In which Swallow Fucks This Up. (don't worry, this comic won't have any watersports >w<)
Also in which Pebble vocalizes the unsaid part about how fucked up bunnies lives are. There's an unspoken element in a lot of my safe forest pieces that the pred/prey interactions in them are a contrast to the more fatal stuff in the Forest. That the animals are choosing to do something different, and what they're choosing is very radical within the Forest. The Forest in its natural state leaves scars, and the specific line from Pebble ("you get used to things because you have to, but you don't get used to them") is I think really representative to what being a bunny in the Forest would be like.
You figure out how to live your life because you don't have a choice, you have to be able to get up and do normal things. But you can't just flip a switch and make something that you know is messed up not feel messed up. You get used to it. You learn to deal with it. But you don't get.. *used* to it. Not really. It is *always* there.
So think from Pebble's perspective for a second - imagine you get to (even for just a few hours in an evening) release even just a part of that weight that you've carried almost your entire life, and you remember what it's like to fall asleep and *not* have part of your brain constantly scared, constantly waiting for something to happen. You don't have to worry about that, because there's this giant fucking carpet of a fox spooning you and you can feel pretty heckin confident from how tightly he's holding you that nothing's gonna take you outside of that den while he is cuddling. This is just no longer a Concern.
....it's really not surprising that Pebble's interested in making this thing work. They just got to wake up NOT because they were scared to keep sleeping longer, but because they were.. done.. sleeping. That is a revelatory experience, and while the comic doesn't show Pebble's early morning before she finally woke Swallow up, you can imagine that she did a *LOT* of thinking during that time.
Swallow is also doing a lot of thinking, but unfortunately he is incredibly fucking bad at it X3
