The accident was caused by a rather innocent mistake...A beaver couple were heading northbound in their 1958 Chevy Delray (Delray being the lowest price series Chevy back in those days) when the male focused his attention away from his driving long enough to allow the right wheels of the car to run off of the pavement. Instinctively, the male beaver immediately steered back onto the pavement without first slowing down...And at 70 mph, that caused the car to fishtail as it veered across the highway. When the male tried to correct the car, he over steered, thus causing the car to violently fishtail out of control before flipping over.
Car's in that day and time didn't normally come equipped with seat belts, thus the male's wife was ejected from the car as it rolled over (the roof wasn't yet all the way crushed down at that moment). Fortunately, she was ejected shortly before the car came to rest, which means the car was no longer tumbling at high speed...Had she been ejected when the car first flipped, it would have been at a much higher speed and a lot worse. As it is, the female is alive and conscious, and though she has some lacerations, a broken leg and a broken collar bone, her injuries are not life threatening...She's also lucky she landed where she didn't get rolled on beneath the car.
The male has lacerations and two broken ribs which are not life threatening. However, the male is trapped in the overturned car, and the smell of gasoline fumes is also present, making the male beaver really desperate to get out of that car...With the car being up side down, the float bowl of the carburetor is gradually draining gasoline from the tank to where the hot engine is.
The male beaver was convinced the car was going to explode with him still trapped inside. But fortunately, a New Mexico State Police officer (a wolf) is patrolling that stretch of Highway 285, and will soon notice the accident scene. That state trooper and another trooper (a bear) who he radios for assistance have pry bars in the trunks of their patrol cars to force a jammed car door open in these kind of situations, thus they can remove the male beaver from the car...hopefully before it catches on fire and the gas tank explodes.
It's a sure bet that everything will turn out okay for the beaver couple...As for their then two year old Chevy that is now totaled, a car can always be replaced.
The Chevy was a Delray series, which in 1958, was even a lower price series than what the Biscayne was.
The car was a modestly equipped version with very few frills and no A/C. It had a 235 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder motor with a Turboglide automatic transmission...It did have two tone paint being gold and white.

That song had been released only 4 months earlier in April of 1960...In fact, what drew the male beaver's attention away from his driving was adjusting the radio's tuning knob to get better reception and eliminate static...Had he let his wife do that, the wreck could have been avoided.
By the way, the radio stopped playing as a result of the crash because the car's battery was busted during the roll over
Marge Coyote and the cubs rode by this wreck scene after the state police had already arrived.
One their way further down the highway, they met the two ambulances and a fire truck that were dispatched to the scene.
