"description": "\"The Shadelands\" is the name of a strange dark dimension accessible from Earth. It's always extremely dark there, never getting brighter than an exceptionally bright Earth night. The only natural light comes from a permanent eclipse in the sky, and is not UV light.\n\nAccessing: Going to and from the Shadelands is difficult, but possible. On Earth, areas of absolute pitch darkness, with no light whatsoever, occasionally manifest gates to the Shadelands. These gates are one-way, and remain open indefinitely unless any amount of light hits them, at which point they instantly vanish. Anything that touches a gate, including when it initially forms, is instantly transported to the Shadelands.\n\nLeaving the Shadelands is somewhat easier. Gates to Earth occasionally appear in the Shadelands, with no restrictions as to where or when. They exclusively lead to areas brightly lit with UV light, and they glow with that light, though they are otherwise still one-way. There's also exceedingly rare doors in strange places that will lead to and from Earth, only a few of which are known to exist.\n\nNatives: The Shadelands are home to creatures made of darkness - the \"umbrakin\". Their appearances vary greatly, and they are nearly always monochrome. They are sapient, and tend to be aggressive to both each other and Earth natives, though exceptions exist. Umbrakin are \"born\" in a strange way: Rarely, a small area of the Shadelands, typically no more than a few feet wide, will become extremely dark - somehow darker than pitch black. If light is shone on this \"anti-light\", the dark patch dissipates. However, if allowed to remain, the darkness will eventually coalesce into an umbrakin. Even after forming, they retain an aversion to light due to the darkness of the Shadelands; their eyes cannot tolerate the typical light levels found on Earth, and a simple flashlight can temporarily blind them.\n\nUmbrakin are not the only life in the Shadelands, as plants exist as well. Just like on Earth, there's trees, bushes, grass, etc. Most plant life that is edible to umbrakin is toxic to Earth natives, but there's a rare few that aren't, which umbrakin universally describe as unpleasantly bitter despite them tasting fine to Earth natives. It's unclear what the plants feed off of.\n\nLife native to the Shadelands has an interesting weakness: UV light. Any amount at all will make an umbrakin extremely uncomfortable, and continued exposure can be lethal to them and Shadelands plants. Umbrakin are aware of this, referring to UV light as \"death light\". Most can endure UV light for roughly 5 minutes, halfway through which black smoke begins to emit from their body as pain begins to form throughout them. If UV exposure continues past their safe limit, their body will begin to melt, death following almost immediately afterward. The melting continues after death if UV exposure continues, and can entirely dissolve their body.\n\nWater: Surprisingly, one of the safest things in the Shadelands, differing from Earth water only by being purple. Fresh water and salt water both exist as normal. Long-term effects of drinking Shadelands water, if any, are unknown.",
