Mr. Lowell, sir” Kate tried to step in, “I know you aren’t so uh, pleased with, uh, how we all got together and all, but both of us love her and…”\n\n“Both of us?” The wolf asked, then gestured to Dan, “Aren’t you the other player in the banjo duet with him…?”\n\nKate reddened as she realized the reference, “I… g-get what you are saying sir and its… not … untrue….”\n\n“Clearly not” The wolf said gesturing at Kate’s own 9 month belly barely contained in her stretched out shirt.\n\n“Be that as it may” Kate said gritting her teeth now, “I’m not just the ‘other woman’ in this situation. I love your daughter too. She pursued a relationship with me AS WELL AS my brother. She’s made her position on sharing us very clear, and she….” Kate took a deep breath, “She proposed to me, sir.”\n\n“She… wait she really did? You’re … engaged” He glanced over to Dan who sheepishly nodded as well, “You know how that would have to work right?”\n\n“Ya I do…”\n\nThe way the law allows polygamous marriages is an archaic trick that allowed a ‘head of household’ to have multiple ‘life partners’ married to them. \nOriginating in a more misogynistic era this basically meant one husband would have multiple wives, the wording is technically non-gender specific. In this case it meant that in order for the three of us to enter into a marriage, In-ka would have to be listed as the ‘head of household’ and both Dan and Kate as the ‘life partners’\n\n“Huh…” Dr. Dillon Lowell said at last after a long pause, clearly reprocessing the situation. He was always scared that his little girl would end up being taken advantage of. She was so small, not to mention she had been born blind. When he had heard that she had gotten into a relationship with not one but two sergals, one of the largest and most stereotypically predatory of races, his paternal protection instincts kicked over hard. He had to respect her decisions, it was unfair to act like she couldn’t choose for herself, so he hadn’t tried to stop anything, but he was always concerned. This was a shift in things though. It may be a legal quirk and based on outdated societal norms, but still; these two super-apex predators were willingly entering into a traditionally subordinate roll with his little girl. Chapter 35 New Life

The hospital was nice.

Clean and modern, some flowers and such spread out about the place, and doctors and nurses of various species milling about on their duties.

There was a bit of tension though as a positively gigantic direwolf glared drills into Daniel.

“Uh... sir...” Daniel said, looking for a rare time almost small as he faced Dr. Lowell, “D-don’t you think I should be in there…”

“Her mother can handle her.”  He said in reply.  Leaning forward to get his face closer to Dan, “You’re just the ‘boyfriend’ you know.  You look like you just rolled out of bed, and where is your banjo?”

“B-banjo… sir?” Dan stammered

That rolled out of bed part was almost true.  The trip had thrown on whatever they could as they loaded In-ka into their car and rushed over here.  Honestly in the panic it was just lucky that Dan and Kate got here with clothes on at all, even if they were a bit haphazard. “Uh s-sir.. Mr. Lowell, sir” Kate tried to step in, “I know you aren’t so uh, pleased with, uh, how we all got together and all, but both of us love her and…”

“Both of us?” The wolf asked, then gestured to Dan, “Aren’t you the other player in the banjo duet with him…?”

Kate reddened as she realized the reference, “I… g-get what you are saying sir and its… not … untrue….”

“Clearly not” The wolf said gesturing at Kate’s own 9 month belly barely contained in her stretched out shirt.

“Be that as it may” Kate said gritting her teeth now, “I’m not just the ‘other woman’ in this situation.  I love your daughter too.  She pursued a relationship with me AS WELL AS my brother.  She’s made her position on sharing us very clear, and she….”  Kate took a deep breath, “She proposed to me, sir.”

“She… wait she really did?  You’re … engaged” He glanced over to Dan who sheepishly nodded as well, “You know how that would have to work right?”

“Ya I do…”

The way the law allows polygamous marriages is an archaic trick that allowed a ‘head of household’ to have multiple ‘life partners’ married to them.
Originating in a more misogynistic era this basically meant one husband would have multiple wives, the wording is technically non-gender specific.  In this case it meant that in order for the three of us to enter into a marriage, In-ka would have to be listed as the ‘head of household’ and both Dan and Kate as the ‘life partners’

“Huh…” Dr. Dillon Lowell said at last after a long pause, clearly reprocessing the situation.  He was always scared that his little girl would end up being taken advantage of.  She was so small, not to mention she had been born blind.  When he had heard that she had gotten into a relationship with not one but two sergals, one of the largest and most stereotypically predatory of races, his paternal protection instincts kicked over hard.  He had to respect her decisions, it was unfair to act like she couldn’t choose for herself, so he hadn’t tried to stop anything, but he was always concerned.  This was a shift in things though.  It may be a legal quirk and based on outdated societal norms, but still; these two super-apex predators were willingly entering into a traditionally subordinate roll with his little girl.  Maybe a part of him was a bit on the archaic side as well, but it did ease his mind.
