======================================= BEGIN EXCERPT ======================================= RESUSCITATION While resuscitation is one of the more complicated topics that will be examined in this textbook, it is possibly the most relevant, as it is necessary to answer one of the most glaring questions that you, the reader, most likely have at this point: "Why would I even bother taking a health and medicine class if people just respawn anyway?" This question is the reason that resuscitation is being examined so early on, to be later revisited in greater detail in its own chapter. The answer is a bit complicated. It is a mix of moral reasons - as many individuals, mostly those outside Neon City, are terrified of dying, and can experience permanent mental scarring by experiencing death when they are not prepared for it - and spiritual reasons - as some individuals believe that the only true existence one gets to be the first time they are biologically alive. Once they die and are resuscitated, they are considered something of a ghost, a fake-person. With that bit of context out of the way, it's time to address what exactly resuscitation is and how it works. Resuscitation is the phenomenon in which, once an individual becomes biologically dead, they form a new body and become alive once again, continuing their life as normal. It goes by many names, the most popular of which being respawning - a name borrowed from gamer culture. The standard scientific name for the event, however, is rescuscitation, hence it being referred to as such throughout this book. The speed of rescuscitation is dependant on one's own choice. When one dies, they have the ability to consciously choose how quickly they rescuscitate, with the fastest time being approximately five minutes, and the slowest being roughly four hours. It should be noted, however, that while a slow rescuscitation is restful and can leave one feeling refreshed, a quick rescuscitation is rather exhausting. If one is feeling particularly exhausted, they may not be able to rescuscitate in any less than two hours after dying. The location in which one's new body is created for rescuscitation is, similarly, a matter of personal choice. It takes some familiarity with the process to reliably choose a destination, however; it often takes one several deaths before they get the hang of it. In all cases, however, it must either be a place close to the point in which the individual died, or a place to which the individual has a strong personal connection - the most prevalent example being their bed at home. As of now, the only known case of death which does not result in rescuscitation is dying of old age. Once a creature reaches the age of 130 years, they begin to deteriorate in body and mind. Permanent injuries and disabilities start to happen as they lose stability, which are not repaired by rescuscitation, until finally the individual is too deteriorated to function. At this point, they will no longer rescuscitate, and they are considered to have passed away - their life is over, and they will never be seen again. Now that the mechanics of rescuscitation have been discussed, it's time to begin examining basic first aid procedures. While these alone may not save an individual who is at risk of unwanted death, they can keep said individual stable long enough to receive rescue from a medical professional. ======================================= EXCERPT ENDS =======================================
