She’s\nbeen a bit too quick for them however, her agility honed by years of picking pockets on the streets and\nrunning from the city guard, and was able to evade their grasp long enough to get away.\n\nAnd now here she was, running frantically through the labyrinthine slums with those very same\nenforcers in pursuit. What the hell was their problem? She’d done exactly as ordered, why would they\nturn on her like that? Was her employer on worse terms with this district’s syndicate than she’d led to\nbelieve? Had she been set up to fail? She pushed those thoughts aside and focused on running and\ndodging obstacles and the occasional pedestrian. Focusing on getting away was her top priority, she’d\nfigure out what was going on later when she was safe. She quickly jumped over some crates, rounded a\ncorner…only to slip on a nearby puddle of water she failed to spot, falling face down on the packed dirt\nground and knocking the wind out of her.\n\n“Ooof!” she grunted, inwardly seething at her negligence. A rare blue sergal like\nyou is a valuable commodity and would make a fine addition to our slave pits, so it was decided that\nyou’d be brought to us in exchange for a hefty sum as part of opening negotiations.” He laughed at her.\n“Funny, I didn’t think you’d be the one doing the delivering, though. Guess your boss decided to pull a\nfast one on your dumbass self, and you fell for it!”\n\n“I…what?” Kate’s heart sank, unable to believe what she was hearing. No, it couldn’t be, she was\nsupposed to be given the chance to prove herself! She trusted her employer, and he betrayed her? A\ncombination of anger and fear welled up inside her. She remembered an old saying about dealing with\nvipers made you liable to get bitten…Was this really happening?\n\nThe bull behind her leaned close and put his mouth right next to her ear. “Face it, blue.
