It's time for Real Talk with Sam :3
Sam is generally a lot more liked than Swallow is with prey animals, because Sam is honestly really, really good with prey (a lot of Mostly Harmless was about showing that). But making a prey feel safe isn't just a one-dimensional thing. Prey feel safe interacting with Sam, but that doesn't mean they necessarily want to like.. climb on top of them (unless they're mice; mice absolutely want to climb all over Sam X3) There's a quality Sam has that prey animals seem to pick up on, and bunnies in particular.. it changes the relationship. Very, very slightly, in a hard to describe way. It makes it feel formal, makes Sam feel just a tiny bit more intimidating.
I've mentioned this in a few other places, but Swallow's worst AND best trait is that he's pure instinct. He has no filter, he just is genuinely dog brain all the time. That can make him kind of a nightmare for bunnies to deal with, but it also means that if you've spent time with Swallow and dealt with him being clingy and inappropriate - you've seen him at his worst. And you can see over the course over the last two comics Pebble getting progressively more and more comfortable around Swallow - because like.. what you see is what you get. You don't have to worry about Swallow losing control around a prey and hurting them, because Swallow is never in control in the first place! X3
And even though he's not in control of himself, he doesn't hurt prey.
And there's something very genuine about that, and I think that quality is part of what Pebble gravitated to in coming to Swallow. Pebble can handle Swallow. She doesn't have to wonder if there's anything beneath the surface. What you see is what you get. Swallow can be frustrating, but at the end of the day, he is just unreservedly, uncomplicatedly *good*. There is no guile, no act, nothing to pick up on. He's just.. actually a good dog.
