes. There were several plaid dresses she picked out, as well as a light blue skirt and blouse, and a pink dress with fine white stripes.
Donna also picked out quite a few slacks and blouses to go with them.
Then they went over to the shoe department.
Among the pairs of shoes Rex picked out, he also picked out a pair of cowboy boots that were black and white and adorned with rhinestones. Rex had noticed TV western movie stars wearing boots like those.
Among the shoes Jed chose was a pair of penny loafers. Some of the cool cubs in the same grade with Jed also wear them.
Among the shoes Clarence picked out were a pair of black and white saddle shoes to go with those plaid pants and black polo shirt. Clarence also picked out a white belt.
Among the shoes Donna chose were a pair of ruby red slippers like the character Dorothy Fox had on the movie The Wizard of Oz. In that movie, Donna Coyote's favorite characters are Dorothy Fox and her non-anthro little dog, Toto.
Which by the way, that reminded Clarence of how in the movie, a pair of ruby slippers got Dorothy Fox home. But it was going to take getting a time travel machine repaired to get Clarence home.
As for jackets and coats, a raccoon who is a store associate said the store will be getting those in stock at the end of the month.
It was shortly before 3:00 that afternoon by the time they got their selections up to a check out aisle and paid for. And there were no plastic bags in those days. Purchased items were always bagged in paper bags back then.
"Can we get a soda now?", Rex asked before they headed out with their purchases to the car.
"Yea, can we?", Donna also asked.
"We going to stop at the stationary shop to get you all some school supplies first", Marge answered.
"Then we come back for sodas?", Rex asked, referring to the department store's luncheon counter.
"We can go to the Comet Drive-in", Marge suggested.
"Awright", Jed interjected as the other cubs cheered.
"That's better the snack counter", Rex agreed.
Thus, once Marge and the cubs got back into the Plymouth station wagon, they proceeded to the stationary shop.
At the stationary shop, Marge and the cubs made their selections in about 20 minutes. However, there was a delay ahead of them at the check out stand. A badger couple was using a Bank Ameracard to purchase a typewriter. Credit cards were a new thing at that time, and the young raccoon who was the clerk running the cash register was still not acustom to conducting a credit card transaction. He had the part down pat about working the embosser, often called a zip-zap, where you slide the upper part over the credit card and the carbon copy transaction slip. However, the manager, a bear, still had to instruct the clerk about the part of processing the transaction slip, and which copy the customer gets.
During the delay, Rex remarked in a low tone, "If those badgers ain't got the money, they oughta stay home".
As the other cubs starting giggling, Marge discretely said to Rex, "Don't be starting a scene in the store. And ain't is not a proper word".
"We'll never get our sodas at this rate", Donna whispered as the cubs again giggled.
"They're almost done", Marge assured the cubs in a low tone.
Once the the credit card transaction was done with the badger couple, Clarence said in a low tone, "Finally".
"Clarence", Marge reprimanded in a low tone.
The only other customer ahead of them was a wolf purchasing a pack of pigmented wax paper sheets for a spirit duplication copier (somewhat similar to, but different from a mimeograph machine). Fortunately, he paid in cash.
Afterwards, Marge finally made the purchase of the school supplies for the cubs.
It was about a quarter till 4:00 by the time they got out of the stationary shop, then it was to the Comet Drive-in for some sodas.
At the Comet, there was no indoor dining. It was a drive-in, which meant dining was in the car. They did bring your order out to your car though.
Being that Marge and the cubs were only ordering sodas, they waited at the order window rather than to have the sodas brought out to them. Once they got their sodas, Marge let the tailgate down on the Plymouth wagon for everyone to sit on. It was sort of like having a tailgate party as they drank their sodas. That was certainly among the many enjoyable parts of the day as Marge and the cubs socialized a while on that station wagon tailgate and took their time drinking their sodas...Which those were large size sodas by the way.
Jed did mention that he could hardly wait until their new go-kart arrives by train back home in Duran. Al had already ordered it the day before after he got off from work.
The rest of the cubs were looking forward to it to.
"You're dad said they told him it should arrive this coming Monday", Marge assured the cubs.
"Then we can go racing with Ryan", Rex exclaimed.
"Not on the street though", Marge replied. "Your dad said if Ryan Lynx and you want to do any racing, we'll set up a course on the edge of the desert to race on".
"Other that that, we just ride and cruise when we're on the street", Jed said.
"That's right", Marge affirmed.
After relaxing at the Comet Drive-in for a half hour, it was time to be getting back home.
It was getting past 4:15 when Marge closed the tailgate and everyone got back in the car.
"Before we go home, can we watch the passenger train stop at the station?", Jed asked.
"Yea, it gets here not long from now", Rex added.
"Can we, Mom?", Donna asked.
"Yes we can", Marge agreed as the cubs cheered. "But after this, we need to be getting on home".
"Is that the same train that goes through where we live?", Clarence asked as they proceeded to the train station.
"It is the same one", Jed answered.
"It's also the same train that goes the other way by our place after two o'clock at night", Rex said to Clarence.
"It's on the northbound run right now", Jed added.
It was almost 4:30 when they arrived to the train station on the west side of town.
Jed mentioned upon looking at the clock on the dashboard of the car, "We should see the head light of the train down the tracks any time now. It's due here in 5 minutes".
Upon getting out of the car, Marge reminded the cubs, "Make sure to stay off the tracks. And stay behind the yellow line when the train is getting here".
At the station platform, everyone looked down the tracks anticipating the arrival of the Southern Pacific northbound passenger train. However, there was no sign of a headlight to be seen down the tracks. Even at the scheduled arrival time of 4:35, there was still no sign of the train.
"The train should be here by now", Rex said.
A coatamundi couple and their three cubs waiting to greet a relative from the train were also wondering why the train hasn't showed up.
"We're suppose to meet my wife's sister when the train gets here", the daddy coatimundi said to the coyotes as their cubs and the coyote cubs were having conversation.
"We're here because my cubs want to watch the train", Marge said to the coatimundis. "I just hope everything's okay".
"We are starting to get concerned", the male coatimundi's wife mentioned.
"Or Aunt Elisa is riding that train to here", one of the coatimundi cubs said to the coyotes.
At around 4:40, the station master, an otter, came out to the platform with some news that was a relief to everyone.
"The train is going to be getting here a little late", the otter said. "There was a mishap 20 minutes ago, so it will be a while yet".
"That was the same time we were leaving the Comet Drive-in", Jed mentioned.
"At least we can rest assured now, Elisa is alright", the male coatimundi said to his wife.
"That I am so happy to hear", his wife replied.
"What happened", Rex asked the otter.
"They didn't tell me much details. Just that the train is delayed south of Pastura because of a mishap", the otter replied.
"Well cubs. We might as well head on home", Marge said. "There's no telling how long the train will be delayed".
"What do you think happened, Mom?", Donna asked as they made their way back to the station wagon.
"I don't know any more about it than you do right now", Marge answered Donna. "But we should see it on the 11:00 news tonight".
After Marge and the cubs got back in the car, and as they proceeded home, Clarence said, "So much for watching the train".
"Well, those things happen I guess", Jed replied to Clarence.
Before long, Marge and the cubs were out of Santa Rosa and travelling southbound on Highway 54 on their way back to Duran. It was about 18 miles before they had to slow down to go through Pastura. Pastura is by no means a big place, thus it didn't take long before Marge and the cubs were leaving town as they continued south on Highway 54 where the highway ran parallel with the Southern Pacific railroad tracks.
A few miles out of Pastura, Jed mentioned, "I think I see a helicopter hovering around way up ahead".
"Yea, I see it too", Marge affirmed.
"And some red lights flashing", Clarence said as emergency vehicle lights can be seen two miles down the highway.
As they got within a mile of what was going on, Rex said, "There's the train sitting still on the tracks".

"It don't look like it derailed or anything", Donna said as they arrived closer to the scene.
"The station master wouldn't have said the train is running late if it derailed", Marge informed Donna.
"Yea, duh", Rex added.
"Mnnnn", Donna replied sticking her tongue out at Rex.
There were four New Mexico state police cars and a KSWS News panel truck at the scene. Several animals were standing around the locomotive, including state troopers, a news crew, the locomotive operators and the train conductor.

A Bell, model 47, KSWS TV 8, news helicopter was also flying around overhead... It was the bubble cab type like on the M.A.S.H. TV series.

"Isn't that the Channel 8 news helicopter?", Clarence asked.
"It sure is", Marge said.
"It didn't look like they hit a car", Jed mentioned as they rode on past the scene.
"They couldn't have", said Marge. "There isn't a railroad crossing within a few miles of here".
"Maybe someone walking along the tracks", Rex surmised.
"Let's hope not", Marge replied as they continued riding home.
"Maybe a fight aboard the train", Donna guessed.
"Donna, don't be silly", Marge replied. "They won't stop a train over a fight".
"Could be the train broke down", Clarence said.
"Not with all those police cars around", Marge said to Clarence.
Eventually, Marge and the cubs past through the town of Vaughn, then along that stretch of Highway 54 before arriving to their home community of Duran.
"There's Dad getting back from work", Rex said as they saw the Chrysler 300 approaching on Route 3 as they were turning onto Cedar Street.
Marge and the cubs arrived at the house in time to catch the 6:00 News on TV. A brief moment thereafter, Al drove up into the driveway in the Chrysler and pulled in along side the Plymouth station wagon.
"We heard a radio report at work about an incident involving a train", Al said to Marge as they were getting out of the cars.
"We actually saw the train!", Rex proclaimed.
"And a news helicopter was flying around!", Donna added.
"We rode past it coming back from shopping for school clothes", Marge said to Al. "What ever it was, happened this side of Pastura".
"The 6:00 news should be on before long", Al said. "We're here in time to catch it".
With that said, everyone went into the house where Marge prepared some coffee, and Al turned on the TV while waiting for the 6:00 News to come on. The cubs also helped their selves to some Kool-Aid.
While waiting for the news program to air, Marge told Al about how she took the cubs to the train station in Santa Rosa to see the train make a stop there, but it didn't show up. Then she mentioned about them later seeing the scene where the train had stopped south of Pastura.
Finally, at 6:00, the KSWS Evening News came on. And after the introductory music finished playing, Ashton Lynx who does the evening and night news report announced:

At 4:17 this afternoon, a northbound Southern Pacific passenger train was delayed five miles south Pastura because of someone propping up a life size dummy on the tracks... Yes, you heard it right. A life size dummy".\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
"So that's what it was", said Donna.
As a recorded aerial view of the scene aired, Ashton Lynx reported:

We were told that because the dummy was partially comprised of wooden parts, Southern Pacific officials could not permit the train to continue further until inspectors could verify no damage was done to the locomotive that would impair safe operation of the train".\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
"Someone had to have lost their marbles", Al mentioned.
"I wonder if they even had marbles to begin with", Marge added.
"There are some out there who don't", Al said.
"Makes ya wonder who the real dummy was", Rex proclaimed as the rest of the family laughed and agreed.
Ashton Lynx then went on to say as a recorded interview with the train crew aired:

Casey Ocelot on recorded footage: "Theodore, what was your experience in all of this?" Theodore Raccoon: "Well. We were going along at 80 mph when my assistant Milo and I saw what we perceived to be someone standing on the tracks up ahead. I gave a long blast on the horn. Milo then said to me, 'Theodore, I don't think he's going to move out of the way'. That's when I fully applied the brakes for emergency stop as Milo continued sounding the horn. And then I said, 'oh my God, Milo. We done hit someone'... You know, you can't stop a train on a dime. It's steel wheels on steel rails". Casey Ocelot: "Thinking that must have been a gut wrenching feeling, I'm sure". Theodore Raccoon: "It always is to operators of a train that hits someone. But we were sure relieved to find out it was only a dummy". Assistant engineer Milo Aardwolf stepping forward: "Who ever done this, it was down right foolishness. These trains out here weighing hundreds of tons aren't anything to play around with. Seeing what's left to that dummy will tell you that". Casey Ocelot: "Oh absolutely. I see pieces of that dummy, and it's pretty well disintegrated". Ashton Lynx when the news room scene again aired: "It should also be mentioned that the train engineers, as well as several passengers aboard the train, said they witnessed a gold and white 1959 Cadillac parked along an adjacent highway, which suddenly sped away when this incident happened".\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
"We know who that would be", Al exclaimed.
"Who else?", Marge replied.
"Biff and his creepos", Donna added.

And the train checked out to be okay and is now continuing on it's way this evening. Also, Southern Pacific Railroad has announced they are offering a $300 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for what happened today".\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
"Wow! $300!", Rex exclaimed as he headed for the wall mounted phone in the dining room. "Can I call them?!"
"Letme tell some of it, and we can split that money", Jed suggested to Rex.
"Now wait up before you boys pick up that phone", Al told Jed and Rex as he snatched the receiver from Rex's paw and put it back up on the phone cradle. "You better be ready to have proof when you claim someone did something".
"But, Dad. We can be rich like you are...Three hundred dollars", Rex exclaimed.
"Three hundred dollars and you're rich?", Al chuckled to Rex. "You got to be kidding".
"Yea but...", Jed began to interject.
"Okay, I admit $300 is a lot of money. But it's far from being rich. Even the well to do income I provide for this family isn't exactly what you'd would call rich", Al told Jed and Rex, then asked them, "Now let me ask you this. If you boys phone in that tip, can you back it up? Do you have evidence? Any form of proof?".
"I guess not", Jed humbly admitted.
"That would be a good way to get sued for slander", Marge advised the cubs.
"You'd be far from being rich after that happens", Al further advised the cubs.
Marge then went on to say, "Not only that, Biff and the rest of those hoodlums who prowls around with him seem like the kind who would burn the house down while we're away".
"Your mother is right about that one too", Al said to the cubs, but then assured them, "Although those knuckle-heads better not try that while one of us are here. There's something in the night stand of our bedroom they wouldn't like very well if they did".
Needless to say, stand your ground laws to protect home and family were pretty standard back in those days.
Well...That $300 was a nice thought to Jed and Rex anyway, and it seemed like a King's fortune to cubs their age...After all, $300 in 1960 was like $3,000 in the 21st Century. A cub could be the envy of their friends with that much money.
Although the cubs wouldn't be coming into getting $300, the rest of the evening consisted of them playing with the other neighborhood cubs. Al and Marge watched the rest of the 6:00 news program, then everyone had a nice supper. Then the cubs ran their 0.27 gauge toy trains for a while, with Mom and Dad taking a couple of turns at it.
It was already late before going to bed that night, thus Al and Marge let the cubs stay up a while longer to watch Shock Theater on TV. The movie feature on Shock Theater that night was a 1958 release, The Screaming Skull.
The movie plot was as follows:

Jenni is Eric's second wife; his first wife Marion Weasel died when she accidentally slipped and hit her head on the edge of a decorative pond on the estate. At the home they meet Eric's friends, the Reverend Bill Snow Fox and his wife, as well as Mickey Beaver, the developmentally disabled gardener. Eric Weasel privately mentions to the Snow Foxes that Jenni spent time in an asylum following the sudden death of both her parents, and Mrs. Snow Fox reveals that Jenni Weasel is very wealthy. Jenni is disturbed both by Mickey Beaver's belief that Marion's ghost wanders the estate and by Marion's self-portrait inside the house, which Jenni believes resembles her mother. When she begins to hear unexplained screaming noises and see skulls around her house, she believes that Marion is haunting her. Though Eric speculates to Jenni that Mickey, who was a childhood friend of Marion and thus dislikes Jenni, may be behind the trickery, Jenni worries that she is going insane. Eric suggests to remove Marion's self-portrait from the home. Eric and Jenni take the painting outside and burn it, later uncovering a skull from the ashes. Jenni panics at the sight of the skull, but Eric denies that the skull is there. Jenni faints and Eric withdraws the skull and hides it, revealing that he has been gaslighting her all along. Believing she has finally lost her sanity, Jenni resolves to be committed. She tells Eric that the entire property will be meticulously searched for the skull as a last resort. Mickey secretly steals the skull and brings it to Reverend Snow Fox before Eric can retrieve it. That night, Eric prepares to murder Jenni and stage it as a suicide. Jenni sees Marion's ghost in Mickey's greenhouse and flees back to the house, where Eric begins throttling her. The ghost appears and chases Eric Weasel outside, corners and attacks him, drowning him in the decorative pond. After Jenni regains consciousness, the Snow Foxes arrive. Mrs. Snow Fox comforts a hysterical Jenni Weasel and the Reverend discovers Eric's body in the pond. Some undisclosed time later, Jenni and the Snow Foxes depart from the house. Reverend Snow Fox declares whether or not Marion Weasel's death was an accident will remain a mystery. The film ends with the gardener drinking from the pond and saying, "They've left. Rest in peace." a vision of a female weasel's face appears in the pond.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The cubs, as well as Al and Marge, enjoyed the night fright movie thriller. And after Shock Theater was over, KSWS signed off of the air for the night as TV stations usually do back in those days. As KSWS signed off, they played the National Anthem as was common with television stations when they signed off for the night.
As the family stood for KSWS's playing of the anthem on TV, Clarence also knew to stand by this time as well...That was something never taught to Clarence in the school he attended in the 21st Century.
However, at one point while KSWS was signing off, Al did have to call Clarence down about fidgeting during the playing of the anthem on TV..

The observance of protocol back in those days was certainly different from what it is in the day and time Clarence had come from, where professional athletes take a kneel to the anthem.

Once the station signed off, and the TV then played only static, it was turned off, then Al announced to the cubs, "Okay, you cubs. It's time for bed".

Everyone then began to enjoy a good night's sleep.
Although, at about 1:55 am, Donna awoke out of a nightmare and went running to Al and Marge's bedroom, crying, "Mom! Dad! The screamin' skull's after me! The screamin' skull's after me!"
That woke up the boys as they could be heard giggling from their bedroom.
Once in the parent's bedroom, Al and Marge assured Donna it was only a dream. Then they let Donna sleep cuddled up between them for the rest of the night. That way, sleeping cuddled up between Mom and Dad made Donna feel safe from the screaming skull.
Everyone then enjoyed a good night's sleep for the rest of the night.
