He even kicked it, hard, which only served you replace the angry yelling with pained yelping. His wasn’t the only rig having trouble either, the one Mary and Kate were riding was barely operational too so the trio stopped off.\n\n“How far from the city are we?” Mary asked looking around. I can’t see anything in the forest.\n\n“Two miles or so.” Kate responded, nodding in the city’s direction, “It may still be out of sight, but I can... well I can ‘feel’ it, if that makes sense.”\n\n“You can feel it?” Mary asked, “Your powers coming back?”\n\n“It does feel better to be close to it. I… well to tell you the truth I actually didn’t think I COULD even go as far from it as I have now. Being cut off.. its…”\n\n“Wait wait” Sam said holding up a hand, “What do you mean you couldn’t leave? We drove you out to the notch just fine, you didn’t seem the worse for it.”\n\n“Its… hard to explain but back when I was in the city it felt like... well sort of like the world ended at the borders. I couldn’t feel things outside the city like I could inside it”\n\n“Feel things?”\n\n“like the strain of aging girders, not unlike a stressed muscle, or the heart palpitations of old plumbing with defective pumps, or the excited adrenaline in the powerlines on Friday nights downtown…”\n\n“…Like a body… you can ‘feel’ the city like it’s a body?”\n\n“Kind of is, isn’t it?” Kate trotted over to Sam’s ATV, he glanced down seeing her footsteps in the soft underbrush and stepped aside for her, “This thing is too, just much smaller. Like gut bacteria rather than the whole stomach.”\n\nMary raised her hand as if asking a question in class, then after a nod from Kate started to speak, “S-shouldn’t a being of light like, like you be in tune with all life, not just... I mean not with a city at all?”\n\n“I hadn’t thought about it much until I started talking with mortals” Kate said placing her hand on the side of Sam’s ride, “but living things have their own souls, and their own wills, maybe something without those needed more help than people did, so I watch the city. Or did, we’ll have to see how it is when we get back. Now then, this thing doesn’t have a soul either so, hang on.”\n\nKate concentrated and projected some of her energy to the vehicle. She felt its clogged arteries and damaged heart valves, or rather its rotting fuel lines and pocked chamber valves. With a push of energy into the poor machine the lines cleared up and valves started to slide smoother. It was a short term only, but it should get going.\n\n“I think I got it going again, but it is busted up still. Engine might perforate itself before too long.”\n\n“What did you do?”\n\n“Well, I sort of, possessed it, I suppose. Cleared up a clog and got some fluids moving again.” Kate stretched and went back to her own ride with Mary, “That sort of thing USED to be most of what I did, with the city’s infrastructure and such, before the… current situation that is.”\n\nMary gave Kate an odd look but didn’t say anything right away. They climbed back on their rides, and with Sam’s now running again they set off the last few slogging miles, getting closer and closer to the city.\n\nAfter a while Mary spoke, “So you can feel the city like a body?”\n\n“Ya…”\n\n“And you can ‘possess’ machines?”\n\n“Since they don’t have their own souls yes, to a point. I can ask locks to open and such too.”\n\n“And you do this with the city itself? … Kate?”\n\n“Yes…? Mary, if I may. Where is this going?”\n\n“Kate are you the city’s ‘soul’?”\n\nKate didn’t answer that one. She hadn’t thought about it before, but now she also wasn’t sure if it was true or not. The ‘city’s soul’? It was an unusual idea, but then again she had gotten very used to thinking of the city and its various parts in the same tone as body parts. She also could ‘possess’ inanimate objects, as could the demons, but she felt like she was a much more natural part of the city than they were. Would it be possible for a city to have a soul that was a real person? It might explain her memories getting fuzzy the longer back in time she looked, back to the earliest founding of Valborg city before it was a real permanent thing. As it grew did, she herself become real-er? Even in small ways she had been changing over time. She never ever felt the need to talk to people or have friends before, but now she doubted she could go back to isolation like before. She was definitely changing, and maybe had been ever since the city started growing.\n\nThen she left.\n\nIf Mary’s little ‘soul’ theory was right what would that do to the city? Would it be rotting? Well, it might be because of the demons, but that was separate. Would just getting back change things? And did it also mean that she shouldn’t ever leave? What if Atasi did?\n\nKate tried to push that thought aside, it didn’t help them now if it were true, just one more potential interpretation of what she was. What was important is that she could see the tops of buildings through the trees now, and really feel the city as well, and it was NOT a good feeling. Burning cars / buildings, cracks in concrete and glass, and writhing motions in the sewers made for the most nauseating sensation Kate had had for a while. So many things were going wrong that she had no idea where to start. In fact, she might have even asked that they stop for a breather, when Sam started to slow down anyway.\n\n“What is it?” Mary asked.\n\n“There’s a guy in the forest”\n\n“Like a hiker?”\n\n“Maybe, he’s limping though”\n\nThe three got off and took a step closer to the limping man. There was something weird about him, and the trio said nothing at first. The man however, having either heard their engines, or just sensed them some other way, slowly started to turn around to face them.\n\n“SHIT” Kate said as the creature that at one point had been a man charged them. Its limp seemingly disappeared and the speed it had gained was incredible, bordering on impossible.\n\nIt would have been on them in a moment or two, too soon for the others to react, too fast for Kate to even properly draw her sword. Instead, she half body slammed Mary to the ground then gave the mental orders to her ‘sword’. The clothing Kate wore, the fore her sword took when not needed exploded off of her. A scattering of flying liquid gold going airborne and with a push of power, accelerated towards their would-be assailant. Knives formed from the airborne liquid and turned the creature’s torso into a pin cushion. Its momentum carrying it forward and onto the ground.\n\nKate wasted no time ripping her sword from its body and bringing it down on the spot where she saw the ‘demon’ trying to extricate itself from its body, putting it down for good. Then she turned to the others, “We got to move. If they’re infesting the forest its not.” Kate was interrupted by a coughing fit before regaining her composure, “Its not safe out here.”\n\nMuch to Kate’s annoyance the muscle shakes had returned as she climbed on behind Mary and they set off as fast as they could towards the looking buildings. At least once back on real streets they could go much faster and be much harder to sneak up on.\n\nConsidering the rustling of leaves and the cracking of sticks that filled the air around them, they did not have that much of a lead.\n\nPosted using PostyBirb",
