She is of a racial minority called 'Drod' which means she has dark grey scales, sharp teeth, claws, and a prehensile tail with a retractable venomous barb. Most Vern are not of this race but of the more \"tame\" race known as 'Prod'. Prods have pink scales, no claws, and no barbs in their tails. There is also a race of Vern called 'Semi-Drod' who may have features of both races. \n\nAll Vern hatch from eggs; Drods take 14 months, Prods only 8. When a Vern hatches it is called a Vret-Vern. Vret-Vern are creatures of instinct with no independent thought outside of simple survival. They are cared for by their parents for several years until they are big enough to enter their 'wandering years'. In the olden times Vret-Vern were released into the world to wander and survive on their own. In modern times however Vret-Vern are usually simply released into large enclosed parks with other Vret-Vern and then collected later by their parents. Modern Vern children live with their parents who take them around town with them for all sorts of activities. Her parents drop her off at a park so she can explore and play with the other Vern children. Chloe first meets a Vret-Vern named Tinge (pictured on right) but since Vret-Vern can't talk or understand anything Tinge is not very fun and Chloe looks for other children to play with. (Note: all Vret-Vern have their names written on identity bracelets, they also have barcoded tracking collars).\n\nA Prod boy named Frit recognizes Chloe from her Vret-Vern years and introduces himself. The two children play games and have fun. All is going well until they play a game in which they try to capture Tinge. During the game Chloe accidentally stabs Frit with her barbed tail and he is severly injured. Frit's mom immediately takes him away for medical treatment but not before verbally abusing Chloe and deriding her entire race. During this event Tinge wakes up and the first thing she consciously sees is Chloe crying over a bloody mess. Tinge is curious to know what happened but Chloe becomes deeply depressed and doesn't talk to her. Chloe had talked to people before who made her aware that she was not a typical Vern, but one that was potentially dangerous. Chloe now fears she is a danger to everyone.
