The night sleep hadn’t helped too much. Her muscles still ached and even though she was rested she still felt completely exhausted at least in a mental way. She had watched people die, people that she knew, and some of those that did it were still out there somewhere, and if that wasn’t enough, she figured that before long she would start having an existential crisis over the realization that things like hell existed, presumably heaven too. Though the place she saw didn’t match any ‘traditional’ notions of hell.\nAtasi shook her head and tried to focus on the water. She was running it hotter than normal. letting it flow over her sore muscles and sooth her physical aches. She hoped by focusing on that she could at least stay more or less calm for the time being. It actually did work to a point and she felt her self unwinding, the steamy air seemed to help her breathe for what felt like the first time in too long. She just closed her eyed and enjoyed the warmth.\n\n\nAll too soon she came back to reality. She turned the water off before wasting too much of the schools hot water, or turning herself too pruney under her fur. She wrapped a towel around herself and padded back across the hallway from the communal showers to her dorm. Closing the doors behind her she took a deep breath, the scent of her circuits and old pizza boxes reminded her that she was home. She allowed herself to smile and dropped the towel. Air drying always worked eventually even if slower than rubbing, and she could get some tidying up done as she slowly dried off. She had picked up a couple old boxes and was fixing to tidy her tiny kitchenette when she was interrupted by a voice.\n“Just so you know. I am still here” The watcher now known as Kate said calmly.\n\n\nCalm wasn’t quite the reaction from Atasi who squeaked then half dove to get the towel and quickly cover herself. Towel retrieved she held it draped down her front by one hand while the other pointed around above it before she spoke, “Warn me if you are still here invisible girl!”\n\n\n“Well I mean I haven’t left” Kate said, “Also since I thought maybe you were fine being undressed around me now, I don’t really dress much either.”\n\n\n“A fair point” Atasi conceded looking around, “Still wherever you are….”\n\n\n“The futon”\n\n\n“Right, uh… can you look away while I put something on”\n\n\n“Sure” The watcher said followed by some shuffling as she turned around for Atasi to dress.\n\n\nAtasi slid into a casual outfit, a wide neck sweater and capris before sliding into her place on the futon next to Kate.\n\n\n“Better?”\n\n\n“Ya better”\n\n\nA shuffling noise on the sheets could be heard as Kate turned back, “Don’t think I’ve seen that outfit before.”\n\n\n“Felt like a change. She may sound perfectly calm, but here eyes weren’t, “Alright, for now. If you want to do something ‘normal’ I get it. I’ll tag along in case anything happens though.”\n\n\nThe pair strolled down the quad. Atasi took in the scents of the approaching fall and tried to thing of normal college kid things. Classes, and projects, and shopping. Atasi gave a brief tour around campus for her invisible companion, keeping her voice low lest anyone see her talking to herself, and as they passed by the on campus café Atasi’s nose detected a scent she only smelled but for a few weeks a year.\n\n\n“Hey Kate? You want a pumpkin spice latte?” She asked.\n\n\nThe watcher couldn’t’ very well order her own, and Atasi would look odd getting two for only her so one large, or whatever strange translation equivalent later she was sitting in the most secluded corner booth she could find, hoping no one thought twice about two straws in one cup.\n\n\n“This is certainly interesting” Kate said under her breath after a sip. The pair had been trading off, Atasi making it look like she was fiddling with her phone and just putting the cup a bit farther away than she needed between sips, though her real reason was to allow her unseen companion to lean over the table and sip.\n\n\n“Glad you like” Atasi whispered back holding a hand up to the side of her mouth to avoid others seeing her talking. She had brought along the goggles that would allow her to see her companion, but for now they looked almost the size of a VR headset which… now that she thought about it, probably wasn’t TOO strange for a student to be fooling around with in the lounge.\n\n\nShe slipped them on and smiled at seeing Kate’s slight grin at the frothy, fall flavored, milk infused, sort-of-coffee she had before her. It was oddly reassuring in a way to see what was effectively an angel enjoying something so common and down to earth. Atasi found herself reassessing her view of the watcher in her mind. She wasn’t just some alien supernatural being, but also a normal person in many common ways. \n\n\nThey traded off and as Atasi took another sip her mind made the connection about how sharing a single coffee in a private corner booth with someone was, a little bit romantic. She had no idea how the watcher felt about that sort of thing. Her sister had gleaned enough through her manic questioning to discover that the watcher was aware about things like dating and, other activities, but didn’t partake herself. She found herself wondering if that meant she was aromantic and asexual, or if, just like changing the style of her sword, or her own lack of a name, it was something that just didn’t occur to her before.\n\n\nAtasi was brought back out of her daydream musing by a finger gently pressing up on her chin and the voice of the watcher, of Kate chiming in, “I don’t mind you looking, but maybe don’t let your mouth hang open?”\n\n\nAtasi blinked and realized that her eyeline had drifted southward in her musing. She jerked up and closed it, failing to suppress the urge to turn red. Her companion was just smiling that sweet smile at her, and Atasi thanked her stars that Kate was invisible. Anyone else in the café would have only seen her staring slightly slack jawed at an empty bench, instead of a perfectly formed pair of soft and white furred bosoms, cradled by intricate golden jewelry…. You do have a healthy and mature looking body. When you were naked earlier I did find you aesthetically appealing to look at. Similar I suppose to how a rose can look, or a rainbow after the rain when you just want to look at it and for no other purpose.”\n\n\nAtasi wasn’t winning any fight against her blushing face now. She was reasonably sure that Kate didn’t realize how god damn romantic she was being. Chapter 29: Breather
Atasi let out a long sigh against the shower wall, she had managed to get her manic sister to eat something and then head back to her own dorm so Atasi could finally take a breather and think.  The night sleep hadn’t helped too much.  Her muscles still ached and even though she was rested she still felt completely exhausted at least in a mental way.  She had watched people die, people that she knew, and some of those that did it were still out there somewhere, and if that wasn’t enough, she figured that before long she would start having an existential crisis over the realization that things like hell existed, presumably heaven too.  Though the place she saw didn’t match any ‘traditional’ notions of hell.

“Right, uh… can you look away while I put something on”


“Sure” The watcher said followed by some shuffling as she turned around for Atasi to dress.


Atasi slid into a casual outfit, a wide neck sweater and capris before sliding into her place on the futon next to Kate.


“Better?”


“Ya better”


A shuffling noise on the sheets could be heard as Kate turned back, “Don’t think I’ve seen that outfit before.”


“Felt like a change.  It is fall after all, or going to be soon.  And…”  Atasi took a deep breath, “Nothing’s going to be the same again, is it?”


“In a literal sense I hope I can fix everything, in a ‘how you see the world’ sense, probably not” Kate said.  Then after a long pause where Atasi didn’t reply she continued, “You know I wasn’t kidding when I said you should get some protection.
